Down By the River

Warnings: kidnapping, threats of violence, threats of death, gun, gunshot

Whumpee sat down on the riverbank, watching the water flow lazily by. It had been a while since they had come to the riverside and think. It was peaceful and quiet here. They needed to sit and think. So much had happened in such a short time. They just needed some time to process.

Their phone buzzed in their pocket. Whumpee pulled it out. Caretaker.

As much as they wanted to speak with Caretaker, to explain themself, they needed more time to think. More time to process and gather their thoughts. So they could explain everything.

"Put that down," a voice that had Whumpee's heart seizing in their chest. Whumpee heard the sound of a revolver being cocked. "I won't ask a second time."

Whumpee tossed their phone out of reach. "You don't have to do this," they began. They could talk Whumper out of this. They had to.

"You're right. I don't. But I want to." Whumper stepped in close to Whumpee, pressing the gun to the back of Whumpee's head.

"Where are you taking me?" Whumpee tried and failed to keep the fear out of their voice.

"Where no one will find you." And Whumper lifted the gun and fired it next to Whumpee's ear.

#post tag #the fens geese are chill i’m not scared of them anymore. i’ve never had problems #the riverside geese though…#a couple years ago i was down by the riverside & was intimidated by the geese but then fully ran away from a swan #actually i can’t believe we have swans in this city but i haven’t seen them in forever. i should go down one of these days #but it’s so far… i used to work in back bay & i’d skip down there on my lunch break #too far to want to walk but it doesn’t really make sense to not walk. you know what i mean

I have to be so honest and vulnerable with you for a second. I keep thinking of getting another complete works of Shakespeare

#tales from diana #my riverside 1973 is still my beloved baby but she's really worse for the wear these days #i didn't start thinking about it till i got one for my friend like 6 months ago for his bday #and i kept looking at it and being like oh wow. his doesn't have all the scratches and rips mine does #mine is still BETTER obviously bc it's MINE. it's in worse condition objectively but it's MINE #making it the best copy in existence. to me #and it was my aunt's textbook at boston college. my grandmother let me have it. i think of it as a family heirloom #and the coating on the front cover side of the spine has been slowly tearing off :(#like there's one long vulnerable rip almost all the way down. idk how to prevent it from breaking further #other than just by not using it. and idk how to fix it wo making it potentially worse #i didn't know how to take care of old gigantic books when i got it at 19. i never considered it #i hadn't had one before. but now im more experienced #and im also just curious about what's inside other editions. especially newer ones #i only have 6 plays and at least 3 of them i plan to read in a copy other than the riverside #like my 23 plays and sonnets (1953) edited by t. m. parrot has 2 and another play im gonna borrow from library lending #and id definitely wanna get rid of a lottttt of books i have right now before getting a new one #im already planning on which books to donate when i declutter #and i need to declutter my books DESPERATELY. so so desperately #it'd just be nice to have another complete works in my collection. for a number of reasons.#that way i also suppose ill have two big books of shakespeare for auntie diana to pass down someday #i don't plan on getting one soon im just in the contemplative phase. but boy am i tempted

"Six Simple Cinquains" - a poem written 5/30/2024, based off of an eighth grade teacher's poetry writing prompt

Five lines, 2-4-6-8-2 syllables, title-description-action-feeling-conclusion, respectively.

Caesar never wrote a paper on the Roman empire, so why do I still have to? Early September al- ready mentally—I'm transported by thought right out of late May. Eighth grade and junior year and just turned twenty-five— debris in a river, swirling, teaching. River- side Shakespeare, nine- teen-seventy-three fall- ing apart because I don't know how to take care of things I love yet as they get older, more fragile. My grandmother's book I read— only I have read in forty years. It sat straight as we lived our lives, it held its pages.
