“Perhaps...” he hummed. “Let’s try something else.”
The scientists in the room all ceased at once, sensing the change in the air. It made you take pause, too. Your blood ran ice cold at the sight of his beady eyes as they glared down at you. Whatever he said next, you knew it was just an excuse for torture.
“Sir?” someone asked timidly, but you couldn’t look away.
“Marrow biopsy,” he said simply. It sent his workers scrambling for the correct tools.
Dread lit up your veins like the town’s Christmas tree. You knew what those words meant; knew you were truly in for it.
“Morphine, sir?”
“Unnecessary,” Strucker answered, tone sickly.
“But the patient...” a scientist dared to argue. Strucker’s eyes flicked to them out of irritation.
“The subject will be fine when we have a drug that works,” he seethed.
He wheeled the operating desk sideways and you saw the glint of metal tools. He turned away from you then, arm held out as he waited.

“Very well,” he told the room. “Let’s begin.”

You didn’t get to admire your handiwork but you heard his howl. The other scientists either grabbed for you or called for security. You prayed your powers would work. You fumbled with the leftover restraints, choking down a sob when you cut yourself free.
You leapt off the table, feeling too much like a feral animal. Everyone in the room faced you, and all you had was a measly metal shard that could dissolve at any moment. You tried to concentrate through the haze of oncoming hyperventilation. Still, you held the blade out, keeping them back. Warily, you glanced past the front row to see a wrathful Strucker.
A scientist stepped forward, murmuring placating words. The rest of them used the opportunity to creep closer like the predators they were. So, you swallowed your conscience and launched yourself at the man. The shard slit his neck easily.
You didn’t stay to watch the blood spurt, although you felt its hot splatter. Strucker’s shrill sounds of glee amidst the chaos made you want to vomit.

You stuttered to a stop as a matted, russet-haired woman stepped into the doorway. You hadn’t realised they’d called her in as back-up.

Her palms caught both your cheeks in a strong hold, warmed by your salty tears. She stared at you, but it was like she looked through you.
“Wanda, please,” you begged, latching onto her wrists. Her blank expression seemed to falter then, her face twitching with a small frown.

When Jason’s heavy boots landed on the fire escape, you didn’t even flinch. Your knees were hugged to your chest as you looked out over the Gotham skyline without really seeing it. He noticed how rarely you blinked, and when you did, it was languid and delayed. There were tear tracks down your cheeks, too, fallen from glassy eyes.
You were in your summer pyjamas, skin exposed to the world. That wasn’t particularly unusual for you, but he realised that something was off in this instance.

You blinked. “Not yet.”
Your tone was hoarse as it scraped against his eardrums. He repositioned himself, shifting into a position that closer mimicked yours. “Why’re you out here?”
You didn’t say anything for a while. Jason watched as you rubbed at your wet cheeks, keeping your attention on the dreary cityscape.
“Couldn’t be in there.”
“Why?” he pried. Your words swiftly activated his paranoia. He dragged himself to the window to peer through it. He found nothing of particular interest. Absently, he observed that the television wasn’t on tonight.

Jason said your name softly. “Don’t do that to yourself.”

Jason let his head tip against the wall and took in several deep, icy breaths. He felt more at peace now—less wary. He had to fight the urge to let his eyes shut in the tranquillity of the Gotham night. The shy heat of you next to him warmed his side. He listened to the car horns that echoed from the streets below. The little dots of lamps and people glittered stirringly.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed your own aura had lightened; the sombre blue now a plum. He trailed after the mesmerising hue to where it encroached his. The crimson bled into chalky magenta as it met.
Jason’s heart throbbed when he looked at it. He wished that if he touched the intermingled colours, it would feel cosy, like sitting next to a fire in a cabin far away from here. Like the one Bruce had taken him to one snowy winter when he was young.
But he knew it wouldn’t feel like anything to his gloved hands. The only ache he would feel was that of his stiff fingers. Still, they itched to move closer, on account that they had a mind of their own.
A sniffle knocked him out of his reverie. He looked up as you wiped at your nose.
His voice was low as he asked, “You going back to bed?”
“No. All yours,” you said, just as quiet.
Jason made a noise as his shoulders rose and fell. He tore his attention away from the shroud around you and instead focused on your awkward fidgeting.
He began to shrug off his leather jacket, followed by his jumper. He tugged it over his head one-handedly, then replaced the jacket, trying to conserve some of his heat. Jason stuffed the red hoodie into your lap. He stared, waiting, a little nervous because of the bold action. It was something he could play off as neighbourly concern, he argued pathetically.
“Put it on,” he said, exasperation clear in his voice when you didn’t acknowledge it. You still didn’t comply. Jason rolled his eyes. “Put it on or I’ll throw you over my shoulder and nail the window shut,” he warned.
“You won’t be able to climb through then,” you said with a side-eye. He shrugged.
With a huff, you pulled the jumper on. It was wider than you needed, but the extra space was pleasant. It immediately felt warm and snuggly against your freezing skin. You hadn’t realised how chilly it was with the sensation in your limbs long staved off.
You tried for discreet as you ran the pads of your fingertips over the cloth, revelling in its softness. You were surprised to find no blood stains, though you figured you’d be hard-pressed to see them against the red. Good choice, you thought bemusedly.
Jason noted the quiet snort you kept to yourself. He watched you bring the sleeve closer and nuzzle into it. You stayed there for a minute, buried and breathing him in. A strange feeling settled in his chest at the scene; made him swallow demurely. It was a softness—a tender flicker of maybe’s or could-be's about the future.
He tried not to think about how bewitching you looked, swathed up to the neck in shades of red and purple, with the moonlight that reflected off your calm and curious features.
A noise escaped from the back of his throat. Abruptly, he looked away. Cut the shit, he told his brain sternly.
“You smoke,” came your surprised voice.
“Yeah. Sometimes.” His tongue dashed over his bottom lip. “Sorry.” He could really do with one right now, he thought.
Jason risked a glance. Your chin now sat on your arm, which rested upon your knee. You watched him too, eyes thoughtful as you took in his disguise.
“Are you going in?”
“And miss the sunrise?” he murmured weakly.
You hummed, peeking at the horizon. The beginnings of colour blazoned across the sky, but shadows still survived for the time being.
You moved again—to his ire—but this time the distance between you disappeared. Your wriggling shoulder pressed into his. Your eyes washed over him, chins far too close to each other, before your interest wandered away.
His gaze remained on you though. He watched as the legs that were once curled to your chest, loosened. One knee dropped, coming to perch atop his own. His eyes widened. Jason stared at it, unsure about the closeness. This time, you’d initiated the contact. This wasn’t his doing. He didn’t need to feel guilty.
But he did, because he couldn’t help himself; couldn’t stop the way his hand readily crept towards your knee.
He thought his heart was going to give out when your fingers brushed his. It was only light—a test of the waters—but he could see it happening. He had to chide himself because his behaviour was straight out of those Austen novels he indulged in.
When he didn’t pull away, you linked your pinky and ring finger around his shortest digit. You placed both your hands upon your bare skin. It was an open invitation to share the delicately human moment, and he went willingly.
Jason made a helpless noise. He was yet again malfunctioning in your presence.
He was grateful that his thoughts had gone blank for the most part: no void, no Batman or Joker. Only his own childish reprimanding, his desperate desire for connection, and that pretty pink envelopment between you.
Friendship, he repeated to himself. This is friendship. Friendly thoughts.
Shit.
Fuck.
He was going to ram a Six Flag’s pole up his own ass.

Tia and Honey’s voices carried over the peaceful thrum of the diner, although you heard it as if you’d been shoved underwater. Your brain was mush from the disrupted sleep, and thus made the chitchat sound like it had been through at least two garbled filters. You were pretty sure you were only half an hour away from hallucinating mutant rats climbing up the walls. Or, who knows, maybe they were real.
You jolted back into reality when one of them called for your attention.
“You okay?” Honey asked, looking you over. She reminded you a lot of Dawn, if you could say that from one meeting. They both had a calm, careful, but interested disposition. It didn’t help that they were both blonde.
You caught Tia’s perfectly raised brow, though it was but a haze to you.
“Yeah, yeah...” you fumbled, trying to look like you hadn’t been falling asleep mid-conversation. “Long day.”
“Late night?” Tia was quick to pry, earning an irked groan from both you and the blonde. She was going to be annoyed if you’d withheld gossip from her all day.
Honey waved her off. “Didn’t sleep well?”
You shrugged. “I had a nightmare, s’all.” You looked between them, seeing their expressions waver simultaneously. There was a tell-tale twitch from Tia that signalled she was about to ask for more information, but—
“Oh, you think you’re living in a nightmare?” interrupted a chiding voice from besides you, one that was young but rough around the edges. Fern collapsed into the booth with a loud, obnoxious whine. She sprawled at an odd angle in the small space. “You should try being groped for nine hours straight,” she said. For further dramatic effect, she threw her apron onto the table, narrowly missing the couple on the other side.
You rolled your eyes, tossing the apron back at her. She pushed it off and sat up with a huff, making sure to glare at you. Honey and Tia stared at you, waiting.
With a deep sigh, you looked between them all. “This is Honey,” you introduced, “and the smartass next to her is Tia.” Tia scoffed, but you ignored her. “This is Fern. She works here.”
Tia bit back her ‘Oh really? Couldn't tell,’ and instead asked, “You another of Donna’s friends?”
“The Amazoningly-tall one?” Fern scrunched her nose. “Hell no. She could tear me in two.”
You laughed at that, as did the two other women. It was most definitely true, especially with your recent findings.
You looked at Fern. “Did you manage not to murder anyone?”
“Well... just barely,” she gave an exaggerated sigh. “I’m gonna cry into my mountain of tips as stress relief later, though.”
That pulled another laugh from the table.
“You should’a seen the stink-eye Franny gave me all afternoon for it. It’s like she wanted to be harassed.”
“Did you tell her off?”
She shot you a withered look. “Of course I did. But I don’t think she’s as into it as the customers.”
You shook your head, amused.
Fern’s focus moved to Honey. “I was gonna say Honey’s a funny name, but...”
She grinned. “Guess we both have weird parents.”
“Yeah... My pa’s proud of it,” Fern said with a roll of her eyes.
“So, Tia, what are you going to do now with all of your free time?” you butted in. At her look of confusion, you added, “You’re not going on dates every weekend anymore, right?”
Tia’s face transformed into a scowl. You only smiled, giddy at getting retribution for her constant jabs. You glanced at Honey. She was clearly entertained by Tia’s uncharacteristic embarrassment.
“You guys are together?” Fern piped up. She looked between the two with interest.
“Oh,” Honey hummed, “don’t ask me.” She turned to Tia, expression neutral, but you saw how she fought a smile. Your own grew. It looked like you’d wandered into unchartered territory for the not-couple couple.
For the first time ever, you saw a flush under Tia’s brown skin. Her head ducked as she tried to hide it. “Yes,” she grumbled.
“What was that?” you said, grinning plainly. Daggers were launched your way.
“Yes.”
“Well, s’pose that clears things up,” Honey said in a breezy tone. She swept an arm around Tia’s shoulders, pulling her close enough to plant a kiss on the very edge of Tia’s mouth. Her scowl lessened as she was placated by her honey.
Both you and Fern laughed at the affectionate display.
But it wasn’t long before Tia set her sharp eyes on you again. You winced at the determination in them.
“You know...” she started, and already you wanted to scurry away. Oh no.“I’ve never seen you in such a garish colour.”
For a moment, your brain scrambled to catch up. You followed her gaze, down, down to—
The red hoodie. You chomped on the inside of your cheek. You’d decided to leave it on after Red had lent it to you, not thinking it would be a big deal. Did that mean you’d only changed your pyjama pants and not your shirt, too? Well, potentially. Minute details.
Shit. You’d been silent for too long. “So?” you tried.
Tia ignored you. “Have you, Fern?”
You swiftly looked to the red head. Her eyes narrowed as she studied the jumper. She tried to paw at it, but you slapped her hand. “Don’t think so,” she answered.
“Hmm,” Tia said, making a big show. “So, where’d it come from?”
“Nowhere,” you said stubbornly, crossing your arms.
“Did you happen to lose sleep over Detective Grayson?” she suggested with a sly smile. At this, even Honey looked intrigued by the suggestion.
“A detective? My, my,” Honey tutted.
“No!”
“It’s definitely a man’s size,” Fern confirmed.
“Tia,” you sighed, “I told you there’s nothing going on with him.”
She only raised her eyebrows, unfazed. “Well, it’s someone’s.”
“Maybe I just wanted a bigger jumper.”
“Alright, enough,” Honey cut in firmly. Your expression morphed into gratefulness, although it fell with her next words. “Give me your arm. I’ll settle this.”
You pouted since you knew where this would lead. You let her take the sleeve, albeit with a childish whine. She pressed her nose to the red fabric, inhaling pensively.
And then, in a grim tone, she announced, “Smell’s like a man.”
“Honey!” you cried, ripping your arm away.
“Sorry.” She sent you a faux-apologetic smile.
All three of them stared at you, expecting an explanation.
“Spit it out,” Tia said.
“I borrowed it.”
Her tongue clicked. “Oh, you’re full of it.”
“I did,” you were quick to insist.
Fern decided to drop another bomb at that moment. “From who? ‘Double cheeseburger combo’?” she asked coyly.
The look you shot her would’ve been enough to send her to an early grave—if only she was scared of anyone but Donna.
The group descended into a lull at the revelation. Honey and Tia looked between themselves with raised eyebrows and wide eyes—a silent conversation.
And then, the table fell into a cacophony of ‘who’ and ‘when’ and every other possible question they could think of to solve the mystery of the red jumper.

Jason had taken up his favourite position in all of Gotham city: perched upon a rooftop where the whisps of smog comforted him. Although this one in particular lacked his gargoyle friend, he found company in Arsenal. Well, Roy would call it hanging out, but really, they were on a mission, as he had to remind him every time the conversation veered off.
“You sure this is the right place?” Roy asked, sounding bored. He rested on his elbows as he watched the night sky. The two of them had been staring at a warehouse for the last two hours with nothing to show for it. It had remained completely dark and empty.
Jason snorted humourlessly. “You’d be surprised how much dead guys like to talk.”
Roy grimaced. But it had been a vengeful ghost who’d tipped Jason off to Black Mask’s meeting, after all. Guess loyalty wasn’t unwavering when you had the bad habit of killing your henchmen.
Roy tried to ask, “You good, Jay?”
“Later, Arsenal,” he cut him off as he noticed a couple of SUVs pull up at the back of the warehouse. “Think we’ve got company.”
Roy straightened as he spotted the incoming vehicles too. “Huh,” he murmured, now interested in said change of events. His head tilted. “We waiting first?”
Jason nodded, observant gaze not straying from the people that began to exit the cars and file into the building. His HUD told him the goons were all carrying; ready for—or ready to—incite the worse, of course. He saw the man himself then, in the middle of his men as they went inside.
Jason’s lenses blinked urgently. He traced the light to where a large van appeared on the opposite side of the building. Another van parked further down the street, out of sight. There was an ass-load of weapons in both trucks.
Roy groaned from beside him, likely noticing the same. “This isn’t just a fun get-together, is it?”
“No,” Jason agreed. The cases inside the first truck were hastily unloaded and hauled out.
“Alright,” Roy heaved, picking himself up. He stretched his arms and legs and then looked to Jason for confirmation. “I’ll go ‘round?”
“Yeah,” Jason said with a curt nod. “Watch out,” he muttered the afterthought.
Roy shot him a crooked grin. “Unlikely.”
A few moments later, he bounded across the rooftop and aimed his grappling hook for the next rooftop.
He was half-way to his destination when a strangled noise came through the comms. Roy abruptly halted, twisting as he searched for Jason.
“Oh, fuck.”
He just caught sight of him as he tumbled through the ceiling that gave way.

He heard a crackled, “Red Hood,” in his ear a couple of times before it became a strained, “Jason.”
Jason looked up to where he’d fallen through. A skylight cracked and had rained glass around him. He berated himself for not having noticed it before falling victim to a fucking roof.
“I’m fine,” he warbled, finally letting his partner know he was alive.
Jason peered around the room. It looked like it was mainly used for storage and otherwise devoid of life. Just him, shipping boxes, and now a pile of glass. He pulled off his helmet.
Jason coughed through soot that filtered through the air. He hoped things hadn’t gone sideways since he’d derailed the mission.
An abrupt, familiar giggle sent chills down his spine. Jason whipped around as he searched for the culprit, though he found nothing.
His eyes landed on the far side of the room: a glowing doorway, of which that grating voice carried through.
Jason swallowed thickly.
He couldn’t let it be when he heard other muffled sounds. Hostages, his senses alerted him.
Previous mission forgotten, Jason dragged himself off the floor. He kept his fists clenched around his gun as he walked towards the bright light. Something in the back of his mind murmured that this wasn’t the same energy he’d felt when everything went dark. He didn’t know if he should be relieved, because wasn’t facing your murderer worse?
He swept the room as soon as he entered it, but stopped dead once he saw what waited for him. It was a full house: all of Bruce’s apprentices seated at a formal dining table. The room was dressed to the nines with linen, fancy spoons, and a grand chandelier that hung above it all. Much like the ones in the Manor.
The only odd thing besides his entire family having dinner with the Joker? They all wore rattan sacks over their heads. Each costume looked off, soaked in crimson beneath the rags.
A strange melody played softly in the background, but it scratched, making the scene all that more jarring. Jason’s breath hitched.
That bizarre giggle sounded from behind him. “Ah, finally! Our special guest!” Claws dug into his shoulder and forced him to the table.
He tried to figure out who each person was. They didn’t speak. There was a smaller, unfamiliar Robin at the very end. When he leaned back, he saw how everyone had been zip tied to their chairs.
He could only watch with wide, terrified eyes as Alfred entered the room, carrying their dinner. His mouth had been scored from ear to ear, dried blood stuck to the unyielding curve of gore.
Alfred placed a serving dish in front of him and fixed Jason with that clownish smile. The lid lifted and his meal was presented: Batman’s sawed-off head. He jerked so hard backwards that the chair slammed into the ground.
Jason looked up just as each Robin slumped forward. Their bodies hit the table and the sacks fell off to reveal their headless-ness.
Alfred was quick to jeer, “Baked fowl not to your taste, Master Todd?”
Jason’s hands slapped to his neck, feeling the sudden warm heat of blood across his cut throat.
He scrambled upwards, choking on iron. There were more bodies to his right: Donna, Roy, Raven, Gar, you. Your head half hung off your body, spewing blood like those at the table. Your blank, dead eyes looked at him in an eternal plead.
“That’s dessert,” the Joker crooned over his shoulder.
It was too many people slaughtered because of him. Gasps racked his body as he continued to stumble backwards. He limped, eyes never straying from the torment in front of him even as Joker scream-laughed.
He ran straight into a broad chest.
“Shit, Jay,” Roy said as he stopped his stride. There was concern in his eyes even as he said, “You numbskull.”
Jason couldn’t talk. The only thing that escaped his mouth was air. Roy stood there—alive. He looked over his shoulder. The room he’d just escaped was the same as this one: full of boxes, lit by starlight.
Roy took him in, growing more agitated by Jason’s silent but quaking form. “Are you—?”
But the question was drowned out by a round of gun fire. Jason’s head snapped towards the noise. It’d come from their original post.
“Fuck,” Roy cursed. “C’mon.”

The pounding in Jason’s head hadn’t subsided in his venture back to the safehouse. He wasn’t sure how he’d managed in his state, either, or how he’d convinced Roy to leave him alone. He knew there was a crack in his helmet; felt the flurry of air as it passed through. His Kevlar had been pelted over and over, dented so thoroughly that it bit into his chest, leaving nasty bruises. The pressure on his ribs told him he’d likely copped a couple of bullet wounds, too.
His shoulders and knees ached as he pulled himself up the fire escape. Despite it being his body, Jason didn’t feel like he was in it. He floated alongside it, listening to the wheezes that sounded foreign. It was the leftover adrenaline that kept him going, hoisting him up the rungs.
Jason pushed the window up with a groan. The motion made the nerves in his back flicker to life like little fires under his muscles. He swallowed bile as he gathered the strength to sling his leg over the sill.
As he stepped over the threshold, he was zapped back into his body at the sight of you.
“Red?” you said, startled out of your thoughts. You put down the cup you’d been drinking from. The faint lights that emanated from nearby appliances slid over your sleepy face. “Red?” your voice sounded fretful then, taking in his slumped form.
Jason didn't respond, throat tight. God, why couldn’t you be asleep for once? Why hadn’t he thought this through, either?
Why’d you have to be standing there, looking at him like you gave a shit?
“Red?” you prompted again and closed the distance. He started for the bathroom, avoiding looking at you.
“I’m fine,” he croaked. “Go to bed.”
You tried to grab his elbow as he pushed past. He stuttered to stop, shaking. He stared at the arm attached to his, blood cold as he wondered if he’d look up and find the headless version of you.
He ripped his arm out of your hold. “Don’t.” His tone was cutthroat. He limped towards the bathroom.
“What happened?” you demanded, hot on his tail. “You’re hurt! Tell me why,” you said, voice raising.
He whirled around, causing you to bump into his chest in your haste. “It’s none of your business,” Jason seethed.
You made a noise of contempt. “You’re bleeding on the God damn floor!”
He let out a huff, but otherwise remained quiet. That seemed to irritate you more.
“We live together! Let me help you.”
“That wasn’t part of the deal!” Jason said loudly, mechanically. His head throbbed at the voices that vibrated inside his helmet. The Kevlar that stabbed him hurt like hell and the stinging holes in his chest burned. He needed to find a way out of this.
“Why would you want to be friends with a vigilante?” he spat, hoping to get you off his case. “Have you learnt nothing?”
You stiffened. Jason took the opportunity to enter the bathroom. He rummaged through the under-the-sink cupboards for the supplies stashed there. Your presence lurked in the doorway.
“Why won’t you let me in?” You spoke to his back. “I thought we had trust.”
He ignored your weighty words, not giving you the bare minimum of eye contact as he flippantly said, “You should stop spilling your guts to strangers. It’s gonna get you killed one day.”
You tried to swallow the growing lump in your throat. Why did it feel like you were being fed to the wolves?
“Tell me why you’re hurt. Tell me your name. Tell me something.” It came out a beg; made his heart stir painfully. Still, his patience was stretched beyond thin.
Jason turned around, nostrils blazing. “What made you think I care about you?”
It sent a jolt through your chest, a sharp lightning strike of betrayal. Your faith in him crumbled to dust. He'd seen your scars and pissed all over them.
You felt that frightful tingle as it crawled into your fingertips, looking for trouble. You stared at his helmet as an uncontrollable anger bubbled within. His taunting words repeated on a cycle. You heard your maker above it all, granting you permission to self-destruct.
Jason smiled thinly under his mask. He saw your struggle but revelled in it. He liked feeling your rage directed at him; made it easier to push you away for good.
A sick thought in the back of his brain wanted to see if his uniform would simply fall apart against your strikes. At least if you made the choice to kill him, he wouldn’t have to watch you suffer under the Joker’s hand.
Your mouth opened and then shut, as you changed your mind about what you wanted to say. You both stood there, breathing hard in the confined space. The air fogged with it. You fought the urge to throttle him while he egged you on in silence.
“Red—”
“I don’t need you or your help.”
There was another pregnant pause.
Blood rushed to his head. Fuck—was he going to pass out? His plan would go to shit then. You’d never let him go.
Your fists clenched into tight balls, nails biting into your skin. Hurt was plain on your face, but you persisted nevertheless. “If you don’t open up to someone, you will die alone.”
The strained tether holding him together snapped, cold words tearing through the last strand of his sanity. “You either live with it or you leave!” he shouted, and his voice reverberated within the metal coffin.
You flinched. Your eyes dropped to the floor. Even in the lowlight, he saw the glint of tears that rimmed them. His jaw clenched. Jason had to keep his arms pressed to his sides to stop himself from falling at your feet for forgiveness.
“You’re right,” you said, barely able to choke the words out. “You’re right. I shouldn’t... shouldn’t expect anything from a lifeless robot.”
You cleared your throat which drew his eyes back. The resigned look you wore broke his heart, like it had taken a dip into his stomach acid and somersaulted through his organs.
You left the bathroom. The bedroom door slammed shut.
He turned to the sink and couldn’t help but look in the mirror. He unlocked his helmet and let it drop to the floor. It shattered completely. He needed to see the broken man beneath.
Splotched in black and blue and a bloody nose, it wasn’t pretty. His scar stood out to him; reminded him that this—time and time again—was the fate he deserved.
A hollowness tunnelled through him, swallowing the grief and loneliness and anger. He stared into porcelain. Only two thoughts came to Jason: one, there was a good chance he was bleeding out, and two, maybe it was a good thing, because he’d really fucked things up for himself.
