the flower of evil fandom (i) should talk more about hyunsoo’s life before meeting jiwon.

this poor abused kid is taking the blame for a crime his sister committed because he loves her that much. he got hit by a car and assumed someone else’s identity just to get by. and the world is calling him a criminal.

he spent years being tortured and assaulted because of what his father did, and now that he’s finally able to live freely, he doesn’t know how. he’s been told all his life that he was an emotionless monster, so he doesn’t even know he’s capable of love. he has been so deeply conditioned to believe he can’t feel anything. and now, everyone treats him the same way. he can’t escape his past, so when people try to see him for who he truly is, he lashes out.

his life gets better once he meets jiwon, but before that? he was called a monster, a demon, all of these hurtful things. he left his sister, the only person he could trust, behind so she could live. it took him almost two decades to get justice. not just the 18 years talked about in the drama. his entire childhood.

just. hyunsoo’s backstory makes me feel things.

Few shows are that good on rewatch as Flower of Evil. It's extremely satisfying to analyse how well the first episodes masterfully manipulate you into believing do hyun soo is shady as fuck and maybe the attachment you developed looking at the family's daily life is a big lie. They're the same confusing feelings ji won experiences oscillating between suspicion and guilt (he's the love of your life you can't suspect him of murder), the prelude to the thesis of the series. What do you trust? Do you believe in the love hyun soo has shown in his actions every day (when he himself doesn't)?
