The Light Caressed the Curves
Written for @lire-casander for the @goodvibesinroswell Cosmic Love Exchange!
Summary: Painter!Alex and Cowboy!Michael out exploring New Mexico and each other.Â
Notes: Used Smut Prompt List #11 and a bit of hand waving on the terrain and landscape of the area.
Read on Ao3
Alex was on the porch of the cabin when Michael's truck rolled up the drive. He was waiting for Michael to pick him up as they were heading out on a painting expedition to paint the wilds of New Mexico - basically a hike and some camping. He was hoping this alone time, away from everyone and everything would give them some precious bonding time and continue their journey of reconnection. Plus, he needed someone to help carry all of his shit.
What he wasn't expecting was the horse trailer being pulled behind the truck.Â
Alex pointed at the trailer questioningly as Michael jumped out of the cab.
"What?" Michael just shrugged. "Thought we could cover more ground this way. And from the looks of all this stuff," he said, waving a hand at the gear on the porch, "I think I'll need help carrying all of this."
"Good idea, I guess." Alex sounded a little worried. He hadn't been on a horse in probably 20 years, let alone missing a foot.
"It'll be okay, Alex. I picked you out a good horse; she's calm, but responsive. You'll love her," Michael replied, as if reading his mind, trying to calm any fears.
"Can't wait." Alex plastered on a smile, in an attempt to be confident and sincere. "So where did you rustle up these ponies? Should I be worried?"Â
"A buddy I used to work with at the ranch still lives in the area. He owed me a favor, so I cashed it in to hook us up."Â Â Â Â
After packing everything in the truck, they headed south to the national parks near Carlsbad.Â
The windows were rolled down, and the wind whipped through the cab, catching Michael's curls and making them dance around his face. Alex was mesmerized by the sight, and with only an am radio station playing country music softly in the background, the 2 hour drive was over in the blink of an eye.
After parking the truck and trailer, Michael unloaded the horses and got them saddled. Alex's horse was named Lucy, a beautiful dark gray and silvery colored Appaloosa. He stood at her head, feeding her carrots and an apple while Michael packed up the third horse, Rusty, with most of their camp gear and Alex's painting supplies. Michael's horse was a dark bay with a huge white star on his face, appropriately called Polaris.Â
When Michael was done, he came over, his hands behind his back obviously hiding something.Â
"Whatcha got there, Cowboy?"
"Got you a present, something to make you feel like you belong up there in the saddle." Michael presented Alex with his very own cowboy hat. It was sort of buckskin brown in color, a few shades lighter than his eyes. He couldn't get over how beautiful it looked atop Alex's head.Â
Donning the hat, Alex asked, "So, how does it look?"
"Perfect." Apparently, Michael had a thing for men in cowboy hats too.
They hit the trail with no real destination in mind. Alex had packed a gps unit and a map in case they needed them, but he really wanted to explore and see where the landscape led them. And they were in no rush, so he had planned to stop and sketch whenever a scene or a moment caught his interest. He brought along watercolors and a sketchbook with thick paper to handle the wet medium. This was so he could do some quick studies, get a feel for the shapes of the landforms, the contrasts of the soft eroded hills against the sharp, jagged mountains rising behind them.
At one point, they stopped by a stream to give the horses a break. Michael found a shady spot and seemed to doze off for a bit. Alex couldn't help himself from sketching out his form, the curve of this neck peeking out of the collar of his shirt, the curls, the outline of his black cowboy hat, the soft folds of his faded blue jeans, and the scuffed up toes of his boots. He wondered if he'd ever seen Michael this relaxed before.
Later, after they'd made camp, ate some supper, and were sitting around the campfire, Alex asked, "Are you still glad you came along?"
"I could go anywhere with you, and I'd probably be happy."
"Did you just quote Bright Eyes at me?" Alex was surprised he even remembered the lyrics. That song felt like it was from ten lifetimes ago.
"Still true though. I would have followed you to the Air Force if my hand wasn't fucked." Michael could have gone on with all his declarations, but Alex leaned into his side, bringing a hand up to Michael's cheek.Â
"I'm glad you were here safe though. Gave me something to hope for, to keep me going during those long days and nights out on secret missions, not having to worry that you might not be here if I made it out alive."
Michael's lips met Alex's. It was soft and tender and perfect. Michael deepened the kiss, his hand finding the back of Alex's neck, pulling him in closer. Alex's lips parted and their tongues playfully touched and slid against the other.
They laid back on the blanket then, Alex half on top of Michael, comfortable enough to just enjoy making out under the stars. Alex worked one under Michael's shirt while the other had a firm hold of his curls. Michael soon worked a hand down the front of Alex's jeans. He didn't have much room, but he tried his best to make it feel good for Alex.
Alex pulled back from the kiss with a gasp. "Mmmm, Michael, fuck. That feels...fuckâŚ" It was simultaneously too much and not enough.Â
He rolled off to the side and worked off his jeans, along with his boots. Michael just sat there watching, so when Alex was done, he had to do that for him too. When they were both undressed only from the waist down (it was getting cooler out the lower the sun sunk behind the hills in the distance), Alex came back to straddle Michael's thighs. He took Michael's cock in his hand and started working him to full hardness. He ran a thumb over the slit, gathering a bit of pre-come to help his hand slide a bit better.
Michael hissed at the sensation, loving every second, but wanting more. He always wanted more of Alex.
âYouâre really going to make me beg for it?â
"Not at all." Alex leaned forward, his hot breath ghosting along Michael's neck. "I'm gonna fuck you so hard you might not be able to sit in a saddle all day tomorrow."Â
Michael let a moan. That's just what he wanted.
"You want me to save a horse, and all that?" Alex continued, his words teasing to match his hand stroking Michael's cock.
"Yes. That. Absolutely," he agreed. "Need you."
Alex was slow and gentle with Michael until he wasn't. He started off fucking into him with long tortuous thrusts as he wanted to draw it out, make Michael beg for more. That only lasted until he became consumed by the clenching heat around his cock and he couldn't hold back from pounding into Michael, the slap of skin and the muffled grunts of Michael the only sounds that made it to his ears.Â
The campfire was reduced to dying embers by the time they both came, Michael first with Alex riding out the waves of his orgasm before coming too. After he pulled out, he wiped Michael clean, his gentleness returning now that he was coming down from the highs of pleasure. Then he somehow managed to get them both into the tent before they passed out on the blanket with little protection against the cold.
When Michael crawled out of the tent in the morning, he found Alex in his element, in his new state of being. He'd set his easel up with a small, primed masonite canvas, and was painting away. The early morning light that peeked over the mountains cast the valley in such beautiful colors and accentuated the textures of the brush and the exposed rock about halfway up.Â
But Michael's favorite part, of course, was that Alex hadn't bothered to get dressed, even though the morning air was still a little chilly. The light caressed the curves of his arms, back, and ass - truly the most breathtaking part of the whole scene. What made it all even more stunning was his new cowboy hat atop his head.Â
He came up behind Alex and wrapped his arms around his waist, pressing in against Alex's back. "You looked cold, thought I should warm you up," Michael whispered, nipping at this ear.
"I'm still pretty hot from last night," he teased. "How're you feeling?"
"Cosmic," Michael replied with a proud smirk on his face.
Endnotes: Lire left me some really nice encouraging comments on my first 3 RNM (malex) fics during RNMweek19, so I thought I'd flesh out one of those stories a bit further as a present! Hope you like it! This isn't as finessed as I'd hoped, but I did try to keep it fluffy and angst free and good vibe-y so we could all have a break from the heartache! And then @eveningspirit posted an awesome illustration of painter!Alex for my Cosmic Love Exchange gift - truly helped me push through and finish this today!

Field Notes: Cuamba
âOpening this window in this part of the world⌠I had to get to one city in Congo and then figure out to hire a plane to then to get this little village that almost no foreigners ever go into, and then from there we had to hire a team of motorbikes and we went flying off through the rainforest. Huge trees bending over us, absolutely beautiful virgin rainforest, to get to these areas that had been affected by this rebel group.â Jeffrey Gettleman, Pod Save the World
From the mountainside, the view stretched out in front hundreds of kilometers. Off, hazy in the sunset, in the distant horizon towered a toothy saw-like range of peaks, slightly in front graceful green hills rolled towards us and then flattened themselves into an immense plain, a river bed of immeasurable breadth between our vantage point and the mountains yonder. Grasslands, farms, forests, riverbeds, tesselate and shift across the landscape. The sight appears unreal, itâs âbig skyâ country taken to the extreme, too much land to take in in one look.
A breeze lifts my head up from the ground, the trail is old, uneven, steep. It is also wide enough that hiking up it, we were prevented from any shade by the angle of the sun and the steepness of the slope. On the downhill side of the trail we were often walking at the level of the treetops, sprouting beneath a rock face or boulder field that dropped away amongst the bushes below.
Higher up, closer to where we had ascended, the trail flattened, the trees began to tower over us and as we turned onto a southern facing slope, away from the sun, the sheer greeness of the place overtook us. The Polish journalist, Ryszard KapuĹciĹski, once wrote that the first thing you notice in Africa is the sun. It blankets everything in its light, including oneself, in a blinding, bleaching effect. Here, higher above the dry plains and sun-burned river beds of the plains and dusty plateaus, it was not the light but the color of that overwhelmed. The sky, the trees, the dirt, the flowers, the bushes, the tall grass, the boulders, the scree, the cliffs jutting out through the trees and converging downwards around the river, which seen through the undergrowth might reflect a golden lance of light, a reminder of that aimlessly gliding above us.
Before I came here, I had an image of what life might be like in the tropics. I had ideas of dusty grasslands, savannah and sand dunes as well. These gave way in my imagination to tree clusters and oases, perhaps a verdant coast line. And, in a sense, in theory, my expectations were not wrong. The majority of Mozambique is made up of tropical savannah, with the rest mainly consisting of a âhumid subtropical climate.â But the images that I associated with the East and Southern Africa, albeit concocted from my imagination and therefore unsurprisingly, bare little semblance to the landscape stretching out before me. It is lush, it is verdant, it is dusty, it is rocky, mountains rise up out of flatlands as though someone had pushed these cone and oblong shaped rocks through the earths crust at sporadic intervals from the other side. William Finnegan, the author and writer for the New Yorker, described them as coming straight out a âchinese tapestryâ. And I understand why, the granite shoots out of the ground with little heed to foothills or foundation. No plain is free of a teeth-like spine or tooth-like spike on the horizon. This is northern Zambezi, southern Niassa and western Nampula, the north central part of the country, the highlands, the mountains, the agricultural zone, the (relatively) high altitude nut, corn, bean, fruit and vegetable farmland, âthe cellar of the countryâ as one motorista told me. Â
Our guide and I hiked above the rest of our group on the way up the trail, winding back and forth and eventually over the shoulder of a great peak. There are six mountains in this particular range, forming a ring, and a high valley between them, a thousand or so feet beneath the plains below. In the center of this natural fortress lays a reservoir, formerly a lake, that has been dammed to store water for the towns ad villages below. âWho build this road?â Our guide is an elderly man, heâs dressed in baggy pants, a navy blue but faded polo, a crumpled baseball cap, a satchel over his shoulder, he had caught up to me earlier to ask for a cigarette, he is now smoking his second of the climb. âNoruegasâ he responds. Norwegians. The road is little more than a clearing in the forest, a boulder strewn and broken path towards the sky. A small cement drainage shoot, at times cracked, at times gone completely, runs along the side - evidence of something. We swap stories in Portuguese. âEu nao sou Macuaâ he tells me, he is not Makua, a member of the community that makes up the largest indigenous language group in Mozambique. No, I ask, what are you? He doesnât know but he explains that he speaks Nianja or Chichewa, a language spoken by 12 million people across Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia but only by about 600,000 in Mozambique. I told him I speak a little of Elomwe, another local language, more common to a region south of us. He smiles and nods, yes, he says, they spoke that to in Malawi. Malawi, I ask? Why Malawi?
He pauses, yes, he says, he was in Malawi during the time of independence. He trained there, he says, not for FRELIMO and not for RENAMO he emphasizes. He adds, they came later, âaquele foi uma guerra entre irmaos.â He continues, they trained in Malawi, which gained its independence the same year that Mozambiqueâs War for Independence began. It would last a little over a decade, before amidst the transition and birth of a new nation a civil war would break out that would last some 16 years. After independence, he said, he came back to the mountains that he grew up in. He had been here, guarding and guiding people around the lake since then. I say, the mountains are always a place for people to go during trouble, my state is in the mountains. Yes, he agrees, many people fled to the mountains during the wars. We fall silent, pad along, wipe our sleeves.
Mozambique began its war for independence in 1964, when several liberation and anti-colonial groups unified in Tanzania to form FRELIMO or the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frente para liberacao de Mozambique). There were a number of groups that also fought against the colonial Portuguese, some based in other parts of the country (FRELIMOâs leadership largely consisted of Maconde, a community in the North of the country).
The war lasted from 1964 until 1975. Upon victory, FRELIMO established themselves as a socialist and, by many accounts, authoritarian government. Following this and the flight of 370,000 Portuguese colonists who made up much of the countryâs knowledge base, Mozambique descended into Civil War. The struggle for independence claimed 63,500 lives by one estimate. The Civil War, between the party-state FRELIMO and the Mozambique Resistance Movement (RENAMO) would claim over a million lives and displace another five million (in a country that today only has a population of 27 million, some thirty years later). RENAMO, although there is some ambiguity in the historical record, was most likely founded by the Rhodesian intelligence service, the Central Intelligence Organization (CIO), and placed under the command of a former FRELIMO prisoner and dissident. The war would drag on until 1992, and arguably continues until this day. Systematic war crimes were committed by RENAMO including summary executions, rape and mutilations of civilians. At times, their widespread terrorism prevented food, basic services, and public health from functioning. Even more so in the hinterland where it had hardly reached under negligible colonial development. Meanwhile FRELIMO could hardly claim to be innocent, as they forcibly relocated the population at gunpoint into communal village and even re-education camps. When William Finnegan travelled the country towards the end of the civil war wrote that for many of the people living there, âMozambique seemed to be a fairly hazy idea.â
ďżź We travel through a grove of high trees that I donât know the name of, we turn on the shoulder of the mountain, we come to a flat long approach along the side of a valley, I can no longer see the plains below as we have twisted around to the interior of the range. âWeâre closeâ the old man says. An opening appears, the road grows wider and grass, green grass, spread along it. Ahead, a valley widens to the length of a long earthen levy. It is the height of a few stories and won the far end of it, across a forested gulch, a spillway leads down to the stream which has kept us company thus far. We reach the edge of it and a lake, pristine, calm, blue, reflecting the sky above, stands before us. The mountains rise above, encircle us, dominating the skyline and giving the whole scene a sense of intimacy. A sense of oneness, we are guests to an unused living room. A museum of nature, untouched. The breeze rustles the trees, calms, and travels out behind us, making the journey from this hidden vale to the plains beyond.
Itâs mid-afternoon, the sun burning off the dust and the dim of the forest, and the peaks around us, faces of granite walls, leer over us. The place is grand, I know no other place to put it, it harkens back, like some refuges high in the Rockies and Smokies, to a different era. It is too rugged to be developed, evident by the broken and twisted road we take. I begin to wonder, how many people have walked this road. Relative to the well-traversed trails of my home, Colorado, the number canât possibly compare. And yet, here high among the peaks is a community of people that come and go, grow and sell, travel the heights and depths to make a living and a life. This brings a whole new sense of the word commute.
ďżźI remember studying something called transhumanism in some Ancient History course when I was at university. It was the academization of the fact that people move; they travel. Â And being in the mountains brings that to mind very poignantly. In times of struggle, people flee. Refugees take flight to protect themselves. Similarly, but altogether more routinely, people move day to day to constitute a means of living. That Ancient History course noted the regular meanderings of shepherd in the ancient world, overseeing their flock from pasture to pasture. And more contemporarily, there is the daily walk, bus, train or car ride to and fro wherever we may have to go. It is, it would appear, an endless necessity to human life. Therefore, it strikes me as altogether healthy and human, that we should elaborate on this to bring ourselves happiness.
Because, hiking high into this mountain valley, and even the act of trekking across the plains and grasslands to get to the hike, that is precisely how I felt. Travel it seems, or the journey, the motion, is so very human. It is a form of sustenance, yes, but also success.

TribeLA Magazine Acrostic Interview with Dr. Synthia SAINT JAMES
[hoot_dropcap]Tagline: Give yourself and your work a tagline.[/hoot_dropcap] âThe Creative World of Synthia SAINT JAMESâ â Iâve used this description for many years because of the variety of my creative work and endeavors, such as in the visual arts I am a painter, architectural designer (ceramic tile designs for the Ontario International Baggage Claim, Ontario, CA, and Cowan Elementary School, Westchester, CA, stained glass window designs for the West Tampa Library, Tampa, FL, elevator door designs for a government building in the East End Complex adjacent to the State Capitol Building in Sacramento, CA, and mural designs for two affordable living complexes â all of which was fabricated by other artists who specialized in each medium.), and illustrator of childrenâs picture books. Iâm an author (writer) of childrenâs books, poetry and prose, lyrics for songs (songwriter), affirmation books, a cookbook, and an autobiographical art marketing book. I have a background in the performing arts, primarily in the mid-late 1970âs, that included a couple of films and television (a national McDonaldâs commercial as the spokesperson). Iâm an art educator and artist-in-residence, who works nationally with colleges and universities lecturing, teaching master classes and facilitating various workshops.
[hoot_dropcap]Rest: How do you spend your time off?[/hoot_dropcap] 1. International travel, which has included countries in Europe and South America, but with a major focus on the tropical islands of the Caribbean, Tahiti and Fiji. 2. Reading all kinds of books. 3. Dancing at home to rhythmic music, my form of relaxing right after a wonderFULL day of painting. 4. Watching classic films, Bette Davis features and Agatha Christieâs Hercule Poirot murder mysteries.
[hoot_dropcap]Influence: What effect do you hope to have on us?[/hoot_dropcap] My hope is to uplift, educate and to bring joy and serenity to my audience through my paintings.
[hoot_dropcap]Back: If you could choose a past literary/art/music movement to be a part of, which would you choose?[/hoot_dropcap] Definitely the French Impressionists. My favorite all-time film is the first Moulin Rouge, starring Jose Ferrer and released in 1952. It inspired my artistic goals on many levels, including making a living as an artist during my lifetime.
[hoot_dropcap]Energy: What fires you up?[/hoot_dropcap] Dawn to early morning brisk nature walks, in a park or on the beach, where I release any built up tensions while repeating my prayers and affirmations aloud softly.
[hoot_dropcap]Los Angeles: Where is your favorite place in Los Angeles?[/hoot_dropcap] Thatâs a hard question because I have many. So Iâll choose the Pacific Coast Highway and the beaches between Marina del Rey and Zuma. Where would you take visitors? On a scenic drive beginning in Hollywood, then to Gladstoneâs Seafood Restaurant via Sunset Blvd. If you could defend the city in one sentence to someone who doubts it, what would you say? The City of Angels, the entertainment capital of the world, filled with beautiful palm trees and magnificent beaches, valleys, deserts and mountains, creatively energetic but laid back.
[hoot_dropcap]Advice: What is the best advice youâve received? What is the best advice you can give?[/hoot_dropcap] âMake a place for your art.â In 1980, I attended an informal lecture by Ernie Barnes where he emphasized the importance of being proactive. That was the best advice Iâd ever heard and I continue to encourage my students and other artists to take control of their careers. I also teach a workshop on âThe Business of Artâ and recommend my book, Living My Dream: An Artistic Approach to Marketing, for some helpful tips and creative affirmations.
[hoot_dropcap]Aura: How would you describe your energy, style, etc.?[/hoot_dropcap] Iâve been told that I have a golden and magnetic aura, and love that description which I hope to always live up to. I think of myself as a 68 year old petite woman with the heart and energy of a child. Iâm always open and love to embrace new ideas, and creative challenges. My idea of dressing up, or as I call it my typical âexhibit wearâ, is made up of one of my many Asian tops or jackets, some slacks and a pair of my âdressyâ gold or silver metallic sneakers.
[hoot_dropcap]Room: Where in your home do you work? If not in your home, where do you feel most compelled to create?[/hoot_dropcap] I live in an old Spanish duplex and I converted the back bedroom to my studio when I moved in over twenty years ago. One of the great things about the room is that it looks out onto a sun porch and a back yard filled with trees, plants, birds and butterflies, which makes my studio feel like a large creative oasis.
[hoot_dropcap]Tools: What do you prefer to work with, physically and otherwise?[/hoot_dropcap] My paint brushes range in size from a 0/20 to a 2 brush, and my mediums are acrylic and oil paints. If itâs a small painting Iâll create it on my drawing table, but generally I use my easel.
[hoot_dropcap]Indulgence: What is your favorite indulgence?[/hoot_dropcap] A nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc after painting or writing to celebrate the day. Do you cook? Yes, but not as much as I use to. My first cookbook that was published in 1998, which I revised and self-published in 2016. Itâs titled Creative Fixings From The Kitchen: Multi-Cultural Delights and can be purchased on Amazon.com. What is your specialty meal? A big pot of âShrimp, Chicken & Vegetable Curryâ with a side of Streamed Rice and Chutney. What is your favorite restaurant in LA where you indulge yourself? ALL-TIME Favorite: The Palace Restaurant for 25 years. The BEST Chinese Restaurant in Los Angeles!!! It was located in Los Feliz on Hillhurst Avenue but is now located on Central Avenue in Glendale.
[hoot_dropcap]Special: Who or what holds a special place in your heart? How does this factor into your creative process?[/hoot_dropcap] First and foremost my mother Hattie, who is now 90 years old. My champion and wind beneath my wings!!! How does this factor into your creative process? I was EXTREMELY fortunate to have had someone who always had my back, and who always encouraged me, since early childhood, to pursue my dream/s. She taught me to âKeep On Pushingâ to GO FOR ITâŚand I still do so on many creative and personal levels.
[hoot_dropcap]Time: What is your all-time favorite piece of writing/art/music youâve created?[/hoot_dropcap] A hard callâŚtheyâre ALL âMy Babiesâ. 1. Book: Living My Dream: An Artistic Approach to Marketingâ â which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award 2012 â Outstanding Literary Work â Instructional. 2. Song: âHappy Happy Kwanzaaâ â Co-wrote â Received a NAPPA Gold Award â National Parenting Publication Award. 3. Painting: âSlumberâ
