I listened to Deviser this week, which is a sci-fi horror podcast about what happens when bad literary analysis goes unchecked

i love Harlan Guthrie shows because I never know if the terrifying voice speaking from where no one should be is Harlan Guthrie (supposed to be dead), Harlan Guthrie (supposed to be trapped somewhere), or Harlan Guthrie (terrifying new thing that’s yet to be heard).

Deviser frequently parallels the creation story outlined in the book of Genesis. This isn't limited to the subject matter and plot; the character names (Dad and Son) and the episode titles themselves also reflect this as a definite intention of the creator. The podcast does an excellent job offering a new lens on the creation story (fable, as Dad might call it). It points out the flaws of pursuing the "perfect human" specimen through a character constantly trying to replicate a version of humanity outlined in an ancient artifact, but lacking complete context now that thousands of years have passed. Sound familiar?

Nobody is perfect, ergo the expectations mean everyone fails to meet them. So then what? You don't have to be perfect, so now you can be good.

The point of humanity isn't perfection. It's hope.

This makes me all the more surprised that I didn't expect the podcast to end the way it did. But I'm actually happy about that - I needed the reminder. :)

Theres something about how full of love and devotion Dad from Deviser is that continually gets my ass. He’s just confused and doesnt have the whole picture.

He’s devoted to the idea of humanity and he wants to bring it back, and he loves it so much that he needs to bring it back perfectly, and he loves his humans so much that he names himself Dad, and calls them all his children, and he does terrible things because he cannot allow himself to fail. when he thinks he’s finally succeeded, he jumps the gun on an unfinished project because he loves his son so much that he wants to give him a hug, even if its not going to be perfect like he wants, and when his son turns on him, of COURSE he’s hurt and confused and upset and MAD. Because all he wanted was to be loved back. To not be alone. And when his son kills him, he spends his dying moments assuring his safety, and assuring him that he loves him. Just. AUGH.
