I can easily solve the Dodleston Messages

here's a rundown of events for context

Now the main reason for either side arguing their case

is the fact that at the time there was no internet

so none of the messages

could have been sent or received remotely

this means that whoever was involved

had to have full access to the house where this took place

this both puts the residents under scrutiny

but if what they said is to be taken as fact

makes it rather difficult for that to be the case

but what if i told you

that at the time the messages were appearing

there was in fact a version of the internet

one where messages could indeed be sent and received

in much the same fashion as is reported to have taken place

let me tell you about the Micronet

an early forerunner to the internet

that wouldn't you know it

is only accessible via the exact specifications

that the computer in the story was set up to use

and though not available to people's homes at the time

was available to almost any school at the time

you know

school being the place where

they had acquired the computer in the story

so is it so far fetched to believe that

they unwittingly hooked up the machine to the micronet

by simply mimicking the way

that the computer had been set up in the school previously

this unintentionally connecting their home computer

via the region's local micronet server

to another set up in the same school where they got theirs

and not being that technically literate

since the micronet was was fairly unknown at the time

were actually connecting to each other

via the early email system they used

which by the way

operates by uploading and downloading text files

rather than the dedicated networks we use now

i mean you'd need to have the original computer's id code

but if you were using that computer at school

prior to it being replaced later

you would have known what the code is

simply because it's visible on screen

when the machine starts up

that would then allow you to transfer files

directly from your machine at the school

to the machine at their home

without them even having to log into the online service

it also means that the files they store on their drive

could be accessed via the school

allowing the individual there to listen in as well

often within local networks at the time

if someone wanted to remain anonymous

they would use their birthday AS a username

i know it's not very good security

but people were largely unaware of that stuff back then

2109 could simply be a person

that was born on the 21st of November

or someone for which that date held significance

well for a start

Feargal Sharkey released a very popular song on that date

and wouldn't you know it

but said individual

was somewhat of a local celebrity

within the Micronet scene at the time

so it's not unlikely to assume

someone on the micronet

would use that date at the time

as their username

considering the first report of the messages

in the local newspaper

appears at the 29th of December that year

this is kinda likely don't you think?

Feargal Sharkey had just released his follow up song

to his greatest hit ever

on December 23rd

which of course is

EXACTLY A WEEK BEFORE

not to mention Feargal appeared on TV

singing his chart topping song

just 2 days after on Dec 25th

in fact one thing i never see mentioned in this

is how 2109's writing style

seems to follow the exact same cryptic writing style

and general rhythm

as the lyrics of basically any Feargal Sharkey song

and i'm not suggesting it's the artist themselves

but it could quite clearly be an avid fan

and certainly the date of November 21st

would have been very much in the public consciousness

at least a week prior to the news article's release

which in all fairness

is probably when the article itself was written

now wouldn't it be the greatest coincidence

if also within a few days prior to that

a historical research group

had passed through the area

one with a lot of knowledge of the local area

and the kind of language used at the time

well...

The registers of the Chapel have been indexed by the Dodleston Family History Group and are available on microfiche at the Cheshire Record Office.

Formed in 1985, this is a small research group of some 12 to 15 members who meet at roughly monthly intervals in each other's homes during the winter months and have visits to local places of interest during the summer.

i think this explanation is fairly clear cut

Thoughts about The Dodleston Messages, Part III

The points that started this train of thought,

• The future person saying that time travel is like a scale, to send someone back in time, someone from that time has to switch places with them and be sent to the future. • Aly bringing up Alchemy

In FullMetal Alchemist, there is The Law of Equivalent Exchange.

In order for someone to transmute something, something of equal value must be given in exchange.

Water can be turned into wine, silver into gold, etc. But something cannot be created from nothing.

The story begins with the protagonists learning a harsh lesson about equivalent exchange. Two brothers try to resurrect their mother with alchemy in a way that visually resembles the occult performing necromancy. Instead, they create a monstrosity that barely resembles a human and dies right away. One brother loses his entire body and the other, his leg. The remaining brother then has to give up his arm in order to attach his brother's soul to a suit of armor.

Later we see that the brother's body is trapped behind a gate and a strange spirit who claims to be ALL (like HIM) has the arm and leg of the other. Like, they did bring a body into this world, but to do so, another had to take its place in the spirit world (like the first point from the podcast).

It also made me think of abductions

and the theory that Aliens are just us from the future. Perhaps abductions are really just people being plucked from the present and taken to the future, in order for someone from the future to come here and study us, or whatever they are here to do. Like an Indrid Cold (Grinning Man) kind of situation.

DODLESTON COMPUTER CHANNELS GHOST

In November 1984, before home computers and long before email, Ken Webster and Debbie Oakes were receiving electronic messages from another century. The couple lived in a cottage in Dodleston, Britain, and after renovating, they began to experience signs of a poltergeist—things being moved and rearranged. One day Ken, who was a teacher, borrowed a computer from his school and brought it home. On the screen appeared a very strange message, which the couple thought was some kind of a joke and ignored.

A few weeks later, Ken borrowed a different computer, and another, more in-depth letter appeared. It began like this:

Wot strange wordes thou speke, although I muste confess the I hath also bene ill-schooled... thou art a goodly man who hath fanciful woman who dwel in myne home ...'twas a greate cryme to hath bribed myne house.

In the 1500s, Tomas Harden, as the correspondent became known, had lived in a dwelling on the same site as Ken and Debbie's house. Over the next two and a half years, he wrote them more than three hundred communications. Sometimes the messages appeared on blank paper or on the floor, written in chalk. In all, Ken borrowed more than ten different computers, and Tomas used all of them.

A hoax was ruled out. Notes appeared on a computer supplied by an independent investigator, who left it locked, in a sealed room, in the cottage. A linguist, Peter Irinder, verified that the language used was appropriate for the time period that Tomas claimed to be from. Trinder thought it doubtful that anyone would apply the energy needed to learn the linguistic nuances of the era, saying, "The amount of effort involved in the process beggars belief.”

The case of an allegedly haunted 1980s computer that started communicating with a teacher in archaic English has baffled paranormal investigators for over 35 years. Known as the Dodleston messages, they were a series of communications a teacher received on a BBC microcomputer in 1985. Ken Webster wrote about his alleged first hand experiences in a book called The Vertical Plane.

It was the beginning of the Sixteenth Century and, although Britain was gradually emerging from the Dark Ages, superstition was still rife, a time when “witchcraft” was greatly feared. So it was little wonder that the villagers of medieval Dodleston decided to burn down a cottage when they thought that the occupant, Lukas Wainman, had been involved in devilish activities, there. But, why did they think that? Because Lukas was using a devilish "device" to communicate with what, he believed, were humans from the distant future. So, what was this "device"? Lukas had been dragged to court by the arresting sheriff, Thomas Fowlhurst. We can imagine Fowlhurst struggling to explain what the "device" was to the judge: "It’s a yellow box with lots of black buttons, each marked with a letter of the alphabet. And, near the front of the box, there are three glowing lights… which is why Lukas calls it his ‘leems boyste’ [lights box]. Sometimes, words radiate from the box, messages from these future devils. And, even scarier, when you’re near Lukas’ Box of Lights, you only have to think of a reply, and your words mysteriously appear in the air, too, and those devils in the future can actually read them! It’s witchcraft!" He added, "And there’s another entity, also from the future, called 2109." He said that he was running an experiment with time using something called tachyons, an experiment that wasn’t fully under his control and, as a result, evil spirits, poltergeists, have been let loose in Dodleston. The 1984 "devils" were Ken Webster and Debbie Oakes who lived at Meadow Cottage in Dodleston, the site of Lukas’ original, 16th Century farmhouse. Ken had borrowed a BBC Micro Model B computer from the local school, and messages began to appear on the monitor from Lukas; then, later, from his clergyman friend and that sheriff. Fortunately, their friend, Peter Trinder - an English scholar - was able to translate the messages for them. But who - or what - was this 2109? An AI-enhanced humanoid from the future, or something paranormal or, indeed, extra-terrestrial? And why did 2109 want Ken and Lukas to write up their experiences of these "Communications through Time"? Ken published his account "The Vertical Plane". But Lukas was too scared to make his book public and hid it, hoping it would be found in "safer times". What was going on? Determined to get to the bottom of it, Louis Sinclair - with the help of expert linguists, scientists and paranormal researchers - has uncovered clues, hidden deep in the messages, that throw light upon this dark and puzzling story and, through cracking a cipher, hidden in plain sight, Louis reveals the true meaning of "The Dodleston Mysteries" a cipher referring to Biblical numerology, along with Mayan and Native American prophesies.

Episode 1: The Past?

We find out more about the medieval characters, Lukas Wainman; his very worried clergyman friend; and the vindictive, deceitful sheriff. Ken and his friends realised that there was something wrong with Lukas’ messages. They contained very obvious factual errors. Was Lukas testing them, seeing if they spotted the mistakes? But why? As if these messages weren’t weird enough, Meadow Cottage had started to be plagued by sudden drops in temperature, inexplicable gusts of wind, and items being moved. So, Peter - after reading Colin Wilson’s, ‘Poltergeist!’ - suggested that they contact the highly respected ‘Society for Psychical Research’ and ask them to investigate. As they were waiting for the SPR researchers to arrive, Lukas appeared to Ken’s girlfriend, Debbie Oakes, so, not only communications through time, but - seemingly - time-travel, as well!

Episode 2: The Future?

We meet 2109, a Collective, possibly from the future, who appeared to be running a dangerous and unstable experiment with time. What were its powers? Was it the conductor, as it were, of an orchestrated deception for its own enigmatic purposes? The Collective demanded that Ken and his friends were not to try and find out Lukas Wainman’s real name. But they already had! 2109 was furious with them. It said that, by doing so, they’d risked disrupting the experiment, unleashing “forces” that could potentially destabilise reality, warning them that, with their meddling, they could even breach the "grandfather paradox" of time with catastrophic results. Curiously, as the communications continued, Ken and Debbie started writing to Lukas in Middle English. How was that? Were they being mind-controlled, possibly by 2109? And why did Lukas worry about governments getting hold of computers? Had 2109 mentioned Artificial Intelligence, eugenics, and mass surveillance to him? Something very relevant to us, today!

Episode 3: The Time Experiment?

We learn more about the 2109’s experiment. 2109 explained how it could control time using tachyonic technology. It also said that passengers of UFOs can teleport and take over the bodies of humans. Indeed, it thought that one of the investigators from the Society for Psychical Research might be one of these, trying to disrupt its experiment. And not just that investigator, but possibly another entity known as ONE who was a time-traveller and, seemingly, was 2109’s arch enemy.

Episode 4: The Messages?

We start our “detective work”, figuring out what’s really going on. We note that, despite the BBC Micro’s modern keyboard lacking letters used in the Middle Ages - like “thorn” and “yogh” - the medieval folk managed the keyboard just fine. Impossible! And, it appears that the language of the medieval messages was a mix of rubbish and sophistication. Strange! An uneducated hoaxer, perhaps, or was it deliberate? And, if so, why? The answer is as revealing as it is surprising!

Episode 5: The Hoaxers?

Is this just a hoax, brilliantly concocted by Ken, Debbie and Peter? Or are they being hoaxed by an intruder, a hacker, possibly, years before the Internet was available to the general public? Or are the 1980’s folk being hoaxed by paranormal phenomena, having malicious fun at their expense? To answer these questions, we look closely at Ken, Debbie and Peter; the possible participation of their neighbours; the “all-powerful” Collective, 2109; and the authenticity of the medieval characters, particularly, Lukas who seems to have been dabbling, illegally, in the occult. Something definitely happened in Dodleston, but what was really going on, there?

Episode 6: The Meaning

We answer the question, “What was really going on in Dodleston?” And to answer that, we become, not just detectives, but cryptographers, code-crackers, as well. You see, Ken knew that “2109” wasn’t the entity’s name or the time in which it was “alive”, and wondered if the number, “2109” was actually a cipher, a secret code. It is! And, through cracking it, we find out why the Collective, 2109, had set up its time-experiment and discover its disturbing and profound relevance to us, today.

The Mystery of the Dodleston Messages: A unique supernatural detective story.

For a period of two years in the 1980s, Ken Webster found himself in the extraordinary position of corresponding directly with an individual who said they had lived on the site of his own cottage four centuries earlier. The correspondence began with messages left on his home computer on the kitchen table, and ended with communications scrawled directly onto paper. Fully prepared for some form of elaborate hoax, Webster found to his consternation that the language of the messages tallied precisely with 16th century English usage.

The Vertical Plane is a riveting personal experience of an inexplicable fault in the fabric of time - and a moving account of a the.relationships mediated across four hundred years.

This is the Second Edition with additional material and further thoughts by the author, after thirty-six years. All involved in the experience are still, to this day, trying to make sense of what happened back in 1984.

I was wondering if you've heard of this (it was on an episode of the podcast dark history) THE DODLESTON MESSAGES: GHOST IN THE MACHINE, the man who experienced it wrote a book called The Vertical Plane (K. Webster) Though it's a bit hard to get your hands on I've tried looking for more information but theres not all that much out there! It's very interesting but theres not a lot of information on the case!

The Dodleston Messages are super cool (even though I don’t personally buy into any of it).For those of you who haven’t heard about this:

Ken Webster, an economics teacher at Dodleston (England), started getting strange messages (in the form of saved documents on his personal computer) in 1984. The messages were from someone named Lukas who claimed that they were from the 16th century. Lukas claimed he was a previous resident of the home Webster was living in at the time this took place. Lukas spoke (or “typed” in Old English) to Webster through computer messages. This went on for a couple of years and apparently Lukas was joined by another person from the year 2019. The time traveling messages stopped in 1986. Webster wrote “The Vertical Plane”

I’m not really an expert on capabilities of computers back in the early 80′s but this was supposedly something that was difficult to fake back then. He also apparently got messages while he was away from his computer and he had witnesses to this.

I did listen to this podcast on Dark History and its def worth a listen. Its fun and a cool story.  Thanks for bringing this up!

What a cool story! From the paranormal world, “1980s computer 'ghost' accuses couple of stealing his home then leaves for 2109″

This is what happened...

Back in 1985,  Ken Webster was given a BBC microcomputer. Soon after, he and his girlfriend Debbie received a series of communications, known as the Dodleston messages.

According to a blog written by Allison Troutner on howstuffworks.com, it all started with a mysterious set of footprints after Ken and Debbie moved into a dilapidated 18th-century cottage in Cheshire.

During renovations, the couple noticed strange, six-toed footprints in the dust, which seemed to walk up the walls between the bathroom and kitchen.

The pair initially dismissed what they had seen as nothing more than a prank, and painted over the footprints - but they were back a day later.. Over the next few weeks, the couple experienced a series of incidents that made them feel as though they were not quite alone. Tins of cat food had been neatly stacked in a pyramid and an eerie presence was felt in the cottage.

Ken was a teacher at a local school, so he brought home a BBC microcomputer. Soon after it was set up, a message appeared, that seemed like an ominous poem.

More messages soon followed, with the writer asking Ken and Debbie who they are before accusing them of stealing his house.

Days later, a second equally strange message came through, appearing to be written in some archaic version of English.

It said: "I write on behalf of many – What strange words you speak – You are a worthy (good) man who has a fanciful woman, and you live in my house (who dwell in my home) – with lights which (the) devil makes – It was a great crime to have stolen (bribed) my house. – L.W."

Over the next year and a half, more messages continued to appear. So, Ken asked questions back to try and find out the identity of the writer.

The mysterious writer initially gave the name as Lukas, but confessed his name was Thomas Harden or Hawarden. Thomas said he had been in communication with 'a friend from 2109'.

The message read: "Try to understand that you three have a purpose that shall in your lifetime change the face of history, we, 2109, must not affect your thoughts directly but give you some sort of guidance that will allow room for your own destiny. All we can say is that we are all part of the same god, whatever, he is (?), is."

The Dodleston Messages, Part 3

In this super-sized series finale to the narrative portion of the story, we return to the mystery at Meadow Cottage one last time. When we last left off, high school economics teacher Ken Webster was nearly a year into renovating the 18th Century home he had purchased in the early 1980s. After experiencing strange poltergeist-like activity such as footprints on walls and dark shadow figures lurking in the night, Ken and his girlfriend Debbie would begin to experience something even stranger: typed messages left on his computer, seemingly from a man living in the 1500s. As time wore on and the messages became harder and harder to follow, the man behind the messages would begin appearing to Debbie in her dreams. Then, even more people would begin communicating through the computer screen, namely, two time travelers calling themselves "2109" and "The One". 2109 would eventually tell Ken and Debbie that they were part of a scientific experiment.
