SDA stages MusiKaramay year 2
On its second year, the SDA MusiKaramay: A Digital Concert for a Cause remained as an opportunity to help as concert proceeds to benefit the Tahanang Siena, a home to elderly OP-Sisters and a celebration of the Dominican talent. “MusiKaramay won't be a success without the people behind it. I would like to thank our SDA Sisters in supporting our program, our hosts, our students, personnel and alumna performers, our audio and video editors, and to all the people who helped in making this event possible,” Ms. Marie Katherine B. Eusebio, School Nurse and Extension Services In-charge told the Onward Dominicans. More than 20 performances graced the two-hour benefit concert late Friday afternoon which showcased the talents of SDA students, personnel, and alumni.
“Napakatalented ng mga bata. Buti po pumayag sila na sumali kahit natatakot sila” (The students are very talented. Good that they said yes to join [the concert] even though they are nervous) Ms. Kimberly Ann D. Sato, MAPEH teacher and one of the MusiKaramay personnel performers, said in an interview.
Ms. Sato also admired those students who, despite their busy schedules and workloads, voluntarily took part in the benefit concert.
Tumblr media
“Kinakabahan daw po kasi sila kasi first time nung iba. They [students] were nervous since it was the first time for some [to perform]. I told them they are good performers so why would they be nervous? Look at it, it had a good outcome) she added.
Furthermore, for Ms. Lelaine Santos, MAPEH teacher and one of the personnel performers, apart from the usual enjoyment these events bring, MusiKaramay is also a two-fold program – showcasing the Dominican talent and at the same time helping people in need to feel the Yuletide spirit.
I am glad and I enjoyed watching the performances of students, alumni, and of the SDA personnel. It is nice that despite of the pandemic, we were still able to produce these kinds of programs to showcase the talents of Dominicans and at the same time we get to let others feel the Christmas spirit) Ms. Santos told OD in an interview.
Tumblr media
Mr. Erwin Calilap, English teacher and one of the personnel performers, said he shrugged off his fear as he looked into the greater picture of being able to help people in need. “I was so hesitant when Ms. Kath [Eusebio] informed us that we will perform again. But, when I realized that many people benefitted from the proceeds last year, I told her that I, together with Ms. Santos, will submit again a performance."
Mr. Calilap added that the bond among the performers strengthened while they create the MusiKaramay presentation.
"When we are collaborating with the other personnel, I really enjoyed the company. It is not difficult to work with the ones who performed. I can say that we really enjoyed while shooting videos and helping one another especially on the tones of the music we sang as a group. In the end, the program succeeded! Congrats, Dominicans! Another one-of-a-kind celebration of the talents that God has given us to nurture and [to] share with others!” Meanwhile, for Hugh Breian Aniag of 8-Fortitude, one of the student performers, his MusiKaramay experience, is a very remarkable one as he also enjoyed the event. “I am thankful for the opportunity. It was one-of-a-kind and a very unforgettable one”, Aniag said.
Tumblr media
Online viewers expressed appreciation of the benefit concert citing the admirable Dominican talent and the nostalgic feels from the music.
It's nice to see them po, pati po ‘yung mga teachers na noon ko lang po nakita at narinig na kumanta, to come out of their comfort zones. Ang nostalgic din po kasi ng mga songs” (My favorite part was the first performance which is the “Star ng Pasko”. I am glad that SDA freshmen were able to showcase their talents. It’s nice to see them as well as the teachers who I heard sing for the first time, to come out of their comfort zones. The songs too are nostalgic) one student told the Onward Dominicans.

Last year, MusiKaramay concert proceeds were able to help typhoon victims as well as street dwellers, and some uniformed personnel.

FROM BAILEN TO GENERAL AGUINALDO After visiting the churches of Amadeo and Mendez, my sister, my brother-in-law and I continued with our 2021 Tour of Cavite's Heritage Churches by visiting the church of General Aguinaldo. I thought General Aguinaldo was a town that was formed in the 20th century to honor Emilio Aguinaldo. Reading Dr. Emmanuel Franco Calairo's "Kasaysayan ng mga Bayan at Lungsod ng Cavite," I learned that General Aguinaldo was formed much earlier, and that it has an older name - Bailen. It was in 1858 when Bailen was formed from the barrios of Batas and Guyong-guyong, which used to be part of Maragondon. Calairo raised the idea that Bailen might have taken its name from the Spanish word, "bailar" (to dance). Another possibility, though, is that it was named after Bailén, a town in Jaén, Spain. It was only in 1965, after the enactment of Republic Act No. 4346 when Bailen was renamed General Aguinaldo to honor the first Philippine president. According to Calairo's "Mga Makasaysayang Simbahan sa Cavite," the parish of Bailen was separated from that of Maragondon in 1857. San José was its patron saint. Under the supervision of its first parish priest, Padre Baltazar Narvaez, the first church and convent of Bailen were built. There are two bells dated 1859 that are currently displayed outside the church. One is dedicated to San José; the other is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Nuestra Señora del Rosario is the patroness of the Dominicans, but Bailen was never under the Dominicans. However, nearby towns, such as Alfonso, Indang and Mendez-Nuñez were under the Dominicans, so devotion to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario must have reached Bailen. The administration of the parish was turned over from the secular clergy to the Augustinian Recollects. Calairo did not mention the specific year, but it must have been in 1860, the year when the Augustinian Recollects took over the parish of Maragondon. The church and the convent burned down during the revolution against Spain. For several years, it had no parish priest of its own. #captivatingcavite #thetimetrekker https://www.instagram.com/p/CYSPtnkB-K8/?utm_medium=tumblr

Baguio City Experience
Tumblr media
Kilala ang Baguio City bilang “The Summer Capital of the Philippines” dahil sa taglay nitong lamig.
Tumblr media
Sta. Catalina Spirituality Center
Matatagpuan ang Sta. Catalina Spirituality Center sa 20 Marcos Hi-way, Baguio City 2600.
Tumblr media
The Mansion
Ang The Mansion ay matatagpuan sa  Leonard Wood Road, Baguio 2600. Ito ay ginawa noong 1908 upang magsilbing  official summer residence of U.S. Governors-General.
Tumblr media
Mayroon itong napakagandang disenyo na gate.
Tumblr media

BRIEF SUMMARY ABOUT THE UNITED NATIONS
Guiding Questions :
1. History and General Profile
2. Meetings
3. Main Organs
4. Membership
26 negara tersebut adalah United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, China, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Poland, Union of South Africa, and Yugoslavia.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao: Thoughts
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Junot Díaz)
Tumblr media
What a unique book. Junot Díaz’s voice alternates somewhere between poetry and crassitude, and his characters similarly waver between the realm of science fiction and the all-too-genuine fickleness of reality. I remember my dad bringing this book home for World Book Night back when I was a sophomore in high school; it took me five years to sit down and finally read it.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao almost feels physical in its structure, its descriptions, and its hard-hitting, brutal-yet-flippant style. The characters are entrancing. They’re not likable to me, not in the normal sense—but they’re understandable and real. Díaz generously sprinkles in footnotes, painting for us in broad strokes the past atrocities of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. I love the casual interjections of Spanish colloquialisms, the general sense of which I could mostly grasp, even though my Spanish is by no means up to par. If I had to pick one word to describe this book, it would be: rich. Rich with language, rich with a country’s history and with characters’ repeated histories, rich with stories and the supernatural and rich with life.
Here are some excerpts that particularly struck me:
A beautiful description from Lola, about her relationship with her mother: “But she just stood there shaking, in her stupid wig and her stupid bata, with two huge foam prostheses in her bra, the smell of burning wig all around us. I almost felt sorry for her. This is how you treat your mother? she cried. And if I could have I would have broken the entire length of my life across her face, but instead I screamed back, And this is how you treat your daughter?”
On how easy it is to love even someone who has committed atrocities: “On the other hand, he was tormented by his crimes. When he drank too much, and that was often, he would mutter things like, If you only knew the diabluras I’ve committed, you wouldn’t be here right now. And on some nights she would wake up to him crying. I didn’t mean to do it! I didn’t mean it! And it was on one of those nights, while she cradled his head and brushed away his tears, that she realized with a start that she loved this Gangster.” (This reminded me of this excerpt from The Handmaid’s Tale):  “He was not a monster, she said. People say he was a monster, but he was not one. What could she have been thinking about? Not much, I guess; not back then, not at the time. She was thinking about how not to think. The times were abnormal. She took pride in her appearance. She did not believe he was a monster. He was not a monster, to her. Probably he had some endearing trait: he whistled, off key, in the shower, he had a yen for truffles, he called his dog Liebchen and made it sit up for little pieces of raw steak. How easy it is to invent a humanity, for anyone at all. What an available temptation. A big child, she would have said to herself. Her heart would have melted, she’d have smoothed the hair back from his forehead, kissed him on the ear, and not just to get something out of him either. The instinct to soothe, to make it better. There there, she’d say, as he woke from a nightmare. Things are so hard for you. All this she would have believed, because otherwise how could she have kept on living? She was very ordinary, under that beauty. She believed in decency, she was nice to the Jewish maid, or nice enough, nicer than she needed to be.”
A beautiful comparison to Eden: “A month before it all blew up, the Gangster took Beli on a vacation to his old haunts in Samaná. Their first real trip together, a peace offering prompted by a particularly long absence, a promissory note for future trips abroad. For those capitaleños who never leave the 27 de Febrero or who think Güaley is the Center of the Universe: Samaná es una chulería. One of the authors of the King James Bible traveled the Caribbean, and I often think that it was a place like Samaná that was on his mind when he sat down to pen the Eden chapters. For Eden it was, a blessed meridian where mar and sol and green have forged their union and produced a stubborn people that no amount of highfalutin prose can generalize.”
The book is scattered with science fiction and fantasy references that were amazingly well-integrated:  “A great darkness descended on the Island and for the third time since the rise of Fidel people were being rounded up by Trujillo’s son, Ramfis, and a good plenty were sacrificed in the most depraved fashion imaginable, the orgy of terror funeral goods for the father from the son. Even a woman as potent as La Inca, who with the elvish ring of her will had forged within Baní her own personal Lothlórien, knew that she could not protect the girl against a direct assault from the Eye.”
Lola, on the dread of the first judging glance from her mother: “And then the big moment, the one every daughter dreads. My mother looking me over. I’d never been in better shape, never felt more beautiful and desirable in my life, and what does the bitch say? Coño, pero tú sí eres fea. Those fourteen months—gone. Like they’d never happened.”
Oscar, on fear taking over regardless of how we think we’d act in our imagination: “While they argued with the colmado owner about prices, Oscar thought about escaping, thought about jumping out of the car and running down the street, screaming, but he couldn’t do it. Fear is the mind killer, he chanted in his head, but he couldn’t force himself to act. They had guns!”
Yunior, on not ending up with the woman he values the most: “Before all hope died I used to have this stupid dream that shit could be saved, that we would be in bed together like the old times, with the fan on, the smoke from our weed drifting above us, and I’d finally try to say words that could have saved us. ______ ______ ______. But before I can shape the vowels I wake up. My face is wet, and that’s how you know it’s never going to come true.  Never, ever. It ain’t too bad, though. During our run-ins we smile, we laugh, we take turns saying her daughter’s name. I never ask if her daughter has started to dream. I never mention our past. All we ever talk about is Oscar.”
