The #1 song from 50 years ago was Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band". _______________________ We’re an American Band Songwriter: Don Brewer
Out on the road for forty days Last night in Little Rock put me in a haze Sweet, sweet Connie, doin' her act She had the whole show and that's a natural fact Up all night with Freddie King I got to tell you, poker's his thing Booze and ladies, keep me right As long as we can make it to the show tonight
We're an American band We're an American band We're comin' to your town We'll help you party it down We're an American band
Four young chiquitas in Omaha Waitin' for the band to return from the show Feelin' good, feelin' right, it's Saturday night The hotel detective, he was outta sight Now these fine ladies, they had a plan They was out to meet the boys in the band They said, "Come on dudes, let's get it on" And we proceeded to tear that hotel down
We're an American band We're an American band We're comin' to your town We'll help you party it down We're an American band
We're an American band We're an American band We're comin' to your town We'll help you party it down We're an American band
We're an American band We're an American band We're comin' to your town We'll help you party it down We're an American band
We're an American band We're an American band We're comin' to your town We'll help you party it down We're an American band
We're an American band, wooo We're an American band, wooo We're an American band, wooo

(337) Gimme5: Grand Funk Railroad
Disciples! Here we go – another Gimme5 for your listening pleasure, and with none other than Grand Funk Railroad to wrap up my (mostly) 70s run of artists alongside REO Speedwagon and Journey. Grand Funk was a band that rose quickly to fame only to come crashing down as the 70’s rolled on, so a different tale than those other bands mentioned. Also -Stay tuned for future contributions from…

The superstars of the previous eras mostly came back in the 90's for some reason and they stayed there since. Grand Funk Railroad, for instance, did return during the time, but they still have no new record to show. Pardon, they did do something as they – unwillingly – released a live album, titled Bosnia, but this is not them going in Sarajevo like U2, the concert they played was a benefit for the country. However, the renditions of their old songs – the disc is basically their best-of – do show a certain professionalism, which could be fine in small dosages, yet the thing can become nerve wracking. Then again, what would the best option for them be? The fact they're still a tour entity might be the best, because what would their album now even be?

Year-End Poll #1: 1950
Tumblr media
Kicking this project off with the first poll in the series by ranking the Billboard Top 10 Year-End singles from 1950. It will be another 8 years before the creation of Billboard's Hot 100 metric for charting popular music. The top songs were chosen based off of jukebox popularity, retail sales (both records and sheet music) and calculated via a survey Billboard Magazine would send out nationwide.

Grand Funk Railroad - Into the Sun.....one has to overlook the psychedelic scenes placed over the live performance from time to time. Here Mark Farner (Guitar/Singer) and Don Brewer (Drummer) are just 22, and Mel Schacher (bass) was 19, in the middle of the song where Mark uses the Wah Wah peddle that is the end of the original then the jamming begins which was the typical closer for the show in 70. Producer for the band was Terry Knight.

Brewer & Shipley’s Michael Brewer Dies at 80
Michael Brewer, one-half of the duo Brewer & Shipley, has died at 80, per a statement from the group.
No cause was given for the singer, songwriter and guitarist’s Dec. 17 death, but he been battling “multiple illnesses for the past three years,” the statement said.
“I will raise a glass to Michael and drink to all those years, all those miles, all those songs and all the heavenly audiences we played for,” Tom Shipley said in eulogizing his friend and musical partner of more than six decades.
Writing on social media, the Dillards publicly mourned their “dear friend for many, many years.
“(We) became very close to both Michael and Tom and we were proud to regularly cover their music,” the band said, citing “Food on the Table” and “Hearts Overflowing” as examples.
Best known for “One Toke over the Line,” Brewer & Shipley released nine albums and had their songs recorded by the Byrds, Don McLean, Stephen Stills, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and others.
Brewer was a “great talent,” the Dirt Band’s John McEuen said, “we were so sorry to hear of his passing.”
