Russian diasporas have reasons for not protesting the war in greater numbers — Dmitry Dubrovsky, scholar (Holod Media):
Why don’t Russian emigres turn out in bigger numbers for anti-war protests? Dubrovsky insists that the Russia diaspora has a “moral duty” to attend demonstrations against the invasion of Ukraine, but he acknowledges multiple reasons why many Russians stay away: (1) Russians who left home only recently haven’t witnessed a mass protest movement since the 2021 rallies in support of Alexey Navalny, and that experience left most participants disillusioned with the power of public assembly, (2) many expats still have friends and relatives who support the war, influencing the social cost of appearing at an antiwar protest, (3) some Russian-speakers abroad might respond aggressively to what they perceive to be a “betrayal of the homeland,” and perhaps most importantly (4) host countries paradoxically demand antiwar activism from Russian emigres while simultaneously making them feel unwelcome at demonstrations by advocating collective guilty for the entire nationality.
Dubrovsky describes a counterprotest by Ukrainians and Czechs in Prague against Russians who assembled for an antiwar rally where the counter-protesters chanted, “There are no good Russians!” and “We won’t stand together with Russians!” At a demonstration in Warsaw, Polish activist Marta Lempart reportedly asked any Russians in the crowd to identify themselves before she invited them to “f**k off.” The crowd apparently welcomed the suggestion.
Given these pressures, it’s unlikely that antiwar Russian expats will flood the streets of their diaspora communities to protest the war in Ukraine, says Dubrovsky, but he insists that Russians nevertheless “bear a share of responsibility for the Russian regime’s crimes” (though he believes this is different from “collective guilt”). Instead of protesting, he says, expats can more easily donate money to support Ukraine, assist refugees, and work to educate their compatriots both abroad and back in Russia.
