Part One. Part Two

It seems so strange to me, to have him sitting across from me laughing and joking like I wasn't responsible for his best friend's misery. He asked a lot of questions, mostly about certain choices I had made for him and his friends. I had sheepishly explained that sometimes those things just come to me and they feel perfect, that there's no real rhyme or reason half the time.

He seems content with that, content with the knowledge that even I am not in control.

"Does he get a happy ever after?" He asks, so out of the blue from the lighthearted nature of our conversation. I try to smile at him, but he sees right through me. A quiet nod and his lips press together tightly.

"Makes sense. Whishlings aren't very lucky creatures, are they?" He asks, looking at me with such despair in his eyes it hurts. What I wouldn't give for the loyalty of a dragon.

I shake my head no, there's no point in saying it out loud.

No point in stating the obvious and cruel way I have treated their world.

Cause the thing is, my big boy here is a pretty open book. Especially when it comes to his best friend Maxlar.

But he's always been hiding the actual connotations his massive dragon form actually has. See, for Dragons, the Bigger the dragon, the more Power they have. Quite literally, it's the Biggest Dragon gets to be King/Queen.

Devon could easily compete for the crown.

His parents even tried to pressure him into it, but he refused. He honestly hardly ever uses his Dragon form, even when surrounded by other Dragons. He genuinely doesn't want everyone finding out he could easily becoming Crown King. He wants to keep living his life on the edge, going with the flow with Maxlar and their friends.

Besides, he's seen what stress Hades gets placed under after he becomes King of the Night Watchers. And he doesn't want them.

Not to mention the fact, he actually trusts the opinions/leadership quality of the current reigning King and the one competing for the throne once this one retires/dies. He's never seen a reason to be involved in politics, but he knows once everyone hears he could be Dragon King, he'd be unable to avoid it. So, he keeps that to himself.
