I’ve accidentally made a Smiling Friends next gen lol

What started out as a joke “what-if” character got me attached, so now meet Dorothy “Dottie” Dompler! The daughter of Charlie and Zoey, she was conceived by accident, but Charlie’s Catholic values made him feel obligated to step up and do his best as a father. Much like her dad, Dottie doesn’t smile a whole lot…if ever. She’s not cynical or annoyed or anything unlike Charlie or Allan, that’s just what her face looks like. She’s perfectly content with her life and just doesn’t feel the need to be super emotive about it. Think of Maud Pie from MLP if you’re familiar with that. Her dad also tends to talk to her like an adult so she grew up not really caring for that “goo goo ga ga” little kid stuff.

Charlie still works with the Smiling Friends so Dottie has a big circle of people to care for her! Charlie, Zoey, Pim, Marge, Glep, and Mr. Boss too as a fellow father himself (Allan doesn’t like children /hj). Expect doodles of some of these interactions soon! Also expect a Marge x Glep horde and some rowdy little Pimling babies too. I’m getting carried away with this lmao

I always felt a great deal of curiosity for her design and backstory and Kind kindly showed and explained to me some of her lore, and how she came to be as a character in Kindheart's established AU.

Even though I try to keep my Smiling Friends style pretty close to canon, I decided to doodle some of the Dottieverse cast by tracing canon characters to see what they would look like if they were exactly on model

(There are no canon characters I can trace to make Chad “on model” so how I draw him now is how he’d look in the show I guess)

One time Charlie and Pim lost Dottie during one of their Smiling Friends missions and needless to say it was an adventure that made nobody smile

how did Charlie handle being a father in the earlier stages.

For this I’m going to start with before he was a father! It was really rough at first

Dottie was an unplanned pregnancy and Charlie felt completely unprepared leading up to her birth. Before this point he was kind of just taking things a day at a time, doing his job and then whatever he wanted in between, but now he was about to have a new responsibility thrust upon him. Whether or not he wanted to be a father was not something he had really thought about, but now he had to make the decision quickly. Zoey wanted to keep the baby and Charlie knew deep down that he would forever kick himself if he didn’t step up just as much. It wasn’t what his God would want him to do but he also didn’t want to know himself as a coward. Even though the uncertainty of it all was fucking terrifying.

But he wasn’t alone in that feeling.

Of course Zoey, as the one actually carrying the baby, would have feelings about it. She was just as unprepared as Charlie was. I imagine she told Charlie that he didn’t have to stay but secretly hoped he would. He has a mind of his own and doesn’t seem to let anything get in the way of doing what he wants, and she anticipated that he would decide he wasn’t ready just as he sometimes decided his work missions were too much to handle. She would have been so disappointed in him if it came to that but she would have understood.

But he stayed. He didn’t want to be a disappointment for something as big as this. It was different from work and he knew there were times he could have tried harder there as well. And they both found comfort in knowing the other was scared too. Neither of them knew what they were doing but somehow, there was this understanding that they could figure it out as a team. They were in it together, plus they both had friends who they could count on to help. This period of uncertainty brought Charlie and Zoey closer together as it helped them get to know each other on a deeper level than the casual dating situation they had before. The bond they formed then is why Dottie still has two loving and present parents today.

And it was all worth it in the end 💛

“I might actually cry. If I cry, you guys need to look away.”

All of Charlie’s worries melted away once he saw his newborn daughter and realized what it was all worth. What he would have missed if he had let his fear get the better of him. He lived in a stressful and crazy world but one thing that was certain was his duty to this tiny, fragile life he had a part in making. This little critter that he swore to protect and nurture, so help him God. Even when it meant making lifestyle changes.

Charlie made himself cut way back on drinking leading up to Dottie’s birth, but once she was actually here he decided he needed to cut it out altogether. He loved her so much and he didn’t want to even remotely risk letting her see that ugly side of him that everyone else in his life had had to put up with. He couldn’t be a disappointment to Zoey, to his friends, to his God, and especially to Dottie. If he kept up his bad habits he’d be failing himself too. It had to stop.

Other than that, parenting was actually a lot easier than Charlie thought it would be. He had to feed Dottie and change diapers and take care of Zoey postpartum and all of that, which he was very willing to do, but Dottie herself was a very chill baby. She hardly cried at all; her calls for food and attention were just calm vocalizations instead of distressed wails. While she had no problem developing her own interests as she grew, she was (and is) very adaptable to whatever her parents wanted to do which made it easy for them to continue their hobbies

Charlie probably shouldn’t be playing those games in front of a baby lol, but that’s how he is as a parent. He speaks to his daughter (and later other children in his life) like an adult because that’s what all kids will be eventually anyway. He thinks the whole “goo goo ga ga” thing is an insult to their intelligence and especially his own, so he doesn’t bother with that. It did help Dottie be able to express herself clearly very early in life, including to tell Charlie she actually didn’t care for Rust that much. Ouch! But she also had the vocabulary to say she enjoyed spending time with her dad anyway, which makes it all worth it

As we know, Charlie Dompler never dresses up for Halloween. He doesn't see the point when any costume is sure to get you canceled in a decade or so, and he has declined many an invitation to participate in couples' and friend group costumes because of this belief. It kind of sucks to disappoint friends and partners like this, but a guy's gotta stick to his guns. Sorry.

When he's a father, however, it isn't so easy. He doesn't have an issue with his daughter and her friends dressing up on their own, but insists on remaining out of costume himself, not realizing how persistent young children can be. While adults can begrudgingly take no for an answer, a gaggle of little girls will keep begging him every year until they're blue in the face and hold him accountable to the empty promises he made to get them off his case. "Maybe next year"? Well, it's next year, Uncle Charlie! You promised you'd dress up with us eventually! Daughter Dottie really wants you to!

He can't avoid it forever and even pawning dress-up duty off on Mom doesn't work all the time. Eventually he has to bite the bullet and join in on their costumed fun. He could get canceled for it in however many years, but if he doesn't do it he could get canceled for being a shitty dad, and which is worse? But he can't just pick any costume and call it a day, no, he has to join in on their group costume. Even when it makes him feel like the opposite of an alpha male and exposes him for the coward he has been every Halloween up until now. It's all part of stepping up as a father, and Charlie would never back down from that.
