The Irish in Regency England
What was life like for Mr. Thomas O'Brien, an Irish gentleman in Regency England?
From the playscript, we know that Thomas is a student at Oxford. In 1815, his family is better off than Henry's, and in 1821 he is able to afford a fine London home for his family. My educated guess is that Thomas studies law at Oxford, which would be an appropriate occupation for a younger son. It's also possible O'Brien is the eldest son obtaining a gentleman's education without needing to pursue a "profession" (an eldest son's job would be managing the family estate/fortune).
Irish-English relations during the Regency were tense. There was a major, bloody rebellion in 1798, and in 1801 the Act of Union dissolved the Irish Parliament and combined Ireland, Scotland, and England into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Irish Catholics were considered second-class citizens, with the Protestant minority holding political power. Cruel stereotypes and jokes about the Irish abounded, and there was a push to "educate" Irish Catholic children.
There were still Irish-English marriages and relationships amongst the gentry, however, and Jane Austen herself had strong ties to Ireland. Her mysterious beau, Thomas Lefroy, was Irish, and her nieces married into Irish families. In Persuasion, the wealthy and respectable Captain Wentworth is mistaken for an Irish man.
Thomas O'Brien would have been able to move through Regency society if he were Protestant and his family old and/or wealthy enough; however, he would have been well aware of English attitudes towards the Irish and his country's uncertain future.
