“Four years ago, I had the pleasure to meet him and directly delight in his innocent kindness and simplicity. People from Sofia know him as Elder Dobri Dobrev from the village Baylovo. He is a 96 year old elder who could often be seen standing in front of the church St. Alexander Nevsky or St. Methodius and Cyril and their five disciples with his metal cashbox and begging for money. He gives the collected money for renewing of the monasteries and churches or to poor people.
I met him at the Church of St. Kyriaki, when I was attending the Holy Liturgy which was led by several bishops, in the presence of the graceful relics of St. Stephen Milutin the King. Simply, he entered through the church gate, stood in front of the relics and, as a young boy, made a few deep bows [prostrations]. That was an amazing scene, especially because of the feeling of unworthiness when God crosses our life-path with one of His righteous men."

Dobri Dobrev passed away on February 13, 2018 (age 103 years), Kremikovtsi Monastery, Bulgaria
Definitely a living saint who walked among us.
Dobrev was born 20 July 1914 in the village of Bailovo. His father died in World War I and his mother had to raise their children by herself. Dobrev does not remember his youth and school years. He decided to marry around 1940, which is around when Bulgaria joined World War II. In one of the bombings of Sofia a bomb fell near him and he lost almost all his hearing. Dobrev and his wife had four kids, two of which he outlived.
Over the years Dobrev became detached from the material aspects of life and devoted himself entirely to the spirit world. He has donated all his belongings and walks 25 km into the city everyday to beg for money to donate towards the restoration of decaying Bulgarian monasteries and churches and the utility bills of orphanages. He has donated more than €50,000 so far.

Note
Liberation theology is the limpest most milquetoast example of being too concerned about the world and just general “Nice-tianity.” Of course you would find if “cool as hell,” it literally leads to Hell hahaha.
The best form of Christianity is whatever Dobri Dobrev had going on. Being utterly concerned with the next life, total denial of the self
Fellas is it milquetoast to be murdered for opposing American imperialism in Latin America.

Grandpa Dobri (1914-2018), or Dobri Dimitrov Dobrev to give him his proper name. He was a Bulgarian ascetic who walked twelve miles a day near and around the Cathedral of Sofia collecting money for different charities, orphanages monasteries and churches. He had married in 1940 and seen active service in WW2, but he had long outlived his wife and all but two of his children. With his walking and begging he raised the equivalent of 40,000 euros in the local currency the lev, including the biggest sum in 100 years for the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky in Sophia. He died aged 103 at Kremiskovksy Monastery.

Dobri Dobrev
Amos 8: Swallowing the needy
I remember a holy priest from many years ago when I was a student at University in the North of England. His Parish was in a very poor part of the city. He had a warm heart, a generous spirit, a cheerful disposition and showed great concern and pastoral care for his parishioners. He would light the fires of the elderly on winter mornings. He would do shopping…
