Hong Kong Day 1 - The Peak

This was our first day in Hong Kong during the last few days of Chinese New Year 2024. Flight was not too long, not too short, quite comfortable. Waffles at Plaza Premium Lounge KLIA 2 is good, we love it, our kids love it.

Upon arrival, my aunt Jamie was already waiting for us. We took the bus A11 from Airport to Wan Chai were our Hotel is. Kids enjoyed their first double decker bus experience. We stayed at Dorsett WanChai ( @dorsettwanchaihongkong4658 ) Booked together with our flight tickets. So super comfortable!

First stop upon arrival was The Peak (Victoria Peak aka Mount Austin). We wanted to catch sunset but by the time we wasted some time waiting for bus, sun already set. We took an Uber up. Not as expensive as we thought it would be, around 90 HKD. The view from up there is beautiful, a MUST VISIT in Hong Kong. Coming down is a bit tough because Taxi and Bus stands are full of people. We took Uber again but this time much more expensive, around 160 HKD.

We had dinner near our hotel in a local Hong Kong restaurant. Very very delicious and affordable, but I couldn't read the name in Chinese so I took a video, be sure to check it out. Stay tuned for Hong Kong Day 2 - Disneyland.

In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

Just as Advent is about the coming, my winter garden is about anticipation. I harvest lettuce and arugula for now and flowers in the street side garden. I look to the future.

The first sowing of arugula will soon be supplanted by other winter greens. As soon as I begin to cut arugula I succession sow another small area, keeping arugula always in the garden.

The last of the Dorsett Golden apples became a small apple-cranberry crisp and more applesauce.

Anticipating heirloom Violetto purple artichoke. More anticipated harvests next week.

Artist Statement

My photographic practice has evolved over time but has always been anchored in the central theme of presenting a view of what is both captivating and disquieting.

Whether through subtle, delicate colors and dreamlike compositions or stark monochromatic images, I aim to photograph moments that reveal the complex beauty and darkness of the human experience. 

In my earlier work, Intimate Moments, I sought to offer a portrayal of black individuals, challenging negative stereotypes and capturing the warmth and complexity of family life. This project, in turn, led me to the recent work, Sleepwalking, which draws inspiration from slasher horror films. Here, I aim to translate the visceral thrills of these films into visual form, creating images blurring the line between assumed safety and terror.

My creative process is influenced by a diverse range of artists, including Hitchcock, ’70s and ’80s slasher films, and photographers such as Carrie Mae Weems, Weegee, and Deana Lawson. These influences have shaped my approach to art-making and the techniques and strategies I use to create my images.

Ultimately, my hope is that my work resonates with viewers on a visceral level. Whether photographing abandoned industrial wastelands, capturing intimate family scenes, or juxtaposing idealized depictions with an undercurrent of danger, I aim to create images that offer a glimpse into a world where allure and risk are intertwined.
