Earth 5620 - Chapter 1

Summary: When fractures start appearing across the world, S.W.O.R.D. and S.H.I.E.L.D. work together to create a team of...specialists. It’ll take them coming together to stop two dimensions from colliding.

A/N: I haven’t written anything on here in a WHILE. So I hope you like it. :)

January 15th. Seattle. Washington

Covert. That was what they were supposed to be in this moment. Calm, cool, collected. Gathering information because this was a clusterfuck. They were waiting for higher-ups. That was their orders. Still, when she got the call, this wasn’t what she had expected.

A split between dimensions.

Cracked – but who swung the hammer? Who manipulated the reality?

Boots scuffed against concrete as she reached for it. The best way to learn was to discover. That was what she always believed and now seemed just as good a time as any to practice that idea.

“Director Carter.”

Sharon sighed. Her hand dropped to her side as she turned to see who S.W.O.R.D. had sent to help. “It’s not exactly comforting when they send in their best, Captain Rambeau.”

Monica smirked. She loved being sent in. Desk work did her no good and she figured the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the same way. “What is it?” She gestured to the crack. No, Fracture. Definitely a Fracture. It was too big. Too noticeable to be anything else.

“Was hoping you could tell me. This area is more your specialty, don’t you think?”

Her smirk grew into a smile as Sharon gave her a knowing look. It was true. S.H.I.E.L.D. specialized in super soldiers, arrogant billionaires, and things like vibranium. Mutants too, but that was because of Sharon’s aunt. There was a special interest there for them.

S.W.O.R.D. handled the weird and freaky. Things that had no real explanation. Infinity Stones…Alternate Realitiess? Or Aliens? Powers that were more than genetics and Masters of the Mystic Arts? That was Monica’s area.

There was a mutual respect between the two. One neither woman would ever dare to overstep even if their specialties chose to intertwine.

She turned her attention back to the Fracture, circling it. However, as she reached its side, the crack vanished. “It’s two dimensional.” She glanced at Sharon who mirrored her movements.

Sure enough. It was like looking through a window.

“I’ll get my men to do some readings.” Monica was already heading back to the vehicles, knowing her men were waiting on an update. “Let’s see if there’s anything on the other side.”

Surprisingly quiet, Sharon couldn’t take her eyes off the anomaly. As interesting as “another side” sounded, she had to wonder –

Was this the only occurrence?

March 19th New Orleans. Louisiana

“We need to stop meeting like this.”

Monica’s gaze shifted from the Fracture to her newest guests. “Director Carter.” She didn’t move from her spot on the ground. The reactor in her hand was still struggling to get a reading. The last thing she needed was to mess that up. “This is only the second, remember?”

“Yeah, but I’m worried about the lack of information.”

Monica sighed. Passing off the reactor to a S.W.O.R.D. operative, she rose to her feet and walked around the Fracture. It was at least twenty feet long – more than twice the size of the one in Seattle. And she wasn’t the only one to notice. She joined Sharon’s side and only just noticed the worry on Sharon’s face. It was etched so deep in her features, as strong and unwavering as diamond. Monica understood her fear. Truly.

Things had grown considerably calmer since Thanos was destroyed. This sparked problems and no one had a clue how big they were. The questions were surpassing their answers and it was enough to make both women feel ill.

“Let my specialists work, okay? If a third pops up, we’ll talk about a POA. But right now, it could be a coincidence. We got a lot of them in this line of work.” With a gentle nudge and a friendly smile, Monica reminded her, “You know that.”

“The last time we believed something was a coincidence, we had to learn the hard way that Hydra and Weapon X were one and the same.”

Monica winced. “Okay. Bad choice of words.” Looking back, she knew they should worry. At least a little. But she didn’t want to react yet. Sharon was always ready for a fight. And while Monica was too, there had been a fair amount of peace that she wasn’t ready to let go of.

Not yet.

May 7th. Boston. Massachusetts

Darcy couldn’t take her eyes off of it. It looked as if glass was breaking. In the middle of the air. It sounded ridiculous, she knew that, but it was an accurate description. This was something she would expect from an Asgardian visit. Instead – it was hovering in the middle of the Boston Public Garden. Appearing out of nowhere.

She’d guess it was at least a mile long and half a mile wide. It was huge.

“That looks weird.”

“You could say that again.” Darcy kept up her trek across the ridiculously huge park. She looked ahead and found the guy that had spoken. He wasn’t paying attention to anyone that had run away or the officers that were attempting to evacuate the park. He was completely wrapped up in the same thing she had been staring at. She joined his side. “Doctor Darcy Lewis – astrophysicist.”

He hadn’t realized she had spoken to him until she cleared her throat. Pulled from his thoughts, he glanced down at her and nodded. “Will.”

“You’re not scared of it?” Darcy raised a brow. Did he have a death wish?

Will chuckled. He propped his glasses on top of his head and gave her his full attention. His eyes – a splattering of rainbows and crystals – were almost impossible to look at. “I’m really good with weird.”

Behind them, just entering the park, Monica and Sharon slowed their run. It seemed their realization was mutual. This wasn’t just a couple cracks, or Fractures as Monica called them, this was something big. Very big.

Unable to tear her eyes away, Monica asked Sharon, “So you remember that POA I mentioned?”

She nodded. “I got a couple ideas. A few phone calls we can make.”

May 12th. Afghanistan. South Asia

He should be lifting spirits right now, being a leader.That was all that was on his mind. Hope was key – especially with the men and women. Their chance to go home had been prolonged for another five months. Five months with no contact for his soldiers. No way of reaching their families.

It was so much to ask of them. And instead of trying to give them hope, he was here. Why? He spared a glance across the room, recognizing the other guy. He was lower rank, but a specialist. His name – Benjamin couldn’t bring himself to remember it.

“You’re Master Sergeant Rogers, right?”

Benjamin couldn’t hide his surprise. There was no way. But as surprised as he was, he was also impressed. “Yeah. And you shouldn’t be talking.”

The specialist chuckled, shoulders shaking. “Our parents fought together.”

“How did you know? No one else – “

“Everyone knows. We just don’t say it.”

Benjamin huffed, nostrils flaring. He looked away only for a moment before remembering, “You’re Clint’s and Nat’s kid. Jensen, right?” He nodded and Ben shifted in his seat. “I’m sorry. About her – your mom, I mean.”

Jensen scoffed. “Look, we don’t have to get into that. I was just pointing out that we’re Superkids. That’s probably why we’re here.”

An awkward silence fell between them. Jensen, who had no interest in acknowledging the tension, simply stayed put. But Ben found himself counting the seconds, the minutes.

It took ten of them. Ten minutes of uncomfortable tension before the door finally opened.

The two stood, backs tense and hands poised, ready to salute whoever walked through those doors.

They hadn’t expected to see James Woo, FBI agent and overall awkward individual. He nodded, offering a curt smile as he said, “Hi.”

Ben and Jensen shared a look, hands already mid salute when Jimmy shook his hands.

“Don’t do that. Seriously. I’m here with a friend and we…Well, we need your help.”

Furrowed brows and confusion hung in the air. It seemed a million questions silently morphed over their features before they saw Jimmy’s friend enter behind him.

Ben smiled, recognizing her from many a training session. “Captain Rambeau.”

“Master Sergeant Rogers.” She smiled. “It’s been a while.”

“Just a decade or so.”

The two shared a laugh, easing a bit of the tension in the room. And while that was great for them, it left one person still in the dark. Jensen shifted from one foot to the other, raising a hand as if he had to be called on. “Look, reunions are great and all, but can I bring up the elephant in the room? Why’re you here?” He pointed to himself and Ben. “And why’re we?”

Monica huffed. “About that…”

Queens. New York

Flying through the air, an excited laugh tumbled from her lips. She landed on the fire escape with ease and released the webbing. Sparing one quick glance, fingers curled around her window and she crawled inside.

It fell shut behind her. With a sharp exhale, the mask was tugged off and her massive curls freed. Lena checked her appearance for a quick moment. Flipping her hair and nudging it with her fingers, she was satisfied enough. Next came removing the Spidersuit, replacing it with comfy, pink joggers and keeping the sports bra.

She was home. Extra effort didn’t have to be made in her attire.

“Lena!”

She squeaked, jumping a foot in the air when she heard her father’s voice. Normally, it was Lena’s mom shouting for her to do the dishes or some other boring chore. Her dad didn’t yell. He didn’t like yelling. Grabbing her phone, she was quick to leave her room only to find herself particularly confused when she saw her dad wasn’t alone.

Well, at least the yelling made sense now.

“Dad?”

Peter looked up. That goofy smile of his, the one she had known all of her life, was staring right back at her. But it was different. Proud? Maybe that was the word? Not surprising. He was always proud of her. “Hey, how was school?”

“It was good.” Her eyes drifted back to the blonde. She was edgy in a weird sort of way. While Lena had grown up hearing how rough and tough her mom was, this woman was different. She redefined the meaning of the word. “Who’s this?”

“This is Sharon Carter. She’s the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

“Hey, Miss Parker.” Sharon offered a smile. It was enough to melt the edges away. She softened, but Lena didn’t buy it. It was too much. As if Sharon was trying to relate to her.

“Yeah, cool. What’s this about? I have homework.”

Peter leaned against the counter. “Since when do you care about homework?”

Lena pouted. Okay, that was fair. But she found herself taking a quick step back when Sharon walked around the dining table. It was weird. She should trust her. Her dad did. But their histories in the Superworld were different. And this wasn’t a face she recognized.

“Is this you?”

Lena’s gaze shifted from Sharon’s face to the clip on her phone. It was her in her Spidersuit, swinging in and out of those random cracks that had appeared in the MoMa in Queens and the Brooklyn Museum. According to the news, a couple more had popped up in New Jersey and California. She shrugged. “Um…yeah. No one had closed them off yet.”

Sharon’s face morphed into that of amusement. She zoomed out on the clip, showing the warnings and Agents that were securing the area or had just finished.

A blush tinted Lena’s cheeks as she looked from parent to agent and back again. “Am I in trouble?”

Sharon shook her head as Peter grinned from ear to ear. “Far from it actually. If it’s okay with you, I’d really appreciate your help.”

May 20th. S.W.O.R.D. Headquarters

Terrance’s fingers impatiently drummed on the steering wheel. He really didn’t like this idea. He didn’t trust it. “Look I know Dad wanted us to help out Sharon ‘cause she’s family, but we don’t know anything about these guys.”

“Sure we do.” Sasha’s small smile didn’t reach her eyes. She didn’t like it either. She definitely didn’t trust it. “We’ve known Sharon since Dad and Papa adopted us. And neither of them would send us anywhere they didn’t think was safe.”

Terrance parked the car, getting out as Sasha followed suit. “I’m just saying, there are a lot of other big-name heroes they could be calling. This isn’t our territory.”

“And I couldn’t agree more, but I did my research. S.W.O.R.D. helped take down Weapon X and Hydra. They played a big part in bringing our parents back. We can do this.” She looked at Terrance. “But I’m not going in if you aren’t.”

He looked at the massive building, having to crane his neck. It was huge. Gaudy. Too much for people who were supposed to be blending in to do good. “They just want our abilities, Sash.”

“Maybe. But what if they need us?”

His distaste shifted to a plain, old grimace that he had given his sister one too many times. “I hate when you do that.”

She laughed. “And I love it.”

The two stepped inside the building. It was too bright. Too clean. Neither of them liked it, but they had grown used to this being “normal” for these types of organizations. You must look good to do your job. At least that was what these groups shoved down their throats.

“Maggie!” Sasha immediately brightened at the sight of her old friend making her way towards them.

“Hey, guys.” Smile unwavering, Maggie tackled the two in a hug. It made Sasha soften, but Terrance was still tense. Some things never change. “Guessing it was Uncle Bucky that talked you into this?”

“More Dad actually,” Terrance told her.

Though surprised, Maggie appreciated that Sam had managed to do this. “Well, I’m just glad to see two familiar faces,” she admitted. “C’mon. I was just heading towards Monica’s office.”

The screaming could be heard far before they actually reached the door. Terrance grimaced, already looking at Sasha as if she owed him for getting him here. Who could have caused such a huge fight when they weren’t even there yet?

And hearing so many voices, he had to wonder – how many people had they asked for help?

“Um, I think we’re in here.” Maggie grabbed the door. With a sharp tug, she held it open for them and gave them a peak of the chaos inside.

Overlapping voices, overwhelmingly loud. A girl in a green Spidersuit hung from the ceiling with no intension of coming down. A blonde guy, super tall and screaming “Captain America” vibes was currently holding back a smaller, brunet.

That was the guy doing most of the shouting. And it wasn’t to everyone. No. It was to one guy. He was arrogant, smirking because he clearly held the power. He wasn’t shouting. He didn’t feel the need to. Instead, he shrugged and waved to the newest additions in the room.

One guy currently being shielded by two familiar faces. Monica and Sharon. They were desperately trying to calm down the screaming guy.

And then there was the last one – standing by the door. He looked over his shoulder, nodding to Terrance, Sasha, and Maggie. “Glad you could join us.”

Terrance shook his head, his elbow hitting Sasha’s rib. She hissed, rubbing her side as she muttered, “Ow.”

He gave her the look. That look that every sibling gave when they truly meant what they said next. “You owe me.”

` ✦ ° PARIS BERELC, CISFEMALE, SHE/HER. — i wonder how cassandra castillo made it all the way to east river? the nineteen year old red has been on the run for three years, which makes them the most dangerous escapee out here. they seem pretty self-assured and loyal, but their tendency to be vain and impulsive makes them a danger to society. i guess we’ll just have to see how skilled they’ve gotten with their ability of pyrokinesis.

` ✦ ° FROY GUTIERREZ, CISMALE, HE/HIM. — i wonder how raphael “ralph” peres made it all the way to east river ? the twenty-one year old green has been in hiding for five years, which makes them one of the most dangerous escapees out here. they seem pretty mischievous and energetic, but their tendency to be nosy and stupid makes them a danger to society. i guess we’ll just have to see how skilled they’ve gotten with their ability of enhanced intelligence.

CASSANDRA CASTILLO !

when the outbreak begins, her parents get nervous. they have two kids already, one on the way. everheart’s has no rules yet, so they fear for the worst. they’re lucky. the worst is yet to come. cassandra is born without any complications.

cassandra was born in mystic, cn. she and her family lived deep within a spiralling neighbourhood surrounded by trees with a nearby lake. doctors and lawyers can afford that privacy. it keeps them and their three children safe from prying eyes.

her childhood follows three simple rules: stay away from the windows. never answer the door. don’t get too loud. they live as if they’re dead.

for her tenth birthday, they have a barbeque outside. the nearest neighbour is half a mile away and they’re safe to be out and laugh out loud. her siblings humour her with a game of tag. as cassandra leans against a tree, counting aloud, she lights it on fire.

the fire department answers immediately, but when one of the firefighters notices child-sized shoes in the window, there’s nothing the castillos can do. psi special forces are at their house within an hour. they take her to thurmond.

it’s hell on earth. every time she so much as sneezes, there’s a gun trained to her back. they call her trouble, question why they didn’t kill her in her parents’ backyard that day. their answer comes when they decide to move her to a new camp. one for reds. by some godly miracle, the driver is a defector. he’s not with the league -- he brings kids home.

he drops her off at the address she remembers and leaves. the house is still large and beautiful with a picturesque sky as a backdrop. but, the second her knuckles make contacts with the door, it ignites. its an accident. regardless, their beautiful sky is quickly filled with thick, black smoke.

she runs. she runs until she can’t anymore. cass is tired and bitter about her whole life. she remains callous, and quick-witted. she’s sharp because she has to be. honestly, with her volatile personality, it’s hard for her to stay under the radar. her best bet was finding the fabled camp of the slip kid.

RAPHAEL “RALPH” PERES !

ralph was born in winthrop, wa. he can hardly remember what life in the little town was like. his parents separated when he was young -- money problems, mostly to blame. fear that ralph was going to die as a close second. his dad moved them out to seattle, wa. and by the time he was four, he was native to the city.

in retrospect, ralph’s life would’ve been much different if he’d never left. see, shortly after, a car accident took his eyesight. for the first few years afterwards, it was difficult for him. he was young. adjusting wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been, but he was still blind.

it was hard being the blind kid, but it was easier with his friends. when their classmates were dying left and right, and it seemed like the end of the fucking world was coming, they made a pact to run away. it was a joke, of course. but then, one of them died.

he’s the one who brings it up -- what if... what if we leave? it was idealistic dreaming, but by the time they’re seventeen, he makes up a plan and they vanish off the face of the earth.

ralph has always felt that it was his responsibility to make everything “okay.” he hates people tip-toeing around him. he’s not sensitive. he’s a joker. he has fun. he has a mischievous side.

sure, now he can do better multiplication than matilda. but, ralph is stupid. he’s a genius, but he doesn’t make the best life choices. he tries his best, alright.

“YOU WILL BE FOUND” NATIONAL COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING CHALLENGE 2021 | DEAR EVAN HANSEN

In partnership with Gotham Writers Workshop and the Broadway Education Alliance, DEAR EVAN HANSEN invited 11th-grade and 12th-grade students across the country to write a college-application style essay that describes how they channeled “You Will Be Found” to ensure those around them were a little less alone over the last year, or, alternatively, a moment where they found comfort in connection.

READ FINALIST LIV’S FULL ESSAY:

I stared intently at the blue-lit laptop, oblivious to the vibrant full moon shining through my window. My headphones were poised and queued with the song “We Are the Champions” for when I saw proof of a 4.0 on my report card. The long-awaited ping from my laptop muffled my jams, and my stomach dropped as I opened the report card to see an “A-.” THE HORROR!

I sat there stumped. Throughout high school, I felt as though I had sacrificed everything to round out my resume with leadership roles in several clubs, participation in sports, and most importantly, a flawless 4.0. I questioned myself. Why had I spent all those days stressed out and isolated only to fall short with a disgraceful “A-?” Why had I expended so much energy not to achieve the goal of perfection?

My feelings were out of my body; I could not reach them by sitting in my uncomfortable spinny chair. When I stood up, I felt claustrophobic in my own home because the weight of my failure took up all the space inside. I ripped open the door to give myself the space I needed outside.

I had to skip my favorite Queen song, and instead, AC/DC’s “Problem Child” helped convert my heartache to anger. I stomped over to my driveway and started to violently throw my body in every which way, punching and kicking the air in an attempt to release some tension. My sweat and tears wrecked my mascara, but just before I let myself think that I had nothing else to lose, I allowed the music from my headphones to swell over my frenzied brain. The moonlight peaked out of the cloudy skies of Seattle, lighting up the pavement like a disco ball just as the song “Dancing in the Moonlight” began to play. My violent movements turned into a fluid groove. My arms swaying in the sky grounded my mixed emotions, and once they did, I did not feel the back-breaking weight of imperfection. My less than graceful dance moves did not waver in the eyes of my bewildered neighbors. I was finally allowing myself time to do something just for me, something at which I did not need to be perfect. I had always sacrificed this kind of creativity to check all the rubric boxes, ensuring the perfect grade. Perhaps this “A-” was a gift.

After simply dancing for the fun of it, I found my mind entirely refocused in pursuit of spreading my newfound freedom. I discovered that I wanted everyone to have the chance to share in this feeling, so I invited people to join me. It started with my family, jazzing up the kitchen to the tune of the Manhattan Transfers’ greatest hits, and spread to gathering my friends to perform Mamma Mia in empty parking lots. My love for dancing has spread to strangers. At a stoplight, windows down, jamming to songs from the Lion King, I notice that the notes find their way into other cars. Two mutual strangers can share a dance and peel off in different directions with a smile on both faces. Now it has become a tradition of mine that whenever there is a full moon, I will gather whomever I find around me to share the relief of the moon and the music.

This song and the moon on that lonely, disappointing night helped recenter my mind in pursuit of finding the light to help push through darkness. I still feel a healthy amount of stress, but I never let it get to a debilitating point. My new definition of perfection is striving to reach my creative potential by learning from my mistakes. Changing my mindset has created a positive energy that is infectious. The good is there. The moonlight shines on everyone. My mission is to get everybody dancing outside the box.

Soon after I began writing, I came across a Photo Blog post. When I became a Contributing Writer for Collective Voice Magazine (formerly State Of Liberation Magazine) I went full speed exploring all the creative blogs to get ideas and learn from those more experienced than I. This is when I set my eyes on a Photo Blog.

One did not have to have years of blogging under there belt. I had absolutely no experience at time I joined this awesome writing team!

I came a blog post one day that was very different than what I had seen prior. The content of the post was primarily pictures. Below the photos was a Caption or a Summary of the photo. The summaries were at times very brief, some were a little longer. However, nothing like content usually found in a writer’s post. Mostly a story in words with images space throughout the post.

The first photo blog I saw, instantly I put creating one of my own on my “To Do” list. In fact I intentionally seek them out at times. Many Photography Websites might have such a story told in images.

I am NOT a photographer. Pictures I take will be done with my phone. But the day has come and the time is now for my own PHOTO BLOG!

Visiting the Pacific Northwest in late Spring and throughout the Summer is awesome! What’s even more awesome is being lucky enough to fly in when “The Mountain Is Out!” It does not take long to learn, if you are not from the Pacific Northwest, when locals say “The Mountain Is Out”, they are referring to Mt. Rainier on a sunny day. A breath taking view, to be seen for miles. This image is from one of my descents coming home, taken from the plane.

Or, if a visitor would rather, it is not a problem to get “up close and personal” with Mt. Rainier. This photo was taken in Mt. Rainier National Forrest. Standing there in all her glory.

If you would prefer or after you visit “The Mountain”, head East and spend some time at Snoqualmie Falls in Fall City, WA. Fall City is a very small town, but loads of fun! Snoqualmie Falls is just a few more miles to the East. The falls run into the Snoqualmie River, which runs through Fall City. When Summer arrives and the weather gets warm, “Floating” the Snoqualmie is the thing to do. I have not personally have not been on the “Float” before. However, do not doubt, it is climbing high on my bucket list.

This photo is also Snoqualmie Falls, just provides a different view. The flow of the Falls in these two particular photos is pretty normal. However, about three years ago, we had an extremely cold and wet winter. The weather began to warm and we set record rain fall. One day we ventured up to Snoqualmie Falls and it was unbelievable how raging it was. Observers could feel the mist and pure power of the water.

Looking down river. This location is the part of River that runs through Fall City, WA. I probably took this photo early Summer. The river is full of Snow Melt from the mountains and is freezing! When the weather gets much warmer and the rafting begins, floaters will be all over the river.

And, SO DID I!! Ten minutes from home. Pack a cooler & beach necessaties. We were there for the day! When you’re done, pack up the car and head just across the street to one of the two bars in Fall City and enjoy a nice cold beverage of your choice.

When we lived on the Eastside of Seattle (suburbs) the river and the falls were literally 10 minutes out the front door. When we wanted to switch up the scenery, we headed to Golden Gardens. Along with what often seems to be along with EVERYONE else. Golden Gardens is nestled in Ballard, WA. Ballard is is a community in the heart of Seattle. Don’t let the sunshine and sun bathers fool you. This beach is on the Puget Sound, not sure if it gets above freezing!

We made the big move from the suburb to the city. Admittedly, is was not without a bit of Culture Shock, we are still adjusting at times. I captured this image close to our building in the city. When I glanced out the window at each visual, I suddenly had a feeling of something new. A new neighborhood, new lifestyle, and adjusting sleeping habits to shut out the of the city. When I view both of these photos, I see and feel each and every newness and adjustments we are making.

Speaking of changes, this type of change can be seen all over the City of Seattle. These photos were taken when I was right out the front door of our building. Not the same day. They were taken about a month apart, obviously at different stages of construction. I loved the reflection in the one on the left in the glass windows of the fully constructed building in the background. When complete, it will ba hotel. Not just A hotel, but the tallest hotel “this side of the Mississippi”. So I have been told.

I could not leave you without these last two photos. Boating Season is celebrated here in Seattle in a huge way. Seafair is a weekend long event when we are happy to see the Blue Angels return and perform a spectacular show. During Seafair, there are many events and entertainment such as Hydro-Plane races. It is all very cool.

Now, I’m finished, here are my thoughts on creating a Photo Blog

My initial thought is, I have a lot to learn.

Creating a Photo Blog is also not a easy as I had expected. For example, all of my photos I wanted to feature were not neatly placed in the same folder. They not all the exact size I wanted them so I had to take the time to coordinate sizes according to placement.

As far as the written content, I found myself with the need to monitor how many words I added after each picture or group. Clearly when we are use to more written content, this issue is not always in the forefront of our minds.

If you are a photographer and do photos bogs, please share your link. I would love to look at more. In addition, if you have any ideas, topics, tips or tricks, please share for others who might have an interest. And, for me as well, more are definitely in my future.

Get Housing’s Hottest New Trend: Wearable Tiny Homes!

Unless you’ve had your head buried in some massive McMansion for the past decade, you’re probably aware that tiny houses are just about the biggest trend around. These miniature abodes—which rarely exceed 500 square feet—are cheap, eco-friendly, and oh so cute. Which explains why folks ranging from NFL star Deion Sanders to hipsters to corporate bigwigs are rushing to downsize.

But guess what? Some people think tiny houses are still too big. As a result, they’ve come up with a way to make them even smaller, cheaper, more eco-friendly and yes, even more adorable than ever before.

Behold the next big thing: wearable homes.

Why live in a home when you can wear one?

Here’s how they work: Rather than opening a door and entering your house, you wiggle into it. An oversized skylight or chimney allows your head to poke out the roof, while your arms extend out windows and your legs out the floor (there’s a trap door for bathroom trips).

Then at night, you curl up—tight—to fit inside and go to sleep.

Sound uncomfortable? Truth told, it takes some getting used to, early adapters say. But hey, so did tiny houses, and look how those caught on! And if you look around, wearable homes aren’t actually new … in the animal kingdom.

“Turtles do it. Snails do it. Why not humans?” points out Tony Timmons, a tiny house builder in Boulder, CO, who pioneered the idea of wearable abodes to meet his clients’ demand for radically reduced living spaces.

“We were already were building homes that our clients could barely squeeze into,” Timmons explains. “We eliminated the loft, the living rooms, even the bathroom. But even that wasn’t enough. They wanted less, less, less.”

Once Timmons outfitted his first satisfied customer in a wearable ranch, his phone started ringing nonstop. Since then, other tiny house builders have followed suit and shrunk their floor plans, offering an array of architectural styles from elaborate Victorians to daring Mid-Century Moderns with floor-to-ceiling windows perfect for showing off your home and your abs all at once.

And in case you meet that special someone and need more space, you’re in luck: Manufacturers have just started offering wearable duplexes (if you part ways, they’re detachable).

Not surprisingly, celebs are hopping on board. Kim Kardashian was recently snapped by paparazzi on the red carpet wearing a stunning Mediterranean with an extra-large basement. And globetrotting do-gooder Angelina Jolie was spotted in Namibia swathed in a rustic, traditional mud hut, with miniature versions for her six kids—by most accounts, the world’s first wearable-home community.

Imagine: Wherever you go, you’re always home

The benefits of wearable houses abound. For one, they’re highly energy efficient, since your body heats the whole thing. There’s no need for pricey security systems, since anyone who tries to break in will be within punching or macing distance. Plus, travel is a breeze—no need to worry about finding a hotel room or Airbnb!

Fitting onto a commercial flight, on the other hand, is still an issue. Jet Blue is the first carrier so far to accommodate the trend, with its premium “Extra Extra Extra Room” seats.

Yet challenges remain with wearable home design. For one, although there’s some cabinet space for snacks, cooking can be a challenge. In one recent case near Seattle, WA, a wearable-house fire erupted that left its owner, Ike Rivers, suffering from second-degree burns.

“I was just really craving a grilled Gruyère sandwich,” Rivers says. “And things got out of hand.”

Another problem with wearable homes is one that has long plagued traditional “tiny” homes: You can’t just park them anywhere. Just ask Sherry Robbins, who had found a nice patch of land on the outskirts of San Francisco to put down roots in her wearable Tudor. Within hours, she was apprehended by the police.

“They called me homeless,” says Robbins. “They just don’t get it. I am home. I am always home. And I love it.”

Honestly guys, how can you resist? Maybe it’s time to downsize into a wearable home of your own. But before you do, check the date on this article first.

The words, and plenty of them

I had planned this trip since spring but hadn't gone due to work constraints. A window opened up in September, but it quickly closed due to life getting in the way. And then it happened: Early October, nothing holding me back. I was ready to go, to clear my head, to get away from work and you. Yes, you - the guy who swerves in and out of traffic at speed. And you, the lady who cannot stay off her phone. And don't think I've forgotten about you, bro - I see you hiding back there - the guy who literally ignores BSM. What better cure for driving frustration than to go.. driving. Or something.

Tramlining and then it got cold

I left San Francisco on Friday afternoon, taking 80 east to Reno. This was well planned, nothing left to chance except for the most common sense thing: weather reports. There's an app for that, of which I have 3 and of which I used 0. This was not the smartest move as would be apparent this night and later in Montana, but for now all was well. Weather was warm, pavement dry and I'm moving at a good pace through Sacramento and into the Sierra Nevada range. The mountain section of 80, specifically the right lane is in terrible shape. I'm tramlining all over the place for too long, in too many sections, a constant jerky right, left, left, left, right, right fight on the wheel. Despite this I'm determined to stay right except to pass.

Its getting pretty cool out, and about 8PM I pull into the Truckee rest stop to discover its cold, 38 degrees. I know thats not cold to you Midwest and East Coast people. Kinda balmy. But to a coastal CA guy that's just about below freezing. I make a mental note about the Michelins not being rated for this temp, brush my teeth in the parking lot (classy is how I roll) and go to bed or rather recline the seat. I wake at 3AM and its time to move.

Leaving Truckee I discover tramlining is not done and it's another fight. And then the squeaking started from somewhere in the dash. Its a heavy grating noise and not a rattle; loud and obnoxious like my nephew. I'm pressing on the dash, the gauges, the vents - the usual places but nothing changes. Ten minutes later it's gone and does not return. Took the Boomtown exit and hit up Chevron. Go inside for coffee and pay for gas, pretty mundane but then I ran into a change scam. Some Eastern Euro guy was behind the counter. I give him 40 and he tells me he'll put 35 on the pump, and to come back for change. Not what I asked for but whatever. Returned for the change and - lets call him Uri - claims there's no change to be had. Its 3:30AM and I'm in no mood to get into this. Enjoy the $3 bro.

Coffee, water and no rest areas. Also, LTE coverage is terrible

Back on the road and passing Reno AKA the drab copy of Vegas. Detector warns of 2 KA alerts but the signal is weak and I exit Reno without issue. Kept going east to Winnemucca, turning north on 95. The problem with 95 - other than being a long stretch through flat arid country - is the lack of rest areas combined with tidal pool-sized coffee cups and water. You know what this means and yes, I marked my territory in several places.

This stretch of nothing leads to the first of far too many LTE signal cuts and corresponding loss of Waze GPS updates. Through most of NV, and really, really long stretches of ID and MT there is no signal. Which I completely understand since ATT is a discount carrier a small mom and pop telco its really hard to relay signals over flat terrain its 1996 and cell phones are still a novelty. Signal loss in WA and OR along 101 - that I understand, and it happened frequently given the terrain. But issues in flatlands especially Idaho's more populated state routes - that I don't get.

And here's where I took the first acceptable picture of the car. Its a farming community, maybe a half mile of 25 MPH with a gas station, coffee house, cafe and sheriff's station. And one thing I found interesting, the Sahara Motel. 50s or early 60s design; sharp angles, cracked windows and peeling paint on the doors. The last paying guest was a long time ago and it makes a good backdrop.

The Rag Company mission aborted; Shelby meets buttocks at Craters of The Moon

I'm off to Boise to find a hotel and stop by the Rag Company. Missed their store hours and tomorrow's Sunday, with Monday a holiday so.. no Rag Company visit. I chalk it up my usual level of masterful planning and stay the night at the Holiday Inn in Meridian. if you find yourself there someday stop by Beto's 24 hour Mexican place. The chicken chimichanga (fried burrito) is outstanding.

With sunrise it was time for my first destination open whenever - Craters of The Moon National Monument. Never been, never heard of it, just a random find when looking up Idaho tourist destinations. Taking 84 SE was unremarkable, but connecting to 20 was another story. Going up to 4k elevation, golden grass on the hills and plains, fall colors on the trees. Beautiful, with some fun stretches of road interrupted by people who dr.ive. ve.r.y. s.lo.w.ly.

Passed through Carey which is another livestock community with the requisite aroma d'odure. Up to this point I've mostly seen F150s, RAM 1500s and the occasional minivan. But here comes this kid in his JDM Civic, Idaho plates, red with all the toppings - wing, different colored bits here and there. Didn't check the rear but you know there were fart cans attached. Flat bill cap tied it all together. What I remember most is the look on his face as he passed, staring at my car like that guy on what show was it? The guy with the wild hair who says "I'm not saying its aliens..". Yeah. He had that look on his face. Stay strong, brosef, you're the outlier in the land of the lifted.

Keep going and the route takes you over Silver Creek which is famous for fishing, something I didn't know. Also didn't know that with fish come bugs and a lot of them. I know how to describe these because I took Entomology 101: big ole brownish-yellow, low-flying squishies with lots of guts. Stopped to carefully clean it off but there's too much bug juice, a full wash is needed later.

About 2:30PM I rolled in to Craters of The Moon. It looks like the name, kinda bleak and barren and perfect. Wide, cloudy skies from here to where the flat earth ends and vaccines aren't needed. I stop by a small hill and walk up to the crest; hidden behind is another crest. Decent pictures. Coming down I see some tourists standing around the car. Some guy is leaning his posterior on the hood and having a picture taken. This excites me a wee bit and I leg it to explain the finer points of no touchie; I know its complicated. They are French (not the Quebecois variety); explanations were offered, much hand gesturing ensued, apologies made and Trans-Atlantic relations were preserved (you're welcome, America). I keep rolling albeit with a blood pressure higher than normal; I like this place minus butt guy.

Back on the road and I pull over for gas at Picabo. Station appears to be closing; their coffee is lukewarm and does not look good. Made my way to a rest stop for Operation Caffeine Overdose ala Jetboil and French Press and yes, it was great, full bodied and delicious. Fully amped I drive east toward Montana and Yellowstone but I can't quite make it. 9PM rolls around and I stop at a random rest area, writing out notes on the day. There's a silver Mercedes roadster a few spots over, I'm guessing early to mid 90s (SLK? Not familiar with Mercedes). It looks really good, sleek, fast and small. Fender flares, looks like aftermarket wheels and the driver is staring at my car. I go back to writing notes and look up a few minutes later. He's still staring. Got out to rummage for food and that's when the driver walks over: JB from Texas. 6'4" or so and has about 100 lbs on me, in a dark parking area - but that's not the problem. Problem is he's a close talker. Protip for tall guys talking to strangers in dark places: Don't be a close talker.

I ask JB about his car and he says it was his first, got it new in 99 when he was 15. That's remarkable and I asked how he pulled it off. After this point little things were said that raised some flags but nothing major, things like European cars being cheaper to repair than domestic. But then it got weird, with JB stating he's a retired Air Force General, and his wife a retired Navy Colonel (for those unfamiliar, there are no Colonels in the US Navy). JB doesn't appear old enough to make 04 much less General, so I ask how old he is and this produces a long pause- really long (he was doing the math, 15 in 1999 now its 2018.. this minus that, carry the 1, no wait just subtract, x = y and divide the ... and he got it wrong). Finally he says "40." Amazing. A 40 YO retired General, he must be a legend I've never heard of. I decide to leave before the inevitable JSOC story. There's always a JSOC story.

Yellowstone and KA bands

Morning rolls around and I awake at another rest stop. Get the jetboil going and its not long before 191 gets me to Yellowstone. Just before the park is the town of West Yellowstone and here the radar detector pays gives another assist. A few cars on the road and we're approaching a bend. KA alert is a sudden, strong signal and there he is, local Sheriff sitting just past the bend. He starts to follow after I pass but I'm in the clear. About a mile down I'm the only car on this stretch and just for giggles he lights me up. I get it, its a holiday weekend and no better time to get low hanging fruit like speeders and drunks, but come on, Deputy Dog. I innit stupit. Me gud drivor.

Yellowstone. Incredible driving roads but again no bueno to open it up, a fact reinforced by another Deputy exercising his radar skills (quite good, no alerts at all til I rounded a corner). If you like fly fishin' this is the place, and I made several hikes with one decent picture to show for it. That's my bad; arrival time (11AM) meant I had to wait awhile for acceptable light. Could be there's a pattern here.

I visit Ennis and find an El Camino for sale

Leaving the park I point the car to Ennis on route 287. This is a tourist-focused town. You like huntin', maybe fishin', little bit of hikin', you want it they got it. In the gravel lot next door was a bright light shining through parting clouds, and I may have heard a chorus because there she was, a 1987 Chevy El Camino, 71k miles, 10k asking down from 12. Looked in good shape, badged SS and V8. I didn't closely inspect it, and I'm no expert in verifying SuperSport models from any era. At any rate trans isn't my thing. But still, good looking history on wheels.

Butte, where the rubber meets the road (or snow, in this case) and Georgetown Lake

And now I'm in Butte. I neither wrote nor recall much of this drive, my mind said write but my body said sleep. Made it in good time and got a room, and you know what? It's freaking cold. Like... dude. COLD, low 30s. Up to this point I still haven't checked weather reports because I'm a rocket scientist. Woke at 5AM and found a coin op car wash and yes, its cold and getting colder. I'm worried about the tire temp rating and this is compounded by a light dusting of snow. I realize my IQ has to catch up and GTFO to a warmer climate. S/SW is good but too obvious. N/NW is more my mongo style on highway 90; temp decreased to 28 degrees and snow had built up as a fine slush, but not frozen. At least there's no snowplows, that would be a bad sign. And then a few miles in there are snow plows, thankfully they appear to be pre-positioned and sitting there. This must be one of the first snows of the season, and my escape velocity is tempered by MPSS running well below threshold. Went gentle on the inputs, reduced speed and held it steady. No problems keeping it straight and thankfully stopping distance was not put to the test.

I self-flagellate for a number of miles, slowly building confidence and moving from light snow to rain. Stopped at a rest area to inspect the tires; no cracks or other issues found, nor did any appear during the trip. The air intake and grille had ice build up, good news is it was a fairly small area on either side.

I left 90 at Hensley Gulch, turning west on highway 1 AKA Pintier Veterans Memorial Scenic Highway. This was the most beautiful road of the trip, its scenic and then some. Rolling, gentle hills, mostly livestock and horses. More long sweepers with minor elevation changes, and then you get to Georgetown Lake, otherwise known as the place I'll buy when I win the lotto. Not been? Go, its worth your time. For me this was a pass-through, but I'll remember this drive for a long time, a little bit of paradise I had the privilege to observe.

Crossing back into Idaho, and the memory of what was

Back in Idaho; a light rain and miles of yellows, browns and greens. Cruise control country like most of the route so far. And then the song played; the one that takes you back to what was or could have been. The one you do and don't want to hear, so you bury it, ignore it but can't quite hit delete. The opening guitar conjures her face and you can feel her touch. It's good and real and bittersweet and you wonder why it ended, but you know why.

I arrived at Coeur D'Alene. Passed through a few times before but never stopped by the lake, and I'm glad I did. 50 square miles of water surrounded by hills with marinas interspersed along the shore. Twisty roads with some straights that reminds me of Skyline. Only here I take it easy, I don't know the roads so I run an inspection cruise along a 20 mile run: 1 cross, 7 deer in 2 groups, 2 school bus stops, 0 cyclists. On the way out I see a flatbed loaded up with a wrecked white 911 (recent) and Camry (00's model). The Porsche's passenger door is off the frame and the roof looks partially caved.

Slim left behind a syringe, one of those rubber hose things they use to tie off, an empty brown packet about the size of rubber packaging and some random bits and bobs. I return to the car thinking how sad it is this guy has a fix at the ready while preparing the jetboil and french press, and only later does the irony become obvious. As I said, I'm smart. I break the ice and he says, "I'd give you a run against my Hellcat." I'm not down to measure manhoods or compare cornering so I don't. He inspects the car and doesn't like the PPF, doesn't like hoseless wash. He does like the shine but I get a blank stare when explaining what ceramic coating is. All this was fine until he decides to touch the paint: "Is that a rock chip?" I don't know what it is about paint but some people can't stop themselves from touching it.

Second and last visitor gone I continue with Frothe. Easy to use, lifting the dirt does take a fair number of towels (6 in my case) and that's fine, I've brought a lot. No visible scratches or swirls but I didn't go CSI on this, it's clean, it shines and I was careful to follow the lifting vs pushing method. Speed, Karma & Laser Cats Cops

Continuing on 90 its flat agricultural land that reminds me of CA's central region with more rainfall. Traffic is very light, only a few cars and this Corolla - I'm thinking early 2000s model - comes up fast behind me. Really fast. What's remarkable is the great condition of the paint, this car is cosmetically well taken care of. I know because the driver, lets put him on the younger side of 18, passed at high speed and very close, swerving to lane change. I deploy the universal sign of disapproval and hope he learns his lessons before its too late. 20 miles down the road I see flashing lights and the state patrol is keeping him company. Karma, bro. It don't mess around.

On my last WA visit the city of Pasco (further south, not far from the OR border) had an aggressive ticketing posture. This time I didn't write down the name, no time to pull over - just a city between Snoqualmie and Seattle. KA band up ahead, and another a 1/2 mile after that. But they're not done, this is a pack operation. Mr. Laser Cop is parked after the 2nd KA cruiser, and its clear they mean (big) business. This was the second laser strike in WA during this trip. Thankfully I did not contribute to the register.

Seattle and Pike's Place

In my mind this was going to be a great picture, something to print. Low light, low angle, blazing Pike's Place sign in the background. Got there too late for that, about 10AM due to heavy traffic and the Frothe field test. No biggie. Only problem is I'm from SF where car break ins are rampant and my car is chock full of stuff. Leave it like this at home and you're coming back to broken glass so I keep the car in sight.

Lets see.. Starbucks, not my first choice and it looks like Disneyland with all the tourists. I find an indy coffee purveyor, enjoy my dose and buy some overpriced t-shirts. And then its time to leave, but I drive around and I'm reminded that Seattle is what SF used to be: Not too crowded and a little laid back. Locals will tell you otherwise and the COL is too high, and there's too many people from CA who moved here, and they're right and wrong. But its vibe is nothing like SF and I hope it stays that way. Seattle is its own thing.

Newport, Oregon and the awkward stop light

I'm driving through Newport, another coastal town and this one has a fine dining establishment I'm keen to visit, Taco Bell. You may have heard of them, may I recommend the 20oz Mountain Dew for optimal caffeine delivery. Leaving town I stop at a light, windows down because the Top. Men. did such a great job with the aircon. A Chevy truck (older one, S10 maybe) pulls up alongside. The driver has a ball cap on backwards, dark sunglasses and a Tom Selleck mustache. "Hey man! I'm a Chevy guy but I really like your car, that back end is something! Love how you put it together!" The words form in my head and my mouth opens to speak but he's gone before I can say anything. So there I was, mentally constipated long before the physical effects of this value meal, unable to tell him with urgency and a longing for relief that no, its stock and I'm not a Ford engineer or modding genius. Frustrating.

I ordered pizza and met our Lord and Savior

I stopped for dinner at a town close to Eugene. Its time for something healthy, like pizza. Yeah. Pepperoni and a cold one will do. Nice enough place, nothing fancy and nothing you'd remember. Except the guy who took my order was Jesus Christ Superstar. Brown shoulder length hair and a full beard, neatly done. Semi-olive complexion and I'm wondering if my Aramaic is up to speed, or whether I should be his agent for the Broadway revival. Mostly I'm wishing my long hair days hadn't ended and I briefly wallow in envy. At any rate the pizza was good and Jesus was a nice guy. Good to know.

.. just kidding. I kept driving south, down to CA, following 101 as it looped in and out of the coast. It wasn't until Eureka that I was reminded of a specific subculture. The sun was setting as I drove through, and this is it, i knew it - The Walking Dead isn't fiction, its right here, game over and all I've got is a multitool. But it was only the patchouli and herb loving drum circle crowd and there were a lot of them coming out of the shadows. Maybe Phish was playing, but I think they broke up? Doesn't matter. Welcome back to California. I'm so excited to visit my dealership and have a really long conversation about the A/C, my feelings and unmet expectations and maybe a hug at the end. Nah, forget that. It was dark and raining. I just came off the bay bridge in SF and am positive I was driving below 40 on the bridge and between 40-60 when I got off the bridge. The cop was on 80E past fremont exit.
