Höschs Arbeiten wurden international gezeigt, u.a.: Nakanojō Biennale, Nhà San Collective, Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival und FrauenFilmTage Wien.
Dramaturg*in: Helin Celik

A minha mãe. As mães.

September brings the first edition of the Pristina Queer Festival in the latest challenge to stereotyping and stigma.
After two big cultural festivals in Kosovo – Anibar animation festival in Peja/Pec and Dokufest in Prizren – dedicated parts of their programme to queer culture and tackling homophobia, it’s the capital’s turn in September with the first ever Pristina Queer Festival.
Beginning on Friday, the three-day festival is the latest to challenge stereotypes and stigma surrounding sexual and gender identity in Kosovo.
The festival, which aspires to become an annual event, will include film and documentary screenings, concerts, and a promotional event for an Albanian-language text on transgender people in Kosovo before and after the 1998-99 war, part of the 2022 book Transgender in Post Yugoslav Space – Lives, Activisms, Culture.
Donjeta Mejtani, a Kosovo-based human rights activist and part of the queer rights NGO Dylberizm, one of the organisers of the festival alongside the queer collective Hyjneshat, said the queer movement in Kosovo was “doing well” and that Pristina had become a “vibrant centre in the Western Balkans”.
“However, we felt that the next step for the queer movement would be to have a festival in Pristina, for the entire queer community that will include queer artists and queer content,” Mejtani told BIRN.
“Hopefully it will grow and help society see that, in accepting each other, we do not lose or risk traditional values because hatred does not serve us and has no value in the society.”
‘High expectations’
Staging such an event does not come without certain challenges. Even the documentary film festival Dokufest, arguably the biggest annual cultural event in Kosovo, faced a protest organised by the local Islamic Community after it hosted a concert by the Canadian feminist electro-pop artist Peaches, an LGBT cultural icon.
Mejtani said that some performers or participants invited to the Pristina Queer Festival were reluctant to take part.
“We did face homophobia; some persons whom we wanted to invite as performers or participants of the festival refused the invitation, not necessarily due to their own homophobia but because they knew how joining the festival could affect their public image and profession even if they were not part of the LGBT community,” Mejtani said.
“There are high expectations but we are still happy enough to have been able to create a good, free programme for the first edition.”
“Like at the Pride Parade there will be people who will be reluctant to join but we have to emphasise that everyone is welcome and not only queer persons.”
“Queer people are very creative and have given a lot to art and culture throughout the world. Art is one of the best mechanisms for us to survive as human beings and queers living in a closed society need to find within themselves a way to cope.”
One of the goals of the Dylberizm is “to promote queer culture and tell the society that we are here”, Mejtani said. “Many people don’t realise that queer persons live among us; due to stereotypes, queer persons are over-sexualised and undermined.”
That’s why the NGO was named Dylberizm, Mejtani said, from the Albanian word ‘Dylber’. Besides being used as a slang term for homosexuality, Dylber can be found in many works of folklore.
“Using this word we explain that queer people have always been present and especially in art, they have also written well known songs,” Mejtani told BIRN.

Summer in Prizren is pretty amazing I’d say. Besides rich culture, lovely people and amazing food for an incredibly low price, another reason to visit Prizren is Dokufest, which is an international short film festival held in the heart of Prizren. Dokufest starts in August and it usually lasts for about 12 days. There are multiple stages airing films every night and one of them is up in the Prizren fortress where the entire city can be seen from above. Besides films, there is also a music festival which is also a part of the Doku organisation. Dokufest was established in 2002. and has become one of the biggest film festivals in Balkan over the past years. Because of it’s amazing atmosphere this film festival is counting more and more international visitors every year.

I dobijem akreditaciju. I sednem u futuristički autobus.

Cena — 1€.

— To ti poklanjam.
Razmenjujemo vizitke. Obećavamo kafe kad me drugi neki put nanese u Prizren. On je tu, u knjižari, kaže.

— Hello, da li govorite ovaj jezik?
— Malo.
Uz odmah-glavom-i-sleg-ramenima kombo, uputi me na jedini primerak romana Derviš i smrt.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Tumblr media
  Autorka fotografije: Katarina Kostić
A šta deca čitaju, onako, najviše?
Gde vam stoji Hari Poter?
Obe nas pozdravi srdačno, ljubi u obraze, dvaput, nudi kafu.
