Live Nation's "Concert Week" initiative offers fans all-in tickets—including fees—for $25 flat.

For one week in May 2022, tickets to see your favorite artists will cost less than a meal at Olive Garden.

Yes, the unlimited breadsticks deal is amazing, but it pales in comparison to Live Nation's "Concert Week" initiative. Starting Wednesday, May 4th at 10AM ET (7AM PT), the entertainment goliath is offering fans all-in tickets to more than 3,700 shows across North America—including fees—for $25 flat.

Little Big Town Starts Off New Journey With ‘Nightfall’ Album & 2020 Headline Tour

The legendary Country band of four vocalists set off to a brand new start. With their latest album ‘Nightfall’ the group introduces new songs to the music industry. The ninth studio album is set to release on January 17 next year. Get your Little Big Town Chicago Discount Coupon and be ready for a blasting performance.

20 Galaxies: Legend in the Sky Chapter 9

My usual note about this chapter:

For those of you who are not familiar with American football, Quarterhill is a fictional town that would be located in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are rival football teams.

For those of you that ARE familiar and are doing a double-take at Favre being mentioned, reminder that this story takes place in 1998.

The Ferrari exploded out of the tunnel and whipped sideways, skidded across a road striped with wide arrows, inches away from hurtling through a guardrail and off a cliff. Beyond, the blinding sun blazed over the ocean. The water glinted as it dropped out of sight, hundreds of  yellow eyes melting in the incredible heat.

"Hurry up," Jayson said. "We gotta get home."

"Hold on," Randy barked. He threw the wheel to his left and pitched in his seat. He stretched to reach the gas pedal. "One more lap and Randy Fresnel is the winner of the Quarterhill 500!"

There was a squeal and a loud crunch from the game. Jayson groaned and smirked. "You'll have to sew Randy's hand back on before he can hold that trophy."

Randy yelled in frustration, startling a little girl playing Skee-ball behind him. "Vince!"

A broad hand appeared around the corner of the cabinet. "What?"

Randy stormed to the other side, where the opposing driver sat. Vince Tesla leaned casually against the backrest of his seat. His height and build made him look like a junior in high school, rather than the thirteen-year-old he was. His keen eyes gleamed mischievously in the dim arcade light. "I can't just let you take my high score."

"You only have so many high scores 'cause you cheat!" Randy jabbed a finger in Vince's face. "And you get to play free games!"

Vince brushed his hand away and jumped out of the chair. "That's loser talk. You gotta earn that place, short stack. Besides, my name looks nicer up there than yours." He tapped the screen, which was showing the high scores. "See it there? Doesn't it look great?"

"It'd be better without the Packer tribute," Randy growled.

Jayson laughed quietly. Vince was always looking for a reason to mention he was named after Vince Lombardi, for once, Randy had beat him to it. Vince, however, merely grinned.

Though this arcade was on Main Street, right in the middle of the tourist trap, and it was the high season, it was unusually crowded. Even more perplexing, Jayson noticed much of the crowd wore logos from Lakeside University, the community college in Vireo City. The majority of them were gathered around an old shooting game with a For Sale sign taped to the corner. The crowd was so thick Jayson couldn't tell who was playing. "What's going on?" he asked Vince.

"New game?" Randy said eagerly.

"No, we're trying to sell that one." Vince looked as perplexed as Jayson felt. He walked to the prize counter. "Hey Dad, what's going on?"

All the kids like Alan Tesla. The burly, deep-voiced owner of the Alley Arcade was rarely in a bad mood, and gave ticket and food discounts to the locals. A smile curved under his dusty mustache, he looked uncertain, but happy that a few more coins might go into the machines. He had a heavy Wisconsin accent that Vince only echoed in part. "Not sure. I asked around. They said that guy's the lead singer of some band."

"Who?" Vince pressed. "What's his name?"

"Shawn something. He's from Vireo City. I guess the band's getting real popular. I heard they were on Channel 6 the other day."

"Shawn Lanius?" Jayson and Vince exclaimed in unison.

Without waiting for a reply, the two rushed to the fringes of the crowd and tried to push their way through. "Wait, who?" Randy called. Despite not recognizing the name, he pushed as hard as either of them.

"Haven't you ever heard of the Shaddow Puppets?" Vince said.

Randy's expression soured. "Isn't that one of those sissy boy bands?"

"Not even close," Jayson said.

"They played at the big festival last year, remember?" Vince added. "Oh wait, sorry, your parents probably didn't let you stay up late enough to see them."

Randy shook a fist at him. Vince yawned. "Didn't you get beat up by Misty Elesti at recess?"

There was little room around Shawn himself, but Jayson picked him out of the crowd easily. He was on par in age with the crowd, with slick black hair and tan skin. He was taller than Jayson thought, and built in a way that was more imposing than his razor-thin figure should have allowed. He wore neat black jeans and a black collared shirt with a silver image of barbed wire across the chest. Jayson didn't know the game he was playing well enough to tell how he was doing, but Vince was nodding his head approvingly. Eventually the screen went red and the crowd groaned. "Continue?" popped up above a counter.

"You're pretty good at that game," Vince called. "It's for sale, you wanna buy it?"

Shawn barely glanced at him, but gave a lopsided grin as he put the light gun back in its holster. "You must be the owner's son."

If Vince was shocked about being recognized, he didn't show it. He merely gave a confident nod. Shawn answered the question before Jayson could ask. "They warned me about you. I see your name all over these machines. You taking over the arcade when your dad retires?"

Shawn had a slight accent Jayson couldn't recognize. He'd never noticed it when he'd heard Shaddow Puppets' music, and he'd heard it often. Ru had bought their CD at the festival, and their mother had gotten it signed once she learned Shawn and Jeremy Shaddow, the band's founder and lead guitar, were being interviewed at her station. It was one of the few bands he and Ru could agree on. Ru liked hard rock, which made up a good portion of Shaddow Puppets' songs, while Jayson normally liked hip-hop and rap.

"If I don't get into the NFL, I'll think about it," Vince said.

"Oh, so you're a football player, too?"

Jayson didn't like Shawn's tone. He spoke as if Vince was five years old. Randy butted in before Vince could reply, though. "Yeah, but get this. He doesn't even want to play for the right team. He's from Green Bay."

Some of the others in the crowd booed playfully. Jayson was not a football fan, but he recognized the logos. He picked out a few Chicago Bears decals amongst them. One of the girls near the back cheered. As usual, Vince was rather alone in this debate, and as usual, he showed no signs of intimidation. "Uh yeah, who was in the Super Bowl last year?" He cupped a hand to his ear. "How'd the Pack do this week? Oh yeah, Favre got those five measly touchdown passes. Just a team record. Guess that can't compare to the Bears getting stomped by Minnesota."

A pair of quarters glinted between Shawn's fingers. He gestured towards NFL Blitz, over by the wall. "C'mon, kid, let's see how good Green Bay is."

"All right!" Vince's eyes lit up. "It's about time I got a real challenge around here."

"Whatdya mean, a real challenge?" Randy shouted as Jayson dragged him outside.

The door squeaked shut. Randy pressed his face on the glass to get one more glare in at Vince. "Your mom's going to throw a fit if she finds out you were here," Jayson warned. "You're grounded, remember?"

"Who's gonna tell her, you?" Randy said.

"Mr. Tesla might -"

Jayson cut off as he nearly ran into someone standing at the mouth of the alley, fearful that it might be Mrs. Fresnel looking for her son. Mrs. Fresnel was wide, but not nearly as tall as the stranger in front of him, and Jayson was sure she didn't own a bright red hooded raincoat. The sun was perched behind the stranger's head, casting deep shadows into the void where their face would be.

The stranger suddenly spoke, what Jayson thought was one word. They pronounced it in a fluid, piercing way, as if it was an old outcast of the English language. Skaeya

"Did you say 'stay here'?" Randy asked, backing away. "I don't think so, dude."

The stranger's movements were completely soundless. Their coat didn't rustle, the one step they took towards the boys never shuffled or tapped against the concrete. The hair on the back of Jayson's neck bristled. This was what his mother always warned him about, those vague, dangerous strangers that he was supposed to take care around and never talk to. He wanted to go right back into the arcade, but he was frozen, his feet melded to the sidewalk. He sought the stranger's eyes in the darkness.

He found them and lost all thought. There was no fear left, just an inexplicable sense of awe.

The stranger turned and left.

Jayson's feet came unglued from the concrete. He immediately backed away from Main Street. "Who?" Randy started, stunned. "Who was that? My dad's right, this town is full of weirdos."

A glint caught Jayson's eye. He saw loops of thin silver chains near the foot of the garbage can by the arcade door. He went back and scooped the chains up, drawing out two pendants attached. The pendants glimmered so brightly in the evening haze they looked to have a light of their own. A ruby wolf and an emerald dragonfly.

"What's that?" Randy asked.

"Jewelry. They look like the stuff that comes out of Carmody's store." Jayson held the wolf up by the chain. There was something pleasant about the way the light struck it. "That guy might have been looking for them. We should go get him."

"Forget it!" Randy shuddered. "First of all, I say finders keepers. Second, I'm pretty sure that guy was serial killer or something."

"What, are you scared?" Jayson asked with a smirk.

Randy turned red. "No!" he barked, marching to the mouth of the alley. There was considerable relief in his voice when he said, "He's gone, anyway."

"It is kind of weird he had his hood up like that," Jayson said. "Let's ask Mr. Tesla if he knows who it is."

Mr. Tesla did not know. He seemed concerned, and offered to call their parents for a ride home, which Randy refused immediately and loudly. Mr. Tesla took the pendants and said he'd ask Carmody if they were his. The two boys left the alley in a hurry, more alert than they had ever been. Even so, neither one caught sight of Shawn as they left. His depthless eyes, sharp and icy, remained on the boys until they were out of sight.

Teaming with The Root Note, The Mint is a farm to table restaurant serving up all the local goods right to your plate. If you are on a budget, I highly recommend taking advantage of Sunday Craft Cocktail night. The craft cocktails are only $5 and appetizers are on sale.

I mean we are only students for four years, so we might as well soak up the discounts while we can. You are bound to run into some of your classmates working at Howie’s and most likely some of your professors throwing one back at the bar. There are enough TV’s at Howie’s that you will never miss a second of your favorite games.

It is a fall destination in La Crosse.

Did someone say waffles? These waffles are like no other. They are seriously FUNKY and out of this world. Every month they introduce a new specialty waffle. I promise, the drive is worth the overpriced waffle and the Instagram picture that comes with it!

Started from a food truck now we here. The vibes up in this joint will take you away on a Latin destination vacation. The specialty here: Venezuelan stuffed arepas! Arepas are made from cornmeal dough, formed into patties and cooked on a griddle. Then, they are stuffed with meats, veggies, cheeses, and topped with homemade salsas! Their mission is to make food from scratch with a whole lot of love. I recommend sitting on the patio in the sunshine!

Love, Simon at the Box Office

Hello, Tumblr.  One of my idiosyncratic fandoms is box office tracking and results.  If you’d indulge me for a hot minute, I would like to make a plea for you to go see this in theaters.

The following is a long post about box office numbers, life hacks for cheap tickets, and overall gay crying.

I have seen this film twice in the past 24 Hours, and I’m still struggling to find the exact words to properly describe how it profoundly affected me.

I’m somewhere between:

Love, Simon is a paint-by-numbers rom-com released by a major Hollywood Studio (Fox 2000).  Only the lead protagonist is a gay teen.  As Peter Travers of Rolling Stone states in his review:

A seemingly ordinary coming-of-age tale that looms large because of its inclusive romantic embrace, Love, Simon wins you over by capturing your heart without pushing too hard for the prize. ...  Yes, the plot mechanics tend to lean toward the disappointingly slick and sitcom-ish. But what redeems the film and makes it such an exuberant gift is the sincere joy Berlanti and the actors take in celebrating its protagonist's growing self awareness…. Love, Simon is a John Hughes movie for audiences who just got woke. And for all its attempts not to offend, it's a genuine groundbreaker.

I love this critique.  In Love, Simon no one dies, contracts HIV/AIDS, or is the victim of a violent hate crime.  The characters face complications and angst -- coming out in 2017 still is a huge undertaking with monumental stakes.  Yet in the context of this film, we understand that everything will be okay.  The genre makes it safe.  The audience knows that the homophobic bullies will get their comeuppance. The friends will make up.  The main protagonist will find love.

Love, Simon might not be perfect.  It might not be everything to everyone.  But it deserves its praise, and we (the LGBTQIA community) deserve to have more films like it, because everyone deserves to escape into indulgent, cotton-candy media where they can see themselves proud and happy.  Love, Simon is important; just as films like Black Panther, Girls Trip, Wonder Woman, and A Wrinkle In Time are important.

And we need to financially support it:

Money Makes The World Go Run

The film business is a business first.  Movies that don’t make money, don’t get sequels or start trends.  So I know, I know, I’m asking for a lot, but we need to embrace capitalism for just a second.

Love, Simon opened to a $11.5M Opening Weekend (OW) from 2,402 theaters.  

According to Deadline.com

Love, Simon drew 58% females, 42% males with 59% under 25. The movie over-indexed in the west, Northeast, and Midwest; slightly under-indexed in the Rockies; and under-indexed in the south and southeast. Top 20 markets that over-indexed include LA, NY, SF, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Minneapolis. Top grossing theaters came from LA, NY, SF, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, and San Antonio. Canada repped 5.6% of the weekend’s take.

Tumblr, you are driving this movie.  You are going to make it a success.  You have the power.  We need to get this film to bring in a total domestic box office (DOM) of 50M+

Love, Simon’s budget is between 10M - 17M, plus P&A (Print & Advertising) Marketing Budget.  I don’t have the P&A numbers.

There is a general rule of thumb in Hollywood called the 3X Rule.  It states that a film is a box office success if it makes 3X its production budget.  If a movie costs 50M to make, a 150M box office is a success.  This rule is NOT exact, because it does not factor in the Print & Advertising (P&A) budget of the film, or that a movie can do terrible at the box office but still be considered a financial success because of X-factors like merch sales (I’m looking at YOU Pixar’s Cars)

Love, Simon will need 51M to pass the 3X Rule.

It’s not impossible looking at the comps:

Everything, Everything 34.1M OW / 64.6M DOM (1.89X Multiplier)

Paper Towns 32M OW / 85.5M DOM (2.67 Multiplier)

The Fault Is In Our Stars 48M OW / 124M DOM (2.58 Multiplier)

But it won’t happen if we don’t get that multiplier up to a 4X+

Multiplier = The total DOM divided by the OW.  So for example:

Justice League (2017) 93.8M OW / 229M DOM = 2.44 Multiplier

The Greatest Showman (2017) 8.8M OW / 169.7M DOM = 19.04 Multiplier

We need to pull another run of legs like The Greatest Showman and keep it keep it theaters until Avengers: Infinity War (April 27, 2018).  Once IW shows up, the summer box office season kicks off, and, realistically, the jammed packed release schedule will push Love, Simon out of theaters.

We have Five Weeks - to go see this film, to tell everyone we know to go see this film, and support the cast and crew as much as we can.

The best way to do that is a positive Word of Mouth and Legs.

Word of Mouth: TALK ABOUT THIS FILM.  RAVE ABOUT THIS FILM.  Post on Twitter, on Facebook, on Tumblr.  Get a Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB.com account and post reviews.  You can NOT underestimate a good grassroots effort to get the word out.

Legs = Tied to the multiplier.  It’s how much a movie makes AFTER the opening weekend.  Movies like Justice League are front-loaded; meaning most ticket sales are opening weekend and in the first week. Other movies, like The Greatest Showman, have much stronger legs, where they earn a decent amount every weekend for a large total.

Weekend Drops: The percentage that a movie drops from week to week.  For example, Black Panther has had amazing holds with its (as of writing this) 5 Week Run: Weekend 1 242.1M Weekend 2 111.6M (-44.7%) Weekend 3 66.3M (-40.6%) Weekend 4 40.8M (-38.4%) Weekend 5 (26.6M (-34.7%) Even though it’s making less money every week, we can see that Black Panther’s domination over the marketplace is consistent.  Solid audience retention is why Black Panther is not dropping many theater screens, despite being out for over a month. This is the same reason why The Greatest Showman (which came out before Christmas) is STILL playing in 700+ theaters.  TGS actually had FOUR weekends out of its seventeen where it went UP from previous weekends, and had an average of a -20% week to week drop.

It is CRITICAL to Love, Simon’s success that this weekend only drops between 20% and 30%.  Some on the Box Office Forum I’m apart of are speculating that the next week will be CRITICAL to the success and failure of Love, Simon’s domestic box office run.

So, let’s go to the movies!

Only a few decades ago, travel shoppers could visit their regional travel agency to find discount travel providers and discount travel packages.

You can find a one-bedroom villa package at the most complete hotel setting, which gives you a golf course and a personal theater. For an 8-day, 7-night bundle at Welk Resort, Expedia will cost $2064.43; Orbitz will cost you $2236.40, and Travelocity costs $2063. If you know where to shop, you can find this package for as little as $298.

There's a little known secret that could literally save thousands of dollars on your next holiday, perhaps even measure up the value you get in exchange for your holiday dollars.

Work From Home in the Home Based Travel Business

There are basically 3 types of travel home based business opportunities.

1. Becoming a certified travel agent. 2. Marketing and Renting promotional vacation certificates. 3. Marketing travel membership clubs.

1. Becoming a travel agent requires licensing. You may book travel under the umbrella of a registered travel business using their travel agency IATAN number. After a certain quantity of sales and commissions earned you may apply for your IATA number. As a travel agent you can reserve your customers' travel using travel consolidators and marking up the cost to make a commission. Travel agents need to be bonded and licensed. Some hotel chains need the travel agent to complete their own travel brokers exam online so as to claim travel agent benefits. Becoming a home based travel agent is now a sought after home based business within the travel arena. Some members don't have the capability to use travel consolidators and may only use their own replicated travel portals sites to book travel. The commissions here are extremely low and the primary income comes from recruiting other members. Other travel agencies instruct the members to become fully fledged travel agents, where possibly the commissions on bookings can be a lot higher.

2. The certificates could be resold to businesses or businesses but generally can't be offered to the end user. Promotional items have become a part of the marketing arena and create consumer loyalty. If the promoter sells the certification to the end user a permit is required in most states and provinces in Canada. Everyone loves a fantastic bargain but many certifications have black out dates and need the spouse or partner to travel with the individual registering the certificate. Some certificates need a timeshare presentation. As a work at home business, the promotional certifications generally generate smaller commissions.

3. Some even provide concierge customer service, have access to huge databases of hotel vacations, cruises, flights, car rentals and much more. Some home based travel businesses have the additional bonus of earning money on travel booked from business portal sites. So as to resell traveling, the home based travel business must be a certified reseller of travel and should have their license number visible on their site. These discount travel memberships are popular not just as a means to make money from home for many thousands of members, but can also be popular as a real way to get deeply discounted rates for the educated and frequent traveler. The commissions on travel memberships can be extremely large, many businesses offering direct sales bonuses of over 50%.

Unlike other home based businesses and work at home opportunities, the travel business provides a product with market recognition. Everyone knows what a holiday is and what a cruise may entail. The Escape Game Chicago

Skydeck

We went up to the 103rd floor over 1353 feet high and into a room that was surrounded with windows looking out over Chicago. It was so beautiful!! I loved that you could walk around the whole building so you saw Chicago from all angles (city and lakefront).

Then there is The Ledge. . .  An all-glass room that extends outside of the building! Crazy!! But also crazy cool!

Cannon walked right out and started jumping and both Craig and I yelled for him to stop. But the Skydeck worker assured us it was totally secure! Gradually all of us made our way out there and it was a really cool experience.

It was a bit cloudy when we were there and I am hoping we can go back another time when the sun is out and the sky is clearer.

They are also doing a remodel of the Willis Tower building and soon their will be shops and restaurants on the bottom 3 floors. So once you are done taking in the views you can do some shopping and eating!

Tip: Get there early. There is actually an outside waiting line – at this time you can’t wait inside the building so be prepared for that. Plus if you get there early there is a better chance that the weather will be good and clouds/fog won’t block your view. To that point keep an eye on the weather and pick a day that looks as clear as possible. Book Your Tickets Now!

Best In Chow Food Tour – Chicago Food Planet

I have always wanted to do a food tour, but wasn’t sure how it would go over with the kids. It ended up being great! We choose the right tour that was all about classic Chicago food (deep dish pizza, Chicago style hot dogs, hot beef sandwiches) which is also a lot of kids favorites. The tour was 3 hours long and we walked about 1 1/2 miles around Chicago stopping at a variety of restaurants to sample the food and also some Chicago landmarks where our guide gave us a great history lesson on Chicago and on the foods we were trying.

It was cool how we included not only history on Chicago, but also a lot of history and interesting facts about how these foods ended up being Chicago classics.

Eating 5 different kinds of foods can sound like a lot, but with the walking and the breaks in between to learn more about Chicago, the food it was perfect. Plus it kept the kids occupied and full so they were great and really enjoyed it.

Centennial Ferris Wheel on Navy Pier

Head over to Navy Pier to go up on the Centennial Ferris Wheel! A fun way to get an amazing view of Chicago and the lakefront.

You can get tickets through the Go Chicago Card or Chicago Explorer or check with the Loew’s hotel – they sometimes have specials going where you can get tickets with your stay.

Chicago Magic Lounge

On Sunday the Chicago Magic Lounge puts on a show just for kids. We had no idea what to expect and when you get there you walk into a small laundromat room . . . we weren’t sure what to do so we started pushing some buttons. Then one of the machines opens up and lets you into a room where a lady is waiting to check you in.

She checked us in and the proceeded to pull a book on the wall that opened another wall that led us into the Magic Lounge. Such a fun way to get into the theatre!

From there we took our seat and ordered food and drinks and waited for the show to start.

The Magician did an amazing job and it was very interactive with the kids – calling up a lot of volunteers to help. Our kids happily kept their hands down, but definitely enjoyed watching the show.

At the end you are able to meet the Magician and pet his magic bird!

Andersonville

Our next stop brought us out to the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago just north of downtown. Chicago has 70+ neighborhoods and it was fun to explore one of them! It was still a bustling area with people walking around yet had more of a small-town feel then the skyscrapers of downtown.

We checked out the toy store that was filled with a collection of fun and unique toys. Some of them were even invented by people from Chicago. Then headed to the Women and Children First bookstore that had an amazing collection of books with a focus on women authors and topics. Then the candy store that had a unique and delicious collection of candy. All these stores were PERFECT for kids!

We also spent time at the Swedish American Museum learning about the people that came over from Sweden to Chicago then moved into the Andersonville neighborhood. The Museum was interesting but what the kids really liked was the children’s museum area upstairs! It was all about the journey people made from Sweden to Chicago with all sorts of hands on activities for the kids – milking a cow, picking vegetables from the garden, cooking in their house, boarding the boat, it was really cool!

Andersonville had such a fun and inviting vibe to it. You could also tell the people that lived there and owned the shops had such pride in their neighborhood and Chicago. There is something to the craziness that is downtown Chicago and the energy you feel there. But it was cool to get a little bit outside of that (about a 15 minute drive) and into a neighborhood where you still felt that same energy just in a less chaotic way.

Emerald City Theatre

Catch a play at the Emerald City Theatre. They have an amazing lineup of kid and family friendly plays and they do an amazing job. When we were there we saw the Fantastic Mr. Fox and their energy on stage was so engaging. Plus the theatre was smaller and more intimate so there was not a bad seat in the place!

If this is your first time brining your kids to the theatre or you are a seasoned veteran you will not be disappointed.

Skating Ribbon

In the winter check out the Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park. It is an awesome ice skating ribbon – not a rink as it is a curvy trail that goes around in a circle. You have amazing views of downtown Chicago while you are skating. It is a bit pricey at $15 per skate rental (same for kids)., but if you have your own skates it is free!

They have a concession stand area with picnic tables off of the ribbon. But be aware they have a Zamboni that comes through and fixes the ice for 1 hour multiple times throughout the day. So the ribbon is shut down during that time. . . which is frustrating when you get there right when that hour is starting!

Museums

Museum of Science and Industry

We could have spent all day here and wish we would have gotten here earlier since they had to kick us out when they closed at 5pm.The Museum of Science and Industry is one of our favorite things to do in Chicago with kids.

There are a lot of hands on activities and yes some of the things are pretty complex but kids have a way of finding how to make it fun for their age. Even if that means they aren’t doing it right but instead are just hitting a bunch of buttons.

They also have a kids area that is perfect for toddlers up to 10 year olds. And right next to the kids area is a farm area where you can drive a combine and sit in a tractor.

The highlight of our visit was the kids watching a baby chick hatch and come out of its shell. They stood there with their noses glued to the glass for a good 20 minutes waiting for the chick to come out. It was a really cool experience for them to see up close and personal.

We recommend giving yourself a whole day to explore the museum and either bringing a lunch or buying lunch at their cafeteria.

We parked on the street across from the museum and it was a perfect spot since we could walk to get pizza from the same spot. This is definitely one of the best Chicago museums for kids, we definitely recommend a visit!

Chicago Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum is located at Navy Pier. It is a multiple story museum and most of the things there are geared towards younger age kids 6 and under. Our 8 (almost 9) year-old found a lot of things to do and we spent a good amount of time in the building section.

We’d recommend this Chicago museum for kids 10 and under – and just know for older kids you will want to check out the exhibits and find the ones that are geared more towards older kids.

The house/restaurant/car areas always seem to be a big hit with our kids and they love playing house or setting up their own situations. In this case they really enjoyed being mailmen and setting up their “house” in the tree house area. It is fun to watch their creativity come to life when they are in Children’s Museums and can just explore at their leisure.

And of course the water room is always a hit and keeps the kids occupied for a while.

Cannon and Craig ended up spending an hour building a house while the other kids came and went exploring other areas of the museum. I don’t know who had more fun Craig or Cannon!

We ended up in the same boat where we could have spent more time but they were closing. What is up with all these museums closing at 5pm! We don’t really get moving until after lunch . . .

We recommend giving yourself a good 4 hours here or if you want to come earlier play for a while, then head out to Navy Pier to eat, then come back if your kids aren’t done playing!

Adler Planetarium

Have space lovers in your family? Check out the Adler Planetarium! The Planetarium location is awesome – right along the lake front and they have fascinating information along with great planetarium shows. Our kids really enjoyed The Universe: A Walk Through Space and Time exhibit along with the very hands on Planet Explorers exhibit.

They have a variety of shows available including one that is specifically for little kids – with Sesame Street characters in it! Check out the schedule here.

Shedd Aquarium

A huge aquarium with tons of great information and fish. LOTS of fish! We haven’t gone to the Shedd Aquarium very often since it seems like it is always busy . . . We have heard it is best to go first thing in the morning so you aren’t stuck waiting in line.

If aquariums are you thing it is worth making a visit. They have over 32,000 animals and over 5 million gallons of water. With exhibits on Beluga Whales, the Caribbean Reef, jellyfish, penguins, sharks and so much more.

Field Museum Of Natural History

We walked to the Field Museum from the RV park we were staying at and had a couple of hours to explore. We love how the museum pass gives us the opportunity to do this! Since we get in for free. There were a lot of really cool things to look at, but out of all the museums it was our least favorite.

It seemed like the kids felt the same way. We kind of quickly walked through all of the displays which did take a while since there are so many and it is a big museum.

If you want to check it out the Go Chicago Card is the recommended way to go for the best price.

Art Institute of Chicago

If you have a budding artist in the family or you are really into art then you won’t want to miss the Art Institute of Chicago. They also have an Artist Studio that they recommend you stop in to see what is going on the day you visit. I know for us hands on activities are the only thing that really makes an Art Museum work for our family. Or else their hands want to go to touching the art work . . . Where To Stay

Loews Hotel

WOW. That is what we all said when we walked into our room on the 14th floor overlooking Navy Pier with a play campfire and tent setup for us. If a room could be perfect in Chicago this would be it!

I love how the Loews hotel caters to kids and families. On our way in we were greeted with a package of toys for each of our 4 kids. Yes they each got their own! We had booked for the Snowed-Inn package so as I mentioned above when we walked in the room the tent was set up along with hot chocolate and cookies for the kids and an in-room movie of our choice.

After settling in we took a walk around the hotel and they have a beautiful lap pool for swimming, a spa and workout room. Along with an outside patio area that looked like it would be beautiful in the warmer months.

The location is also perfect since you are close to all the downtown activities, the Magnificent Mile and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. It was definitely hard to leave!

The Guesthouse Hotel

I don’t even know if it is fair to call this a hotel! We walked into the room and we couldn’t believe the high ceilings, the space and the gorgeous decorations! The owners had started down the path of building condos and then decided to change to a hotel. And we are the lucky recipients of these unbelievable hotel rooms!

We stayed in a 3 bedroom suite with 2 bathrooms (the master bath had an amazing shower that doubled as a sauna!) a living room, dining area and a full kitchen. It was hard to leave to go out to explore when the place was so great!

You can also let them know ahead of time if you want any baby gear (cribs, highchair, toys, etc) or games and coloring supplies for the older kids and they will have them there waiting for you.

The lobby area was also beautiful and they hold small weddings and conferences there. Or when events aren’t going on you can just go down to hangout by the fireplace or in the library – where they also have kids books and games.

Our visit felt more like we were visiting friends than staying in a hotel. Both Craig and I said we could live there!

Best Western River North

Another nice hotel option is the Best Western River North. This is a great hotel if you are looking for a more affordable option, but also want a nice big room. Plus it is located in a great location to be able to walk to a lot of the downtown attractions.

Our room was huge and had 2 double beds and a pullout bed. They also have a large pool that was perfect for our family and allowed the kids to burn off some energy.

Another plus was their onsite restaurant that had pizza for dinner, a bar and a great breakfast selection. It was snowing when we were there so it was nice that we didn’t have to leave the hotel, but could stay right on site to get a tasty and convenient dinner and breakfast.

Our kids favorite thing about the hotel was the free ice cream sandwiches and Push-Ups that they had behind the front desk. Plus they were unlimited so you could get as many as you wanted!

RV Option: McCormick Center Truck Marshaling lot

Check out our post on our stay for all the details. But basically it is a truck parking lot where you can park your RV and then walk or ride your bike to the museums and Navy Pier! It is nothing glamorous and there are no hookups but the location was pretty great.

Where To Eat

SafeHouse

I wasn’t really sure if I should put this under Attractions or Where To Eat since it is basically both! In order to get into the restaurant you have to give them the password and if you don’t know it they make you do a dance and flap your arms around like a chicken and then they let you in.

Little do you know everyone in the restaurant was watching your dance moves! So upon entering everyone claps and cheers for you. Good times!

You then sit down to order and are given all of the instructions on dinner and drinks as well as a set of clues for an in-restaurant scavenger hunt. There is also a magician in the house that does some pretty cool card tricks.

The food is done in packages that include an appetizer, meal and a drink (non alcoholic – but never fear there is a great selection of alcoholic drinks to pick from). You will not leave hungry assuming you can force yourself to sit down and eat!

We were having so much fun walking around taking everything in and trying to find the clues that our server had to come find us to tell us to come sit down and eat or it would get cold!

If you are there to celebrate or just for the heck of it – order the flaming dessert. It is a huge ice cream with ha flaming candle on top. The kids LOVED to end the night with this!

A totally awesome experience that everyone in the family will enjoy and remember.

Urban Belly

This place was delicious!! Our kids weren’t sure about trying the Asian inspired cuisine. They aren’t the most adventurous eaters. But by the time we were done they all LOVED it and wanted to come back the next day.

They had great kids menu options (a very simple fried chicken with white rice that even picky eaters would be OK with) plus some good sharing food like the dumplings and the huge bowl of soup. They even have sharing bowls out that you can use!

Craig and I loved ours as well and definitely recommend checking them out!

Bar Roma

Looking for upscale Italian dining? Then this is the place for you! It is located in the Andersonville neighborhood and had an awesome vibe and ambiance. The menu is somewhat limited as there isn’t a kids menu, but they were super accommodating and were able to make a simple pasta for our picky eaters. Plus they have a meatball option – 3 giant meatballs – that the kids loved!

Craig and I enjoyed the drink selection and our meals were fantastic! If you are looking for delicious pasta this is the place for you.

Giordano’s Pizza

After we were done at the MSI (Museum of Science and Industry) or I should say once they kicked us out when they closed . . . we took about a mile walk to Giordano’s pizza for a real deep dish Chicago style pizza. Be aware that these pizzas can take up to 45 minutes to cook so you may want to call ahead or just be prepared to wait. We ordered an appetizer to hold the kids over while we waited.

Gino’s East Pizza

I am from Wisconsin, but I don’t think I had ever had true Chicago deep dish pizza growing up. Yes, I have had Uno chain pizza, but it doesn’t even come close to comparing to true deep dish pizza in Chicago!

We visited Gino’s East (South Loop location) and sat in a booth where we could see out to the streets of Chicago. They also have a brewery so we had amazing pizza and microbrew!

It would be hard to say which one was better since I liked the crust better at Gino’s, but liked the sauce better at Giordano’s. But in either case both were good and I definitely want to eat at both places again. Trying all the deep dish pizza joints is definitely one of the great things to in Chicago with kids!

Doughnut Vault

If you follow us you know we always seek out the best donuts. Well, Doughnut Vault did not disappoint. They were yummy! It was an interesting place since you walk into a room about the size of a walk in closet and there is a lady behind the counter and she has all the donuts next to her (where you can’t even see them). And the flavors are listed on a board so basically you come in and tell them what you want and get out of the way for the next person. It is a popular place! We weren’t ready for that and normally let the kids see the donuts and pick what they want, so Craig took them outside and quickly made decisions off of what I thought the kids would want.

The donuts weren’t anything fancy but they were super yummy and all of us enjoyed them. They are definitely in the running for best donuts in Chicago.

The Bean/Millennium Park

I wasn’t sure what all the hype was about. I mean it is a bean looking thing in the middle of a park . . . then we went and saw it. It is actually really cool! Given the shape of it and the reflection you can look at it 20 different ways and see a different reflection. We had fun looking at all the different angles and going underneath it. Fun fact: Did you know it is actually named Cloud Gate not the Bean.

If you are in Chicago it is worth making a stop to check it out. It is located in Millennium Park and had we been in the city longer we would have scheduled a day to just hang out at Millennium Park. It looked like they had an amazing park for the kids and there was lots of room where we could have ran around and played tag and had a picnic. I also want to check out the crown fountain next time we are here.

Lincoln Park Zoo

A FREE zoo! Yes you read that right everyone gets into this zoo free all the time! They have penguins and polar bears. Plus farm animals and apes. If your kids are into animals add this to your list of places to visit while in Chicago. Also be sure to check their site for different events going on at the zoo.

Lakeshore Trail

We used the Lakeshore trail that runs right along Lake Michigan to walk and bike to most of the places we went and it worked out great. We stayed at the McCormick Center Truck marshaling lot so everything was close and most things were in walking/biking distance. You can learn more about where we stayed here.

Navy Pier

Looking to do some sightseeing and walking head over to Navy Pier and walk out on the Pier and through the restaurants and shops. It is only free if you don’t buy anything :). And they do have some cool activities and attractions so maybe worth spending some money here.

@sulpicia I got accepted to chicago internship and saw your post about interning in chicago. Which part of town did you stay (and the rent??)? Is it dangerous to walk around alone at like 9 or 10 at night even in relatively safe areas (not south)? Is it better to take uber than public transportation at night? How much did you spend for eating out weekly, and is the price similar to nyc's? What did you do when you got bored? Sorry for all these questions xD

I lived in Rogers Park which always seemed very safe, but I recently learned that there was a masked murderer who killed two people around there two years ago and was never caught which was kind of a yike. I think that area is generally fine though (as is like Edgewater and stuff). I found the place I sublet on a Loyola University sublet group and I think you could probably find similar stuff on groups for Northwestern, DePaul, UIC, etc. as a lot of people rent and will be gone for the summer. I think I paid like $650/month including utilities and then paid less because I was only there for 1/2 of August. The apartment was two bedrooms and the other renter wasn’t there for almost all the time I was living there, so I had the kitchen/bathroom/living area to myself. I think rent is usually more expensive especially in other areas, as is to be expected in a big city, which was why I looked to rent from places where people were living on a student budget.

I tended to not go out alone at night, but when I was working late I was fine talking the ~20 minute walk home from the Metra station. The Loop area is also so populated that you’d probably be fine walking around later, but it’s always good to stay on guard. I think if I had more familiarity with the area I would have been more confident walking around, but I had never been there before so I usually played it safe and tried not to stay out. I did actually go to a lot of plays so I was on public transit fairly late; I actually don’t think I took an Uber the entire time I was there. I rode the Metra and the El regularly and took the bus occasionally and didn’t find them hard to use at all. I needed to take the Metra to work so I bought a monthly pass (and two week passes for the partial month I worked); I would buy single rides on the El for the most part unless I had a day when I knew I would be riding a lot, in which case I did a day pass.

I basically only ate out on weekends, when I would spend the day in the city/surrounding area. I think prices are similar to NYC and maybe a little cheaper, though it depends on the neighborhood. I shopped exclusively at Aldi and the supermarket around the corner from where I lived (plus sometimes going to a nearby farmer’s market, where I would sometimes get vegetables/fruit), so I tried to save on my “normal” food. I ate a lot of ramen, rice, beans, and eggs, plus sandwiches for lunch. I definitely wanted to eat “Chicago” food like deep dish and hot dogs, so I made sure to budget time/money for that.

I spent a LOT of time reading, both at home and on my commute (I got through all of War & Peace, which was my big accomplishment). I lived super close to the beach, so I did sometimes go hang out at the beach either after work or on weekends. I did a lot of stuff, actually, and tried to plan my weekends around seeing as much of Chicago as possible. In addition to just walking around my neighborhood, I did the following things: walked to Evanson/Northwestern, walked around the UChicago campus (they have multiple free museums!), went to the free botanical garden in Glencoe, went to the free botanical garden in Garfield Park, went to the free botanical garden near the Lincoln Park Zoo, went to the Lincoln Park Zoo, went to the Art Institute (expensive but worth it), went to the city center museum (forget the name), went to a UCB show, went to an ImprovOlympic show, walked around the Cubs stadium and along the lake back to Rogers Park (too long; do not do this), walked around the mall, went to the DePaul modern art museum, went to a flea market, went to Millennium Park (and the Bean!), went to Navy Pier, saw plays at Steppenwolf/Chicago Shakespeare Company/a random storefront theater west of the city/elsewhere (definitely check Groupon for discounted tickets and many places also have a student discount), went to Chinatown, went to Wicker Park (next level hipster), went to Pilsen (which has a very cool and free museum of Mexican-American history), went to the Field Museum, went to the farmer’s market near me, watched the Pride parade in Boystown, went to a food festival in the Loop, went to a giant annual book fair, went to the movies (there was a really great small movie theater near where I lived), and really just walked around the city--I definitely discovered a lot of cool stuff and also bummed around a lot of Targets.

I had also wanted to go to more museums, but that added up really quickly; would highly recommend the Art Institute even though it costs $$$ because it has such an amazing collection of super-famous art and is huge. Even if you don’t like theater usually, Chicago has a HUGE theater scene and tickets can be very cheap, so you should try to see at least one show. Also it’s cool to go to places like UCB and IO; I am not usually a huge improv fan, but they’re really famous and definitely fun. Also of course the zoo, botanical gardens, and spending time on the lake are all free, as are a lot of the museums I mentioned.

Readers chime in though; I am not a Chicago native and honestly feel like I kind of took the “basic” route of entertaining myself in the city but those are some experiences I was able to have on the PICS stipend.

Chris Churchill Saves the World | It Was Good While It Lasted: Saying Farewell to the Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co

Anyone who knows me knows a few things about me. Comedy, music, birds, and trolleys. Three passions and a job. Of course, I haven’t driven a trolley in about six months. I’m a teacher now. The music is still in me and so is the comedy. Only now I use those tendencies as I make my documentaries for the MFA program in Documentary Media at Northwestern University where I am now a student. Spoiler: not too many funny documentarians out there. The birds are all day every day with me. If it’s not the friends I share my apartment with, it’s the pigeons, the sparrows, the hawks, and the mourning doves that get my attention any time they seem to be busy with something outside. It’s the trolley thing that has gone away.

And I don’t mean just for me. Just found out last night that the company that employed me as a trolley driver/tour guide for twenty-one years is going out of business, after more than a quarter century on December 31st. I assume at the stroke of midnight, so as my wife called to my attention, it might affect a few New Year’s Eve celebrations. Definitely, a lot of spring and summer weddings that will need to adjust their transportation plans.

Two things strike me about this sudden news that I just received. As I look back, I realize that though we told stories about Chicago to millions upon millions of visitors over those years, we actually became part of Chicago’s history as well. The other thing that I realized was that Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Company was murdered from within and without; a slow death of slow poison and a thousand tiny cuts that ended with a young pirate running their sword through a dying old man.

The company was created by three guys from LaGrange back in the early nineties. Tim Lattner (son of the Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Lattner), Rob Pierson, and Tim Carey. They built it from the ground up, just a few trolleys at first, and a few seasonal employees. They were up against Gray Line (a trolley tour company), American Sightseeing (a double decker company), and the Chicago Police, I’m sure, to find their niche in a crowded market and a spot on the sidewalk to sell tickets and pick up passengers. Believe it or not, this company existed for five years before they every hired me.

By the time I joined the company, it was established and on the verge of tearing down the competition. You don’t see too many Gray Line trolleys or American Sightseeing double deckers downtown anymore do you? While I’m sure there were other circumstances that helped it along, I’d like to say that, ultimately, we did that. We went out there and with superior tours, salespeople, hustle, and by outnumbering their vehicles, we became ubiquitous. We became the thing that was in a tourist’s mind when they thought, “I want to take one of those trolley tours in Chicago.”

And I can’t tell you how much I loved it and hated it over the years. How much I loved hustling for tips with sometimes corny, sometimes just bizarre trolley jokes. I can’t tell you how rewarding it was to eventually stop doing trolley jokes on my tour as I settled into my confidence as a tour guide. As I was just able to narrate the story of Chicago, as I saw it, to people who wanted to know. And the people I met and worked with over the last twenty-one years are among the most unique, talented, passionate, and fun loving people I’ve ever known.

As a performer, I’ve made good friends creating and performing comedy shows, rehearsing, writing, and producing stuff. When I was an active comedian, I made some good comedian friends. I make friends wherever I go. But these trolley people… these are the people I think of all the time. There are people I worked with who passed on long ago but who I think of all the time. There are people who were there before I got there and appear to be riding this last trolley into its last loop around downtown. And these people are my family outside of my family and my mobile home away from home.

“Twenty Years Without A Weekend”

So that pirate I talked about in the earlier metaphor—I saw them coming, and luckily for me, I was already on my way to another life when they showed up. The trolley company was purchased by, I guess you’d call them, a venture capitalist or maybe a turnaround artist. They don’t necessarily call themselves that. But when you look at the website for the company that just bought your parent company, you know. A bunch of young millionaire bios all over the About Us page. They were just doing a vague, big money, thing with no real mission other than making bigger money. Then, you add that the rest of their portfolio had absolutely nothing to do with transportation or tourism, the smell in the stockyards, where the trolleys are parked, became stronger than usual.

But this wasn’t the only corporate greed that killed us. Let’s not forget all the tiny cuts that left us vulnerable. When the company started, it was special, the owners had vision, the employees were on a mission. Then it got purchased by a transportation company and it slowly began to lose some of its focus. Little by little, the tour company became more of a transportation company. The trolleys were secondary to the larger corporation’s larger goal. That was what started it.

Then our success became a problem. Once we became the biggest game in town, we had to hire a lot of people, and quality control started to falter. It was no longer a small, focused crew. It was whomever could respond to our desperate cries for help in the Reader or hiring fairs we’d set up next to Second City.

Then, Megabus happened too. That discount bus company is owned by the same people who own Chicago Trolley & Double Decker. They share the lot with all the trolleys and double deckers. They also shared the attention and resources of the transportation company that, knowing or caring little about tours, was only skilled in the logistics of transportation but not of running a tour company.

So by a few years ago, the number of complaints about our tour grew. Check out our Yelp page. And we were too spread out as a company to do anything to affect a turnaround in the overall quality of our product. This isn’t to say that there weren’t a lot of great tour guides. There were always about ten really great ones, myself included. But when the ten great ones are outweighed, in the summer, by fifty poorly trained ones, well… you get the picture. I finally started telling tourists who rode with us in winter that they were getting the best tour because we only kept the good tour guides employed through the winter slow season.

That penultimate slash to our skins, cutting across the wrist but not yet the jugular, was a new kid in town named Big Bus. They came from out of town. They were built out of money. Built from the top down, rather than from the ground up. They came to town with one of their main goals to put Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Company out of business.

Doesn’t that sound familiar? That’s essentially what we accomplished with out rivals back in the day. What comes around goes around I guess. Big Bus will have its day in the sun and then the sun will set for them, too. This is not bitterness, just an observation of truth. Turn, turn, turn.

So I take a moment to think about how synonymous with Chicago tourism and just how special our company became during those years. We were part of the history of this town.

For many years, we were the Navy Pier Trolley. We were the city’s free trolley system that ran for a decade. We were the double deckers that carried the Chicago Blackhawks through Chicago after three separate Stanley Cup wins. And We were the company that carried the Cubs through the streets of Chicago and delivered them to the thirtieth largest gathering of humans in one place in the history of the world. Most of the gatherings ahead of that were religious pilgrimages. We were the trolleys on an evacuated Lake Shore Drive taking guests to and from the election night rally for Barack Obama in November 2008. That was us. That was history. We were a part of history.

I’m biased, of course. I’m also romanticizing a bit (it has been six months since I wore the khaki’s and red polo). But seriously, we were a great tour company for a long time—until we weren’t.
