Rec Shop and Too Fresh Presents: Fresh Cuts @ Crown & Harp
I felt like a kid at Christmas when I heard about this event.  Rec Shop and Too Fresh came together to put on10 of DFW's best "Turntablists".  My friend and partner, Diverse Teknics, was of course of one those 10.
My photographer, Pitaru, and I are working on a photo project on the four elements of Hip Hop, so she came along with me.  I was pretty excited to introduce her to a style of music she's never really seen.  This is one of the parts of music I love, turning people on to new things.  I picked her up and we headed to Dallas.
I'm never good at getting to Deep Ellum OR Greenville via maps, but we made it and lucky enough got a parking spot right up front.  Like literally....right there.  I had to make sure it wasn't a tow zone it was too good to be true.
Crown and Harp is a pretty decent bar.  It has two levels.  I went to the top level to check it out, some guy with a laptop and soundboard.  Not really my scene.  I wonder if they could get a better DJ upstairs...or how that works.  Because that format is awesome, I love it when a person has options.  The bartender looked rather bored.  There was already a good crowd at the beginning of the night downstairs, mostly men.  Someone commented that I didn't look like a girl who'd be interested in a scratch session.  Touche'.  I believe I say that about people all the time.  I love watching a real DJ perform.  It's like magic.
It would be hard to comment on each DJ individually.  I can definitely say talented individuals were on the decks this night!  From beginning to end good music played, beats were made and scratched, the crowd LOVED it, and we even had an all vinyl act courtesy of DJ Love.  It was extremely mind blowing.  If I had to pick my top three favorites it would be DJ Spiderman, D. Tek, and DJ Love.  All three had excellent song choices, great beat, and they just took over the set.  At one point, DJ Love pushed his set partners, DJ Ph00ka's, fader over when he was finished.  DJ Spiderman was killer on the beat pad.  You could tell he was enjoying himself too, gotta love an animated DJ.  D. Tek cuts it up like no one I've ever seen.  He even showed off with a couple around the back maneuvers.  DJ Love used ALL VINYL, which is big ups in my book.  I can wait to see these guys on their solo night, I almost wish this was a weekly so it wouldn't TAKE SO LONG!!!
More females came in steadily through out the night and toward the end people were even dancing a bit.  The music was great the entire night, from beginning to end.  Crown and Harp is a decent little venue, it's starting to grow on me.  Doesn't have the normal Dallas "scene" like say, Trees.  It's a little more intimate, not fancy but not a dive.  If I could only figure out how to leave that area without getting lost.....
Pitaru said she really enjoyed the music.  It was like nothing she had ever seen.  Callie Dee's job is done!!!  One more person introduced to magic.

Human Resources at Froggy's
So, you know I'm a good friend when I leave MY benefit to go watch someone perform because "It may be the only time."  Call me a push over.
I got to Froggy's Boathouse for Ariel's birthday bash around 11pm.  I surveyed the crowd, found the Sir Kutta from DK and his crew (Happy Birthday!), Muenster and Anetix right away.  Good company.  D. Tek and Def 1 joined shortly after and I even ran into Wrex and RJ Tree Killah.  And honestly, this was the most packed hip hop event I've seen in Fort Worth lately.  Big props Ariel.
Anetix took the stage, and I had to see this spit fire.  I love watching him perform.  Not only are his lyrics meaningful and intelligent, but he delivers them with such passion and fervor you just can't help but get drawn in.  I've gotten the pleasure to know this guy, and he's the kind of life we need in the hip hop scene.  He's a good boyfriend, father, he's driven, intelligent, and I've said this before, had I not seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't think this guy was an MC.  I'm looking forward to more out of this guy.
Next performance I watched, Human Resources.  I've heard they could be the top hip/hop group in DFW.  I can see that.  But due to some really crappy sound problems, I didn't get to witness them in their fullness.  What I did see was decent, but the sound guy did these guys a disservice.  Someone told me, if you play at Froggy's, bring your own equipment.  With that being said, I think we need a do over.  These guys need to perform one more time with a better system.  I don't care where, just do it.  I liked the dynamic between all the different MC's and I already know D. Teknics is good at what he does.  So someone make that happen *ahem*.  Listened to them on Facebook, and I definitely like it.  I could totally bump this in my car on repeat.  Especially "Eye's Out for the Light".  Love it.
Froggy's in general is a decent spot.  The back patio area is kind of cool minus the pool.  Ew.  The bathrooms had no paper towels and were a bit iffy.  But for certain types of parties, this spot would work.  I suggest not serving in plastic cups.  I, for one, prefer to drink out of a glass.  Period.  No plastic, no cans, GLASS.  But to each their own and I just ordered Bud Light in a bottle.  Oh, and did I mention the sound sucked?  Made me miss Lola's.

Callie Dee Presents: Revenge of the Nerds
WHAT A NIGHT!!  I just threw the best party in Fort Worth, no doubt.
Sissy Ross started the evening with some chill music while Lost Child sang with smooth jazziness out back.  There were $1 PBR and $2 wells, photobooth, and Patsy the Taco lady.
Doug Funnie took the stage a little before 11p and this guy puts on one heck of a show.  He's a very creative, talented, "out side the box" lyricist, spits his lyrics with perfect beat, while taking over the stage.  I couldn't help but dance the ENTIRE time he was performing.  He even performed my favorite song about Velma off Scooby Doo.  He tells a story before going into the song, totally original and I totally dig it.  Be looking for him on more of my events, and don't miss the chance to see this guy perform.
About this time, Psychedelephant took over the patio playing some chill, acid jazzy experimental music.  This was a perfect combination to off set what was happening inside.  Dance music inside, chill out music outside.
Then the part of the evening we were all waiting for- Def1 and D. Teknics took over the 1's and 2's.  They had  pre planned set that was timed with the Revenge of the Nerds movie.  Every song mixed was OFF THE HOOK.  At one point, we had a break dancing circle with some pretty amazing talent including Jennifer "Bout It" and Deso from Virtuoso Tattoo. I hope they come to EVERY show I have.
I've got to say I was a little disappointed with the turn out this evening.  This was one of the best line ups and themes I have come up with so far.  D. Teknics and Def1 are THE best DJ's in the area.  Doug Funnie one of the top MC's.  The fact that people weren't lined up at the door to see them is beyond me.  I know there was a new bar opening and a ton of other shows going on, so hopefully when I have this lineup again, they'll get the love they deserve.
Don't forget next Saturday is my I <3 the 80's Birthday Bash at the Where House.  We'll have DJ Ozmel, Ducado Vega and Zenya Vi, Def 1 and Diverse Teknics, Vegabundos, Night School Ninjas and Ronnie Heart!!!!!  Gonna be a blastie.
