All you need to know about Ghostly Experiences in London
Tumblr media
A city with as much history as London must have a fair few ghosts haunting its streets, right?
Well, it turns out that it’s not just the streets that are supposedly haunted, but also some of London’s stations, buildings, and other locations throughout the city. In this blog, we’re taking a step away from the comfort and warm welcome of the Bayswater Inn Hotel Hyde Park, sharing a few of the most haunted sites in London and how you can get involved in visiting.
Highgate Cemetery
What better place to start a ghost tour of London than at a cemetery, with this particular site located to the north of London, having opened back in 1839. The cemetery, which has been used in a number of television shows and movies, fell into disrepair in the 1960s and so has become an abandoned cemetery with a fair few stories surrounding its graves. One story involves a vampire that rests in Highgate, another concerns the ghost of an old lady who roams around looking for her murdered children.
Just watch out she doesn’t follow you back to your accommodation in Bayswater London…
Tower of London
An attraction with a gory history, the Tower of London is largely recognised as the most haunted site in the whole of London owing to the murders, battles, beheadings, and tortures which took place within its multitude of walls and grounds.
Despite now being a popular tourist attraction, which is surrounded by discount hotels and London’s most memorable visitor experiences, it is said that Anne Boleyn’s ghost remains present around the White Tower, and that the two murdered princes remain trapped in the walls where their skeletons were eventually found after their untimely death.
Ten Bells Pub
This may not have the class and grandeur of the top restaurants near Bayswater, but it certainly has a story to tell – with the Ten Bells Pub not just one of the oldest but also one of the most haunted pubs in London.
The pub is particularly famous for its links with Jack the Ripper, who picked up more than a few of his victims after they stumbled away from an evening of drinking in the pub. Their bodies were never found too far from the pub, leading people to believe that perhaps the killer himself with a regular.
Westminster Abbey
It seems off to throw such an iconic site of celebration into an article about haunting and ghosts; however, we cannot ignore the history that connects the abbey with the dead. Westminster Abbey is the final resting place for a number of royals and other noteworthy people, some of whom visitors claim to have seen moving about the grounds at a glance.
Perhaps not as sinister as some of the aforementioned ghostly experiences and attractions, Westminster Abbey deserves its place on our list if only for the number of well known individuals who call it their forever home.
Have you visited any of these haunted and ghostly sites? If so, did you experience any ‘out of this world’ encounters or visions?

The best Christmas markets in London: 2022 edition
Tumblr media
Every year brings a new influx of festive events, attractions, and things to do in and around the city of London. And while some features return year after year, including the garlands of lights and decorations which adorn the businesses and hotels near Bayswater tube station and across London, others are temporary fixtures which change year after year.
In this article, we’re focussing exclusively on the best Christmas markets from 2022 – starting with the most famous of all.
Winter Wonderland
Located just minutes from the J Hyde Park London, Winter Wonderland takes over a large portion of Hyde Park during the festive period – uniting fairground rides with food stands, market stalls, and all manner of attractions for visitors of all ages.
A vibrant and exceptionally popular staple in London during the winter and Christmas season, Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland can be accessed by ticket only and offers a busy but exciting day or night out.
Southbank Centre
Heading south and leaving behind the hotels in Bayswater London in favour of the sparkling river Thames, you will find the Southbank Centre – and more importantly, its festive Christmas market. With little wooden chalet buildings full of food and stocking fillers, this is a great spot to head as part of your Christmas shopping or for a little treat night with friends or loved ones.
One of the best things about this particular Christmas market is its proximity and access to the river, lined with the Christmas lights and festive decorations from surrounding office blocks, businesses, and London attractions.
Covent Garden
A great place to visit all year round, owing to its authentic and traditional architecture, the street performers, and the plethora of food and independent businesses, Covent Garden is a vibrant and popular place for tourists and locals alike. But come the festive season, Covent Garden comes into its own – often hosting a pop—up or two from major businesses or corporations, giving out tasters and freebies to the crowds of visitors, and hosting an exciting winter warmer festival complete with photo opportunities and bars.
Leicester Square
Just minutes from the discount hotels of Bayswater and central London, Leicester Square is so much more than just a through-route or passing place on your way to Westminster or the Strand. Leicester Square’s Christmas market is held from November through to January and again plays host to a number of ornate wooden chalets which transform the square into something from a festive movie.
Best of all, Leicester Square is not only ideally located for visitors from all across London, but it is also home to a number of family friendly enterprises and displays – including the vast Lego store, M&M World, the famous Odeon cinema which hosts premieres, and a number of statues of famous movie characters and figures.
All of these Christmas markets run over the festive season in London, and transform the city into a winter wonderland for both adults and children to enjoy.

Rainbow Precinct welcomes Sydney Pride Month

Rainbow Precinct welcomes Sydney Pride Month
Tumblr media
Sydney Pride Month is set to shine all over Sydney’s Rainbow Precinct in 2024.
WORDS Lorraine Lock
June is Pride Month in Sydney and with over a hundred events to choose from, it’s a jam packed calendar, so shrug off those winter blues and get ready to party for pride!
Most Sydney Pride Month events are in Eastside Sydney with Rainbow Precinct and Oxford Street leading the way in putting on the glitz, glamour and greasepaint.
Just east of the CBD and a short stroll across Hyde Park, this area thrums with life when Pride comes to town.
Venues like Claire’s Kitchen, Darlinghurst Theatre Company and the new Loading Dock Theatre at Qtopia will be hosting cabaret and live theatre performances, including comedy, monologues, informative conversations and history panels in what is fast becoming the new theatre district of Sydney in Darlinghurst.
The Oxford Art Factory and Soda Factory are venues with live music programming, drinks and a lively crowd, open till the early hours and with big nights planned over the King’s Birthday long weekend.
Stonewall is hosting the Sydney Pride launch night tonight and many other events over the month – appropriate given the namesake of the Hotel and the history of the Stonewall Riots.
There’s a show [Orgy of Drag] to commemorate those trailblazers who have gone before and Stonewall’s usual weekly programming has been vamped up to include “pride editions” of Malebox, Trivia and Trans Glamoré.
Courage & Compassion
This year’s Sydney Pride Month theme is “Courage & Compassion” and, above all, this festival is community oriented and welcoming, with plenty of charity fundraisers in the mix.
If your legs are up to it you could join the ‘Sydney Frontrunners 5k Walk and Run’ around the park or just front up at Kinselas and have some ‘Beers 4 Bobby’ (Goldsmith Foundation) on Tuesday 18th June.
History buffs can join Sydney’s veteran drag queen, Wonder Mama for a tour of the Rainbow Precinct, with some anecdotes and discount shopping along the way. Wonder Mama (a published author) is also teaching Nude Life Drawing Class at Universal.
The Bookshop Darlinghurst is also hosting a Life Drawing Class, so if you’re ready to unleash your inner Van Gough, now is the time!
Still on the art theme – Tap Gallery is calling for entrants to this year’s Pride Art Prize, so go ahead and put those art classes to use.
There are trivia nights each week at Surly’s American Tavern dive bar, with the sensational Breko; and at Burdekin ThursGays with ‘Kevin in the City’- both funny and informative hosts who will keep you and your team entertained and on your toes! Turbo Trivia with Charisma Belle at Stonewall also has meal deals and shows throughout the night.
Of course there’s Drag entertainment to be had every night of the week along the Oxford Street strip including at The Oxford, Stonewall and Universal.
The Burdekin has ‘Spritz or Swallow’ drag brunch on the rooftop, each Sunday with Mynx Moscato.
The Beresford has a big long weekend planned and at Universal they’re getting ready to announce the next ‘Miss Universal’ with a $5000 cheque to go along with that crown!
There’s plenty of other entertainment on offer with something for everyone, including Dog Haus Pup Pride, Poof Doof’s Reminisce Gay Anthems night, and a special Pride George Michael edition of music bingo.
If Taylor Swift is your vibe, get along to the special BIngay fundraiser for ACON.
Junipero’s world of immersive dance floors for lesbians, queer women, trans and non-binary people is making an appearance at the Burdekin.
June long weekend
The long weekend is shaping up to be exciting with ‘Thick’N’Juicy at Oxford Arts Factory and CHAPS at Stonewall – sounds like a good opportunity to break out the leather, rubber, denim and chaps – all are welcome!
Pride Month events make an appearance all over Sydney and as far as the Blue Mountains, but if you’re looking for a one stop adventure destination, you can’t go past Darlinghurst’s Oxford Street and the Rainbow Precinct… It’s the cultural heart of our LGBTQIA+ community and a place to party, make new friends and explore.
With something on every single day in June it’s so easy to fill up the calendar, or you could just head to Taylor Square, pick a beer-garden or rooftop and prepare to watch the world strut by!

Unusual things to do in London
Tumblr media
Home to film sets and green spaces, royal palaces, endless bars and night clubs, and a mix of some of Britain’s most modern and innovative structures alongside architecture from throughout history, you will find that virtually every London city guide is packed full of exciting things to do and see.
In this article, we’re focussing specifically on the weird and wonderful, introducing you to some of the more unusual things to really make the most of your 2 night stay in London, with deals, discounts, and inspiration aplenty.
First up, to the river Thames itself – a landmark that flows through London and forms a core part of the city skyline.
Enjoy a unique cruise down the river Thames
Yes, there are a variety of different cruises and ways of enjoying the river Thames, from party boats to afternoon tea vessels, small speed boats and grander, more elaborate day cruise experiences. But did you know that you can also hire a floating hot tub and make your way along the river from the comfort of your very own party-inspired hot tub? Perfect for hen parties, stag dos, and those visitors who want to embrace and weirdest parts of life in London, these hot tubs allow drinks, small gatherings, and all the games and people spotting you can do from the confines of your tub.
TV games brought to life
If you don’t already know about London’s affinity for escape rooms – where have you been? A great way to build bonds and test ties with your friends and family, a real escape room experience sees groups shut in a space that they must work their way out of by solving various clues, with a new escape room popping up on a near weekly basis.
However, if you are staying centrally at the Signature Townhouse London Hyde Park or a similarly central hotel, there are other lifesize games that you can experience and enjoy – namely the Crystal Maze which is an exciting new experience available in London.
Enjoy the Royal Parks on horseback
Did you know that you can ride through Hyde Park in London on horseback? As long as you do, of course, use one of the vetted and approved horses from the Connaught Village stables, then this experience is very much available to riders of all abilities.
And if horseback isn’t your thing, why not experience Regents Park by bike, or head to Green Park and wander down to the Mall.
Up at the O2
This particular experience over in East London combines everything that many tourists are looking for – with excellent city views, a memorable experience, a great photo opportunity, and of course something different and unique to tell friends and family about. Clip into the bridge that takes you up and over the O2 exterior, and enjoy a daylight or twilight walk with a stop at the top to take in the view.
All of this and more is available during your next trip to London.

A Guide to London Buses for First-Time Visitors
Tumblr media
The thing about London's public transport is it works. As one of the world's most intricate public transportation systems, it's no surprise several countries have adopted systems like the London Underground. However, there is more to London commute than the tube. One of the other ways to explore London is by travelling by bus. Here is a guide to London buses for first-time visitors.
About
There is no better way to explore London than on the iconic double-decker buses. Your commute will explore top attractions, passing cool places to see in London along the way. Bus routes run throughout London 24 hours a day.
Stopping a bus
Buses usually stop only at designated bus stops in London. Requests for stops between bus stops are not honoured.
Notify the driver to let you off at the next stop by pressing a red button on the upright metal posts throughout the bus. A bell and a lit sign that says "bus stopping" will also likely be visible at the front of the bus.
Outer London bus routes have no fixed stops on some routes, so they are operated as hail-and-ride services. When the bus is in a "hail and ride" area, you can press the red button to signal the driver and get off at any safe location.
Planning your trip
Several London bus routes run 24 hours a day. You can find 24-hour buses on some London routes and look for buses marked with an "N" in front of their numbers - these buses cover the time between the tube closing time and the start of daytime bus services in London. In addition, most park grand hotels London are located within walking distance of a tube or bus station, making it easy for first-time visitors to access public transport.
Check the information boards at any bus stop or Trafalgar Square (the hub for night buses) if you are still getting familiar with the routes.
Travel information is available from the TfL Visitor Centre or online by browsing the London bus maps section. In addition, the Journey Planner from Transport for London lets you plan your bus route online.
Paying for your trip
It's easy to pay your London bus fare. Show the bus driver your paper Travelcard or Oyster card at the yellow card reader after you board. Ensure that only one card is touched on the yellow reader at a time to avoid clashes. If your Visitor Oyster card or Oyster card needs more credit, you can travel on a bus one more time before having to top it up. Arranging and topping up your travel Oyster Card ahead of your arrival is recommended for those travelling to London for the first time. Alternatively, please speak to the hotel staff at any hyde park hotel. They will gladly provide you with information on top-up points.
Fare Concessions
London offers several ways to save on bus and tram travel. A free ride is available for children under 11, and discounts are available for students and concession holders.

Essential London Travel Tips
Tumblr media
Travelling to London is an exciting time – even the planning process is thrilling! Get ahead of the game with the following travel tips for London. These will ensure that your stay at The Montcalm At The Brewery London City goes stress-free!
Visit the museums for free
One of the best things about London is that it is free to visit the permanent galleries of most of the museums. The institutions around South Kensington are iconic but remember to check out the museums further east as well. The Museum of London, the Imperial War Museum, and the National Maritime Museum are also free and fabulous.
Book ahead
If you have your heart set on a specific exhibition, West End restaurant, or a theatre show, do book ahead. Tickets and seats are often reserved weeks or even months in advance – especially during the peak summer months and around Christmas and Easter.
Ride the bus
The public bus is a cheap and exciting way to get around London. As well as getting you from A to B, the bus gives you the opportunity to actually see the sights! Scenic bus routes take you over the likes of Tower Bridge, through Trafalgar Square, and past Westminster Abbey. Rides are capped at £1.55 per journey, regardless of the time of day you travel.
Greenery is everywhere
London is known for its palaces, department stores, and skyscrapers. However, the city has an abundance of greenery that may shock you! Look beyond the classics of Hyde Park and Regent’s Park. Explore the wilderness of Hampstead Heath or find your favourite little square. The Montcalm London is located around the corner from the Barbican Conservatory – a glass menagerie of tropical flora and plantlife. It’s perfect for colder days in the city.
Pack your cycling helmet
You might want to hire a bicycle while in London. This is a fun, cheap, and healthy way to explore. Most of the city is equipped with cycle highways while the parks offer a safe cycling environment. Hotels such as The Montcalm At The Brewery London City are conveniently located for renting a pair of wheels via the Santander Cycles scheme. However, we would encourage you to pack a cycling helmet and familiarise yourself with local road rules before getting around by bike.
Card is key
Credit and debit cards are essential while staying in London. Whether you want to order a pint, dine at a West End restaurant or use public transport – you will need to flash plastic to pay. Many eateries, bars, and attractions have ceased to accept cash. Contactless cards are particularly handy for using public transport in place of an Oyster card.
Loyalty pays
Once you discover your favourite hotels, restaurants, and parks in the city you will probably want to return again and again. Enrolling in a hotel loyalty scheme such as that offered by The Montcalm London is a perfect way to shave some pennies off your next stay. It’s free to sign up and then you can reap perks that include loyalty points, exclusive discounts, and package deals.

A Guide to Experiencing All of London in One Week
Tumblr media
When planning a city break, a week can feel like a long time – that is, until you start listing all the attractions that you want to visit and the things you want to see and do. Combining history with experience, and boasting immersive family attractions within walking distance of some of the best accommodation in Bayswater, London is a city where a week can pass in a flash.
That’s why creating an itinerary and coming up with a plan to schedule your time is crucial – with this blog introducing not only the best things to do but also where to eat, sleep, and enjoy morning and evening walks.
Days 1 & 2
Having just arrived at your hotel in London, the first couple of days are about acclimatising yourself to your surroundings – identifying the best cafes and coffee shops, exploring the city on foot, and indulging in some local delicacies from Borough Market and the many street food vans and boutique eateries.
Your first evening in London is one we recommend spending high in the sky, with a booking at the Sky Garden or tickets to the London Eye.
Days 3 & 4
Following a couple of days in the city of London, experiencing all the attractions within walking distance of your discount hotel in London, Days 3 & 4 are largely focussed on the attractions outside of the city. Windsor Castle is one such attraction which is highly worth a visit, not least because it was the favoured residence of the Queen but because as an attraction and town to visit, Windsor offers a lovely blend of culture and outside and natural spaces.
The other thing to add to your list for experiences outside of the city centre is the Harry Potter Studios tour in Watford – perfect for families, and worthy of a full day out which can be accessed via car, train, or coach.
Days 5 & 6
Back to central London for days 5 & 6, and this is when we recommend booking tables at some of the best restaurants near Bayswater and ensuring that you get tickets to at least one West End show.
The Tower of London is located close enough to the West End that you can head straight to your chosen show from an afternoon tour at the tower, or why not keep it light-hearted with a self-guided tour of your choice of museum or gallery.
Day 7
The final day of your London experience is all about soaking up those last few traditional and classic British experiences and viewpoints – with our advice being to find a high end afternoon tea to really send you home with a full belly and great memories of your time in the city.
The Bayswater Inn Hotel Hyde Park is located close to a number of hotels and restaurants which serve aesthetically pleasing and delicious afternoon teas to diners, making this a great way to soften the blow of checkout and leave you with one final treat to enjoy.

A Religious Tour of London
Tumblr media
Whether you class yourself as religious or not, taking a tour of some of London’s most iconic ancient and religious buildings and destinations is both interesting and eye-opening. After all, in a city as diverse as London, the presence of so many different religions makes for a very interesting day trip.
Starting at your Premier Club Rewards London hotel, here is a whistlestop tour of London through the eyes of religion and ancient tradition.
Whistlestop Tour of London’s Religious and Ancient Destinations
A few minutes by car or tube from the Grand Royale London Hyde Park Reward hotel, St Paul’s Cathedral provides insight into old London - designed to celebrate impressive traditional architecture, with the second largest dome in the world. This cathedral is not only stunning to look at but is important as a church and site of religion in the city of London - having held a multitude of royal services throughout the years.
Moving further West, sitting south of the Paddington Court Rooms hotel, lies Guildhall - a grand building which hosts international state visits and is considered the grandmother of all Parliaments.
Another ancient destination of note is London’s Roman Amphitheatre which, like The Globe theatre which stills stands on the Southbank, connects modern London with its ancient theatrical counterpart. Though the Roman amphitheatre is now the site of the famous Guildhall, it was once an arena for entertainment and performance, with an immersive experience being build and engineered to take tourists back in time and let them see how the space was used in the past.
Want to Learn More about the History of London?
From ancient religious sites to some of the most notable historic discoveries in the city, one of the best ways to learn and see more about the history of London is to visit one of the many museums and galleries in the city. The British museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery are all excellent examples of popular and interesting places which you can visit to learn more about times gone by in and around London.
Alternatively, book yourself onto a historical tour of London and see some of the best sites and attractions for yourself. No matter which of our Premier Club Rewards London Hotels you choose to stay in, everywhere in London is well connected by underground or by taxi, or even on foot, so getting around and between different locations is super easy.
How to Make the Most of Your Trip to London
When you join our Premier Hotel Membership program, you will benefit from a vast array of offers and discounts, depending on which of our eligible hotels you choose to stay in.
Whether you’re interested in the religious background of London and its citizens, or simply want to lose yourself in the impressive nature of some of London’s ancient architecture, look for ways of integrating architectural and historical appreciation into each day of your trip. You won’t regret it!
