LAST ACTIVITY IN THE DYING BRAIN

A new study shows that as the brain dies intense experiences akin to dreams or visons are generated by the brain. This is based on the study of patients dying from cardiac arrest in hospital. The brain generates gamma waves and the memory areas and visual areas of the brain are lit up like the Vegas strip for from thirty seconds ro several minutes.

"The study involved four comatose patients who had heart attacks. Shortly after patients' ventilators were removed, two of the monitored brains showed surges in gamma waves associated with organized activity patterns in different parts of the brain. In the temporoparietal junction, a region already known to be active in out-of-body experiences and dreams, the gamma wave activity was particularly intense. Unfortunately, since all the patients in the study ultimately died, it's still not clear whether the surges represented truly conscious experience." (source Newser)

Medical researchers believe that it is this experience that accounts for the "Near Death Experiences" or "NDF" that people experience, This is the proverbial "life flashing before my eyes" experience. Interestinglyy, another study cited shows the same patterj in mice and other mammals. This suggests that it is somehow selected for by evolution but why? What evolutionary benefit could this surge of light and memory serve? Religious people contend that this is the soul preparing to leap from the body,

Melanie, a folk singer who performed at Woodstock in 1969—solo and petrified—before having major pop hits with "Brand New Key" and "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," has died. The singer whose full name was Melanie Safka was 76. "She was one of the most talented, strong and passionate women of the era," her family said in a statement, "and every word she wrote, every note she sang reflected that." In a message to the singer's fans, Variety reports, her children asked that, at 10pm Central time on Wednesday, "each of you lights a candle in honor of Melanie."

She was a regular in the New York folk clubs, per the New York Times, but unknown nationally when she was helicoptered in to take the stage with her guitar at the Woodstock Festival in upstate New York. She was nervous from the start about performing before hundreds of thousands of people who also were seeing Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix, and the Who. She was 22, one of three women scheduled to perform solo at the festival. "The terror kept building in me," she later told the AP. When the weather changed, she expected the event to be called off. "It's raining, I'm free, I'll go back to life as it was," Melanie thought to herself. "Maybe I will be an archaeologist; maybe I will join the Peace Corps. That's when they said, 'You're next.'" She emerged as one of the surprise stars of Woodstock.

Seeing people at Woodstock light candles as it rained inspired her first pop hit, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," a gospel-flavored song recorded with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Others hits included "What Have They Done to My Song, Ma"—which she reprised in a duet with Miley Cyrus in 2015—and "Peace Will Come," per the Hollywood Reporter. She wrote "Brand New Key" in 15 minutes. "I thought it was cute, a kind of old '30s tune," she said. But while some listeners heard a children's tune, others heard sexual innuendo-packed lyrics, per Variety. "I guess a key and a lock have always been Freudian symbols," Melanie said, "and pretty obvious ones at that." She worked on her 32nd album in the studio earlier this month, her label said.

Norway's Birgitte Kallestad Dies of Rabies 2 Months After Handling Stray Puppy in Philippines

(Newser) – What should have been a feel-good story has since turned tragic. The BBC reports on the turn of events that started in the Philippines in February, where 24-year-old Birgitte Kallestad was on vacation with friends. Per a statement given to the Daily Mail, via the New York Post, Kallestad and her pals were zipping around on mopeds when they spotted a stray puppy on the side of the road. Kallestad put the dog in her bike basket and the group went back to their resort. They all bathed and played with the puppy, which gave its new friends small bites and scratches during their playtime. Kallestad, who works at a Norwegian hospital, cleaned up her own tiny wounds but didn’t think she needed any other medical help. That proved to be a fatal mistake.

Soon after Kallestad returned home she started feeling ill, but she didn’t tie it to her puppy interaction, and during multiple visits to the hospital, doctors weren’t initially thinking rabies—until she was sick enough to be admitted full time at the Forde hospital where she worked. A physician finally suspected rabies, and tests confirmed Kallestad had the disease on Saturday. It was too late: She died Monday, eight days after she’d been admitted. It’s the first rabies-related death in Norway in more than 200 years. Even though many countries are on a list that recommends tourists get rabies vaccines before visiting, the Philippines wasn’t on it, and Kallestad’s family is now trying to change that. “If we manage to achieve this, the death of our sunbeam can save others,” a family rep says. Fatima Ali, ‘Top Chef’ fan favorite, dies at 29 from rare bone cancer

A fan favorite from “Top Chef” has died Friday at age 29 of a rare form of bone cancer.

Fatima Ali told the world in October in a poignant essay that she had less than a year to live because her Ewing’s Sarcoma had returned. It was particularly devastating because Ali had been “technically cancer-free” just a few months earlier, following surgery.

Ali appeared on Season 15 of the popular Bravo show, and while she didn’t win, she was voted “fan favorite” that season, reports People. She was known for her “fun personality and excellent cooking” of food from her native Pakistan, Bravo said.

We are deeply saddened to hear the news that Fatima Ali lost her courageous battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with her family at this time. People not only fell in love with her cooking, but fell in love with her personality and heart.

“We are deeply saddened to share the news that Fatima Ali has lost her courageous battle with cancer,” said a Bravo statement, per USA Today. “Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.”

Her fellow “Top Chef” contestants posted tributes to Ali on Friday. They included chef Bruce Kalman, who wrote, “I will miss you Fati, and you will be in my heart forever. I’ll always remember the great times we had.”

Ali left her native Pakistan at 18 to become a student at the Culinary Institute of America in New York and hoped to open her own restaurant someday.

“I dream of my future restaurant, where the kebabs melt against your tongue and the cocktails are just sweet enough to calm the burn,” she wrote on Healthyish in May 2018. “I have never felt more fulfilled than when I let myself crawl into bed late night after a back-breaking day of cooking.”

Two weeks ago, she posted a health update on Instagram, asking for prayers.

“I thank you a million times over for when you have given me joy,” she told her fans.
