The first criterion for anti-pollution masks is that it should filter or keep out more than 95% of the particulate matter present in a given air sample[2]. In terms of the air sample in the real world, it may be a stretch of road, or a locality where a factory exists, or even the smoke released from a car next to you.

When it comes to particulate matter, the anti-pollution masks one uses must be proven to have less than 95% of particulate matter inside the mask while being used, as compared to the particulate matter present in a given area. The mask that performs this function is known as an N95 mask. It is an official standard in masks, and every mask is tested for viability against this parameter.
