Strawberry Seeds and Love Potions. (T, 2.4K words)
@harringroveweekoflove day 2: LOVE POTION && MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES. Also including: witch Robin, post season 3 recovering Billy, flustered but giving it his best Steve, and cat boys. Or cat men? No, cat boys.
***
The coffee mug clicked onto the table with an otherworldly menace. Steve’s brown eyes darted to it, then back up to Robin. He furrowed his brows in a question. But before he could open his mouth, she held up her hand.
“It’s not poison,” she explained.
“Could have fooled me, Robs,” Steve hissed.
“It’s called a potion, dingus. It’s going to help!” She pushed the cup farther down the bar. The diner around them was mostly closed, and Robin was the only waitress in the place. Her peach colored apron brought out the green of her wide, devious eyes.
“Potion... poison... that’s like one letter different,” Steve leaned back in his stool away from the mug.
“Wow, so you know how to spell. What other skills will you showcase, The Amazing Harrington?” Robin’s lips curled up in an evil grin, leaning her body over the bar to dig the insult farther.
Steve just scoffed. Putting his elbow up on the bar and shielding himself as he tried to get back to the open College text book he was supposed to be reading. All the words were rushing together in swirls of black and white. He pushed his thumb into his curved bottom lip to try and force himself to focus, chewed on the pad of it, but he could swear the mug was mocking him.
Could swear he could smell that strawberry pink liquid Robin had poured for him when he ordered a simple black coffee.
“Drink it,” Robin snapped.
“No,” Steve growled.
“Are you going to grow a backbone and actually confess then?” She quirked one brow up.
Her face was so condescending. So smug. Steve hated how much he knew that look, how it made him sort of fond for her.
“I mean,” he sighed. His walls crumbling in defeat. His fingers coming up to join in worrying his bottom lip. “I mean I might?”
“It’s been a year Steve. A year of following him around like a little stray kitten! A year of ‘Oh Billy, I’ll give you a ride!’ ‘Oh Billy, how was physical therapy?’ ‘Oh Billy, pay attention to me!’—“
“I get it, I get it!” Steve turned towards her again to motion with his hand to keep it down. Waving his wide palm around until Robin’s pursed face cracked into a giggle. “Just keep it down, would you?”
And he turns over his shoulder to survey the empty diner before he’s got enough courage to look at her again.
“Yeah, okay. I’ve got a fat, stupid crush on Billy. And I know that I’m the most embarrassing and dumb guy you know. But...,” he trails off. Eyes wandering back down to the coffee cup. “It’s not the same as Nancy Wheeler or even Tammy Thompson. So much can— no, so much has gone wrong. If I... confessed right now, It would just make everything too much for him.”
His fingers nervously tick across the mint green bar. Wishing like hell he could cross them in front of his chest and make a barrier.
Robin takes a step forward. Her own fingers an inch away from his. She twitches like she can’t make up her mind if she wants to grab them. Like someone worrying their bottom lip if they are going to pick the last slice of pie in the diner’s glass container. But she does, reaching out to lay her skinny fingers and their chipping black nail polish over his own.
“Dingus,” she starts lovingly, “you don’t know any of that.”
Steve scoffs, rolls his eyes like he’s going to turn away, but Robin holds his hand tightly.
“You don’t know if it’s too much for him, or what he wants. And you don’t,” Robin took a second before continuing, her breath hitching, “you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”
Hawkins, Indiana is the poster town for unknown tomorrow’s. Steve knows way too well about that. The tunnels crawling with slime and vines that play host to the monsters of the world.
But Billy, he surely knows better than anyone. It’s been a whole year but noone’s going to ever forget what he did. What happened to him under the control of a creature called The Mind Flayer. How Billy used himself like a human shield and died to try to make up for it. Just to come back with an electric jolt to his tattered heart.
They had to stitch new lungs inside his chest. He called himself Zombie Boy now. Called the patchwork scars heavy metal.
Steve just smiled. Nodded his head as he watched Billy climb out the crumbled wreckage of his shell. Climb out a new man, a man Steve caught himself falling head over heels for.
“You’re right, Robs,” Steve exhales.
“Oh, what was that?” Robin giggled, leaning in to hear better.
Steve pushed her away by their joint hands. Wiggling his fingers afterwards as if cursed.
His breath quipped and held tight in his chest as he turned back to the coffee mug. It sat waiting for him. The light red liquid swimming with foam and black seeds at the top. As if no matter how long it sat, it was always freshly prepared.
Steve gripped the handle of the white mug hard. Thought about how quick Billy’s body hit the ground when he died. How quick it all felt to Steve who had to helplessly stand back and watch it all.
He lifted the mug to his lips and drank in desperate, greedy gulps.
And as he finished it and slammed the ceramic back down on the bar, he didn’t immediately feel different. His mouth felt strange, the red juice had a powdery after-taste and much more seeds than his gag reflex was expecting. But as he screwed up his face from the flavor, he didn’t feel changed. Or empowered. Or whatever Robin was trying out with this magic spell.
“I don’t—,” Steve started, but his voice stopped just as it started. His head pounded like a drum was beating right next to his ears.
Doubling over in his stool, he gripped at the sides of his head in a panic. His whole skull felt like it was vibrating. Shifting around even, his scalp moving at the top of his head as if something were to burst out.
Steve grabbed two fist fulls of his hair and groaned through the wave of pain. Burying his chin in his chest to try and stop the noises before they came. It was so painful, but somehow only lasted a second.
As sudden as it came, he felt fine again.
Steve jerked his head up to scream at Robin , when he noticed her eyes wandering to the top of his head.
He followed them with hesitant fingers, slowly running up his now messy head of quaffed brown locks under his fingertips brushed something new.
Giving an undignified yelp, he drew his hand backwards as if burnt. His eyes were wide and pleading with Robin. But she watched him right back with the same face. As if she didn’t make this, as if it wasn’t her poison potion that created this.
Steve timidly touched the new addition to his head again. This time he didn’t finch as his fingertips sank into hair that felt soft as fur. Following it up to a point, and then feeling as it curved inwards to softer peach fuzz.
He could feel something, as his fingers moved, he could feel them as easily as if he were touching the lobes of his ears.
Because he was touching his ears.
A quick glance to a dingy mirror hanging at the back of the bar confirmed it for him. There was a pretty pair of brown cat ears sprung from the top of his head.
“Robin,” he breathed. Unable to fully grasp how he felt. “What was that drink exactly?”
She blinked at him, gathering her thoughts before she cleared her throat. “It’s um, it’s supposed to be a charm. An aid, like-like an enhancer. It said it would bring out the traits that the person you craft the potion for desires the most.”
Then she stopped to laugh, her red lips caught between gaping open or turning up on the corners in a mocking laugh. “I didn’t— wow! I thought worst case scenario would be you’ll turn into an asshole like you were in high school. B-But this?”
Steve looked from her back to the mirror. Wrapping one hand around the pointed triangle of his ear. Pushing it down just to watch it perk back up again.
“I’m... I’m a cat boy?” Steve stutters out a gasping breath.
“Well, more like a cat man, really,” Robin tries to help. “Come on, you’re almost old enough to buy beer.”
“Really helpful, Robs, thanks so much for the curse and now the insults!” He shouts.
Holding up her hands in defense, her smile doesn’t drop. Even in her shoulders Steve can see she’s quivering with laugher.
He feels along the base of his new ears. How the fur is the same color and melts almost perfectly into his own silky hair. How it feels good, actually, to scratch his blunt nails there just like how a house cat would enjoy it.
“This isn’t some trait. Or some, something that Billy would find attractive in me.” Steve groans. “This is some freaky kink!”
Robin finally clasps her hand over her mouth to dam up the waterfall of laugher. It hits against her palm in a muffled, annoying, cruel noise. She shakes her head as if she wanted to argue but couldn’t get past how funny she found it.
“You must have mixed up the wrong stuff, Robin! Put the wrong magical thing in the mixture!” Steve tried to shake his head out to unstick his thoughts.
He runs his hands through his hair as he does when he gets flustered, and now his cat ears bend with the motion so they don’t get tugged on. Folding neatly onto his head before bouncing back up to attention.
It felt so weird, but somehow it didn’t feel very different at all. They acted as if they’ve always been there.
“Yeah, okay, that’s it,” Steve nodded to himself. “You gave me the wrong potion. It’s okay, it happens! Just whip up a new one that’s for reversing cat ears. That’s in your witch book right?”
Robin kept her hand over her mouth and kept shaking her head. She wasn’t replying to anything Steve said. And it was honestly making him more mad than the new ears on top of his head.
“Hey, is it really funny enough for all that?” he mused.
Then Steve looked back up at the mirror. He turned his head side to side to admire the way his ears moved with him. How they were his hair color on the outside then a flushed pink in the very middle. How there were strands of lighter brown between that and those reminded him of how highlighted his hair gets in the summer sun.
“I don’t know. I think they... I think they sort of suit me?” He shrugged.
Robin dropped her hands and her laugher was louder without it, but she managed to catch her breath to finally reply. “Oh, they suit you alright. You’re a natural at this stuff, Garfield.”
Steve furrowed his eye brows. Cat ears folding down on his head in defense. “I’m not orange,” he hissed back.
Robin opened her mouth with likely more insults and no actual help from the aspiring witch who caused all this mess, when she was interrupted. The bell above the entrance letting out a loud ding.
The front door, painted in matching mint green like the bar, swung open. And like he was summoned, like his ears were simply ringing so much from being talked about he hunted down the source, in walked Billy.
He was wearing a grey hoodie. One of many that he collected once he got discharged out of his hospital. This one Steve was familiar with, because it was his. Handed down with a coat and a couple other winter items as Steve feigned indifference over concern about Billy’s California blood staying warm. An old Hawkins High baseball league logo sitting right in the middle. It’s fading green and orange design still bright enough to make Steve’s breath catch in his throat.
“Hey, Harrington,” Billy greeted. He lifted his big, scarred hand to wipe the hood down from his head. Letting loose the wild mess of short curls that are regrowing on his head.
“Hey, Billy,” Steve croaked out. His voice was awkward. His face, he knew, must be blushing bright red.
He turned to seek help from Robin, but the swinging door that lead into the kitchen was rocking back and forth on its hinges. She must have run away as soon as Billy came in. And Steve was too busy watching his entrance to even notice.
Cursing under his breath, Steve racked his brain with an excuse. Some logical way to explain why he had sprouted two new fluffy ears off his head.
He felt like he was playing a pinball machine in his head. Flashing lights and jingling noises were going off. But nothing was coming to him. He couldn’t find any words to offer at all to Billy.
So he whipped his head to the side, watched as Billy stopped glancing around the empty diner to finally settle on Steve.
And he watches as Billy’s gorgeous, totally unfair pretty blue eyes lift to see the cat ears on his head.
“Woah, Harrington,” Billy exhales like he’s blowing a mouth full of cigarette smoke. “That’s really—,”
“I know, Billy, okay! It’s um, um?” Steve waves his hands around as if that can turn the wheels of his thinking some more. But he can’t think. Not well anyway, when Billy’s standing here looking so handsome, so warm, and so alive right in front of him.
“Yeah, okay, I can totally explain this—,”
Billy cuts him off with a soft chuckle. Just under his breath. Steve closes his mouth quick enough to make his teeth click.
“I don’t know, Steve. Ya don’t have to explain it. It’s kinda cute, actually,” Billy drawls out his words low and soft. And then smiles at him.
A second ticks by. Billy’s boots skid on the tile as he steps even closer. All the way until he’s right next to Steve. Grabbing the back of a stool right next to him.
And Billy hasn’t taken his eyes off Steve’s ears once. And he’s got a little sparkle in them like the first time Billy got a point over him during basket ball practice back in high school. And oh, oh.
“Cute?” Steve parrots back.
“Yeah, super cute,” Billy confesses.

A/N: Something sweet and Sam to satiate your appetite. I love you all and I hope you enjoy.
He was 6 feet 4 inches, and 220 pounds of raw muscle and hazel eyes. He absolutely oozed sexual energy and it took nearly everything in your power not to crawl across the bar and claim him as your own. You had imagined his broad hands running up and down your sides in a dimly lit motel room, one that smelled of stale smoke, the wallpaper yellowed by years of wear, holes worn in the carpet. But the two of you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
He rolled through town every few months with his brother, a shorter, slightly stockier man, but not any less attractive by any means.
You were a bartender at the local roadhouse, and when the boys came in you knew the shorter one liked a whiskey neat, with a side of the owner, Ellen’s daughter, Jo, and the taller one usually nursed a single pint of beer at the bar while the two of you made small talk in between patrons. The two of you never exchanged more than the small mundane details of your days, you didn’t even know his name.
“So, what brings you through this time?” You asked, wiping the inside of a beer stein down with a wet rag.
“Sam.” He started, his hazel eyes blowing dark with something you couldn’t quite figure out. Lust? Alcohol? You couldn’t quite tell, but it was definitely something.
“What?” You stopped your cleaning, setting the glass on the bar and leaning forward. Like you hadn’t quite heard the words come out of those perfect pink lips.
“My name. I know we don’t do names and I just sit here while my brother goes and gets in Jo’s pants. But I’m Sam, Sam Winchester.” He said softly, his hand wrapping around his pint glass as he tipped it up to his mouth to swill down some of the liquid inside.
“I’m Y/N,” You wiped your hands on your apron and stuck one out in a friendly gesture. He grasped it in his larger one, and for once, you felt safe.
“Beautiful,” He almost whispered the endearment, but it sounded loud, even in the crowded bar. Suddenly the outside world was just that. Outside, background noise to the musical sound of Sam’s laughter as you cracked a terrible joke. Background noise to your hushed conversation.
Before long it was 2:00 am and time for last call.
“Can I give you my number?” He bit his lip shyly. Shy was the absolute last thing you expected this man to be.
“So does that mean I’ll be seeing you again?” A smile tinged your lips as you grabbed a napkin and scrawled your name and number on it, sliding it across the bar.
“Hopefully. As long as Jo still wants to let Dean in her pants.” He replied with a small chuckle, tucking the napkin into the pocket of his oversized jacket.
You didn’t get a chance to quip back at the man before his bow-legged companion wandered back through the door, Jo following closely behind him, straightening out her tank top and smoothing out her mussed hair. Ellen simply rolled her eyes and you slid a double whiskey over to the one named Dean.
“Man, you are an angel in the desert aren’t you?” Dean mulled over the glass in front of him for a thoughtful second before downing the contents in one long swig.
“Damn.” You muttered under your breath. Even the roughest toughest hunters who had wandered into the bar couldn’t down a double of top-shelf whiskey like that.
“Regretting giving me your number now?” Sam chuckled, reaching across the bar into a stash of peanuts and taking a handful.
“No. Absolutely not. I’ve just never seen anyone do that. Not even the oldest, roughest, toughest hunters.” You mused pouring Sam another beer as the last of the patrons wandered out of the bar, and Ellen locked the door behind them.
“We ain’t ordinary, sweetheart,” Dean slurred as he pulled Jo onto his lap, diving in and peppering her neck with kisses while she giggled.
“I should probably get him back to the motel.” Sam laughed softly as he attempted to disentangle the two bodies, seemingly glued together by sweat and alcohol. It took nearly 20 minutes to separate the two, Dean spitting obscenities about Sam never letting him have any fun and Jo complaining she was a ‘grown ass woman’
“Promise you’ll call?” You winked at the brawny man as he all but carried his brother from the roadhouse.
“Cross my heart.” He flashed you a smile and with that, he disappeared out the door. Hopefully not forever.
**
It was 2 days before you heard from the boy again. You were in the middle of closing up the bar, sweeping the peanut shells from under the pool table when your phone began vibrating. An unknown number popped up and you hesitated before answering the call, cradling it between your shoulder and ear while you kept sweeping.
“Hello?”
“Is this Y/N?”
“This is she, who is this?”
“It’s Sam. Sam Winchester. From the other night?” You could almost see him cast those hazel eyes down to the floor, a slight chuckle rumbling through his body.
“Oh, your brother is the one banging Jo, right?” You laughed softly and leaned against the bar, a stupidly big smile plastered across your face.
“Guilty,” He admitted sheepishly, another laugh rumbled its way through the phone. It seemed to roll through your body, setting loose a horde of butterflies in your stomach.
“To what do I owe this pleasure then, Mr. Winchester?” You leaned forward on the counter as though he was in front of you and you were trying to soak up every last word from those perfect pink lips of his.
“I was just wondering if you were free Sunday morning for brunch? Dean says he’s meeting up with Jo the night before and won’t be home.”
“I’d love that, wanna go to Andy’s out near the highway?” It was one of your favorites.
“Sounds good, I’ll meet you at the roadhouse at 8:00 on Sunday morning.”
“It’s a date.”
**
Andy’s was a small mom and pop diner out by the highway. It was the one constant you’d had in your life since Ellen had brought you to the roadhouse nearly 8 years before. The checkered floors, aluminum table tops, and vinyl booths provided a sort of security blanket for you. The owner, Caroline was always there, a smile plastered on her round face, an apron tied around her waist. It was like coming home. Her husband, Andrew, was the restaurant’s namesake, and when he had passed 15 years ago, she couldn’t bear to let the restaurant wither away.
When you walked into the diner with Sam, Caroline’s eyes nearly bugged out of her head as you grabbed his hand lightly and led him to the booth in the corner where you always sat, you always came alone. He sat across from you, taking in the photographs on the wall, the neon signs pointing to the restrooms and the kitchen.
“Good Morning, doll, the usual?” Caroline’s sweet smile and sweet demeanor seemed to accent the already glaringly bright interior.
“Yeah, make it 2 for my, uh, friend here,” You gestured to Sam who still hadn’t taken his eyes off the photographs. You couldn’t help but admire the sharp angle of his jawline, covered in a light smattering of stubble.
“Alright darling, I’ll be right back.”
The silence that settled over the booth when Caroline disappeared was absolutely deafening and you wondered if you had made a mistake coming here with Sam. You looked down at your hands and began to pick at the skin around your nails when he finally spoke.
“It’s cute,” The deep rumble of his voice nearly startled you. You looked up and found yourself pulled in by the deep hazel pools underneath a mess of chestnut hair.
“It’s home. Well, as home as one can find out here,” You laughed softly while Caroline set down 2 cups of coffee and 2 glasses of orange juice, flitting back to the kitchen.
“What about Ellen, Jo, and the Roadhouse? I know I only see Jo when she gets plastered and bangs Dean, but I bet she’s not a terrible person to be around.” Sam slowly sipped his coffee, somehow never taking his eyes from you.
“Jo is great, she’s one of my best friends. Ellen’s like a mom to me, after my parents were killed by skinwalkers when I was 14, she took me in, and when I was old enough, she gave me a job at the roadhouse, it wasn’t exactly how I envisioned but, what can you do when you’re orphaned at 14 and have no one else around,” You bit back the hot tears that pricked the corners of your eyes.
“What did you want to be when you were 14?” Sam’s large hand came to rest on your arm and you smiled softly at the sentiment. No words were exchanged, but you felt like you had the first time you had met and he shook your hand, safe.
“I wanted to go to law school and become a lawyer. Constitutional Law, actually,” You quickly separated from his touch as Caroline set 2 plates of pancakes, bacon, and eggs down in front of the both of you.
“Anything else?” She asked sweetly, you shook your head no, said a quick thank you, and she was gone before you could blink.
“So law school?” Sam asked around a mouthful of fluffy pancakes. You swallowed down some of your orange juice before you spoke.
“Yeah. Mom was a lawyer, dad was a lawyer, and so it was almost an expectation that I would be a lawyer.”
“You never wanted to be though, did you?”
“I wanted to be a teacher. Elementary. But dad always said there was no money to be found in education so I relented and started pursuing law school. What about you? You don’t look like the type that would have ‘hunter’s life’ as his number one choice for a future.”
“I was the same. Well kind of, I was at Stanford when Dean showed up. I had an interview for law school the next Monday but I never made it. My girlfriend was killed by a demon and I’ve been on the road with Dean ever since. It’s not an easy life, that’s for sure but I’ve gotten used to it,” Sam shrugged and took another bite of his pancakes, a drop of syrup hanging off the edge of his lip.
“You’ve uh..got a little something,” You laughed softly and motioned to the side of your mouth.
“Thanks,” He chuckled softly, wiping away the sticky remains.
2 hours, 2 plates of pancakes a piece, 6 cups of coffee between the two of you and you had come to know Sam Winchester on a level you didn’t even know your closest friends on. He liked being a hunter but often fantasized about the white picket fence, apple pie life that he could have had if he would have stayed behind.
“We should probably head back to the roadhouse, Dean’s gonna start wondering what’s taking so long and Ellen’s probably about to send out a search party for me” You laughed softly and peeked at your watch, nearly 10:30. “Caroline, can I get the check?”
“It’s on the house today, sweetie. Be safe, and come back soon!” She chirped from behind the register and you couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across your face as Sam took your hand and led you back to the sleek Impala sitting in front of the restaurant.
The drive back to the roadhouse was spent in companionable silence, the radio was turned to an NPR station, the host droning on softly in the background. The windows were rolled down, a sweet breeze blowing in your face. Sam had one hand on the steering wheel and one long arm extended across the back of the bench seat.
“I had fun, um would you maybe wanna do this again?” Sam broke the silence as he threw the car in park in front of the roadhouse. You couldn’t help but smile at him and nod, maybe a little too eagerly.
“I’d like that,” You smiled sliding out of the car, shutting the door and leaning in through the open window.
“I’ll call you, cross my heart.”

Restart for checkpoints 1-4 (Group 3A)
Checkpoint 1
Store concept
Thank you for your comments. We have changed our mind now and get back to mural art. We will focus on tees with murals art. We want to have two lines of tees with murals about Fishtown history and music respectively. We will find the mural pieces in Fishtown about baseball, fish, old business etc. for the history line. For the music, we will search for the work of indie music. We may even find the elements outside Fishtown to collect more illustrations. We will only sell tees for the top, but we will produce some accessories such as bracelets, necklaces and glasses.
Store target market
- Aged 20 – 34
- Locals in this age range occupied 35 percent of Fishtown population
- Target at those who always wear in hipster and casual style

Store location
Our store will be located near Fishtown Tavern in the street of Frankford Ave. As there are many restaurants and bars, it will be a suitable place for people to chill out, especially young adults. The customers, who buy our clothes, can walk along the street to feel the atmosphere of Fishtown, and even bring this artistic form to their hometowns or become a part of Fishtown. The aesthetic environment of the street and the artistic walls also offer a good atmosphere to DIY.

(Not the final version)
Pre-event
We create a character and set an original story in Fishtown. This character will be an US young hipster who is the first time to go to Fishtown. The character will go through different spots in Fishtown to experience different things. This story will be released everyday as a diary format story on Facebook, let our customer to trace the story and kept updated. In every post, we will have a cliffhanger and provide them three choices about the next coming episode. The choice that got most likes will be designed into the next episode. For the ending episode, we will release it in the opening ceremony.
Opening ceremony
A party for our guests and walk-in customers. With indie vibes in the background, refreshment will be served. Amid the party, a creative workshop will be happening too in our shop. We will border an area in front of a white wall, hang plain white t-shirts on it and let anyone who attend the event that day includes designers, to have a chance on creating mural, as well as graphic tees. This not only can close the distance between the brand and our fans, but also let them know the very fundamental theme of our shop—incorporating local creativity with fashion. We will also share the ending of the story of Facebook on another wall and post the picture of the on-site story wall and on social media to invite more people on Facebook to join our party.
The event party will be from 2pm-9pm. We welcome walk-ins and hipster bracelets will be a giveaway for those who attend the party. A hashtag for our Facebook and instagram, a story for our Snapchat will be associated with our party name and the game we design, which is the second highlight of the party. We will use Snapchat to play a game with our customers. We put 5 tees on the wall, and ask people to find the place that certain mural art on the tees is from, giving a hint about the certain street they are from. As long as people can find the spot and take selfies with that mural art, they can send to our company snapchat, include in our story, then we can provide them membership or discount. Any people who participate can join the membership with over $100 consumption while after that day will require over $300 consumption. Membership will provide a annual 10% off and exclusive discounts. These social media will link the customers’ experiences back to us, also achieve the promotional goal. (Facebook, instagram, snapchat and tumblr)
At 7pm, a mini fashion show will start, models will wear the exclusive designs of our graphic tee and walk on a temporary stage, showcasing the first collection of our brand. We will recruit models among ordinary people on social media platforms in order to make the fashion show more down-to-earth.
Calendar
Checkpoint 3
Snapchat - Designers’ lives
We target at the young, funky, un-to-date hipsters. We will try to update our stories daily and have a live snapchat for our closest customers on some significant events. We will design a short clip to loop like a gif on our brand Snapchat story, this clip will be very hipster and show the time-limited discount (e.g. 30%off), we will set the deadline for the Story as 5 hours, so that people will follow and also keep updated to our Snapchat and check everyday for our surprise discounts on an irregular basis.
We might tape some video with own designer talking about the highlights of the fashion piece or showing some products that they designed. Also, to invite some local hipster figures to answer questions from our customers. We can also tape some fun facts about the street arts in Philly.
Whenever we decide to design new tee, we will shoot the 3 different graffiti from the wall and let them add ticks or text on to the next snapchat which is a polling sheet, then send to us as customer feedbacks.
Every video, photos, or text are well-designed in every story, we will create a custom snapchat filter
for every events, all the way to typesetting and editing.
These all fulfill the aesthetic satisfaction of the Snapchat users and put our brand in a more trendy position, providing up-to-date information of our brand or offer some knowledge that our customer cares.
We aimed to gain 20 followers each week.
Instagram - Extension of story (New characters)
Since Instagram is best at showing images, we will mainly display our products on it. Some customers may show they wear our tees on Instagram and tag us, then we will share their posts to interact with them. However, we will not forget to share the latest discounts or activities that have been announced on Facebook. Moreover, Instagram will act as an extension of the pre-event story of Facebook. We will post images of the adventure of other characters in Fishtown with wearing our tees in order to continue introducing different spots in Fishtown and the myth story. Our goal is to attract 30 followers each month.
Facebook - Products and Events
Facebook is the more effective platform for posting images and texts together and interacting with consumers, therefore it is used to publicize the pre-event story created by ourselves.
Besides, it will promote new products and discounts and activities. It will also update the latest clips of Snapchat and the accounts of other adventures in Fishtown plus the links directing to other platforms. We hope to gain 100 likes for all the episodes in total, 100 replies for choosing the resolution of the story and 80 followers each month.
Tumblr - Gifs
Since Tumblr is a very popular social media in US, we believe the fashion brand can have a relatively more flexible promotional platform on Tumblr, since they have gifs, and brands can mash all fundamental media into one post, make one post more fruitful in representation. Tumblr also focused heavily on the aesthetic and artistic sides, in addition to the flexibilities for users to modify themes freely and creatively, made easier for them to build the brand personality on this platform. Also, this platform focuses on visual graphics more than text, which can target on the people who are seeking for the lookbook of our brand, and reblogs on Tumblr is very efficient and is relatively an easy way to make one post viral. We may also offer some giveaway, like exclusive chokers or hipster style coffee cup pads, design the post with beautiful graphics and alluring texts, plus detailed instructions. The first 20 reblogs will be the winner for our decent giveaways. This way, our customers will follow our Tumblr and keep themselves updated, waiting for another round of giveaways. We hoped that there are at least 30 followers per month.
Checkpoint 4

Fashion show
models x5
designers x3
Shop in Fishtown (8000 square foot)
3D printers x 6

Total: around 400,000 US dollars
Questions for all checkpoints:
Checkpoint 1
Is the concept going to work very well in Fishtown? Is it workable to split the mural art theme into two directions: history and music?
Will we have competitors?
Which logo do you prefer? (Number 1-4) May we ask what color should have for logo?
Checkpoint 2
4. Although we will mainly sell tees, we will provide a DIY space and equipments for individuals to design. We are thinking about merging the DIY space and the display areas, i.e. the equipments and the products are put in the same area. We want to provide some inspiration for the DIY people with our products. However, we are concerned that the shoppers and the DIY people may feel a little bit uncomfortable with others doing totally different things. So the DIY and designer’s area are made of glass and cement walls. Or you think the area and designer’s area should be all made of glass?
Checkpoint 3
5. Do you think our social media’s strategies appropriate and workable?
Checkpoint 4
6. We also include the rent of Fishtown in our budget plan, is it okay? Should we also include decorations in our budget? Should it be higher or lower for our budget? How is the extent? Large or small extent to be higher or lower?
If you have any other suggestion, we are pleased to hear. Please don’t hesitate to tell us feedback.
Thanks :)

10 Ways to Enjoy Your Favorite Drinks Throughout the Day
Hydration is a part of life no matter your beverage of choice, although obviously some are better for us than others. Whatever you choose to partake in, there are ways to make it more enjoyable, whether sipping coffee alone or hosting a cocktail party. To help you out, we sought out ways to enjoy your favorite drinks at home from early morning coffee or tea cups to a water carafe on your bedside table, and everything in between.
Sepia Glass Cup + Teak Saucer by KINTO Perfect for starting the day off with a hot cup of tea, this sepia cup set is made from heat-resistant glass with a teakwood and plywood saucer for a modern twist.
Grid Mug by Recreation Center A fresh perspective right off the pottery wheel, this handmade mug displays a high gloss speckled white grid with raw clay peeking through from behind, and a rubber dipped handle in playful yellow to make mornings brighter.
8.5 oz. HS Stacking Glass – 6 Pack by Toyo Sasaki Glass Perhaps you’re not a coffee or tea drinker and skip right to the juice. If so, these super durable small glass tumblers are perfect for it with their reinforced hard strong (HS) glass made by one of Japan’s leading glass manufacturers.
Radiant Crystal Water Glasses by Puik Design Don’t forget to hydrate! Caffeinated beverages (and alcoholic ones!) can dehydrate you so make sure to keep up with your water drinking, which is much more delightful out of fancy mouth blown crystal glasses like these. Plus, you can also use these glasses for mixed beverages, wine, or whiskey.
Porter Terrazzo 20oz Bottle by W&P Speaking of hydration, you can’t forget about quenching your thirst when you’re on the go, so to-go bottles are essential. This speckled terrazzo bottle features lightweight glass with a protective silicone wrapping to keep it safe while out and about.
Mixed Carafe + Flute Set by Fferrone A bit of a splurge, but one you can use this set for anything, from everyday use to parties. The handmade set includes one retro-inspired carafe and six glasses that would make for excellent afternoons sipping iced tea or lemonade libations.
Kronos Double-Wall Wine Glass by KINTO It’s always 5 o’clock somewhere, right? So you better get prepared for wine time with this double-walled glass that will keep your drink cold without condensation AND it won’t tip over like a stemmed version. Plus, the outer shell has a lip that makes it easy to grip, especially after a glass or two.
Copper Cup by Yield Design If Moscow Mules are your drink of choice, you need a good copper cup to enjoy them in, like these from Yield Design. Made of pure copper, the cups are functional and versatile with insulating and antimicrobial qualities making it an ideal pick.
Monti Birra by Sempli For the beer drinker, this stout glass is designed in such a way that enhances the flavors of different types of beer and boosts their effervescence at the same time.
Short Glass Carafe + Glass Cup by Gary Bodker Designs While these are sold separately, they make a great set for your bedside after a long day for late night thirst and early morning sips. Both are handcrafted out of glass and come in a handful of colors to choose from, including Rose shown here.

JAN MOIR: Surely not another coffee shop clogging up the high street
Someone please make it stop. It was revealed this week that four new coffee shops open in Britain every day, with another 6,500 scheduled to open by 2023.
This effectively means that in four years’ time there will be more than 32,000 coffee shops clogging up UK streets, most of them faceless outposts of the international chains. And you won’t get a halfway decent cup of coffee in most of them.
What seems to be the problem, ma’am? Only that despite their ubiquity, the offerings from the majority of coffee chains veer from the bland and forgettable to the downright bad or unpleasant.
It was revealed this week that four new coffee shops open in Britain every day, with another 6,500 scheduled to open by 2023 – most of which are big chains like Cafe Nero
And please, barista, make sure the water is scalding hot so that it peels the skin off my hand when spilled, thank you kindly. Any chance of a stale blueberry muffin, an inferior sandwich assembled at some far distant central facility, or a factory-made, microwaved croissant that tastes like a buttery floor cloth? Well, don’t mind if I don’t.
I used to buy a coffee on my way to work most mornings, sometimes from a chain, occasionally from a fancy but glum independent which sells cinnamon buns for a fiver and a tiny latte for £3.
‘With not very good latte art,’ someone moaned on a review website recently. As if that were the deal breaker, instead of the adventurous pricing, the double depresso service and the grim coffees that make the whole process such a cheerless, expensive waste of time.
Now I have fresh coffee at home, instant at work and have cut the chains out of my life. Cry freedom from the tyranny of the frappuccino fiends! I might buy myself a small Cessna jet with the money saved.
Yet despite the lack of quality on offer, coffee shops are now everywhere. And, sadly, their unstoppable proliferation — along with vaping shops, tattoo parlours, charity shops and shops that sell covers for your mobile phone — is turning British High Streets into windblown tundras, bereft of the tiniest waft of culture or beauty.
The Starbucks Venti is just a pint of coffee in a charmless mug or a cardboard coffin, Moir writes
And there is still little end in sight to the expansion of chains such as Caffe Nero, Costa, Greggs, Pret A Manger (actually, I love Pret) and Starbucks, to name a few. Obviously, selling 11 grams of coffee and a shot of hot milk for £2 plus is a lucrative business for all involved.
Today, coffee chains are like burger chains, complete with lots of advertising campaigns, central sites and huge rents to pay. In prime positions in every High Street, they are the most visible representation of our changing culture and they continue to boom as pubs go bust. Why? Younger people are drinking less, while Britain’s mix of ethnicities and religions has also had an effect — especially when one considers 56 per cent of non-whites declare themselves teetotal, compared to only 16 per cent of whites.
Beer duty and business rates have also taken their toll on pubs, where demanding customers now want craft beers, silly gins, food and their ghastly children to be admitted.
So coffee has surged into this vacuum, and who could blame it?
I pass eight coffee outlets on my walk to work, including Danish chain Joe & The Juice. What the heck is that all about? Joe seems to be full of silent young people tapping away on phones and laptops.
Bonhomie and conversational skills have been washed away by technology, amid the atmosphere of a trendy morgue.
Their advertising campaign suggests the ideal Joe customer is an attractive Nordic skateboarder with a lizard tattoo. All the better to raise your glass of Sex Me Up juice (please, no) along with your avo wrap and turmeric shots.
Perhaps it’s not them, it’s me? Yet there is still a place in my heart for the good, independent coffee shop. When I first moved to London, how I loved those Italian coffee places with their hissing machines and great walls of sandwiches in glass cabinets, generously stuffed with about three inches of egg mayonnaise or crammed with ham.
In prime positions in every High Street, the chains are expanding exponentially and replacing pubs because younger people are drinking less
In Cornwall, imaginative independents thrive, such as the Honey Pot in Penzance and the Cook Book Cafe in St Just, where the owner makes heavenly sandwiches with bacon from her own pigs.
To walk into any of the Bettys Tea Rooms in Yorkshire is to be assailed with the aromas from another age: fresh baking, savoury toast, roasted coffee beans. And, oh, the civility could make you weep. Tablecloths, milk jugs, sugar tongs, a smile.
There is no comparison between a lovely coffee served in a perfect china cup and saucer at Brasserie Zedel in Central London and a monstrosity such as the Starbucks Venti — over a pint of coffee in a charmless mug or a cardboard coffin.
So, hello darkness my old friend. I’ve come to drink you up again. Although not in a chain, never in a chain, even as they become increasingly hard to avoid.
Don’t shed a tear for evergreen Eva
Eva Green revealed she feels insecure about reaching her 40s next year because acting ‘depends on the desire’ of others
Eva Green is an exquisite beauty. However, at the age of 38, the actress (pictured) is worried about the ageing process.
Eva, a word. Only when one gets older — much, much older — will you truly understand what a perfect age 38 is and how lucky you are to be perched there, on the cliff face of life. Most of the early angst is over, but you are still pre-40 watershed. Make the most of it!
Yet Eva feels insecure about reaching her 40s next year because acting ‘depends on the desire’ of others. ‘Will people still like me?’ she frets.
Possibly not, if you carry on like this, darling.
But let us not mock Eva, for I honestly believe the ageing process is so much harder on the beautiful and the damned.
If you have been used to the warm and appreciative male gaze all your life, it must feel very chilly when it begins to fade.
The gain of feeling no pain
You might not believe this, but there is a woman in Scotland who feels no pain and never complains. No, it’s not me.
Her chemical imbalance means that she is also always in a good mood, which means she is definitely not me and neither is she Lorraine Kelly, who admitted last week in a tax hearing that her super-cheery on-screen persona was fake. (Can I just pause here to mention that Lorraine has also just revealed that she never takes off her bra, not even when she goes to bed, which is even more shocking.)
Jo Cameron is the remarkable woman whose unusual gene mutations stop pain signals reaching her brain. For 71-year-old Jo, childbirth was a breeze; she only needed aspirin for a painful operation; she walked away from a serious car accident, and she munches on scotch bonnet peppers as if they were plums. When she was a little girl, she didn’t even notice she had broken her arm roller-skating.
Jo Cameron (left) has led a virtually pain-free life due to a rare genetic mutation that affects just one in several million
It makes you strong, but it also makes you weak. She had no indication that her hip was crumbling, or that osteoarthritis had pushed a thumb bone into her palm.
Experts believe her condition is only found once in every several million people and she is now helping medical experts explore the parameters of pain management, especially for those who suffer chronic pain after surgery. In a way, I’m glad that she discovered this at a late age — one can only imagine what medical science might have wanted her to do earlier.
What a remarkable story. She has never felt pain in her life, but I bet she still runs screaming from the room when someone mentions Brexit. Or Lorraine’s bra.
Havana truly bizarre time
Has there ever been a more hilarious royal tour than the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall’s recent 12-day jaunt to the Caribbean? Every second was a joy, for us — not them.
The sprightly septuagenarians crammed more than 70 engagements into a schedule that seemed to leave rigid royal protocol behind and had the pair of them shambling around the islands like a couple of crumpled pensioners on a Saga cruise.
Highlights included Charles striding along the sand in his beach brogues, Camilla looking like a discarded sweetie wrapper at his side and about a thousand cheesy photo ops, including one in Cuba where they actually did eat actual cheese.
Prince Charles and Camilla make a mojito on their trip to Havana, Cuba, this week
There were moments when it was more like an episode of Flog It! than a royal visit. The couple tootled around in a classic car, then sat next to a statue of John Lennon, Camilla visibly wilting gently under a parasol. They learned how to make a mojito cocktail (above) and sampled their work. ‘That hit the spot,’ said Camilla, after a long gulp. Charles used a sugar cane treadle, posed with a parrot, got into a boxing ring and looked like he was having the time of his life, even if he was not.
Looking thrilled at municipal events is his superpower. He even met Lionel Richie at the Coral Reef Club Hotel in Barbados and greeted him with a line from one of his hits.
‘Hello,’ said the Prince. ‘It must have been you I was looking for.’
Close, but no Cuban cigar, you dear old thing.
At Reading University, food scientist Dr Stuart Farrimond claims to have discovered the recipe for the perfect toasted cheese sandwich. In his formula, two medium slices of white bread are toasted on both sides, then buttered right to the edges.
Then he adds 50g (1.8oz) of grated medium cheese, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, and places them exactly 18cm (7in) under the grill.
Is he COMPLETELY MAD? Everyone knows that you don’t use butter when making cheese on toast, and that you toast the bread on one side only, then add the cheese.
What kind of savagery is the prof encouraging? Honestly. You simply cannot trust half-boiled eggheads to do anything properly.
Fury from the Madden crowd
Richard Madden fans are troubled. They feel that the actor has been snubbed because he didn’t receive a Bafta nomination for his performance in BBC drama Bodyguard.
Unluckily for Richard Madden, the Bafta nods this year include two of the best male turns in television drama for years, meaning he’ll miss out
His portrayal of protection officer David Budd (pictured) was compelling and one for which he has already won a Golden Globe. But, unluckily for him the Bafta nods this year include two of the best male turns in television drama for years — Hugh Grant as Jeremy Thorpe in A Very British Scandal and Benedict Cumberbatch as Patrick Melrose.
A different class, wouldn’t you say, Sergeant Budd?

Where to Drink Coffee in Seoul’s Hongdae Neighborhood
Located northwest of the Han River, the area around Hongik University (known by the metonym of Hongdae) in Seoul’s Mapo district is home not only to the most renowned arts school in South Korea, but an ever-vibrant and youthful nightlife. Some folks may recognize Hongdae as the backdrop for the famous Korean drama The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the real-life neighborhood is home to a bustling cafe scene. Hongdae’s reputation precedes itself, and depending on the time of your visit, the energy on the streets can be relaxed or animated.
Wandering around during the daytime in the Mapo district on a recent visit to Seoul, I found five distinct cafes providing a range of sensory experiences, from the coffee to the ambience. Whether you’re looking for a place to enjoy music while chatting with friends over an indulgent affogato or a soothing and meditative space to browse through magazines while sipping a mocha, you’d be hard-pressed not to find your next favorite cafe here. Enjoy a great cup of coffee among locals and tourists alike in one of Seoul’s most beloved destinations for all things indie, from arts and music to nightclubs and food.
Coalmine
Coalmine Coffee has a coziness that was especially welcome when I dropped by on a blustery cold December morning. Even walking into the cafe feels like going to see a friend; you go through a gate and a small courtyard to enter the warm and inviting space, cozily lit by glowing lamps strung on the pale, wood-paneled ceiling and scattered over the tables. I can imagine the benches and seating outside would be wonderful during the warmer months. However, it was a chilly winter day and I sipped my delicious espresso con panna indoors.
Coalmine serves single origins or blends in their espresso drinks, single-origin brewed coffee, cold brew, teas, and cakes (including a rotating monthly cake). I appreciated being able to choose between two blends for my espresso con panna: option A was a medium light roast with “floral, fruit, and silky textured” notes, while option B was medium dark with “classic, nutty, and dark chocolate” flavors. The counter was staffed by a friendly but unobtrusive barista who obligingly made recommendations when requested. As demonstrated by the different customers in the cafe, Coalmine is an equally great space for quietly working, reading a book, or mingling with friends.
Coalmine Coffee is located at 43, Jandari-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
Conquer Coffee Lab
Although Conquer Coffee Lab just opened in July, Lee Chang Mi (one half of the married duo who owns the cafe) has worked in the coffee business since 2004. Conquer serves espresso drinks, hand drip coffees, teas, and desserts. Lee’s passion for coffee was evident when I chatted with her over the counter as she explained the different coffee options, with selections from South America (Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala) and Africa (Ethiopia and Kenya).
When asked about the coffee tastes of Conquer’s clientele, Lee said that most of her Korean customers prefer dark roasts, while she herself is a fan of the third wave. On Lee’s recommendation, I ordered a cup of the Ethiopia Kochere coffee that was fresh and lightly acidic. Lee is keen to expand her coffee expertise and share the knowledge with customers. It should be interesting to see how Conquer develops as the owners become more established in the space.
Conquer Coffee Lab is located at 1F 28, Dongmak-ro 8-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul.
Felt
I nearly walked past Felt and had to double check I was in the right location before I realized the sparely appointed storefront was the cafe I was searching. Minimally decorated with records and a stereo system, Felt has the feel of a beloved music store. The seating is made up of long benches pushed against the floor-to-ceiling windows instead of traditional tables and chairs. The drink menu is as carefully edited as the space, offering six drink choices plus an affogato option, and is priced fairly (ranging from ₩4,000 to ₩6,000, roughly $3.75 to $6). The barista mentioned that Felt roasts its own beans, and bags of coffee ranging from ₩10,000 to ₩16,000 ($10 to $15) from Brazil, Costa Rica, and El Salvador are available for purchase. During my visit, I enjoyed sipping a well-balanced latte while leaning against the windows, relaxing, and soaking up the bright sunshine beaming through the glass.
Felt Coffee is located at 2-47, Changjeon-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Silhouette Coffee
While it’s been merely six months since Silhouette Coffee opened its doors, the cafe already has a striking presence. After being greeted at the door by owner Choi Gil Soo’s adorable dog, I asked about the cafe name. Pointing to the full-length white curtains enveloping the large windows, Choi explains how he was inspired by the beauty of the view of the silhouettes of people and things against those curtains from the outside in. Choi roasts his beans in-house, and the menu is varied, from standard espresso drinks, brewed coffee (hand drip, siphon, or French press), flavored milks, juices, teas, and even beers from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and the US. The doppio I ordered immediately flooded my veins with caffeine, but I could also imagine lingering longer over any of the other drinks while lounging on one of the cushioned seats.
Silhouette Coffee is located at 33-5, Dongmak-ro 8-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Follow them on Instagram.
Zombie Coffee Roasters
As an avowed coffee addict, I admit that I feel like a zombie before that first blessed cup of coffee. Situated on a scruffy side street, Zombie roasts its coffee on the premises and offers drinks and beans for sale (₩10,000 to ₩17,000). Like its coffee, Zombie’s interior is on the darker side with brick, black and white walls, and concrete floors. I glanced at the menu, which has espresso drinks, brewed coffee, fruit drinks, shakes, and teas, before opting for a deliciously creamy cappuccino. The other customers were a mix of folks bent over their laptops on the tables toward the back of the cafe, or people sitting on the stools around longer communal tables while chatting and relishing their coffee break. Since it was winter, the outdoor seating wasn’t available, but I can imagine that it would be pleasant to enjoy some Zombie outside during the warmer months.
Zombie Coffee Roasters is located at 6-5, Wausan-ro 19-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

There’s a lot to buy on the path to preparedness and self-sufficiency, and garden supplies are no different. Happily, there are a few things that can be had for free or very inexpensively that can make a big impact on garden costs. Here’s a handful we can get as we drive around during our normal daily lives.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/174ee2bc8a4528274383ff4d3539809b/56f426e9d466bf17-4a/s250x250_c1/de31390c598598971a326b9ba9aaaa4122970df7.jpg)

Tea & Coffee Grounds – Freebie – I won’t belabor this one; it’s on every garden tip list. Nutrients, moisture retention and drainage, aeration – they’re enormous garden boosts, and can be added right to the top of soil or mulch, or can be tilled in.
I mention them because hotels that provide coffee in a lobby are almost never on the lists with coffee shops and McD’s. They can be really excellent places to source a fair number of grounds early in the day as we head to work and the other places are too swamped to hook us up.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/088388467f49a5be11d1d1bf39af714b/56f426e9d466bf17-df/s400x600/b7f82e750103ce28d631364e49d1c95ab554db4b.jpg)
Citrus – Freebie/Cheapie – If you’re using lemons or limes or nom-noming oranges or grapefruit, stick the peels in the freezer. We can also dehydrate the fruit or peels, and store them in canning jars or Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers.
When aphids show up, brew a tea (1 part citrus peels and juiced wedges to 3 parts water, 15-20 minutes simmer, let cool, strain) and spray it on the plants and buggaboos, making sure to hit the undersides of leaves and all the nooks and crannies. It won’t harm the plants, but it will wipe out the aphids.
If you know somebody who works at a bar or a restaurant, and you’re not afraid of people germs, they can be an additional source for citrus wedges and rinds.

Cardboard – Freebie – Cardboard has a number of applications in our lives, from doing a cover-expose-repeat kill on lawns to make it easier to break ground for a garden, to creating weed exclusions at the bottom of beds or on the surface. We can also make patches and light blocks for windows out of it, use it as a table cover for messy tasks (it won’t stick and lift the way paper towel and newspapers will) and rip it up to add to compost or till into soil as a moisture sink before we bed down the garden.
Thick, large boxes are readily available from moving companies (they dispose of boxes after they unpack people) and from new-appliance sellers. Smaller, sturdy boxes ideal for smaller spaces (or stashing goodies) can be had from liquor stores and alcohol-wine merchandisers. The green-sign dollar stores are also a good source, with few of their merchandisers retaining their boxes the way supermarkets do, and no contracts for recycling the way Walmart has.

Curbside Pickups – Freebie/Cheapie – There are numerous sites that allow people to list free items. We can also hit condos and apartments a day or two after phone books are delivered (very few people take them, so snag 1-3 out of each big stack) and contact local handyman and contractors who do windows to grab up some mesh for pest exclusions and shade for cold crops, and glass for cold frames.
Also check out yard sale listings. After the sales, there are regularly piles of things added to the trash pickup, or, you can hit up the owners toward the end or just after “closing” on the last day. They’re regularly willing to make deals at that point.
While it’s a way to get all kinds of things for preparedness, as you drive past, keep the garden in mind.
Laundry bags, sheer curtains, and afghans can create exclusions for pesky moths and caterpillars, and some will limit or prevent squash bugs. Shelving units, dressers and drawers, cracked or lidless totes, and filing cabinets and drawers are all potential planters and water collection. Dark fabrics can be used to help warm soil. Bedframes, shelves, chairs, table legs, and headboards become trellis frames, posts or fencing for beds, and racks to vertically stack water catchment systems.

Spent Hops – Freebie – Hops is like coffee grounds for beer brewers; they get rid of it after it leaches its goodness into the lovely nectar of the gods. Their waste is our gain. Hops can be tilled in just as they come from the brewer, usually not more than a cup per square yard. Hops are acidic (pH 4.8), which makes it a great amendment for most veggies and soft fruits, and can help counter the alkaline conditions that come from extended wood mulch gardening techniques.
As an additive, hops also has the advantage of being a moisture sink, just like hair, hides, and coffee grounds. It can serve the same purpose as a mulch, increasing the moisture that stays available to plants longer than any of the other common mulches.
Forums to track down a nearby home brewer and local micro-breweries are the most likely sources for most of us.
There is one sad note: Hops smell like a bar floor with cheap lemon cleaner undertones. It’s not something I’d stick around windows or under the hammock, but it doesn’t bother me out in the gardens and orchards.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3370ed0474aa6db040b019364ba3d159/56f426e9d466bf17-be/s400x600/229c11cf197741c222cf9647aea44807e313537a.jpg)
Pine – Freebie or Cheapie – Pine needles/straw is another mulch that can help lower pH or maintain the acidic pH in our gardens. If we want to make separating mulch covers easier or mix it into a chip-mulch bed, we might want to run over it with a mower to make smaller lengths and separate the needles from the fascicle sheath (the woody tube bit that holds groups of needles together).
Small-chip pine bark mulch can give us the same acidity-raising benefits, and like pine straw, can be used as our sole mulch or can be mixed into other wood-chip mulches or clipped grass mulch.
Pine straw can usually be had for free, although we may have to drive around to find it. Try to find it from yards and private property, not parks. We can buy it if we really want to, in which case it should already be trimmed and it should be totally weed free.

Glean fields – Freebie – Farm fields are rarely harvested “clean” – there’s usually leftovers. There are also imperfect fruits that are left in place by hand-pickers or piled up in on-the-farm sorting areas. Farmers also sometimes abandon a crop for various reasons.
While some of them are restricted due to liabilities, many will let you come out and pick over fields. We usually have to make those contacts ahead of time, and may be best served asking if the farmer wants us to call and remind them at harvest time, but sometimes we can see harvesting taking place as we drive around, and can just make contact then.
While it’s usually going to be a hybrid, sometimes we can find OP seed doing so. Most of the time, though, all we’re doing is either boosting our own produce or collecting some animal feed.

Junior College Starts – Freebie – Find out who teaches the local horticulture and botany classes, look up when the semesters end, and tag the instructors to find out if there are any leftover veggie starts or fruit or rose cuttings a week or two out. Sometimes (regularly) students don’t take them all at the end of class. A lot of us are happy to give them away if you’re swinging by.
Another excellent resource is the aquaculture instructor(s). Most will either shut down or severely cut down on population for at least one of the summer semesters, and some restart the systems 2-3 times a year for different fish. The water and the fish grunge left over at the end of the semester or year is an excellent garden additive, and I haven’t run into one yet that won’t let me fill a few buckets. Look at me like I’m crazy, but let me have my buckets.
Skip-It’s
There are a ton of freebie-cheapie “fixes” for the garden. Some work. Some … don’t. Here’s a few I’m not a huge fan of.
– Baking Soda-Vinegar pH test – If your soil has a serious reaction to either of these, you have a major problem. While some veggies and fruits like it significantly acidic or alkaline, most actually like it in between 5.8 and 7.0. Baking soda and vinegar don’t react much in near-neutral conditions, so all you’re going to know is that you’re near-neutral, or have a few bubbles that tell you a little acidic or a little alkaline. Those bubbles might also be coming from tap water, contaminants on tools, and soap residue left in containers.
Nab some pink-blue litmus strips at $3-$10/100 instead.
They give you the same acid-alkaline readings, and with many, you can learn to estimate the pH range by how quickly and strongly they change color. You can also use them to test the acidity of foods before canning to make sure it’s safe to water bath (many of our foods that were formerly WBC’d have lost acidity along the way).

– Hair as pest deterrents – Hair is full of nitrogen and micronutrients, so it’s not a waste to toss those shavings and trimmings in the garden directly or into compost, but I’ve yet to see it actually repel rodents or deer. Peeing has its proponents as well, and you can buy zoo/carnivore poo, but those (and things like Zest, Irish Spring, citrus peels, hot pepper sauce and powder, and most others) have to be reapplied and may not work.
It’s not free, but the solar-run predator eyes, garden terriers doing the jobs they were originally intended for, owl nesting, and things like double-fenced chicken runs are far, far more effective in the long run. Diggers really just require predators and traps, or buried fencing.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2f33e9ceab661f6738aa6c18e653719a/56f426e9d466bf17-d9/s400x600/6171d4bfc0216801c51aa05836083a3d2b8c8136.jpg)
– Eggshells as slug barriers – Save the eggshells (and beet tops – they accumulate calcium) for planting with your tomatoes to prevent blossom end rot. You need sharp fragments that form a solid wall at least an inch thick and an inch tall for slugs. Even so, the eggshells will develop a film that allows slugs to crawl over them later.
Instead, try a barrier of Epsom salt or cornmeal (both need replaced frequently), or ripped soda can collars (be careful – it’s the sharp edges that deter the slugs). Beer wells work, but beer is precious. Brewer’s mash in water also attracts and then drowns them.
You can also lay out boards. They’ll hide under them as day breaks, then you can carry the board to birds (or the trash can or choice of death) and over time your slug and snail population will drop enough to no longer be an issue.

Garden Drive-By’s
There are many similar free or low-cost items we can pick up as we drive around to boost our gardens – and fallacies that people waste precious time on.
There are things like buckets and gallon+ condiment containers we can source from supermarkets, caterers, and restaurants, we can go dumpster diving for produce at some restaurants and groceries, but the days of having them hand us blemished produce are largely over, even for livestock. We can usually source materials to make toad, owl, swallow and bat houses to lower our insect loads, and we can dip up buckets of pond scum and algae (it’s a super boost to compost and garden soil), but I’ve yet to find a store, homeowner, restaurant or school that will give me their out-of-date milk to boost calcium in the soil.
Those lists could go on forever. Hopefully these introduce some less-known resources we can snag for our gardens as we drive around, or will save us from wasting time on some of the freebie-cheapie tips that get passed around so often.

An Eater’s Guide to Miami
While the DJs playing in a restaurant used to get more attention than than the chefs cooking there, Miami’s culinary scene has finally shifted. The focus now is on flavor, not flash. Today’s Miami culinary landscape reflects that, with locals stepping up their game and pouring their diverse backgrounds into the meals they prepare. Use this guide to find the places that matter the most in Miami.
Table Of Contents (all h2’s added automatically)
Welcome to the Melting Pot
It’s hard to deny the Latin American and Caribbean influences found throughout the city. Cuban flavors reign supreme, but influences from all over are making their presences known in the best of ways. Think delicacies from everywhere from South America to the islands of Haiti and Puerto Rico. The flavor combinations are as refreshing and as vibrant as the city itself.
For a quick Miami culinary snapshot, don’t miss the stone crabs (and sides) at Joe’s Stone Crab, a frita at El Rey de las Fritas, any of the breads or baked goods at Zak the Baker, croquetas from Islas Canarias, and a milkshake from Robert is Here.
Where to Start on Eater Miami’s Best Maps
There is a cornucopia of maps on Eater Miami, detailing everywhere to eat and drink in the Magic City. The heatmaps, happy hour guides, and brunch maps are updated every month since something new is always happening here. Below are the top destinations on the site’s most popular maps to help time-starved eaters prioritize which spots to visit.
Hot Restaurant: New York’s buzziest new import, Upland Miami, is proving it is worth the hype, while the newcomers in the SLS Brickell including José Andrés’ stunning Bazaar Mar and Michael Schwartz’s rustic Italian eatery Fi’lia are certainly having a moment in the proverbial sun, while the team behind Zuma struck gold once again with French import La Petite Maison. For a full breakdown of Miami’s hottest restaurants, updated monthly, check out the Eater Miami Heatmap.
Essential Restaurant: No restaurant on the Eater 38, which is updated quarterly, should disappoint, but when trying to narrow the list, some suggestions: the chic cuisine at Brad Kilgore’s Alter is arguably Miami’s most buzzed about restaurant ever. Of course, head to Joe’s Stone Crab for an iconic, Miami meal (or try Joe’s Take Away next door if pressed for time).
Stone crabs [Photo Credit: Joe’s Stone Crab]
Bar: The bar that put Miami’s cocktail culture on the map, Broken Shaker, is a great place to start on the Essential Bars map. But don’t miss bevy of Hot New Bars and Restaurant Bars are that are worth visiting for a libation (or six). Oh and happy hour? Eater has that covered too with our standbys and best new happy hours to check out.
Brunch: Miami’s all about the brunch life. Head to the The Biltmore Hotel for its epic Sunday spread with a side of throwback Miami, or for something a bit more laidback, Eating House’s weekend brunch, with Cap’n Crunch pancakes and Tang mimosas, gives a fun spin on the meal.
Iconic: Miami embraces nostalgia, and the city’s 25 most iconic dishes are iconic for a reason. Longstanding classics are still some of the best places in the city fish sandwich pros La Camaronera, old school Cuban diner Rio Cristal, and barbecue staple, Shorty’s.
Waterfront: Let’s face it: Miami’s got some killer views and plenty of restaurants in this city have them as well. Smith & Wollensky, the Standard Hotel’s Lido Restaurant and Rusty Pelican have most beat.
Pizza: Mister O1 and Lucali are the standouts on the pizza map. For a quick bite with a lot of flavor, Casola’s, Frankie’s and Steve’s Pizza serve up delicious, classic pies that will satisfy any pizza craving.
Beer: Miami’s beer scene is on the rise, and there are many spots on the brewery map worth visiting. To get a proper tour, head to Wynwood Brewing Co. and try brews from the guys that started it all down here, then walk the neighborhood and check out Star Wars-themed J. Wakefield and Concrete Beach Brewing.
Miami Neighborhoods To Know
Miami’s so much more than the beach nowadays. And while the beach is still worth a culinary visit, neighborhoods off the beach and into the mainland having been booming with delicious activity.

Wynwood:
This unique artsy neighborhood is on everyone’s radar. While exploring the graffiti-filled walls grab a juice at the Beyonce approved JugoFresh, a freshly made pastry at Zak the Baker, a cup of coffee at Panther Coffee, a Cuban sandwich at Enriqueta’s Sandwich Shop, a slice of pie at Fireman Derek’s and then get in the inevitable (but well worth it) line for a doughnut at Salty Donut. For a full-fledged meal, Asian-barbecue hybrid, KYU, is the place to be — or try to snag a table at Wynwood’s restaurant king, Alter, or the newly opened Wynwood location of Cake Thai. Wynwood Yard is the place for the indecisive, housing a variety of food trucks ranging from shaven ice cream to poke bowls, with live entertainment and drinks on hand during the weekends. But the area really comes alive at night, with bars aplenty staying open until the wee hours. Start your evening off at laid-back hangout Gramps, before grabbing a beer in the sea of hipsters at Wood Tavern, then finish the night with an after-hours mezcal shot at Coyo’s back bar. Stay up-to-date on all the latest Wynwood hot spots here.

Sunset Harbour:
After falling prey to the tourism gods in the 2000s, Miami Beach has pockets of new areas that were created with both locals and tourists alike. Sunset Harbour started the locals-friendly trend thanks to the team behind Pubbelly, which debuted its popular namesake gastropub in 2010, and later expanded its talents to the whole block with Spanish tapas eatery Barceloneta and sushi mash-up Pubbelly Sushi. Around the corner is NYC import Lucali, whose Miami pies are just as good as its Big Apple counterpart’s, while hot spot NaiYaRa turns out high-end Thai street food fare with a side of celebrity sightings. Sunset Harbour also serves as a breakfast hub as well with True Loaf Bakery, Panther Coffee and Icebox Cafe, featuring Oprah loved cakes, all solid choices in the neighborhood.

South Beach:
Yes, there are tourist traps aplenty in the neighborhood that started it all. Do yourself a favor and avoid eateries on Ocean Drive, which will charge you about double for mediocre food and sugary drinks. Instead, locally-owned and operated restaurants are the way to go. For a quick bite, taco pros Taquiza and sandwich masters La Sandwicherie won’t disappoint, and stay open well into the night. For a sit-down experience, pasta kings Macchialina, chic Greek eatery Milos and comfort food mecca Yardbird are solid bets. If wandering South of Fifth and wary of the wait at Joe’s Stone Crab, New England style eatery Izzy’s, or laid-back ceviche shack My Ceviche will satisfy a craving for stone crabs.

Coconut Grove:
This is probably Miami’s fastest growing culinary neighborhood. For years, the area was overrun with chain restaurants, but the tides have turned with plenty of local restauranteurs popping up all over the ‘hood. Local (relative) newcomers include Giorgio Rapicavoli’s Glass & Vine, modern-American with a Latin twist spot Ariete, and Michael Schwartz’s Harry’s Pizzeria. But plenty of tried-and-true staples remain like brunch go-to Greenstreet Café, intimate French brasserie Le Bouchon du Grove and perfect lunch spot Jaguar Ceviche. If in a rush, go for the al pastor tacos at El Taquito or the red curry at Asian Thai Kitchen, which is hidden inside a local Kwik Stop. And don’t forget to grab a waterfront drink at Monty’s or Grove Bar Grill (formerly known as Scotty’s Landing), both equipped with awesome marina views. You can find a comprehensive guide here.

Little Havana:
This is the epicenter of Cuban cuisine in Miami, and where a lot of Miami-adopted specialties can be found. The most famous Cuban eatery is Versailles, with a Cuban sandwich that is still one of the best in town. It’s easy to spend a day eating and drinking a path through the area. Start with a frita at El Rey, then grab a mojitio at the legendary Ball & Chain, tongue tacos at Viva Mexico, and finish on a sweet note at Azucar Ice Cream with a cup of its famous Abuela Maria ice cream and a night cap at nautical themed, craft cocktail bar, Bar Nancy.

Downtown Miami/Brickell:
In the land of banks and steakhouses, there are still plenty of unique meals to be had. For those enjoying an expense account dinner, perpetual sushi hot spot Zuma, Peruvian meccas La Mar and Coya, and modern-day steak house Edge Steak & Bar will impress the bosses. For a more low-key option, get a well-made espresso drink at All Day, the spicy bucatini at Fooq’s, or the gazpacho at modern Spanish eatery NIU. Finish the day off with a drink at popular rooftop hangouts Pawn Broker or Sugar followed by a late-night drink at The Corner Bar or Floyd Miami, which never seem to close.

Coral Gables
Consider this area classic Miami. Plenty of locals love to eat and drink in the City Beautiful. For breakfast, Australian-inspired Threefold Café is the spot to go. Lunch is a toss-up between a toston burger at Pincho Factory or the fish and chips at Seven Dials. For a night on the town, start with a glass of wine chosen by the sommelier at the city’s best wine bar, Uvaggio, followed by a meal featuring an upscale mash up of Caribbean flavors at Ortanique on the Mile. For a more low-key meal, try the always buzzed about Eating House, serving inventive, eclectic eats, and The Local Craft Food & Drink. The down home comfort food and fried chicken there show that Miami still has some Southern roots. For a comprehensive guide to dining in the Gables, visit here.
Miami Glossary of Terms
Frita:
[Pastelitos from Vicky Bakery]
A Cuban-style burger made with a thin, very seasoned pork and beef patty, topped with shoestring potatoes, diced onions and ketchup and nestled inside a Cuban roll. Debates rage on where to find them but these are your five best bets.
Croqueta:
While the term is used liberally nowadays, traditional croquetas are filled with diced ham and béchamel and devoured around breakfast time. Eat them like a local on top of a saltine cracker with a squirt of lime juice. Here are 11 spots to find traditional and untraditional varieties.
Pastelito:
Known in other parts of the country as a turnover, these flakey pastries are usually found in Miami filled with guava and cheese. Find the nine must-try versions here.
Cortadito:
A Cuban espresso made with roasted coffee and a sugary, creamy concoction poured in.
Arepa:
A Venezuelan import, this hand-held item features a corn-based bread that can be filled with just about anything, though meats and cheeses are preferred. Best eaten late at night after bar hopping, so make sure to keep this guide handy.
Do I have to try a Cuban sandwich?
Cuban Sandwich from Las Olas Cafe [Photo: Official]
Well, it’s really up to you. The signature sandwich down here in South Florida can be found all over town, while riffs on the traditional flavors can be also seen throughout Miami — think Cuban egg rolls, Cuban sandwich inspired pizzas and so on. It’s a good, affordable meal that you can get just about any time of day and in any part of the city. So to sum up…why not?
Stone Crabs:
The beloved jewel of the sea here in South Florida, these savory crustaceans are only available from October 15 to May 15 of each year. Best served cold with plenty of mustard sauce for dipping.
Homestead:
A region of south Miami-Dade county, this area is where most of Miami’s farms reside and where most of city’s local produce is grown — and some of the best milkshakes are made.
Cubano:
A Cuban sandwich, which is a local spin on a ham and cheese made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and pressed inside Cuban bread. And don’t you dare suggest to put salami on it — that’s Tampa’s shtick.
Mamey:
A local fruit that is similar in size to a melon and has a unique flavor that can best be described as a very sweet baked sweet potato. It’s extra tasty in milkshake form.
Medianoche:
The sister sandwich to the Cubano, it’s also filled with pork, ham, mustard, Swiss cheese, and dill pickles, but housed on a much sweeter, egg-based bread.
Pubbelly Boys:
The team that helped bring gastropub fare to Miami. It all started with Pubbelly and they’ve expanded their empire with multiple locations of Pubbelly Sushi, plus eateries PB Station and Barceloneta.
Michael Schwartz:
Miami’s most popular food personality and widely credited for bringing the farm-to-table movement to South Florida, he is involved in half a dozen restaurants (and counting) with his flagship Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink still going strong in the Miami Design District 10 years after its opening.
Bar Lab:
The team behind The Broken Shaker, The Anderson, and half of Miami’s cocktail menus. They helped grow Miami’s drink scene from laughable to internationally-recognized in a matter of a few years.

Alter, KYU, Bazaar Mar, NAOE, Prime 112, La Petite Maison, Pao by Paul Qui and Eating House (for weekend brunch). But, unlike other major metropolitan cities, Miami is very much a last minute town — meaning with even some light planning ahead you’re likely to score a restaurant reservation anywhere you desire.
