Toyota venza hybrid
Tumblr media
In terms of cargo space, every 2023 Venza offers 28.8 cubic feet of carrying space behind the second row and 55.1 cubic feet total with the rear seatbacks folded. Regardless of the trim level, sound-absorbing insulation and body sealing material have been placed throughout Venza’s structure to help reduce unwanted cabin noise. In addition to the new Nightshade Edition, the 2023 Toyota Venza is available in three other trim levels: LE, XLE, and Limited. That would make the Venza superior to its contemporaries like the Honda Passport, but unlike the V6-equipped Passport that can tow 5,000 lbs., the Venza is not rated for towing, so keep this in mind if you plan on hauling toys or heavy gear. If you heed your right foot, the Venza has no trouble achieving nearly 40 mpg combined. It’s not the quickest of the lot, but the Venza is not about sporty driving. You might think 219 horsepower is insufficient for a relatively large and hefty hybrid crossover, and you are right. Toyota claims the Venza can travel in front-wheel drive (100:0 front-rear torque distribution) at a constant speed, while the system can shift to 20:80 over slippery terrain. The drivetrain works seamlessly and varies the torque distribution depending on existing road conditions. There are two electric motors in the front and one in the back, effectively supplying the Venza with all-wheel grip via Toyota’s Electronic On-Demand AWD. The 2023 Toyota Venza remains motivated by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and three electric motors that collectively develop 219 horsepower. Efficient Hybrid Powertrain & All-Wheel Drive The Venza Nightshade Edition is available in Ruby Flare Pearl, Celestial Black, or Wind Chill Pearl paint. It also has an electrochromic sunshade that works like transition lenses. Unlike ordinary glass roofs, Star Gaze has a glass that switches between transparent and frost at your behest. Optional for the Nightshade is Toyota’s Star Gaze Panoramic Roof. It also gets LED fog lights (now standard in the base Venza LE), 19-inch gloss black alloy wheels, and black badging. Standard fare for the Nightshade Edition is an acrylic front grille trim, smoked chrome moldings, and blacked-out trim for the mirror caps, door handles, rocker panels, roof rails, and sharkfin antenna. The Venza is now available with the Nightshade Edition Package based on the mid-level XLE trim. The 2023 Toyota Venza remains part of the second-gen variant that resurfaced in 2021. But if all you want is a decent crossover with good fuel economy, the 2023 Venza is worth considering. Still, the 2023 Venza does have its fair share of drawbacks, mainly the tiny cargo area (courtesy of the hybrid-electric components) and sparse interior room. In other words, the new Venza is a RAV4 hybrid wrapped in a Lexus-esque body and infused with a more premium vibe and more desirable features than a comparable RAV4, like that groovy electrochromic glass roof. As usual, the Venza scores high in fuel economy with its standard hybrid powertrain derived from the Toyota RAV4. The 2023 Toyota Venza is the latest to receive the Nightshade Editon package that adds dark styling elements to Toyota’s hybrid SUV. Some features will be upgraded in the Venza over the RAV4 Hybrid as well, for instance the latter comes standard with a 7” infotainment display with an available 8” upgrade, where as the new Venza will offer a standard 8” screen and an available 12.4” enhancement.2023 Toyota Venza: Pricing & Availability Although not pictured in the table, the Venza is 5.7 inches longer than the RAV4 Hybrid, but 1.1 inches shorter. Although the Toyota Venza belongs to the larger segment, the RAV4 Hybrid actually offers just a little bit more space to fill with whatever you need to bring along with you. However, its Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system does differ slightly in the way that it works, as it can send up to 80% of power to the rear wheels when necessary, while the RAV4 Hybrid’s system can only send up to 50%.Īnother difference comes in terms of space. That’s why each vehicle is capable of generating the same amount of horsepower, and why Toyota is estimating it will achieve the same combined fuel economy. Both hybrid crossovers are built on the TNGA-K platform so that they deliver a refined driving experience, but they’re also underpinned by the same powertrain, the Toyota Hybrid System II. As you can tell from the table above, the two crossover utility vehicles are actually quite similar to one another.

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe looks and feels like a million bucks
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/the-2021-hyundai-santa-fe-looks-and-feels-like-a-million-bucks-2/
The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe looks and feels like a million bucks
Smile for the camera!
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Proponents of trickle-down economics argue that cutting taxes for the wealthy or large corporations benefits everyone because their extra money can be invested to create more jobs or pay higher wages. Of course, it’s dubious whether this actually makes any economic sense, but such a top-down approach does work in other fields, like the automotive industry. Case in point: the Hyundai Palisade. With oodles of refinement and an upscale interior, it’s one of our favorite three-row SUVs. Now, the Palisade’s all-around excellence trickles down to the smaller Santa Fe, which has been significantly updated for 2021.
Like
Potent and refined engine
Comfortable ride
Upscale interior
Don’t Like
Low-speed transmission performance
Lack of standard driver aids
The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe features mildly reworked exterior styling with a broader looking front end, fresh wheel designs and a few smaller tweaks. New powertrains are offered, too, including a 2.5-liter base engine as well as potent 2.5-liter turbo I4. A hybrid version is also available, plus there are more safety and convenience features. Finally, just like its big brother, the Santa Fe is now available in swanky Calligraphy trim. Inside and out, the vehicle feels expressive without being garish, a feat that’s tough to achieve.
Dressed in sultry Calypso Red paint, this top-of-the-line model does a convincing impression of a luxury vehicle. Its seats are trimmed with supple Nappa leather and the headliner and roof pillars are swaddled in a suede-like material. The Calligraphy also comes with a full-color head-up display, premium trim and express up and down rear windows, to name a few of its myriad enhancements. Sure, there are some hard plastics here and there, but the dashboard is mostly soft and there are miles of contrast-color stitching.
This adventurously designed interior is also extremely functional. The physical climate controls and other secondary switches for things like the audio system are super easy to see and reach, mounted on the Santa Fe’s upward-sloping center console. This is also where the push-button shifter lives, which is immediately intuitive. A skosh more storage space up top between the front seats would be nice, but there is an open bin underneath all those switches and knobs, the perfect place to stash a purse or small carry-out order.
Just like the Palisade, comfort is one of the Santa Fe’s strong suits. The Calligraphy model’s front bucket chairs, with their extendable lower cushions, are long-haul cushy, and so is the backseat. Passengers that don’t get to ride shotgun are still coddled by excellent accommodations, as the rear bench’s bottom cushion is a great height above the floor and there’s plenty of headroom and legroom to go around. The Santa Fe’s cargo capacity clocks in at 36.4 cubic feet behind the rear backrests. Fold them down and you get 72.1 cubes of junk-hauling space. That’s more room in each position than you get in a Chevy Blazer or Nissan Murano, though the Ford Edge and Honda Passport are slightly more capacious.
Is this a luxury-car interior? Nope, it’s just a Hyundai.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
As with passenger comfort and high-quality trimmings, there’s no shortage of available tech in this vehicle. Lower-end models now gain an 8-inch infotainment screen (1 inch larger than before), but fancier variants come with a 10.3-incher that also features embedded navigation. Limited and Calligraphy trims are graced with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, though this is optional on the midrange SEL trim. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range, though counterintuitively, they only connect wirelessly on the Santa Fe’s more basic grades. The up-level infotainment system is easily one of the better offerings available today, being both easy on the eyes and speedy. The user interface is also extremely intuitive and the system promptly responds to inputs, almost never stuttering or lagging. Really, there’s nothing to gripe about here, though the same can’t be said about the drivetrain.
The Santa Fe’s new 2.5-liter turbo-four is a real honey, super smooth and suspiciously silent. It cranks out 277 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, far more of each than either the base engine or the hybrid. This prodigious output gives the vehicle ample acceleration, serious scoot whether you’re taking off from a light or zinging down the highway. Despite this strong performance, the Santa Fe is also quite economical. With available all-wheel drive, this example is estimated to return 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined, though in mixed, real-world driving I’m getting around 24.5 miles out of each gallon of gasoline, better than the advertised median.
This frugal showing is aided by an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It shifts quickly and smoothly once the vehicle is moving, but it’s not all roses. Unfortunately, when starting off, the gearbox feels quite unnatural as it connects the engine to the rest of the driveline. Minor judders are detectable and there are little surges and sags, like it doesn’t respond linearly to throttle inputs. Can we just have the eight-speed torque-converter automatic that comes with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine? Please and thank you.
The Santa Fe’s 2.5-liter turbo-four is as potent as it is refined.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The Santa Fe’s transmission may be its biggest dynamic weakness, but the rest of this vehicle’s driving experience is pleasant. The interior is incredibly quiet and the ride buttery-smooth. Sure, crisper steering would be nice, as this SUV is anything but sporty, and the brake pedal is on the touchy side, though these are minor complaints.
The Santa Fe offers plenty of advanced driver aids, though several of the most desirable ones are not standard. The base SE model features automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and a driver attention monitor, though you have to step up to the SEL trim to get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Naturally, highfalutin Limited and Calligraphy models come with pretty much everything, additional goodies like Remote Parking Assist, lane centering and adaptive cruise control. Hyundai’s implementation of those last two items is among the best in the business. When engaged, the Santa Fe tracks like a monorail, never sawing at the steering wheel or losing track of where it is. The adaptive cruise control is similarly smooth and confidence inspiring, whether you’re in stop-and-go traffic or bombing down the interstate.
The redesigned Hyundai Santa Fe is an excellent all-around utility vehicle.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Thanks to its upscale interior, over-the-road refinement and avant-garde styling, the new Santa Fe is a screaming deal and an excellent midsize SUV, another home run for Hyundai.
Just like the three-row Palisade, the updated Santa Fe is an excellent all-around SUV, one that offers plenty of features and a near-luxury cabin in Calligraphy trim. You might expect this vehicle to cost a young fortune, but this is absolutely not the case. A base SE model, sans any extras, checks out for around $28,185 including destination fees, which are $1,185. But even the top-shelf example shown here is still an excellent value. As it sits, my tester stickers for $43,440 with just one option padding the bottom line, a $155 upcharge for carpeted floor mats.

Comma.ai launches Comma Two, a $999 kit that imbues cars with assisted driving features
Two years ago, analysts predicted that upwards of 10 million self-driving cars would hit the road by 2020. They weren’t the only ones — in 2015 and 2016, respectively, The Guardian and Business Insider proclaimed that people would become “permanent backseat driver[s],” riding in fully autonomous cars from 2020 “without needing any interaction from [drivers].”
Fast forward to today. Despite assurances that as many as 8 million driverless cars will be added to the road in 2025, even operations like that of Alphabet’s Waymo have yet to expand beyond selected metros. The reasons are regulatory as well as technological in nature, but expense plays a role. Conservative estimates peg the cost of outfitting cars at between $100,000 to 250,000 per car.
So why not go the do-it-yourself route? That’s the question George Hotz posed five years ago — he’s the American hacker best known for developing exploits that targeted Apple’s iOS operating system and reverse-engineering Sony’s PlayStation 3. In September 2015, Hotz founded Comma.ai with the goal of developing a semi-automated system — OpenPilot — that would improve cars’ visual perception and electromechanical motor control. Unlike most full-stack solutions in testing, it’s intended to replace OEM advanced driver-assistance systems, effectively imbuing cars with self-driving capabilities.
For the first time in its history, Comma.ai has an official presence at the Consumer Electronics Show. The company this week invited members of the press (including VentureBeat) to test-drive the latest version of its system — and to show off the Comma Two.
OpenPilot
OpenPilot’s development had a bit of a rocky start. The first version’s reveal in a Bloomberg article and video prompted a cease-and-desist letter from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which accused Comma.ai of testing a self-driving car in the state without a license. Subsequently, OpenPilot was packaged into a shippable device dubbed the Comma One, which again ran afoul of the authorities because of noncompliance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Under pressure from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, Comma One was canceled, and Comma.ai open-sourced OpenPilot on GitHub.
Much has changed. In the roughly three years since Comma.ai made OpenPilot available to the public, over 1,500 users have racked up more than 14 million autonomous miles collectively, half of which were driven autonomously. (That’s up from 10 million miles as of May 2019.) Moreover, they’ve forked the GitHub repository over 2,300 times, adding features like automatic lane change and support for older Tesla, Chrysler, and Jeep models.
Comma Two
Comma.ai previously sold the Eon Devkit, a self-contained and windshield-mounted modified OnePlus phone. It started at $599, and once OpenPilot was installed to it, it automatically recognized car models by analyzing CAN network traffic. (The presence of certain CAN messages and their lengths is an indication of the model year, car brand, car model, and trim.) Companion devices dubbed the Panda and Giraffe plugged into cars’ OBD-II ports to track RPMs, MPG, cornering G-force, battery life, and more, and to provide access to the communication buses and enable the Eon to interface with the car.
The Comma Two replaces the Eon, but it retains all of the Eon’s features and then some. That said, it ditches the Panda for a single-cord solution, and it’s slightly pricier at $1,000 (though it’s available on a payment plan through Affirm).
The first batch of 300 units are available for purchase today. They’ll begin shipping later in the month, Hotz says.
The Comma Two is powered via OBD-C as opposed to by battery, which Hotz says was a top complaint among current Eon owners, and it has a larger mount as well as a custom fan-based hardware cooling solution. Like the Eon, which used a camera to recognize drivers’ faces and decelerate if it detected those drivers were distracted, the Comma Two performs facial recognition. In point of fact, it’s in improved in that it leverages two infrared sensors as opposed to an RGB sensor, enabling it to work during nighttime.
Other highlights include front and back cameras, as well as a fourth CAN bus to connect the OBD-II port and a low-power mode that automatically shuts off the Comma Two after three days to save car battery.
The Eon was equipped with cellular service and a SIM card supplied by Comma.ai. Data was unlimited (though capped to 512Kbps), and users could spring for Comma Prime if they so chose, a $24 per month service that enables remote access (via T-Mobile) from anywhere and online storage of 14 days’ worth of drive data (compared with the standard three days). The Comma Two also taps cellular for connectivity and plays nicely with new and existing Comma Prime subscriptions, and it comes with a year’s worth of storage.
By default, OpenPilot uploads driving data in real time from the road-facing camera, CAN, GPS, inertial measurement unit, magnetometer, thermal sensors, and operating system to Comma.ai’s servers for machine learning training and development purposes. Much of this data can be accessed locally through the Comma Connect app for iOS and Android or through Explorer, an online dashboard of recent drives from which disengagements (i.e., instances when a driver took control from OpenPilot) can be annotated to help improve the system.
From within the app, Comma Two owners can remotely wake up the Comma Two and snap a picture from either the front- or rear-facing cameras. Additionally, they’re able to switch among multiple units on the fly and to view their real-time geographic locations.
Compatibility
OpenPilot isn’t compatible with every car under the sun. It only works with these models and model years:
Acura ILX (2016-2018) and RDX (2016-2018)
Buick Regal (2018)
Chevrolet Malibu (2017)
Volt (2017-2018)
Cadillac ATS (2018) and Pacifica (2017-2018)
GMC Acadia Denali (2018)
Holden Astra (2018)
Honda Accord (2016-2019), Civic (2017-2019), Civic Hatchback (2017-2019), CR-V (2015-2019), CR-V Hybrid (2017-2019), Fit (2018), Odyssey (2018-2019), Passport (2019), Pilot (2016-2019), and Ridgeline (2017-2019)
Hyundai Elantra (2017-2019), Genesis (2018), and Santa Fe (2019)
Jeep Grand Cherokee (2016-2019)
Kia Optima (2019), Sorento (2018), and Stinger (2018)
Lexus RX Hybrid (2016-2019) and ES Hybrid (2019)
Subaru Crosstek (2018) and Impreza (2019)
Toyota Avalon (2016-2018), Camry (2018-2019), C-HR (2017-2019), Corolla (2017-2020), Corolla Hatchback (2019), Highlander (2017-2018), Highlander Hybrid (2018), Prius (2017-2019), Prius Prime (2017-2020), Rav4 (2016-2019), Rav4 Hybrid (2017-2018), and Sienna (2018)
Equally critically, OpenPilot isn’t capable of fully autonomous driving on all road types in all conditions. It can currently handle lane centering on roads without clear marking thanks to machine learning algorithms trained with user data, and it can maintain a safe follow distance and drive in stop-and-go traffic without supervision.
But it’s complicated. On all supported cars, OpenPilot’s automated lane centering and lane keep assist replace the stock systems. Only on specific supported cars does the system’s adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning slot in for default, however, and on no model does OpenPilot take over things like auto high-beam, blind spot warning, and side collision warning.
Driving experience
So how’s the driving experience with the Comma Two? “Smooth sailing” sums it up. OpenPilot indeed maintains its lane position even when the markings aren’t obvious — or aren’t visible. In a construction site with cones on either side and on an unpaved road without dividing lines, we watched OpenPilot deftly keep centered and maintain a comfortable following distance from the car in front of it.
It doesn’t much matter whether the road ahead is straight or severely curved. OpenPilot used to scrape OpenStreetMap for road curvature and traffic data, but it doesn’t any longer — now, it’s smart enough to calculate the trajectory in real time and to ensure it doesn’t speed along that trajectory too violently.
In this respect, OpenPilot is akin to Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, Volvo’s Pilot Assist, and GM’s Super Cruise, the last of which is one of the few systems that offers hands-free driving thanks to an eye-monitoring infrared camera. But in contrast to Super Cruise, which only engages on about 130,000 miles of U.S. and Canadian highway that GM has mapped, OpenPilot theoretically works anywhere there’s a discernible road.
OpenPilot can change lanes automatically, but it requires signaling from drivers before it does so — they have to first switch on a turn signal and nudge the steering wheel in the direction they’d like to go. It smoothly merging while keeping pace with the traffic ahead in our brief experience. But Hotz noted that OpenPilot won’t prevent lane changes when cars are to the immediate left or right, in the Comma Two’s blind spot.
Of course, Comma Two and OpenPilot can’t anticipate every situation. An SUV rear-ended a hatchback during our driving demo, forcing Hotz — who was behind the wheel — to tap the brake and disengage the system. And OpenPilot doesn’t handle things like red lights or stop signs — at least not yet.
Safety
Whether OpenPilot can be considered truly safe is a semantics question, in part. The driverless car industry lacks an agreed-upon metric for safety — Noah Zych, head of system safety at Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, told Wired in an interview that miles traveled isn’t a particularly insightful measure without context like location. Derek Kan, U.S. secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, echoed that sentiment in remarks at a conference two years ago.
Companies like Intel’s Mobileye and Nvidia have proposed mathematical models that aim to codify good habits like giving other cars the right of way. Essentially, they’re decision-making policies in a motion-planning stack that monitor unsafe actions by analyzing real-time sensor data.
Comma.ai has a safety model of its own, which Hotz said involves several forms of regression testing. Commits aren’t merged to the OpenPilot codebase before they’ve met the test suite’s muster.
This aside, Comma.ai problematically hasn’t committed to regularly publishing any sort of statistics beyond miles driven, like disengagements or accidents. California’s Department of Motor Vehicles mandates that all companies testing autonomous cars report disengagements, but because Comma.ai doesn’t have a permit to test cars, it’s exempt from this requirement.
Hotz for his part asserts that the infrared sensors in Comma Two will improve safety substantially, as will the onboarding video customers are required to watch before they launch OpenPilot for the first time. On the subject of the former, a warning appears on the Comma Two’s screen if a driver diverts their eyes from the road for four seconds, and after six seconds, OpenPilot disengages and begins to slow down. (Unclicking the driver-side seat belt or opening the car door also disengages the system.)
For what it’s worth, we encountered only one disengagement — Hotz’s stop to avoid the accident — over roughly 7 miles and 25 minutes of driving  “We pushed on nuance [with this latest version of OpenPilot],” said Hotz. “Intersections have no lane lines — it’s unclear where you should go. [OpenPilot] follows the path that the human would follow.”
Backend improvements
On the backend side of the OpenPilot equation, new is a simulation environment called the Small Offset Simulator that loads in real-world routes and simulates deviations of them. “You can’t just take a lot of data and train a model to mimic the data, because that model doesn’t realize that if it takes action, the world will change,” said Hotz. “The only way to really do that is to build a simulator.”
Using a technique called projected geometry and generative adversarial networks (GANs), or two-part AI models comprising generators that synthesize data samples and discriminators that attempt to distinguish between the synthesized samples and real data, the simulator redraws scenes meters to the left or right or with curvature and other perturbations. Hotz said that the models within the Small Offset Simulator are now training on 200,000 minutes of driving data collected by Eon users.
It’s similar — but not quite the same — as the simulation environments deployed internally by Uber, Waymo, and others. GM’s Cruise, for instance, leverages a replay approach that involves extracting real-world sensor data, playing it back against the car’s software, and comparing the performance with human-labeled ground truth data. Cruise also engages in planning simulation, which lets the company’s data scientists create up to hundreds of thousands of variations of a scenario by tweaking variables like the speed of oncoming cars and the space between them.
Future developments
Going forward, Comma.ai plans to release new hardware on roughly a yearly cadence — Hotz believes its business model of selling devices at profit and eating the cost of software development is sustainable. (Comma.ai has raised $8.1 million in venture capital to date across two funding rounds, the most recent of which closed in April 2018.) As for OpenPilot, achieving a better end-to-end driving experience remains an acute area of focus for the engineering team.
“What we want to do is move away from [lead car following] and move to an end-to-end longitudinal [model],” he said. “One of the problems we as a company have trying to convey is, when it works well, you don’t even notice it. Our company mission is to solve self-driving cars while shipping intermediaries.”
But Comma.ai isn’t discouraging rivals from cloning its hardware and piggybacking off of OpenPilot. In fact, Hotz encourages it, just as he encourages those with proprietary solutions to compete with Comma.ai.
One such challenger — former Yahoo CTO John Hayes’ Ghost Locomotion — emerged from stealth last November promising an aftermarket self-driving kit to retrofit existing cars. Another — Cambridge, U.K.-based Wayve — claims its driverless cars self-improve by learning from safety driver interventions. Mobileye doesn’t sell a consumer product, but like Comma.ai, its driverless tech leans on cameras for autonomous decision-making. And then there’s Tesla, which recently release a preview of an active guidance system (Navigate on Autopilot) that navigates a car from a highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and making lane changes.
Hotz is unconcerned. “Mobileye is the Windows [of autonomous driving] that’s going to do Microsoft-style business development deals with big companies, Tesla’s the Mac that’s going to ship sexy hardware to consumers, and we’re the Linux,” he said. “Everybody should use us for whatever they want.”

March Mayhem Final: 2019 Chevrolet Blazer vs. 2019 Chrysler Pacifica
Among the many important decisions you might make during that first pregnancy is the second most expensive purchase for most of us: the family car. Judging from the semifinal results, you now know it’s time to trade in your old sedan that got you through college (though maybe grab the toga from the back seat for future spills).
Based on our final twosome, your heart might say, “I’m still in my 20s and I’m definitely still cool, even with a baby, so I should get that sporty, sharp-looking Chevrolet Blazer.” Your head says, “I have a business degree and know how to do a cost-benefit analysis, and the Chrysler Pacifica is specifically designed for people with my needs.” Which do you trust?
Gut instinct tells you not to buy more vehicle than you need. You only have the one kid on the way, after all. You read the semifinals and you know a two-row crossover like the Blazer seats five and drives like a sport sedan with twice the cargo capacity. Maybe when you have that second or third kid (or when you find out you’re having triplets) you’ll opt for the minivan.
MotorTrend’s March Mayhem is here! As part of our quest to find the best family car, we invited eight vehicles to compete in a winner-take-all bracket. After winning their conference championship against a similar vehicle in the first round and a fraternal rival in the second, the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS two-row crossover and the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica S Limited minivan face off in the finals for family-vehicle supremacy.
Quarterfinals:
Chrysler Pacifica vs. Honda Odyssey HERE
Subaru Ascent vs. Chevrolet Traverse HERE
Chevrolet Blazer vs. Honda Passport HERE
Nissan Altima vs. Toyota Camry HERE
Semifinals:
Chrysler Pacifica vs. Subaru Ascent HERE
Chevrolet Blazer vs. Nissan Altima HERE
Hang on, though. Most people have their second kid within a few years of their first but keep their vehicle for a decade. You’re going to need those extra seats sooner than you think. Even if you just want to take the spouse, the one kid, and the dog to the park, you’re going to start running out of room quickly. Kids require car seats, diaper bags, strollers, and other accessories, which all take up space. Oh, and maybe the grandparents are in town? You’re going to need room for them and all their stuff. Soon enough, the kid will have friends and sports equipment or instruments, and then what? Even with one kid, it’s not hard to imagine maxing out the two-row crossover.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The first baby isn’t even born yet. Is there anything a minivan like the Pacifica really does that much better besides haul cubic yards of athletic gear and potting soil? Yes, and you might remember it from the semifinals; the same disadvantages of a three-row crossover apply to a two-row.
Start with the obvious: doors. There isn’t a crossover on the market with doors that open more than 90 degrees, nor is there one with a door opening the size of a minivan’s sliding door. Whether it’s you loading the car seat or the kid, the kids loading themselves, or your aging parents getting in the back, the minivan’s bigger opening is invaluable. That’s especially important in parking lots or garages, where you might not be able to swing that door open 90 degrees. You might even wish the door didn’t swing open so far, lest your mini-me, still learning the concept of cause and effect, dings the car next to you (perhaps in your own garage).
There’s also the matter of operating said doors. Nearly every van and crossover offers a power tailgate, but no crossover under six figures offers power side doors. Whether your hands are full with baby, or your toddler wants to do it themselves, being able to push a button on the door, the pillar next to the door, the dash or map light console, or the key fob, or just making a kicking motion underneath it, means neither you nor the kid ever has to muscle the door open or closed.
So the minivan hauls stuff better and is easier to get in and out of, but isn’t it a penalty box? Doesn’t it hurt your soul just sliding behind the wheel of one? In the past, perhaps, but not anymore. To be certain, we took the finalists off the proving ground and out into the real world. Our trusty Car of the Year and SUV of the Year finalist loop in nearby Tehachapi provides 35 miles of city streets, country roads, freeways, twisting canyons, and mutilated pavement. Surely the Blazer, looking and driving like the Camaro of crossovers, would show off its quick first step and assert its dominance.
Or would it? Before we left, we subjected both the Pacifica and the Blazer to the same 55-mph emergency lane change test as in the semifinals. Each had proven itself substantially more stable and controlled than its similarly sized opponent. But if you were expecting the smaller, lighter, sportier Blazer to drive circles around the Pacifica, you’re in for a surprise. The two performed almost identically, with the sport-tuned Blazer RS handling the maneuver just slightly better.
Real streets only reinforced the test results. The Pacifica rides as well as the Blazer, handles nearly as well, charges onto the freeway as well, carries equivalent driver assistance and safety systems, is just as quiet inside, and is easier to see out of. In the past, owning a minivan was a capitulatory purchase, a choice made under duress because you had kids and this is what you do. Automakers like Chrysler were smart to recognize this and have designed vans that look and drive like the vehicles you wanted to buy while offering more practicality and convenience than any other segment.
Speaking of, it’s worth mentioning that no mainstream two-row crossover offers a rear-seat entertainment system.
But when starting a college fund for young Cierra or Michael, a family must consider the dollars and cents. Two-row crossovers come in multiple sizes, and the smaller you get, the less expensive and more fuel efficient they become. A large two-row, though, comes in at about the same price and fuel efficiency as a minivan—and the minivan delivers more for your money in terms of features. If saving gas and/or the planet is your top concern, there’s the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (and if you feel like you need all-wheel drive, the Toyota Sienna AWD).
A final factor in our championship battle is the experience of our peers. Among us we have friends also in their 20s and 30s—some on them on their first kid, some on their fourth—most of whom tried to make a go of it with two- and three-row crossovers but were finally tempted by the practicality of the minivan. Not a single defector regrets their decision; in fact, they wish they’d chosen a minivan from the start.
It’s not impossible to make a two-row crossover a family vehicle, as many families (and automotive product planners) will attest. They’re designed to be family friendly as best as the form factor allows.
Minivans, however, require no compromises or optional equipment or packaging tweaks because they’re designed from the ground up for this specific purpose. What’s more, the minivan is virtually future-proof; as your family grows, you’ll rest easy knowing your kids (and their stuff) will fit. The minivan will bring the baby home from the hospital, and 18 years later that van will deliver your offspring to college just as easily. It’s a choice between making it work and having it work, and that’s not much of a choice at all. The Pacifica got game.

The Government Shutdown Might Delay These New Vehicles
As President Trump and Congress feud over the government shutdown, regulatory agencies that test and approve vehicles for sale in the U.S. remain closed. That could impact the launch dates for several much-anticipated vehicles slated for launch in the next several months. This buzzkill is in contrast to the acres of shiny new vehicles unveiled at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which is open to the public from January 19–27. What’s more, automakers are gearing up for next month’s Chicago show that bills itself as the largest consumer show in America.
Before a new (or significantly reengineered) car can go on sale, it must be certified by the federal government. Under the Clean Air Act, this is the responsibility of the Environmental Protection Agency; the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor does the verification. But the lab is among the agencies not being funded during the shutdown, which began on December 22 and has now stretched nearly a month. On the bright side, many new vehicles awaiting certification are not slated to go on sale until spring and the majority are fall launches, so while automakers will grown increasingly concerned if the shutdown continues for too long, in most cases there is still time before panic sets in.
The unease is a bit stronger for diesel-powered vehicles. The emissions-reporting scandal is still fresh in American minds, and many automakers have canceled or significantly reduced their plans to offer diesel-fueled vehicles in the U.S.—the exception being large pickups that remain huge profit-makers for Detroit. Indeed, some diesel-powered vehicles have faced long wait times for certification even prior to the shutdown as federal agencies have been more meticulous in the wake of the cheating scandal.
Below we’ve gathered a list of the vehicles that the shutdown could affect; read on for more information on their statuses.
Ram
When the shutdown hit, the EPA had completed the federal emission testing and certified the 2019 Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup, but had not finished testing tailpipe emissions for the Cummins diesel version of the 3500. That process is on hold, FCA CEO Mike Manley confirmed at the auto show. Both trucks are scheduled to go on sale this spring. The automaker says other vehicles are undergoing their normal quality validation testing and no shipments are not being delayed at this time. That includes the 2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel that is still in the certification process.
Jeep
A diesel-powered Grand Cherokee variant is still in line awaiting its turn for certification. The new Jeep Gladiator midsize pickup is not due until spring, so there is no impact yet to that highly anticipated model.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen will show the new Jetta GLI (a standard 2019 Jetta is pictured) next month at the Chicago Auto Show. It is slated to launch in March. Executives think the launch will remain on schedule—if be a bit tight—if federal employees return to work by the end of January, but a delay for the car looms.
Ford
Ford has a lot of vehicles (GT500, Explorer, Escape, and Lincoln Aviator) slated to go on sale this year, and many of them are in the queue for certification. Nothing is due in the next few months so no delays at this time. But if the shutdown is prolonged, there will be concerns. The 2020 Ford Explorer is due in June, while the Aviator also goes on sale this summer. The GT500 is not due until fall. We have not yet seen the new Escape yet, so it likely has more time.
Cadillac
Cadillac’s big XT6 crossover is due this spring so there is still time before it feels any impact as long as the backlog does not become onerous. GM officials say they have no launch delays at this time but, like other automakers, are currently awaiting decisions in the certification process for a number of 2019 and 2020 models.
Porsche
There is some concern that the mid-cycle refresh of the volume-leading Macan could be delayed, as it is slated to go on sale in March. Same applies to the Cayenne hybrid. The next-generation 911 isn’t coming to the U.S. until July or August, so there should be plenty of time for testing to be conducted.
Kia
Kia’s new Telluride three-row crossover goes on sale this spring but no reports of delays at this time.
Hyundai
The three-row 2020 Hyundai Palisade CUV will be available this summer. At this point, officials say no Hyundai model is on hold awaiting EPA certification due to the shutdown.
Honda
Nothing from Honda is being impacted. The new Passport goes on sale next month but is already certified.

2018 LA Auto Show preview
New Post has been published on https://www.articletec.com/2018-la-auto-show-preview/
2018 LA Auto Show preview
The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show was a good one, with more new cars, trucks and SUVs than one could easily shake a stick at. AutoMobility LA, as it’s also known, proved why it’s one of the most important auto shows in the calendar year by bringing out something new to entice just about everyone who loves cars. Anyone who sets foot in the Los Angeles Convention Center from Nov. 30 to Dec. 9 during the show’s public days will not be disappointed.
While auto shows often tend to end up focusing on a single vehicle class — think SUVs at the Chicago Auto Show or exotics at Geneva — the LA show didn’t seem to this year. But, as we learned from Seinfeld, something lacking a central focus can still be highly entertaining. With debuts ranging from the highly anticipated Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator pickup to the next Kia Soul, Mazda3, Porsche 911 and all-new Hyundai Palisade SUV, Roadshow’s staff found themselves pretty busy putting their butts in all the new seats.
Here’s our roundup of the most important debuts so that you’ll know what to look out for if you find yourself in LA or if you find yourself shopping for a new ride in a few months. For even more detailed look, be sure to visit our 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show landing page — it’s a convenient way to access all the in-depth coverage of all the individual models that we looked at this week.
Audi
The Audi E-Tron GT is still a concept car — and holy hell is it a good-looking one — though it will lead to a full production model that launches in late 2020. Its powertrain technology is closely related to that in the forthcoming Porsche Taycan, and that’s a good thing. The key specs that you need to know: It’s got a 90-kWh battery pack giving it a 248-mile range, as well as 590 total system horsepower and a 0-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. The E-Tron GT will help Audi get toward its goal of selling 20 electrified models by 2025, and if more of them look like this, then we’re all for it.
Bentley
We already love the new Bentley Continental GT, and now there’s a fabulous convertible version that can do 207 miles per hour. The top, which Bentley says keeps the cabin 3 decibels quieter than in the old Conti GT convertible, can open or close in just 19 seconds when traveling at speeds up to 30 mph. Under the hood is a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, good for 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The convertible is 375 pounds heavier than the coupe, but will still get to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The new Conti GT made its debut in Los Angeles during the week of the show, but strangely, was not at the show itself.
BMW
BMW debuted its little heart out with a full lineup of hot new luxo-missiles, the most important of which is the M340i xDrive. BMW gave us a glimpse of the 330i at the Geneva Motor Show, and our man Steven Ewing got a chance to get behind the wheel of the new G20-generation 330i at the Nurburgring. This LA debut showed us the most aggressive version (so far) of the next 3 Series, which will make 369 horsepower from its turbocharged straight-six. After seeing it in the metal, we can confirm that it’s much more interesting in person, with its more aggressive exterior and interior.
BMW also had the new 8 Series Convertible on hand along with the Vision iNext concept (which still looks like a dye pack exploded inside) and its full-size, three-row X7 SUV, which you can read more about here.
Fiat
Fiat’s subcompact 500X crossover SUV has been on sale in North America since 2016, but it hasn’t quite caught fire with consumers (maybe it would if it looked more like the Multipla from the late 1990s and early 2000s). For 2019, a refreshed model debuts with slightly different looks, a new engine, standard all-wheel drive and a greatly simplified model range.
Slight downsizing has occurred in the engine bay, where the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine or 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine has been replaced with a single 1.3-liter turbo unit. Despite the size reduction, the new engine actually produces a lot more torque than its predecessors: 210 pound-feet (versus 184 pound-feet in the 1.4-liter or 175 in the 2.4-liter). That should make it feel sprightlier than last year’s model, despite the fact that horsepower remains modest at 177.
For 2019, the six-speed manual transmission has been nixed, meaning it’s nine-speed automatic or nothing. Front-wheel-drive configurations have also been discontinued.
On the plus side, a newly upgraded Uconnect 4 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, and adaptive cruise control and front park assist are now standard.
Honda
Honda’s Passport expired in 2002, but the nameplate has been resurrected (with 100 percent less Isuzu) as a two-row, five-passenger crossover that slots in sizewise between the CR-V and the Pilot, though it’s built on the same Honda Global Light Truck platform used for the Pilot and Ridgeline. The Honda Passport will launch early next year with rugged-adjacent looks and a 3.5-liter V6 engine churning out 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. It’ll be able to tow as much as 5,000 pounds if optioned correctly, and Honda will offer all manner of roof-mounted racks and accessories.
Honda sees the Passport competing with the likes of the Nissan Murano and revitalized Ford Edge, though Honda’s entry does seem a little more rugged than those entries.
Hyundai
This year Hyundai debuted the 2020 Palisade, a new three-row, midsize crossover, and gave the first one to a couple who adopted four orphaned siblings. This isn’t Hyundai’s first crack at a three-row SUV — you may recall that the short-lived Veracruz fit that bill, followed by the more successful three-row Santa Fe and its recently renamed twin, the Santa Fe XL — but it does seem like an attractive and well-considered option.
Hyundai recently told Roadshow that the midsize SUV segment moves about 1.5 million units per year in North America, so it will be interesting to see how many of those sales the Palisade will capture when it hits dealers next summer.
Jeep
If this year’s LA Auto Show was about one thing, it was the 2020 Gladiator pickup truck. Jeep hasn’t offered a pickup truck in its lineup since the Cherokee-based MJ Comanche pickup of the late ’80s and early ’90s and if the internet’s reaction to it is any kind of barometer, it’s going to be a hit.
While it’s easy to write off the Gladiator as just a Wrangler with a pickup bed, there are a bunch of differences. For instance, it’s got a unique five-link rear suspension setup and can tow much more than the standard Wrangler, a segment-best 7,650 pounds and a payload of up to 1,600 pounds. A 3.6-liter V6 engine is standard, but we know that a turbodiesel will be offered at a later date. Don’t hold your breath for the turbo four-cylinder version.
Other Wrangler-derived conveniences and capabilities transfer to the Gladiator, such as the folding windshield with available removable hardtops and a folding soft top, plus the ability to ford 30 inches of water when you elect the tough Rubicon model. Mopar also showed off a ton of awesome accessories that will help make your Gladiator unique on the trail.
Kia
Kia brought the new, third generation of the Soul to the LA show. It has sharper styling, more tech and even an X-Line variant with a slightly more rugged look (read: black plastic fender trim). Powertrain choices comprise a 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter Nu inline-four and a 201-hp, 1.6-liter turbo option. Kia also introduced the 2020 Soul EV, which has a 64-kWh battery pack that should yield a driving range of at least 200 miles, though we’re still waiting on an exact number. Speaking of electric Kias, there’s also a new Niro EV. Like the Soul EV, it has a 64-kWh battery pack and a motor rated for 201 horsepower; Kia says it will return 239 miles of range on a single charge. The hamsters, thankfully, were nowhere to be seen.
Lexus
The Toyota Land Cruiser-based Lexus LX 570 is old, though it has received three face-lifts over the past 11 years. Rather than bringing a redesign to the LA Auto Show, Lexus is just showed off the 2019 LX with a new appearance package called the Inspiration Series. In a nutshell, you’re dealing with an ordinary LX 570, but “murdered out” as the kids say, with blacked-out 21-inch wheels and a black grille, along with several other dark bits to peg the sinister meters. The Inspiration Series also pegs the price alarms with its $100,420 MSRP, but that’s due to a lot of bundled-in optional features.
Only 500 units of the LX Inspiration Series will be made, so place your orders now. While you’re at it, you can learn more about this special SUV here.
Lincoln
First shown in concept form this past March at the New York International Auto Show, the Lincoln Aviator was the belle of the ball with its head-turning looks and cutting-edge features. Now the production 2020 Aviator has been fully revealed, with three rows of seating, rakish design and two powertrain options.
Buyers can pick between a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, with either rear- or all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid option is rated for 450 horsepower and 600 pound-feet, though Lincoln hasn’t yet offered any details on electric driving range or efficiency. Other luxurious and high-tech features include the ability to use your smartphone as the car’s “key,” a four-corner air suspension that uses a camera to “read” the road and react to bumps proactively, a 28-speaker Revel audio system and Lincoln’s CoPilot360 Plus active-safety suite. The fact that Lincoln used the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the Aviator’s warning tones also truly resonates with our inner car nerds.
Mazda
The fourth-generation 2019 Mazda3 is now here, with both sedan and hatchback versions that follow the styling language previewed by the Mazda Kai concept shown at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The new car will go on sale in early 2019.
There are lots of changes beneath the surface, too. The Mazda3 base engine will still be a 2.5-liter inline-four, with either manual or automatic transmissions with six speeds. The 3 is also the first production Mazda to use the company’s Skyactiv-X compression-ignition engine, which uses a supercharger and a mild-hybrid motor assist. As if that’s not enough, the Mazda3 also boasts an upgraded 8.8-inch infotainment system and an infrared eye-tracking Driver Monitoring System that can tell if the driver is looking away from the road.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-AMG used the LA show to reveal the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro, which is an even more bonkers version of the already certifiable AMG GT R. There’s no power increase, with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 still putting out 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, but the GT R Pro benefits from a revised coilover suspension, adjustable anti-roll bars, carbon-ceramic brakes and retuned dynamic engine mounts. It also adds the AMG Dynamics stability control system, which has Basic, Advanced, Pro and Master modes.
Along with the Pro, of course, AMG has updated all versions of the GT coupe and convertibles with tweaks like restyled headlights, a new rear diffuser, a fully digital instrument cluster and some other interior switchgear changes. Oh, and those vents on top of the fenders are totally making the Roadshow staff swoon.
Mini
Ever since the first Mini arrived in 1959, the brand has been no stranger to special editions. Yet another one will make its North American premiere at the 2019 LA Auto Show. The Mini John Cooper Works Knights Edition takes a run-of-the-mill John Cooper Works Hardtop and drizzles it with a black and silver shining-armor theme.
The Knights Edition also features a John Cooper Works variable exhaust straight out of the accessories catalog that will let you drive stealthily or broadcast to the world that you’re fine with being small and loud, like Gilbert Gottfried. Read more about the John Cooper Works Knights Edition here.
Nissan
Nissan is updating its “four-door sports car” for the 2019 model year, giving the Maxima a slightly revised look inside and out, as well as extra safety technology on the inside. There’s also a new Platinum Reserve style package and a new orange interior stitching for the SR trim level. The car still uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine that sends 300 horsepower to the front wheels. Similarly, the 2019 Nissan Murano crossover receives an update with new lights, new interior trim pieces and a new grille design. It also adds more safety technology, and even diamond-quilted leather in the top-tier Platinum model.
Porsche
Southern California has long been Porsche’s most important market, so it’s only fitting that the sports car maker would choose LA to unveil the next generation of its most storied model, the 911. The 2020 911 debuted in Carrera S and 4S guises, with a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six engine rated for 443 horsepower, which is 23 more than before. A new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch is your only transmission choice at launch, but Porsche promises a manual is on the way later.
At first blush the new 911 may not look that different than its predecessor, but the car is 1.77 inches wider up front with a bumper and headlight treatment reminiscent of the 993-generation 911 of the mid-1990s. It also has flush-mounted electric door handles and restyled, wide taillights. Extra technologies include features like a Wet Mode, which will adjust the stability and braking systems when it detects water on the road, and standard precollision braking.
Rivian
Electric-vehicle startup Rivian is used the LA show to reveal its R1T pickup truck and its R1S SUV. The pickup claims a 400-plus-mile range and a 0-60 time under 3 seconds, as well as impressive towing and payload ratings. The R1S is a three-row luxury crossover that is also designed for lots of off-roading. It’ll use the same motors and battery packs as the truck, though its driving range should be a little longer, at up to 410 miles of range if you elect the 180-kWh battery pack. When production time comes, Rivian has pledged to build its vehicles at the former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois. The R1T is due in fall 2020 and the R1S should come in early 2021.
Toyota
This is a huge year for Toyota at the LA Auto Show, with two major bread-and-butter debuts in the form of the all-wheel-drive Toyota Prius, which adds an electric motor to its rear axle to help it lure people away from crossovers, and the all-new 2020 Corolla Sedan, which also adds a hybrid powertrain for the first time in the US market. Those are all important debuts as they’re big sellers for Toyota and now will be even more appealing.
On top of that, Toyota is showing off the sporty-ish TRD versions of the Avalon and Camry.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen’s debut at the I.D. Buzz Cargo, the work-van version of the passenger van that debuted last year. In addition to looks that force you to be happy, the I.D. Buzz Cargo features a passenger compartment with three-across seating along with an electric driving range approaching 350 miles. The one at the show was gussied up to look like a racing support van and it made us feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.
We have a ton of additional information about the I.D. Buzz Cargo van, which you can check out here.
Volvo
Volvo brought a virtual reality demo of its fancy-pants 360c concept, a driverless car designed to leave the sensor hardware carbuncles behind for a smoother, less autonomous-looking (that is, more attractive) appearance. Other than that, Volvo isn’t planning to have any other production cars on display. It did, however, have a pile of Amazon boxes for people to sit on, so look forward to that, true believers.
Our editor-in-chief, Tim Stevens, recently got up close and personal with this innovative machine. You can read more about the autonomous 360c here.

What cars are best to have for the lowest insurance?
I am 21, and I am rather sick of catching the bus everywhere lol, especially this past winter. I know my insurance is going to be high, It's also pretty hard to keep a job since many buses stop running around 9pm. My friend told me any time after May is a good time to buy a car because most people already got their refunds. I am willing to take out a loan if a new/newer car is the best to go with since I have pretty decent credit (724 Experian). If I have a car I could work and go to school more easily. What year, make, model, etc. I also want to save on gas. For the new cars, I would like the Chevy Volt, the Ford Fiesta, Honda Civic (hybrid if possible), or the toyota prius (hybrid maybe). For used, I am not sure since I don't know what year to look in, but I was looking at the Honda civic, toyota prius, and the mazda mazda6. I also don't know if foreign cars would raise the premium. I read that if you are getting a car around 10 years old, only buy honda or toyota cars. Also should I look into mechanical breakdown insurance and/or should I get a warranty for the car along with the auto insurance? How much do they cost? Thanks.""

Car insurance too expensive. Help. Urgent?
So basically. Im an 18 year old male. I passed my driving test in june 2013. My car insurance is too high. Now normally i wouldnt care but the reason i am asking this question is because. Where i live the nearest shop is 30 mins away walking. My family need someone to do the shopping as we cannot keep going back and forth everyday. We basically starve some days as sufficient food is too heavy to carry. My father is very sick and has been for 2 years. Because the hospital is so far away he barely is able to go to his appointments. And finally i use the train to get to my university which im fine with but i get bullied everyday physically on the train. I am too scared to report this to anyone. Now im not someone who would mess about in my car or speed etc. I am a very safe driver. My cheapest quote was on a Daewoo Matiz and the quote was 6000!! So i cleary cannot afford that. I have looked into the black box scheme but most insurers wont provide that service in my area. So my question is does anyone know of any insurance companies who do specialise in giving cheaper quotes. Or any cars that tend to be cheaper to insure. Or even any tricks that may help bring down the price. Please dont answer with stuff like you dont need a car or get a black box. I am litterally fed up and feel like a failure. I dont know what to do. I even slit my wrists now as it is toi much to bare. Also i cant go one anyones insurance as i dont have anyone to ask and my dad cant drive due to his illnes

How to convince parents to let me have auto insurance?
I've had my license for a little over three months now. However, I have no insurance, and therefore cannot drive (in California). Their reasoning is that I am an unsafe driver which I disagree with because I quite easily passed my driving test at the DMV and always think before I do anything when I drive. However, they seem firm on their decision... It's a bit frustrating having my license for so long but still being unable to drive. I'm tired of having to always ask friends for a ride or my parents; I just want a taste of independence. Of course, I'm not trying to be too arrogant or stubborn, I've respected my parent's decision, it's just bugging me a bit now haha. I offered to do a six-month plan instead of a year plan since I'm heading off to college in Septemberish. I'm about to turn 18 in a couple weeks also. Does anyone have any advice?""

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.4 and 2.0T First Test: Cooler Heads Prevail
This “First Test” actually marks the second time we’ve tested these two 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe variants, but the first time out—at our 2019 SUV of the Year festivities—conditions were so beastly hot in our high desert test location that we didn’t fully trust our results. Sure enough, the evidence suggests our 2.0-liter turbo Santa Fe was suffering a major case of heat stroke in the 98-degree swelter and thin high desert air.
The SAE J1349 weather correction formula we use to normalize all test results to room temperature dry air at sea level conditions has proven to be impressively accurate at correcting for widely variable conditions on naturally aspirated cars. It’s also proven competent at correcting for reasonable temperature and pressure deviations on turbo- and supercharged vehicles and hybrids. But when an engine and turbo intercooler circuit get too badly heat-soaked, the engine controller starts pulling spark advance to prevent knock, which is hard to compensate for with math. That’s when you end up with a 235-hp, 260-lb-ft turbocharged engine that can’t keep up with its 185-hp, 178-lb-ft naturally aspirated sibling.
All vehicles tested were loaded to Ultimate trim spec, and both the hot and cool 2.0-liter turbos feature HTRAC all-wheel drive while the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated cars are both front-driven. Despite still enjoying a 3.5-pounds-per-horsepower advantage on paper, in the desert the turbo trailed the 2.4-liter by 0.7 second to 60 mph (9.6 versus 8.9 seconds) and by 0.4 second and 1.5 mph through the quarter mile (17.1 seconds at 82.8 mph versus 16.7 at 84.3).
The results of our winter test session at California Speedway reverse that outcome, with the turbo beating its down-market sibling to 60 mph by 0.8 second (7.8 versus 8.6 seconds) and by 0.5 second and 4.4 mph in the quarter (16.0 seconds at 88.9 mph versus 16.5 at 84.5). Was the desert turbo’s poor performance entirely attributable to inadequate weather correction, or were other electronic or mechanical gremlins to blame? We may never know.
What we can say with greater certainty now is that the Santa Fe probably won’t win many drag races against its competitors in this burgeoning class of crossovers that are slightly larger and more substantial than the Tucson/RAV4/CR-V compacts without featuring third-row seating. (Hyundai had planned to sell a Santa Fe diesel with a tiny third row, but that idea has been shelved.) Prime competitors now include the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano, with the Chevy Blazer and Honda Passport arriving soon. Size- and/or price-wise the Kia Sorento and Dodge Journey could also be considered, though each offers a vestigial third row.
All Nissan Muranos get V-6 power that’ll run rings around the 2.0-liter turbo Santa Fe in any weather, logging 0–60 times in the low sevens. The base Ford Edge 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine outruns the up-level Santa Fe 2.0T by a tenth to 60, and of course the Edge ST’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost blows all competitors into the weeds (6.1 seconds). As for the Sorento and Journey, their V-6s are quicker than Hyundai’s 2.0T, and their naturally aspirated 2.4-liters are slower than Hyundai’s. We have yet to test a Blazer or Passport (they’re coming very soon), but both will feature V-6s and nine-speed automatics that look poised to dice with the Murano. Even the Blazer’s unboosted 2.5-liter four-cylinder rental-fleet powertrain boasts a 6 percent weight-to-power advantage over the 2.4-liter Santa Fe and nine transmission ratios versus Hyundai’s eight. Subjectively, a slight buzziness to the Hyundai engines compares unfavorably with the smoothness of the competitor V-6s, and sadly it’s not offset by a fuel economy payoff—at 19/24 mpg city/highway, the turbo is rated lower than most rival V-6s. (At 22/29 mpg, the 2.4-liter ranks near the top of the pack.)
On the handling front, the Santa Fe turbo’s lighter weight stands it in pretty good stead. The Santa Fe 2.0 outruns the mainstream Muranos and Edges around our figure-eight course with a 27.2-second elapsed time at an average g-vector of 0.63. (The Edge ST does the circuit in 26 flat at 0.70 g.) The pokier front-drive Santa Fe 2.4 on taller sidewalls (60-series 18s versus the 2.0T’s 55-series 19s) registered a back-of-the-pack 28.9-second, 0.58g lap time. Again, subjectively several editors found fault with the slow response and “fake torque” feel in both variants’ steering during lane-change maneuvers, and our figure-eight driver Walton reported copious body roll in both variants.
Buyers less concerned about their CUV’s performance in the cut ’n’ thrust of traffic will still delight in the Santa Fe’s interior packaging, which boasts best-in-class front seat spaciousness and the best ratio of interior passenger and cargo space to exterior body size. Hyundai also ladles on the safety and driver-assistance technology pretty liberally, as well, though the automatic emergency braking system needs recalibration. It will not allow the vehicle to follow closely in a line of traffic trying to make a left turn without repeatedly lurching to a stop, spilling coffee and throwing briefcases to the floor. Behavior of the adaptive cruise control system also seemed more timid and hesitant than usual about resuming a set speed after obstacles cleared.
Value remains a Hyundai strong suit, with prices ranging from $30,345 to $35,345 for the 2.4-liter Santa Fes and from $35,245 to $39,845 for the 2.0-liter variants—all of which can be had with front- or all-wheel drive. By comparison, Murano base prices run from $32,315 to $46,175 while Edges’ span from $36,390 to $43,450. Just be prepared to be a little patient in your Santa Fe turbo when the mercury soars.
