kinktober day xx. LINGERIE – patricia 'kitten' braden
word count: ~800 tags: riding, slight overstim, multiple orgasms, birthday sex YAY masterlist | ao3
“God, sweetheart, look at you…”
You rise from the bed as you watch Kitten walk out of the bathroom, having donned her so-called ‘birthday surprise’ for you: a white babydoll with an empire waist, her natural silhouette shining through the translucent chiffon fabric. She paired the elegant garment with white nylons that came to rest perfectly mid-thigh, as well as a matching white thong that left very little to the imagination.
All in all, Kitten looked heavenly.
“Do you like it, sweetheart?” She spins on her heel, turning back to you with a coy smile dancing upon her red-stained lips. “You’ve always said I looked… what was it, angelic, when I wear white?”
You walk towards her, biting your lip slightly, “We both know how much of an angel you really are, though.”
Kitten hums as you begin to trace her barely-covered chest with your light touch, “I can be whatever you want me to be tonight, darling.”
“Then how about you lay on the bed for me,” you mouth at her jawline, causing her to shiver, “And let me ride you ‘til I’m content, yeah?”
With a quick nod, she makes her way to the bed, but not before you sneak a grab at her behind. Kitten only glances back at you with an accusatory squint– it wasn’t like she was going to cause a stink during your special birthday gift, now would she?
Kitten looks as you stalk towards her, crawling on the bed as you shed your undergarments. You watch as her chest heaves with each of your meticulous movements– she is just as eager as you. She spreads her legs slightly as you approach, and you bite your lip as her panties grow even more tight by the second.
Without a word, you pull them down Kitten’s long legs, and her hardness bobs up against her stomach. She continues to watch you through now-lidded eyes as you begin to straddle her– but not yet indulging in what you both knew was to come. You angle yourself back, and spread your lips open to grind against her length, evoking a sharp gasp from her throat.
“Oh, (Y/N), baby… don’t be such a tease, please!”
You pout, “Isn’t this your gift to me, sweetheart? I don’t think you’re in any place to tell me how to go about it claiming it, right?”
Kitten’s head falls back with a whimper as you circle her head around your entrance, but still not yet sinking down. You shudder as you coat her in your wetness, knowing you weren’t long to succumb to the pleasure of it all.
You suddenly press her inside of you in one swift movement, catching the both of you off-guard. Squeezing your eyes shut in a mix of pleasure and pain, you start to move your hips, “Kitten, fuck, you’re deep…”
She smiles as her hands come to rest at your waist, her nails scratching gently, “You feel so good, darling, taking me so well like always.”
You begin to ride her in earnest, lifting off her and moving back down– setting a pace she could barely keep up with. Moans spill from your lips as well as Kitten’s as she stretches you out perfectly. She looked divine with her blonde curls splayed against the pillow and her hands roaming where the two of your bodies continued to meet.
Her moans reached that familiar pitch– she was close.
“You gonna come for me, angel?” You leaned closer, causing her to whine even further as she met your gaze. “Gonna fill me up?”
“Please, honey, please!”
“Then fuck me like you need it, Kitten.”
She grips your hips tighter than ever, with one arm wrapping behind you to keep you against her chest as she starts to fuck up into you with a fervor like you’d never seen. Your eyes roll back as she hits that part inside of you again and again until you feel dizzy with pleasure. You hadn't even noticed that she had already come inside of you almost instantly with the way her rhythm never faltered– she kept fucking you until you fell apart in her arms.
“Come for me, sweet (Y/N), let me make you feel good.”
You bite down on the soft flesh of her shoulder as you feel that knot deep inside unfurl at her words, and she practically mewls at the perfect blend of overstimulation you were giving her. Kitten continues to hold you down as her hips stutter inside of you again– she came again.
The two of you catch your breath as you slowly ease off of her, the ache between your legs almost too much. You watch as her release spills from your entrance and shudder at the pure erotic nature of it all.
Kitten makes an attempt to fix her unkempt appearance, grinning at you widely, “Now, how about I clean that up for you, yeah?”

I just started The Gilded Age for Bertha and George and probably watch for them and gowns, beautiful gowns. Anyways any book rec where MC is obsessed with FC ? ( Like also my good boy Anthony B).
Yup! Like Anthony steals Kate's caps in the book and insistently sniffs her whenever she's around in the show, here are some obsessed hero recs.
Historical Recs:
The following Lisa Kleypas heroes:
Derek Craven from Dreaming of You: Immediate obsession, he steals Sara's glasses to keep as a token, has sex with a prostitute who he pretends is her even after he told her to leave him (the self-loathing with this one is real).
Kev Merripen from Seduce Me at Sunrise: Kev's one love/obsession since he was a boy was always Win, but he stayed away "for her own good" because he feels like his love would destroy her (both metaphorically and literally. as in his dick would.). It's hypothesized he'd poison himself if Win died during one of her childhood illnesses. He also has this insane(ly gorgeous) speech that he delivers very grimly(!) about his love for her.
McKenna from Again the Magic: He haaaaates that he's obsessed with Aline after everything that went down when they were separated, but literally the whole plot is that he hasn't gotten over her to the point where he wants *revenge* like a decade later, and that revenge mostly consists of him debauching her at various locations in Stony Cross Park.
Westcliff from It Happened One Autumn: He'd probably hate that he's included on this list because he prides himself on being a *rational* man, but when a rational man jumps his love interest multiple times even as he's apologizing for whatever's come over him, hea obsessed in my books.
Crispin from Duke of Depravity by Scarlett Scott: Man spends much of the book chasing after Jacinda, his sisters' governess, like a DOG, falls asleep on her tits after calling them "the finest bubbies in christendom", and repeatedly steals her fichus and smells them while jacking off.
Harrison from The Truth About Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden: The obsession takes a little longer to develop but once Harrison is gone, he's GONE. He has a fixation with her hands to the point where her flipping pages of a book makes him hard and he warns his friend off looking at her hands.
Dain from Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase: Another hero who hates how gone he is for the heroine but he literally can't get Jessica out of his mind to the point where he's shoving her against a lamp post (?) on a street and making out with her because he literally cannot control himself. I'm pretty sure he also has ptsd Eton hazing flashbacks solely because of her voice.
Lockwood from The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe: So Lockwood is a little more quietly obsessed with Nellie but what's notable is that the obsession on his end carries over three books before he finally makes his move. He's also very much the instigator of their affair.
Contemporary Recs:
Salvatore from The Don by Katrina Jackson: I remember Salvatore being literally so obsessed with Shay and it deffo gets more intense because she's pregnant with his child and there's a mafia plot going on.
Maxim from the All the King's Men duology by Kennedy Ryan: Obsessed, GONE for Lennix right off the bat, and you don't super expect the level of possessiveness (at least I didn't because he's a liberal and all enlightened and whatnot lolol) but it's there and it's honestly very hot. Listen, that tracker he secretly hid in her bracelet (?) paid off, ok.
Mateo from Lush Money by Angelina M. Lopez: Another hero who hates how obsessed he is from Roxanne especially since he's using her for money and she's using him for a baby but it's there and it's great.
Fausto from Mafia Mistress by Mila Finelli: Obsessed with Frankie to the point where he abandons the original plan of getting her engaged to his son and sleeps with her instead. Will also gift body parts of enemies as grovel gifts.
Enzo from Mafia Madman by Mila Finelli: I just think mafia romances in general are a great vehicle for writing super obsessed, mildly crazy heroes and Enzo is such a great example of that because he wants to break Gia at first (the way Fausto did to him) by kidnapping her and putting her in his yacht cage, but instead man's like, fully chasing her across his yacht and jumping her at every opportunity.
Sevastyan from The Professional by Kresley Cole: This one has a bit of a forbidden obsession aspect; Sevastyan is supposed to deliver Natalie to her mafiya dad in Russia, who is also his boss, but literally watches her masturbate (yes he was stalking her but it was the job) before kidnapping her out of a bathtub, chases her in a Nebraskan cornfield, and has sex with her even before their plane touches down.
Andrew from Sink or Swim by Tessa Bailey: Obsessed with Jiya since they were kids and his fantasies took on a particular flavor, he stays celibate for a number of years because he can't get it up with anyone but her after a certain point. He's also a service top so her wish is literally his command.
James from Rough Rhythm by Tessa Bailey: Shocking that Tessa Bailey uses to write shit like this buuuut James is Lita's band manager and after an initial (rough) sexual encounter when she was homeless and 18, she became a part of the band and James was the one who got her on birth control and kept all guys away from her (to the point of beating up a few??) until they finally have sex again a few years later.

Gregg Braden – Pure Human: Trials & Tribulations Within Two Timelines of...

We (subjective familiARITY of our subjective mind we confuse for reality: mythos)
always have a subjective (soul: habit behaviourism, neurolinguistic conditioning, epigenetic memory bricks)
shadows (of unseen UNfamiliarity of shared objective causal reality: logic ontological mathematics of universe, 🔍logos word of god)
whose individual (🔍Adult Development Robert Kegan, 🔍9 stages of ego development by susanne r cook-greuter, 🔍DTF and CDF by Otto Laske)
and collective (spiral dynamics)
integration
relates to Leibniz Monadologie as we
after birth we are naturally "falling" into our subjective emotional reality testing 🎶"Split half n half - Marr Grey"
intuitively guided by emotional affection that only over time via linguistic identity constructs evolves what we call "conscious mind".
Throughout all of history most insanities and avoidable suffering💸💉☠️💉💸 can be summed up as:
"Being vain" means to value any types of fictions or communication (🎶my dream - Akira the Don) or emotions more than focusing on all our shared touch with causal realities' relation (📚the god code gregg braden) with our globally most basic shared life needs which is the only realm where society, relations & care can exist - the shared communicative realm between our minds is only intended (authority) to somehow (social contracts) in some ways (desire) sometimes at least a little bit focus (motivation) on that touch via direct communication (authenticity), not as via grouped identity making🏟👏👏👏 infatuative (🔍brand love) vain🤡 err🤥😷😇 mean means in itself:
Whenever possibili-tease of needs of that causal touch💉 regarding all our CONTENT-me(a)nt🧠 are communicated, then our fictional realms have to prioritise
(to investigate and intrinsically motivated each other to dialectically solve)
that input at least a little bit more than any CONTENTs
[reputations, reward structures, self-justifications, social hierarchies, social concepts, attention streams, ideologies, desire to "win", storytelled "legacy", conceptual elitarian conceited in-group "kindness", ...]
of our shared fictional realms of 🔍daytrading attention gary vee.
Actually common sense, isn't it? But even if by lots of fictional status charged "holy" books are written about exactly that topic, still the dark force of Star wars - the dark triad & similar - simply, like we all, don't seem to grasp it because of perceptional filters that distort everything in our minds: 🎶public service announcement - S3RL.
They would even cite prophecies, $cientific definitions & fictions of media content like Bible or movies if it somehow relates to their vain identities like names, simply because EVERYTHING in our "decohered" minds is prioritised by our subjective "inner predictions" as explored by Free Energy Principle by Karl Friston which
(our mind, instincts and behaviourism)
always is a fiction that only strives to relate (mathematics, logic) to the One objective reality
which (abundance mindset)
we loose TOUCH with if we due overvaluation ("being VAIN") of our own mental prediction models
due unconscious fears of shame / humiliation / intolerated expression of anger of boundary defense / in memories storied Sasha Vaynerchuk slaps🍑👋 / reward-loss
(scarcity mindset)
ignore reality testings' playful #divineSparks✨️ ("open up" 🔍the celestine prophecy)
of enlightening insecuri-tease (🎥Dr Gabor mate authenticity vs attachement)
/ caring pre-diction (t)errors ("prediction errors" as mentioned in Free Energy Principle by Karl Friston)
/ loving s-elf doubts (📚"real love by Greg Baer" applied to 📚"shadow work by Carl Jung" also regarding 📚"mimetic theory by René Girard)
whose devaluation (🔍psychological repression and identity formation ... 🔍Quantum world "observers": 🔍the six blind men and the elephant)
by definition surfaces as IRONIC PROCESSES in relation to all our own and others' (socially entrained) psychotic mind constructs of attention streams🐟🐟🐟 which humour has evolved for to mimetically guide🥜👑🥜 to recalibrate ("Quantum world") the motivational and directional prioritisation🧭❤️🧭
of neurolinguistic pattern of these "decohered" spells via new🪄 spellings like a "Harry Potter" using 🎶"magic - coldplay" as #anothersel🐟moodboard: grace, self-irony, collective irony.
In essence, most of societies' troubles originate from the to 🎶"complicated - Avril Lavigne" via "fallen" th-oughts self-justifying stability of our minds and society inevitably needed mimetic repressions of people due various issues attached to social mind constructs💸🥇💸🏆💸
[🎵EVEN IF IT IS NOT WHAT YOU (believe) TO NEED (interplaying subjectivism and subjective relativism ... there is only objective causal reality and shared direct communication, our subjective stories are subjective relativism with different "needs", wants, emotional conditioning and different preferences and inherent biases of whom none are really "better" than those of others if free will is respected)]
like personas🤡
only using some aspects of and not freely like healty mother figures (and public authority figures should) do
without loosing PRESENCE👁 with all our causal touchs' life needs shared boundary defense💉☠️💉 [🎵SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN🧠 IF I TELL YOU TO GO FUCK YOURSELF? 🔍Dr Gabor mate about authenticity vs attachement & 🔍Dr Gabor mate about anger & boundaries]
using full spectrum (PLAYING) of mimetic emotions' communicative directional🧠👅🧠 dialectics' "fallen" inter-group
🎵AFFECTION - cigarettes after sex
in "spiritual" interplay with 🎶"brain - banks" thus not knowing how to feel while actually we all can theoretically as we all are born for this what makes life most liveworthy: 🎶What was I made for? - Billie Eilish

NHL Spectacle: Washington Capitals Face Off Against Detroit and Buffalo on Home Ice
The Washington Capitals are more than just a hockey team; they are a story of unwavering resilience and ultimate redemption. Founded in 1974, they have endured decades of highs and lows, but their journey to the summit of the NHL has been nothing short of extraordinary.
For years, the Capitals were defined by their regular-season success, consistently dominating but faltering in the playoffs. It was a narrative that haunted them until 2018 when they broke the spell and clinched their first Stanley Cup. That historic victory transformed them from perennial contenders to champions.
What sets the Capitals apart is their unwavering commitment to community and camaraderie. Players like Alex Ovechkin, known affectionately as "The Great Eight," have become not just hockey legends but integral parts of the Washington, D.C. community. Ovechkin's leadership, both on and off the ice, has endeared him to fans and inspired his teammates.
The team's style of play mirrors the spirit of their city: tenacious, unyielding, and always pushing forward. Their home games at the Capital One Arena are a testament to the passionate fan base that rallies behind them. The atmosphere is electric, a sea of red jerseys waving in unison, creating an unforgettable experience for fans and players alike.
The Capitals' journey has been marked by the indomitable spirit of their players, like Braden Holtby's miraculous "The Save" in the 2018 playoffs, which became an iconic moment in NHL history. It's about overcoming adversity, forging alliances on the ice, and representing the nation's capital with pride.
Washington Capitals Vs. Detroit Red Wings
In the heart of the Motor City, the Detroit Red Wings aren't just a hockey team; they're a symbol of the city's indomitable spirit. Established in 1926, the Red Wings boast an unparalleled legacy, with 11 Stanley Cup championships to their name. But their greatness isn't just measured in titles; it's etched into the very soul of Detroit.
From the "Production Line" of the 1950s, featuring Gordie Howe, to the "Russian Five" era with legends like Sergei Fedorov, the Red Wings have always been a team of innovation and excellence. Their commitment to development extends off the ice too, with community initiatives ingrained in their DNA.
Watch both the hockey giants go against each other at the Capital One Arena on September 28, 2023 at 7:00p.
Washington Capitals Vs. Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres have long been more than just an NHL franchise; they're a cherished symbol of the city's indomitable spirit. Since their debut in 1970, the Sabres have played a vital role in shaping Buffalo's identity, fusing the raw power of ice hockey with the city's unyielding determination.
Donning their distinctive blue and gold jerseys, the Sabres are an embodiment of Buffalo's resilience. The KeyBank Center, their home turf, transforms into a cauldron of hope and excitement on game nights. The thunderous cheers of their devoted fans, affectionately known as "Sabretooths," resonate far beyond the rink.
Watch both the hockey giants go against each other at the Capital One Arena on September 24, 2023 at 2:00p.

Consumer Guide / No.121 / Q & A with British singer, Maggie Moone with Mark Watkins.
MW: Obtaining maximum points from Mickie Most on New Faces is impressive! Tell me about that show and what was the immediate impact afterwards in terms of your showbiz career?
MM: Winning New Faces in 1977 was the first big break of my career as everything started happening after that. Televised “live” every Saturday night, the show was watched by millions including the biggest showbiz agents and music producers. It wasn't the lavish production you see now with X Factor, but it was a very exciting show and gave raw talent a chance to be seen and heard.
Mickie Most was the Simon Cowell of his day, and he along with Tony Hatch were two of the most brutally honest judges on the panel. Mickie gave me maximum marks and offered me a record deal. Mickie would have taken me in the rock direction and I often wonder whether I would have had a hit record with him. But in the end I got signed by Don Black and Geoff Stephens to record, ‘Dear Anyone’, a concept album. They also became my managers. It was an incredibly exciting time in my life.
MW: You've starred in so many TV programmes in the world of light-entertainment, in particular during the 80s and 90s following your Eurovision heats successes in 1980. I'll pick out just one TV show, Name That Tune. Tell me about your role in that, and how you prepared, including rehearsals and choosing wardrobe, plus any particular highlights…
MM: I had already appeared in many Thames Television shows, such as Mike Yarwood, Morecambe and Wise, Jim Davidson, Des O'Connor and Give Us A Clue, etc . I guess that put me in the right place at the right time at Thames when they were looking for the resident girl singer for Name That Tune.
It was a singer's dream and I remained with the show for nearly five years. We recorded a 20 week series in two weeks and for me that meant learning 60 sing-a-tunes and 60 reprises by ear as I don't read music plus I sang a solo song at the end of the show.
For every show, various dresses would be wheeled in for me to choose from and I didn't always like what was on offer. So I also used some of my own. Name That Tune reached nearly 17 million viewers at its height and we were all very sad when it was taken off the air.
The studio had a live audience for each show, hosted initially by the inimitable Tom O’Connor and then the ever-youthful Lionel Blair. We were like one big family and I had the luxury of singing with the wonderful Alan Braden Orchestra. Having a “live” band of 16 talented musicians made the show quite unique. We got to know some of the contestants before and after the show, and their music knowledge was amazing.
MW: Tell me about working with the man of many faces, impressionist Mike Yarwood...
MM: Mike Yarwood was a one-off! No-one could compete on his level really... such a talented man who could impersonate anyone. Mike was also a very kind and sensitive person and I loved working with him. Apart from singing on his show, I also did a Hart To Hart sketch with him as my looks were often compared to actress Stephanie Powers. It was my first acting job and we had a laugh recording that sketch. I am sad that he seemed to go off the radar very suddenly and we were deprived of his enormous talent.
MW: In 1989, Steve Wright was, like you, one of the guests on BBC One’s Blankety- Blank. Any specific memories of Steve (now on BBC Radio 2), and that show as a whole?
MM: Les Dawson made the show with his warmth and natural comedic style. He put everyone at ease and was one of those true show-biz greats. Blankety-Blank was a fun family show which also challenged your brain to think quickly. Celebrities across the board were keen to appear and of course I remember Steve Wright who was brilliant. I also well recall the wit of Giles Brandreth, Buster Merryfield, Samantha Fox, Lionel Blair as just a few of the great panelists. All with their own inimitable personalities which kept the banter with Les flowing at a fast pace.
MW: You have a magic "time travel" TV remote control, you can channel hop across years and decades. What programmes would you pause on and watch?
MM: You can’t beat those star-studded “live” TV shows from the Palladium and Piccadilly theatres aired on Saturday nights with the great Jimmy Tarbuck hosting. I well remember my terrible nerves standing there before the curtain rose … a full theatre house, plus 14 million viewers!! Apart from our own home-grown UK talent on the show, I had the pleasure of appearing with international stars such as Gloria Estefan, Tony Bennett and George Benson.
I miss the comedy of Eric & Ernie (Morecambe And Wise), Tommy Cooper, Frankie Howard etc. We watched their shows through the 70s, 80s and 90s and I wish they’d bring some of them back. I know tastes change, but they will be forever universally funny. And always clean.
I was an actress in Russ Abbott’s BBC series for three years and he was incredibly popular… a natural funny man. People would still laugh their heads off at him today! Bring him back!
Some of the sit-coms, such as Steptoe And Son, were also favourites of mine. Top Of The Pops was another that everyone tuned into; it’s important to give new talent a chance of being seen.
MW: What’s your favourite year for music?
MM: From my point of view, the whole of the 80s was a great decade; I don’t really have a favourite year as every year was just amazing from a career point of view.
I am sentimental and can cry buckets when hearing certain ballads such as the Everly Brothers' 'Let It Be Me'. My lovely mum suggested I sing 'Never, Never, Never' for my New Faces audition and so that's a special lucky song. Burt Bacharach's Dionne Warwick songs evoke wonderful memories of my teenage years. Frank Sinatra's 'All Or Nothing At All' gets to me big-time. But I also absolutely love soul, rock and funk! Wish I'd done more of that.
I love today’s music and as a fitness instructor I use a lot of club mixes of old songs. It’s amazing how contemporary these past hits can sound with a different treatment using tribal beats and funky house dynamics. I love all kinds of music!
MW: What's your connection to Poundbury? What do you think of this King Charles designed "village"?
MM: Well, my husband William and I live in Poundbury and since moving here it has grown into a lively thriving community. We now have more shops, more restaurants and pubs and you always see someone you know when you go out.
I think King Charles’ architectural ideas and skills are fantastic! Poundbury is unique. Hats off to him! Every house has its own individual style and no two are completely alike. We don’t have to worry about parking spaces here, and we also have a lot of green space to walk our two little dogs. It is the perfect place for bringing up a family and there’s nothing really not to like! Queen Mother Square is particularly stunning in architecture!
MW: Your memories of two greats, sadly, recently passed, Tony Bennett and Vince Hill..
MM: I have had the pleasure of working with both Tony Bennett and Vince Hill. Tony engaged me in conversation backstage at the London Palladium and he was such a personable and gentle personality… he had time for people, despite his huge success and that amazing voice instantly recognizable. Never a false note.
Vince had a great voice and was also modest despite his record success with ‘Edelweiss’. It’s sad that we haven't heard much about him in recent years.
But I think I am most sad at the passing of dear Michael Parkinson. He was the nicest man in show-biz and my personal favourite. He had a wonderful sense of humour and I don’t think there is a person alive who knew him that didn’t admire his talent and natural style as an interviewer, or love him for the down-to-earth person he was. He knew how to listen, which is the essential ingredient for all successful interviewers.
MW: Describe your ideal Saturday night out?
MM: I teach and participate in six fitness classes every week so am usually quite tired by the weekend - but never too tired to socialise with our closest friends. We are fortunate enough to have a fun circle of friends and we usually either go out together, or take it in turns hosting at each other’s homes at weekends. I love dinner parties and interesting conversation that’s fun. Having a sense of humour keeps you going.
MW: Looking back, how has fame and fortune treated you, and what have been some of the lessons learned?
MM: I can’t complain about anything. I was lucky enough to be given the chance to do something I love… entertaining! Of course, you see things from a different perspective as you get older and realise that you made wrong decisions and missed out here and there. When I was young, opportunities came to me easily, but I think if you are going to continue being successful, you need to be a bit ruthless and keep pushing yourself. I didn’t have that instinct.
I wish I had gone to America when the opportunities were there, and who knows how things would have turned out. I’m adventurous by nature, but for some reason I chose to stay with the familiarity of home and family. But no regrets really. Wherever you are, there is a whole world out there with so many interesting and fascinating people from all walks of life, and I have met many.
MW: Finally, any tips for upcoming singers…
MM: Listen to advice, but always go with your own instinct, which is usually right! Don’t be afraid of anyone or anything! Believe in yourself. You are unique. There is no-one like you, and so don’t try to imitate any other singer. Have your own style. Go for every opportunity and always be nice to people on the way up!

Domingo Germán of Yankees Proves Perfection Can Come at Any Time
In his first start of the 1956 World Series, Don Larsen could not complete two innings. He faced only 10 batters, and six reached base. By the time the game was over, the Brooklyn Dodgers had pelted the Yankees for 13 runs.In his next start, of course, Larsen authored a perfect game. Joe Trimble of The Daily News started his article on the performance this way: “The imperfect man pitched a perfect game.”Domingo Germán, the right-hander who joined Larsen, David Wells and David Cone on Wednesday by throwing the fourth perfect game in Yankees history, is imperfect, too. The setting for his gem — the crumbling Oakland Coliseum, home to the moribund Athletics — was hardly baseball paradise. The 11-0 victory ended after midnight in New York. But that’s the magic of the perfect game: It can happen to any pitcher at any time. Wells and Cone had 20-win seasons and made multiple All-Star teams; not so for Larsen or Germán. Two A’s have been perfect: One is a Hall of Famer, Catfish Hunter, and the other is a current Oakland broadcaster, Dallas Braden, who had a losing record for his career. The threadbare A’s are baseball’s worst team, already 40 games under .500, consumed by their vision of a new home in Las Vegas. Yet they have endured many dreadful seasons, and this was the first perfect game against the franchise since 1904, when Boston’s Cy Young did it to the Philadelphia Athletics. Their manager, Connie Mack — then only 42 years old — had more than half a lifetime left in the dugout, and he never saw another. When Larsen did it, the feat had not been accomplished since 1922, by a nondescript Chicago White Sox rookie named Charlie Robertson. The drought before Germán’s was not nearly as long, but it was significant: No pitcher had been perfect since Seattle’s Félix Hernández in August 2012.The 10 regular seasons in between (2013 through 2022) featured 22,765 imperfect games. Yu Darvish, Yusmeiro Petit and Max Scherzer each lost a bid when the 27th batter reached base. The Yankees’ Carlos Rodón — as a member of the White Sox in 2021 — lost his attempt when a slider nicked the top of a batter’s shoe in the ninth inning.“It really has to be your day,” Rodón said, reflecting on that game last summer. “You have to be on, they have to catch every ball, and you can’t hit anybody. There’s a luck element. It’s kind of like a lottery thing.”Like Larsen, Germán gave no warning he was about to hit the jackpot. He was booed off the mound in the Bronx last Thursday, pounded for 10 runs in three and a third innings against Seattle. The start before that, in Boston, Germán allowed seven runs in two innings. He spent part of May serving a suspension after umpires in Toronto found a sticky substance on his pitching hand. He served a much more serious suspension, for domestic violence, from mid-September 2019 through the shortened 2020 season that followed.Since then, the Yankees have never known quite what to do with Germán. He hinted at retirement in a cryptic social media post in 2020. Shoulder trouble cost him parts of the last two seasons. He was a depth piece before spring training, the sixth man in a five-man rotation, and chose a new uniform number: 0.Then injuries struck, and the Yankees had no choice but to sign up for Germán’s inconsistency every fifth game. One start he was giving up six runs to Minnesota, the next he was shutting out Cleveland into the ninth inning. He took the mound in Oakland on Wednesday with a 5.10 earned run average. He left it in triumph with the 24th perfect game in the history of Major League Baseball.Germán, 30, had never pitched a shutout in his 13 professional seasons. He had only one complete game, in the minors in 2017. But there he was, before a pro-Yankees crowd of 12,479 fans, flipping curve after curve — 51 times out of 99 pitches — for eight groundouts, nine strikeouts and 10 outs through the air.As usual for a perfect game, there was a defensive highlight. In the fifth inning, first baseman Anthony Rizzo dived for a backhanded grab of a smash down the line by Seth Brown, then flipped from his knees to Germán covering the bag. Nothing else would come close to a hit for the A’s.The biggest threat was a three-ball, one-strike count to Jonah Bride with two outs in the eighth. But Germán dropped in his curveball for a called strike, then another for a foul and another for an inning-ending groundout. That’s how it finished, too, when Esteury Ruiz tapped a curve to third baseman Josh Donaldson, who fired to Rizzo to certify the masterpiece. The Yankees’ four perfect games are the most by any franchise, breaking their tie with the White Sox. Seven teams have never been involved in one, including two — the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals — with histories that stretch to the 1800s. The Toronto Blue Jays have none, but their longtime ace, Roy Halladay, got one in his second month with a new team, the Philadelphia Phillies, in 2010.Germán is the first native of the Dominican Republic to throw a perfect game, a feat that painfully eluded Pedro Martinez in 1995. Martinez twirled nine perfect innings for Montreal in San Diego, but gave up a leadoff hit in the 10th inning. The Pirates’ Harvey Haddix, in Milwaukee in 1959, stayed perfect through 12 innings, only to lose his effort (and the game) in the 13th.And let’s not dwell on poor Armando Galarraga, who lost his perfect game in 2010 — ancient times, before replay — when the umpire Jim Joyce missed a call at first base on what should have been the final out.A night like Germán’s is an outlier to cherish forever, a reminder that perfection might actually be out there, waiting to surprise us — whoever we are.“We are all imperfect and flawed in one way or another,” Halladay’s widow, Brandy, said in her speech at his Hall of Fame ceremony in 2019. “We all struggle. But with hard work, humility and dedication, imperfect people can still have perfect moments.” Source link Read the full article
