Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (Movie)
This time Tanu (Kangana Ranaut) does not wed Manu. Instead she becomes Manu, although a different one, Manu...Mani...Manikarnika, the Queen of Jhansi.  Having done a movie with the title ‘Queen’ earlier, this time Kangana metamorphoses into the role of the real and the most revered queen of this country.  Incidentally, with this movie, she also makes her directorial debut.
Born in Varanasi, Manikarnika (renamed Lakshmibai after marriage), got her initial name from the holy Manikarnika Ghat of that city, on the suggestion of a priest.  The priest had said that, like the pious funeral pyres that have been burning continuously on the Manikarnika Ghat since ancient times, the name of this girl too would ignite the fire of patriotism in the hearts of the people of this country for years to come.  And how true was that prophecy.
Any discussion on the history of India’s freedom struggle is incomplete without the mention of Rani Lakshmibai.  At a time when very few people, including kings and royalties, dared to think of an armed rebellion against the British East India Company or the British Crown, Rani Lakshmibai decided to go all out against the imperialist forces, knowing well the consequences of it.  But when have such bravehearts cared for life, or been afraid of death!
Besides being a great warrior herself, Rani Lakshmibai had the great ability of connecting with the masses and inspiring them into joining the revolution for liberation of the motherland.  Thus, she was able to raise a contingent of self-sacrificing patriots, who lacked in numbers but not in conviction.  And with their help, she gave the British one of the toughest fights on the Indian soil. It is in this context that I feel that Lakshmibai was more than the queen of Jhansi.  She was the embodiment of Bharat and an empress of millions of patriotic hearts.
Kangana is extraordinary in her portrayal of the warrior queen.  Her costume, her body language, her majestic walk- everything has blended perfectly with her ace acting, so much so that sometimes you forget that she is Kangana Ranaut, the actress.  Particularly in the fight sequences and the war scenes, she puts the screen on fire.  When she roars ‘Har Har Mahadev’, you feel like joining in.  When she rips apart the British flag with her sword, thereby symbolically ripping apart the shackles of domination, you feel like standing in ovation.  And when she undergoes sufferings for her motherland and goes on to sacrifice her life; you cannot help tears trickling down your cheeks silently.
There are other veterans in the movie like Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Suresh Oberoi and Danny Denzongpa. All of them are good, though their roles are smaller. Ankita Lokhande, the famed TV actress, makes her big screen debut in the role of Jhalkaribai and impresses with her acting.   One pleasant surprise was the casting of Jisshu Sengupta in the role of Rani Lakshmibai’s husband- Raja Gangadhar Rao.  He does justice with the role and looks good.  However, it sounded as if his voice was dubbed.
The song ‘Vijayi Bhava’ by Shankar Mahadewan is full of vigour and patriotic sentiments, and would be a permanent addition in the playlists of this genre.
There may be certain technical inadequacies in ‘Manikarnika’, but I would choose to ignore them because the subject matter of the film more than compensates for that.
You cannot watch a movie like ‘Manikarnika’ without relating yourself to it.  First, you are filled up with an overwhelming gratitude towards our freedom fighters and start wondering whether we are proving ourselves worthy of their sacrifices. Then, you go in flashbacks because you have read about icons like Rani Lakshmibai since childhood and the texts keep coming in your mind.  For an example, this excerpt from a poem by Smt. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan:
Again, since childhood, we have heard the debates of moderates versus extremists and violence versus non-violence during the struggle for India’s freedom.  Whichever side you are inclined, the path to freedom would have been far more difficult had our heroes like Rani Lakshmibai, Mangal Pandey, Tatya Tope, Nana Saheb, not planted the seeds of revolution long before our more known freedom fighters were even born, and nourished it with their own blood.   As regards myself, I believe in the following lines by Shri Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’:
‘छिनता हो स्वत्व कोई, और तू
त्याग-तप से काम ले, यह पाप है।
पुण्य है विच्छिन्न कर देना उसे,
बढ़ रहा तेरी तरफ जो हाथ है।’

From Saptak’s treasure trove - The Hindu
The Ahmedabad-based cultural organisation’s podcasts allow listeners a deeper dive into classical music
Forty years ago, a group of classical music connoisseurs, led by tabla exponent Nandan Mehta and his sitarist wife Manju, set up a school for music in Ahmedabad called Saptak. They next began hosting a three-day annual music festival, which grew in both popularity and duration, and is today a 13-day long event. Another significant initiative was the setting up of the Saptak Archives in 2004 to digitise recordings of Saptak concerts and also to acquire rare classical music recordings.
In a recent lockdown treat, Saptak introduced podcasts and already, there are 40 podcasts covering Hindustani music, semi-classical and Carnatic-Hindustani jugalbandis. Says vocalist and contributor Srijan Deshpande, “Today the problem is not access to classical music online, it is knowing what to listen to, and what to listen for. Basically, we are trying to create a gateway to classical music.”
The music selected for the podcasts is not confined to the Saptak archives (managed by Prafull Anubhai, and comprising more than 20,000 recordings). About 30 minutes long, the podcasts are available on the Saptak YouTube channel and have been put together by a team of about 10 musician-scholars.
One of most recent podcasts was on the sitar — Manju Mehta introduced four main styles of playing the instrument — Etawah gharana, Maihar Senia, Vishnupur and Senia Jaipur.
Sitar playing techniques
Etawah gharana or Imdadkhani gharana was introduced by veteran sitariya Pt. Arvind Parikh. The right hand techniques of Hindustani instrumentalists (as opposed to Carnatic exponents) were highly evolved — the recordings of Ustad Imdad Khan in raga Bihag and of Ustad Inayat Khan in raga Bhairavi exhibited this.
Ustad Vilayat Khan, apart from modifying the sitar and eliminating the kharaj wire required for dhrupad-style aalap, focussed more on left-hand movements, which is today called the gayaki ang. However, it would be more precise to call it the khayal/ thumri ang. Ustad Vilayat Khan’s recording of raga Bahar showcases his fantastic tayyari; raga Sanjh Saravalli, composed by the legendary musician shows his immense creativity.
The Maihar Senia ‘beenkar’ gharana, established by Ustad Allaudin Khan, rightly focused on Pt. Ravi Shankar. The maestro’s disciple Shubhendra Rao, who presented the episode, explained the gharana’s link with Tansen through his daughter, who was married into a family of beenkars. Shubhendra spoke of the emphasis of the dhrupad style of aalap and jod, and then chose to focus on Pt. Ravi Shankar’s raga Parameshwari. This recording is one of his best. Episodes on the other two sitar gharanas are awaited.
Influences of gharanas
Srijan Deshpande’s three-part focus on Ustad Amir Khan (episodes 2, 13 and 30) fascinatingly traces the main musical influences on this trend-setting singer. Part 1 opens with a recording of Ustad Wahid Khan of the Kirana gharana whose ati vilambit aalap style was adopted, and prolonged further, by Ustad Amir Khan. Ustad Wahid Khan etches raga Darbari with masterly, confident strokes within the first minute or so; nowadays some vocalists tend to linger on three to four notes initially, and the contours of the raga remain obscure.
Part 2 showcases the influence of sargam (used extensively in the Carnatic vocal tradition) on Ustad Aman Ali Khan of the Bhendi Bazar gharana, which was adopted by Ustad Amir Khan. The raga is Hansadhwani, a Carnatic raga, which admirably lends itself to demonstrate this; sadly the recording quality is not good. Ustad Amir Khan’s recording of the same raga is of a private baithak; inspiring him to render some truly magnificent music.
Part 3 is devoted to Ustad Amir Khan’s amazingly intricate taans, which were inspired by Indore-based Ustad Rajab Ali Khan. Sadly, there are no available recordings of this master at his peak, so Srijan plays the recording of his disciple Ganpatrao Dewaskar in raga Adana.
Three-part Malhar series
Jaipur-Atrauli vocalist Radhika Joshi’s three-part series on Malhars (episodes 8, 19 and 33) unusually divides the Malhars into three periods — Megh, Shudh Malhar and Gaud Malhar pre-15th century; 15th-18th century includes Mian Malhar, Sur, Meera and Nat Malhars (the composition by Pt. Dinkar Kaikini in Nat Malhar is a rare gem); and 19th century till date includes Tilak, Sorath, Chaya and Anand Malhars (all combinations of Malhar with other ragas)
In episode 31, vocalist Nilesh Dhakras skilfully shows how a change of tempo in the same composition in raga Sohni sung by Pt. Gajananbua Joshi and his disciple, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, brings in virtually a new feeling to the raga. Sarod artiste Sohan Nilkanth brilliantly presents Ustad Ali Akbar Khan’s composed Chandranandan and Gauri Manjari ragas, in three episodes.
North-South jugalbandis by dhrupad exponents Gundecha Brothers and Carnatic vocalists Malladi Brothers (raga Kiravani) and the U.S.-based young singers Lalit Subramaniam (disciple of Tiruvarur S. Girish and Neyveli Santhanagopalan) and Jai Sovani (disciple of Aarti Ankalikar) singing ragas Subhapantuvarali and Lalit are other interesting episodes. The podcasts are a true treat for music lovers.
The Delhi-based author writes on Hindustani music
and musicians.

Importance of cheiloscopy in forensic science
Introduction
Human identification and recognition is of supreme importance in the forensic and criminal investigation [1]. The comparison of fingerprints known as dactyloscopy, dental records and DNA fingerprinting are the most common methods that are used for the identification purposes [2]. However, these data may not be available in some cases and thus we need to opt for other alternatives to proceed further in investigation. One such technique is cheiloscopy which deals with the study, classification, analysis and comparison of lip prints or impressions. The part of the human lip between the inner labial mucous membrane and the outer skin consists of creases and grooves. This pattern formed by creases and grooves is called as the lip print [3]. Like fingerprints, the pattern of lip prints is unique to each individual and varies from person to person. Hence, they can be used as an effective tool for the human identification purposes [4].
History
The anthropologist, R. Fischer in 1902, was the first person to recognize the presence of lines on the human lips but he did not give any practical use of this phenomenon. During 1968-1971, two Japanese scientists Yasuo Tsuchihashi and Tazuo Suzuki examined 1364 lip prints at the Department of Forensic Odontology (Tokyo University). Based on their research they concluded the uniqueness and individualistic nature of patterns of human lip prints [5]. In Hungary in 1961, the research started when lip impressions were found at the door of glass in a murder case and later they were proved to be useful in investigation process [5].
In 1974, Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classified the lip prints [6]. Various such cheiloscopic researches were carried out in different parts of the world that ultimately resulted in the confirmation of individuality of lip prints and their ability to not change for the whole lifetime of a person [5]. The examination also revealed various classifications of lip prints, different methods of collection and lifting of prints, comparison and analysis of lip traces. Nowadays also, many studies are going on to investigate further the potential of the lip impressions as a forensic tool [3].
Anatomy of the lip
Lips are two highly susceptible mobile folds that form the anterior border of the oral cavity. They consist of skin, glands, muscle and mucous membrane. The oral sphincter is formed due to the surface of lips. The upper lip is present beneath the nose and extends laterally towards the cheek from nasiolabal sulcus and the lower lip is bordered by a groove inferiorly, the labiomental sulcus [6]. The junction of two lips at the corners of the mouth is termed as lateral commissures [7].
The red part of the lips is known as vermilion and is covered with specialized stratified squamous epithelium. The vermilion border is the boundary of paler skin and distinguishes vermilion from the adjoining skin. The mucosal part of the lips is the stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium covering of the inner part of the oral cavity [7]. The vermilion consists of the grooves and creases that forms the pattern of lip prints and are important in personal identification [3].
Classification of lip prints
Various classifications have been devised by different scientists. The most commonly used classification was given by Suzuki and Tsuchihashi. They classified the prints into following groups [9]:-
Type I- Straight grooves that extend throughout the lip
Type I’- Straight grooves but are not present throughout the entire breadth of lip
Type II- Forked grooves
Type III- Intersecting grooves
Type IV- Reticulate grooves
Type V- Undetermined
Figure 1: Different types of lip prints according to Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification [13]
Lip prints as a tool in Forensics
The lip prints can be commonly found in the cases of sexual assaults, burglaries, murders, rapes etc. They may be either visible (due to lipstick applied) or invisible (latent). The latent lip prints are deposited on the surfaces because of the moisturizing done by the tongue and due to secretions of the minor salivary and sebaceous glands present on the vermilion surface of lips [6]. Thus the latent prints should always be considered while investigating the crime scene and various objects such as glasses, bottles, cups, leftover fruits, cigarette butts, bed sheets, cushions should be examined carefully. Such prints can be developed using various dyes and methods. The impressions are collected, interpreted according to different classification systems and compared with those of suspects for identification [8].
Following are the aspects that can be determined using lip prints-
Personal identification
The lip prints are unique to everyone and thus if found at the crime scene can play a significant role in identification of the criminal.
Race determination [6]
On the basis of thickness of lips, 4 groups can be identified:-
Thin lips (common in European caucasoids)
Medium lips (8 to 10 mm, are most commonly found)
Thick lips (generally found in negroids)
Mix lips (commonly found in orientals)
Sex determination [9]
Various studies have been conducted to determine sex based on the lip prints. In a research conducted by Vahanwala et al (on the basis of Suzuki and Tsuchihashi), it was concluded that certain pattern trends are generally common in one of the sexes:-
Type I and type I’ are common in females in 3rd and 4th quadrants ( in the lower lip).
Type II is dominant in males in the 2nd quadrant that is upper lip (left side)
Individuals with all quadrants having unlike patterns are commonly found in males whereas having same patterns in all four quadrants are seen in females.
The lip prints can also give other details such as cosmetics used, habits, occupational qualities and the pathological changes of lips.
Lip prints are studied in postmortem cases and important in identification of corpses [10].
Case studies where lip prints proved to be useful
In 1966 in Poland, cheiloscopy proved to be helpful in solving the case of burglary. The analysis by expert was done and it was found that the lip impression found on crime scene did not match with suspect and thus helped in proceeding further in investigation [11].
In 1970, an extremely rare case was reported where it was analyzed that the lip prints found on envelope do not belong to the suspects [12].
In 1988, a burglary case in grocery store was solved due to the lip prints found. Lip prints were found along with the tooth marks on a piece of cake. The analysis revealed that the person who had left the trace was one of the burglars. The results of both tooth mark and lip prints supported the idea of involvement of that burglar [12].
Conclusion
Lip prints are the chance prints that are left at the crime scene and are used in criminal investigation to identify the criminal or the deceased person. They need to be carefully examined and analyzed by the experts. Cheiloscopy is an emerging field of forensic science in today’s era. Various intense research and studies are being done on lip prints and identification using them.

For the executive functions of the Council, a fifth member was added. Now there were five members for home, military, law, revenue and finance. (A sixth member for public works was added in 1874.) Lord Canning, who was the Governor-General and Viceroy at the time, introduced the portfolio system. In this system, each member was assigned a portfolio of a particular department. For legislative purposes, the Governor-General’s Council was enlarged. Now, there were to be between 6 and 12 additional members (nominated by the Governor-General). There were appointed for a period of 2 years. Out of these, at least half of the additional members were to be non-official (British or Indian). Their functions were confined to legislative measures. Lord Canning nominated three Indians to the Council in 1862 namely, the Raja of Benares, the Maharaja of Patiala and Sir Dinkar Rao. Any bill related to public revenue or debt, military, religion or foreign affairs could not be passed without the Governor-General’s assent. The Viceroy had the power to overrule the council if necessary. The Governor-General also had the power to promulgate ordinances without the council’s concurrence during emergencies. The Secretary of State for India in Britain could also dissolve any act passed by the Governor-General’s Council. This Act restored the legislative powers of the Governor-in-Councils of the Presidencies of Madras and Bombay (which was taken away by the Charter Act of 1833). The legislative council of Calcutta had extensive power to pass laws for the whole of British India. There was provision made for the formation of legislative councils in other provinces. New provinces could also be created for legislative purposes and Lieutenant Governors be appointed for them. Legislative councils were formed in other provinces in Bengal in 1862, North-West Frontier Province in 1886 and Punjab and Burma in 1897.

Tributes to Nisar Bazmi, on his 11th death anniversary today. Nisar Bazmi had an illustrious career as a music composer not only in India but also in Pakistan. A musical prodigy, composer and singer, Nisar Bazmi is a forgotten name in the history of Indian cinema. On March 22, 2007, newspapers in Pakistan mourned the loss of one of their most competent film music composers. That Nisar Bazmi began his career in the vast industry of Indian cinema was but a footnote in his career. Born in the district of Jalgaon in Maharashtra, Bazmi had no tutelage or background in music. This did not restrict his musical genius in any way. Struggling through the miseries of poverty at an early age, Bazmi joined the qawwali troupe of Yasin Khan. It was here that the youngster learned the ropes of classical Hindustani music. Penury might have pushed him into music, but his natural talents drove him higher up the scales. Having noticed Bazmi's individual skills at a concert, Ustad Amanullah Khan took him up as a disciple. Nisar Bazmi spent four years learning the arts and travelling with the Ustad's troupe. Soon, All India Radio offered Bazmi a stint as a staff artist. This was the perfect launchpad for the next leap he was about to make. The 40s were a great age for Indian theatre and cinema. The new Progressive movement had opened up the floodgates for ethnic Indian music and plays. It was one such play, Nadir Shah Durrani, that got Bazmi noticed by the film industry. Dinkar Rao, a well known Hindustani music composer, offered Bazmi the chance to provide music for the play. Sung by the illustrious Amiri Bai Karnataki and Rafiq Ghaznavi, Bazmi's music captured the soul of the play. Recognition arrived further in the form of AR Zamindar. A prominent producer in the budding Indian film industry, Zamindar tasked Bazmi with composing the music for his film Jamna Paar in 1946. It began a fruitful period in Bazmi's music career. Over the next couple of decades, Nisar Bazmi composed music for 40 films like Jeb Katra, Khauffnaak, Aankhen, Dagabaaz and Khoj. His songs were put to voice by the top artistes of the day like Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey. Among his troupe were two very gifted artistes, who would go on to become the leading lights of the Indian music industry themselves, Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma. In 1962, on being invited by Fazal Karim Fazli, a Pakistani filmmaker, Bazmi took to composing music for a relatively unknown Pakistani film industry. His work earned him praise and a huge fan following. The film Nagmani remains one of his most popular works, with compositions sung by the legendary Noorjehan. In 2007, his career and life came to an abrupt end. Yet, Bazmi left some unforgettable memories and an imprint as one of the foremost participants from the exclusive club of Hindustani music to have composed for films in India. Effectively clearing throat problems that affect your voice
It is incredibly important for us to speak. Most of us are talking at least a fair amount both at work and while enjoying leisure time. It is very known fact that we are sensitive to some prolonged damage or illness which is affecting our ability to speak. Strained vocal cords are one example of damage which is done to our vocal cords which is affecting the way we communicate. This is an ailment which is affecting the people who use their voices more than average people, such as signers or people who regularly speak loudly or frequently. There are many things which can damage and strain your vocal cords. The affliction can manifest itself in many different ways. But also it is important to note that we think it is strain or damage but in fact it is an infection. It is characterized by fever, difficulty in swallowing, mild to moderate pain in the throat or ear, excessive mucus buildup and poor voice quality. While it might feel slight, this can progress into a full – fledged and rather dangerous infection if it is allowed to progress for too long. If you have noticed some voice issues, then you should talk with your doctor about this problem. He or she will tell you which the best natural cure is for you.
Here are some home remedies for voice issues
