EP Review: Abiuro/False Gods - Abiuro/False Gods Split (Doom Fujiyama)
Eastern and Western sludge-lords unite! Sludge-doom affront False Gods and sludgecore outfit Abiuro are preparing to unleash their ever-grimy upcoming split EP via Doom Fujiyama on April 7th, 2023. This split is less an example of the listener sinking in a sludgy pit they stumbled upon and more of an example of a sludgy tidal wave that has devastated humanity. The two tracks from the filth that…

Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Jonathan Frakes guest stars in "Face of Fear," episode 20 of the fourth season of Quincy, M.E. (original air date March 24, 1982).
I wasn't going to continue making these posts while I was having trouble with my corneas and using a borrowed computer, but when I got hold of these episodes of Quincy I couldn't resist. Maybe I'll just come back and edit them when my peeper are in better shape. I'll definitely come back and add alt text to the images.
Frakes plays Leon Bohannon, a drug dealer whose name is brought to you by the letters O and N. He kills one of his mules during a deal gone wrong in his business partner's beach house. The only witness is a neighbor who suffers from severe agoraphobia and is walking past the window on her first trip outside the house by herself in seven years. Because of her emotional stress and self-medication with alcohol, the police don't believe her until the forensic evidence Dr. Quincy finds in the autopsy of an apparent Jane Doe corroborates her story. In an ending that brought a big smile to the face of this Gen X kid, when Bohannon tries to kill the witness, she runs for sanctuary to the nearby mall where her husband had been taking her for desensitization. Is there anything a trip to the mall can't fix? Look at him, getting apprehended outside the Casual Corner!
Other Trek connections under the cut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul Carr, who played Enterprise helmsman Lt. Lee Kelso in the Original Series episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before," has a small role as the witness's husband.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr. Quincy's regular contact on the homicide squad, the gruff but jovial Lt. Frank Monahan, was played by Garry Walberg, who appeared as the doomed commander of Outpost 4 in the Original Series episode "Balance of Terror."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
John S. Ragin played Dr. Quincy's boss, the long-suffering bureaucrat Dr. Robert Astin, as well as Dr. Christopher, Dr. Crusher's prime suspect in the Next Generation whodunit episode "Suspicions."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr. Quincy's assistant and one-man forensics team, Sam Fujiyama, was played by Robert Ito. Before there was CSI, there was Sam. Or, as he's better known to Voyager fans, Harry Kim's Dad (S07E19, "Author, Author").
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, last but not least, the lady herself, Jeri Taylor. Taylor was the executive story editor of this episode, but that's just the tip of the iceberg of her involvement in the worlds of both Quincy and Star Trek. She was in the writers' room of 44 Quincy episodes as either a writer, story editor, or executive story editor, and produced an additional 24. Starting out as a supervising producer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, she worked her way up to executive producer and eventually showrunner in the seventh and final season. The co-creator of Voyager, she served as executive producer/showrunner for the first four seasons, stepping back into a creative consultant role for the remaining three. She wrote and co-wrote scripts - nearly 200 in all - for The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager; penned two Voyager novels and the novelization of the Next Generation two-parter "Unification;" and worked on the production teams of the feature films Generations and First Contact.

for funsies i made a list of every time mind control is a plot element in the first two seasons of g1 and who’s doing it* (using the TFwiki episode order):
S01E04 Transport to Oblivion: Bumblebee has his memory chips altered after he’s captured by the Decepticons so he can lead the other Autobots into a trap
S01E11-13 The Ultimate Doom: Various humans are mind-controlled via a hypno-chip invented by Dr. Arkeville on behalf of the Decepticons
S02E02 Changing Gears: Gears has the personality circuit that allows him to be grumpy removed by the Decepticons, rendering him so Nice that he can’t refuse orders to help them construct a sun harvesting machine. (This is a pre-existing condition and the autobots joke about not putting the circuit back in at the end of the episode)
S02E04 Attack of the Autobots: The Autobots (minus Jazz and Bumblebee) are turned Evil after Megatron puts a gadget in the recharge beds that turns any autobots who recharge in it into a tool for his will
S02E05 Traitor: Mirage is embedded with a cerebro-shell by Bombshell of the Decepticons that turns him into a double agent against the Autobots
S02E10 Enter the Nightbird: Nightbird, a robot ninja constructed on Earth by Dr. Fujiyama, is reprogrammed by Bombshell as a weapon for the Decepticons
S02E12 The Core: The Constructicons are tagged with mind-controlling Dominator Disks by the Autobots to make Devastator a Decepticon asset.
S02E13 The Insecticon Syndrome: Soundwave is hit with a Cerebro-shell by Bombshell so he can’t reveal the Insecticons’ planned double-cross to Megatron. Starscream is also tagged with a cerebro-shell but is never controlled into doing anything bc it’s at the end of the episode.
S02E30 The Secret of Omega Supreme: In backstory, the Constructicons get turned into obedient Decepticons by Megatron’s Robo-smasher. Omega Supreme is partially reprogrammed by the Robosmasher as well.
S02E31 The Gambler: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Perceptor, and Inferno get mind-controlled into being slaves for a gambling alien who persuades Smokescreen--NOT mind-controlled--to use them as collateral
S02E36 Auto-Bop: A bunch of humans in New York are hypnotized by Soundwave and Starscream’s sick club beats
S02E41 The Key To Vector Sigma Part 2: The Stunticons are created by Vector Sigma for Megatron with the stipulation that they be totally obedient. I feel like this counts.
*This doesn’t include the episodes where various characters are unstable or upset and manipulated into working for other factions, OR the times when one or two wires are cut to just completely shut a Transformer down.
On a scale from G1 transformers to Girl Genius how acceptable is mind control in your canon
