NOSTALGIA UK
Sometimes it's not easy to be Discrete (1994)
I must admit, back in Jenan (my secondary school), Additional Maths for me was all about memorising formulas and spending endless hours applying them to sample exam questions. I actually found it fun—breaking down my "answer-finding" process into multiple lines of partial derivations to get to the value of x or y. It was never about solving problems—just about getting the right answer, if you know what I mean.
So when I started attending Discrete Mathematics classes with Dr. David Pitt, my brain just couldn’t handle it. Suddenly, it wasn’t about plugging numbers into formulas anymore—it was about solving real problems. And that’s when my mind jammed. I felt completely lost, like an idiot. It hit me that I had never really trained my brain to think logically or solve problems—I had only trained it to find answers.
It took me quite a while to finally get the hang of logical mathematical problem-solving. There were moments when I felt like giving up—especially when we got into topics like recursion (I can’t quite recall its mathematical equivalent). Anyone who has done programming knows what I mean—it’s one of those concepts that doesn’t come naturally to everyone. It’s easy to get sucked so deep into it that you would struggle to find your way out.
Dr. Pitt’s lectures were always held in a large lecture theatre since his students came from various courses, I presume mostly those doing Maths & Statistics. And I have to say—he was quite a character. Not because of his words, but because of his movements and gestures when lecturing. It was as if he was performing some kind of quirky dance routine 😆.
In the end, I think I finally managed to wrap my head somehow around Discrete Maths—at least most of it. And yes, some bits of it did turn out to be useful later on when I started working with algorithms and programming codes.

Graph Theory: In Discrete Mathematics
#NeedToKnow: Graph Theory
“Office Graph” by Matt Moloney/ CC0 1.0 Graph Theory in discrete mathematics, is the study of the graph. A graph is determined as a mathematical structure that represents a particular function by connecting a set of points. It is used to create a pairwise relationship between objects. The graph is made up of vertices(nodes) that are connected by the edges(lines). The applications of the linear…

While studying Discrete Mathematics and continued what I’ve left yesterday I was bound to some Truth Tables I skipped most of what I know already such as OR, AND Tables because I know already how it works but when I’ve been into the Conditional Table I was not fond and left me questions of the explanation in the video so I tried to break it down and analyze it by myself because he doesn’t even know how that turns out so I’ve figured it out and I’m very glad to share the trick on how I figure it out.  To explain things for clarity, the Table is the Truth Table it is composed of 1 = True and 0′s = False because its written in Binary format. So let’s begin!
"If it rains, then i’ll carry an umbrella.”
Now that is the statement, the Truth Table will serve as a guide in order to prove the statement given that it will achieve the same with some logic and proper reasoning. Let’s breakdown the statement into their respective sides.
P = it rains; Q = I’ll carry an umbrella.
The text in the right side which is the sentences are my proofs written in English in order to get the intuition and the idea of what is actually being proved in the respective row of the truth table. Just imagine that the explanation is not there.
Maybe some will ask how did I manage to achieve these kind of sentence, the answer is in the Truth Table. The 1 and 0′s is the one I’m following and just arranging the sentence according to the truth table. If its 1 then the statement will remain the same but if its 0 then you negate the statement given.
If P = 1 and Q = 1 the statement will be:
"If it rains then i'll carry an umbrella."  Which is intuitively True and expected if you think about real life scenario! If it rains of course you want an umbrella.
If P = 1 and Q = 0 the statement will be: "If it rains then i'll not carry an umbrella." Which is False! Because imagine in real life you are expecting an umbrella if it rains.
If P = 0 and Q = 1 the statement will be: "If it doesn't rain i'll carry an umbrella." Which is True! Why? Its because even if it doesn't rain you can still use umbrella in protecting yourself in the sun right? So imagine yourself your going somewhere of course there will be some people that want to be sure that they have an umbrella with them because they can still use with or without the rain so basically its True.
If P = 0 and Q = 0 the statement will be: "If it doesn't rain, i'll not carry an umbrella."
There are many aspects why this is True and its quite tricky! By analyzing the sentence there are some who will not carry an umbrella because they know in fact that it won’t rain so what’s the reason having an umbrella right? On the other hand there are some people that will still bring an umbrella with them even  if its not raining just to be sure.
Let me know guys if that helps you understanding it quite a bit. I’ll do a video explanation of this why the statement and truth table is correct and match.
