Today's compilation:
Oldies But Goodies, Vol. 2 1987 Pop / Doo Wop / R&B / Soul / Rock & Roll
Briefly dipping back into this series that was released by a label that pioneered the art of repackaging oldies hits into nostalgic compilations in the first place, Original Sound, founded by beloved Los Angeles-area radio DJ Art Laboe in the early 50s. Laboe is, in fact, credited with coining the phrase, "oldies but goodies," and that also happens to be the name of his initial, essential, and landmark 15-volume series.
But those volumes have been retooled and reissued over the years, and this excellent slate is not the original second installment in the series, but a 1987 reissue of it instead, which still shows Original Sound's brilliant knack for compiling eclectic records that had both unforgettable classics on them as well as songs that charted well, but didn't end up enjoying nearly as much of an enduring legacy.
So, along with a tune like The Beach Boys' terrific 1965 cover of The Regents' "Barbara Ann," are songs like Shades of Blue's "Oh How Happy," an upbeat mid-60s blue-eyed soul tune by a one-hit wonder group from the Detroit suburbs that comes with ring-dinging bells aplenty and was written by none other than Edwin Starr. It went to #12 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and #7 on its corresponding R&B chart, and while those are pretty good placements, I really wonder how many people these days are actually aware of this song's existence 🤔.
And same goes for The Larks' "The Jerk," another mid-60s soul tune, which marked the first and only time that vocalist Don Julian, who sports a wonderfully butter-smooth falsetto all throughout, would chart, reaching #7 on the Hot 100 and #1 on R&B; another great song that had its brief moment in the sun, but doesn't seem to have really received much shine since its initial release.
I should also mention that I really love the style of doo wop tunes that are on this album too. I'm not one who's much for the slow ballad-type song, with a straight-ahead lead vocal and backup singers that sing with ooh-and-aahing harmonies; I much prefer the vocally dynamic and uptempo stuff, in which each singer, from deep bass to high falsetto, has their own significant and indispensable role to play, and when they all come together, it can yield something that feels damn near magical. The aforementioned "Barbara Ann" does this wonderfully, but so does Curtis Lee's 1961 breakout, "Pretty Little Angel Eyes," which went to #7 on the Hot 100, and The Edsels' "Rama-Lama-Ding-Dong," which only made it to #21, as well.
Another fantastic set of oldies from this unmissable series. Got another one of these on deck too, so stay tuned!
Highlights:
Danny & the Juniors - "At the Hop" Big Joe Turner - "Shake, Rattle & Roll" Curtis Lee - "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" The Beach Boys - "Barbara Ann" The Newbeats - "Bread and Butter" The Edsels - "Rama Lama Ding Dong" Paul Anka - "Diana" Shades of Blue - "Oh How Happy" The Larks - "The Jerk" Mel & Tim - "Backfield in Motion"

Lark - Gerskier Part 1
AN//// Ok, so I was watching Brave and I came across this art of Wolf Geralt and Bird Julian, and I made this. I don’t think anyone else has don this, but let me know if someone has. Let me know if you all want a part 2!
Geralt/Jaskier
Summary: The witcher is trying to forget, but an interruption had turned his world on its side once more when a bird wakes him
Part 2
The night was sadly still young. Silence spread throughout the forest, though the witcher knew it was just a calm settling over the wood. A calm he used to be fond of. He could focus in the calm wood, meditation coming easy to him. Geralt had just completed a contract on a leshen in the forest, having to take out the wolfen followers along with the thing. The clearing he had settled in gave him a high vantage point to anything that dared try and attack. He had gotten used to trying to find vantage spots when traveling with Jaskier.
At this point, it seemed not to matter as the bard hadn’t traveled with him for months. The scuffle on the mountain had proven to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Geralt had spent an extra hour looking over the fog ridden valley after unloading onto the younger man, but decided he would most likely catch up if he didn’t rest on the way back. However, it seemed that the bard had thought of the same thing. When the witcher had made it back to Roach, the black bag that Jaskier finally convinced him to let the mare carry was gone.
Geralt would never run after someone would leave, especially after the bard, but he knew it was for the bard’s own good. There was a reaction he always had towards Jaskier when he was around, and he knew what it was. He had felt it before he was dropped on the Path with Vesemir. He had felt it again, fleetingly when he first met Yen. It was something that he refused to say however, even think of it. Last time he had spoken of fate or emotions, even in jest, he had bound himself to a child.
Renfri, Yen, and even other boys during the trials all made him feel the same, and they all ended up the same. Hurt or dead. Whether it was his fault or not, he had always been intertwined with them. He was only projecting the mistakes he made in the past onto the man when he yelled, and tried to keep him away in the process. Of course, it had worked.
But at what cost?
Not much, it seemed.
Everything was set back to the way it had been before, but with a couple of perks. It seemed that the bard continued to sing about him, and the reputation given by the tales had helped when he travelled to the next town. People seemed to still spit, but it was aimed at the ground, and not himself. He had yet to face someone trying to jip him of his money and full pay, and there have even been a few free drinks thrown in. He hadn’t needed to meditate before every fight to take focus from the extra body on the battlefield with him, and he had his bed roll all to himself. The forest’s wildlife seemed to be happy with the halving proportions. One more rabbit is spared each meal, and less spices are used to bring flavor. That seemed to be another small change of his- he now used spices to add to his meal because he wanted to. The vials take up space in his saddle bag that could be used for potions and it adds extra to the cooking time, but he decided to continue to add them even after the bard left.
But the forests were now quiet again, the inns were few and far between and whores were being paid for. There was that unsettling feeling again of mixed emotions he was left to sort on his own and it was fine.
Everything is fine because it was all back to the way it was. Before.
Before a loud, clambering bard wiggled his way into the witcher’s heart and mind.
He used to hope that when they would split for small increments that the bard would decide not to come back of his own accord- not being pushed away. Though, now that he’s gone, he misses him. For obvious reasons, though he knows he would rather walk alone then face the pain on the young man’s face.
Silence was good before and so it shall be again.
-
-
Weeks went by and he found himself in another silence and another clearing. He laid his bed roll out, and spread himself out. The sunset had painted blue everywhere, and he had to close his eyes to try and block it out. The colors had bled past his lids, however; the last light pushing- forcing the blue onto him. It wasn’t hard to drift away after clearing his mind, but blue eyes did find their way into the fleeting dream he had.
He hadn’t woken of his own accord. Before his eyes snapped open, though, he tried to asses the pin pricks he felt on his cheek. Two three pronged items flattened and bounced against his skin. Again, a small, blunt item hit his skin, his nose involuntarily twitching when it gets jabbed. A soft flutter was felt rubbing against his cheek, and a saddened chirp could be heard before another jab struck.
A Bird?
His brows furrowed, and he popped an eye open. In front of him sat a blue and yellow bird. A steady stream of sad whistles kept leaking from the thing, until it made eye contact with Geralt. It hoped back onto its tiny talons and started to bounce; the chirps becoming loud. He hadn’t wanted to hurt the thing, but he also didn’t appreciate the space violation. His hand scooped under the bird; the animal losing its footing and rolling back into his hand. Geralt sat up, and the bird tried to fly at him, but for a short moment, he fell from the air. The witcher’s hand flew out, and cushioned the fall. He brought the bird in for closer inspection, but the only thing he noticed was the pain he felt. The colors had resembled the same, peacocking color scheme that he had first met his bard in.
“You don’t wear doublets, do you?” He said it in jest, but the loud, desperate squabbling to his question didn’t go unnoticed. His brow raised, and he let out a grunt. Geralt placed the lark on the ground, and stood. He slowly gathered his items and started to re saddle Roach. The bird flew and landed on Roach’s head. She tried to shake him off, but another round of small chirps fell from it. Neighs were thrown is response, but the chirps kept coming. It seems the bird had won the argument, but the mare threw a look to the witcher much like the she did when Jaskier was ranting.
The witcher turned to grab the rest of his things, bending to pick up the broken chain links of his medallion. It had gotten wrapped around the claws of the werewolf that had ambushed him a night past. He had grabbed the item itself, but became quickly alarmed. The vibrations were faint, but there. His eyes darted to the bird and walked toward it. His hand was slightly outstretched, and when the bird saw it, it started to bounce again.
“You know this?” It gave a small flutter of its wings as a response. It starts to chirp again, and Roach snuffles. She turns and looks to her friend apologetically before lifting onto her hind legs. The bags he had placed on her, but had yet to secure slid off, and plopped onto the ground. The bird ruffled its feathers, seeming to psych itself up. It soars for a moment towards the bag, but falls again, rolling slightly. The birds head snapped to look at Geralt, who stared back. A small smile was on him, and the bird bashfully hid its beak in its wings. The bird continued the path the path to the back, disappearing under the flap. He slowly made his way to the bag and crouched, waiting. There was a surprised chirp, and the rummaging under the leather had ceased. Then, wrapped lute strings flew out from under the flap.
His eyes widened. He had forgotten that he kept spares after a drunken fiasco the spring before he yelled at the man. It had only taken him to put it together.
“Jaskier?” The bird launched itself at his chest, chirping as loud as it can. He captured the bird in his hands, cupping his hand around it. His brows were furrowed, and he grumbled. The bird nuzzled its head into the meat of his palm, and he let out a shaky breath. “Prove it.” A questioning chirp was what he received in response. He hunkered back into the witcher’s cupped hands. The bird let out a series of chirps, only stopping when a soft, “Julian,” was let out from the man.
The bird tried to let out three notes, but didn’t like how it sounded. He tried again, and this time, it must have sounded better to his ear. On the last try, he let out the notes, and continued the phrase. It had a higher pitch, and it definitely wasn’t in, what the bard called, the right key. But the song was unmistakable. Toss A Coin both haunted Geralt and helped him. He would never admit it, but he will always be grateful for the outcome the song brought. His amber eyes were blown wide as he stared down at the man he had come to love in his hands.
“I-…” He had wanted to apologize. Wanted to ask him if he was ok, if he would let him help. If he would stay.
“Fuck.”
