October scary movie review roundup:
I decided to really put forth an effort to celebrate this being Halloween month by watching as many horror films as I can. requirements aren't too strict but i'm only counting movies that are new to me, not old favorites. youtube has a ton of movies for free so i've been sifting through those and found some decent ones. if anyone has any good recommendations please lmk!
(i'm not like a huge slasher/gore fan but i don't mind it if it isn't in excess in a film, which crosses out a ton lol. i'm unfortunately squeamish about that stuff but i've always prefered thrillers/psychological horror and stuff of that ilk anyway. )
list of films watched so far:
-The Terror (Netflix)
(actually started this last month, nearly done with it so i won't rate it yet. acting is great, but the CGI of the monster is kind of bad imo)
-Grave Encounters (Free on YT)
i love a good found footage film. this one was a pleasant surprise but too predictable. acting was good, ending was unsatisfying. 5/10
-The Haunting (Free on YT)
didn't know this was an adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House until it started, hated the changes they made. but it did solve a long childhood mystery of mine: once as a kid my fam and i went furniture shopping and this movie was playing on a huge tv. i paid attention to it only for a minute and saw the scene where Nell sees her reflection's pregnancy belly growing (for context Nell herself wasn't pregnant) and screams in terror and runs away and then i walked away. never knew it was from this movie but always wondered. mystery solved!) CGI wasn't terrible most of the time but when it was bad, it was bad. i hate what they did to the characters, hate the changes from the source material (wtf was that bedroom SA scene??? ...was the ceiling going to impregnate her???) all the iconic moments from the book that were added to the movie felt like flimsy afterthoughts. marcia gay harden, i can believe as Nell. Catherine Zeta Jones, I can believe as Theodora. Liam Neeson as the doctor, sure. Why the fuck is Owen Wilson in this. (3/10. watched on youtube.)
-Hell House LLC (Youtube)
another pleasant found footage surprise. i really enjoyed this one and will most likely watch again. good/decent acting and the suspense did get to me, particularly in the scenes with the basement/rising tension in the cast/clown statue. The found footage thing is most genuine here, where in the following sequels it feels hamfisted and not as genuine bc everyone and their mom is doing a fucking documentary or news bit on the hotel. also a bit predictable but they nailed the suspense and the buildup to the climax was pretty well done. CGI not good but briefly used at the end, didn't bother me like it did in the sequels. 8.5/10
-Hell House LLC-The Abbadon Hotel /Hell House LLC-Lake of Fire (Also free on YT)
notably worse than the original. acting was especially bad in The Abbadon Hotel. Both films suffer from "we-don't-trust-our-viewers" syndrome where they insert so many freaking flashbacks to the original that it feels insulting they don't expect the audience to remember what happened before. flashbacks could make up a good third of both movies. hated most of the cast for The Abbadon Hotel but Lake of Fire was much better. The actor for Tully was awful in all three movies. CGI was terrible but sparsely used, at least. Both movies relied on the creepy clown gimmick way too much which felt like a huge waste considering the setting is a demonic/haunted hotel full of other potential props/settings that could've been used more for a good scare. the ending to the trilogy as a whole was fine. Abbadon gets a 2.5/10 and Lake of Fire gets 5.5. I would def watch Lake of Fire again but Abbadon was a slog.
-In the Tall Grass (Netflix)
this has been on my netflix queue for YEARS and i literally only just watched it last night. based off a Stephen King work and I love SK so I had high hopes and wasn't let down. I haven't read the novella but this was a good movie on its own. normally i don't like time-loops as a plot device but it worked really well here and the acting was good. patrick wilson is a sleeper fave of mine, he was great in this and i've never seen him in such a charismatic to super super creepy role before so he nailed it although when that scene hit i was literally cringing away from my laptop. the child actor in this is also really good, i felt for him at the end. would definitely watch this again and i'm interested in the book now. really good suspense/acting/soundtrack. i like that they never fully explained the phenomenon behind the giant black rock/ time fuckery in the tall grass or the mysterious alien grass people. IMO horror works best sometimes when it is left to the audience's imagination or when there's gaps left empty in the lore. 8/10.
-Barbarian (Hulu)
i've been really interested in this for years but never got around to watching it bc i don't like sitting in movie theaters and i'm slow to gettting to new media. but i knew zach cregger from his days in the WKUK and loved that and had heard good things about this. (also apparently he's developing a new Resident Evil movie or something now?? I'm excited.) these days i don't/rarely watch full movie trailers because they give so much away so i tend to want to go in fresh. i've avoided full spoilers for this movie up till now aside from some vague mentions of stuff so i knew there was a certain theme in the movie. overall it was solid, really tense first half with that red herring and really good acting from the female lead, i don't recall her name. when act two came on i was genuinely shocked and thought the website had glitched out or something, wasn't expecting that.
Last Podcast on the Left just did a series on Josef Fritzl (huge trigger warning if you decide to look him up) and that case must have heavily inspired the movie because there were a lot of parallels I couldn't help but notice. Overall fairly disturbing but I do wish the ending was a little different. I like the significance of what happens but idk, felt like it needed a little something more. Even one line of dialogue could have bolstered that, because I know Tess was thinking it but I needed to hear her say it to REDACTED.
(and what happened to REDACTED'S body? he's never shown again. did the REDACTED eat it? was he buried? did i miss something?)
-The Fourth Kind (free on YT)
awful. awful. awful. maybe one truly scary moment. the ending was bullshit. acting was whatever. too much screeching audio and my ears can't handle that. this movie is always being hyped online as so intense and scary yet i couldn't stop rolling my eyes. huge disappointment. 2/10 and that's me being generous.
--The Omen (1976) (Hulu)
admittedly i watched this when i was a kid but i barely remember it so it counts. sound mixing was fucking awful, for starters. dialogue is a whisper yet the soundtrack (heavy on ominous chanting in latin and screaming and spooky music) is SO damn loud i kept having to raise and lower the volume. a good flick for its time, i guess, but I couldn't get into it. If there's a more modern version I might check it out. Gregory Peck is always a treat but man, I got so mad when he's safe in Rome and he calls his wife, who's in mortal peril with a half body cast and alone in a hospital, to meet with his contact and fly to him in Rome. You couldn't go get her yourself?? You just condemned her, idiot, and you knew she was gonna die. For fuck's sake. Then he has the nerve to get all droopy and sad when he gets the call like five minutes later that she's fucking dead. Not scary. Suspense is killed by goofy spooky music. Gregory Peck's silver-fox hotness is offset by his character's stupid reticence to believe the facts before him until it’s too late. 3/10.
-The Inkeepers (Peacock)
i didn't hate it but i also didn't love it. i love anything about a haunted house or a haunted hotel, and this one being a haunted hotel sounded intriguing but ultimately it felt like it fumbled itself over and over. kind of boring, tbh? really unsatisfying ended even if it was a bit gutsy to kill the main character. sorry for spoilers here but i don't think anyone's gonna race to watch this one lol. i'd never heard of this movie until it got recommended to me. didn't realize lena dunham was an exec producer on this until the credits rolled. 3/10
#leigh speaks#we got rid of hulu this month so i'm trying to watch as many horror movies as i can on there before the cancellation goes through#peacock has been adding a decent collection to scary movies as well!#i feel like i've missed one or two but i can't recall atm#ALSO i know all the free movies on YT are only free bc they have ads in them but if you haven't already#install adblocker or Ublock origin>open YT>profit#this will NOT work on chrome though!!!

My Peak TV Journey Girls5Eva
I meant to take notes for this, but didn’t as I watched it too quickly while preparing to move. I thought that the third season was great. If I have any complaints it’s that it was too short, and I wish they found more time to fit songs into it.
In the pre-release to the season, critics buzzed about how switching from Peacock to Netflix would boost the show’s profile and make people forget it ever started and was canceled anywhere else. It didn’t. As someone who really likes the show and wants more of it, that was disappointing. Contemporary musical comedy made for television may be a really small sub-genre for a reason. But I also developed a dark theory, which is that this cycle of revisiting pop musicians from approximately twenty years ago and condemning the way they were treated by the media really isn’t interested in dealing with the aftermath in contemporary life and that makes this show finding an audience harder. And while I do generally think that, I am unwilling to fight for it. It’s accusatory and un-provable. Also, it’s just based on my thought experiments. Based on more anecdotal experience, it might be that in the first episodes, the set up feels more sad than funny. This is similar to The Other Two, a show of I’d consider its cousin. Both can trace their roots to Saturday Night Live, both are show-biz satires about the not great effect of long term commercial failure on its main characters and an industry morphing at a rapid speed. I am a fan of both, but have to admit I can see why they’d be off putting for many viewers, especially in their early episodes.
Instead of speculating on why it didn't hit that big, I am going to praise what I liked about the series, showing my appreciation as long as I can. The season’s arc was about a failed attempt to do a small tour after the release but lack of promotional support of the album that they spent most of season two making. That season ended with a song they wrote about Fort Worth, Texas simply because it’s the largest American city that didn’t have a song about it. So their “tour” starts with an extended residency in Fort Worth, where they are adored, but not reaching their full potential. This is underlined symbolically by them staying at the Marriott Hotel’s Divorced Dad Suits. (They stay for free courtesy Gloria’s credit card points.) I love everything about the Divorced Dad Suites’ especially the vending machine of already wrapped birthday gifts. (Summer advising one of the divorced dads on what to purchase from it makes me smile to think of months later.)
When they finally leave Fort Worth they arrange a tour of small clubs, excited to meet with more of their under-served and dispersed fan base. Wiki also books them to play Radio City Music Hall on Thanksgiving Day, giving them the goal of trying to sell tickets there before the date. Only it turns out that the clubs they are touring are all owned by an ultra right wing family (represented by John Ealy as some one eager to force himself into meetings between pregnant people and their doctors, while otherwise being a miserable closet case) who demands approval of the content of their shows. When they defy this by performing their original song “BPE (Big Pussy Energy)” a “Footloose” is declared on them banning them from all their potential future gigs. The declaration of a “Footloose” also has me laughing months later. Awful as he was, I wanted more of John Ealy and his character.
Between being forced to cancel most of their tour and the season climax at Radio City, they visit Wiki’s parents in Maryland, take part in a private birthday for a rich wife, and befriend the biggest male pop singer of their time.
Summer gets involved with a multi-level marketing business to try and make more money while the band's tour is cancelled. while trying to develop a sense of self away from men and religion. She’s adorable. She also is deeply unsure of her taste and gets some validation in loving something literally everyone else thinks is a bad idea. Busy Philips has never been better.
Wiki’s parents turn who are affluent. All the talk about her “Hard Scrabble” up bringing was puns and misdirection. Her dad is buying a boat to retire on and enjoys crabbing. She has very successful sibling in medicine. She wondered if some of her failures in show business are because she’s too coddled at home. But we learn more about her DOA solo career, some of which demands scenes between her and Summer, a plot important rarity. It deepened the dynamics in the group in some interesting ways. Renee Elise Goldsberry is as always a treasure and its exciting to see her reach for new successes after previous failures to launch.
Dawn kind of feels like an afterthought in this season. This is probably because she’s not trying to write for most of the season. Instead her arc, such as it is, is about being pregnant while touring and finding herself in situations where she awkwardly struggles with how to talk about the conversation that sometimes fuel her songwriting. It’s kind of awkward and doesn’t really have a payoff, unless you count the song written near the end of the season. I do like a lot off this plot in theory. I like the acknowledgment that it’s sometimes harder to address things directly than through art. And that as much of the pernicious things we want to attribute to art are already well ingrained into the society that produced them. I just want more Sara Bareilles.
Finally it’s time to talk about Gloria. Her story involves being obsessed with true crime podcasts, a direct to streaming reality series called Critter Mouth about a veterinary dentist for wild animals, becoming friends with the worlds biggest male pop star of the moment while not recognizing him because of her indifference to men, and a quest to determine what I kind of woman she is most suited to by sleeping with all 179 types in existence. (She has a spreadsheet). Amazingly, all these plots come together in hilarious climaxes. Breaking women into different types in general is not funny, but the fact that the number of types is 179, and this is apparently well known is funny. Also it led to a very good Reel Paula Pell and her wife made.
The season had some good jokes about Netflix through it’s in universe version of the series and recognizable versions of Netflix hits. It makes me sad to think of Girls5Eva not thriving among them.

This Week in BL - I’m Confused A Lot
April 2022 Wk 2
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.
Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying the most.

Ongoing Series - Thai
Cutie Pie (YouTube Sat) Ep 8 - It’s goddamn great. Go away, don’t look at me, it’s embarrassing. I’m still not over this ep. I am not gonna survive ep 11, okay? We all see it coming and it’s gonna hurt like crazy.
La Cuisine (GaGa Sat) Ep 5 - I like that they moved to an after-hours clubbing setting to increase tension, and it worked. Chup is SUCH a good boy, he can’t even activate the “baby is a floppy drunk” trope properly. It is a bit slow, but I think that’s because it’s going by its own pace and if held up to SOCY or Cutie Pie its pace suffers by comparison. So I’m resisting the temptation to compare.
Love Stage!! (AISplay or grey Sat) Ep 9-11 - one of the things I appreciate about this show’s climax is that it’s about coming out as a celebrity couple as well as gay. I liked the examination of the nature of celebrity and privacy (juxtaposed against being closeted). And I love that they show us two couples with two different approaches to this choice. P’Jet is such a a great advice giver for Anda and I love the gay advice dad rep. It ended well, different from previous adaptations and very Thai about it. A solid and enjoyable show, solid 8/10. RECOMMENDED Full review here.
Dear Doctor, I'm Coming for Soul (iQIYI Weds) Ep 3 - it’s good. The leads are very engaging, it’s fun to watch them slowly become friends, and the pacing is decent, lots of fun external plot stressors.
KinnPorsche (iQIYI Sat) Ep 2 - is “melodramatic fluff” a genre? Because this is it. Tankun is my spoiled child and Vegas is interesting, but mostly I’m not fussed.
Cupid's Last Wish (YouTube Sun) Ep 2 - honestly I do like this show, but obviously not a ton, because it airs on Sunday but I never get to it until mid week. This ep was disappointing, EarthMix are great together but the story.... the story... meh
Star and Sky: Star in My Mind (Fri YouTube) Ep 1 - the main lead reminds me a bit of Frank (of FrankDrake) in acting style and delivery. At first I found him off putting, but by the end of the ep I’d warmed to him. This is (sort of) a lost love reunion arc (GMMTV bringing back the blue shorts, hello old friends) + freshy hotness contest = 2 Moons vibes. It was fun to see some Wabi Sabi stable playing around at GMMTV but mostly this first ep left me confused. Yes, I agree it’s a daydream, but still, odd, and unnecessary since we all get that D is still into K (his acting is good enough to convey that without having to resort to a dream sequence). I think I’m confused by the directing on this show. WAIT A SEC. Is this New phoning it in? (Runs to check.) Why YES yes it is.
The Tuxedo (GaGa Sat) Ep 6 - it’d be great if it were JUST soft from the start, because when it’s soft it’s LOVELY. But the softness is rare. It’s like eating a meal of just spices. I’m like: the spice profile is good, but it’s not ON anything. It’s all just WRONG.
What Zabb Man! (YT Sat) Ep 1 - actually it’s good, it should be higher up on this list but NO SUBS. Star Hunter dropped it to their YT channel and honestly I think it might be a mistake that it’s available international. I hope we get a subbed version, it seems to have a much cleaner story than usual for this studio.
Miracle of the Teddy Bear (grey Sun) Ep 4 - apparently it’s going to get YT distribution so I’m happy to wait for that. It will drop a month or so after Netflix air date (and blocked in the 25 countries where the drama is legally available). However, no one knows if it will have subs.
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Cherry Blossoms After Winter (Korea Viki Fri) Ep 7 - full of the expected pain but not as much as I thought, a relief. I think we’re going to continue to get gentle drama and a sweet ending. I loved that we saw TaeSung’s childhood scars as well as HaeBom’s and I can’t wait for next week. I’ve grown to really love this couple. Look, I can’t help it, I’m old school and so is this show.
Gossip
Trailer for the new KimCop Thai BL from Star Hunter dropped (no subs). That’s My Candy นายแคนดี้ของฉัน
Korean production house NEW (Semantic Error, Blueming) confirmed it has optioned Follow The Wind 따라바람 : two boys who met each other because of “an incident" as children are reunited as adults, and one of them has to repress his long held feelings for the other.

In Case You Missed it
Thai BL staring JimmyTommy (Why R U?, Peach of Time) Middleman’s Love AKA Middle Love has been picked up by Viki! Coffee Melody also got picked up by Viki.
New Thai BL time loop medical drama Triage starts April 18 (trailer here) on AISplay (no idea on international). I didn’t know about it until a few days ago. Tumblr, you failed me. Stars Tae (Paint With Love, 2 Moons) & Tee (2 Moons), Fiat (SOTUS S & My Gear & Your Gown - has he left GMMTV?) with guest appearance from King Tul as Dr Bun (from Manner of Death) - that’s how I learned out it. It looks good. Very much up my alley - I like medical dramas, I like time slip, I like boys kissing... TA DA!
The Cherry Magic movie released in Japan, no idea how to get it internationally.
Vietnam has a new BL going that I didn’t know about, Bản Tình Ca Cho Em (A Love Song For My Beloved) on YouTube (but blocked for the USA).
Japanese BL Fukou-kun wa Kiss Suru Shikanai! AKA Mr Unlucky Has No Choice But To Kiss AKA Mr Unlucky Only Can Kiss premieres on April 22nd on GaGa (trailer) AND Viki. Mr Chronically-Unlucky & Mr Always-Lucky accentually end up dating after they meet at uni orientation. I think this is going to be in the My Love Mix-Up vein (as opposed to My Beautiful Man) but I couldn’t be more excited for it!
Korean BL, Ocean Likes Me got a trailer and has been picked up by Viki, starts April 26 with an 8 ep arc, 2 per week. This is a big one for us and Korea, their first BL with an out gay actor in the leading role (Holland). Also stars Han Gi Chan (Where Your Eyes Linger). SUPPORT IT!!! Plot: a young entrepreneur who starts a udon restaurant near a beach finds serving customers difficult. He meets Tommy (Holland), a failed musician who returns to his hometown in search of a new dream.
Next Week Looks Like This:
The next yaoi adaptation (so excited for these!) from Thailand, Meow Ears Up น้องเหมียว ในห้องผม, featuring 2 BLs plots AND a GL (and terrible wigs) starts April 12 on ASIplay (not sure on international distribution). Taiwanese BL Plus and Minus premieres on April 15 on Viki or GaGaOOLaLa, thank fuck.
This week’s best moments?

SUIT!!!

Most ADORBS morning after

These two. *heart eyes*

Simone Ashley interviewed by New York Amsterdam News

Simone Ashley in ‘Bridgerton’ Season 2—an actress to keep an eye on
by MARGRIA
April 14, 2022
There is no getting around how impacting “Bridgerton” Season 2 has been on the Black and Brown communities around the world. In America, where things are white and barely Black the arrival of two Indian characters, in key roles, in the second season, has set the social media world aflame, and rightly so.
And although the series is based on the book series written by Julia Quinn of which there are eight novels, one for each of the Bridgerton siblings, it was the visionary Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,”
“How to Get Away With Murder”) and her team that brought these characters to the small screen, making sure to cast gifted, multiracial actors. It’s a joy to watch. This attention to detail we can call the Rhimes touch because there are very few showrunners that have a better hit record than Rhimes, who has ruled television for most of the past two decades.
Now, to the facts. “Bridgerton” Season 2 is more than just a success story, it’s taken hold of the imagination of millions and has zoomed to the No. 1 spot in 76 countries, with a viewership of 82 million+ homes, and is moving, like a bullet, to becoming the second-most watched series by total watch time on the platform. This is just another example of Rhimes’ ability to create another cultural phenomenon while keeping her fingers firmly on the cultural zeitgeist and making sure that multiculturalism is never lost.
Although it’s not yet clear if the Netflix series will follow the same format as the books (or run eight seasons), Season 1 was mostly adapted from the first book in the series, “The Duke & I,” and the second, “The Viscount Who Loved Me.”
The love story in Season 2 focuses on Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley, Kate Sheffield in the book), who are both equally passionate and unmovingly stubborn in the show.
The sexual chemistry is clear for all to see, except the feuding lovers.
The second season finds Lord Bridgerton now determined to marry out of obligation, not love since he’s never recovered from witnessing the sudden death of his father (from a bee sting) at the age of 38.
The young Lord is taken for a spin when Edwina (Charithra Chandran)—the diamond of the season—will only marry the man approved by her older, deeply loved half-sister Kate. When Anthony begins to court Edwina, Kate’s defenses spring alive believing him to be a “rake, with a capital R” as a gossip columnist, Lady Whistledown, describes him in her popular scandal sheet. But it’s the undeniable chemistry between Anthony and Kate that makes this season so special.
Ashley has been a working actress for years, cutting her teeth in many well-known British dramas including “Doctors,” “Casualty,” “Broadchurch,” and “Guilt.” Then her career took a great jolt forwards when she landed a role in the Netflix smash hit, “Sex Education,” playing the hip, cool girl Olivia Hanan, a girl terrified to show her boyfriend her face during her sexual climax.
We caught up with Simone Ashley (Kate Sharma) to chat about her role in “Bridgerton” who is on record stating that representation “matters” (and, it does), and to discuss her character.
Amsterdam News: Congratulations on the success. They only gave me eight minutes which means three questions. Is there a question that you wished reporters had asked you, that they did not? She’s a complicated character.
Simon Ashley: Thank you. Well, I would like to speak more about my character [Kate Sharma] and there has been such a wonderfully warm response to having the Indian representation on this show. This character is inspired by author Julia Quinn, and she is such a nuanced, complex character and one that I enjoyed playing.
AmNews: You are an extremely gifted thespian and your body language is pure perfection. How did you work with the director?
SA: Thank you. I didn’t want to portray the character as a villain, someone who betrays her sister. This is about family, her love for her family. I wanted to portray a woman that’s authentic to her heart, and protecting Edwina, and her family. That’s the value that I wanted other women to see. I wanted to show that strength.
AmNews: Love is her motivation. It comes through very strongly.
SA: Kate is someone who wants to blend into the background. When we first meet her, her hair is in a bun, the make-up is minimal. She wears very dark colors. She isn’t very effervescent because she wants to put her sister first and in the spotlight. Kate, she’s the silent, kind of assigned type, in the background. She’s very observant.
AmNews: That’s an interesting way to describe her but accurate from what I viewed.
SA: She’s a people watcher, she loves to observe and I think she’s very reserved, and I think she’s not very open to being vulnerable with people. She likes to keep to herself.
AmNews: As I said, at the top of this conversation, she’s a very complicated character.
SA: I think that her journey is that she wants to run away from her problems. Her loss of her father, especially after she’s married off her sister. Then we slowly see her loosen up and become more colorful, with what she wears, and how she’s letting her hair fall. And she’s opening up to the idea of falling in love.
AmNews: Well said, and we do watch Kate fall in love—and the struggle of letting go is so wonderfully, delicious.
SA: I think, for me, it was important to tell that part of the story. She was in a rock and a hard place but she genuinely was falling in love with this person, Anthony, who is kind of her soulmate. And that journey of loving herself and setting herself free from those duties and responsibilities.
AmNews: Sounds like a fun challenge, am I correct?
SA: It was a fun challenge to play a character like that. Someone so subtle, with minimum speech in certain areas, and I enjoyed playing Kate, through her eyes, and her observations of this world that she’s in.
AmNews: Again, it goes back to my comment about your beautiful body language.
SA: Thank you. I am drawn to people like that anyway—mysterious—still waters run deep and that applies to Kate.
AmNews: Understatement, what I also loved, speaking about subtleties, is how Kate connected with the animals which included her dog, the horse, and a bee. A horse is a wild beast, you must pay attention.
SA: I resonated with Kate on this because she’s not like her sister, Edwina, a super academic, who practiced all the dances, Kate has an intuitive heart. She may not be as articulate as Edwina but she is very intuitive with animals which I applied with the bee sting scene, in episode 3, and when I was speaking with the director we discussed how she’s the only one that can calm Anthony down like she’s able to tame a wild horse. There is something about her in that ability to calm him because there is something animalistic about Anthony and Kate can handle that, she’s the only woman to put her foot on the ground [so, to speak] and hold the reins.
AmNews: Anthony is like that fairytale character, the one with the lion who is ailing because there is a splinter in his paw. He’s growling because he’s in pain.
SA: Yes. I love that analogy. Exactly. She’s very brave for both of them.
AmNews: Let’s talk about the look—the no beauty look created by makeup artist Pat McGrath.
SA: All hail to [makeup artist] Pat McGrath, she’s one of the loveliest people that I’ve ever met. Her beauty products are just incredible and we used her products on the show. I was more than happy, I was incredibly honored to wear the products. And when I walked on the set, I felt so beautiful, and confident, like a princess, and that my skin was being shown off in the best way possible and that’s something rare.
AmNews: You said a mouthful. To get our colors correct, on-screen—it’s close to being a miracle.
SA: It’s beautiful how it brings dark skin to life with the lighting, and the makeup—everything.
AmNews: You did not look like a zombie.
SA: Exactly, no gray tones on this set.
AmNews: Not with Ms. Pat McGrath.

Enterprise is also Leaving Netflix. What Should you Watch Before it Boldly Goes Away
So let’s talk about Enterprise shall we? The black sheep of Trek, it is very different from what came before it. And you are right, Enterprise starts off slow. R e a l l y s l o w. Do not let that stop you, Enterprise has a lot to offer! How you can watch depends on how much you have to put into the show:
Option 1 - Long Option

Enterprise is primarily comprised of story arcs in its third and fourth seasons. You can see Star Trek actively starting to transition its’ form of storytelling from usually one- or two-episode stories to the multi-episode to season-long story arcs we typically see in TV today. I will also not be the first to say that Enterprise really blossoms in those two seasons. Because of this, it is really hard to just jump into an episode in the middle of a story arc without being a little lost
Your best option is to watch all of the Xindi story arc and most of the story arcs in season 4.
Start at season 2 episode 26 The Expanse and watch all the way to season 4 episode 21 Terra Prime. This is the true series finally, do not watch These are the Voyages, it is one of the most insulting series finales, like worse than Seinfeld.
Please note that you can skip season 4 episodes 18 and 19 if you don’t like/ are annoyed by the Mirror Universe. These are for-fun episodes that I enjoyed, but I understand are not for everyone. Additionally, season 4 episodes 10 and 11 are not part of any broader story arc, but I would only skip episode 11, Observer Effect. I personally really like episode 10, Daedalus, which gives insight into the history of the Star Trek Universe.
This leaves you with anywhere from 42-46 episodes to watch. Now if that seems like a lot, don’t worry! You can always watch:
Option 2 - Just 10 Episodes
Season 1 Episode 13 - Dear Doctor

Ship's Doctor and resident non-human character Phlox is on Enterprise in a type of exchange program, with a human taking his place on a Denobulan vessel as they strive to learn more about each other's cultures. Phlox writes his human counterpart a 'Data's Day' style letter in which he recounts the adventure of the day. So what's on the menu today? Oh, I don't know, just the origination point of the Prime Directive, you might have heard of that before.
Season 2 Episode 23 - Regeneration

Regeneration is a follow-up to the movie, Star Trek First Contact. Yes. I am serious. A group of scientists encounters a crash site where they find Borg corpsickles and so kindly bring them back. This means that the Borg's attack at Wolf 359 was actually a predestination paradox created by the same man who leads the charge against the Borg at that very battle. Yikes. Overall though, a Borg episode was surprisingly appreciated, reminding us that this is overall still a part of the current Star Trek canon.
Season 2 Episode 24 - First Flight

The point of Enterprise was to give us a glimpse into the early years of human space exploration. While we only saw so much, we did see the beginning of humans traveling at faster than warp speeds. As part of the NX program that spawned Enterprise herself, many tests had to be made to push the maximum possible speed. Of course, being the prolific piolet he was, Archer was there. Making drama.
Season 3 Episode 8 - Twilight

Enterprise ran into an anomaly that slams into a corridor where Archer and T'Pol are. T'Pol becomes trapped and Archer frees her. This allowed her to escape, but he did not share her fate, being rendered unconscious by the same anomaly. That was 12 years ago. As a result of his injury, he can no long-term memories and Archer has to come to grips with what has been lost during that time. This is my favorite episode of Enterprise, that invokes shades of DS9's The Visitor and Voyager's Year of Hell. In my research, I found out that this was originally pitched as a Voyager story which is now so obvious. The relationship between Archer and T'Pol is never romantic, but you can see the true care they have for each other in their interactions here.
The “Romulan Interference” Arc
Season 4 Episode 12 - Babel One
Season 4 Episode 13 - United
Season 4 Episode 14 - The Aenar

I have decided to select this three-episode arc which is defined by Memory Alpha as the Romulan Interference Arc. By trying to turn the founding members of the federation against each other, the Romulans accidentally created one of their biggest rivals. Oops. Of course, the Romulans are not the main focus, where this really shines is the interplay between the different cultures of the founding races, the humans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites. You can see that this was originally planned to be long and drawn out, but they did a good job of condensing it into a nice little arc. Andorians are at their best in Enterprise and this is the most in-depth look that we see in the series. Star Trek Legend Jeffery Combs plays Shran and of course he is amazing, his chemistry with Archer is real. As a reoccurring character, this is not the first or last time we see Shran, but probably the most focused look we have on the character.
The “Xenophobic Humans” Arc
Season 4 Episode 3 - Home
Season 4 Episode 20 - Demons
Season 4 Episode 21 - Terra Prime

Another arc here to round off the list. I had originally only planned on placing episodes 20 and 21 here, but as there is setup done earlier in the season, episode 3, so I have also included it here as it contributes to a bigger part of the story. It makes sense after all that people have been through after the Xindi war, there would be pro-isolation groups. Heck, they probably were already there, but it makes sense that here, the tension would grow. It’s kind of ironic that after all of these struggles with alien races, the climax of the series sees a struggle not among aliens, but among humans. As a premise, this is what we all expected of Enterprise, a Coalition among explorers coming together to see what is beyond their shores. This is the true ending of Enterprise.
Again there are multiple ways to watch Enterprise, and again, these are just snippets. I know I left out some episodes that people will probably enjoy like The Expanse, Carbon Creek, or even the pilot Broken Bow (which in my opinion is the best pilot episode in the pre-reboot Star Trek era). This list was composed of episodes that would best give the Enterprise flavor, and in my opinion, the effect of an episode on Star Trek mythology was one of the biggest contributing factors. Would love to know what you think or if there are other episodes that should be added.

Happy New Year! End of Year Round Up Part Duex.
Though I’d keep the tradition going and wrap up the year by giving little mini reviews of stuff I’ve seen…also between getting sick on Christmas and the holidays themselves I’ve got a lot to catch up on.
Netflix Slumberland. Based on the classic comic Little Nemo, this was a surprisingly sweet story about a little girl using the power of her dreams to say goodbye to her father who was lost at sea. Jason Mamoa had a blast playing Flip, the rouge criminal of Slumberland.
The Sequel that didn’t have to exist but I’m glad it does, Disenchanted. Taking place ten years after the first, Giselle and fam move to the burbs but have a little trouble adjusting. Especially Giselle who starts to long for her old simple life in Andalasia. Enter one MacGuffin of a wishing wand, and Giselle’s wish comes true…except by fairy tale rules, starts turning her into a wicked stepmother! Can Giselle reverse her wish before it’s too late? While not perfect, (Roberts Storyline cough cough) Disenchanted surprised me with how emotional the climax turned (albeit a little rushed)
Netflix Wednesday was a fun series. A little soap opera like but Jenna Ortega carried the show and made you care about the mystery. It’s a little light on the other members of the Addams clan but it’s a coming of age story focused on Wednesday. Plus I love this dress and want to make one like the rest of sewing Tik Tok.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was one of the best things I’ve watched this year. Funny touching and just full of Christmas in every frame. I loved how Peter’s hero Kevin Bacon really came through to save Christmas in the end. Plus I loved the two songs by the Old 97’s.
Finally finished Doctor Who and Thirteen’s era. It was good. Not great. Aside from the Master dancing to Rasputin. And the Doctor regenerating after seeing one last sunset. It was nice. Now I’m just waiting for David Tennant and Donna Nobel again.
Finally Glass Onion on Netflix. While we will never recapture that first time that Rian Johnson got us all in Knives Out, this one comes pretty darn close. It’s more screwball in tone, but the mystery and the resolution is so satisfying.

The Killing of the Sacred Deer
tA doctor is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart after he takes a young teenage boy under his wing.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer was a random watch that I decided to watch on Netflix. It was a film that I have heard about for a little while. I was a fan of The Favorite and The Lobster, so I decided to watch another film by director Yorgos Lanthimos. I believe The Killing of a Sacred Deer will fall under the category of so disturbing I believe watching it once is enough.
Everything in this film made me incredibly uncomfortable and sick. From its disturbing story to its strange acting and its eerie soundtrack, everything about this film will make your skin crawl. The tension that Lathimos built slowly throughout the film made me squirm throughout the entirety of the film. The writing on paper sounds like they are normal conversations, but Lanthimos directing makes it sound completely alien, which adds to this film's sinister nature. I believe he perfectly nails what a modern horror film is. This film essentially comes down to is whether or not this film s your cup of tea. If you like modern horror, then you are most likely going to love this. If not, then you will probably be revolted by it. I believe after pondering this film for a couple of days, I believe I quite liked it.
The acting in this film is well different. Everyone is incredibly stoic and almost robotic at many points in the film, and all of this was done on purpose. This acting brought an otherworldly sensation throughout the film. It was not till the emotional climax is when everyone's emotions really came forth. Colin Farrel and Nicole Kidman are both fantastic in this film. Furthermore, the performances from Raffey Cassidy and Sunny Suljic were great. However, the real show-stealer in this film came from Barry Keoghan. He is fantastic in this film. He perfectly finds a balance between a clingy teenager and a psychopath. He truly shined in this film.
All of the technical aspects of this film, also made me incredibly uncomfortable. The cinematography made me feel claustrophobic. It felt like at many points this film was a tribute to Stanly Kubrick, given the cinematography style. The score is eerie and uncomfortable, which is perfect for this film. The production design also made me feel uncomfortable, even though the majority of the film is set in a beautiful home and clean hallways. The filmmakers truly went out of their way to make you feel as squeamish as possible.
I do have one complaint with this film is that it is a little slow at the beginning of the film and it takes a little while for the story to unfold. Once it starts it's almost unbearable because of the tension. This film essential comes down to is taste. If you are someone who loves modern or arthouse horror films, you are going to love this one. However, the general audience will be left with a sour taste in their mouth after this film.
All in all, I feel like I really liked The Killing of a Sacred Deer, even though it will be a film that I will only watch once. Its story is horrifying and alien that will leave you contemplating for days. However, if you are a casual filmgoer then you are most likely not going to like this film.
I am giving The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a B+.
