Councils awarded £866m civils cash for housing projects – Full list
Up to 200,000 homes are set to get off the ground after the government allocated £866m to councils to support local housing projects today.
More than 130 council-led projects will receive Government funding to support civil engineering projects to make housing developments viable and get much-needed homes built quicker.
With the government committed to building 300,000 homes a year by the mid-2020s,
The release of funding is the first wave of funding allocation from the £5bn Housing Infrastructure Fund established to fix the broken housing market.
This will fund key local infrastructure projects including new roads, cycle paths, flood defences and land remediation work, all essential ahead of building the homes.
Without this financial support these projects would struggle to go ahead or take years for work to begin, delaying the homes these communities need. Together with the government’s Industrial Strategy, it will provide high-quality infrastructure to support economic growth.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, said: “Today marks the first step of the multi-billion pound investment we announced at the Budget to help build the homes our country needs.
“This fund finances vital infrastructure such as roads, schools and bridges, which will kick-start housing development in some of Britain’s highest-demand areas.
“This support will help us meet our ambitious plan of building 300,000 new homes each year and ensure we have enough housing in areas which need it most.”

A dog stuck in a wine rack and a snake tangled in an electric fire are some of the 15,293 animal rescues fire services have attended in the last three years.
The cost of these reached at least 6m between 2014 and 2016, with an average cost of 400 per rescue, Freedom of Information requests show.
Firefighters say without their help, people can attempt dangerous rescues themselves.
But the Taxpayers’ Alliance said it was not an efficient use of public money.
Among the more unusual rescues the service was called to a puppy stuck in the mechanism of a recliner sofa chair, a cat trapped in a charity clothes bank and a horse that disappeared down a mineshaft.

In rural counties farm animal rescues were not uncommon.
In the last three years Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said it had attended to many large animals stuck in mud, ditches or rivers.
In Tyne and Wear a horse was rescued after becoming trapped in the metal framework of a quad bike trailer.
But for many fire services, cats still top the list of the species needing rescuing most frequently, often because they get stuck in trees.
All UK fire services responded to The Jeremy Vine Show’s request for information on animal rescues. Of these, 17 provided estimated costs.
They are estimated to have cost 2m a year across the UK between 2014 and 2016.

John O’Connell, chief executive of the campaign group the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “Something is clearly awry if they can spend so much of their time and taxpayers’ money rescuing these animals from such ‘peril’.
“Budgets are tight in all areas of the public sector and in future they need to make sure they are using their resources to maximum efficiency.”
A spokesperson from Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: “Our firefighters are paid a salary and putting a financial cost on an incident turn-out is misleading.
“No animal rescue would take those resources away from the rescue of a person, or to save a house from burning down.”
A statement from the Kent service said: “If we didn’t attend we know from past experience that members of the public could be injured or put themselves into dangerous situations (and subsequently need rescuing) while attempting to rescue the animal themselves.”

How do you deal with Hard Water? Solutions for Your Plumbing System
For homeowners, hard water can be a source of frustration. It can leave behind mineral deposits, reduce the efficiency of your appliances, and even affect your plumbing system. Hard water can pose challenges for your plumbing system, but there are effective solutions to combat it. If you're facing issues related to hard water, this article offers insights and solutions to help you tackle the problem and ensure your plumbing system remains in good condition.
What Is Hard Water?
Hard water contains an elevated concentration of minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. While it's not harmful to health, it can adversely affect your plumbing over time. Hard water often leaves visible signs, including white or chalky deposits on fixtures, faucets, and appliances. You may also notice reduced water flow, decreased appliance efficiency, and soap scum buildup in showers and sinks.
Solutions for Hard Water Issues
Installing a water softener is one of the most recommended solutions. These devices use ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium ions, replacing them with sodium ions, thus softening the water.
Electronic or magnetic water descalers alter the behavior of mineral particles in the water, preventing them from adhering to pipes and appliances.
To prevent mineral buildup, regular maintenance of your plumbing system is crucial. It is preferred to consult local plumbers in Newark for routine checks and cleaning.
A mixture of equal parts vinegar and water can help dissolve mineral deposits on faucets, showerheads, and appliances.
Gas Safety Checks
If your plumbing system includes a gas-powered water heater, it's essential to ensure its safety and efficiency. Gas engineers are trained to perform gas safety checks, ensuring that your gas appliances, including water heaters, are in good working condition.
Bottom line Thus, you can deal with your hard water issues. Remember the importance of gas safety checks by consulting a certified gas engineer to keep your gas-powered water heater in top shape, ensuring your peace of mind and safety.
