hiiiii! i'm kat (she/her) and this is my son wooseok!
i'm super excited to be here and really looking forward to plotting!!
i will probably be faster to reply on disc (thegongoozler) but tumblr ims are fine too if you prefer. you can find his about here. i'm still working on his bio, but it's in a sort of bulleted form here for a basic timeline!
y'all know the drill. infodump and potential plots under the cut!
wooseok was born in new york city and lived there until he was about 12, so he's fluent in english as well as korean (his parents raised him speaking both).
wooseok is an only child, and as such, his parents were always heavily involved in his business, for better or for worse. (usually for worse)
he's still kinda scared of his dad but that's another story.
as far as they know, he's just doing a single program for comp sci, but he picked up the dual degree for music theory ... haha oops
follow your passions, kid (he feels very guilty for lying.)
wooseok's power is telepathy, it manifests for him in two ways: hearing others' thoughts and memory viewing
hearing others' thoughts happens automatically (when he doesn't have a patch), and can very quickly get overwhelming
as such, wooseok likes to keep the patch on as much as possible. it's really hard to enter a room and hear like 20 people as if they're talking aloud
"hey wooseok, you ok?" "I Can't Hear You" (the room is silent)
he's trying to get better at dealing with it/tuning some voices out, because he knows using the patch as often as he does isn't safe. when he really focuses, he can sometimes get them to quiet to a manageable level, but it never completely goes away, and it takes a lot of brainpower.
he doesn't know this for sure, but practice does make perfect in this case! come, be his friend, help him grow! make him practice instead of just hiding!
so the first time he used a patch was like the first time he experienced silence and he's still chasing that high
the secondary application of his telepathy--the memory viewing--is more of an ordeal. it requires sustained physical contact, is very tiring, etc
for subplot, he's the treasurer for together for daehan! realistically, his thoughts/opinions fall somewhere between the two groups, but he's been in this position for a while and... he doesn't like change.

he can sometimes come across as standoffish though because when that patch starts to run out he has a short period of time before things get too overwhelming (or he's just focusing really hard on keeping others quiet)

Q&A: For Fiction, There's No Superior Fighting Style
slutside-out said to howtofightwrite: Are there any fighting styles that are vastly superior to others? In other words where one personâs very skilled in one form of fighting but would just be completely outclassed by someone whoâs skilled in another form. Iâm writing a story and thereâs a scene where one of the best hand to hand fighters in the group is just completely ruined by an assassin sent after him.
âSuperior Fighting Styleâ questions are one of those which can easily devolve into fanwank. (See: katana fans.) Basically, contextualize this question as any of the loaded questions you would avoid asking about like âwho is the showâs best character?â or saying âthis couple is perfect and all other pairings are trashâ when discussing your favorite television show. Expect heated debate with some (or no) validity, littered with good points and many inaccuracies, that eventually devolve into ALL CAPS yelling on some distant forum board.
There is no vastly superior martial art. The military martial combat forms are kept on the cutting edge for warfare in the modern world. They could (depending on definition) be considered âthe bestâ. (Even so, youâll still be getting into arguments about various Armed Services divisions about who is the most effective, like SEALS versus Army Rangers versus Force Recon versus Delta versus the Green Berets, etc. Thatâs before we start comparing different countries.) However, these martial arts are superior because they have been adapted to serve in the current environment and not because they are all the best all the time. There are plenty of other martial arts which will work better as a reference point for the character and their outlook. There are a lot of martial arts and martial combat forms with stellar reputations. Thereâs no unified consensus.
The superiority answer will change depending on who you talk to, and usually theyâre overlooking some crucial detail the other martial art theyâre degrading offers. Youâll get a flavor of the month answer like Krav Maga, Silat, Ninjutsu, Muay Thai, which is a disservice to the others like Hapkido, JiuJutsu, Judo, Taekwondo, Sambo, Northern Shaolin, Eskrima, Capoeira, and thousands of others. Taekwondo gets derided a lot by Mixed Martial Arts fans for its popularity, but the truth is that when it works, it really works.
Ultimately, mindset makes the warrior. The answer is never in the secret techniques but in the skill of the individual who wields them and their ability to face the unknown.
Iâm pointing this out because Iâve seen a lot of writers fall into the secret or superior martial arts trap. Thereâs an initial urge to ask for the best fighting style for a specific body type or the best weapon for a character to use thatâll give them some sort of statistical advantage. The practical answer of whatever works best for you is a freeing one, but not usually helpful when youâre in a state of not knowing where to turn. You have to start somewhere.
So, where do you begin?
Start with this: your audience will judge your character based on their ability to act in keeping with their profession.
âThereâs no different angle, no clever solution, no trickety-trick thatâs going to move that rock. Youâve got to face it head on.â â Avatar: The Last Airbender
The application in the above quote is that only you as the author can prove your characterâs bona fides and establish them by their actions. The martial art theyâre using doesnât matter. The martial art and knowledge of it is a reference point for you while you construct your fight sequence. As a writer, you donât have to worry about visual accuracy. You need to provide enough direction for your audience to imagine the scenario. Understanding practical application and theory will take you far, even if you donât have the option to take up a martial art yourself.
So, pick what you like. Go on YouTube and follow different martial arts professionals who discuss practical application, thereâs a lot of good short videos from professionals in the self-defense field. Lots of martial arts specialists in various fields post videos both of techniques and discussing them in comparison to whatâs shown in movies and television. The Black Belt Magazineâs YouTube Channel will introduce you to a lot of professionals in various fields from self-defense experts to martial arts masters.
What youâre doing here is performing a classic narrative beat where you establish the danger presented by a new antagonist through their sound beating of the teamâs strongest member.
Hereâs a quick list of things to keep in mind:
1) Strategy and Tactics: Plain Clothes Ambush
While the Assassin Archetype fits a wide array of combat backgrounds and ideologies, they are usually portrayed as being underhanded and ruthlessly efficient. The group coordinating and working together is the Assassinâs biggest threat, not the technical skills of a single group member. The best way to impact squad morale is to first remove the one who is perceived as the toughest. The strategy is sound, you take down your biggest single combat threat (especially when supported by the others) and freak the squad out. The best hand to hand fighter might be viewed as their linchpin. Group cohesion fractures, they stop working together, they start panicking, and they scatter. Itâs much easier to target or fight individuals one on one, if it becomes necessary.
Remember, assassins arenât warriors. They donât prefer fisticuffs. They like weapons. They strive for single strikes in planned ambushes from a previously scouted area where they know their target will be.
For maximum effect, this assassin starts with a walk-up ambush and doesnât give the âbest fighterâ the opportunity to even fight back.
2) The Skill Factor: A Killerâs Instinct
For the sake of narrative, you want to establish that his assassin beats the groupâs best fighter because theyâre better. The assassin beats the groupâs best fighter because theyâre more experienced, theyâve seen a wider range of fighting styles and can derive better counters as a result.
Iâm not going to ask why this Assassin is fighting with fisticuffs or going in hand to hand as opposed to carrying a concealable weapon like a knife or if this best hand to hand fighter survives.
It can be a huge blow to the Assassinâs credibility in their introduction (especially a violent one) if you donât let them kill. Killing their assigned target is their job, sure, but a dead witness is better than a live one and can muddy the waters of an investigation. Assassins are professional killers and, unlike other combat professionals, their credibility is defined by the bodies.
Film usually introduces an assassin finishing a prior job (effectively killing someone the audience doesnât care about) to establish their skill and credibility. In your novel, you canât rely on hearsay.
You might want to consider driving the point home by feeding one of your characters to them. (This âbest fighterâ character, for example.)
3) Cost & Benefit Analysis: Death is Better
In every engagement, your combat oriented characters will be running a cost versus benefit analysis both before they go in and also during the battle itself. This asks if the risk of engagement is cost-effective for their goals, and if they do engage what they need to do in order to both win and undercut any potential fallout.
Cost = the energy and resources expended to achieve victory.
Benefit = what they get from fighting with or removing this individual.
Risk = the risk of injury, and other immediate dangers the engagement presents.
Fallout = this is the negative results. Alerting law enforcement to their presence, making the achievement of their overall goal more difficult. Fallout can come from the noise of the fight, the number of witnesses, accessible cameras, having nowhere to dump the body, etc.
Death removes the possibility of witnesses, making it more difficult to identify them. Death means they wonât have to deal with the same skilled combatant again, which benefits them. If the skilled combatant is dead, they canât provide insights into the assassinâs methodology, fighting style, or strategies; keeping any others trying to protect their target in the dark. An assassin doesnât want their target afraid, they want them complacent. If their target is aware of a threat, they donât want them to know they are the threat. You canât build an effective strategy for countering the unknown.
For an assassin, if they are forced into situation where they have to fight at all, killing their opponent is the best outcome. Assassins generally view bystanders as ambulatory obstacles in the way of their target instead of as people, making it easier to kill them.
However, assassins prefer not to kill anyone but their target. That is the path of least resistance and the one which is most beneficial to their future. Their goal is to complete their mission, escape undetected, and leave no evidence that they were the ones who killed the target. They want to retain their anonymity because anonymity is necessary to do their job. Their target is their goal, any cost/benefit analysis be calculated around the death of their target, and adjust based on how their actions impact those chances.
4) The Number of Moves: 1 to 3
In the world of film fight scene choreography (and real life), you signal one fighter is better than the other through the length of the fight. For maximum impact in a complete shut out, the fight part of the scene will last about a few sentences. âGetting wreckedâ translates into your groupâs best fighter being taken down in one to three moves. The three is part of the opening combination, rather than retaliatory. 1) Destabilizing strike, 2) Follow-up hits somewhere more devastating/sensitive, 3) Last hit (usually with the opening strikeâs hand) is the due final diligence to make sure they donât come back/puts them out of the fight.
For killing blows, this is 1) destabilize on the exterior/hit somewhere vital, 2) finishing kill/an even more vital place, 3) making sure theyâre dead/another vital place.
You can do this with a knife in simple combination:
Make a forward approach with the knife hidden by the bodyâs profile or the arm.
When in range, slash on an upward diagonal across the throat.
Rotate the knife (if the knife is in a forward position, not necessary if the knife is already in an icepick grip), and come back in to puncture the carotid with blade tip.
Knife through the back of the neck as you move past, severing the spinal column.
They collapse, dying. On to the next.
This is a simple combination which makes use of the bladeâs position in the hand (the ice pick grip). You distract them with the first injury (slash) which likely landed painful but superficial injuries, to strike the vital point (the artery) ensuring a fast bleed out, and the final blade strike through the spine paralyzes their entire body. Paralyzing them ensures they cannot staunch the blood flow to buy themselves time. They have no choice but to lie there and bleed out. This strategy also benefits the attacker because the more emotional and less experienced members of the group might break to protect their friend.
This is also just one potential option, thereâs a wide array of possibilities when ambushing or striking with a variety of hand to hand techniques/weapons.
The only problem with this scenario and approach is that if the assassinâs target isnât the squad itself but a single member or someone theyâre protecting then attacking head on doesnât really benefit them. A competent group will sacrifice one or two soldiers upfront to stop the assassin, while they hustle the target to safety. Bodyguards always prioritize their protectees over stopping the assassin. Attacking this way, in clear view, the assassin reduces their chances of completing the job.
When setting up this scene, keep the assassinâs goals in mind. It can be easy to try and structure a fight scene around what you want to happen, but always make sure the character motivations are backing that up. If youâre imagining a Byung Hun Lee type assassin from R.E.D. 2. (By the by, thatâs Taekwondo.) Or John Wick, both are the typical Hollywood badass assassins. (The first John Wick film is notable for its use of modern shooting techniques like CAR. (Center Axis Relock), itâs worth looking at if you want to write gunfights.) Or like Lucy Lawless in the Burn Notice episode False Flag, you want to watch the full 16 minute clip or the full episode for even more good tradecraft to build off of. This episode centers around what you can expect when dealing with an assassin in the real world, the tactics and techniques they use, along with how to counter them. Another really good example of an assassin hewing closer to what youâd find in the real word is Vincent from Collateral. (Michael Mannâs films are also really good examples of professional shooting.)
I really recommend watching the False Flag episode and Collateral even if youâre planning to go with a Hollywood badass assassin.
Be honest with yourself about the type of narrative you want to write and the violence youâre looking at implementing in your novel. Honesty goes a long way toward narrowing your search. There are a lot of different approaches which are valid, whatâs most important is finding the kind which interests you and then learning the applicable practical theories.

Investigation 13: Elasticity â Danjuro Tobita
Itâs almost the Christmas holidays as I write this, as well as being exactly halfway through December. Hopefully during the holidays we can catch back up to schedule, so this should be the last upload that isnât on time. Letâs not dwell on it. Shall we?
Danjuro Tobita, better known as Gentle Criminal, has the quirk of elasticity. This allows him to make anything he touches elastic (in the sense of property, rather than material). I only learned when researching this quirk that his name is in fact a pun of the quirk in Japanese, where the standard Japanese kanji for âelasticityâ also translates as âgentlemanâ. This has nothing to do with the investigation, I just thought it was a cool fact.
The first problem we run into is that elasticity isnât a set property at the molecular level. Different materials are elastic for different reasons, mostly due to the different ways the atoms and molecules within the substance are bonded together. For example, rubber is elastic because of its complex interlinked polymers that align when stretched. Most other substances deform elastically due to uniform deformation of their atomic structure. Which brings us to our second problemâŚ
Nothing is perfectly elastic. Rubber and other elastomers are âelasticâ up to a point (around 10x their original length), but other materials can only deform slightly before they become plastic. Plasticity, in opposition to elasticity, is the property of a substance that retains its new shape when deformed, while elastic materials return to their original shape.
These two factors together make the effects of Gentleâs quirk highly irregular. To explain them, we first have to look at elasticity in more depth. So-called âperfect elasticityâ is described by Hookeâs Law, which states the force required to stretch or extend a material is directly proportional to the distance it is to be stretched or extended. This means to compress a spring to a quarter its length, one must apply twice the force required to halve its length, and so forth. This is (practically) true for all materials to a point. After that point, known as the yield point, the material stops being perfectly elastic, and begins deforming plastically. There are other stages between this and the material breaking, but these are unnecessary to discuss since no material that has been affected by the quirk has ever reached its yield point.
Letâs begin, as always, with the largest use of the quirk, here being the material that underwent the largest force and still remained elastic. The answer would of course be the air trampolines that redirected Izukuâs pellet of air[1], but the physics behind this interaction is possibly the most gratuitous and bloody murder of sense in the anime. I usually shy away from criticising the anime on its science, primarily because itâs a work of fiction about superheroes, but also because its purpose is a source of entertainment, and I bring the burden of applying science to it upon myself. In this instance however, I am allowing myself a small fracture in my usual composure to discuss why this scene is absolutely nonsensical.
Firstly, Izuku cannot create a bullet of air. To flick his finger is to create a pressure wave that spreads out from the point of creation at the speed of sound. No faster, no slower. If the finger is to move at a supersonic speed, the resultant pressure wave would create a sonic boom, and still travel at only the speed of light, still in a dissipating wave. Due to the properties of waves, their amplitude decreases with the square of the distance from the source. Thus Dekuâs blast wave would not need aiming, and would also be barely a light breeze at such a distance as it is used.
Additionally, and most grievously, Gentle cannot create trampolines of air in the air. This is for the simple (yet often misquoted) fact of Newtonâs Third Law. The classic, profound, smart-guy quip version is âevery action has an equal opposite reactionâ, but this is most likely only because the full answer is far more bloated. The law is in fact âwhen body A exerts a force on body B, body B exerts a force on body A that is of equal magnitude, opposite direction, identical type, and in the same line, as the force of body A on body Bâ. Quite a mouthful, but thereâs a lot of subtle and important detail missing from the first, Iâm sure youâll agree. The problem here is that the created trampoline must exert a large force of Gentle to cause such acceleration (see Newtonâs Second Law of Motion), and thus Gentle exerts a force on the trampoline, that causes an accelerate in the same proportion to the acceleration of Gentle as the ratios of their respective masses. Since air is a lot less dense than Gentle, and his quirk does not appear to add mass to a system, the trampoline would be accelerated backwards considerably fast before Gentle could gain any significant acceleration. It would be like trying to push yourself backwards by punching a balloon. Sure, the balloon is elastic, but it does not have enough mass to exert the required force. The only way this could work is if the trampolines were connected to the earth (thus the mass of the system is increased), but the only way this could occur is via more elasticated air. This does not happen because a) it is not seen â the elasticated air becomes slightly opaque (possibly a stylistic effect to show the action of the quirk) and there are no opaque structures visible, just a single floating disc, and b) these structures would be elasticated, and thus the system would be too flexible to exert such force over such distance.
Right, after that little rant, lets get back to the matter at hand. During the fight with Gentle and Deku there is a scene within a construction site that gives a lot of valuable information. This comes in the form of gratuitous quirk use, as well as an explicit statement of the quirkâs features: it cannot be turned off at will, and instead fades over time. This is odd when compared to almost all other quirks (if you need any examples, every other quirk investigated save one can be both activated and deactivated at will) and so it is likely it ties into the mechanism of the quirkâs action.
The scene contains two key uses of elasticity. Firstly, multiple steel girders are made elastic, and secondly a crane arm is made elastic. The former is useful because it is used by Gentle for movement, so the force on it and thus a lower limit for the yield point can be garnered. The second is useful because it showcases the flexibility of elasticated materials by how much the crane arm bends.
The steel beam bends about 1m each side of its equilibrium, which seems to be relatively unaffected by the quirk. The beam seems around 10m long, but thankfully the beams look like Universal Beams, which have standardised measurements including each typeâs flange thickness, root radius, and most importantly, mass by metre and elastic modulus in each axis. Unfortunately there are almost 100 types, each of subtly different dimensions and properties. After downloading a spreadsheet and sifting through all types, I can confidently say the distinction does not matter, as the differences are all within the margin of error that arises upon attempts to measure the on-screen girder.
Letâs start with some maths. Thereâs no escaping it, and this time itâs back with a vengeance. Assuming the girder bends to approximate an arc (a section of a circleâs circumference) we can use some geometry to figure out the length of the original and stretched girders, and thus how much longer the latter is than the former. The unstretched we already know is around 10m long, and the centre bends ~1.5m from equilibrium. Since the ends are fixed, we know the chord subtending the arc is 10m long, and the distance bent (1.5m) is the distance between the arc and the centre of the chord. I wonât bore you with the details, but it turns out that the steel only increases length by 60cm, or one 60th its original length.
There isnât much clear data on how elastic metals are (illustrated by the fact that a cursory search of âhow far do metals stretchâ gets 10 results in before some very different and nsfw questions come up instead, no points for guessing what they are) but there is an incredibly useful dataset courtesy of engineering toolbox, containing the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength or Youngâs Modulus of almost every material you can think of. Iâm not sure which engineer would need to compare the elasticity of compact and spongy bone, but Iâm sure some day Iâll be glad the entry is there. For now weâll look at the structural steel values, and thankfully all three are available. Letâs take a moment to discuss what they mean.
Youngâs Modulus is the ratio of stress against strain, and has a fixed value for each material. Stress is the force per unit of cross-sectional area applied to the material, and the strain is the stretched length sure to such stress over the original strength. Yield strength is the minimum stress required to deform the material plastically, and ultimate tensile strength is the stress required to snap the material. Structural Steel has a Youngâs Modulus of 200, so for every 200 MN of force per square metre of cross-sectional area, the beam will double in length. Sadly, these simple calculations are only applicable when the force and extension lie on the same line. In our case, the deformation is complex, non-shear, and therefore cannot be described at an angle relative to the force. In this case, we must apply the terrifyingly named Euler-Bernoulli Beam Theory. It contains some fittingly terrifying equations, included variable functions based on beam material, and second derivatives against two separate nested variables. However, in our scenario, the beam is supported at both ends (known as a simply supported beam) and weâll assume it is uniform in density, elasticity, etc. Therefore we get an equation that looks like this: Ďmax = ymax F L / (4 I) where Ďmax is maximum stress at a given point, ymax is the distance from the point to the neutral axis, F is the force applied to the centre of the beam, L is double the length of the beam, and I is the âarea moment of inertia of the cross sectionâ. I have almost no idea what that last one means, but thankfully I managed to find an equation for it given different dimensions of a symmetrical I-shaped cross-section. There are two pieces of bad news. 1, it looks like this: Iy = (a^3 h / 12) + (b^3 / 12) (H - h), and 2, we now need to play a game of universal-beam âGuess Whoâ to gain the correct dimensions.
The beam in the anime seems to be less than 500mm in depth, so that removes 47 possible types. Less than 500mm in width sadly doesnât remove any more. However, we do know the beam is roughly larger than 150mm, since it larger than Dekuâs hand span, which removes another 23. Averaging the rest gives us some dimensions we can use as an approximation of the beam. Thankfully, there exists a table of standard UK I beam dimensions and their respective area moment of inertia of the cross section. Comparing our values to the closest standard gives a value of 7440. Plugging this into the max strain equation, we find the maximum strain on the beam to be 0.79N per square metre. A strangely low number that says to me something must be wrong. The problem is we donât know the value of F, and since I just used Gentleâs weight the formula treats the beam as incredibly flexible, since it bent so much under such little load. This is a problem, only solved by using a formula involving the Youngâs Modulus E Â of the beam rather than F. Such a formula is even more complex than those already seen, and is at such a level that I cannot understand how to apply it to the above scenario. Indeed, this post is already much over its due posting date at time of writing, and we have not talked at all about the quirkâs mechanism. Beam theory being as complicated as it is, and having spent now a good few days failing to apply it, I believe it is best we approach the problem from a different angle.
Itâs safe to say the metal becomes not just more elastic, but more flexible, when the quirk takes effect. It takes a very large force to bend metal to the extent shown, and that metal would snap or at least bend plastically before that point is reached (sadly I cannot say which would occur). Therefore something about the molecular structure of the metal must change.
As previously discussed, metals and polymers bend differently at the molecular level, and this is because their very structures are different. Metal atoms bond by delocalising their outer electrons, creating positively charged ions attracted to a sea of negatively charged delocalised electrons. This is why metals shine â the electron sea is incredibly smooth, sub atomically so. Polymers bond via covalent bonds and inter-molecular bonds, creating discrete polymers that weakly attract each other. Gentleâs quirk must somehow make both these structures, and others, elastic in the same fashion.
The first answer is to weaken the inter-molecular forces within the structures, allowing polymers/molecules/any base elements to more easily move past each other within the material. Sadly, this just makes the material more ductile, which is the ease with which the material can be elongated via tensile force. To make something more elastic, the forces holing the molecules together must be made, for want of a better word, springier. Essentially, they must be able to act over a longer distance in order to pull the material back into shape after deformation. To do this simply would be to make the bonds stronger, but this would also make the material less flexible and denser. Instead, the force must somehow be spread across some distance profile, maintaining its magnitude at the standard distance of molecules from each other, but fall off slower as distance increases. The way to do this while retaining the other featured of the material is essentially fictional, and would even break thermodynamics (again) by being able to increase the Helmholtz Free Energy within a closed system. Since weâre now changing the mechanism by with one of the four fundamental forces of the universe functions, we can suppose the quirk changes the quirk in such a way ass to create perfectly elastic materials, since they already seem to have ridiculously high yield points.
Supposing this is the case, the question immediately arises â so what? The answer is that perfectly elastic materials have immense uses within many scientific circles. If a material returns to exactly the same state after deformation as it was in before, then it has the same energy. This means any object that hits it rebounds with the same kinetic energy as it started with, a phenomenon known fittingly as a perfectly elastic collision. Every other collision loses energy as heat, save for collisions that stretch the term for physics reasons, such as two orbiting objects. In our case purely elastic collisions have as many uses as elastic materials do, and possibly more. To have any material possible suddenly, even though temporarily, gain perfect elasticity will have material scientists drooling, and although I do not have the intelligence to think of any novel applications of such, asking one of them would Iâm sure give you myriad answers.
Another fun application is heat-proofing. A material becomes liquid when the inter-molecular forces are partially overcome by kinetic energy, and gasses when the forces are broken completely. Since these forces are unlimited in distance, the objects would never be able to become gaseous, and would have very high cohesion (surface tension) when liquid. Iâm again not sure of the applications of this, but it is cool nonetheless.
To conclude, Gentle Criminalâs quirk affects any material he touches, and changes the effect of the electrostatic forces within it, making them act across any distance, with a slight reduction in magnitude with distance. This works by having the force pull the molecules together from any distance, until they become close enough to be repelled by the electrostatic repulsion of the atoms. Any force applied may overcome the electrostatics for a distance, but will never cause yielding.

Front-End Developments Trends to Watch in 2022
Front-End Development hasn't always gotten the respect it deserves compared to Back-End Development.
Many engineers used to look down on JavaScript, but times have changed. Web applications are growing rapidly, mainly due to the development of open-source tools. This development has moved us farther away from jQuery and has made almost every tech company use the latest JavaScript and tools like ESLint, Babel, and Webpack.
Nowadays, the Front-End is moving at a speed that makes it hard to follow. This post is all about catching up with the directions of this development area in 2022. Perhaps you will find something for yourself in these trends.
Svelte is Gaining Popularity
Svelte is a relatively new tool, which in theory started much too late to be able to have a chance against React, Vue, and Angular. But it's steadily gaining popularity at an unprecedented pace.
In 2021, Stack Overflow Users announced it as the most loved front-end framework. But Svelte is more than that. It is a compiler that builds an optimized front end. Svelte is not imported into the application like other popular frameworks. Instead, code written in Svelte gets compiled into pure JavaScript. This allows Svelte to win in terms of speed against frameworks such as React or Vue.
Using the Svelte framework is very easy. Here is an example of how you'd use state + forms:
Simple as that! Notice three things here:
Forms are handled in a simple, elegant way, like in the old days, before the SPA frameworks. There is no need to attach onChange props to the inputs.
Markup and logic lives side by side, encapsulating the logic and a visible layer.
State is easy to manage.
No wonder the framework is gaining traction in the community. It is only a matter of time before new popular platforms are created in Svelte.
React, Vue, and Angular are here to stay!!
I started my adventure with the Front-End just before the premiere of Angular 2, about six years ago. I canât count how many times since then I have read that Vue, React, or Angular is dying.
The truth has turned out to be quite different, though. Each of these three frameworks has grown in popularity since its inception.
Here is the chart (Source: Npm Trends). It is worth adding that every sudden drop on the chart is there because of December.
Angular vs React vs Vue download trends
Take a look at the chart above. Notice that Angular has grown in popularity by a factor of over ten. React and Vue grew even faster. All three frameworks support pretty much the same use cases.
This means no matter which of the three frameworks you choose, you can expect it to be used and supported for years to come.
Itâs worth noting that React didn't have any significant changes in 2021. Yet the pace of its adaptation is astounding. It is likely because of the ecosystem around the technology. React has the largest selection of libraries and supporting frameworks.
Two examples worth mentioning are Next and Gatsby. The latter is one of the perpetrators of the next trend.
Frameworks need to support both Static and Dynamic Pages
Let's establish what Static and Dynamic Pages are in practical terms.
Dynamic Pages fetch and process the content when the user opens them. Static Pages are per-defined during the build time. They become separate, generated files on the disc. They can look just the same as dynamic, but the user's browser has less work to do.
If you have a shop, you can have a single dynamic product page, or thousands of static product pages, one for every product.
This means that Static Pages are more performant for users, but take a lot longer to build. The reason for abandoning Static Pages was the popularization of the React and Vue type Single-Page Application (SPA) Frameworks. They also restored them to favor.
Dynamic content that SPA's typically generate is much slower than a ready-to-display one written in HTML. The difference is especially big when the page is fetching data from the server. A Dynamic Page would typically have to download and process such data.
This resulted in giving birth to Static Pages in SPAs. Gatsby tackled this problem by building a framework and infrastructure for Static Pages in React.
A website like a blog, portfolio, or even a course platform like âfreeCodeCampâ will be much faster static. Even server-side rendering, as is usually the case with Next.js, does not guarantee better speed (Source: Sidney Alcantara).
Focus on time to first content paint results in a large number of solutions for generating Static Pages in other frameworks, such as Vue or Svelte.
On the other hand, Static Pages are hard to scale for millions of pages. If you are building an app with a lot of dynamic content like user profiles, you are probably better off using Dynamic Pages. Both ways of handling content are here to stay.
Platforms turn single developers into entire IT departments
Recent years have brought a flood of platforms that speed up Font-End Development. This is huge because it allows small teams to move fast.
You can easily implement video using Twilio or Agora.io. You can add authentication in no time using Firebase, Amazon Cognito or Okta (Okta also acquired Auth0).
Deploying Font-End code automatically and globally is especially worth talking about. There are three go-to solutions: Vercel, Gatsby Cloud, and Netlify. They can turn one Font-End Developer with an GitHub account into the entire DevOps Department in 5 minutes. At the moment of writing, all three platforms offer a relatively similar average loading times (Sources: Netlify vs Vercel, Netlify vs Gatsby Cloud).
Gatsby Cloud is React only but makes working with countless Static Pages almost too easy. If you are building a Gatsby app, it's probably your best bet.
Vercel supports the major frameworks, including server-side ones, like the company founders' own framework, Next.js. If you are working on a server-side rendered app, Vercel will make your life a lot easier.
Netlify focuses on client side frameworks, like pure React and Vue. It offers a wide range of useful tools such as ready-to-use forms, authentication and server-less functions. I believe it is the best choice for the traditional, client side apps.
One underdog worth mentioning is Shuffle.dev. It can create a professional website layout randomly, in seconds. It has a relatively large selection of themes and CSS frameworks and adds new features and content on a weekly basis.
Front-End Optimization is key
The Front-End has come full circle in recent years. Light sites turned into heavy platforms with long render times. Some people may still remember when Slack used the developer version of React (Source: Robert Pankowecki). The trend to make SPAs faster has been around for years but is still gaining momentum.
Libraries that negatively impact the performance, like Moment.js, are replaced by their lighter, performant counterparts such as Day.js. Others get refactored to reduce the bundle size. Examples include Material UI and Lodash.
Sentry, the market leader in error logging, only started working on bundle size optimization a few months ago. Throughout the front-end ecosystem, there is a growing emphasis on using lazy loading, rendering the front end on the server-side, or using CSS files instead of styling the application with JavaScript, as was the case with, for example, styled-components.
Tailwind has gained much popularity recently and, in 2022, it will surely remain popular. It handles reducing the application load time like almost no other CSS tool.
That being said, it has a steep learning curve. The Tailwind code is often hard to read.
I highly recommend trying Linaria too. Linaria combines the advantages of styled-components and the speed of using static CSS files.
Notice how you can use JavaScript in styles. It is also possible to reuse styles since they are regular JS constants. The code gets compiled into a CSS file during the build process.
This results in a combination of a great developer experience and a blazing-fast front-end.

SPOTLIGHT: BE the change
If youâre just joining Spotlight, then this is my personal journal of my personal journey as a performer. Itâs a kind of way for me to look back on all of my experiences, and lessons Iâve learned, while simultaneously sharing what Iâve learned with you. Disclaimer: The word PERSONAL was utilized twice in the first sentence. Therefore, this is not the gospel or the truth, itâs just me sharing MY experiences in an effort to assist, if possible, in other peopleâs discovery (end disclaimer). Today, Iâm going to begin diving back into my A+B=C method and zero in on one of âBrianâs Bâsâ (Being, Behavior, and Business), and talk about BEING.
In the song, â500 Milesâ the singer says that âheâs gonna be the kinda manâŚâ He literally tells the person to whom he is singing, what kind of man he is going to be for her (or him). Each day we have the ability to choose who we are going to be. Not just in each and every situation, but also in the world. Because as the Secret aka Law Of Attraction) reminds us, it is who we are that determines what we manifest. As I typed that I began to really âmarinateâ on that phrase. âWho we are determines what we manifest.â The statement prompted me to do some thorough and uncomfortable soul searching. You see in 2017 my life completely fell apart. At the beginning of the year I lost all my big name clients due to budget cuts, one big name client even cut budgets a second year in a row, which meant that my unemployment assistance ran out. I then I ran out of savings, and to make matters even worse, my agency (with whom I had an almost 10 year strong working relationship) shut down after 32 years of business. Often I was able to go other places to supplement my income, but even my ability to travel to places where I could make money was stripped from me. To top things off, my home life was not bearable anymore. My world literally came crashing down and I wondered how in the world I had manifested this? The answer was it was because of who I was at that time. I had allowed fear to run my life and had lived in a state of fear for too long. It just happened to get even worse around the end of 2016. So that by the beginning of 2017, I was living in a state of constant fear and continual compliance to toxic people. This in turn created negative, fear based, and toxic outcomes in my life. Itâs April of 2018, and Iâm finally beginning to get my head somewhat clear again. Iâm looking for solutions so that I can recreate, enjoy, and sustain the productive and prosperous life I had back in 2016. The solution I came up with, is that I needed to find was a savior. A superhero. An agent who could deliver me from this state of despair and hopelessness. I needed to find an Agent Of Transformation!Â
AGENT OF TRANSFORMATIONÂ
Superheroes have once again begun to dominate and inundate pop culture. Wonder Woman in particular broke all kinds of barriers by: a) being the most successful big budget action film to be directed by a woman, and b) became the highest grossing superhero origin film. Cut to one year later, and Black Panther follows suit and becomes the number 1 superhero movie of all time! I believe that it is because these two heroes in particular are âAgents Of Transformationâ. But, why? Well, first Iâll take a look at definitions for each word. First off, Websterâs Dictionary defines an agent as: 1) One that acts or exerts power, 2) something that produces or is capable of producing an effect, 3) a means or instrument by which a guiding intelligence achieves a result, and 4) one who is authorized to act for or in place of another. Next, Transformation is defined by the same source as: 1) an act, process, or instance of transforming or being transformed. To me, this translates as a person who is a catalyst and is responsible for the transformation of others. What is transformation? Eckhart Tolle says in his book Awakening to Your Lifeâs Purpose, that âyour inner purpose is to awakenâ. Therefore, I personally believe that Agents Of Transformation are those who are catalysts, and are responsible for the transformative awakening in others. Wonder Woman in particular is a powerful agent of transformation as she proposes the ideas of Love and Fair Play as a way of awakening people to compassion, objectivity, as a way to combat hate and oppression and move toward peace, equality, and love. Dr. Marston who created the character, gives many avenues and answers to how we can achieve these ideas. Many of those theories are found in the pages of Wonder Woman, and I explore a few in my upcoming article called, What Would Wonder Woman Do? about Depression - Part two.Â
MY EXPERIENCE
Two months ago, I wrote an entry for Spotlight called âWhatâs Your Mission?â. In it, I explored the importance of knowing why you do something and also talked about my relationship to being an artist. For me, being an performing artist is: the one thing I excel at, itâs one of my safest places, itâs where I feel the most self expressed, and itâs where I feel the strongest community. Some of the best experiences of my life have been on stage or on screen. In short, I am empowered when I do what I love so I feel that it is truly my calling. It is through this venue that I find my own path toward transformation. By being the best that I can be, I set the ground work for becoming an agent of transformation myself. So how can I do that?Â
MY APPLICATIONÂ
We each have a choice of how. First, I need to formulate my mission and S.M.A.R.T. plan (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) to be one that supports my endeavors to enact the life of an Agent Of Transformation (one who assists in awakening others). Since the best place which I seem to excel the most is via the performing arts, I think that is going to be my venue. Somewhere, someone once said that we are all born with gifts, and we need to utilize those gifts to contribute to the world. Since this is my gift, itâs going to be my way to contribute, and help others to awaken. Since Wonder Woman assisted me in awakening, Iâm going to let her governing principles and qualities be my guide for utilizing my gifts to help awaken others, and become another Agent Of Transformation. So, what are the qualities that I see in Wonder Woman and how can I apply them to my journey of being an A.O.T.? Well, Wonder Woman is something that has resonated with me on multiple levels. One day Iâll have to do a thorough analysis of the psychology of wonder woman and why and how her messages have resonated with me so deeply. But for brevityâs sake, Iâm just going to look at 5 things about the character:Â
She is an underdog who .Â
Her perceived weak qualities are actually her strong qualities.Â
She is governed by love.Â
Her mission in the 40s was to fight hate and oppression.Â
She utilizes a âCan Do attitudeâ and DISC (intellectual and emotional abilities) to navigate the world and achieve anything; .Â
As an underdog and marginalized person who encountered tons of hate and oppression in my life, and was constantly being told what I could NOT do, I found her message especially empowering. As I read through her adventures, specifically the first ones that were written by the psychologist who created her, I found many positive and helpful strategies to assist me in my personal awakening. Therefore, Iâm going to apply those to the performing arts and hopefully show other underdogs or downtrodden people what is possible, and deliver the message of love and fair play. Iâll probably have to concentrate the most on my independent artistic endeavors, but regardless it will be ever-present in my plan as I attempt to emulate that the best I can.Â
BEâŚDOâŚHAVE.Â
A friend of mine posted a picture on his instagram which consisted of three words (Be, Do, Have), along with a quote: âStrengthen your thoughts (Being) so you can take action (Doing) that will enable you to become financially free (Having).â - Robert T. Kiyosaki. This was essentially what The Secret calls the Law Of Attraction. Our thoughts become manifestations in the real world, and what we manifest becomes our legacy. Each of us choose what our legacy will be by the thoughts and feelings we nurture on a daily basis. We have the power to choose, as the singer of the song â500 milesâ, what kind of man (woman, or person) we are going to be every day. Hence, why I believe who we are and what we define as our mission, to be one of the most important places to start. Itâs Being and itâs the first step in what I call Brianâs Bs. For me, since Iâve decided that Iâm going to be an âAgent Of Transformationâ, I need to concentrate on who that person is, so that I can manifest what that person does. In my personal case, Iâll need to focus on being a vessel of love and fair play. This will require me to approach everything from that perspective, and keep love, compassion, objectivity, and fairness as my guiding principles. Then utilize all the tools available to me (like DISC) and surround myself with people of like mind so as to ensure I am utilizing these tools and keeping in line with these ideals with regularity. Eventually, as I walk that walk, and talk that talk, Iâll end up producing results which are the product of these ideals and commitments.Â
I invite everyone who is interested in manifesting a successful career (or anything else in life), to begin with the first of Brianâs Bs called Being. Figure out who you want to be in the world. Find out what the guiding principles of that person are, and look for your own personal compass or âWonder Womanâ, that will keep you on the track, and create your own best practices or strategy each day for walking that path. Youâll find that whoever you choose to be, that is exactly the type of results youâll be manifesting.

The Uses of Vortex Optical Components in Day-To-Day Tasks
An optical vortex is a single of a zero of an electromagnetic field; a position of zero degrees in which the propagation of electric and optical waves are stopped. The word is also used to define a straight beam of light which has such a zero degree in it. In other words, it is a position where light rays have no interaction with each other. It is like a light beam travelling along straight and parallel roads. The optical vortex describes the curve of a light wave as it propagates through a medium.
Let us see how this works on a simplified example, the so-called Bell experiment. The Bell experimented with the effect of a shock wave on the surface of an electric conductor, the thickness of which is determined. The theory of the Bell was that if the source is placed at a point, say a head, then a portion of the waves will be incident on the conductor and will create an induced impulse on the surface of the rod; this impulse will produce a variation in the thickness of the rod that is caused by the change in the angle of reflection and transmission. This deviation from the mean path of the electric field, due to the change in angle of transmission and reflection, produces a deviation from the zero degree of the field and the optical vortex phase plate.
This is how it works on a more complicated example; let us presume we take a spherical surface, say disc, as our spherical vortices. We can treat the disc as a collection of grains of different sizes which each can be deformed into a different shape, say a flat disc. Now assume that the number of grains n is constant. To get the vortex structure, we introduce a thin, flat disc as a collimating lens, letting it focus on the disc to form a virtual screen where the image n of the virtual screen can be seen on the surface of the disc. If we now change the focus of the lens and make it smaller, we have effectively introduced a modulation in the topology of the surface of the disc, which will alter the shape of the surface and thus produce a variation in the topological charge of the object.
Here is another way to understand the optical vortex. Assuming a two-dimensional disc as our sphere of operation, we can rotate the arrangement of the disc by hand, or by an electric motor (like the kind you see on television). Suppose we move the central area of the disc, say the area we determined earlier, to the right, and the peripheral areas to the left. We must also suppose that the inner and outer areas of the disc have different angular Momentum densities, which will result in a net change in the angular momentum of the system.
The simplest model for the generation of a vortex, assuming the non-rotating axis of symmetry, is the one-dimensional curve of constant helical beam profiles. The central region will radiate radial thrust into the neighboring regions, creating a net force inside the particle. Although the radial force may be complicated depending on the shapes of the shapes inside the system, this method is more accurate than the previous model because it takes into account the effects of tumbling.
Another example of how optical vortices can be used in practice is in the study of charged pairs of particles. In a situation where a pair of particles is charged at opposite poles, the two will come very close together if they are placed at the focus of an optical field. In this case, the momentum of the system is not conserved, but instead, the wave action produces an attractive curvature, just like in the earlier model for the production of helical waves. When the orientation of the charged particles changes, the wave-field comes into play, causing the electron to bump into the photons.
There are other uses for optical vortex, such as the application of ultrasound power. In this case, the momentum of the system, along with the strength and angle of modulation, are used to drive helical beams through fluid. For instance, ultrasound technicians use a machine to create an ultrasound beam that travels through a tube. Inside this tube are two hollow cylinders, one filled with water and the other with air. The air cylinder is filled with varying volumes of water, while the water cylinder has an inner ring of air that forms a tubular shape as it spirals around the outer ring.
When the inner ring of air and the outer ring of air to form a U shape, the result is an energy dipole moment, which can be measured in terms of the scattering of electromagnetic radiation. A dynamic holographic optical vortex device, which uses the principle of optical vortices, can measure the time it takes for this energy to reach the ends of the tubes. This information is important in designing materials such as lenses and membranes, as well as in manufacturing machinery for such things as printing presses. Without such measurements, manufacturers would know little about the materials they use in their day-to-day tasks.

Dr. Johnson started the AVRP in 1969, and it was initially known as the American Physical Therapy Association but was changed to the better-known association of chiropractors. Dr. Johnson believed that chiropractors should not have to specialize in any field other than their main one. He felt that chiropractors should be able to use their skills in all aspects of the practice. He felt that chiropractors should be allowed to give a variety of treatments and treat patients who were not only ill or injured, but also mentally and emotionally upset. There are many who still believe that Dr. Johnson's work is not recognized all over the world. However, it has been proved that his theories helped thousands of patients throughout the years. Some of these were diagnosed with terminal diseases who were desperate enough to accept anything. Advanced Chiropractic Relief was one of the few institutions that were willing to provide a cure.
The founder of advanced chiropractic relief, was Dr. John Johnson. He began his work as a staff physician at the Houston Veteran's Administration Medical Center. As his expertise increased, he was able to take over the entire clinic. He felt that the best way to help his patients would be to provide an all natural chiropractic treatment. When he noticed that patients coming to the Houston VA medical center with back problems, he decided that they needed spinal adjustments too. He opened a chiropractic office in the Spring of 2020. His goal was to provide a low cost, high quality service for all of his patients. He felt that by working on the spine, he could prevent the vertebral subluxations that cause many back problems.
One of the reasons that the patients did not feel the pain went away as quickly as it had in other doctors offices was because they were not receiving the all natural chiropractic care. When the patients were receiving spinal manipulations, they were receiving a massage type service. Others have seen a surgeon removes part of their spine so that the chiropractor can manipulate the spine and treat the various joints at the same time. When these chiropractors combine the all natural chiropractic care with the chiropractic manipulation of the spine, many of the problems go away.
For most of the patients who use this type of treatment, they will be given an initial visit at the chiropractic office before they are put on a program. There is no cost for the first visit and most times they are covered by insurance. The first time that they are on this type of program, it is very important to watch the progress that they are making with the pain relief. If the progress is not good, they may end up having more than one visit and this can lead to a lot of unnecessary expense for the patient.
