Every single election, when I hear the millions of fucking ads, get tons of the flyers, I think to myself these people are spending billions of dollars that they could have used to save people but instead they're using it to try to gain more power. How does that ever make them good people? Think about that. I want to be the president so I can help save people but instead of saving people right now with my money I'm going to spend it on ads so people will know that I deserve to be president? You know what? I would vote for the person who didn't advertise at all and actually did save lives with their money. But that's never going to happen. Not even fucking Stein does that.

Cate Blanchett steals the show in stunning sequin dress at Producers Guild Awards

Atenção: spoilers!

Acabei de assistir a Don’t Look Up e já digo que o filme é um soco na cara de todos, sem poupar nada e ninguém, uma crítica tão pungente e devastadora da sociedade atual quanto o cometa assassino “planet killer�� cuja chegada iminente é anunciada e em princípio desacreditada.

Muitos o tem saudado como uma defesa intransigente da ciência acadêmica e uma condenação ao negacionismo e ao conspiracionismo em boa e oportuna hora, numa hora em que ainda haveria tempo, mesmo com tantas mortes, para que esses renitentes pecadores se “arrependam” e se convertam de vez em crentes e fiéis seguidores da Igreja do Covid, parem de questionar a existência do vírus e finalmente façam mea culpa e se rendam às vacinas. Sim, o cometa, que seria uma metáfora do vírus invadindo e destruindo um corpo, está perto, mas ainda não chegou, digo, para os que tiveram a sorte de não terem sido contaminados pelo vírus.

Seria apenas isso se ao longo do filme as críticas não atingissem também a própria ciência que se prostitui - quando o astrônomo Leonardo DiCaprio pretere a ciência pela mídia e cede ao assédio da jornalista Cate Blanchett, traindo sua esposa, bem como quando a candidata a PhD Jennifer Lawrence, ao ser fritada, cai no desbunde - e como o cometa vai devastando tudo pelo caminho: a política e o Estado - a presidente dos Estados Unidos Meryl Street só pensa em sua popularidade e seu assessor é um boçal -, os militares, a NASA, o show business, as mídias sociais e o próprio povo idiotizado que não passa de gado e massa de manobra.

Peter Isherwell (Mark Rylance), um bilionário da tecnologia poderoso, CEO da corporação BASH, que paira acima de todos como um deus e direciona as ações da presidente e da NASA, e que no fim é quem sela o destino da humanidade, é a perfeita encarnação dos novos “visionários” e “utopistas” do Vale do Silício, e assim quer ser encarado, rechaçando ser um “mero” empresário, quando assim é designado. O perigo maior para o mundo, alerta o filme, não é tanto o cometa, que poderia ter sua rota redirecionada a tempo não fosse justamente a intervenção de Isherwell, que persuade a todos de que com seus drones seria capaz de extrair seus valiosos minérios que não só o deixariam mais rico e poderoso mas por tabela acabaria com a  humanidade, e sim esses loucos como Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison e Larry Page, lembrando que metade dos homens mais ricos do mundo estão no Vale do Silício.

E quando todo o discurso do filme parecia a favor da ciência, eis que o final é de surpreender. A ciência e a tecnologia falham fragorosamente em deter o cometa, que surge nos céus como um instrumento apocalíptico e de justiça do próprio Deus, de quem todos, em sua soberba e prepotência, haviam se esquecido. Ciente, cientificamente, de que nada mais restaria a fazer, o astrônomo DiCaprio reata com sua esposa e retorna à sua velha casa e ao seio de sua família, morrendo junto com eles e com os amigos que o acompanharam, plácida e complacentemente, não sem antes realizar um ato de comunhão à mesa com direito à oração feita com a ajuda do namorado evangélico de Jennifer Lawrence. Mais conservador que isso, impossível.

Enquanto o mundo inteiro é implacavelmente arrasado, Isherwell e uma pequena elite, incluindo a presidente dos EUA e seu staff, deixa o planeta a bordo de naves espaciais que haviam sido prévia e preventivamente construídas para uma ocasião como esta. Então o filme terminaria dessa forma, com os responsáveis pelo fim da humanidade indo reiniciar as suas bobagens em outro acalentador planeta?

Eis então que 27.000 anos depois, isso mesmo, as naves pousam no que parece ser a nova versão do Paraíso, e os tripulantes, que haviam sido mantidos vivos criogenicamente, despertam de seus sonos milenares e saem nus em pelo para fora, encantados com o cenário de esplêndida beleza. E antes que tenham tempo de comemorar, logo são devorados pelos animais aparentemente dóceis e inofensivos que se acercaram das naves...

A questão final é: será que o filme foi feito, tal como muitos foram feitos antes da pandemia, para nos alertar e nos preparar para uma catástrofe semelhante que se avizinha? Há um filme dentro deste filme chamado Total Devastation, que Hollywood produzira às pressas para capitalizar a onda de expectativa quanto a chegada do cometa assassino. E tal como previra esse filme imaginado, no filme realizado a catástrofe realmente ocorre...

Se hoje em dia nada nem ninguém se salva, como no filme nada nem ninguém se salva, a não ser talvez a alma dos pecadores arrependidos, então é certo que o nosso pobre mundo já está condenado.

WIG REVIEW: DON’T LOOK UP

I think I speak for all of us when I say: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS MOVIE?! Adam McKay has stopped making silly Will Ferrell movies and started making “Oscary” dramadies for a while now and all of them are overdirected messes. This is definitely the messiest! If you like apocalyptic space jams, troubling love interests, vaguely indicting climate change and qanon conspiracies, Jonah Hill quips, random cameos, upsetting nudity and absolutely abominable wigs, this movie is for you. Let’s discuss! 

Ok first off: this movie is about Leo and JLaw discovering a meteor that is headed for the earth and everyone only has 6 months to live but no one takes them seriously because they are...kind of fugly? I like Leo in comedies! He is very funny! He doesn’t wear a wig in this but he’s supposed to be a space professor and everyone thinks he’s handsome even though he fully deglammed hisself in this and sweats a lot. FINE!

JLAW’S WIG IS AN ABSOLUTE CRIME AGAINST NATURE. 

When this wig first appeared, my mother exclaimed “IS THIS ON PURPOSE?” and there is no way that on any level the answer can be “YES.” WHO SAID THIS WIG WAS OK?!?!?! I HAVEN’T SEEN A RED WIG WITH BANGS THIS BAD SINCE THE QUEENS GAMBIT!! 

This wig has many (MANY!) issues. The texture is garbage. THERE IS NO HAIR PART ON TOP!!! DON’T LOOK UP ON TOP OF THIS WIG!! NO SCALP! This is like a super cheap Halloween wig. AND! THE! BANGS! The bangs are so long they create side mullets?! Apparently the wigmaster worked really hard on this trash but that is fully not evident on screen. I guess this character is generally supposed to be some alternazoid punk who no one takes seriously because of her appearance and therefore no one trusts her about her meteor theories. At one point, Jonah Hill calls her The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and I suppose that was the goal but in redhead form? REGARDLESS THIS WIG IS A GHOSTMARE.

 Anyway! JLaw and Leo find help in their quest to spread knowledge about this earth shattering meteor with Rob Morgan who is CURSED WITH THIS WIG. I have no idea why they decided this character needed a wig at all, let alone this very obvious and downright dusty one but NOPE.

ALSO: Cate Blanchett is in this and I realize she is supposed to be a gross morning show bot and I honestly don’t know what is more upsetting: her fake teeth or her wig (TRICK QUESTION: IT’S HER LOVE INTEREST IN THE FORM OF LEO! HE’S MOVIE MARRIED TO MELANIE LYNSKY! RUDE!) Apparently she wore her own fake teeth and recycled wig from Bombshell because of Covid restrictions and I have to say: I appreciate recycling on any level so will give this a passing grade solely based on that (and the fact that this wig and character are Bombshell adjacent anyway!) 

Speaking of Republican nightmares, Meryl Streep ALSO used her own wig person and specifically wanted the kind of droopy ringlety hair that most alt-right women sport these days. Dame Meryl Streep can do no wrong and this is for sure the best wig in the entire movie but DUH.

Also this character is essentially a female Trump (with her son, Jonah Hill being a male Ivanka) and that kinda sorta worked (as did like 20% of this movie?) but regardless: this very specific wig WURQED.

My other favorite part of this movie was Mark Rylance who is always fabulous and plays a sort of Elon Musk/Jeff Bezos style dude with a very strange and grating voice. This wig is ridiculous but so is the character and CYNTHIA NIXON WISHES HER WIG WAS THIS GOOD! 

Like most man wigs, the main issue was the back of the neck taper which is NOT GOOD but this character still made me (and Meryl) smile. 

Things devolve quickly and all the topical humor becomes a kind of kitchen sink mess with a few vague laughs here and there, mainly from Rylance.

Also everything kind of becomes an indictment of Trump/qanon/anti-vaxxers? Which like: ok fine but IT’S A LOT.

AND THEN TIMOTHEEEEE CHAMALET SHOWS UP IN THIS MULLETT! THE AUDACITY! WHO INVITED THIS CHARACTER OR WIG?! No one needs another bent ass wig or pseudo punker character in this movie. CHAMALET AWAY.

I wish the entire third half of this movie could Chamalet away? I won’t spoil it for you if you care, but THE END OF THIS MOVIE IS HORRIFYING AND DAME MERYL STREEP SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO GO THERE!! HARRUMPH AND FOR SHAME!
