Ohhh I just noticed this but the quiet “don’t give up” you hear after that gets pretty close to that. Mark said in the explanation stream that it was Dorene’s voice, so we can assume that she gave us a hint there about the things to come (and that Engineer Mark had no way of knowing yet).

Speaking of ISWM actually, while i know that Mark confirmed that the cutoff to engineer Mark saying "whatever you do, dont-" was just a joke and there was no warning but it wouldve been genius if the warning was "whatever you do, dont let go"

Here are my thoughts on Actor Mark in ISWM. I’ve seen a lot of discussion about Head Engineer Mark and whether that’s actually him and if he’s genuine and in which scene you can see behind his facade, and I mean yes, obviously he’s there in the meta scene of part 1 and I’m not saying that there is no connection between him and the head engineer...

...BUT what I believe is that these parts are more like traces on the character than “the true self showing through the cracks”. Mostly because he’s not the hero in his own story.

We’ve gotten to know the Actor as a narcissist who’s obsessed with the idea that he’s the hero. The leading role in his own stories. And both AHWM and ISWM start out with him posing in the spotlight, us just trailing behind him like a sidekick. But that quickly changes.

He gets dirty, he faceplants, he gets tossed around like a ragdoll or punched through brick walls, he’s whiny and scared and he’d definitely rather stay out of danger than play the hero.

He basically becomes the adorkable sidekick of the story. I really don’t think it adds up with what we know about the Actor.

So what I believe is: Assuming that the Actor is still behind all of this, the stories and characters do start out as his own, but then quickly get away from him. He probably believes that he is in control in “his world”, but he never really was - it has its own mind and his story never really turns out the way he intended. It takes its own course with us as the protagonist.

And the character he plays? Well, Head Engineer Mark wouldn’t exist without him because yeah, it’s a role he plays. But what if as soon as those roles come to life, they become their own separate being. What if a character in a story becomes self-aware and doesn’t even know they were made up or played by someone else. And yes, they will still have some traits of that person, but that doesn’t mean they’re the same individual. They become something on their own and experience further character growth the longer they are around (and Head Engineer Mark has been around for a LONG time by the end of ISWM).

And if we assume that the theory about Dorene being Celine holds any water, the way she interacts with the head engineer only proves this. The last time Celine and the Actor met, she didn’t even hesitate to throw an axe into his chest.

She doesn’t react like that with the head engineer.

Unless those cookies were laced with arsenic, she is just polite and friendly towards him. Only when she needs to remind Mark for the second time that she is no longer married she gets a little harsh for a moment. And when she tries to jog our memory during the third time we summoned her, she just ignores him. He’s just not that important.

Because he’s not the Mark she’s after. There is no mask she could tear off him to reveal the Actor. It’s head engineer Mark and he’s probably not even that important from her point of view.

Edit: I originally wrote this post before the explanation stream and now after it I’m sticking to this concept of a role turning into an individual after its ��creation” more than ever. The beauty of it is that we can have the Actor still be a defining factor in the grand total of it, but also just take the story for what it is (which I strongly believe is what Mark wants us to do above all).

ISWM - NEW DORENE WHITACARE INFO

Yall know how her beauty mark (a star) changes place throughout ISWM?

Turns out -according to the makeup artist of ISWM- that it was intentional! BUT it was a joke, a reference to Robin Hood: Men in tights, where one of the characters' moles moves around from scene to scene.

HOWEVER, she also confirmed that theres Lore surrounding Dorene that shes probably not allowed to discuss!

(Since shes the makeup artist, I personally believe those might be related as to why only Dorene and Celci have blue eyebrows, or similar makeup- so I think this helps the idea that we're headed well with our theories!!)

Can we talk about Celci’s description on the USA website? 

“Appears to be made of ice. Two sets of eyes. Both for science. Secondary personality around Mark.” 

Many of us have been theorizing about the connections between Celci, Ms. Whitacare, and Celine. We can all thank this sticky note for that (among other reasons lol)

I just think it’s interesting that this description alludes to doubles so often. “Two sets of eyes” “Secondary personality around Mark” honorable mention to the word “both” lol 

Does this really tell us anything? No, but it does continue to point towards the duality of the situation between Celci and Ms. Whitacare. Celci looks like Celine (obviously being played by Pam), while Ms. Whitacare appears to have many connections to Celine as well (style, power, general vibes). 

Something is going on here. 

The line “Appears to be made of ice” is also interesting. Ice/cryogenics is Celci’s whole thing, and it’s also a comment on how she often acts coldly towards Mark. But this could also potentially allude to Celci being something of smokescreen. We see Celine’s face and immediately alarm bells go off in our heads: that’s Celine! But could this be a misdirection? Could she metaphorically be “made of ice” aka not really what we’re looking for, not the real deal? cough maybe because Ms. Whitacare is Celine?

Who is sus? Is Celci an imposter? Among us? 

I don’t know. I kind of lost my steam at the end. I just wanted to point out all the “double” talk in her description because I found it interesting. Do with it what you will!

So I've seen some people trying to see if Ms. Whitacre's name is some sort of anagram but maybe we also have to consider Dr. Kelvina's? Since there seems to be a connection after all

It's probably just a spelling error but Dorene is spelled two different ways

And Pam said on twitter...

Though her name may just be a pun and unrelated to this at all, who knows but it's something to consider.

So if we use full names we have to unscramble

Maybe the misspellings are hints? I'm not sure I don't know much about codes.

We can safely assume that Dorene Whitacare is Celci, or most precisely Celine.

(a late theory because i was 2 busy to post this sooner, i hope you enjoy and maybe even see my reasoning, let's go!)

I could only notice this when in the Let Go ending of ISWM 2 (the one that loops us back to the beginning of part 1) Dorene sits with us for a moment and she talks to us.

I never noticed this in ISWM 1, because of lighting or just because of not looking too closely but two striking characteristics of Celci's face: she's wearing blue eyeliner and her eyebrows are blue. Also her colour scheme is white and cyan, which we see throughout the whole show is basically the colour of anything that has to do with the Warp Crystal and The Void.

Enter Let Go, one of the two choices we're left with at the end of ISWM 2.

Ms. Whitacare offers us a mug and when we sit with her, we can finally closely see her face.

In the brief moment she remisces of Damien, almost calling him her brother, stumbling with her words then correcting her phrasing "Well, it's like my--", her face scrunches in grief and a sad smile, almost dismissing the thought as if silly, and continues ".. like an old friend used to say: Life is ours to choose."

And it's not just me throwing dices and hoping we get a good number, it's perfectly hidden in plain sight that there's a connection between Celci and Dorene.

Little notes in Noir Mark's locker, especially this one that reads "Dorine? Celci? Connection?" ↓

We see her name listed on the Colonists logs that reads "Dorene L. Whitacare" ↓

The captions when Mark refers to her as Miss Whitacre, immediately after she corrects him saying that she's not married anymore the first time we choose Wake Up Crew after we Put Out The Fire. ↓

Again the captions the third time we choose Wake Up Crew after we Put Out The Fire. This time Mark refers to her as Mrs. and she promptly and quite sharply corrects him saying "I told you I'm not married anymore". ↓

Now I think everyone has noticed the continuous back and forth on how to spell her names.

We see her first name spelled as Dorine and Dorene, her last name spelled Whitacre and Whitacare.

It's like she's not quite grounded like everyone else in the story, she shouldn't even be interacting directly with us since she's listed as a Colonist, meaning she should be in cryo-sleep with all the 100 thousand others in their own section of the ship.

But she's out and about, and while she mentions being asleep in a cryo-pod you should remember that everyone on the ship has been at one point.

This is surface level info, we know she's not a simple colonist, it's like she has written herself into the adventure, giving herself a role and nudging us toward the best choices to keep everyone alive.

When we deviate from the story, defying the Narrator's attempts to move us forwards to Part 2, we die and wake up again in the Void, she gives us a choice (which seems we can again defy, but can we really? No) and sends us on our way.

Only a few people are able to really have control over the Upside Down, first of all (Actor)Mark, then Wilford in is own unruly way, Dark and... Celine.

Backtracking to talking about how Ms. Whitacare's names are spelled, the only times we see her name go from Dorene to Dorine is in Mark's locker notes and when he calls her by her last name.

It's like Mark drew a big arrow pointing to Damien and Celine, an arrow starting from this kind old lady who loves to offer cookies. I mean, c'mon, even her name is a mix the siblings' names.

Also just because I can and i think it's funny, I'm gonna talk about Celci's name.

Her full name is Celcionna F. Kelvina. A temperature pun. There's really nothing to say except that i find it amusing and that's it's not really relevant to the lore, it's just a nod to the fact that she's head of Cryogenics. And uh, she gets nicknames, mainly from Mark: CC, Celci and well also Asshat, they both go back and forth with this. So lovely <3 lmao

Probable Conclusion:

She's Celine. Or what remains of her. How she got a body I don't know, maybe she got her own body back from the void, after all it was the only one left vacant after the mishaps of WKM.

Or:

We have many little details that make up an argument that in my opinion is quite strong. The only way you could convince me otherwise is that this isn't Celine, but Dark doing his own thing. Sending us though the loop again when we fail to stop Mark, nudging us towards the right directions, punishing us when we refuse to comply. Probably to get the Warp Crystal, which he does in the Good Ending.

Because the most prominent lighting in the show is cyan that could be a direct tie to Damien, though maybe that would be too obvious. But!! When Wil opens a warmhole for us, it's pink. So i mean, I guess it's possible, or just a coincidence.

I don't know, the pieces don't seem to add up quite as neatly as my first theory. I might as well assume that Somehow the twins were split again, but since we don't see that, and that the Dorene equals Dark theory is a bit too meta, I'll wait for what Mark has to say in his Explanation stream on Sunday.

          ms.  dorene l. whitacre.  no longer married,  but so repetitively referred to that way by the one  &&  only head engineer,  in spite of  frequent  reminders that she was not to be addressed that way.  her persistant appearance seems unsuspicious to all,  no matter how or why she appeared.  she is sweet,  fond of baking treats for the crew meant to be responsible for bringing herself  &&  the colonists to a new planet.

                her name is often referenced in different spellings.  dorine?  whitacare?  she must have known far more than she let on,  yes?  she knew quicker than anyone else did, after all.  but how could she?  she was just a  colonist,  after all.  right?

The Old Lady

(lots of ISWM spoilers an theorizing ahead!)

So, let’s talk about Mrs. Whitacre for a moment.

(or Ms., or whatever name she would prefer now.) A nice old lady who bakes cookies for everyone and tries her best to help even though she is in no way qualified to deal with the emergencies on the ship.

She shows up in both the first and second half of ISWM, first when you try to get help from the crew while Mark is around, and then when you just push the big red button to blow everything up.

In both cases, she just shows up out of nowhere whithout an explanation. In the first half not even Mark seems to question why (or even realize that) the crewmates just glitch and suddenly change into an old woman with a plate of cookies.

She just seems misplaced at first, but as we try to push on she starts talking to us directly, about dreams that don’t go away when you wake up, things seeming to repeat, trying very hard to make us question what we perceive as reality in this narrative.

Also, things start glitching up badly after she shows up. And let’s not forget how in the second half she just shows up from the void after we selfdestruct, holds a monologue about the choices we make, and then just - opens a portal just for us to take a shortcut to the end.

If we go in, she tells us we’ll see her up ahead. If we refuse, she says that we always were stubborn like she has known us for a long time, but ultimately respects our choice, leaving us with her last words being “Do you feel like you’ve been here before? Or is this just history repeating itself over and over and over again?”

The point that I’m trying to make is. I think we’ve been looking too hard to find Darkiplier in a new sleek suit, and never considered that he - she - they - might turn up in a knit burnoose.

Dorene and Celine

Since Mark has given us permission to share the stuff he said about Dorene on the mixer, I’m gonna subject you to my own theory that has been stewing in my mind since I saw it and keeping me awake. And this one is kind of weird, so it’s either going to blow your mind or make me lose all of my credibility.

But first, here is a just slightly abridged transcript of some of the things he said about her concept (I tried to stay as close to the original as possible to avoid another game of telephone).

Dorene was a special case. Because I wrote in something, because it was story important, to showcase that you should not be awake during the initiation of the wormhole. It's bad. And clearly it's bad: you, the captain, were awake and everything is caused by that. Dorene is another person on the ship who was awake at the exact same time that you were. Everything that you can do, all the choices, the infinite choices that have been made, will be made or are made and are all simultaneously occurring, that happened to you – also happened to Dorene. At the exact same time. That's why Dorene, when you first meet Dorene, is kinda like “Oh, of course I'll help” even though things are glitchy and broken, that's why Dorene during the second time gets weirder and weirder, that's why Dorene the third time is already wise to everything that's happening. There are different points in time that Dorene has been experiencing in all of this chaos, but it has been happening at the same time it's happening to you. [...] Dorene is a colonist on the ship. But just like everything on this ship, and in this universe, and in this story, things can echo and get distorted as they go backwards and forwards in time. What Space is, it's a justification for everything to occur, that has occurred. The ripping open of this wormhole, the interweaving of these multiverses, the overlapping of concepts, the area outside the universe – you know, “the void”. All these things can exist simultaneously.

There is a lot to unpack here, but what stuck with me is the concept of her being able to make choices like we do and thus practically doing her own playthrough while we struggled to save the ship.

Maybe she went down a whole different path with universes that we didn’t even encounter there, but might have seen at a different time. And maybe even experienced another story or two from a different perspective than we did. She could even have gone through some older Markiplier projects since there is no clear timeline any more.

Now I might be going a little too far, but, you know how many of us made our own heistsonas or spacesonas or just any other kind of self insert OC? And even if we never drew them, we probably had at least a vague concept in our minds.

Guys. WHAT IF. She “played” through Who Killed Markiplier and DAMIEN as Celine.

I know not everyone is on board with the theory that Ms. Whitacare is Darkiplier or at least has a connection to them (and it absolutely could be Mark just playing with us), but until I get proven wrong I’m so holding on to that idea because 1. it’s just too damn funny to imagine Dark like that, 2. the hints do point in that direction, and 3. It would be such a Mark thing to go “Ok I’m tired of this thirsty Daddy Darko shit, no more flirting, no more posing on desks. Also, what was that? You want fem!Dark? Alright! You get a sweet little old lady who’s offering you homemade cookies! HA!”
