William Foster Hayes III (June 5, 1925 – January 12, 2024) Actor and recording artist. His song "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" hit the top of the Billboard charts in the spring of 1955.

Following a successful career as a musician which began in the late 1940s, Hayes began to focus on dramatic acting parts in the late 1960s, which led him to be cast in a role that gained him additional fame to a younger generation. This new chapter began in 1970 when he originated the character of Doug Williams on NBC's Days of Our Lives, which he continued to play until 2023.

Hayes was a singer on the Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca variety show Your Show of Shows in the early 1950s. During the Davy Crockett craze in 1955, three recorded versions of the Ballad of Davy Crockett were in the top 30. Hayes' version was the most popular: It was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, sold over two million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.

On Days of Our Lives, Hayes was introduced as a convict who was also a lounge singer.

The character of Doug returned in 1986 and 1987 as well as 1993 and 1996. Later, he was on the show from 1999 onwards. His character was killed off in the spring of 2004 by Dr. Marlena Evans. In an elaborate plot hatched by head writer James E. Reilly, Doug turned up alive on a tropical island and went home to his wife. (Wikipedia)

I see that I’ve picked up a couple of actual followers — which is honestly a development that I never expected. Sorry that you just happen to have jumped on when I decided to hit pause on these for a couple of weeks. (I will be resuming soon though, I promise!) In the meantime, let me regale you with the cute story of our very cute cat, whom we named after a not-especially-cute Days of Our Lives character. This is Susan Banks.

She looks like this (and this picture doesn’t really do justice to her crazy novelty teeth) and speaks in the most comedically broad southern accent you’ve ever heard. Despite being EJ DiMera’s mother (the E is for Elvis!) and having a couple of other fairly grounded connections to fairly serious characters, she really gives the overwhelming impression of being a sort of throwaway joke. Because, in addition to the accent and the teeth, she’s a psychic. Mind you, this is the show that became infamous for its devil possession storyline in the mid-90s. So much so that they revisited that storyline with many of the same characters in 2021-22. Which gave Susan, despite her strong “12:50 sketch on SNL” energy, something to do in the story. So she was around a lot when I first started watching. Side note: Susan has always been played by the same performer who plays Kristen DiMera. That used to be Eileen Davidson, and is currently Stacy Haiduk.

When Stacy assumed both roles, she reportedly sat herself down in the makeup chair next to the guy who plays EJ and said “I’ll be playing your sister and your mother.” Which absolutely delights me.

So. Yeah. When the Devil came back to Salem for another crack at Dr. Marlena Evans’ immortal soul, Susan Banks caught on pretty quickly, being, as she was, a psychic. So Satan, using his Satan powers, sidelined her by transforming her into a small cat. No, seriously.

The incident in question only lasted about one episode, but Susan managed to bring it up regularly for months afterwards. You know that ol’ devil, she’d say in that hilariously awful accent, he turnt me into a li’l kittycat! This became one of those things we’d repeat from time to time in our household. (Don’t pretend you don’t have things like that in yours.)

Last December, they killed off Susan Banks. Well. Maybe. We never actually saw her body and I’ve read enough comic books to know what that means. But she was in a car that plummeted off a cliff and I’m almost certain the stock footage they used to depict this was the same footage they frequently used in Toonces, The Cat That Could Drive a Car sketches.

Also last December, we adopted this tiny kitten.

(Not pictured: the fact that she’s missing one of her back legs. I completely forget this most of the time, but you might notice it in subsequent pictures and wonder what’s going on. So I’m telling you: it’s that. She has three legs.)

It did not take us long to determine that, even though she wasn’t the same kind of li’l kittycat, Susan Banks was the perfect name for this little fellow. It would also be an excellent tribute to the now-definitely-for-sure-dead character from Our Stories.

Sadly, we snapped that picture a few seconds too late, because she actually had per paw up on it briefly. Almost like she knew. (She doesn’t. She’s a cat.)

Is everybody watching the Amber Ruffin Show?? I loved her before but now… I learn so much from her show. Sometimes it takes a comic to get to the real serious shit. For example: Have you heard of drowning towns? Towns like Oscarville, Kowaliga, York hill, Seneca Village, Prentiss and countless other black towns that were drowned out to make lakes for the local whites. Central Park was also made after a black community was erased from history. Development displacement? Alleyway dwelling authority? Even those rabid for history can find out new things everyday. The Emmy’s were a little different this year with more of a Golden Globe look.  Cedric the Entertainer hosted with Reggie Watts as DJ. Lots of minority noms but barely a win. It was a white people night. Ted Lasso had a great night. Mare of Eastown took home a few with Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson and Kate Winslet. Now, Kate is great but how did Anya Taylor- Joy not walk away with that? Queens Gambit did win a couple and gave the longest speech with the seemingly arrogant director Scott Frank who opened up 2 page acceptance. Categories were tough but I was routing for Renee Elise Goldberry and Bowen Yang but perhaps next year. The people in England who had their own party for all the statues that the Crown won seemed to be having more fun! Hacks won for writing and directing and Jean Smart!! It was nice to see the Norm Macdonald love which was barely mentioned by Lorne but celebrated by John Oliver. Colbert ‘s election night special won as did JB Smoove. Hamilton won and Debbie Allen got the big one. I do not understand why real singers and or musicians have to be there for the in Memoriam. It takes me out of it a bit and concentrates the focus on them. Do they think that people will pay attention more? Do they want to keep the home audience or live audience from the bathroom?  My best dressed were Anya Taylor-Joy, Michaela Cole who won for I may destroy you, Jean Smart, Josh O’Connor, Kathryn Hahn, Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez, Keenan Thonpson, Leslie Odom Jr., Catherine O’Hara, Trevor Noah, Eugene Levy, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, Bowen Yang,  Anthony Anderson, Leslie Grossman, Amber Ruffin, Allyson Felix, Renee Elise Goldberry, Samira Wiley and Rege- Jean Page. My worst were Sarah Paulson, Gillian Anderson,  Beanie Feldstein, Elizabeth Olsen and Aidy Bryant. To me the best part of the show was the enthusiasm of Conan and the way he injected himself into much of the evening .He was the show.  Go Conan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do companies know how fucked up their employment websites are? It is true that some people do not want to work. It is true that people schedule interviews and don’t show up. It is also true that companies have made it so hard to apply that many can’t. I suppose it is easier for them but the poor who may really want to work have a hard time. Paper applications are almost completely gone. The old fashioned way of walking into low paying job sites and finding a connection with a manager rarely exist. Some places only accept texts or have long ridiculous psych tests that a working Mother may not have time for. A Father working many hours already, may not be able to go to the library to get online if they cannot afford a computer. Many websites tell you that there no positions available in your area while there is a huge sign in front of the establishment. Can’t find people to work.. Gee I wonder why?? And treat people with respect once you find them, how about that?

Johnny comes over to visit Wendy, but she’s not here — instead, here’s some shirtless Tripp. (Thank you, I will.)

We’re in month 23 of “Wendy inexplicably doesn’t know which of these guys she wants to date,” so I guess it’s time to run in circles a bit more!

The two of them nearly come to blows (no, not like that, Leo) as they talk through their conflict a bit. But then they decide to handle whatever ends up happening like mature adults! Which, in fairness, Tripp has been doing this entire time so it’s really just Johnny who decides this. Also, I’ve seen tomorrow’s episode already and — spoilers, I guess — it’s not going to last until then.

Wendy does finally return home and OH MY GOD she’s finally made a decision! Who will she choose: the handsome, charming, respectful doctor? Or the entitled rich kid with the horrible little mustache?

We don’t actually get to find out until tomorrow. I mean, I know already because… like I said, I’ve seen the next one. But I’m not going to tell you that yet.

Instead, I’m going to tell you why Wendy has finally decided to pick a guy.

It’s because she’s been visiting her brother, Li, in that little room at the police station. And really laying into him — first for lying to her about being over Gabi, then for the crime that he did. The crime of hypnotizing a dude to kill Stefan so he can be with Gabi again. (It turns out he didn’t actually do that crime, but HE WAS VERY CLOSELY INVOLVED WITH ALL OF IT, so it’s extremely frustrating to me that he might get away with that since he didn’t do the actual main crime.)

Anyway, Wendy’s disappointed. And Li… is his usual expressionless self throughout the entire conversation.

But then he tries to turn things around on Wendy, comparing his murder plot to her not being able to decide between Tripp and Johnny. Which is an extremely dumb thing to say, but… well, I just showed you Li’s face. He’s extremely dumb.

Somehow that did actually get through to Wendy, though? You know this part already. Except who she chose. I’ll tell you that tomorrow! Don’t be so grabby!

Speaking of Gabi, we’re still dealing with the aftermath of Megan getting the better of her. First, Rafe yells at her for needlessly putting herself in danger.

Then Stefan shows up to do the same. 

They take their fight home with them (while upstairs, Leo and Dimitri bone it out and Li’l Rachel is just outside with a glass to the door).

And eventually they work out that Gabi shouldn’t be doing things like “jumping on a would-be assassin’s back” and “confronting a bedridden supervillain.” Or rather, she SHOULD be, but only if Stefan’s there to have her back. Which is honestly kind of beautiful.

Said would-be assassin is himself handcuffed to a hospital bed, because of the whole attempted assassination thing. And here comes the main character of the show, Dr. Marlena Evans, still sporting that tablecloth outfit.

Harris has requested her presence so that she can unhypnotize him. Or… lay some extra hypnosis on top of the hypnosis he’s already received. Or something, I don’t know. I’ve watched Marlena enter the subconscious of like ten different Salem residents since I started watching. I think it’s like a rite of passage for these people.

While she’s rooting around in there, she discovers a memory of Li ordering Harris to kill Stefan.

That same horrible fog effect we got in John’s dream last week is applied again, so you know it’s a memory.

But then she keeps digging and discovers that it wasn’t Li at all! It was Dr. Rolf, whose white suit in this washed-out style looks like an angel. A mad scientist angel who commands you to kill someone and then makes you think someone else did it.

So like one of those “biblically accurate angels” we’ve all heard so much about.

And down at the Abe Carver Shantytown Memorial at the docks, district attorney Trask confronts Sad Eyes Shawn about his unfortunate pivot to Drunk Guy Shawn.

And then demands that Rafe fire his drunk ass.

Trask can be something of a hardass, but she’s 100% right here and I kind of hate that Rafe refuses to comply out of spite. I mean, why would a cop protect another cop who did something so fundamentally wrong that someone could have gotten seriously hurt? That doesn’t even make sense!

Then Rafe gets a call from Marlena, informing him that Li was, indeed, wrongfully accused of being involved with this whole Stefan Killing thing. So Trask lets him go.

Which, god damn it, is exactly what I said was going to happen.

God damn it!

The information in this post is all based on the previous years I’ve attended at Universal CityWalk, and 2022 at Peacock Place (formerly XBox Plaza). This years event is being held once again at Peacock Place in Downtown Los Angeles. This years event will be taking place a few weeks earlier than before on October 21, vs early-mid November.

What is it? Day of Days is a free, all day (10am-5pm) event held every year in the fall to celebrate DOOL and it’s fans! It also serves a press event for the current season of the show. This years event is being held at the Peacock Place at LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles. This is an outdoor space located near famous venues like the Microsoft Theater, and the former Staples Center!

Who’s coming? The event will be hosted by Dishin’ Days host and actor Tony Moore.

First, some general tips to remember:

Wear comfy/sensible shoes! You’ll most likely be on your feet/walking a lot. Your feet and back will thank you if you wear shoes with good support.

Bring sunscreen! Peacock Place is completely outdoors. Lots of sunshine and the SoCal sun is intense! Even in cloudy conditions it’s best to put on some SPF.

Bring a jacket. October weather can either be hot like summer, or cool like fall depending on what Mother Nature decides, so always keep an eye on the weather forecast. However this time of year the mornings and evenings can be cool, so a jacket might come in handy early and late in the day. 

Bring a good size bottle of water. If the weather is on the warmer side you’ll want to stay properly hydrated! I usually bring a bottle of water, a bottled iced coffee, and some protein (or candy) bars. That way if you’re after autographs and waiting in lines all day you’re well supplied! There is at least one Starbucks too if you need a caffeine fix too!

Bring a backpack/purse! This will come in handy to hold everything. However it might be wise to check out the Peacock Place website to see if there are any kind of bag restrictions. It’s probably safe to say bag checks are a possibility. If someone asks to check your bag, don’t argue. It’s a measure to ensure that everyone has a SAFE and enjoyable time!

BE NICE! Especially to other fans attending and to the staff working the event. The organizers, their staff, and security staff work really hard to ensure everyone has a fun and SAFE time at the event. Be sure to thank them! I know it can be frustrating waiting in long lines, but don’t yell at the staff! They work hard to make sure as many people can get through and again, to have a fun and safe experience! If you’re kind and respectful to them, they’ll be kind and respectful to you.

Don’t use iPads/Tablets/Selfie Sticks to take photos or video when the actors are on the main stage! This blocks the views of people behind you and is a big pet peeve.

Where is it? 2023′s Day of Days will be taking place at Peacock Plaza at LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles. Peacock Place at LA Live is an “entertainment district” in DTLA located in between the Microsoft Theater and the former Staples Center.

Unlike when the event was held at CityWalk, the event at Peacock Place is contained to the “square” shaped area.

Where do I park and how much is it? There is parking on-site at LA Live but last time I checked it was something like $10/hr with a daily max of $30. You’ll pay the daily max if you plan to be at the event the full day. There are other surface lots in the area that are probably less expensive, and will be a bit of a walk from Peacock Place Your best bet for info is to Google beforehand or visit the Peacock Place website for parking info.

The LA Metro Public Transit system is also another way to get to and from Peacock Place. There is a rail line stop a block away from Peacock Place. LA Metro has a convenient trip planner to help plan a trip to LA Live from where ever you are staying in Los Angeles.

Which cast members attend? It’s different each year, but usually about 80% of the current cast attends. Also during the Q&A at the end of the day a special surprise guest is brought out. in 2019 it was Stephen Nichols (Steve). In previous years it was Victoria Konefal (Ciara) before she first aired, Marci Miller (Abigail) and Vanessa Williams (Valerie). The special guests are only brought out at the end and aren’t included during the meet & greets. Last year in 2022, there was no surprise guest, but a special video message from Kristian Alfonso and Peter Reckell (Hope and Bo).

How early should I get there? The event starts at 10am when the cast that’s attending are introduced and walk the red carpet to the main stage.

How early you should get there depends on what you want to get out of the event. The past years’ event schedule has been as follows:

10am: Cast Introduction/Red Carpet 10:30-12:30: Meet & Greet 12:30-2:00: Lunch 2:00-4:00: Meet & Greet 4:15-5:00: Cast Q&A at main stage/Anniversary Cake/Sneak Preview/Special Guest

In 2022, there was a performance by The Day Players, the band featuring Carson Boatman, Eric Martsolf, Wally Kurth, and Brandon Barash, during the lunch hour! And same as last year, The Day Players will be playing a show the day after Day of Days at the Bourbon Room in Hollywood. (You can buy tickets to that show here.)

If you are ok with just casually observing the event and don’t care about waiting in line for autographs and photos, you can arrive right at 10.

If you don’t care about photos and autographs but want a good seat at the main stage or near the red carpet, you should get there 8-8:30am. That might seem really early for a 10am event, but fans are serious and will get there early to snag seats.

If you want to do the meet and greet sessions, you should get there between 8-9am so you can plan out who you want to see. Just a note, you won’t get to meet every cast member attending. It’s impossible!  But you can get to a great number of them if you plan a strategy when you see who will be at what station and when.

Meet and Greet Sessions Some actors might still want to wear a mask during the meet and greets. If an actor is choosing to wear a mask, don’t ask them to remove it. If an actor is choosing to social distance, please respect that.

There are 3 or 4 actors at each station during each meet and greet session, usually grouped by storyline. Lines for the morning session started forming early!! If there’s someone you reeeeeally want to see and they’re in the morning session, you should get in their line right away. If there’s nobody you’re dying to see, then pick whatever line you like! If you’re not picky, I suggest picking whatever the shortest line is first.

The station lines for the afternoon session usually form right after the morning session ends around 12:30. However first few years the event was held they wouldn’t allow lines to form before 1pm, but the last 2 years they allowed lines to form at 12:30.

Once you get through your first line during the meet and greet sessions, you can go chill out and relax for a while, or choose another line! There’s no guarantee you’ll get through a second line but you can try! If you politely ask a staff member they can most likely tell you which station has the shortest line.

In every station line, the staff will hand someone an “end of the line” sign. You can still line up behind the “end of the line” person but anyone behind that sign isn’t guaranteed to get through. Most of the time the sign gets moved further back into the line as time progresses. You can decide whether to try and wait, pick another line, or just go chill and relax!

Autographs are strictly limited to one item per actor per person. Please don’t bring 10 things for each person to sign! Everyone needs a fair shot at getting to see their favorites and the best way to ensure that is to have the one item per person limit. I usually make it easy and have them sign the cards they give you in the goodie bag. The event staff will help move things along when you arrive at the actor’s table. Always do as they ask and thank them!

Photos with the actors are usually not allowed. Having fans move behind the table to take photos is time consuming and holds up the lines. The actors are too nice to say no, so the staff has to be the bad guys and prevent this. Don’t be mean to them if they say no! In some cases the staff will allow you to take a “leaning in” photo, but I wouldn’t expect it. Consider it a bonus if they do! I usually just take photos of the actors and move along.

Cast Q&A/Event Finale: Once you’re finished with the afternoon meet & greet session, head to the main stage area. Around 4:15 the cast will walk the red carpet again onto the stage. The hosts will walk around with microphones and take questions from the fans. After the Q&A, a special sneak preview of upcoming episodes will be shown-similar to the “New Season” preview NBC released in September.
