one of the hardest books i have ever read was dictatorland by paul kenyon. basically, it's a book covering the rise of a number of infamous african dictators. after you read the first few sections and have learnt about the lives of a few of these dictators, you start to learn the pattern. they get involved in a resistance movement, usually against their colonial oppressors, they rise through the ranks of the resistance and are generally doing really good work. eventually, their country is freed and they become the leader of the country. everything looks great. but then the power gets to them and they start screwing over their countries in so many ways, just so they can get rich.
once you learn the pattern, the book becomes so much harder to get through. as you read the remaining sections, you read about more men who are fighting such noble causes and you root for them. but then you have to continually remind yourself that this man, who seems like the exact thing that this movement needs, will turn out to do horrible things. he will defraud his country; he will turn to corruption and bribery. all this hope that you had for this man and the resistance movement, even though you still recognise how absolutely necessary the movement is, gets destroyed.
i don't know what the conclusion is here, because hope is still needed and a fundamental part of any movement. but it's easy to see how people lose hope in any positive change happening when they've seen awful results of something that initially seemed so positive.

Funny you should say that about the French/Viet Nam because something like that really did happen! French African colonies had direct representation in the French Parliament (on and off) since 1792 on egalitarian grounds, and in the early 20th C French African representatives allied with the communist party (who supported them on socialist internationalist grounds) to form quite a significant voting bloc. It was a lil awkward though because iirc many of the African reps were (liberal?) wealthy landowners.
Paul Kenyon goes into it in his book Dictatorland which is fairly even-handed and worth a read.
liberty! equality! fraternity! awkward political coalitions! tits! an unreasonable belief in the superiority of the local bread! religious discrimination! nasal vowels!

you ever think abt odo’s entire, like, character progression and get sad
cos like we could have had such a meaningful story abt friendship and love, where he learns what his people are and makes the decision to stay because of his FAMILY, his NEW family of solids, who are nothing like him but accept him anyway? instead of his old family who threw him out into the world defenceless, who are made of the same thing as him and could understand him, but have values so different and incompatible with his own?
but like instead we get ‘morally he abhors what theyre doing but like, if it werent for this one chick who friendzoned him hed abandon everyone hes ever known and peace out to goo dictatorland’
we could have explored how his experiences with sisko and kira and the rest of the ops crew shaped his moral foundation, and how much they all care for him despite how completely different he is from them on a fundamental level, and the hard work and missteps as they try to understand him anyway, and told a story about how he’s found true acceptance, here, instead of with people like him, who would try and change his personality to be like theirs!! and we could have REALLY done some character studies. and he could have shapeshifted way more especially as the series went on as a show of trust like i know its a whole cg issue but guyyyyyys its like one of the coolest alien things
and WHY did they make linking a SEX THING

Dictatorland: The Men Who Stole Africa by Paul Kenyon
The dictator who grew so rich on his country's cocoa crop that he built a 35-storey-high basilica in the jungles of the Ivory Coast. The austere, incorruptible leader who has shut Eritrea off from the world in a permanent state of war and conscripted every adult into the armed forces. In Equatorial Guinea, the paranoid despot who thought Hitler was the saviour of Africa and waged a relentless campaign of terror against his own people. The Libyan army officer who authored a new work of political philosophy, The Green Book, and lived in a tent with a harem of female soldiers, running his country like a mafia family business. And behind these almost incredible stories of fantastic violence and excess lie the dark secrets of Western greed and complicity, the insatiable taste for chocolate, oil, diamonds and gold that has encouraged dictators to rule with an iron hand, siphoning off their share of the action into mansions in Paris and banks in Zurich and keeping their people in dire poverty. What’s on BBC iPlayer? Doctor Who, Dictatorland and the start of the seasonal specials
The BBC iPlayer is the gift that just keeps on giving. We are still watching and loving triumphant return of Doctor Who, but there are plenty of little gems elsewhere. from DDigits WP Feed 2 https://ift.tt/2TodKpk via IFTTT
