The Waterphone: An Unorthodox Musical Instrument
Movie directors (and whales) just love the Waterphone. It's an eerie, surreal-sounding instrument unlike any other, and it looks pretty unusual too. Musician and craftsman Richard Waters invented the instrument in the late 1960s, and after he passed away in 2013, his friend Brooks Hubbard, a welder and fellow musician, took over the manufacturing operation to keep the Waterphone's legacy alive and well. Giant Concrete Feet Installed in Abandoned Berlin Bank
Earlier this year, Spanish artist Mario Mankey installed two huge concrete feet in an abandoned bank in Berlin. The sculpture forms part of a collective exhibition by over 160 artists, who were all invited to make their respective marks on the disused building. The project, entitled “The Haus," was conceived of as an initiative to transform the derelict bank, which is currently slated for demolition, into an ephemeral art gallery — one that won't be recreated when the building is gone. The Jean Ring: How a Simple Design Became a Long-Lived Classic
Sometimes, simple is best. Take the Jean Ring, for instance: it's a twist of metal. That's it. Nonetheless, it has also notched up more than 3 million sales since its debut in 1975. The solid brass twist securely holds your keys on one side and clips onto the belt loop of your jeans or pants on the other. Read more…

Intricate Framework of Zaha Hadid’s Airport Terminal Taking Shape in Beijing
Set to become the world’s largest aviation hub, the new terminal building at Beijing Daxing International Airport by Zaha Hadid Architects is quickly taking shape in China, showing off an intricate skeleton reminiscent of decorative knotwork or lace. The design features five "limbs" that spread out from a central core, each one representing a key element of Chinese culture: silk, porcelain, farmlands, gardens, and tea. Read more…

Victorian Remix: London Home Extended with a Glass Box and Basement Pool
Many of London’s streets are still lined with Victorian-era "terrace houses," which we usually refer to as "townhouses" on this side of the Atlantic. First built using sturdy brick after the Great Fire of London, these homes remained popular for centuries afterward, housing workers in industrial districts well into the 19th century. The larger and more ornate terrace houses were often owned by wealthy people and included spacious courtyard gardens, but like most Victorian architecture, they tended to be dark and constrained inside, featuring small rooms that don’t translate well to 21st century lifestyles. Graduate Designs System that Allows People to Cycle Up Buildings
A graduate from the Innovation Design Engineering masters program at London's Royal College of Art has recently designed a bicycle that allows users to vertically scale buildings. Elena Larriba, a Spanish architect and designer based in London, created "Vycle" to promote “urban vertical movement." She came up with the concept based on some of the changes she observed in the city, which has slowly gone from a low-rise, low-density urban grain to a high-rise, high-density metropolis. Read more…

Modern Greece: Summer Villa in Corfu Updates Ancient Style with Minimalist Flair
What makes the architectural vernacular of Greece so unique and evocative? All of those curving corners, whitewashed surfaces, and vivid blue floors give its islands a dreamy vibe that's perfectly offset by the glittering seas around them. Of course, there’s a practical reason for all that white pigment, too: reflecting the harsh sunlight to keep the buildings cool. Read more…
