Breaking hiatus a moment because Chirp's 13 birds need to find foster homes by the first of July.
Copied from the message:
"Hey can you think of anyone who would be able to foster a dozen pigeons temporarily? I need to find someone by the first of July, I'm getting kicked off my farm"
"I can cover the cost of shipping and I don't anticipate it would be for longer than a year. It's 6 bonded pairs plus one Jim, so 13 birds total actually. GLPR is overwhelmed and can't help and there's no way I'm going through palomacy."
"FOSTER ONLY Beatrice & Boki:
Beatrice is a rescued German beauty homer hailing all the way from Washington state. She was found in a parking lot, struggling to stand and showing signs of PMV. We don't know where she came from or how she got to where she was, I'm guessing after showing signs of PMV her breeder discarded her. She was taken in by my friend who rehabilitated her until she could be shipped to me in NY. She made a splendid recovery. Beatrice is a very kind hearted bird, but she's no pushover and likes to be high ranking in a flock. She's friendly and confident around humans.
Bea is married to a Russian tumbler cock named Boki who she picked out during her stay at another loft. He's a silly little dude and very social. Boki is incredibly devoted to his wife. They had a healthy, beautiful son together (who now lives happily with a friend). They'd be a wonderful pair for someone who is new to pigeons to foster and try out keeping pigeons. They tolerate confinement and are very easy going and socialable. The one downside is, while they're totally healthy, they should be monitored closely for health issues. Both have a tendency to get poop stuck to their butt feathers and are more susceptible to illness. Beatrice benefits from having her legs (which tend to get try and calloused) and large nares lotioned with coconut oil if she is being kept indoors.
FOSTER ONLY Yuki & Alice:
Group shot at the end
My oldest pair! Yuki was a lost racing homer found by a wildlife rehabber in Rochester, NY. She's solid white and very beautiful. The lovely lady who rescued her got her healthy and then gave her to me so she could be safe in an aviary with other pigeons. She won't land on me, but is very eager to socialize, take treats, and spend time together. She gets my attention if she wants fresh water or more food.
Alice is a dog training survivor that showed up not long after Yuki arrived here. He's a big mostly white pied fellow, boisterous and very flashy. He's not terribly friendly, but is often willing to wrestle and occasionally take his very favorite treats from my hand. His sole reason for living is Yuki, he is so devoted to her! They've had several children together and are so easy to manage. Very healthy. They are high energy and used to having space to fly, but I suspect they would adapt to an indoor lifestyle no problem so long as they have each other. They would be good for a beginner that doesn't mind having hands-off pigeon friends, but wants something bullet proof and robust. These guys don't get sick, they are tolerant of both heat and cold, and don't stress easy.
ADOPT OR FOSTER Skippy & Belva
Belva was an oops baby hatched here out of Carrie. She's a bit of a scruffy little blue checked feral, and very shy, sometimes I worry that she's gone missing but she just is REALLY good at being wherever I'm not when I'm checking on the pigeons. She's timid and tiny.
Her spouse is a suspected hen named Skippy. Skippy was rescued as a squab by my friend in NYC. He briefly partnered with Pitch, a hen out of Dani's lines, while he lived with my friend. He came here to live out his days. He's a funky dude! He looks like a blue checked feral defending from tumblers as he has very short little legs. Skippy is reasonably friendly when his wife is setting but if she's up and active then he has a tendency to become very skittish. These two are very much hands off. I wouldn't advise them for a beginner simply because they are difficult to catch and keep track of their health, though they haven't been sick. They would likely not thrive in a home environment and would be best kept in an aviary.
ADOPT OR FOSTER Freddy & Roy
Group shot at the end
Freddy, formally known as Frito, is a cock out of Dani Ramsey's lines. He's a very striking bird and pretty friendly. He'll land on my shoulder in order to take safflower and will even give my ear kisses if he's waiting for me to get the safflower out of my pocket. It took him a long time to settle down and he isn't trusting of anyone other than me, it takes him a long time to learn that new people are okay.
Freddy is married to Roy, an oops baby and Belva's sister. They aren't terribly attached to one another and tend to flirt with anyone and everyone they can, both Roy and Freddy's favorite fling being Skippy. Roy won't eat out of my hand but she will sit calmly and approach me in the aviary, she doesn't tend to panic if I reach for her. She's a beautiful dark blue with white speckles on her chest. I think these two would adapt to house life, but would be most content in an aviary or loft, particularly one where they'd get to stay with Skippy and Belva as the four birds are very good friends.
ADOPT OR FOSTER Priscilla & Fiona
Despite their names, these two are not hens but both very sassy cocks! Fiona is a rescue feral from Dani Ramsey, he was initially suspected to be a hen but as it turns out he is a very dainty little man! He is full of rage and wants to fight anyone and everyone. He seems incapable of accepting treats or landing on me without biting or slapping, but he's so tiny and cute that I could never be bothered by this.
To my surprise Fiona hooked up with Priscilla, a big white oops baby out of Yuki and Alice. Priscilla is tempered just like his little husband, but bigger and even meaner! Priscilla is also an escape artist, every so often he likes to slip out of the aviary and fly around loose, the bastard! The only one of my pigeons to do this. Luckily, he always comes right back and waits patiently on the door for me to let him in. It amazes me that despite how sassy these boys are, they are so loving and gentle with each other. I rarely see them driving one another and instead they spend most of their time cuddling in the nest, waiting for me to offer them a fake egg to care for. I have no doubt they'd be wonderful foster parents. They would be good house pigeons for anyone, but better suited for an experienced keeper if you intend to keep them in an aviary or loft with a flock given Priscilla's habit of escaping and both their attitudes (they LOVE causing trouble in a flock).
FOSTER ONLY Danny & Carrie
Group shot below
Carrie is my first oops baby, out of my first rescues, Oliver and Piper. She used to be shy but has become more confident in recent years. She won't take food from my hands but does like to hang out and converse with me, cooing quietly when I speak to her.
Her long time lover is Danny, who I am 99% certain is a hen but there's a small chance she could be a cock, she acts like a cock but I've had 4 eggs in her and Carrie's nest so I've always assumed she was a hen. Danny was rescued from under a bridge by my friends in Syracuse when she was just a squab. She had a nasty respiratory infection that took a while for me to treat. She has what seems to be allergies in spring and is prone to respiratory distress, she also is susceptible to coccidia and worms so one must monitor her health closely. Danny is sassy and while she is shy of hands, she does love to interact with me by cooing and dancing when I talk to her. Danny and Carrie should go to an experienced keeper that can monitor Danny's health.
ADOPTION Jim
Jim sure is a pigeon and he hates me! Jim was rescued from a hoarding situation, and his rescuer gave him to me because he didn't apparently get along with their pair of pigeons, I feel like maybe they actually just couldn't stand him anymore. He lives in my room currently and is my nemesis. He is married to my voorburg, but she prefers me over him and does not like hanging out with him, he really needs a mate or person of his own. Jim is VERY sociable and prefers being in a cage, he will active choose to be in a cage rather than free roaming in my room. He is very good at communicating and will loudly let me know if he wants more food or fresh water, and also that he despises my existence. His favorite hobbies include being a dad (he and the voorburg had two kids!), landing on my shoulder to study what I'm doing before wing slapping my face and flying away, landing on my shoulder to poop on me, wing slapping me while I'm trying to nap, wing slapping me until I give him more safflower, and wing slapping me to ask for scritches. No, I don't know why Jim always chooses violence. He could probably be taught manners. Jim is absurdly dense and I would describe him as an onion made out of lead. He is bad at flying and frequently misses landing on my shoulder and instead smacks directly into my face. On one side he has cute little freckles on his face, on the other side he has an angry eyebrow which is the side that he always has facing me. He is perpetually missing two feathers on his tail even after he molts, it's important to make fun of him for this and say he looks lopsided and ridiculous. Jim would be great for a beginner who wants a single house pigeon or to pair with their current pigeon. Really, he is a wonderful and charismatic pigeon who would be sure to make the right person laugh and love him, but you have to have a good sense of humor with this angry little onion.
Roy and Danny
Carrie and Skippy
Fiona, Priscilla, Yuki, Alice, Skippy, and Freddy"
As you all know, The Ramsey Loft is still closed, waiting on the broad spectrum viral panel results.
(I think it's been 4 weeks now? It's honestly all just bleeding together, but I *think* we should hear back next week or the week after?)
Until we hear that it's for sure safe, no birds can leave and no new birds can come in.
So I'm not able to offer to foster any at this time.
Please contact Chirp directly by email via [email protected]

Hey!! Thanks for the update on TSOHL, I'd love to get on the taglist! Also: Whumpee talks to someone on an online app, only to eventually call them.. That someone is whumpee's whumper. -sol
A dialogue prompt for @broken-horn. Obviously, the events below that take place after Hanna escapes Conner’s possession. TBH I really had no idea where to take this prompt, and writing it took a while because I couldn’t figure out how it needed to end. You had me stumped! Thank you for the prompt and feel free to SEND ME MORE in the future!
Tag List: @bloodandbandages, @broken-horn, @eatyourdamnpears, @butwhatifyouwrite. If anyone wants to be added to the list or removed, contact me.
Anon: 51 Depot Street Verona NH, 13874
The first time Hanna is contacted by Anon she assumes the message was sent to the wrong person. She doesn’t give the message any more thought and she goes about her day.
Two weeks pass and Hanna gets a second message. This one reading:
Anon: 5961 Caravan Drive Troy WA, 95832
Her gut churns and she delete the message quickly with an unsettling feeling in her gut. Recalling how the same thing happened two weeks before, she contacts Anon, informs them that they have the wrong username, and deletes the message.
The third message comes two days later:
Anon: 7390 Apt 34 LeeHigh Ave Monroe AZ, 29402
Irritated, Hanna blocks Anon but keeps wondering about the messages through out the day.
Two morning after Hanna wakes peacefully tucked underneath Zeros warm body, who is still soundly sleeping in their bed. Its the weekend so shes sleeping in. She checks her phone for the time sleepily, and in the process of doing so she sees she has six new messages from the website. She oppens the platform and then her inbox, and this is what she finds.:
Anon: 8374 Murray Lane Manchester OH, 14890
Anon: 3801 Jacob Street Ontario MT, 25920
Anon: 5039 Fleming Ave Newcomb VT, 49013
Anon: 8027 Plank Road Rochester NY, 12983
Anon: 7480 Old Military Road Penfield FL, 71693
Then . . .
Anon: Hello Hanna.
Hanna tells the Big Six about Anon later that day and as a group, they decide to have Hanna remove herself from the site and have Tyler monitor it in her place. Tyler spends the next two weeks checking the chat room and nearly everyday he receives a new message. He tries hacking into the system to determine the location of the sender, but whoever it was was operating on a secure, and unfortunatly untraceable, network. With no other leads, he researches the addresses that he has recieved so far. After several hours he determines that nearly every adress was the home adress to a well-known or wealthy individual, such as politicians, celebrities, and businesspeople.
At the end of the two weeks Tyler logs into the server and enters the chat room, only to instantly receive two new messages.
Anon: 893-502-3018.
Anon: We need to talk.
Tyler’s glasses reflect the glow of the computer screen in the dark room and the Omega sits in his chair still and supprised. The green halo around Anon’s unassigned avatar indicates that he’s still online, so Tyler gets to work. His hands fly up to the keyboard and while impersonating Hanna, he quickly responds.
Hanna: Who is this?
The message sends and three floating dots appear in Anon’s chat box.
Anon: A friend.
Hanna: Who. Is. This?
Anon: A friend.
This wasn’t going anywhere. Tyler tries a new approach.
Hanna: Why are you sending me these addresses? What do they mean?
He types the message quickly and hits send.
Anon: They’re gifts. Presents for my love.
‘What the fuck?’ Tyler thinks to himself. There’s a momentary break before Tyler receives two more messages.
Anon: They’re locations of Omegas.
Anon: Current locations of Omegas.
That’s all Tyler needs. He logs off and races off to get the others.
The a small team of Omegas spend the next week traveling to the nearest location that had been provided to them, staking out the building, infiltrating the building, and traveling back to Safe Have. The mission wasn’t easy, but Anon hadn’t disappointed them. In the end the team arrives home with five new Omegas who are beaten, bruised, scared, and malnourished. Upon arrival Hanna meet them at the entrace and immediatly sends the injued and the new arrivals to the infirmary with Jayden to receive medical attention.
“So, the intell was accurate.” Hanna says to Zero as they walk back to their shared room.
He nodds. “You think its a spy on the inside of the Slave Market?”
Hanna chews on the inside of her lip. “She had considered the possibility, and though part of her hopes thats whats was going on, the other part of her is skeptical. They needed to contact Anon.
Later in the afternoon the Big Six gather inside of the office. Madison, Jayden, Zero, Tyler, and Hanna, all stand around the island in the center of the room and hold their breath as Madison calls Anon.
He picks up on the fourth ring.
“Hello?” He says.
“We got the Omegas.” Madison says sharply and straight to the point. “Now tell us who you are.”
“I want to speak to Hanna.”
“This is Hanna.”
“No. Your not. You’re Madison. Now, Madison, hand me over to Hanna. I know she’s there.”
Madison pulls the phone away from her face and she covers the microphone with the palm of her hand. “He called my bluff.” She says irritated. She turns to Hanna. “He wants to talk to you. Do you want to take it or should I tell him to fuck off?”
Hanna has her palms pressed into the edge of the desk and she’s leaning against the peice of furniture with all her weight. She looks at the phone that Madison holds out to her, before taking it, putting it on speaker phone, and placing it down on the counter before her.
“This is Hanna. Who is this?” Hanna says.
There's the sound shuffling on the other end, followed by a smooth male voice. “Hello Hanna.”
Zero is marching up to Hanna and she knows that he’s going for the phone. She holds a hand up to Zero and stops him in his tracks.
Of course it was him. It all made sense now.
“I missed you Hanna. How have you been?”
Hanna’s stomach clenches and she grips the edge of the desk tightly. “Well to be honest I was doing great right up untill five fucking seconds ago.”
Conner grumbles on the other end. “Such a filthy mouth you have there Hanna. I see your set back in your old ways. Pity. I had you behaving so well for me before you left.”
“You mean before I escaped?” Hanna snarls.
“No, actually, I do mean left. What else do you call it when your lover walks out in the middle of having sex, and leaves you inebriates and tied to a bed?” He chuckles to himself and he sounds unhinged. “I knew you were a vixen Hanna but damn - - that was criminal.”
Hannas ears flush and suddenly she wishes that fifteen year old Jayden had been excluded from this meeting. “We were never lovers.”
“No?”
"No.” Her voice is as unyielding and cold as steel.
Another pause. “Well, I guess I underestimated you Hanna. Your acting abilities had me fooled. It felt real to me.”
Anger and a practiced speech boils in her chest. She knew one day she would be able to say these words to Conner, but she hadn’t known when. “Your delusion was your downfall.” She says. “You thought you had me wrapped around your finger, trained and obedient like some sort of dog, but you were wrong.” She smirks and it can be heard in her voice. “The whole time I was the one that had you wrapped around my finger. I tugged on your heartstrings and did what you wanted because I knew, one day, you would let your guard down, and I would be free. I never belonged to you. Not for a single god damn moment.”
There’s a long strech of silence on his end and everyone but Hanna and Zero start to wonder if he’s still there.
“Very well then.” He sighs. “I’ll be seeing you soon Hanna, and until then, take care of yourself.” Another pause. Then, “I want you in prime condition when I come to collect what is rightfully mine.”

#TSOHL#either Jayen was going to die in this chapter or Connor was going to give Hanna a wedding ring#clearly neither of those two things happened

That is, the dog must pay attention to the dog or person performing the modelled behavior; retain the information gathered about the behavior during the observation; be motivated to reproduce the behavior in a time and place removed from the original; and finally, produce the behavior, or some reasonable facsimile thereof.[53] ^ Jump up to: a b c Miller, Pat (July 2004). “Young Dogs Can Learn From Older Well-Behaved Dogs”. Fun & Awkward with Natalie Leroux
Designer & Illustrator
www.studioeightyseven.com
Natalie Leroux is the creative behind Studio Eighty Seven, a design studio located in Grafton, MA helping small businesses and entrepreneurs develop their brand and marketing.
Recently, we got a chance to interview Natalie about her work and her line of greeting cards aptly named “Fun & Awkward”.
Where were you brought up?
I was born in Massachusetts but moved to upstate New York when I was young.
Where did you get your formal art education and what was the most influential thing about it?
When I graduated from High School I wasn’t ready to give up athletics and go to art school. Instead, I went to the University of Rochester where I played field hockey for a year, and studied studio art and art history. During my Sophomore year at the University of Rochester, I entered a program called Art NY - which was like a study abroad program in NYC. Myself, and a small group of UR students had internships, and took two classes with a UR professor. After interviewing with small marketing firms and big publishing houses, I accepted a position with a commercial photographer. The experience at the internship, and the advice and friendship from the studio manager, a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, I realized I was not getting the type of technical training at the University of Rochester that I was looking for. As luck would have it, one of the best graphic design schools in the country, RIT, was right down the road from the University of Rochester, making for an easy transition. . Looking at the descriptions for graphic design courses and typography at RIT convinced me to focus on graphic design. RIT was an amazing school. They really prepared me and other graduates for the real world in art and design.
How did you break into designing in Boston?
With extended family and friends in Massachusetts, moving to Boston after graduation was easy. It took awhile for me to land a job in Boston. But I got involved with the local AIGA chapter, and volunteered for events. I also got involved with Design Museum Boston. Overall, the the design community in Boston was welcoming.
I eventually landed a job as an entry level designer at a small, niche advertising agency. The hours were long, but I was eager to prove myself. I stayed with the agency for 6 years, and by the time I left I was the Creative Director managing some of Boston’s best young designers. My personality is one of a leader, and being a young impressionable manager I found it more challenging than I expected to balance the needs of the individual talent on the team, and the business demands of a growing agency. I left the agency in October of 2016 to pursue my own creative and business endeavors.
What are your artistic influences?
In the past I would say I was heavily influenced by Pop Art. I had a 8’ x 10’ poste rof a Roy Lichtenstein piece on my wall in college. I was really drawn to the contextual history during that time, and the combination of type and image interested me. Now, I find myself inspired by ephemera. Since I was young I spent a lot of time in antique stores and was always drawn to the boxes of old ticket stubs, postcards, and play bills.
Recently, I was working on a wedding invitation suite, and was checking out vintage baseball cards and ticket stubs for inspiration.I love the 1960′s self published zines, and am drawn to 1970′s design, typography, and illustration.
Recently, I am finding inspiring artists and designers from Australia and New Zealand on Instagram.
What are your thoughts on DESIGN?
I find that a lot of small business owners have a vague understanding what branding is, and why it’s important, but have a hard time coming to terms with the value of a professional. It can be frustrating trying to compete with internet sites that offer cheap alternatives to thoughtful, conceptual design solutions. I spend a lot of time educating clients and communicating the value of what I, and other professionals, have to offer.
Unlike household brands, small businesses have flexibility to shake up their brands visually. With a lot of small businesses living solely online, it’s easier to erase what is there and start over. The screen can be ephemeral.
What are your thoughts about Illustration?
I didn’t consider myself an illustrator for a long time because I thought I wasn’t trained, or didn’t seem “good enough”. . Once I got out of my own head a bit, I got less precious about my illustrations. Most of my illustration work is created for the Fun & Awkward greeting card line. The style fits this brand. I am being myself. The illustrations and greeting cards fit the vision I want, and I’m trying to make them cohesive for wholesale opportunities.
When did you start your company?
November of 2016.
How did you get involved with Greeting Card Design?
I started in 2010. I was single and unemployed in Boston. It was an outlet for all the awkwardness of that time. I started putting them on Etsy. Just a handful of cards, about five of them. When I started Studio Eighty Seven, it provided an opportunity to expand. . Someday soon I hope to have them in more retail shops around New England.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I am an active person. I ran a couple of half marathons. I practice yoga. I like to spend time outside no matter the season. My backyard has become my favorite gym - spreading mulch and ripping out weeds and other unwanted plants is a great workout. . As a family, we love to explore New England. It’s not unusual for us to wake up on a Saturday morning and decide to take a 2 hour drive somewhere.
What are your future goals?
Short Term, I’d love to get son in daycare one more day a week :) I’m pretty much there! There is a shop in Portsmouth that does wedding invitations and retail. Long term, I would love to have retail shop, and continue to do branding and marketing in the back for small businesses. My husband and I have also talked at length at owning and managing a wedding venue.
Who are your biggest fans?
My Mom, of course! There are also a handful of local women who have been really supportive of me and my card line. The local owner of a dog barkery and boutique, Quite Fetching, has been wonderful to me. We collaborate on card concepts, and they are sold at her shop. I am also fortunate to call all my clients, past and present, fans of my work and business.
My Husband has said about me, “I want to hitch that wagon to her star!”

A Higher Court by Patrick Ritter https://ift.tt/3dYoTHb To what lengths will the director of a Rochester hospital go to protect his staff? By Patrick Ritter.
Doctor Andrew Hanlon jogged down the middle of an empty street. Without people or cars, it was eerily quiet for a Rochester suburb. Even the dogs were sheltering in place. Despite the deserted streets, Hanlon's morning runs were about the only normal thing in his life. As director of the Rochester Memorial Hospital ICU, it was a welcome break from the pandemic. Getting close to his home, he turned onto Park Street. The sun spilled over the roof of a large colonial house onto a wide lawn. Doctor Hanlon breathed deeply and for a moment forgot about all of it. But only for a moment. Then the troubling thoughts flooded back, uninvited and unwanted, like his merciless enemy, the coronavirus. As director of the ICU, Hanlon faced a snowballing set of challenges: insufficient beds and equipment, exhausted doctors and nurses, and lack of masks and personal protective equipment. A deluge of patients was fighting for their lives in a chaotic new normal. And without proper gear, the hospital staff were putting their own lives on the line every day as well. Hanlon felt his neck muscles tightening. The Federal government wasn't stepping up to produce enough protective equipment. He was righteously angry he wasn't getting enough support, but felt ultimately responsible for hospital safety. It was a double shot of stress that lessened for only a brief moment in the sun during his run. After a quick shower and breakfast, he would head back to the front lines. In military terminology, a front line is the part of an army closest to the enemy, and it certainly was that. His team, up close to the virus all day, was at especially high risk without enough N95 masks. Today, like yesterday, he would have to ask his medical army to go into battle without enough armor. That bothered him more than anything. Except for the death. That was beyond overwhelming. Beyond what he thought he was prepared for. Dozens were dying every week, quarantined and alone. Hanlon saw death reflected in the eyes of nurses, and in the faces of the families when he had to give them the awful news. Andrew Hanlon was not the only doctor who had to occasionally escape to the hospital roof, to grieve, and clear his mind. Then it was back to combat. Down the block a garage door opened and a dark green SUV pulled out and stopped. A man, sixtyish, stooped, with disheveled silver hair, got out and walked back into the garage. Hanlon recognized him as Harold Crumb, who had recently moved into the neighborhood. Hanlon had only a couple previous contacts with Crumb, both somewhat strained. Crumb talked incessantly about himself, interrupting every time Hanlon spoke. As he liked to tell everyone, he had inherited a large sum of money and bragged how he outbid other buyers and paid all cash for the five-bedroom house. Why he needed such a spread was odd as he was divorced without children and he seemed to be a loner. Crumb also pestered him for free medical advice. Hanlon was glad he had gone back into the garage and he sped up to pass, hoping to avoid him. But he was too late. Crumb came back out, carrying what looked like two fishing rods and a cooler. "Hey, it's Doctor Hayland!" Crumb yelled, laughing at his play of words. "What the heck are you doing out so early? Shouldn't you be at work?" "It's Hanlon, Andy Hanlon. Just getting some exercise." "Shouldn't you be in quarantine or something? You work with all those infected patients, don't you?" Hanlon thought, Just move on. No need to defend myself to this guy. But instead he said, "Well I'm keeping a big distance out here, and we take a lot of precautions at the hospital, so we're in good shape, except for the -" He stopped. Didn't want to get into hospital politics with this guy. "Except for what?" "We have a severe shortage of proper masks. That's a huge challenge." "Can't you just buy 'em?" "The Feds aren't getting them made, so we're bidding against other hospitals, states, and even countries. I had a big shipment coming last week from China that was reallocated to France the day we were to get it. This week the prices have been bid up way beyond what we can afford." Crumb came around the SUV toward the street, nodding excitedly. "Yeah, I hear there is quite a demand for those masks, isn't that right?" "Yeah, it's insane really. Shouldn't have to be." "Hey, it's a free market ain't it Doctor Hayland? I got no problem with that." Now Hanlon really wanted to get out of there. He started stretching. "Well I better be going." "Wait a minute. I may have something for you." Crumb went into the garage and quickly came back out carrying a box. "Here you go doc," he said, pulling out a new mask, still in its package. "I'll put it on the back of my rig and you can come get it. It's the least I can do," he said proudly. Hanlon said, "That's an N95 isn't it? How many of those do you have? I mean, could you possibly spare any more? Our nurses are desperate for them, really desperate. Anything you could spare would be a life saver. I could send someone over from the hospital this morning if you -" "No, no, sorry. I can't spare any more. No way. I thought you would be grateful to get this one. You know I don't have to give you any, man. I was just doing my part. How 'bout a little appreciation? Anyways, I'm heading out to my country place this morning to do some fishing for a couple of days, so, you know, I really don't have the time." "Ok, I get it." Hanlon said. "Thank you." Yeah, I get it, skinflint. Hanlon picked up the mask and watched Crumb go back into the garage with the box of masks. Must be fifty in that box. He can't spare a few more? From inside the garage, Crumb yelled, "Oh, doc. I want to talk to you about this wrist pain of mine." But Doctor Hanlon was gone, sprinting down Park Street, pissed off, a single mask clutched in one hand. "I just can't believe that jerk!" Doctor Hanlon said to his wife as he spread poached eggs over burnt toast. "I mean, how many masks does one guy need? I'm someone who really needs them. And my staff, with one mask a day, at best. You know, they're bringing in homemade masks now, if you can believe it. And this guy acts like he is doing such a big favor giving me one mask." "I know, I know," his wife said. "It's not right." She laid her hands on Andrew's shoulders. "But maybe you can find some masks on eBay today. Didn't you say one of the other clinics got some there?" "Yeah, maybe. But at what cost? The hospital doesn't have the funds to compete now. With all non-elective surgeries canceled, we're hemorrhaging money. Might even go under from all this." She wanted to say something to help, something to acknowledge the thirty years Andrew had put in to build the ICU, the unbelievable strain he was now under, the sixteen-hour shifts, and the uncertainty as to when it would end. And the heavy responsibility to provide his staff with basic personal protection, which wasn't happening. But she didn't know what to say. So she just massaged his shoulders as her eyes misted up. Five miles away, Officer Anya Mateo was finishing her night shift, another quiet night cruising empty streets. She had been on the police force for only a year, and most of that was spent training, and now patrolling a quiet suburb during the pandemic. No wonder she was bored. A dark green SUV passing her from the opposite direction. She glanced at her radar screen. Over the speed limit but just barely. As it passed, she noticed that a taillight was out. Minor, but it was something. She hit the brakes, u-turned quickly, and followed. The SUV pulled over and Mateo approached. At just under 6 feet, she was above average height for a Trinidadian woman. Not surprising as her father, a retired surgeon, and her mother, a nurse, were also tall. She spoke with a slight Trini accent. "Good morning, suh." "Yeah, well, it was a good morning," said Harold Crumb. "Do yuh know why I pulled you over?" "What? No, I wasn't speeding." "Your left taillight ha gone out. Were you aware of that?" "Ha gone out? What kind of English is that? And how in hell am I 'posed to know that? I don't see no warning light here." Crumb jutted his chin toward the dash. Officer Mateo stood unmoving, hands on belt, while her eyes scanned the front seat for possible weapons. "License and registration please, suh." "Well, now since you said please, I guess I can get them for you. Where you from anyway. Not from around here are you?" This guy could be trouble, Mateo thought, carefully watching Crumb pull out his documents. She took his documents back to her patrol car and ran the checks. Crumb, Harold had no priors or outstanding tickets. "Mr. Crumb, I am goin' to issue this repair ticket. Yuh have thirty days to correct the taillight. She handed him the ticket and he swiped it from her hand. "Yeah, yeah, ok." Officer Mateo drove off shaking her head. In Trinidad they would say, He have no brought upsy. He has no manners. "Oh well," Hanlon said to his wife, reaching for his laptop. "I guess it can't hurt to look on eBay. Maybe there's a reasonable offer today. Don't know what else to do. I have to get more masks." Hanlon searched for N95 masks on eBay and up popped an offer: 300 Brand New N95 Masks, $25 each, or $7,000 for the lot. "Are you kidding me?" Hanlon said. "Come on, you don't need to make that much profit." Hanlon drilled down further and found the originating location: Park Street, Rochester, NY. "Geez, that's near us. It's..." "What?" "This is unbelievable." Hanlon stared at the offeror's email name: HaroldCrumb1. It's him, our jerk neighbor, Crumb, the guy who said he could only spare a single mask. I can't believe it, but he's selling them. At a huge markup!" "This is the same guy who inherited all that money?" "Yep. Un-frickin believable." "You think you could persuade him to sell at a lower price?" "No, not Crumb." Just hard to believe someone could do that. But, right now, I have to get to the hospital." Doctor Hanlon would later tell his wife it was the lack of sleep that made him do it. Or the stress. Or the enormous responsibility he bore. Those certainly contributed. But it was death that pushed him over, this time way too close. And too unfair. One of his best nurses had contracted the coronavirus the week before, very likely because of inadequate personal protective equipment. Only forty-five, she supported three kids, and was one of the hardest working, and kindest, nurses Hanlon had the privilege of working with. That afternoon, she passed away. Word spread fast. When they wheeled her out, the entire ICU staff, to a person, lined the hallways. A few started to applaud, but there wasn't the energy to sustain it. Instead, quiet shock filled the ICU, broken only by the sounds of ventilators humming. And muffled sobbing. Andrew Hanlon walked three flights of stairs to the roof, sat in a far corner, and wept. When he had recovered, he took the elevator back down to the battle lines. That was when he decided to do it. Late that night, Hanlon slipped out of the house, silently, not wanting to wake his wife who would likely try to talk him out of it. His electric car made little noise, which was good as the neighborhood was even quieter now. He drove slowly to Park Street and circled the block. A narrow alley ran behind the block. Hanlon parked nearby, grabbed a flashlight, and walked down the alley, reaching the back of Crumb's garage. All quiet so far. There was a small door with a dusty window next to it. Hanlon peered into the garage. The big green SUV wasn't there. So Crumb was still gone fishing. Perfect. The glass broke easily, and Hanlon reached in and unlocked the door with no trouble. Seemed too easy. He paused and listened for an alarm, or a worried neighbor. Nothing. So, he went in and looked around. There, in the back of the garage where Crumb had stored them were boxes containing the 300 brand new N95 masks. "Jackpot," Hanlon whispered to himself. He retraced his steps, retrieved his car and drove back down the alley slowly, lights off. In fact, it was too easy. Should have been a red flag. But Andrew Hanlon was adept at treating respiratory failure, not breaking and entering. He didn't expect that some home alarm systems do not announce themselves with bold warning sounds. Rather, they are stealth systems, hard wired to nearby police stations, who can get a patrol car there in ten to twelve minutes. With no traffic, Officer Anya Mateo made it in nine. Hanlon almost dropped the box when he heard the sharp voice, "Stop right there! Hands in the air!" Then Hanlon did drop the box, raising both hands. He stared at the policewoman, pistol drawn, legs spread in military pose. She was tall and wore a determined expression. "Don't do anything stupid," she said, moving in. "Turn around, hands behind your back." From out of nowhere handcuffs appeared and she cuffed him. "Now just what are yuh doin' here?" Hanlon knew it was over for him. Over in a lot of ways. No court would cut him a break, even under pandemic conditions. And the court of public opinion would be even harsher on his career. No use in making up something. So, he told Officer Mateo everything, calmly, as if he was describing a medical condition. "You say you are a doctor?" Mateo said incredulously. "Why can't your hospital get their own masks?" "I wish to god we could, but it's not that simple, Officer." We just can't get any. We have to bid against all the other facilities. I know it's no excuse. But the guy who lives here has a lot of money, doesn't need all these masks, yet he is selling them anyway for an exorbitant profit on eBay. Not because he needs the money. Just because he's, he's..." "He's what?" "He doesn't see what I see every day. Death every day. Now my nurses are getting sick and dying for lack of protection. I would gladly buy them if we had the money, believe me." "I know about it," Officer Mateo said. "My mother is a nurse. It is horrible, I know. She's told me about the shortages, but -" She paused. "This is still breaking and entering." "Yes, I realize that." Hanlon hoped for some type of leniency. "Even if it is for life-saving reasons?" Mateo slowly withdrew a pad and started to write up the arrest record. She glanced at her mobile phone and a puzzled look crossed her face. "This address is 44 Park Street?" "Yes, I think so." "Dr. Hanlon, is this the residence of a," she squinted at her phone, "a Harold Crumb?" "Yes, that's the owner. And a real son of a bitch too." Mateo lowered the arrest record pad. "I know this guy," she said, "and you are right. He's a real piece of work. I actually pulled him over last night, early this morning actually, over a taillight infraction. This Harold Crumb is the guy hoarding these masks?" Hanlon said, "The same. I tried to get him to part with a few masks and he would only give me one. Said he couldn't spare any more. But he's selling them for a huge profit while my hospital suffers. I know I've made a huge mistake here Officer, and I will accept responsibility for it. But this just isn't right." Officer Anya Mateo stared at Dr. Hanlon. She could see the exhaustion on his face, and the injustice echoed in his eyes. And she also saw a bit of her late father reflected there. A highly principled man, her father would notice an injustice and tell her, "Just no right Anya, just no right." It was one of his expressions she never forgot. She put the arrest record pad back into her jacket, glanced around, and said, "Are there any more boxes of masks in there?" "Yes, quite a few." Officer Mateo unlocked and removed the handcuffs and said, "These masks are all evidence now, so we need to load them up." "We? thought Hanlon, but he didn't say anything, following the officer into the garage. Mateo picked up a couple of boxes. "Your trunk open?" "Ah, yeah, let me get it," Hanlon said. Maybe there was a chance. "You're not going to press charges?" "For what? Did you see anything here Doctor? I didn't." "No, Officer Mateo, I didn't see a thing either." A slight smile crossed the doctor's lips. When all the boxes were loaded into his trunk, Hanlon took out a handful of masks and handed them to Mateo. "You and your department may need them. If anyone asks, they came from me. I'll take the heat." "No worries, Doctor, there won't be any heat, not for this. I'm the patrol officer for this area. My report will document a minor garage break-in but the perpetrator had fled. Happens a lot. And I will deal with this Crumb, no worries. But let me ask you, Doctor, yuh took a huge risk by breaking in here. It could have been your career. Why did you do it?" "A risk? Yeah, that's true. But come down to the ICU and you'll see some real risks, the risks the staff are taking, up against this deadly virus. Those are the huge risks, Officer." Hanlon got into his car and rolled down the window. "And what about you, Officer Mateo? You're taking a big career risk as well by letting me go. I imagine the courts wouldn't look kindly upon you either." "No, probably not. But there are courts and then there are courts." "How's that?" Anya Mateo looked up at the night sky, remembering. "It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, there is a higher court than the courts of justice. One that supersedes all others." "And what is that?" "Gandhi called it the Court of Conscience." "Well, I can live with that, Officer Mateo." "Me too, Dr. Hanlon, me too," she said. "Thank you for everything you're doing and I wish your team the best." Dr. Andrew Hanlon drove away, revived and restored. And armed for battle.

Coronavirus Will Be Remembered Very Differently By Our Family
Coronavirus, also known as, Covid-19, and while not politically correct, The Wuhan (Josh’s preferred name), The China Cough (Brianna’s preferred name) or The Chinese Disease (Ashlynn’s preferred name), Kung Flu, The Rona (my favorite) is the pandemic flu virus that originated in Wuhan, China. This virus profoundly impacted the world in early 2020, killing a small percentage of those who contract the virus, wiping out trillions of dollars of wealth in the stockmarket and causing panic and social distancing like nothing this world has ever seen.
The virus is an upper respiratory infection that can cause severe trauma to the lungs. For most people, the virus ends up feeling like a cold or flu, but for others, hospitalization is required and the harshest cases have resulted in death. While it’s believed the virus began impacting China and other SE Asian countries in the Fall of 2019, our media coverage in the states was largely just snip-it reporting of it being “their problem.” After all, there were no known cases in Europe or the United States. But in hindsight, you can’t have any cases if you aren’t testing. The United States had yet to develop a widely used test to detect the virus even though there were likely hundreds of thousands of undocumented cases from NY to LA. Out of sight, out of mind. For months, these cases probably passed off as just a run of the mill colds and flues.
January: The first time I really started hearing about the Coronavirus was in late January. I was in the middle of the refinancing process on my mortgage. I was watching interest rates daily. Typically, mortgage rates follow the 10 Year Treasury Yield. The 10 Year Yield is a fairly stable yield curve that really doesn’t have huge sways, unless there is some kind of global pressure. Well, in late January, the 10 Year Yield started plummeting due to an outbreak of documented Coronavirus cases in China. China’s stock market was in disarray and although the downstream impacts on other countries markets had yet to be felt, the uncertainly led to a steep downturn in the Treasury Yield, and therefore a cliff in mortgage rates. On a daily basis, I was in contact with my mortgage broker getting the latest rate and lock recommendation. In late January, I contracted a rough upper respiratory infection. I had a fever that came and went and a sharp cough that lasted a week. At the time, I thought nothing of it, as the virus then circulated through the rest of the house over the coming weeks. But in hindsight, the symptoms were perfectly aligned with that of The Wuhan.
February 13: With the stock market at an all-time high (DOW 29,423), Blue Cross sent out our first company-wide email notification providing general information about Coronavirus. At the time, BCBS’ statement was that Minnesotans and those in the United States were at low risk for contracting the Coronavirus. Although a handful of cases had been confirmed in the United States, there really was no cause for alarm.
February 20-29: One week later, the media coverage began turn. As more and more cases were confirmed positive, the US also recorded it’s first death from Coronavirus. During the final week in February, cases began popping up in nearly every state and person-to-person transmission of the virus had been confirmed. Travel to China was banned. The media started running with wild stories about the virus giving way to politicians lining up on their side of the aisle to either commend or find fault with the response by the Trump Administration. This was the beginning of a new era for Americans. The stock market started to nose dive..
March 1-7: By the first week in March something was brewing in our way of life that didn’t quite seem right. Every news cycle was about a worsening doom and gloom picture of Covid-19. I will never forget the pictures of stretchers carrying body bags out of a Seattle-area nursing home that was plagued with the virus, killing at least 35. Early on for the United States, Seattle would serve as the epicenter for Coronavirus. The impacts of the virus were impacting our everyday life too. That same week, BCBS issued a statement to employees indicating all non-essential work travel was being canceled. That meant Dyan’s trip to San Diego (that I was hoping to piggyback along with) was canceled as well as her upcoming trips to Vermont and Baltimore. The virus was steamrolling the stock market. The DOW was down nearly 20% since mid-February. I was watching my 401K hemorrhage value daily, err, hourly. This felt very different than any other stock market correction we’ve had. EVER. This one had no end in sight. Scary. And to make matters worse, people began panic shopping, completely wiping out shelves at the grocery store. It was so surreal walking around a store with completely empty shelves. This isn’t supposed to happen in America. This has to be a dream.
March 8-19: By the second week in March, Coronavirus was all anybody could talk about. BCBS issued a statement to employees that Friday, 3/13, would be a mandatory “Work For Home” day, as the company wanted to test network adequacy and bandwidth in the instance we all needed to work from home in the future. The following Monday, 3/16, BCBS announced that BCBS employees would be required to work from home, through the end of March. Just two days later, the governor of MN announced that all schools would be closed through early April. That meant parents pulling double duty – homeschooling while trying to accomplish their day job from home. Aye-yai-yai! By the end of the week, the market was still plunging into an unknown abyss, down 30%.
With no travel being advised, and new social distancing rules in place (stay at least 6 feet apart in public spaces), we were spending a lot of time inside with the kiddos. Since the weather wasn’t really cooperating like and ideal spring quite yet, we needed to come up with some fun things to do indoors. One of my favorite things to do is break boxes of baseball cards. One of my favorite boxes when I was a kid was 1990 Score (Mom and Dad bought me a box of 36 packs for my birthday that year). The reason it’s my favorite is that it contains a hard to find Bo Jackson insert. Flaunting shoulder pads and a baseball bat, this black & white card is one of the most iconic of a junk card era. I found a box online for relatively cheap and it was in my mailbox 3 days later. On 3/19, The kids helped me re-live my youth, by tearing into these plastic packs. I had given the kids a description of the exact card we were looking for, so the hunt was on.
Brianna pulled the first BO!
Scarlett and Ashlynn followed up with two more Bo Jackson cards!
In all, it took about thirty minutes to blow through all 36 packs. But wow, so much nostalgia, and so much fun. That Bo Jackson card is worth about $1 today, but the excitement we had together ripping those packs open made the investment so incredibly worth it!
March 21: Minnesotans were in full lockdown on Brianna’s birthday. No restaurants, entertainment venues or shopping was open. Therefore, we had to celebrate Brianna’s birthday quarantine-style! Brianna wanted to have a bake-off for her birthday, so Brianna and Scarlett made vanilla birthday cake while Ashlynn and Felicity made chocolate cupcakes. Both were off the charts good….there honestly was no loser between the two! For her birthday, she received two 5lb tubs of slime as well as a new bike.
Later that evening (after a family bike ride), we watched Jumanji 2 in the basement with theater popcorn and mega candy boxes!
March 22: This is the day why we will remember the Coronavirus Quarantine a little bit differently than most families. WE BOUGHT A PUPPY! Here is how it all went down. Dyan and I have been talking about getting a puppy for a long time…like for the past 3 years at least. We’ve just never pulled the trigger. Earlier in the week, I began thinking of ways to entertain the kids should this quarantine really eat into the spring and summer months. All I kept coming back to was: a puppy. I mean, it’s the perfect time. We’d all be at home to take care of the dog for a prolonged period of time. Plus, with spring on the doorstep, training outside should be a lot easier than it would be in the dead of winter. I had planned to find the perfect puppy and surprise everybody…including Dyan. I texted and emailed with breeders all week, but was coming up empty. I had one pup in SW Minnesota that I could find ready, but quite honestly, the dog wasn’t very attractive. I needed help finding a puppy, so I decided to tell Dyan on Sunday morning. SHE ADORED THE IDEA OF A PUPPY! Within an hour, Dyan found a litter of AKC Yellow Labs in a town southwest of Rochester, near the border of Iowa. And within two hours, we had placed a hold on one of four males in the litter, specifically, “Red Collar.”
We didn’t tell the kids yet, however. We had them all get ready for the day and head out to the car for a nice little quarantine-busting road trip. The kids thought the drive was just so we could get out of the house for the first time in a week. After an hour of driving, the kids were getting antsy, asking questions. They knew something was up. Finally, ten minutes before we arrived at the Hayfield farm, we told the kids we needed their help picking out the perfect puppy for our family. I have never seen so much joy and excitement from all of the kids, EVER. There were tears, shrieks and screams. The puppy, these kids have so patiently waited for was finally over.
And when we stepped foot in the garage of the breeder, there were puppies from two different litters. “Blue Collar” and Red Collar were just inside the door, while several other puppies were in a large cage. And while all the puppies were absolutely adorable, Red Collar, the puppy Dyan picked out in the pictures posted on Facebook, was going to be ours. No question about it.
He was bigger than the other puppies with floppy ears and so much skin that his wrinkles rolled in all the right places. The breeder told us his mom, Lady Red Fern (Fernie) was 80lbs, and his dad, Healthlands Love My Charger (Charger) was 95lbs.
She fully expected Red Collar to reach 90lbs. With his massive paws at only 9 weeks old, there was no denying this puppy would grow up to be a biggun! The kids took turns holding the puppies, but Red Collar never left our sight. Within 20 minutes, we were headed back to the car, with the puppy swaddled in a blanket. Welcome to the family, Red Collar!
Your new name is Ranger.
March 24 - April 25
Ranger really did help to break up the monotony of our daily grind from home.
The kids were always ready to put up a good fight over who got to take him for a walk, give him a bath, cuddle with him on the couch or play in our last spring snow storm.
The pup never had to walk. He was constantly carried around the house and neighborhood by the kids. As soon as one would put him down, somebody else would pick him up. He was treated like a Prince.
But even though our family had a new puppy to love, life was still at a standstill in so many regards. We didn’t leave the house the entire week. We had Hy-Vee and Amazon deliver all of our groceries. We were in the process of trying to find the right balance of being school teachers and BCBS employees throughout the day. Not going to lie, it was tough. All of us huddling up around the kitchen table with laptops, notebooks, text books and iPads seemed foreign and severely tested boundaries. Our kitchen table has never been used so much...
On March 29th, I was going stir crazy. I needed to get out of the house. So Mike and I hatched a plan to get on the water and do a little social distance fishing at the Red Wing Dam. Temps were in the 40′s with a howling 30 mph wind out of the north and light showers that turned to sleet at times. It was absolutely the most miserable fishing conditions I have ever fished in. But, being on the water for the first time this year was worth every moment of the experience. Mike even salvaged the fishing day with a GIANT 10″ Sauger!
On my way home that night, I found the cheapest gas I recall in my lifetime. Oh Coronavirus, I love how you are making the gas cheap!
Over the next month, Ranger brightened our lives so much. To the point where it’s hard to imagine a life without him. He attached to our family (and us to him) so quickly, that we didn’t leave the house without him. He came on our walks, trips to Target, pick-up & drop-off of the kids, food take-out runs and any other time we had to leave the house. We just couldn’t imagine him being home alone.
Way back in the day...like at least 4 years ago, when Dyan and I first discussed getting a dog, we always said we’d get two at the same time, so that they would be best buds and always have a friend to play with when we weren’t home. Our plan was to find a litter that had both yellow and chocolate males. For years we searched on and off for the perfect littler of pups, but could never find a large breed mixed litter. During that time of looking, Dyan and I put deposits on two pups (separate occasions), which we disappointingly backed out on because of bad timing.
But timing wasn’t an issue this time. In fact, timing was working out to our advantage. We had nowhere to be but home, for the foreseeable future. So how about that second puppy, Dyan?
April 26
We had once again scoured the puppy pages online looking for the perfect Chocolate Lab. Dyan would once again get the credit for finding this one. He was located in an obscure town in eastern Iowa. We’d make plans to drive three and a half hours and meet at Bass Pro Shoppes in Des Moines.
We arrived at 9:00, and when I say we, I include Ranger, because again, we don’t leave home without him. We were the Welcome Wagon contingent. The breeder pulled up shortly after us, with a puppy in his lap. Our puppy? Not so fast. We took to the puppy immediately. He seemed perfect, and at barely 8 weeks old. The breeder went on and on with stories about breeding world class coon hounds. We just wanted to get on the road! The puppy snuggled in tight to us, never touching the ground in the 20 minutes. As we were wrapping up, I decided to put the pup on the ground to meet Ranger. The pup had a severe limp on his rear right leg. The breeder was very honest about it indicating he had stepped very hard on the pups paw 3 hours earlier that morning. He indicated there “could” be some damage to the paw, or, he “could” be just fine. The entire conversation changed in that moment. It had been three hours since the incident occurred, so he should be feeling better if there was no damage, right? What if it was a broken paw? Having a broken paw cared for could be several thousand dollars depending on the damage. The puppy gingerly hobbled around the empty Bass Pro parking lot. Neither of us were comfortable bringing an injured puppy home. Finally, the breeder offered to drive home, pick up the next largest male in the litter, and meet us at this same spot in a couple hours. That seemed like the best option at this point.
Since Iowa did not have a Corona-related stay-at-home order in place, most stores were open. We leisurely walked around Bass Pro for an hour looking at puppy toys and puppy treats.
Around 11, the breeder arrived at Bass Pro for the second time, with his second dog. He profusely apologized for the entire ordeal, and for not being able to have given this second pup a bath. He pulled the pup from the back cab of the truck.
Now, I should rewind here just a bit for some additional context to the story. As Dyan and I walked Ranger around Bass Pro I think we were both leaning toward walking away from the sale anyway because the overall vibe the breeder was giving off wasn’t exactly selling us on his litter (but that’s another story.) We also both agreed that this second dog was NOT the dog we chose from the litter. We had no pre-attachment to him like we did over the limping puppy. We had gushed over the other puppy for two weeks as we secretly waited for pick-up day. But this second dog only had one picture posted online. He was Male #2, or “Blue Collar.”
Our agreement was that if Blue Collar didn’t seem like a good fit, or wasn’t cute, or wasn’t what we were expecting, we’d walk away and not look back.
So, when Blue Collar was pulled out of the cab of the truck, and we got our first look at him, it was game over. Immediate. Period. Done. Blue Collar was ours. He was absolutely adorable. I asked Dyan the question (full well knowing the answer,) “What do you think?” Obviously no response was required as the baby rubbed up against Dyan’s cheek before nuzzling in under her chin. We put him on the ground, for safe measure. Had to make sure Blue Collar didn’t have a limp! He cautiously moved around the parking lot, all paws fully functioning.
Ranger seemingly towered over Blue Collar as the two sat side by side. Neither quite sure what to make of the other. The breeder wasted no time and was gone quickly this time around. We stared at the two puppies, wondering what we had just got ourselves into. At this point one of us finally called Blue Collar by his new name. Moose, let’s take you to your new home!
The drive home turned into a much longer journey with several potty breaks along the way. Ranger and Moose shared a bed n the backseat a majority of the drive home.
And when we arrived home, we broke the surprise to the kids by walking into the room holding him. The kids went nuts! Hysteria, tears and shrieks of joy. The Blaniels Family was now complete!
And even though Minnesota is still on lock-down from Coronavirus, our family is quickly building new bonds and soaking up moments of excitement and joy caused by the two guys!

MAIN. fandomless, crime affiliated 24 - 29 ; fight-dog / bodyguard
Emily has completed Zamora's gruesome training / torture. He has begun implementing her as his personal guard during the day as well as personal assistant. At night, he either pawns her off to the highest bidder for dirty work to get done, or he sends her into the fighting pits to compete for money. If she isn't travelling, she's at home in Rochester, NY.
AU1. supernatural / mythological themes 20 - 29 ; (sort of) hunter
Oskar was a renowned hunter, known for his skill in efficiently taking down creatures that posed immediate threats. He has Emily and focuses on being a dad in between hunting. Once she's old enough, Emily trains with Oskar to become a hunter as well. The two are a duo for many years following her official training with him, both becoming well known for their efficiency, professionalism, and good judgement both among hunters and creatures alike (for they only hunt creatures that are immediate or continuous threats). Oskar is killed by a vampire cove, leaving Emily on her own. After exacting revenge, she continues to hunt on her own.
AU2. apocalypse / dystopian themes, zombies optional 18 - 29 ; former boxer / bodyguard ; survivor
under construction. basic gist is she's out there, surviving, being a badass after something kills her dad.
AU3. superhero / comic themes 16 - 29 ; enhanced being / super strength ; true neutral
Oskar became a boxer in order to cover up the fact he was a gifted being with strength. When he has Emily, the pair discovers later on in her childhood that she, too, has his gift of strength. They train together in order to build on Emily’s gifts/abilities and allow Emily to box as well. Down the line and further into her career, a band of extremists/anti-gifted’s find out about Emily and Oskar’s secret. They kill Oskar, apprehended just before doing the same to Emily. Emily continues only to do her final match before retiring from boxing.
AU can vary after this point. Emily may be a: vigilante, neutral-party, instructor depending on thread/muse b.
AU4. harry potter / magical themes 16 - 29; student -or- instructor ; magically gifted

They find later in her life that she is, indeed, magic-bearing. Her magic proves volatile/powerful, though concentrated. Oskar teaches Emily what he can and what he knows about magic, his own magic, and what he suspects of her own magic. They later on seek professional guidance for her and her magic. Emily is instructed and taught to hone and control her abilities so that they are further focused, energy adjustable between spells/casts. Later in her life, Emily becomes an instructor herself, focusing on those like her who’ve had uncontrollable/powerful magic.
AU may differ depending on thread/muse b.
AU5. overwatch au 18 - 29 ; tank / defense ; overwatch agent ; former talon agent
very under construction. basic gist is after her father dies, talon agent/operative peter zamora finds and recruits (forces) her into talon via blackmail and torture (maybe). later down the line (not sure where) emily escapes and goes to overwatch to tell what she can and join their cause. zamora is probably killed or dismissed after that.

AU7. dragon age 1, 2, & 3 au 18 - 29 ; rogue ; companion
Emily’s story begins in the year Dragon 9:30.
Emily Brass lived in Redcliffe with her father when the first air of the blight was rumored. She could feel it in her bones, the changing in the air. Emily wanted to set out, to help make a change when she heard about the blight spreading from the Wilds and the trouble with demons at the Calenhad Circle Tower. Emily stays in Redcliffe, though, to help with the onslaught of undead surfacing in Redcliffe while the Arl lay ill in the castle.
It wasn't long until the last two Wardens (and their party, if any at that point) had shown up to Redcliffe. Emily insisted she join them as they head to the castle to aid the Arl. She wanted to put her blade where it counted, and that was there beside the Wardens. After more insistence, Emily joined and helped save Redcliffe. As the Warden and their party were leaving, Emily said goodbye to her father and joined them for the journey. The Blight was a threat to all, and she wanted to do her part in helping stop it if she could.
And so Emily goes. With the Warden and their party, Emily helps to stop the Blight. Once it is all said and done, Emily explains that she will go her own way to reunite with her father -- which has fled to Kirkwall -- in order to let him know about the end of the Blight. Emily promised to keep in touch.
In the year Dragon, 9:31, Emily goes to Kirkwall.
Emily lands in Kirkwall just as the Blight has ended, in frantic search for her father. She finds him in the middle of Kirkwall, already settled. Although things were just as haywire in Kirkwall as they had been in Fereldan, Emily does what she can for her father so he is comfortable and safe. They manage themselves well enough, Emily and her father working to maintain income. Emily as a Guard, her father as a blacksmith. Her father remarried shortly after Emily returned, meeting a lovely spinner in the market. She moves in, and they live this way, content, for about 3 years.
Then her step-mother receives a white lily.
Emily’s mother was the second victim of the white lily serial killer, sending her in a frenzy to find the killer. Her father was thrown into a depression, his health declining fast because of the heartbreak. Emily set off to do what she could to find this serial killer. This is when she meets Hawke, almost a year later. Both victims. Both in search.
Emily vows to aid Hawke, telling them of the loss of her own (step)mother. Not long after they put their efforts together do they find the killer and avenge both of their mothers-- Hawke’s in a far more terrifying state. Emily gives Hawke their time to grieve, to cope, and then visits them again a few days after. Emily offers her services and her friendship to Hawke, hearing much about their reputation as well as their companions. From there, Emily had stayed at Hawke’s side. She was there helping in the tensions with the Arishok, and with the madhouse that was Anders’ chantry stunt and Knight-Commander going Lyrium.
Things finally settle down for Kirkwall-- for most of the Free Marches as it is --and Emily decides it is time to say her goodbyes. She, nor her father, couldn’t stay in Kirkwall for her father’s sake. Still touched by his wife’s death, the city brought him heartache. Emily says her farewells to her friends in Kirkwall, though swears to pen often.
In the year Dragon, 9:40, Emily travels back to Ferelden.
Emily and her father make their home in the Hinterlands, off in a more remote countryside area so her father can farm and regain some sense of self control.
Emily knows of the civil war and internal turmoil happening in Thedas between Orlais and Fereldan. The Conclave was set to hold a court, The Divine herself there to speak of the treaty between the Mages and the Templars, addressing the status of Thedas as they knew it. Emily was on her way to attend. Thankfully, she was late.
Emily arrives at the Conclave just moments after the explosion, witnessing the Herald falling from the Fade herself. This is when Emily sets it on herself to help where she can. She helps take the unconscious Herald towards the camp where Lady Nightingale Leliana - an old friend - and Lady Cassandra Pentaghast are. From there, Emily spreads herself out with their ranks in order to fight off the demons pouring from the rifts as well as aiding any injured soldiers and survivors.
It is from there, after the Herald seals the first rift, that she joins Leliana and Cassandra, as well as the rest of their party, to become a part of the Inquisition. Emily introduces herself to the Herald, offering her services forward. Emily becomes a partner of the Herald’s, and then eventually the Inquisitor’s, playing a part there in the restoration and the protection of all of Thedas as it is.
AU8. tolkien / lotr au ; fantasy / midieval themes 18 - 29 ; adventurer / guard
underconstruction. basic gist is she is/was a Ranger.
AU9. kingsmen / statesmen au ; spy / intel operative themes 18 - 29 ; spy / statesman / bodyguard
Emily Brass is known as Agent Rottweiler of the Houndsmen, an underground intel operative within the United States tied to the -men agencies. Her father, Oskar Brass, was the previous holder of Rottweiler. At his death, he left the seat open for Emily to test for. Passing (with flying colors), she began her real training and field work as an underground intel operative, a dealer of varying information, gear, etc. to the -men agencies. The Houndsmen were the ones that went into the deep darks of intel for the -men agencies. The true neutrals.

➤ Oskar Brass, a Swedish immigrant and a world-renowned boxer, met Joanne Kinnear, a woman of profound beauty, one night after a match he’d won. He swore it was love at first sight. Oskar asked Joanne to dinner, and from there, moved forward into a relationship with her. They were married after their first year of dating. Another year later and Joanne was due for a baby girl. Emily Ceanna Brass was born on October 28th of 1987 in Rochester, NY to Joanne and Oskar. Together they lived in a large home on the West side of Rochester. Oskar poured equal attention into raising Emily and into furthering his still budding boxing career. Because of this, Joanne became unhappy in their marriage (and because he was giving most of his money to Emily). Joanne drew the line when Oskar suggested they teach Emily boxing. While he signed Emily up for classes at age 4 (four), Joanne was filing for divorce. By the time Emily was 6 (six), her parents had officially split and she had officially started boxing.
➤ Oskar had to leave their estate and half of his wealth to Joanne, as per their agreement, but he wasn’t leaving Emily. He and Emily moved to Andrew Terrace Apartments in the southern area of Rochester. Those apartments began to feel more like home than that house ever would have.
➤ Oskar homeschooled Emily once they successfully moved into the apartments. In between boxing lessons, they had reading, writing, and math lessons. Oskar refrained some on teaching Emily English because he strongly believed they were going to move to Sweden before she was 7 (seven). Their focus was in boxing and conventional schoolwork. When they realized they wouldn’t be moving to Sweden anytime soon, Oskar and Emily settled comfortably in their apartments and began looking into enrolling Emily into a public school.
➤ From there, she led an average, happy life. She made friends both in school and in the ring. Her grades were impressive and her passion for boxing far more impressive than that. She read all the books she could get her hands on, went to every boxing match around town that she could see with Oskar. Her childhood was fulfilling and beautiful. She wouldn’t trade any of it for a single thing.
➤ Her life doesn’t begin to stir until she turns eighteen.
➤ Emily was officially qualified to compete in a national championship tournament. She’d climbed her way up, proving her strength and talent. Her match was scheduled for that next year if her career remained successful and if she remained active. Emily couldn’t remember a more grueling training period than those months leading up to her championship match. It was the night before that very match that she had lost her father.
➤ Attacked after leaving their regular gym late at night, Oskar was killed and Emily nearly killed along with him. Had the law enforcement not shown up when they had, Emily might’ve been dead. She was in shock, mourning. Her father had been killed right before her eyes.
➤ Emily fought her match that next day and won in the name of her late father. It was during her acceptance speech that she announced her sudden retirement. Realizing she wouldn’t be able to continue in her career without her father, she decided to hang her gloves up and pursue a stable job in order to make end’s meet until she could make up enough funds for university. ➤ After finding an add for a wanted receptionist for Zamora Pharmacies, Emily begins putting together a resume (despite her doubts of acceptance) and calls in for an interview set the next week. She cleans up, arrives at the interview, and finds herself face to face with the owner of the pharmacy line himself: Peter Scott Zamora. She was nervous, but that wouldn’t stop her from giving her all in the interview. ➤ Three days later, Emily gets a call from Mister Zamora himself approving her application, informing her of her hours and her start date. Excited, Emily prepares herself for this new job and definite change in life. Little did she know how much of a change that really would become. ➤ Zamora had other plans for Emily. After learning about her extensive background in boxing and of the recent death of her father, he found this a striking opportunity for himself. Peter Zamora, in the cover of night and underground locations, ran and “competed” in several “dog fights”. He’d pick champions of his own and send them out to fight, bringing him extra money under the tables for his business. He started with simple street urchins. Now that he had Emily, Zamora devised a plan that he knew would go farther than his expectations. ➤ Emily goes in for her first day on the job. Within hours, she is drugged, taken to an unmarked location, and left locked to the walls. ➤ For three years, Zamora held Emily hostage in an unmarked location near his pharmaceutical distributors center. There she was tortured, beaten, raped, and trained under grueling circumstances and methods in order to be shaped and molded into Zamora’s image of a perfect, obedient asset. It took three years to break and remold her, to implement a state of fear so strong in Emily that she was reduced to nothing more than an obedient servant. ➤ Once Zamora was certain Emily was ready, he threw her into her first underground fight. His “dog” in the “dogfight”. She was to win under any circumstance, or die. Not much of a choice. So Emily fought. And Emily won. From there, after Zamora’s plan had proved successful, Emily was kept as his personal asset. ➤ Emily Brass became Peter Zamora’s personal body guard, his receptionist, his liaison, his arm-candy for socialite events, his representative for both professional and unseeming tasks. Anything he needed, anything he wouldn’t get his hands dirty with, Zamora sent Emily for. This was all she’d known for four more years of her life. ➤ Zamora managed to piss off plenty of other fat-cats for stealing their thunder in the dog fights. One particular competitor, Arik Liskov, took this far more personal than the rest. Losing money meant more to Liskov than it meant to most in the game. It meant so much to Liskov that he had men kidnap Emily from the locker room after a fight and bring her to Liskov’s storage facility as ransom for Zamora. Either Zamora leaves the game and pays a ransom for Emily’s release, or she dies. ➤ Zamora received the ransom call, Emily in the room. He laughed, waving her off, and ended the call. ➤ Emily had almost died that day, tortured for weeks prior to the call. Liskov himself held a gun to her temple and had come close to pulling the trigger once Zamora ended the call. If Emily hadn’t been quick, hadn’t been in a panic to survive, she would have died. ➤ Emily fought her way out of the storage house, a broken leg and arm and many more wounds covering her as she crawled out, leaving nobody alive behind her. She was found later that evening by a patrol unit after hearing reports of gunfire in the area. Hospitalized and detained after recovery, Emily had to go through a trial. After months of grueling courts, they chalked her case of to self defense and released her with promise of close eyes. ➤ Emily went back to Zamora’s office, in person. Zamora acted as though nothing passed between them, only enraging Emily further. She came close to killing Peter Zamora that day. After years of torture, after nearly dying too many times for comfort, after anger finally surfaced enough to assault him, Emily couldn’t do it. They made a deal instead, Zamora more than compliant for his life. Zamora stay away from her and anyone she cares for, and she lets him live. ➤ She walked out of his office, more changed than she’d ever been altered in all her years underneath him. ➤ Emily pursued certificates and an education in order to become a physical trainer and therapist, as well as a youth boxing coach. She bought the gym she and her father trained in while she was boxing and set up business there in Rochester, New York.

Dog Bites
You’ll find the link below to my songs for the week for 5/1-5/7.
https://youtu.be/Slov3vEhUDA
Another song about privacy, but many people don’t take their personal privacy seriously and don’t understand the potential consequences to their freedoms, so I’ll keep writing songs about that topic. The song is a couple days late, but I think I’ll be easy on myself. Almost two weeks ago now I was walking my dog and he was attacked by an off leash dog. I did everything I could to shake the dog loose, eventually with the other owners help we were able to pry them apart. My dog ended up with a pretty decent head wound above his ear, and I with a couple of puncture wounds in my left hand. It wasn’t pretty to say the least (this is the short version of the story). Both Cash (my dog) and I are recovered, Cash is still wearing a cone until his head wound finally tightens up and I still have some soreness in my left hand and the wounds are still scabbed over.
Initially I was dramatized, and worried about my hands. Screen printing and guitar playing are my life, and needless to say I was concerned for how long I would be inured. Within a few days I was able to play guitar, and by Friday of the following week I was able to play my show opening up for Jeffrey Lewis and Los Bolts. As far as my song a week challenge is concerned, I had wrote and recorded two songs the week before, so I uploaded the second song the week of the injury to keep the streak going. Last week I hardly had time to write anything, between recovery and the show, and working live screen printing events through the weekend. I did write a song late Sunday, but too late to record (trying to be respectful to the neighbors). So I think I can be a couple days late...I don’t think anybody is counting except myself!
In other news my tour is coming together for the beginning of June with Churches and Trains, just looking for a Sunday show on June 11th, somewhere between Rochester, NY and Boston, MA. Click on the show page for an update. Also playing Compost Heap Fest in Denver Colorado the first weekend of June https://www.facebook.com/events/1324139360986916/

Begin training in a low-distraction location. This might be inside your residence, your backyard or another encased area prior to you go to an area where the interruptions are a whole lot much more intense. Cord All you have to do is connect the cable to your pet, then let him drag it behind him throughout training sessions. I have my pup Wally put on and also drag the check cable behind him both inside along with outdoors in my yard to get him utilized to the feeling. It’s constantly most convenient to introduce a brand-new tool and/or task in a low-distraction setting.
What I’ll do is I simply clip the check cable to Wally’s normal level collar when we’re inside. Once outside, I use both his harness and also his doggie knapsack as accessory factors.
Once Wally’s dragging the check cord behind him, I’ll place him right into a “sit-stay” while strolling towards the various other end of the cord. I’ll then call him as well as award him for coming my means with a high worth reward.
After a couple of repeatings, I’ll drop the check cord. That’s to make sure that Wally reaches practice coming when called even when I’m not holding the cord.
High-value deals with in mix with the check cable
In case you’re questioning which treats I offered Wally during our training sessions, I utilized Zuke’s duck and also rabbit training deals with a great deal as he was really motivated to work for them.
Deals with aside, there’s one more point I intend to state. No one’s best, yet it’s truly essential to prevent giving a command you can not reinforce and to only provide commands once whenever feasible. That‘s because you desire your dog to listen to you the first time you ask him to do something, and not after the umpteenth time.
Check cords are perfect for this since they permit improvement and reeling back in!
Did the item aid us make progress in our recall training
? Yes! Like I mentioned above, we’ve been putting an emphasis on our recall video game recently. The
Mighty Paw Check Cord was a welcome device in assisting us make progress, particularly incorporated with Wally’s knapsack as well as the single-ingredient treats from Real Dog
. Below is Wally practicing coming when called with the check cord: I discovered that linking a little knot on completion of the check cable makes dealing with and also holding it a little bit less complicated. Naturally that implies that it may wind up getting stuck on rocks or underbrush if you were to utilize it this way in a field, to make sure that’s something to remember.
Exist any kind of disadvantages?
The check cable is made with a smooth surface, rope melt is still a concern in my point of view. I only say that because I’ve experienced it on my legs a couple of years back, as well as allow me inform you that it hurt like crazy!
So in order to avoid it, I ‘d recommend using gloves as well as lengthy pants when you’re collaborating with the check cord. Likewise, step on it instead of grab it with your hand!
Currently we ‘d such as to hear from you!
Currently it’s your turn! Have you made use of a check cord with your canine? Do you have any added suggestions?
If you would like to get a check cable to start training your pet, usage code CHECK15 for 15% off and also free delivery on Mighty Paw’s 30-ft check cable! Click here.

I’have already heard of many others through my blog, youtube, facebook, and twitter such as KSDS, The Seeing Eye, Guide Dogs of Texas, and Fidelco, but I wanted to create a list with addresses and links just in case someone on the other side of the U.S. is looking for a local guide dog training school.
