I'll make you safe
day 22 | rated: m | wc: 1060 | prompts: BLEEDING THROUGH BANDAGES | Tourniquet | Reopening Wounds | "Oh that's not good." | cw: DV, aftermath of DV (see ao3 notes for details) | ao3 A domestic violence call to a hotel hits a bit too close to home for Buck. (Canon divergent, set around the start of s2)
The call to a hotel for a suspected domestic violence incident wasn't easy. They'd arrived at the hotel right after Athena and the other team of officers, following them into the front desk to hear what happened to spur the call.
"We've had a few reports from neighboring rooms about some shouting between the couple. We had staff go to check on them, but both claimed everything was okay. This morning there were a number of reports about loud arguing, screams, and sounds of someone or something being hit. We did see him leave, but she is still in the room." The manager explained. "He is a doctor, and we believe he is in the area for a medical conference."
"What are the names on file?" Athena asked. "And is there any information about where they're from."
"Just give me a moment." The manager tapped a few things into his computer. "It's under Dr and Mrs Kendall. The profile information shows they are from Hershey, Pennsylvania."
"I'm going to kill him." Buck muttered, pulling his phone out.
"Buck-" Bobby warned as Buck stepped forward, but was ignored.
"Is this Mrs Kendall?" He asked, showing a photo on his phone to the manager.
"Yes. Yes, that is Mrs Kendall."
"Buck, you know her?" Athena asked, pulling his phone towards her so she could see the picture.
"She's my sister." Buck replied, his voice quiet and laced with pain. "I didn't know they were in LA. I. I haven't even heard from Maddie in three years."
"We'll help her, Buck." Athena promised.
Buck mostly zoned out while the plan was made. Thinking about Maddie and what Doug must have put her through.
"Buck." He startled slightly when Athena spoke to him. "Were you aware of any issues between your sister and her husband?"
"I. I never liked Doug. There was always something about him that put me off, right from when Maddie first brought him home when I was ten or eleven. I knew he was controlling, but I didn't know for certain that he was hurting her. I tried to get her to leave with me, but she said she couldn't."
"Okay. We're going to go up there now. The manager has given us a key card. I want you to knock on the door and speak first, she might respond better if it's a voice she knows and trusts." Athena explained.
"Okay." Buck just followed their lead and was silent on the way up. Terrified of what they were about to find.
"We've got you, Buck." Chimney said, patting the younger man on the shoulder. "We're here for you and your sister, no matter what."
"You should prepare yourself for the worst. What we see on the other side of that door might not be pretty."
Buck nodded and stepped up to the door. He knocked on the door in a quick pattern, one that had been muscle memory since he was a kid. The secret knock he and Maddie had when he was little, so they could get each others attention with out alerting their parents. Then he called out. "LAFD."
They all listened for any response. After a few seconds they heard a pained whimper.
"Maddie, is that you?" Buck called, resting his head against the door.
"Evan?" Came the quiet response from inside the room.
"Yeah, Maddie. It's me." Buck replied.
"Ask if she's alone?" Athena whispered to him.
"Maddie, are you alone in there? Or is there someone with you?"
"I'm alone." She called back.
"Can you open the door for me?"
"No." Her voice cracked, pain evident in her words. "I can't move."
"Okay. Maddie, I have my team, the 118, with me, as well as some police officers. There is one I trust beyond anything else, her name is Sergeant Athena Grant. We have a key card from the front desk, can we come in?" He asked, not wanting to do anything that would startle her.
"Please." The quiet response came, a whimper at the end of it.
Athena quickly tapped the key card and opened the door. Buck was first into the room.
"Maddie?" He called, eyes darting around. She was on the floor near the bed, covered in bruises.
"Buck, just be careful not to touch anything. We need to preserve the room for evidence." Athena said from behind him, before speaking into her radio, presumably putting out a BOLO for Doug.
"Oh, Maddie." Buck whispered, falling to his knees by her, taking in her injuries. She looked broken. The thing that concerned him the most was the makeshift bandages around her abdomen, specifically where she was bleeding through them. "Hen." He shouted, knowing that skill above his EMT training was needed. He would have called for Chimney as well, but he was unsure of how Maddie would react to an unfamiliar man at this point.
"Let me through, Buck." Hen said quietly, slipping in with the medical bag.
"Maddie, this is Hen. She's one of the best paramedics. She's going to take care of you, okay?" Buck introduced them. Letting Hen take charge of assessing Maddie.
"Hi, Maddie." Hen said softly. "One thing we are going to have to do is share stories about your little brother there. Oh, I bet he was trouble growing up."
"Always." Maddie replied with an approximation of a smile.
"You mean never." Buck retorted, handing supplies to Hen as she needed them.
When it came time to move Maddie, it was difficult. Buck and Hen couldn't transfer her onto a backboard alone, and Maddie tensed up when Bobby and Chimney came closer.
"Maddie, it's okay. They're safe. This is Chimney- that's a long story and I'll explain later- he's a paramedic and can be a bit of a pain in the ass-" Buck said.
"You're one to talk." Chimney grumbled.
"And he thinks he's funny." Buck continued as if he hadn't been interrupted. "And this is Bobby. He's my Captain, one of the best people I've ever met. He's even teaching me how to cook."
"We'll take care of you, Maddie. Family of Buck is family of ours."
They got her onto the backboard and onto the gurney. Buck clinging to her hand the whole way down to the ambulance. Anything could happen from then on, but at least they had people on their side.

Have you seen the discourse with Maddie happening in the fandom? I was wondering if you could share some Buckley sibs headcanons,,, yours always makes me smile
Hi Nonnie!
I've seen a little bit sadly. It’s super disappointing that some people can't see the beauty of Buckley Siblings' relationship. I've had to put a block on the discourse tag though because I'm the type of person who will dig incessantly if I get a shred of mess and all that ends up doing is making me mad and then suddenly I'm upset for hours afterwards because I can't shake the feeling which is when I don't get any writing done. We've got to take care of our mental health just as much as everything else and I live by my number one philosophy which is to be kind and respectful and to mind my own business. I like what I like, read what I want, write what feels right, and I stopped letting others dictate what makes me happy.
Here's some Buckley Siblings HCs just for you! Some of them I've featured in fics and some I've just had floating around in my brain:
Buck can drink his coffee black but he prefers it with sugar and maybe a little cream. This is because that's how Maddie takes hers. When they were younger and Maddie started drinking coffee, she would let Buck have a sip of hers until eventually she just would make him his own (much smaller) cup.
Maddie bought her Jeep with her own money. She'd been saving up cash because her parents would drag their heels on helping her get any source of independence so she decided to do it herself. Buck saved up about 80 dollars (mostly in ones) that he rolled up and put in a little box before he gave it to her for her birthday. In return Maddie told him he got "front seat dibs".
Maddie taught Buck how to swim. She did it because one time Buck cannonballed into the deep end before he proceeded to panic and Maddie had to go in and yank him above water. He clung to her like a koala for a few lessons and so when Maddie finally had to just dunk him and teach him how to put his head underwater she did that thing you do to babies and blew on his face. He couldn't even be mad about it because he touched the bottom of the pool which was awesome!
Any Father's Day/Mother's Day activities that Buck did at school he just made for Maddie.
Any event that happened at school where parents would come for lunch or whatever, Maddie would get a note (she got very good at forging her mother's signature) that would get her out of a few classes so she could walk over to Buck's school.
The first time Buck climbed a tree, he got stuck and Maddie had to come get him.
Maddie gave Buck the safe sex talk in the parking lot of JC Penneys. There were pamphlets.
When Maddie was first dating Doug, she was driving Buck to practice (which her parents refused to do because they thought Buck wouldn't be able to figure out a way to get there so then it solved their problem of him not playing but they were so wrong) and got a flat tire. Doug came and helped her change it but Buck hated all the little comments Doug would make so he asked his dad to teach him how to change a flat (one of the few things Philip Buckley was actually pretty eager to be involved in).
Buck grew up with Maddie defending him constantly whenever his mom and sometimes his dad would say something particularly harsh so when he started to push back it was usually to defend Maddie because that was around the time she was starting to chafe at their insistence to stay quiet and hidden from the world in their restrictive grief. Maddie deserved to live her own life and even if it tasted like vinegar on his tongue to say it, he would every time his mom or dad made some backhanded about her going off to live with Doug in Boston. Whenever Maddie would come back to town to visit, Buck would beg his parents not to hound her because one time it got so bad, Maddie cut her visit short and didn't call for months. In turn, Maddie always respected Buck's choices. She may not have agreed with them but she would back him no matter what.
Buck was the only one of their family to show up to Maddie and Doug's wedding.
Maddie taught Buck how to ride a bike which was confirmed via canon so I was VINDICATED but Maddie also taught Buck how to drive. She came back to Hershey the summer Buck turned 16 and helped him get in his hours he needed driving with an adult before taking his test.
During the summers, Maddie would sign Buck up for the summer reading program at the library. Buck only had to read ten books to get a ten dollar gift card to an arcade that she'd planned on taking him for his birthday but Buck decided to read the fifty books that you needed to get a gift card for a pizza party so he and Maddie could go.
Birthdays weren't really a thing in their house but Buck and Maddie always tried to do something for each other. Even when he was away Buck made sure to send Maddie flowers on her birthday to the hospital.
Buck never really knew he was smart until he met the 118. Like he knew he was smart but he didn't know he was smart until Bobby said something. But he never thought he was stupid either because Maddie went out of her way make sure he knew that growing up. She would introduce Buck with a fun fact always. "This is my little brother, Evan. He just made varsity for football at his school!" "This is Evan, my little brother. He made honor roll this semester!"
The Jeep was their escape for a long time so it was an easy choice when Maddie saw that Buck needed a more permanent one.
When Maddie would get in a fight with her parents (which was often) she would go to her room and fume because she needed a minute to be alone and Buck would sit outside her door and stick his fingers under it. Sometimes when he could hear Maddie crying, he'd shove a tissue under the door too. Sometimes Maddie would hold his fingers.
Buck's favorite holiday was Fourth of July because he and Maddie would go get the biggest mixed ICEEs and then sit with the top of the Jeep off to go watch the fireworks.
Buck one time called Maddie in a panic because he got roped into taking someone to prom and he had no idea what a corsage was
Maddie and Buck have very strong opinions about corn on the cob. Like STRONG opinions. Bobby does too so it much be a Midwestern thing but Chimney made the mistake of making a throw away comment about how he heard New Jersey was known for having the best corn and he lived to regret it.
Maddie hates hiking but Buck loves it because he can climb things. So, Maddie found him a rock climbing gym and got him a membership his fifteenth birthday.
Coming from the household that they did where the emotional neglect was so apparent should've crippled Buck and Maddie but instead it made two beautiful people who care very deeply about one another. They saved each other and I love them so much!

Tags: Buckley!Sibling, Slow-Burn, so fucking slow cause i’m starting before they even meet, probably will write about lots of trauma cause im a slut for that stuff Word Count: 2537
Tumblr media
On the outside, the Buckley siblings were perfect. They were always there for each other, protecting each other from harm. Their pinkie-promises. But the truth was, they had a lot of trauma. And while Maddie and Buck had each other, that had never been the case for Elliott. Made even worse by the fact that their parents had little to no care for their children.
Elliott had been born in 1994, an unplanned pregnancy. And Margaret and Phillip had made that very clear, pretty much her entire life. Margaret more than her father. And while Maddie and Buck had never made any comments about it, they had always been a touch distant with her growing up. When Buck was getting into trouble and getting injured, and Maddie was taking care of him and patching him up, Elliott was down at the arcade. And when Maddie was running off to Boston with Doug, and Buck was off on his adventures, Elliott was couch-surfing through some of her friends' places before she too was able to run off and start her life.
She had known she wanted to be a firefighter since she was thirteen, when her favourite arcade had burned down from faulty electrics. She had been there, of course she had. She had been the one to dial 9-1-1, and gotten the owner out of the backroom. The firefighters who had responded had praised her, and told her she’d make an amazing firefighter one day.
She had done all the training, passed all the tests. And she was officially ready to start her firefighting career, she had a few offers across the country. Her scores had been unbelievable, but she picked the one that sounded the most like home. And that was where she was heading. A flight to LA, a perfectly normal flight. The flight attendant was over with a young boy, who had a stack of cards in his hands and Elliott couldn’t help but smile as she got herself ready for landing. It wouldn’t be her first time in the city, but she was looking forward to her fresh start. But suddenly everything felt like it was going in slow motion, the asshole up front had sent his drink flying in the air as the flight attendant had fallen down. The plane had dropped suddenly, the drinks cart falling down the aisle. The flight attendant only narrowly missed it, screams of shock and horror sounded throughout the aircraft. The flight attendant told everyone to get their seatbelts on, nice and tight and Elliott wasn’t about to ignore that. This plane was crashing.
“Brace yourselves for emergency landing,” the flight attendant said, the panic evident in her voice as she looked at the sea of passengers.
v^√√v^──√v^√v^──√v^√√v^──
The brunette had gotten herself free from her seat, pulling her hair up and into a tight, high ponytail so it would be out of her face. She looked around, assessing the situation. The plane had crashed into the water, several people were trapped in their seats but some were already getting out on their own like she had. The plane was split in two, almost thirds as she assessed the crack above her. Some of the passengers were getting out and onto the wing, some just taking the risk and diving into the water. She shook her head, looking around at some of the trapped and injured. There were so many dead, so many who didn’t survive the crash. She couldn’t believe this was how she was making her grand entrance to LA.
“Mommy, come on, we have to go.”
“Are you all right?”
Elliott turned around, thankfully the first responders had arrived. She had been helping some of the trapped to the split in the plane. But there were a few that she hadn’t been able to help. The elder firefighter was kneeling beside the magician boy and his mother, with the younger one taking off his bag.
“No, my…”
“Are you trapped?” the Elder pushed, as the younger came up and pushed the chair.
“No! Don’t- don’t, stop!” Elliott yelled as she moved up from the back of the plane where she had been checking pulses on some of the unfortunate. The mother was screaming. “Her legs are pinned, don’t touch the chair.”
“Wait- Elliott?!” The younger firefighter’s eyes went wide as he heard her voice, stopping him from injuring the poor mother.
“Firefighter Buckley, Station 118. Not that I’ve actually started, yet,” she announced, raising a hand to cover her eyes as the bright light from the helicopter attempted to blind her.
“You’re starting now. Captain Nash, 118,” the Elder told her, his hand resting on her shoulder with a nod of his head. “You helped get those people outside?”
“Some of them, yes, sir. I tried to free as many people who got trapped as possible, the ones who could. But Tammy, her legs are pinned. And the kid doesn’t want to leave his mother.”
“Okay, come on, kid, we need to get you out-”
“No, I’m not leaving without you!”
“Okay, baby, listen. Look, look,” Tammy started to say to her son, looking up at Captain Nash. “The firemen are here, okay? I need you to get on their boat so they can do their job,” she said, nodding her head slowly as she cupped his chin. “If everyone is worried about you and your pretty face, how are they gonna do what they need to do to save me?” But the boy still didn’t seem fully convinced. “Have I ever lied to you?” His head shook, no. “Then you have to believe me. I will be with you again, so soon. Mommy loves you so much. Do this for me.”
The boy nodded his head, and then the younger firefighter was moving in to lift up the boy and carry him out.
“Okay, you’re good. Take him, Buck.”
The three watched as the two walked to the end of the plane towards the boat. Bobby moved over Tammy’s shoulder, promising her that this wouldn’t be the last time she saw her son. But then the plane was shifting, and they had to brace themselves. They were running out of time.
Elliott moved out, while Captain Nash was getting Tammy free. She went to go see if she could find any more survivors when she heard the thudding coming from the toilet, the same time as another firefighter.
“Help, please!”
“It’s filling up with water!”
Both females were racing forward to assess the situation, the one in uniform was attempting to pull the door.
“They’re trapped in there,” she announced, as the young firefighter from before was approaching. He, along with the brunette, tried to get the debris free from in front of the toilet door. But it wouldn’t budge. It was then that he got the idea, to tie a rope around the debris and to the boat.
Elliott watched as the pair in uniforms did their job, there was little she could do to assist but her eyes were widening when they were told to stay clear. And she was dropping to the ground with a thud as the boat pulled the debris out quickly. Then the female in uniform was getting up and helping the couple out of the toilet. Elliott was slow to get up admittedly but she was also now wearing soaking wet jeans, and she had a head injury she wasn’t aware of.
“Come on, let’s get on the boat,” the uniformed female was telling the couple, and her. Trying to herd them along. But even after she was on the boat, she was looking at both Buckley siblings who were not rushing to get onto the boat.
“Bobby, we need to evacuate,” Buck was saying into his radio, looking back down to the plane where the Elder was.
“I need a minute.”
“In a minute, you’ll be dead.”
The blond ran his fingers through his hair, staring at the brunette in front of him. She was grabbing the rope from before, throwing it out to the boat and yelling instructions for them to tie it to the boat. He reached for the rope from her hands.
“I’ll go, you get in the boat.”
“No, you go-”
“Elliott, go!” He yelled, before he was rushing back to where Captain Nash was.
“Evan!” She yelled after him, but the plane was sinking faster and she didn’t have a choice anymore as she jumped off the plane and swam towards the boat. She paused her swimming to look back as she heard yells from inside the sinking plane, and then saw the blond head of her brother popping up from the water. “Evan!” She yelled at him.
“No! Bobby!” He yelled, watching as the plane sank below the water. “Bobby!”
Elliott swam over to him, her arm wrapping around his neck as she tried to swim him to the boat. “Evan, we have to go!”
He looked at her, eyes wide as he nodded his head. He turned to swim with her towards the boat, yelling at the woman to lift her up first before he too was getting in. The uniformed female was wrapping them up in the blankets, before looking out at where the plane had sunk.
A rescue team was lowering from the helicopter, taking a dive into the water. And when he came back up, was holding onto Captain Nash and Tammy. Elliott stood up from her seat, throwing her arms into the air with a cheer.
“I told you, Tammy! I told you they’d save you!”
“Okay, please sit down, ma’am,” the uniformed female was telling her, helping her to sit back down before she was shining a flashlight in her eyes.
“I’m fine, oh, I’m fine,” she promised, with a nod of her head as she panted heavily. “Not the entrance I was expecting to make, but I’m doing great.”
“Hen, this is my baby sister, Elliott,” Evan was explaining, gesturing to the brunette sitting next to him.
“Firefighter Buckley, with the 118. And I think I just did my first emergency,” she introduced herself, holding out her hand to Hen.
“Well, Elliott, it’s lovely to meet you.”
v^√√v^──√v^√v^──√v^√√v^──
Elliott had gotten checked out by some of the paramedics back on the beach, and now she was looking around for her brother. While she had not been expecting to see him at all, the last place she would have expected to run into him again was when her plane crashed.
“Evan!” She yelled out to him, wrapped up in a blanket to keep her warm as she walked up to him. He was standing on the phone.
“Let me, uh, see what I can find out,” he said as he held a hand up to her, brows furrowed together. And then he was hanging up his phone. “What are you doing here?” He said, his arms were wrapping her up in a big hug as he lifted her off of her feet.
“I- I live here now, I work here,” she told him, shaking her head as she looked up at him. “You’re a firefighter?”
“Yeah, I, uh. Work with the 118,” he said, as he looked down at her. “You too, huh?”
“Firefighter Buckley, reporting for duty,” she beamed with pride at her accomplishment.
“Hey, uh, have you heard from Maddie?”
“Not since you guys both up and left,” she said, shrugging her shoulders as she pulled the blanket around her body tighter.
“Elli, we didn’t-”
“You did. You both ran off, went to go live your lives. Left me with them, but it’s okay,” she said to him, raising her head to look at him. “I forgive you.”
That wasn’t entirely true, she hadn’t forgiven them. She probably never would, but there was no reason to allow it to get in the way of their work. Evan was nodding his head, arms wrapping around her tightly.
“Hey, look. I gotta get on, y’know. Firefighter duties, all that. Uh, I’ll call you? Or you can call me. My number is still the same.”
v^√√v^──√v^√v^──√v^√√v^──
It had taken Elliott a few days to get settled in her new apartment, as well as getting herself a whole new closet as she had lost everything in the plane crash. It was when she was sitting down on the couch that apartment came with, her feet resting on her coffee table when her eyes shifted over to her phone that lay beside her. She hadn’t called Evan yet, she wasn’t even sure what she wanted to say to him. If she even had anything to say to him.
“Hey, this is Buck,” he answered after the third ring.
“Hey, it’s uh… it’s Elliott,” she said, brushing her fingers through her hair as she dropped her head back on the cushion.
“Oh, hey, baby sis! How’s it going? How you finding LA?”
“It’s,” she paused, lips rubbing together. “It’s everything I expected,” she admitted, her eyes closing. “Had to buy a whole new wardrobe, haven’t even had my first day yet, that got pushed back-”
“Yeah, uh, sorry about that. Bobby’s going through something at the moment,” he said to her, with a sigh as it sounded like he was sitting down. “Everything’s okay though? Got a nice place to live and everything, right?”
“Yeah, it’s a nice enough place. Will be real pretty when I can afford to furnish it how I like,” she said, glancing around at the scarily naked living room she was sitting in.
“We will have to throw you a housewarming party! Hen said something about it, I think it’d be a great opportunity for you to get to know everyone at the firehouse.” He was on one of his rants, explaining all the different people he worked with. The ones on his shift, the people he liked.
“Evan- calm down, I’m not against it. Well, not fully. But I don’t have a lot of furniture, and once I have my first shift, I’ll be focusing on work, full-time. I can get to know everyone when I really meet them.”
“I guess that makes sense,” he admitted, even if he did sound a bit down that she was rejecting the idea of a party. “So, anything new with you? Got a lucky guy I need to give the talk to?”
Her eyes were rolling in the back of her head, shaking her head with a sigh. “No, Evan. I am very much single, and that’s how it will stay.”
There was a story there, of course there was. Evan could hear it in her voice, but he wasn’t going to push her. Not until she was ready.
“Ah, shit. Sorry Elli, I gotta run. We will have a proper chat soon though, I promise.”
And then he hung up. She was used to this though, being their last priority. Something else was always way more important than her. And she was used to it. But that didn’t mean it didn’t sting. Especially when he was the only person she knew here in LA.

n...urse (the touch of a soulmate can heal you from affliction and vice versa).
Trigger warning for mentions of abuse
*****
Maddie had been told that almost everyone has a soulmate out there. Somewhere out there someone was waiting for her who with only a touch could help her heal her, and with only a touch from her, she could heal them.
She had witnessed it a few times, her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends of the family, even in school once. Maddie had always been impatient and when, aged 19, she saw a hot, cute man who was five years older than her, she instantly fell in love. She forgot about her soulmate while she tried to get his attention. One day on campus she tripped over her shoelace and cursing under breath she looked up to see the man she had been infatuated with helping pick her books up.
He introduced himself as Doug Kendall, he gave her a hand to pull herself up. She laughed to herself, introducing her self as Maddie Buckley to him. She quietened the voice in the back of her head that screamed at her, telling her that he was not her soulmate.
But he was Hot so she did not care.
The two became inseparable, Maddie spending all her time with him, if it meant losing contact with one or two friends, then, oh well. It’s for the greater good.
Time passed and with one thing leading to another the two married. Maddie did spare a thought for her soulmate, secretly wishing he was either in a happy relationship or dead, so they were never wondering when they would meet.
The worst mistake she made was when she mentioned soulmates in front of him, he got so angry, telling her that it's not true and he made sure she knew nit to ever talk about such nonsense again. And she never did.

Most teams that fumble the ball four times don’t win by four touchdowns.
But not your Eagles.
They win big, and they have fun doing it. They do the electric slide. They take faux-team photos. They choreograph a bowling routine and all fall down together in the end zone.
You would be doing it, too, if you were slapping around the National Football League on a weekly basis. The Eagles have won four straight games by 20+ points.
“This is a big fucking deal,” Joe Biden once said. He wasn’t talking about the Eagles, but he might as well have been, because they’re 10-1 and sitting in the driver’s seat for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. With the Saints going down in Los Angeles, the Vikings are now the Birds’ biggest seeding threat. But Minnesota has a difficult schedule looming, with road trips to Atlanta and Carolina in consecutive weeks and a matchup at Lambeau still on the docket.
That’s good to know, but it shouldn’t really matter. The Eagles control their own destiny, and if they play like they did on Sunday, nobody is stopping ’em.
This game was over before it started, with Chicago mustering 33 first half yards and 0 first downs.
Makes it hard to win when you’re rolling out a rookie quarterback and putting up these numbers:
1) Just getting started
Alshon Jeffery is beginning to look like the WR1 we thought we were getting this offseason.
No, he didn’t light up the scoreboard on Sunday like Julio Jones or Antonio Brown, but he finished with a healthy 5 catches for 52 yards and a touchdown– his fifth score in four games.
Jeffery looks more comfortable in the offense and he’s doing his best work on the back-end of the schedule. Break the season in half, and it looks something like this:
First eight games = 25 catches on 62 targets, 416 yards, 3 touchdowns
Last three games  = 15 catches on 27 targets, 203 yards, 4 touchdowns
He’s had about 33% of his yardage production in the last three games and contributed 57% of his touchdowns during that same time frame. In Weeks 1-8, he only caught 40% of the balls thrown his way. That number is up to 55%. His yards per catch is down from 16.6 to 13.5, probably because four of his grabs were touchdowns in shorter field red zone situations.
  2) No fix needed
The Eagles ran for 176 yards total, some of which was added in prolonged garbage time. Jay Ajayi and LeGarrette Blount had runs of 25+ yards, but eacl also fumbled the ball (Blount twice), so it was a bit sloppy overall after last week’s showcase in Dallas.
One thing the Birds did do well on some of those big runs was execute on the blocking schemes that worked in Big D, namely on the Blount breakout, the one where he hurdled some fool:
Friendly reminder that @LG_Blount will jump right over you! #FlyEaglesFly http://pic.twitter.com/FTZ9v3ZZyZ
— NFL (@NFL) November 26, 2017
The hole comes from a nice one-two Brent Celek and Lane Johnson combination. Celek is actually lined up off the line of scrimmage and traps inside to cut off the defensive tackle, Aqiem Hicks. Lane Johnson moves Isaiah Irving about five yards backwards and Nelson Agholor does a nice job of sealing cornerback Kyle Fuller.
Similar to last week, Jason Kelce and Halipoulivaati Vaitai simply ignore the defensive line and go right to the second level, laying blocks on the linebackers:
Again, just great run blocking schemes.
  3) Why even try?
The Bears bears came into this game as a top-10 running team.
They finished with 14 carries for 6 yards. Tarik Cohen ran it twice for -11 yards and Jordan Howard rushed for 6 yards on 7 carries.
It’s ridiculous, really, considering that this is what Howard has done in 2017:
They limited a guy with four 100 yard games to just six yards on the ground. Six!
And Cohen is no joke either. He ran 9 times for 44 yards and touchdown last week.
So the pair that went for 169 yards against Detroit combined for -5 yards yesterday. That’s crazy, bro.
  4) Situational football
Carson Wentz remains the NFL’s best third down quarterback.
After the win, this is now his third down stat line:
59-91
826 yards
64.8 completion percentage
9.08 average
11 touchdowns
2 interceptions
5 sacks
124.4 QB rating
15 rushes for 114 yards
Even more impressive might be Carson’s numbers inside the red zone:
27-42
64.3 completion percentage
17 touchdowns
0 interceptions
0 sacks
115.3 QB rating
A high IQ and situational understanding, that’s Carson Wentz in a nutshell.
  5) Ref, you don’t suck
When is a block in the back not a block in the back?
When the officials get together to talk about it.
Seriously though, nice job by that crew to take away a bad penalty call against the Bears on a play where an Eagles cornerback was barely touched. It’s proof that we can get it right when we take a minute to think about it. Now we just have to apply that type of thinking to Congress.
Here’s the play in question, where #13, Kendall Wright, makes slight contact with Patrick Robinson:
6) Triple digits
Zach Ertz eclipsed 100 yards receiving for the first time this year.
More importantly, he looked like himself while grabbing 10 balls for 103 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted 12 times and ripped Chicago open with that patented seam move for chunky gains.
He only caught 2 balls for 8 yards in his return from injury last week, so it’s good to see him bounce back in this one. He’s neck and neck with Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham in most statistical categories, even with that two-week slide.
  7) Horseshoes and hand grenades
This could probably go in the “situational football” entry, but I wanted Carson Wentz to have his own section.
You know it’s going right for you when your punt returner shows the smarts to grab a teammate, pull him away from a live ball, and avert disaster:

— Matt Mullin (@matt_mullin) November 26, 2017
  8) Doug’s worst call?
Not many, but there was a third down sack where Wentz bootlegged to the left and had to throw across his body. The defensive end didn’t bite on the fake and blew up the play. They ran a similar look in the third quarter with not a lot of success.
They’ve done it before this year, and Wentz really isn’t bad in those situations, but they’re so strong in other areas that it just feels pointless to roll him out to his left.
Other candidates for this entry might be his second quarter challenge, which isn’t even so much about being off-base. The challenge was okay, but it seems redundant when you know that Doug is going to go for it on fourth down anyway.
The 4th and 6 call in the third quarter was also a bit iffy. Wentz was rolling to his stronger right side that time, but I’m generally not a fan of cutting the field in half. The pass attempt to Nelson Agholor was almost picked off and returned for a huge gain.
  9) Doug’s best call?
There was the obvious decision to go for it on 4th and 1 during the second drive. Doug cooked up a big power left formation and let Ajayi run it for a tough yard. It paid off with what would eventually be the game-winning touchdown just a few plays later.
They also went for it on 4th and 1 just before the two-minute warning, which was another no-brainer for Pederson. The Eagles are 10 for 10 on 4th and 1 attempts this season, so the data says… yes… let’s go for it.
Overall, good game from Doug and an easy win. I still think he could pull Wentz a little earlier in the fourth quarter, but if that’s my biggest complaint, then we’re really just splitting hairs here.
  10) Stick to murder?
This sign was hanging from the back of a truck while fans were tailgating outside of Lincoln Financial Field:
That seems… a little excessive. I know people like to be offended by everything these days, but I’m not sure that joking about murder is the path we want to go down.
As far as the broadcast, I kind of like Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis. Davis can be a bit much to handle at times, and sometimes he just needs to let the game breathe, but he offers good insight and does what a color commentator is supposed to do. After a few weeks of narcoleptic broadcasting, I’m fine with the energy and enthusiasm.
They did sneak a couple of Rocky mentions in there, but it is what it is. We’re just gonna have to live with it forever.
And I do agree with Burkhardt when he says, verbatim, “I gotta be honest, I hate the electric slide,” but it looks a whole lot better when these guys are doing it:
Can't even hate on a team that does the electric slide http://pic.twitter.com/U1fqJPWzDN

You can’t. You can’t hate on a team that does the electric slide.
