Study & Theories for the Finnari
Hello once again dear readers. For those of you who haven’t heard of @starr-fall-knight-rise I suggest visiting them and reading their stories, as they are some of my favorites and they form the basis of this post here. 
I was very pleased with how well received my last post like this was, in which I covered the known facts for the appearance of an alien species of starr-fall’s (the Gnar’lak), as well as provided my own theories and speculations regarding what I thought their appearance might be. Today I will be doing the same but for the species named “the Finnari”.
This is a species that I’ve been interested in for a while now as they are described as seeing in infrared (seeing heat) and that in the written universe of starr-fall-knight-rise they are one of three alien species that enter into interspecies relationships with humans (something that intrigues my romantic tendencies). 
I had initially intended to do this species before the Gnar’lak, but then realized that it would provide some necessary details do to the Gnar’lak first as that species would’ve had a large impact on the Finnari (for more details on how please read starr-fall’s stories).
Same as last time I will start by providing the confirmed facts about their physical appearance provided by starr-fall’s stories & answered questions, then I shall list what we can infer based on those facts & other details, and finally wrap up with my own theories that seem the most plausible.
Before I start here are some disclaimers: First: I want to give thanks to starr-fall-knight-rise for allowing me to do this and for receiving my last post positively, I in no way own the Finnari or make any claim to doing so & am doing this simply because I love starr-fall’s stories & want to contribute in some way to the fandom. Secondly: I am by no means a biologist & most of my research comes from the internet, if I am wrong please do not bash me hard and simply provide clarification in the comments. Thirdly: I will use reference images to help describe my thinking and theories, I in no way own or take credit for these images.
The Confirmed Appearance Details
In this area there is not much to go on, no true concrete facts like with the Gnar’lak, the most obvious will still need clarification in the next section, but I will give them here to start you off with a vague idea of the appearance.
“The radio signal intercepted him on his posterior receptors, & he turned to face the speaker.”
“-lowered his third limb from his infrared receptors.”
“-smiled at the little Finnari.” 
The Inferred Appearance Details
“-rate each species from weakest to strongest”... “Vrul/Gibb, Bran, Finnari, Iotans, Teraski,-” = Taking this in combination with their stated small size (described in context with a human) I would say we can infer that they don’t have any exceptional musculature. 
“a prey species” = With this I think it’s a fair bet too infer that they do not have the typical predator characteristics such as large fangs, claws, etc.
“-different races rank in terms of instantaneous speed?”... “Humans can outpace everyone else”... “Teraski, Vrul, Celzex, & Finnari have no chance.” = In combination in their size this can infer that they have no specialized running muscles or traits such as digitigrade legs & the like.
“-back in the old days when they weren’t at war with each other the Gnar’lak kept Finnari on farms.” = With this we can infer that the Finnari might give birth to multiple young as this is a typical trait of a species that is farmed like livestock. Taking into consideration that this is a species that garner the attraction of humans I’d say we can infer that they also follow the trend of the Drev & the Teraski and give birth to live young.
“How many rounds it takes to kill-”...”a 22 round” = With this we can infer that they likely do not have tough skin, shells, or shock absorption, and may even have softer bones than humans. 
“Which species use farming-” ... “The Finnari” = From this we can infer that they have prehensile limbs and appendages for manipulating tools & picking crops, and thus are likely herbivores with the mouths for such.
“Infrared and thermal sensors within his eyes ” = This is one that I will go into more in the section for theories, but the basic thing we can infer from this is that the Finnari likely cold-blooded, because if they were mammals or avians they would likely blind themselves by looking at each other.
“interstellar communication tower” ... “Finnari rocket technology” = This is another detail we can use to infer that the Finnari have appendages with the dexterity for manipulating tools.
“-the humans themselves were beacons of radiance allowing heat to pour off their skin & into the atmosphere. It was a wonder they could keep themselves running at all losing as much energy as they were.” = This is another detail that leads into inferring that they are cold-blooded and might also be another reason they are likely to get into relationships with humans.
“-the creature gave a confused look” = this is a detail that infers expressive facial features that humans might be able to recognize, such as brows or the wrinkling of a nose.
“The Finnari whistled amused” = Whistling is a sound made by the puckering of lips or positioning of the tongue along teeth, or in the throat among animals, so we can infer that there is a possibility that they have lips.
“nodded & scurried off” = This detail is a little more vague, but generally the motion of “scurrying” brings to mind a creature moving quickly on all fours such as a mouse or other small animal, even though the actual definition does not include that. I’ll go more on that in the theory section.
Those are the main items I intended to cover in the Inferred section but now I’ll also cover the items from the Confirmed section to give an idea of what they imply.
“The radio signal intercepted him on his posterior receptors, & he turned to face the speaker.” = This is a complex one, as radio signals are a technological term that would imply that the Finnari have a form of biological “walkie-talkie” for communication through “prosterior” receptors that would be sensory organs that face backwards. Given the amount of interference that might come with this when around technology that gives out and receives radio signals, particularly human technology, I think the more likely thing this infers is a piece of equipment the Finnari was wearing but I will cover this again in the Theory section.
“-lowered his third limb from his infrared receptors.” = With this we can infer that the Finnari likely have more than two arms or possibly a long prehensile tail that can reach and cover their eyes. I’ll go more on this in the Theory section.
“-smiled at the little Finnari.” = This is actually possibly the most concrete bit of physical description we have for the Finnari as it is from an adult human male to an adult female Finnari, inferring a height disparity that puts the Finnari as being noticeable smaller than humans.
Theorized Appearance Details
To start this section off let’s look back on two details from before about the Finnari, them being cold-blooded and being prey species, for which I would likely theorize that they are lizard-like reptilians for the following reasons:
Animals that fall under the “cold-blooded” attribute include: Reptiles (snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, alligators, crocodiles, etc.), some insects, amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders, etc.), & fish.
We can rule out the Finnari being insects due to the fact that humans would need to find them attractive.
We have no indication that Finnari require water or inhabit water so we can rule out them being fish.
Having tough skin or hard shells would’ve interfered with the Gnar’lak feeding on the Finnari so it makes sense they wouldn’t resemble turtles or tortoises.
Factoring in that they are a prey species and thus likely herbivorous it’d make sense for them to be reptiles as multiple reptiles are herbivores while amphibians are generally carnivores or omnivores. 
Referring back to earlier about the size of the Finnari I’ll say that is another trait that would pair well with being cold-blooded, as larger creatures require more body heat. However regarding specifics I’d imagine them being somewhere between 2ft.-4ft in height, small by human standards but not so small that being in a relationship with a human or being fed on by the Gnar’lak would be impractical.
To add on some attributes for being cold-blooded let’s talk about ways the Finnari could absorb heat. Being lizard-like reptiles they could warm themselves using insolation (the absorption of the sun's rays ) and conduction (absorbing heat from the ground or other hot surface), though I think the later has it’s disadvantages and is unlikely as the Finnari are at least bipedal and thus wouldn’t be able to warm themselves properly without lying down. With the first option however the proper technology can be used to replicate the warming effects of the sun’s rays. 
This can factor into appearance traits as they could use a technique similar to the frilled-neck lizard (see image below) who use impressive frills to create more surface area to absorb heat and helps to keep warm.

For the Finnari a theory and adaption of this trait could be that they use frills on their backs to absorb heat adequately in a manner similar to below:

Another alternative is that they could do what  some lizards have done and adapt to be able to change color, turning darker colors to absorb heat better and turning lighter colors to cool down.

Moving on to more obvious physical traits let’s go over the options for the “third limb”, which as stated before could mean either multiple arms or a prehensile tail. To cover the simpler option, a prehensile tail with a fan-like frill (see images below) could work properly in the context of shielding eyes, while also tying into the above discussion with an additional frill for absorbing heat.

The other option is having multiple arms, for which I’d theorize as having four to avoid having too many limbs while also keeping the number even and the physical layout symmetrical, which is another trait humans typically consider attractive. For this there are many options for the positioning of the arms but I’d like to tie it in with a topic I touched on briefly in the Inferred section regarding the “scurrying” motion and how it often evokes an image of a creature running on all fours. 
When thinking of this I theorized that the Finnari could be a variant form of facultative biped, which is a creature that is capable of walking or running on two legs in spite of normally walking or running on four limbs or more, albeit only for a limited periods of time, with the variant being that they do so in the reverse if possible of normally being on two legs and running on four or more limbs. And when thinking of the body structure that could facilitate such a thing with the possibility of four arms taken into consideration I happened upon a creature from the Star Wars: Clone Wars series called the momong (see images below) that seemed to have the perfect body structure to use as reference, though with possible longer legs even if the short legs would tie into the lack of running speed.

For the head and mouth structure I’d theorize that it’d resemble something like an iguana, chuckwalla, or uromastyx (images in respective order below) as those the most common herbivorous lizards, and a snout-like head that positions the eyes on the sides is a common trait of a prey species. We should also remember from the Inferred section that they might have lips for whistling and muscles in the brow and nose with more range of expressive motion than human lizards.

Now let’s discuss the Finnari’s most notable feature, which is their infrared vision. While one might think that this would equal an easy to determine physical feature of having eyes similar in appearance to a snake’s, research actually proves that wrong. Stated before in the Inferred section with the “Infrared and thermal sensors in his eyes”, this is different from snakes who have holes on their faces called pit organs, which contain a membrane that can detect infrared radiation from warm bodies:

Of the cold-blooded animals that see infrared the most notable one that actually uses its eyes to do so is the bullfrog. So the Finnari might actually have an eye appearance like so:

And finally I’ll wrap up with the most difficult trait to research and come up with a proper theory for, which is the posterior receptors for radio signals. As stated having this would be a rear-facing or back-mounted sensory organ that would function as a biological “walkie-talkie”, which would definitely pick up a lot of interference around technology that utilizes radio signals/waves, like another form of hearing that receives constant noise, and thus would be impractical, and there is no example of an animal using this on Earth. While one can take some artistic liberty for it & say the Finnari possess such a sensory organ there is no accurate example that I would feel alright providing. For my theories I’ll simply think that these radio receptors are a form of technology rather than biology. 
I apologize for taking so long to post this collection of studies and theories and hope that it is informative and close to the mark of what starr-fall imagined. I honestly don’t know which species I’ll do next though I have considered doing the Tvek. If any readers have tips on where they think I could improve in my writing please comment.

ESPORTS - AN ANALYSIS ON THE GRAND FINALS MATCH OF THE MLBB (MOBILE LEGENDS: BANG BANG) M2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: BREN ESPORTS VS. BURMESE GHOULS (PHILIPPINES VS. MYANMAR)

Background Information:
Just recently, I’ve spectated an online international tournament of the game “Mobile Legends: Bang Bang”. In particular, this is already the grand finals round or the last match of the M2 World Championship: between Bren Esports from the Philippines and Burmese Ghouls from Myanmar. Considered as the initial favorites of the tournament are the Bren Esports matched against the Burmese Ghouls, or the team considered as the underdogs. In this match specifically: it was planned to be best-of-7 games.
Fighting for the team of Bren Esports are the following members:
1.  FLAPTZY
2.  LUSTY.
3.  PHEWW
4.  KARLTZY
5.  RIBO
Meanwhile, these are the contenders coming from Burmese Ghouls:
1.  RUBY DD
2.  MAYBE
3.  KID
4.  ACE
5.  DEE
Court Dimensions: 
In playing Mobile Legends, a map serves as the court or a battlefield where the gameplay or battle occurs. Though a map in the game depends on the game mode, for competitions like this; a Classic Map is utilized. In a Classic Map, there are three lanes: Top Lane, Middle Lane, and Bottom Lane. All three lanes have three turrets defending the base turret. In the map as well, belongs jungle areas in between the lanes; these are used to easily move through the map and farm (way of gaining gold or experience) since certain monsters spawn there. Other than the monsters belonging in the jungle areas, there are also monsters in the middle part of the map: the Turtle (gives off extra gold) and the Blue Knight or Lord (aids in pushing a lane after defeat); which are killed for the benefits they offer to the team. Once again, there are two bases that the towers are defending. In a base, belongs a spawning area which is where the players initially spawn at the start of a match, where they spawn again after dying during the game, and where players recall to heal up. 
Equipment: 
• A phone that is/has: 
➤ equipped with at least 1 GB of RAM onboard
➤ a Quad-Core processor
• Headphones
• Team Uniform 
Basic Skills: 
For a team to win successfully, before anything else they need to have good teamwork which could be started by a team having a good variation of hero roles (assigned to a respective lane; each role should be properly understood for a team to wisely curate their choices). Other basic skills involved as well in basic gameplay are: wisely choosing and purchasing fitting items for the chosen hero whilst continuously killing creeps or farming to gain the needed XP for a level-up and to purchase high-tier equipment. Moreover, it could also simply include properly fending off one’s base against the enemy team whilst also penetrating the enemy’s main base to secure victory. 
Rules of the Game:
As for a basic explanation of how the game works; the game “Mobile Legends: Bang Bang” is a multiplayer online battle (MOBA) game in which requires 2 teams of 5 players each. An important thing to consider while in-game is teamwork; how the team uses the map and skill combinations to their advantage. The main goal is to: destroy the enemy crystal which’s located at the enemy bases’ core (while defending own); but in order to reach this, a team needs to destroy all the turrets of the enemy’s side (third, second, and first-tier turrets).
How to Officiate:
• An official should ensure/know that:
➤ a team should consist of only 5 members, 1-2 reserved players (optional), & 1 coach (optional); and that once nominated or registered, he/she cannot be replaced throughout the entirety of the match.
➤ Players of both teams should compete with/and demonstrate good sportsmanship. They should avoid vulgar words, taunting, and spamming.
➤ Any form of cheating, be it a successful attempt or not, is qualified as a violation.
➤ END OF MATCH: Whoever destroys the opposing team’s base wins. 
➤ GAME MODE: Tournament Mode 
➤ In case of a server crash, the game can be continued using a new draft (but involves the same line-up)
Technical & Tactical Skills During Gameplay (7 Games):
First Game:
a)  Drafting Picks:

b)  Game Flow:
As the first game started, expectations were already set for the Burmese Ghouls as they’re known to be usually strong off during the early game period; they did not disappoint as they immediately got first blood and secured the turtle.
For Bren Esports, they did well with their pushing/map control. With, KARLTZY (Claude), he had a good strategy with his farming. Moving on, as the opposing team had the lead; they eventually caught up and even got ahead since they focused on quality pushing, farming, and rotations. As the final clash began, the team focused on destroying turrets and controlling the jungle; consequently, finishing off the base turret (winning the 1st game; scoring: 1-0).
As for Burmese Ghouls, again, they were initially leading the game since they started off strong; but situations worsened. Blamed, could be due to the hero choices as they had none who could lock down the swift heroes of Bren Esports. For another contributor to their loss, it could be with ACE (Yi Sun-Shin). As the hero was already strong on its own, it wasn’t utilized properly (YSS’ passive); not activating the hero’s full potential made the team be at a disadvantage.
Second Game:

b)  Game Flow:
Bren Esports shifted the tides as they had the winning momentum early game, which should’ve been the condition for the Burmese Ghouls. In particular, they were more extreme early game; but still having strong positionings, whilst getting kills here and there. It could be seen how good their strategy was in the 2nd game, as they got a lead of 6-0, as Burmese Ghouls had awkward positioning throughout the clashes. Moreover, the team of Bren Esports was good at switching lanes, being a good factor in this game. Now, 8 minutes within the game, they easily pushed through having a score of 16-1, with Bren Esports being at a 15-kill lead.
Now for Burmese Ghouls, as they were having a hard start for the 2nd game, they still ultimately have what it takes to get back up in the late game, but they really need to chill down and take things one step at a time. The team formulated a split push as their procedures for getting back up, but things got too worse for them that it was now uncontested for their team. As the end of the game approached close, the team’s middle lane towers went down, and eventually, they only had two towers left to destroy; proving how Bren has got the win in the bag. 11 minutes in, all towers of the team were destroyed by the opposing team. In the end, as some of the members died making them unable to properly defend; Bren Esports quickly destroyed the base turret and got the win for the 2nd game (scoring: 2-0).
Third Game:

b)  Game Flow:
For the third game, Burmese Ghouls had a good line-up. As for their early game status: they got the lead, as they showed their aggressiveness proving their good early-game flow again. As the game progressed, it can be said how if they manage to get the 1st and 2nd lords, they have a good chance of winning the 3rd game. They eventually broke through the turrets of the opposing team (they knew their momentum and took advantage). Ultimately, they got ahead with the destroyed turrets all throughout as they prioritized pushing. Now, 11 minutes in, all turrets of the other team were destroyed. Almost finishing the game, the team just focused straight on the base turret for victory (though it wasn’t exactly a quick process as Bren Esports successfully defended at one point).
Now, for Bren Esports: they managed at first, but things went bad for them. Though they also know their winning conditions, they didn’t utilize their capabilities. 8 minutes in the game, and they still haven’t destroyed a turret. Then, in clashes, they mostly were at a disadvantage, as to why they didn’t succeed in one clash. As the time for defending came; again, they succeeded at one point, but Burmese Ghouls still won in the end (scoring: 2-1).
Fourth Game:
a)  Drafting Picks:

b)  Game Flow:
For the fourth game, Bren Esports had a good early game rotation; accompanied by a good play style. The team matched the aggression by the opposing team. As for clashes, they did good, gaining many kills on the other team. But, as for pushing, they need to focus more on that as to beat the lead by Burmese Ghouls. 6 minutes in, both teams have an equal number of destroyed turrets; but whilst considering that, Bren Esports still need to apply more pressure, and they ultimately did as they got the lead (kill, score, & gold-wise). Digging deeper, the members of the team really had good chemistry and skill combinations. Though having a slight drawback at one point, they fought back wisely and still prioritized pushing.
Being a start in the shift of game conditions, the Lord went to the opposing team making the lead a huge amount; it made Burmese Ghouls now be at a huge advantage. Though the opposing team had a risky line-up, they still successfully accomplished their objectives (with DEE (Claude) quickly clearing jungles and racking up gold; whilst having good map control). Also, because of Burmese Ghouls’ good positioning, they succeeded in going straight for the base turret after emptying the battlefield; letting them gain a win for the 4th game (their 2nd game overall).
Fifth Game:

b)  Game Flow:
For the fifth game, things started well for Bren Esports as they had a tactic in which made the opposing team delay their farm. As they had good timing, they quickly secured the first turtle, maximizing their early game momentum. Kill-wise, they got in the lead by 4 kills (4 minutes in). As the game progressed, they upped the pressure because of their quick and effective rotation. Successfully pushing, the team had destroyed all the first line towers (5 minutes in). as the team, continuously secured the turtles and effectively split pushed, it made them be at an advantage; as to why it was key for the opposing team to just play things safe.
Later on, Burmese Ghouls eventually caught up with good map control which shifted the conditions. Now, Bren Esports have to take it slow to win back the lead. Now back to Burmese Ghouls, as they caught up and destroyed tower after tower, they’re now at a full advantage over the opposing team. Before the end of the game, Bren Esports successfully defended against the Lord, but their 1st tier towers are already close to destruction. As Burmese Ghouls exhibited good patience and avoided aggressiveness, the base tower of Bren Esports then easily got destroyed as there were only 2 members of the respective defending team to defend, which in the end, gave Burmese Ghouls the win for the 5th game (scoring: 2 – 3).
Sixth Game:
a)  Drafting Picks:

b)  Game Flow:
For the sixth game, an ulterior motive could be seen by Burmese Ghouls as three members had “Execution” as their skills, suggesting that they would be willing to go all-in in team fights (though risky). Things went good for them at first, as they even secured the turtle; the Burmese Ghouls are dictating the tempo. Though, at one point in the game, Bren Esports realized their power spike and played carefully; whilst Burmese Ghouls were only rushing and being reckless. For Bren Esports, they got numerous kills during the first clashes, whilst still destroying towers. Though, the Burmese Ghouls caught up. Having a good side push and map control, Bren Esports still maintained a good flow throughout the sixth game, whilst Burmese Ghouls are showing more aggression.
During the late-game, Bren Esports showed beautiful and well-executed skill combinations, as to why they got the lead (kill-wise); but of course, making sure to prioritize and focus on pushing. In the end, the duo of “TZY” brothers was a great contribution to the team’s success. The gameplay of Bren Esports, overall, had amazing tactics and strategies in which made for a good game. After wiping out, the Burmese Ghouls immediately cleared the base of the opposing team, making for their win in the 6th game (3rd win overall, making for a tie; scoring: 3-3).

b)  Game Flow:
For the seventh game, FLAPTZY from Bren Esports exhibited good rotation (early-on). For Burmese Ghouls, they had the potential to dictate the tempo of the game. Prioritizing split pushing and farming, Bren Esports established a good tactic. Though, Burmese Ghouls initially had the power spike; Bren Esports caught up easily whilst split pushing and having good tactics. In this game, Bren Esports didn’t risk too much, if they knew things were risky: they didn’t risk too much. Now, for the 6th and 7th game, Bren Esports was able to finally able to execute their strategies whilst finally pushing through with their aggressiveness; leading them to gain massive leads in the course of the two final games. This of course gave them the upper footing, and as they continuously seized the winning opportunity and maximized the momentum whilst the opposing team was affected by the intense pressure; they eventually were able to secure their 3rd and 4th wins making them catch up and even go ahead of the opposing team’s initial one-point lead; ultimately, letting them win the grand finals match and be the M2 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Champions.
Over-all, the winning conditions for Bren Esports would be their:

The outstanding Salt River Bay portfolio benefited from designs with bold, singular, primary devices that immediately draw the eye—a conch shell, a turtle, a mangrove tree. I like that approach because it helps to make a coin memorable. Thinking back to the Frank Church River of No Return wilderness coin (which will be minted in 2019): I supported the design that had a big, bold, front-facing portrait of a wolf. Kids would see that and they would all start checking their piggy banks and pocket change to find “the wolf quarter.” There would be no risk of it being just one more coin that you could describe as “the one with the mountains.” All of the Salt River Bay designs have that same type of boldness.
As an interesting sidebar: none of the designs directly illustrate the historical aspect of this historical park. But with so many excellent designs based on its natural environment, we couldn’t complain.

VI-01, which was our liaison’s preference, nicely illustrates a young red mangrove tree, which is a very distinctive type of flora, in the early stages of its life cycle. The Mint’s program managers described the scene: “The design brings awareness to the park’s endangered mangrove forests and the unique and delicate nature of how the species reproduces in salt water.” This was by far the winning design for the CCAC, earning 23 of 24 possible points in our voting.
VI-02, with its swimming school of Blackbar soldierfish, has active motion—a dimension we don’t see in every coin design. I found it appealing for that reason. It earned 8 points in our voting, tying it with VI-07 as our second choice (although far behind VI-01).
VI-03 has a bold central device in its conch-shell design, backed up by other elements important to the flora and landscape of the park—plus an artful use of white space to suggest water. It’s a good coin design, and in a portfolio of weaker contenders it would have done very well; its disadvantage was only in being part of a group of very strong competition. It earned 4 points.
VI-04 and 07 were possibly our last best chance to finally get a sea turtle into the America the Beautiful coinage program. This has been a running joke for the CCAC for several years, as turtle- and tortoise-related themes have been very popular, but have ultimately been dismissed for one reason or another.
Of VI-04 and 07, the latter is my favorite artistically. It conveys more sense of an animal in its natural habitat. In 04, the green sea turtle is much more central to the design, but that comes at the expense of a greater sense of realism—the turtle is floating in air rather than swimming in the water.
VI-04 earned 6 votes, and VI-07 earned 8.
VI-12 is artful and has personality, but I think it loses something by not showing the entire turtle, and also by not showing it in motion. Committee member Erik Jansen also pointed out the rings of water: he liked the effect, which is stylized rather than life-realistic, but he found its stylization distracting here. VI-12 earned 7 points in our voting.

Problems with Free Range Chickens
By Donna Insco, Missouri — I have kept a flock of free-range chickens for 20 years. Allowing poultry to roam can cause problems, but there are reasonable solutions to the problems with free range chickens.  Some things must be considered before letting your flock out of the coop. A free-ranging flock is not recommended if you have close neighbors. Your birds will not recognize property lines and you can’t expect a neighbor to fence his property to keep your birds out. Some breeds of poultry wander farther than others. I remember my grandmother’s guineas out in the field 150 yards from the house. However, my New Hampshires and Rhode Islands never get more than 50 yards away. Another thing to consider is the proximity of neighboring dogs, since they will likely be the predators that cause the most concern. In many areas, free running dogs outnumber the local population of wild predators.
Advantages of Free Ranging
For me, the benefits of free-range birds outweigh the disadvantages. Since I started keeping chickens, the price of 50 pounds of laying mash has nearly tripled, and the price continues to climb. Allowing birds to forage for some of their own food reduces the costs of keeping them. In summer, hens can get approximately half of their food by patrolling the yard, pasture, edge of the woods and barnyard.
Free-range chickens suppress ticks, ants and crop pests such as caterpillars and grasshoppers. Chickens relish these pests as tasty morsels. Their constant scratching in the dirt helps prevent some insect eggs from hatching by uncovering them and causing the eggs to dry out in the sun and wind.
Chickens also dislike snakes, and will sometimes let you know when one is near. My hens have a peculiar cackle when a snake is close by. Once, the flock had a snake surrounded and backed up against the truck tire. From a distance, it looked like a copperhead, but turned out to be a harmless hognose.

Disadvantages of Free Ranging
Problem #1: Flying Where They Shouldn’t Be
There are some problems with free range chickens, however.  They will completely destroy young plants in a garden. They will jump to remove tomatoes and berries from established vines, as well as peck holes in turnips, cucumbers, and squash. If they can reach it, they will either eat it or ruin it.
The solution is to fence the garden with 48-inch poultry netting with a strand of barbed wire six inches above that. Initial costs of fencing are high, but “chicken wire” will also keep out rabbits, turtles, dogs, and other small animals that can’t climb. Depending on climate, poultry netting will last for eight to 12 years before it rusts away.
My garden fence worked beautifully at keeping the hens out until I bought several dozen Barred Rocks. They were apparently the hoodlums of the chicken world, because they gleefully sailed over the fence and made confetti out of my vegetable plants. If you keep big heavy birds that don’t fly well, a garden fence may be all that is required. But now I routinely clip the flight feathers of my birds.
Problem #2: Predators
Predators cause serious problems with free range chickens. Foxes, coyotes, skunks, weasels, raccoons, opossums, and hawks all enjoy chicken for dinner so it’s important to know how to protect chickens from predators. In the years I have owned poultry, I have lost perhaps 30 birds to predators. I can honestly say that 98 percent of the time the predator was my own dog. On two separate occasions, I took in stray dogs that turned out to be chicken killers. It is probably a mistake to keep strays, or to accept second-hand or free-to-a-good-home dogs. Any canine not raised around free-roaming birds will likely become a chicken killer. Once they know it’s wrong, they can be quite sneaky at it.
Conversely, the best defense against other four-legged predators is a big farm dog patrolling his domain for interlopers. Our dogs consider themselves to be masters of all they survey. Several opossums and skunks have experienced an untimely demise because they didn’t believe it.
Protecting chickens from hawks has never been a serious problem for me. Only twice have I witnessed birds of prey attempting to take one of the hens. Once, a big red-tail plunged out of the sky, hit a hen in an explosion of feathers, but then left empty-taloned when the hen rolled under the tractor. She survived.
Another time, some sort of falcon streaked between the barn and the coop and made a tight turn directly over the heads of several hens. They didn’t wait for it to make a second pass, but dove for cover like kids playing commando. Suddenly aware that death could come from above, for weeks the flock was seldom seen out in the open. Seeing people up close makes hawks nervous, or perhaps they realize that their natural prey disappears when humans are around. So the best defense against birds of prey is a lot of outside human activity. A bunch of noisy, rambunctious children works fabulously.
Problem #3: Losing the Eggs
Adding to the list of problems with free range chickens is the loss of eggs. Instead of using the chicken nesting boxes provided, chickens may prefer to find their own secret spots to lay eggs, often inconveniently located. The cure is to keep them in their coop until at least noon, to force them to lay where you want them to. Some will still delay egg laying until they’re released. Every few days, we look in the spots where they have made secret nests in the past and manage to collect most of the eggs.
Problem #4: Foraging for Danger
Keep in mind, also, that anything harmful, such as pesticides, cleansers or fertilizer must be kept away from poultry. Chickens will eat things that other animals wouldn’t dream of eating, and since they are in the human food chain, be especially vigilant. Poultry should not be allowed to forage in the trash, so keep trash and recycling bins covered and inaccessible. Besides the obvious poisoning opportunity, things like bits of aluminum foil or Styrofoam cups or packing peanuts may stop up their crop and kill them.
A flock of hens parading around the farm is the image of country life. The problems with free range chickens can be managed so that the farmstead can enjoy the benefits of less expensive birds and fewer insect pests.
