Honorifics, pt. 2

The last time I wrote about honorifics, I ended on a note that I would talk about the Imperial Family. Where do I even begin? The best way to start is to explain that the Imperial Family in Japan has no surname, like the British Monarchy. You may ask while the Imperial Family of Japan have no surname, how are they addressed at school? It's similar to the way the British Monarchy enrolls their offspring. For example, Prince George of Wales is known as George Wales at his school. Princess Aiko in her school years, was known as Toshi-no-Miya. Toshi-no-miya or Princess Toshi as translated in English is her royal title, hence the surname she used at school. Prince Hisahito of Akishino is known as Akishino-no-Miya, cause he is a prince of the Akishino branch of the monarchy. However, when Prince Hisahito attended elementary school he was known as Hisahito-kun by this article here.

This title, for example, Toshi-no-miya or Princess Toshi, happens to be the form of address that the press uses when mentioning the members of the Imperial Family. The public addresses Princess Aiko differently. To many she is Aiko-sama. You will often see articles written about her. When they interview individuals, they usually address her as Aiko-sama as a term of respect.

Noting how the Japanese treat the Imperial family with politeness and respect when it comes to the Emperor and Empress, they are known as the Emperor and Empress. What is interesting about the Emperor is he only receives a name posthumously. Japan is currently in the Reiwa era. When the Emperor passes on he will be known as Emperor Reiwa.

How do you address a member of the Imperial Family? For an Imperial Prince or Princess, you use the honorific Denka. While the Emperor and Empress, you will use the honorific Heika. I plan on doing that throughout my fanfic.

You must be wondering how Tsukasa Domyoji fits into this. After all, he will be a prince in my story. When an Imperial Prince receives a title, it's deeply rooted in Japanese history. Princess Chiburu, whose memoir I've read in the past, states her husband's title is from the Chiburu mountains. I've decided to give Tsukasa the title of Prince Domoyji. I'm going to be honest with you, it's the easy choice since it was his surname in the manga series. I've also decided that I'm going to call him Prince Domoyji over Domoyji-no-miya for two reasons. It's more familiar to English speakers, and Domoyji-no-miya sounds like a mouthful.
