Virus’s impact (AP) The eruption of COVID-19 last year caused the proportion of people working from home in the U.S. to nearly double. The share of employed people working from home shot up from just 22% in 2019 to 42% in 2020, the Labor Department said Thursday. That was among the striking findings of an annual government survey that documents the far-reaching impact the viral pandemic has had on Americans’ everyday lives since it struck in March of last year. Because of the pandemic and the widespread social distancing it required, people on average spent more time last year sleeping, watching TV, playing games, using a computer and relaxing and thinking—and less time socializing and communicating in person—than in 2019. Adults also spent more hours, on average, caring for children in their household. The survey also lends support to concerns that the pandemic worsened isolation for millions of Americans. With people working from home or attending school online, the time they spent alone increased. Among Americans ages 15 and over, time spent alone each day increased by an average of an hour. For those ages 15 to 19, it rose 1.7 hours per day.

Medical debt (NYT) A new study put the amount of unpaid medical bills held by collection agencies at $140 billion last year, up from $81 billion according to a similar analysis carried out in 2016. The analysis looked at 10 percent of all TransUnion credit reports and found that about 18 percent of Americans have medical debt that has been sent to collections. Over the period from 2009 to 2020, the largest source of debt owed to collection agencies became medical debt. The $140 billion, to be clear, is not an estimate of medical debt; that figure is far higher, as the $140 billion is merely the debt that has been passed along to the vultures.

Crews make progress on huge Oregon blaze (AP) The nation’s largest wildfire raged through southern Oregon on Friday but crews were scaling back some night operations as hard work and weaker winds helped reduce the spread of flames even as wildfires continued to threaten homes in neighboring California. The Bootleg Fire, which has destroyed an area half the size of Rhode Island, was 40% surrounded after burning some 70 homes, mainly cabins, fire officials said. The fire, which was sparked by lightning, had been expanding by up to 4 miles (6 kilometers) a day, pushed by strong winds and critically dry weather.

Thousands of bullets have been fired in this D.C. neighborhood (Washington Post) Markeith Muskelly, a barber who has spent half his 52 years cutting hair in Southeast Washington, has seen people get shot on the street outside the shop where he works. Last fall, he saw a man die there. The shop is tucked into a corner of the Benco Shopping Center, a mainstay in the Marshall Heights neighborhood for six decades. Its plate-glass window has long offered a view of one of the most dangerous streets in the District. In the neighborhood where Muskelly works, gun violence has affected generations, bringing a sad realization that, for some, that the danger may never end. A Washington Post analysis shows that in a recent period of a little more than three years, crime scene technicians found 2,759 bullet casings—byproducts of shootings involving rifles, pistols and shotguns—in about a one-square-mile area that includes Benning Road in Marshall Heights, with Benco between them. Bullets have struck people, pockmarked parked cars, embedded in walls of homes and shattered windows of businesses filled with patrons. Patrol officers carry “quick clot gauze” used by troops in war.

Volunteers hunting for Mexico’s ‘disappeared’ become targets (AP) The mainly female volunteers who fan out across Mexico to hunt for the bodies of murdered relatives are themselves increasingly being killed, putting to the test the government’s promise to help them in their quest for a final shred of justice: a chance to mourn. Those who carry on the effort tell tales of long getting threats and being watched—presumably by the same people who murdered their sons, brothers and husbands. But now threats have given way to bullets in the heads of searchers who have proved far better than the authorities at ferreting out the clandestine burial and burning pits that number in the thousands. Two searchers have been slain the past two months. Fear has always accompanied the searchers. They go to wild, remote, abandoned places where terrible crimes have been committed. But up to now, they mostly shrugged it off.

Cuba’s communist authorities have long feared change. Street protests show the risk of resisting it. (Washington Post) On a farm not far from the town where Cuba’s protests first erupted this month, police investigators last summer carried out a major sting operation. Their target was not a dissident activist, but a dairyman nicknamed El Rey del Queso: The King of Cheese. His offense? Operating a clandestine factory that produced tire-sized hunks of cheese for private sale in Havana. Authorities arrested the King, confiscated hundreds of pounds of yellow queso and produced a news report about the bust on Cuban state television depicting him as a villain. Cuba’s communist authorities have for decades treated private entrepreneurs as a threat to be contained, not encouraged. Long after China and Vietnam embraced market reforms, using material prosperity to buttress authoritarian rule, Cuba has clung to an economic model based on centralized planning and state control. The July 11 protests that shook Cuba’s rulers showed that model might be their biggest vulnerability, as its weak foundation is further eroded by the decades-long U.S. embargo, additional Trump-era sanctions and now the coronavirus pandemic. The country’s economy contracted 11 percent last year, according to government data. Cubans are spending hours in lines to buy basic goods they can barely afford. Hospitals have been overwhelmed by covid patients, and medicine is scarce. Power outages are turning stifling summer heat into an explosive fuse. “Unless the government makes profound changes, I think people will take to the streets again,” said Camilo Condis, a Cuban entrepreneur and business advocate.

Haiti leader’s slaying exposes role of ex-Colombian soldiers (AP) As the coronavirus pandemic squeezed Colombia, the Romero family was in need of money to pay the mortgage. Mauricio Romero Medina’s $790 a month pension as a retired soldier wasn’t going far. Then came a call offering a solution. When Romero answered the phone on June 2, another veteran, Duberney Capador, offered what he said was a legal, long-term job requiring only a passport. But Romero had to make a decision fast. “Talk about it with your family and if you are interested, see you tomorrow in Bogota, because the flight is the day after tomorrow,” Romero’s wife, Giovanna, told The Associated Press, recalling the conversation. A month later, Romero and Capador were dead and 18 Colombians were reportedly in custody, accused of taking part in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. It’s a case that dramatizes Colombia’s role as a recruiting ground for the global security industry—and its murkier, mercenary corners. Colombia’s Defense Ministry says about 10,600 soldiers retire each year, many highly trained warriors forged in a decades-long battle against leftist rebels and drug trafficking cartels. Many—including a number of those involved in Haiti—have been trained by the U.S. military. Those soldiers make up a pool of recruits for companies seeking a wide range of services—as consultants or bodyguards, in teams guarding Middle Eastern oil pipelines or as part of military-like private security in places like the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan. The UAE paid Colombian veterans to join in the battle against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Italy makes health pass mandatory for many leisure activities, in bid to pressure the unvaccinated (Washington Post) Italy on Thursday significantly ramped up pressure on its unvaccinated population, announcing that a digital or printed health pass would be necessary for accessing a range of everyday leisure activities, from theaters to indoor dining. The decision puts Italy in a rare category along with France among Western nations that have been willing to leverage certain freedoms and equalities now that vaccines have become widely available. Italy is essentially betting that it can revive its slowing vaccination campaign—and avoid future, onerous restrictions—by creating heavy incentives for inoculation, in the kind of step that would be politically unthinkable in the United States. Italy is looking for ways to avoid a new round of closures and curfews. For now, every Italian region is “white”—meaning that life proceeds almost as normal, and people can stay out as late as they want. That has made for a joyful Italian summer.

‘Messy’ fight (Washington Post) KUNDUZ, Afghanistan—Around 3 a.m., a small team of elite special forces were halfway through an operation to retake a sliver of territory along the city’s northern edge when a police unit assisting them refused to advance. Hours later, the police fled, ceding the territory back to the Taliban. For weeks, the Afghan military has struggled to hold provincial capitals such as Kunduz after a surge of Taliban attacks that came as U.S. forces withdrew and U.S. air support dropped. Afghan ground forces are increasingly used to fill the void. Their capabilities are uneven, however, resulting in government advances that often rapidly evaporate. Experienced and motivated elite units are leading the battle to retake territory. But the troops called up to secure those gains—army, police and irregular fighters—often have little training and are less inclined to fight. First Lt. Abdullah Ansari, 30, led the elite unit retaking territory house by house in Kunduz earlier this month. He said the debacle on Kunduz’s northern edge made him miss working with U.S. troops. “Now everything is just messy,” he said.

Death rates soar in Southeast Asia as virus wave spreads (AP) Indonesia has converted nearly its entire oxygen production to medical use just to meet the demand from COVID-19 patients struggling to breathe. Overflowing hospitals in Malaysia had to resort to treating patients on the floor. And in Myanmar’s largest city, graveyard workers have been laboring day and night to keep up with the grim demand for new cremations and burials. Images of bodies burning in open-air pyres during the peak of the pandemic in India horrified the world in May, but in the last two weeks the three Southeast Asian nations have now all surpassed India’s peak per capita death rate as a new coronavirus wave, fueled by the virulent delta variant, tightens its grip on the region. The deaths have followed record numbers of new cases being reported in countries across the region which have left health care systems struggling to cope and governments scrambling to implement new restrictions to try to slow the spread.

Typhoon to bring heavy rains to Taiwan, China over weekend (AP) A typhoon is forecast to bring heavy rains to Taiwan and coastal China over the weekend, days after the worst flooding on record in a central Chinese province caused at least 51 deaths. Forecasters say Typhoon In-fa is moving toward China and expected to make landfall in Zhejiang province either Sunday afternoon or early Monday morning. Zhejiang’s bureau of emergency management said on its microblog Friday that it is raising its risk warning to the second-highest level and calling on all localities to take preventative measures. Those usually include recalling fishing boats to port and relocating people living in vulnerable coastal communities. Fujian province to the south has issued similar orders. On its current track, the eye of the typhoon is expected to pass north of Taiwan while still bringing considerable rain to the island.

BAE Systems delivers the thousandth fuselage of the F-35 Lightning II to Lockheed Martin

BAE Systems delivered the thousandth rear fuselage to the Lockheed Martin for the F-35, the most advanced and capable fifth-generation fighter in the world.

More than 1,500 employees at the company's premises in Samlesbury, Lancashire, produce the rear fuselage for each F-35 of the global fleet. The first fuselage was delivered to Lockheed Martin in 2005.

“This is a significant moment for everyone involved in the program and a proof of the highly qualified workforce we have in northwestern England,” said Cliff Robson, managing director of the BAE Systems Air group, at an event celebrating the 1000th delivery today. “Our role in the F-35 program is another example of how we make a substantial contribution to the UK’s local and national economy and help provide capacity that is critical to national security.”

“The F-35 program drives UK economic growth and prosperity by injecting approximately £41 billion into the UK economy and supporting more than 20,000 jobs in the UK supply chain, many of them based in the northwest of the country,” said Bridget Lauderdale, vice president of Lockheed Martin and general manager of the F-35 program. “With more than 500 companies in our supply chain in the United Kingdom, we are proud of the role that our partnership with BAE Systems has in supplying the world’s most advanced aircraft to the United Kingdom and 17 other allied nations.”

BAE Systems has been involved in the F-35 program since its inception and plays important roles in the development, manufacture and maintenance of the aircraft, which is operated by the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and air forces around the world.

“This is an important milestone for our business and demonstrates the experience of our people and their commitment to fulfilling the F-35 program,” said Susan Addison, senior vice president of U.S. programs at BAE Systems Air. "The functions we perform today are supported by a world-class manufacturing pedigree and industrial know-how in the United Kingdom, which has been developed over decades of cutting-edge experience in aerial combat programs. We are proud of what we do for our customers and the air forces that help keep us safe."

The record global F-35 program totals more than 3,000 F-35s among the 17 customers of the program. Work on the program will continue at BAE Systems' advanced manufacturing center in Samlesbury for many years.

Out of the Lab and Into the Air

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Apollo Moon landing, remember that many Apollo astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, the first person on the Moon, were test pilots who flew experimental planes for NASA in our earliest days. Since long before we landed on the Moon, aeronautics has been a key piece of our mission.

The U.S. founded the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA), our predecessor, in 1914. NACA, collaborating with the U.S. Air Force, pioneered the X-1 aircraft, the first crewed plane to achieve supersonic speeds. NACA was largely responsible for turning the slow, cloth-and-wood biplanes of the early 1900s into the sleek, powerful jets of today.

When NACA was absorbed by the newly formed NASA in 1958, we continued NACA’s mission, propelling American innovation in aviation. Today, our portfolio of aeronautics missions and new flight technologies is as robust as ever. Below are seven of our innovations flying out of the lab and into the air, getting you gate-to-gate safely and on time while transforming aviation into an economic engine!

1. X-59 QueSST

Our X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (QueSST) flies faster than the speed of sound without the window-shattering sonic boom. This innovation may kick off a new generation of quiet, supersonic planes that can fly over land without disturbing those below. Once adopted, QueSST’s technologies could drastically reduce the time it takes to fly across the U.S. and even to other countries worldwide!

2. X-57 Maxwell

Our X-57 Maxwell will be the first all-electric X-plane, demonstrating the benefits distributed electric propulsion may have for future aviation. The Maxwell is named for Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell, who is known for his theories on electricity and electromagnetism. The name is also a play on words because, as X-57 engineer Nick Borer said, “It has the maximum number of propellers.”

3. Airborne Science

Our airborne science program provides Earth scientists and astrophysicists with the unique insights that can be gleaned from the air and above the clouds. By flying aircraft with Earth science instruments and advanced telescopes, we can gather high resolution data about our changing Earth and the stars above. Airborne science outreach specialist (and champion aerobatics pilot) Susan Bell highlights Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments Experiment – Air Quality (FIREX-AQ), a joint mission with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“FIREX-AQ will investigate the impact of wildfires and agricultural fires on air quality,” Susan said. “Living in the Western U.S., I witness firsthand the impact that smoke can have on the communities we live in and up in the air as a pilot.”

4. Search and Rescue

Our Search and Rescue (SAR) office serves as the technology development arm of the international satellite-aided search and rescue program, Cospas-Sarsat. Recently, the Federal Aviation Administration adopted SAR’s guidance regarding the testing and installation of the NASA-developed beacons required for planes. These recommendations will greatly improve aviation beacon performance and, ultimately, save more lives.

SAR developed the recommendations through crash test research at our Langley Research Center’s gantry in Hampton, Virginia, where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin trained for the Apollo Moon landing!

5. MADCAT

Our Mission Adaptive Digital Composite Aerostructure Technologies (MADCAT) team at our Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley uses strong, lightweight carbon fiber composites to design airplane wings that can adapt on the fly. The composite materials are used to create “blocks,” modular units that can be arranged in repeating lattice patterns — the same crisscrossing patterns you might see in a garden fence!

6. RVLT

Our Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT) project leverages the agency’s aeronautics expertise to advance vertical flight capabilities in the U.S. The RVLT project helps design and test innovative new vehicle designs, like aircraft that can take off like a helicopter but fly like a plane. Additionally, the project uses computer models of the complex airflow surrounding whirring rotors to design vehicles that make less noise!

7. Moon to Mars

We’re with you when you fly — even on Mars! The 1958 law that established the agency charged us with solving the problems of flight within the atmosphere… but it didn’t say WHICH atmosphere. We’re applying our aeronautics expertise to the thin atmosphere of Mars, developing technologies that will enable flight on the Red Planet. In fact, a small, robotic helicopter will accompany the Mars 2020 rover, becoming the first heavier-than-air vehicle to fly on — err, above — Mars!

Ramadan’s Success Story Visible in Makkah’s Grand Mosque

Authority tasked with keeping pilgrims safe in holy sites offers glimpse behind the scenes

MAKKAH, Saudi Arabia: Each year, millions of worshippers travel to Saudi Arabia to pray at the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah. Keeping these vast crowds safe and provided for is a gargantuan task at the best of times, but the pandemic has added many more layers of preparation.

Saudi Arabia banned international visitors from making the Islamic pilgrimage, or Hajj, in 2020, in a bid to control the coronavirus pandemic. Only a very limited number of people residing in the Kingdom were permitted to take part.

Now that flights have resumed and the Kingdom’s borders have reopened, worshippers are permitted to enter — provided they abide by a strict set of protocols.

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, which is overseeing these protocols, works year-round to improve the experience for visitors and staff.

Hani Haider, the presidency spokesperson, said in a recent statement that “immunization is an essential condition for performing Umrah and praying in the Two Holy Mosques.

“It is the first condition for applicants requesting permits to pray, perform Umrah or visit the Grand Mosque in Makkah. The permits are issued through the Eatmarna app or the Tawakkalna app. Entering the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah requires the Tawakkalna app.

“This applies to immunized people that have received their first dose of the vaccine no less than 14 days prior to their visit, and to people that have completely recovered from a coronavirus infection.

“Three tracks have been designated to the elderly and people with special needs near the holy Kaaba, while six entry points have been dedicated to pilgrims that are being allowed to the Mataf dish as batches through 14 virtual tracks,” he added.

Haider called on pilgrims to follow these tracks in order to ensure the smooth flow of movement, in addition to abiding by the preventive measures put in place to preserve everyone’s safety.

Many of these measures are carefully managed by the presidency’s Technical and Service Affairs Agency. Its staff distribute single-use Zamzam water bottles in the Mataf dish and squares.

They also oversee transport inside the Grand Mosque, organize the entry and exit of visitors, assist people with special needs, and supervise the equipping, disinfecting and perfuming process.

The agency coordinates the movement of pilgrims inside the Grand Mosque and its squares with a crew of observers to ensure COVID-19 containment measures are respected.

Its staff of 4,000 cleaners disinfect and perfume the Grand Mosque 10 times a day, using more than 60,000 liters of disinfectant and 1,200 liters of air freshener.

More than 70 field teams have also been formed to disinfect the Grand Mosque, its outer squares and bathrooms using carefully selected eco-friendly materials to ensure the safety of visitors.

More than 500 automatic hand sanitizing machines equipped with sensors have been distributed throughout the mosque as part of health precautions.

Meanwhile, the Transport Services Department has raised its readiness to serve visitors to the Grand Mosque by preparing more than 5,000 regular vehicles and 3,000 electric vehicles.

Stickers stressing the importance of social distancing can be found at distribution points, while other signs can found on vehicles to confirm they are disinfected before and after use.

The agency has also recruited more than 100 observers and deployed them at the Grand Mosque’s doors to welcome pilgrims, and guide them to their designated areas.

Authorities have allocated 10 doors for pilgrims, including the King Fahd Gate, Ajyad Gate, Safa Gate, Gate of the Prophet, Bani Shaybah Gate, Al-Marwah Gate, Al-Arqam Gate and Al-Marwah Bridge.

Security personnel are on hand to guide worshippers in case prayer areas become overcrowded.

One of the agency’s most important tasks is monitoring the operational status of all 200 escalators and 14 elevators, overseen by more than 90 Saudi engineers and technicians.

They are also in charge of checking the sound system, which is made up of almost 8,000 speakers, nine microphones for the imam and six microphones for the muezzin.

Additionally, the agency is in charge of conditioning the air in the Grand Mosque’s squares through water-spraying technology, absorbing the thermal energy from the outside air and lowering its temperature.

There are almost 250 spray fans spread across the squares of the Grand Mosque, which are used during prayer times when the Grand Mosque’s squares are full and the temperature is high.

“The state has mobilized all of its human and material capabilities on various aspects, including engineering, technical and services, to ensure the pilgrims’ comfort,” Kamelia bint Mohammed Al-Daadi, assistant secretary for women’s services and administrative affairs, told Arab News.

Her department has launched four initiatives to help improve security and comfort for female visitors.

The first is dubbed “Safe Sanctuary,” which focuses on managing the squares and transport services dedicated to women, providing name-tagged scarves, and raising awareness about preventive measures through a barcode system that displays incorrect behaviors.

Next is “Good Hospitality,” which manages the doors dedicated to women, welcomes pilgrims, guides them, and provides them with services in numerous languages.

The third initiative is centered on cleanliness, focusing on the disinfection of carpets in the Grand Mosque so that female pilgrims can safely and hygienically break their fast and perform Tarawih prayers.

The initiative’s logo is printed on all sanitized equipment and staff have all been trained to operate disinfection machines, and to distribute disinfectants and cleaning tools in female facilities.

Finally, the department’s Women Suqya Zamzam Unit is responsible for distributing water from the Zamzam well in sanitary containers to female pilgrims.

The General Department for Administrative, Planning, Institutional Excellence and Technology has also launched four initiatives to prepare its staff. The first, dubbed “Digital Flashes,” is overseen by the Technology and Electronic Services Unit.

“It consists of preparing and designing educational publications to promote knowledge and develop digital skills, and publishing them through various social media platforms on a daily basis during the holy month of Ramadan,” Al-Daadi said.

Another initiative called “Proficiency” is carried out by the Planning, Institutional Excellence and Quality Unit, and is designed to actively spread the message and vision of the Two Holy Mosques, and hold educational workshops.

The third, named “Rehabilitation,” is carried out by the Services of Temporary Female Workers Unit to provide temporary female staff with a rehabilitation program before the Hajj season begins and to celebrate World Manager’s Day.

“Lastly, the fourth initiative is ‘Enrichment,’ which is carried out by the Women Training Academy,” Al-Daadi said.

“It consists of organizing an awareness-raising forum that builds bridges between the female employees of the Grand Mosque and female pilgrims in order to raise the level of readiness.”

Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Wandt, a retired fighter pilot of the 211ª Fighter Wing of the Swedish Air Force, will go to the International Space Station in January 2024.

Marcus served for a long time in the F21 squadron and did his basic air combat training in the 211ª Flight Division, among other squadrons, confirmed the current commander of the F21 squadron, Peter Greberg.

"Marcus is a fantastic person and I find it difficult to find someone more suitable for the task than him. We, as a squad, wish him all the best in his mission in space," said Peter Greberg.

During space flight, astronauts will stay about 10 days on the space station to perform a variety of scientific experiments that can only be performed in the absence of gravity. The complex task requires extensive preparation. Marcus Wandt has already started his training, which takes place in training centers in Europe and the USA.

The Swedish Space Agency is currently working, in close cooperation with ESA, on the preparation of a detailed research program and the preparation of the experiments that the Swedish astronaut will carry out on the space station.

The date is currently set for January 10, but can be adjusted. The trip starts from the classic Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Space X and its Falcon 9 rocket with the associated Dragon capsule that will transport the crew that will include Marcus to the space station.

Airport Surveillance Is About to Reach a Whole New Level of Ridiculousness

Flying seems like just about the most dangerous thing you could possibly do right now. You’re spending hours confined in a metal tube, with hundreds of strangers from all over the world, without any way of knowing where they’ve been or whom they’ve been with. Under those circumstances, you’d expect a few additional safety requirements. No one wants to get sick—so what’s the loss of a little more privacy, if it keeps you out of harm’s way?

That, at least, is the rationale behind a fleet of new measures either under consideration or already in place at airports around the world. In the U.S., the Transportation Security Administration is reportedly preparing to begin checking passengers’ temperatures before they board. New arrivals to the U.K. must, as of June 8, provide an address where they will self-isolate for 14 days. (Police will follow up with “surprise” in-person checks.) More than 45 countries have rolled out “digital ankle bracelet” tracking apps, which are likely to be either mandatory or strongly encouraged for air travelers. Meanwhile, biometric scanning, to check people against their ID, is being aggressively tested by airports from Munich to Sydney.

Since 9/11, we’ve grown accustomed to compromising on privacy when we fly. It’s a trade-off: No one likes to be X-rayed, patted down, or prodded, but it’s the price we’ve learned to pay for our alleged safety. Few would fight extending those measures to protect us from getting sick—provided they actually do the job. But privacy experts and epidemiologists alike question the utility of some of proposed plans, as well as whose responsibility they are. Is it better to have your data held indefinitely by the government, or by an airline? And if the measures don’t work, what are they there for?

Here’s the thing: Between the hospital-grade air filters and extremely dry air, a plane in flight actually seems to be a fairly inhospitable environment for the virus—at least compared with going out for dinner, attending a cocktail party, or even going to choir practice. There’s some risk, especially in the terminal or during boarding, but it seems comparable to a bus, a train, or any other crowded environment, none of which are likely to have greater security measures.

Take one very recent study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal: On a 15-hour flight between Guangzhou, China, and Toronto, more than 25 people sat within 2 meters (7 feet) of a symptomatic passenger. Not one of them later tested positive for COVID-19. Meanwhile, tracing of 1,100 infected air passengers, who between them came into contact with 100,000 others, “revealed no secondary transmission,” according to a statement from the International Air Transport Association. (Two crew members may have been infected by one of these passengers.)

If the risk is fairly small to begin with, we might expect that any measures taken will actually be effective—especially if our privacy takes a hit in the process. But many of the proposed initiatives actually don’t seem to do the job, raising concerns that they may be little more than health security theater, designed to encourage passengers to return to the skies. “People want that simple solution, to give themselves the peace of mind that it’s all going to be okay,” says Jeff Price, an aviation security expert. “Even though that solution is not doing anything to really solve the problem—it just gives the appearance.”

Take temperature checks. In early May, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scientists pushed back against Department of Homeland Security requests to introduce widespread thermal scanning in airports. In an email to DHS officials obtained by USA Today, Martin Cetron, the CDC’s director of global mitigation and quarantine, described the process as “poorly designed” and without “a probability of mission success.” He concluded, “Please kindly strike out CDC from this role.”

When it comes to COVID-19 detection, health experts say, temperature checks alone simply aren’t sensitive enough to do the job, especially as many infectious passengers exhibit no symptoms. An elevated temperature could be the result of cancer treatment, a urinary tract infection, or other unrelated factors, many of which could be hard to justify to a security agent. (It’s also extremely possible to “trick” these sensors, including taking ibuprofen to lower a fever.)

With the CDC opting out, the U.S. government has reportedly turned to the TSA to perform the job. It’s a problem, says Price: “The TSA’s primary function is security for transportation, not public health. They’re trained to look for items that could damage an aircraft or be used to damage an aircraft or hijack a plane,” he says. “They’re not trained as health experts.”

Travis LeBlanc is one of two Democrats on the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, an independent agency within the U.S. government that weighs citizens’ right to privacy against laws designed to counter terrorism. Since last year, he says, the board has been conducting an oversight investigation into the use of biometrics in aviation security, primarily focused on the use of facial recognition technology. Given their current work, he says, he was shocked to learn from media reports rather than the government itself that the TSA was considering conducting mandatory temperature checks on travelers. “We have an oversight project and no one mentioned that,” he says. “I was surprised as to how TSA could have the legal authority to do this.”

In many respects, it’s a civil rights issue, he says: “We know that surveillance activities typically disproportionately affect people of color.” More than that, he worries that banning people with COVID-19 from flying, whether or not they are infectious, could disproportionately affect people of color, who have been more likely to contract the virus. For regular travel, flying a week or so later might not be a problem—but it becomes trickier to judge when not allowing a passenger to fly could cost them their employment.

LeBlanc would prefer airlines to take responsibility for these or other checks. It makes it easier for airlines to rebook passengers onto different flights, minimizing the likelihood that vulnerable travelers could wind up stranded. Finally, he says, “The airline is not likely to collect the information in a massive government database that is accessed by lots of government agencies and kept in perpetuity.”

While some U.S. airlines such as Frontier have opted to do their own temperature screening, others have been outspoken in their desire for the government to take the reins. In a meeting with President Donald Trump in May, Gary Kelly, the Southwest CEO, pushed for a health screening to become part of the TSA experience. “A temperature check like we had today coming into the White House would be very sensible,” he said, “along with a health declaration.” (When asked about the CDC’s view that temperature checks were not effective, Southwest declined to comment.)

It’s not surprising that airlines would look to offload the cost of making travelers feel safe, says Price. “Airlines traditionally don’t want to take on any responsibility that’s an expense, where there’s no moneymaking portion,” says Price. “But it’s really their responsibility to ensure that nobody that is a safety risk, or security risk, or public health risk, gets on the airplane.”

Other measures are designed to protect essential airport staff from close contact with passengers. Biometric scanning of the sort in place in Australia could allow passengers to move seamlessly through the terminal, without coming within a few feet of anyone else. But there are huge concerns here too, says Justin Brookman, the director of consumer privacy and technology policy for the nonprofit Consumer Reports. “Biometric information can be misused in so many ways, and can be exported to other contexts,” he says. “I’m disappointed by how quickly it’s being adopted—I don’t think that the incremental convenience justifies the collection of these really sensitive databases.”

While more and more biometric scanning may at this point be unavoidable, passengers have resisted contacting tracing apps. Even in countries where surveillance is the norm, like Singapore, adherence rates are low, with citizens leery of handing over that much information. But with international travel on the verge of opening back up, states with quarantine procedures may opt to require incoming passengers to download one if they wish to enter the country.

In India, for instance, passengers must show officials that they are marked as “safe” on the country’s national contact tracing app, Aarogya Setu (which means “bridge to health” in Sanskrit). While it’s not strictly compulsory, failure to do so could result in additional quarantine requirements as well as having to justify one’s self to airport officials. It’s concerning, says Brookman. “I would not want to see any travel contingent upon sharing your historical and prospective movements with the government,” he said. “I think that’s not justified remotely, under the circumstances.”

As they currently stand, these measures are concerning. But what’s arguably more worrying is that, like many post-9/11 security measures, they may remain in place in perpetuity, or at least long after the initial justification ceases to be relevant. “It’s a reminder of why we don’t like to build these [security] infrastructures, because they become so easy to expand once they’re set up,” says Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst with the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project. “And of why we don’t want infrastructures that are built specifically for COVID detection to outlast the pandemic—because it becomes easy to piggyback all kinds of surveillance and checkpoint functionalities onto them.”

The dark armored mech hesitated for only a nanoklik. His mouth instantly went grim and he tightened his servo into a fist at his side.

“Have everyone report to assigned designations, I want a Code Onyx issued immediately. We need those photon blasters active immediately.”

“Yes sir,” a femme immediately responded as she switched on the ship’s broadcasting comm.

As the femme issued the announcement, the obsidian mech flicked a digit to the mech. He offered a single nod as he turned off the communication’s with Guard.

Pressing a digit to his helm, Blackout opened a private channel with the other commander as he commented roughly: “Sir, if they’ve got a transwarp drive, there’s no telling what else they’ve picked up while scavenging. I’m sure they caught track of our trail and pinpointed out location in order to jump to us. There’s no telling what kind of fight we may have to prepare for.”

“We weren’t any more prepared last time than this time,” Guard gravelly responded.

A grin slowly appeared across Blackout’s face. “I disagree sir. The routine training experiences must count for something.”

There was a brief pause, and then a vent as the older bot quietly replied, “Aye, but I would rather not risk the lives of bots who took this stance to avoid fighting.”

“I’ll do my best to protect everybot I can, sir.”

“I know you will, Blackout.”

The assurance in Guard’s voice consoled and inkling of doubt the former Decepticon Hound had. Taking a deep breath, he released it slowly to steady his thoughts.

“Disconnecting communications,” Blackout responded, removing his digit from his helm. As the connection went offline, he looked around the room; taking the first bot who’s optics were staring to him with anticipation.

“Have one of the mech’s who is regularly posted at the energon storage go to stand outside the medic bay.”

“Aye, sir.”

Guard wasn’t going to be very pleased having someone protecting him, but he was just as much as a presence on this ship as Blackout himself. Even more so. Besides, if Guard threw a fit about it later, Blackout could easily explain that it was just a precautionary measure to keep any patients safe that may have been carted down there.

“Ship exiting the wormhole, sir.”

“Is the generator ready?”

“Just about, sir.”

“Fire when ready.”

Taking to his pedes, Blackout reached over to the arm of his chair and flicked up a piece of simple plastic. He tapped a button, bringing up a holographic viewing screen in the middle of the room that showed the view of space from the stern of the Rising Star.

Just off to their right flank behind them, the large silver battle cruiser Revenge II was already more than halfway out of its wormhole.

“Power almost at full percent, sir.”

“Prepare to engage the counter EMP.”

Narrowing his optics, Blackout took a step towards the transparent image. There was a strange light winking at the top of the Revenge II, it almost looked like-

A thin beam of light shot out from the ship. A groan moved through the Rising Star as it shuddered lightly.

Everybot in the room was looking to Blackout, fear in their optics.

“Report?” Blackout calmly remarked. Whatever it had hit, the damage couldn’t be that severe; they’d hardly jostled.

“Sir, the shock wave generator-”

Turning his helm to the glass panels behind him that looked out into space, Blackout took note of the obvious pieces of the radial dish floating ominously out. Pieces of scrap metal scorched and twisted came flying from the rear direction of the vessel, giving a soft ‘ping’ as they hit glass.

That idea was scrapped.

“The crew in the maintenance chamber?” he asked quietly.

“Safe sir; they just reported in that the energy dropped to zero.”

Obviously.

“Have our flight team meet me in the docking bay,” Blackout rumbled in thick baritone. “I want every able-bodied bot on this ship issued with a weapon. Tell the team in charge of the photon blasters to give ‘em all they got. Taking out their weapons systems and assisting bots outside the ship is priority, thrusters are secondary. Comm the medic and make sure she has her med-bay prepped. First Lieutenant, take command of the command console and keep everyone updated.”

Waiting a moment for his orders to sink in, Blackout also added on in a perhaps somewhat disgruntled tone, “And do not release command to Neutroboost if he comes on the brig, that’s an order.”

A very enthusiastic ‘aye sir’ came from everyone in the room. Maybe a little too over enthusiastic and relieved.

Striding down the two steps that separated him from the rest of the room, Blackout briskly marched to the door and headed down the hallway. Some bots were running by as he passed; going up and down the corridor. It was chaotic organization. As the dark armored mech glanced at those going by, they hardly seemed to notice him. Fierce optics, grim expressions, poised and looking forward.

It gave him faith.

Giving himself the briefest detour, Blackout swiftly hit the upper deck first. Primus it was unprofessional, but he had to.

Novastrike and the other recruits who had been in the training room were all assembling and hanging out weaponry as he stepped in. The little femme was barking out orders to the rest of the crew to keep everyone in control, checking over who was taking what and passing which item to whom.

She turned her optics to Blackout as he entered. There was a glint of terror that momentarily moved in her vision and out.

Saying something to the bot nearest to her, the femme gave a nod in response. Novastrike bounded over to him, light on her pedes as she ran over.

“We’ve got everything under control here, commander,” she reported.

“I can see this,” Blackout coolly answered. His optics moved around the room and back to Nova as he softly whispered, “I’ll be going out of the Rising Star to provide cover and keep them off our afts. Stay safe.”

The same look of terror returned to her optics again and she stiffened. Her tail went rigid as panic locked her armor up.

“Outside of the ship?” she whispered faintly. “But... but the last time- last time you left a ship remember what happened-”

“This isn’t the Nemesis,” Blackout gently reminded her. “I know you wouldn’t leave me behind. No bot here would; well, most bots. I’ll be careful. You do the same, alright?”

She gave a small nod. Some of the fear leaked out of her frame, but he could still read the tension in how she wrung her servos and the dread in her too-bright optics.

Reaching out, the small femme ran her servo lightly over his leg, brushing his armor as she craned her helm back to look up at him. “Come back in one piece,” she urged.

“I was planning on it,” he teased lightly with a faint grin. “I won’t be leaving you alone, don’t worry.”

Novastrike quirked her lip up slightly and turned. Her tail lightly whacked his leg as she ran back to rejoin her post and help dispense artillery.

Shifting his optics, Blackout’s smile disappeared as he spotted Scorponok approaching. He inclined his helm towards Novastrike as the bug stopped in front of him.

“Stay here,” he growled quietly. “Protect her if anybot boards the vessel. Keep the rogues safe.”

The scorpion clicked in response, nodding his helm.

Pivoting, Blackout hurried down and towards the hatch area. Just as predicted, all the fliers on board the ship were already waiting for patiently as he arrived.

“Hey boss bot.”

“Commander.”

“Sir.”

“Commander Blackout.”

Flicking his servo to settle the crowd, Blackout stepped inside the bay. The door behind him sealed shut with a click and his pedes were heavy upon the floor. The air surrounding Blackout was nothing short of dominating. Optics flaring with courage and an otherwise calm and collected look about him. There were no emotions in surrounding him; a blank slate save for the brave, strong vibes that ebbed off him more than usual.

“I’m going to make this short and simple,” Blackout spoke up in a clear tone. “Anybot who doesn’t wish to throw themselves in the line of immediate and intense firepower may leave immediately. However if you stay, I expect you to go fetch a weapon and take point either at either the docking station, hatch bay, or command center. Those are going to be likely first targets of entry and attack made by Stormstalker and his crew.”

“I can’t promise anybot on or off this ship their life. But we need to stand together if we’re going to have a chance at any of us making it out online.”

Growing quiet, Blackout waited. He expected bots to leave. It wasn’t bad to be a coward; cowards go to survive another day, and these were not mechs and femmes born and bred for war. They did not ask for this. They only wanted to exist without conflict.

No bot moved, save for the slight shuffle of pedes or servo raised to a faceplate to give an awkward cough of their vents.

“Good speech sir,” a femme commented.

“I don’t think anybot’s leaving, sir,” remarked a mech humorously.

A quick grin flashed across Blackout’s features. Primus, if this choice had been handed out to a Decepticon some were likely to leave and the others would already be ripping out of the hatchbay door like lunatics spouting out curses and battle cries as they hoped to get their frames splattered with energon. This was a nice change. Bots who listened, respected, and maybe the most important objective of all, weren’t in it for the fame or glory.

The door to the room clicked open and the smile evaporated from the ebony mech’s faceplate. He could have sworn all the fliers were accounted for, he thought while turning to the door.

Neutroboost stood in the doorway defiantly, his chin raised.

“What are you doing?!” he declared angrily. “Are you seriously deploying a team outside the Rising Star to fight your battles?”

“My battles?” Blackout snarled with confusion. “For Primus’ sake Neutroboost, keep your nonsense to yourself for once, would you?”

“They’re your friends out there, or were your friends,” the other commander pointed out frantically. “And here you are, sentencing us to death.”

Blackout stared blankly at the mech. No bot could truly be this dense. There was no way he was this stupid. It just couldn’t be possible. He was hallucinating, or maybe this was a crazy dream. Seriously he could wake up now, this couldn’t be real.

“Are you joking right now?” he growled.

“We’re not equipped to fight these bots you slagger! We should be running away, or at the very least, keeping all the servos we can on the ship to defend it!” As he continued ranting, Neutroboost strode towards him.

A few of the fliers and seekers moved to bunch closer to Blackout as if to defend him but he motioned with their servos for them to step aside. They gave a quick look between Neutroboost’s raging expression and the eerie quiet that came from Blackout. He was simmering. Ripples of energy warped around him like a star, ready to go supernova. Without word, they moved aside to let Neutro through.

He was up in Blackout’s chassis in a few more smug strides. The foolish small mech had to lean his helm back to so much as make optic contact for him though, so it wasn’t much of an impressive standoff.

“You better take a step back, Neutroboost, before I make you step back.”

“Are you threatening me now?”

“No, but I can if you’d prefer.”

“You better call off your little strike team.”

“And what are you going to do about it if I don’t?”

Raising an arm, the mech’s servo moved close to Blackout’s faceplate. He didn’t think twice, flexing his arm and bending the smaller mech’s arm back as he gripped his wrist.

“Don’t touch me,” Blackout rumbled; his voice menacing and promising violence.

“Let go of my servo,” Neutroboost howled, tugging on his arm as he leaned back.

“Fine,” Blackout grunted with satisfaction, waiting until the pathetic mech was pulling backwards until he let go. Neutroboost stumbled back but didn’t fall. Shame.

Whipping his helm around, the smaller commanding officer made optic contact with as many of the bots in the room as he could. Most were quick to look away, but those that stared back at him either gave a tiny shake of their helms or offered sneers and glares of repulsion.

“Don’t you see what he’s doing?” Neutro demanded, throwing his arms down at his side. “Do none of you see the danger he’s putting you in?”

“We’re going of our own free will, Neutroboost,” a mech commented.

“Is that what he’s making you think?”

Turning back towards Blackout, Neutroboost raised a digit towards him. That disgusting, vile, arrogant look reappeared in his optics as he conceitedly raised his optic ridges and straightened his posture.

“Just you wait until Guard hears about this,” he threatened, taking a step backwards. “Just you wait.”

Everyone watched as Neutroboost walked backwards to the door. He had some trouble reaching back for the control button for the door, but finally managed to hit it and walk through to the other side. Well, after clipping his backside against the frame of the doorway.

“He realizes it’s safer if he just turned around and walked normally, right?” a femme suggested.

A few bots chuckled in the room.

“He does also realize Blackout is a commanding officer. He has clearance to do what he wants. And Guard’s way more likely to agree with Blackout’s orders than Neutroboost’s.”

One of the mechs closer to Blackout turned towards him and shrugged. “I’d rather be following you any day than that insane mech. He’s losing touch with reality.”

A waning smile shone on Blackout’s faceplate gratefully as he inclined his helm. At the same time, a slight shudder went over the Rising Star. His audios picked up on the sound of the photon blasters going off, and the warping sound of an energy weapon loading and reloading as well as what sounded like some sort of cannon-fire from the Revenge II.

“Alright,” Blackout spoke up loudly, “Now that that’s over with, everybot gather around. Here’s what we’re going to do.”
