- Kwani l'eletta
Autore: Linda Lay Shuler
Editore: Nord
- Madre terra padre cielo
Autore: Sue Harrison
Anno: 1990
Autore: Kathleen e Michael Gear
Editore: Piemme

J.C. Felts, 87
J.C. Felts, age 87, of McGrady, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville. He was born December 17, 1931 in Wilkes County to Everett and Cordelia Absher Felts. Mr. Felts was a member of Mountain Valley Baptist Church of McGrady and a US Army Veteran. Mr. Felts was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Christine Davis Felts; brothers, Don Felts, Edward Felts; and sisters, Hazel Felts Greene and Ruby Felts McGrady Royal.
The patriarch of the gospel singing group "Felts Family" and husband to Christine Felts as well as daddy to Cathy and Vicki went home to be with the Lord and join his wife of 66 years on September 28, 2019. His life began with very humble beginnings to a family during the depression. He lost his dad at age 5 and was then raised with two brothers and two sisters by a very determined Mommy. Despite all of his childhood struggles he overcame them all. At age 21 while working in Lenoir, he met a 16 year old young lady, Christine Davis. 30 days later they ran away and got married. Shortly after getting married he joined the Army and proudly served for two years. Leaving the military with a life long disability and with the help of his wife Christine, he successfully built three businesses from the ground up; at the same time raising his two daughters along with traveling as "The Felts Family". While building the business, "Felts Grocery and Snack Bar" he took his family and traveled for fifteen years singing the gospel.
He was a charter member of the McGrady Fire Dept. as well as the Halls Mills Ruritan Club. As he reached his retirement years he once again began a new venture, J & J Mobile Home Park. Throughout the rest of his life he continued being faithful to God's calling as a deacon, working in his local church as well as spreading the gospel in song at every opportunity.
When tragedy struck his wife of 66 years he faithfully took care of her until her death, June 1, 2019. For him he then felt like his work on earth was finished. The things that brought him joy in his later years was making music with old friends and playing his guitar. But the thing that brought him the most joy was knowing the family tradition of gospel singing was going to be carried on by his granddaughter, DeAnna Bumgarner Lovette and her family. J.C. Felts was not a perfect man but he was a perfect daddy, grandpa, great grandpaw. It brings us real peace to know he and our mother are now singing God's praises together and they will never grow old or sick again.
Surviving are his daughters, Cathy Bumgarner and spouse Garey, and Vicki Carty and spouse Tim all of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Deanna Bumgarner Lovette and spouse Bobby of Wilkesboro, Rev. James Jason Bumgarner and spouse Michelle of Millers Creek, Tabitha Lovette of Ronda, Rebecca Shepherd Minton and spouse Anthony of Wilkesboro, Brandi Carty Linville and spouse Kenneth of McGrady, Samantha Carty of North Wilkesboro; and twelve great grandchildren.

The Battle of Versailles Fashion Show, 1973 – WWD
https://pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/battle-of-versailles-02.jpg?w=640&h=415&crop=1
“Americans came, they sewed, they conquered,” a front-page headline declared in WWD on Nov. 30, 1973, pronouncing the winner of the Battle of Versailles.
That landmark fashion show, anointed as the “Battle” by WWD’s legendary editor John B. Fairchild, pitted five French designers against five from the USA and became one for the history books. It was unique in its conception, and stupefying in its execution and outcome, partly because the French had spent an estimated $30,000 each for elaborate stage sets, while the Americans came with backdrops that didn’t fit the stage, leaving them to rely on canned music, pools of light, some snazzy choreography — and chutzpah to spare.
It was a triumph of sportswear ease over couture fussiness, and something of a cultural moment in that the stars of the show included Stephen Burrows, a Black designer whose vivacious jersey gowns were praised to the heavens by competitor Yves Saint Laurent, and 10 Black models, including Bethann Hardison, Billie Blair, Norma Jean Darden and Pat Cleveland, each captivating and original in their way of walking, twirling and emoting.

The event has perhaps the longest tail of any fashion show or fund-raising gala. It spawned an exhibition at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1993, a book by Washington Post scribe Robin Givhan in 2015, and two documentaries, released in 2012 and 2016. A movie treatment for HBO, written by Ava DuVernay and based on Givhan’s work, is still in the works. In 2011, the Huffington Post handed its Game Changer Award to the African American models at the Versailles event.
More than an uber-glam party, the show sparked the internationalization of fashion, elevated the prestige of American labels, transformed runway shows, opened more opportunities for Black models and — “Sorry, Madonna,” Cleveland demurred — introduced the world to vogueing.
In addition to Burrows, the other four American designers were Anne Klein, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta and Halston, while Hubert de Givenchy, Emmanuel Ungaro, Pierre Cardin and Marc Bohan for Christian Dior rounded out the French contingent, headlined by Saint Laurent.
Writing under the nom de plume Marie Antoinette Esterhazy, Fairchild detailed the extravagance of the event. He pilloried elaborate sets erected for the French designers, calling them “so tacky they weren’t even camp.” Cardin had a rocket ship; Dior a pumpkin-shaped carriage; YSL a “mile-long Bugatti chugging on stage;” Ungaro a rhinoceros pulling a gypsy cart. The French contingent also featured a 40-piece orchestra, dancers from the Crazy Horse cabaret, Rudolf Nureyev and musical icon Josephine Baker.
It all seems prescient of recent runway razzmatazz, with major European heritage houses constructing elaborate sets and hiring marquee entertainers, albeit with more flair and aplomb.
The American designers at Versailles had Liza Minnelli, dramatic pools of light — and energy to spare. Esterhazy, née Fairchild, enthused that “the American mannequins knew how to move in the clothes they showed.”

The serious method of French fashion shows in those days — models carried numbers, and walked without music, hips thrust forward — would yield to more animated displays in subsequent years. (Forever cheeky, Jean Paul Gaultier long mocked the old system at his couture shows by conscripting the likes of Catherine Deneuve to call out the numbers of each look, along with a saucy description.)
Beyond show business, the Versailles showcase marked the beginning of the “internationalization of Paris” as a fashion capital, according to Didier Grumbach, longtime head of the Chambre Syndicale, French fashion’s organizing body. He noted that English designers Jean Muir and Ossie Clark, plus Japan’s Issey Miyake, also began showing in Paris around that time, giving the French a run for their money.
The fund-raiser, viewed as a promotional event, did not generate much media attention then, or in subsequent years, in France, though it was meaningful and impactful for the U.S. industry, according to Grumbach. American licensing firms, until then focused on a roster of French names, began to see the potential in designers like de la Renta and Bill Blass.
Observers agreed that the 10 Black models selected by the American designers not only owned the night, but impacted the French fashion establishment.

Grumbach notes that André Courrèges, Ungaro and Saint Laurent used Black models since the Sixties, but not as extensively as post-Versailles.
Hardison, who caused a sensation with her steely confidence and dramatic throw of her gown’s lengthy train, characterized the presence of so many Black models that night more as an expression of the freewheeling, progressive Seventies era than a manufactured statement about diversity.
She noted that each model had to be selected by three of the five American designers, and “it was a balanced cabine,” she said, using the French term for fit models. “There weren’t only girls of color.”
Yet she doesn’t underestimate their impact. “Mr. de Givenchy was smitten with the girls of color,” she said. “The idea of a Black model inspired him.” In 1979, de Givenchy became “the first couturier to have an all-black cabine,” WWD reported in a front-page story penned by then-Paris bureau chief Andre Leon Talley.
According to Hardison, the popular music that soundtracked the American segments, played from cassette tape at high volume, was a similar revelation for the French — and a reminder that energy, from the speakers and the models, is a potent ingredient that can make fashion more impactful, and memorable.
Cleveland described the sojourn as one big party, from the moment the models boarded the plane to the cold supper in the royal apartments that capped off the grand fund-raiser. Organized by public relations doyenne Eleanor Lambert and Versailles curator Gerald Van der Kemp, the event raised money for the rickety palace’s renovations.
And while the French presentation came off as stiff and old-fashioned, the American segment pulsed with the vibrancy of the groovy disco era, and a more liberated view of femininity.
Models on the stage. Fairchild Archive/Penske Media/Shutterstock
Cleveland said Burrows instructed her and other models to line up at the edge of the stage and strike poses — hence the spontaneous invention of vogueing, according to her.
“We were trying to bring life to the clothes,” she enthused. “It was bodies moving under the flag of creativity, of design.”
That the American contingent chose to have many Black people representing fashion had a big impact on French shows in the coming years, Cleveland said.
Donna Karan, then Anne Klein’s right hand — and pregnant with her daughter Gaby — lamented that her boss “wasn’t exactly welcomed as a woman.” She noted that Klein was the only designer shunted to the basement of the chilly palace to prepare her segment.
Klein’s approach to fashion, hinged on sportswear, also raised eyebrows, but ultimately dazzled.
“It took Paris by storm, there was no question about it,” Karan said. “The French were so in shock of the American clothes. ‘What do you mean you don’t have hooks and eyes and you just throw them on?’
Models on stage. Fairchild Archive/Penske Media/Shutterstock
“The Americans were just so far into the future. It was about ease of dressing, day to night,” she continued. “[Klein] was ahead of the game.”
Following Klein’s death from cancer in 1974, Karan and Louis Dell’Olio jointly took up the design reins, with Karan bringing a bit of inspiration from the battle.
For their second fall collection, Karan chose to parade it at The Winter Garden Theatre. “I think I was a little Versailles-driven,” she recalled. “Everybody stood up and it was just like being in Versailles again and they realized this was a show.”
Indeed, the collection landed on the front page of WWD on May 10, 1976, with the paper declaring that “it was like an opening night on Broadway.”
What’s more, the clothes triumphed, with one retailer lauding them as “still fresh-looking even after seeing sportswear in Europe for three weeks.”

The evolution of tennis fashion
More than any other sporting attire, tennis uniforms have played an important role in reflecting fashion trends and cultural shifts, and players have always been scrutinised for their style choices as well as their performance. In the early 1900s, when modesty and elegance was prized over comfort and practicality, women had to prove their highest athletic skills donning bulky ankle-grazing skirts, tucked-in, long-sleeved blouses, neckties and the occasional voluminous hat over perfectly coiffed hair. This constrictive dress code partially relaxed in the 1920s, when Suzanne “La Divine” Lenglen became an international trendsetter by bringing the flapper style of the decade onto the court. Her uniform—sleeveless dresses with just-below-the-knee pleated skirts, monogrammed cardigans and chic crimson and bright orange bandeaus—was designed by French couturier Jean Patou and landed her in the pages of Vogue in 1926.
Other sartorial innovations were less easily celebrated. In 1949, American tennis player Gussie Moran stunned her Wimbledon crowd by wearing an unusually short skirt that revealed a glimpse of her lace-trimmed underwear at every movement. The designer behind the scandalous outfit, British-born Ted Tinling, was accused of bringing “vulgarity and sin into tennis”, but he was simply forerunning the shortening of hemlines that would race through fashion in the next decade. Despite being banned from his Wimbledon hosting duties for the following 33 years, Tinling continued to design one-of-a-kind outfits for the best athletes in the field, from Maria Bueno’s Dacron and PVC minidress to the rhinestone-encrusted green and blue dress that Billie Jean King wore for her famous match against Bobby Riggs in 1973. Tinling’s revolutionary ensembles opened the doors to new colours, materials and silhouettes and paved the way for the more extravagant outfits of the 1980s and 1990s, culminating in the Williams sisters’ unique fashion choices. To celebrate the opening of the oldest tennis tournament in the world, revisit the history of tennis fashion in 15 images.

Most Anticipated Movies of 2018 (Part 1 of 2)
What are you looking forward to in 2018? For moviegoers, the much-talked-about upcoming movies are likely the answer. As the new year is just around the corner, AceShowbiz has compiled a list of movies that should not be missed, with the genres ranging from horror to romance, from comedy to action, and from musical to superhero.
The list of Most Anticipated Movies of 2018 is divided into two parts, with the first part dealing with sequels. “” and “” are set to follow the success of the predecessors, while the likes of “” and “” took a long time to come.
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Release date: June 6
While “” helps bring characters of color into the MCU, “” will be the first Marvel film to have a female character taking the center stage. Already an integrap part of 2015’s “”, Hope van Dyne, played by , is stepping into the Wasp suit in the upcoming film, with reprising his role as the “deadliest” superhero. The two have to team up to rescue Hope’s mom from the quantum realm. By working together, their personal and professional relationships are bound to get tangled. Bringing back as Hope’s father Hank Pym, the movie adds as the original Wasp, and as Bill Foster a.k.a. Black Goliath, the second Giant-Man, to the already impressive cast.
Avengers: Infinity War
Release date: May 4
The new “Avengers” film is going to get more crowded, literally, as there are more than sixty characters that will appear in the film, but fans are looking forward to the friendly banters between these superheroes. Unlike the first two films which mainly featured the same members, the team will reportedly undergo a major shake-up in “”. Having been torn apart following the events of “”, they have to join forces with the in order to stop Thanos () from collecting all Infinity Stones for a gauntlet that will allow him to bend reality to his will. The film will also mark the cinematic debut of Carol Danvers a.k.a. , played by , before her solo film is out in February 2019.
Deadpool 2
Release date: June 1
Defying the common ground of superhero films with dark humor and R-rated scenes, “” became a big hit at box office in 2016. Its sequel strives to maintain this unique quality, though it means that it had to part ways with director Tim Miller who reportedly fought for the film to have bigger budget and bigger scale like Marvel films. is back as the Merc with a Mouth, but all eyes are on the arrival of his grumpie future cyborg bestie Cabel, played by whose dedication to the role has earned praises from fans despite the actor playing the big bad Thanos in “” films. Another character making her cinematic debut in “” is Domino, who is portrayd by Zazie Beetz.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Release date: November 16
Gellert Grindelwald’s plans to create a wizarding hierarchy to dominate all non-magical beings and to the magical community caused chaos in “”. Still being the main villain in the sequel “”, Grindelwald () has escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore () enlists the help of his former student Newt Scamander (), who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Those curious about Dumbledore’s love relationships may find the answer here as the movie is said to explore more of his personal life and depict him as an openly gay character, true to the canon written by author J.K. Rowling.
Fifty Shades Freed
Release date: February 2
Succumbing to the lust and passion in “” and “”? Then you should not miss “”, the third and final installment of the erotic film franchise based on E.L. James’ popular novel series. While the second movie takes things between Christian Grey () and Anastasia Steele () to the next level, the last film really brings their love story home. But that doesn’t mean their problems are over, as their marriage is tested once again when Ana’s former boss, Jack Hyde (), is out for revenge and Elena Lincoln (), the woman who seduced teenage Christian, slinks back into the newlyweds’ life to cause more trouble.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Release date: June 22
Continuing the huge success of “”, its sequel “” will not only impress in terms of storyline and actors, but also in terms of graphic and video technology. Directed by J.A. Bayona, the filmmaker behind great films such as “” and “”, the film sees the return of as a Navy veteran and former dinosaur trainer Owen, with reprising her role as Claire Dearing. It appears that so much has happened since the end of the 2016 film as Owen and Claire are no longer an item. The movie will also get us nostalgic with the return of as Dr. Ian Malcolm.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Release date: July 20
Donna and the Dynamos are back, a decade after “” became a huge box office hit in 2008. “” is going to open in theaters this summer, and the recently-released trailer is packed with a lot of amazing footage and plot twists, while at the same teasing ‘s cameo as the Grandma, the brand new music and the all-star cast. Mission: Impossible 6
Release date: July 27
