Don’t Start Now is one of the few pop songs that I’ve picked up on in recent years from hearing it in wider culture. This is a mark of its ubiquity more than anything else: whilst all but the biggest chart records are now safely filtered away in their own bubbles, Dua’s are amongst the elite that have the wings to sweep them to TV trailer spots and crossover radio play. As such, I honestly couldn’t tell you where I heard it first: much like her own vast fame and popularity, Don’t Start Now’s popped up in the background vibe feels like a throwback to a more monocultural era.

One of the things that really hooked me on Dua is her endearing in-song persona: the strong, dominant woman with a vulnerable streak. Don’t Start Now boils that down to its essence, a beyond heartbreak song where the split is past, good times are here again but now that guy’s come back around and Dua’s just going to have to give him the brush off. It’s this emotional dimension that really gives the song the space to take off: the piano chords that resonate through the chorus feel like drama occurring in real time - he’s just walked into the club? The fucking nerve! - whilst the lyrics hover on that borderline between renewed confidence and something a bit more pained; a clear desire to be seen to be over it. The sheer insouciance with which she delivers the line “Are you the guy who tried to hurt me with the word goodbye?” is perhaps one of the best fuck yous in pop history and her carefree laugh at the end makes for the perfect kiss off.

Musically, Don’t Start Now feels like its stretched extraordinarily tight - hooked to a disco bassline which loops, thumps and pivots like it has a mind of its own - but there’s never a sense of brittleness to it, rather one of infinite flexibility. And indeed, might this be a figurative version of Dua’s experience in itself? A woman pushed out of shape by heartbreak, she is in time able to regroup before finally reasserting her power. Much like a Weeble, Dua may have wobbled but she did not fall down.
