Detective!Dean x Victim!Reader
Warnings: Language, Fluff....Then a Ton of Angst {Sorry, not sorry}

After making a breakthrough with the security footage at the convenience store, Styles and Dean followed a few leads. With some luck on their side, they were able to pin who the suspect was that attacked the clerk and took his life. They were even able to get an address and to both of their surprise, their man was home. Within just a few hours of finding the body they had their suspect in cuffs. That chalked up to a good day.
“Great work, Styles.”
“Same goes for you, boss.” The two men share a smile as they descend the stairs outside the precinct. “Tell Y/N I said hi.”
“Will do.” After giving him a nod, Dean pats his friend on the shoulder and then they split, both heading for their cars at different ends of the parking lot.
As Dean makes his way towards the car, he pulls out his phone and clicks on one of the most recent contacts before bringing the device up to his ear. When he makes it to his door, Eddie is driving by, already on his way out of the parking lot, so Dean sends him a wave and that’s when the ringing ends.
“Hey, you.”
“Hey! How was dress shopping?”
“Good. How was your thing?” Dean smirks as he slips into his car.
“Really good actually. I’ll tell you about it later.”
“Okay.”
“But first…did you find a dress?” The silence makes him a little nervous. He begins to think that maybe it turned out to be harder than you expected and that you were disappointed with the entire thing.
“Maybe…” you tease, getting him to light up in the drivers seat.
“Man…you have no idea how bad I want to see you in it.” He tries so hard to picture you in a wedding dress, but he’s sure that whatever his mind is coming up with is nothing compared to what you really look like. That’s what Sam had told him anyway.
“You still have a few months there, cowboy.” you giggle over the phone, getting Dean to smile even bigger. “Are you coming home?”
“Uh…yeah. Just got in the car. But I wanted to see what you wanted for dinner. I figured I could pick up something on the way home.”
“Hmm.” You hum quietly, clearly thinking about what you might want to eat. “How about Chinese?” The way you ask him makes him chuckle. The cute innocence always got him to adore you more.
“You got it, babe.” With that, he turns over the ignition and the car rumbles to life. “Do you need me to grab anything else on the way?”
“Nope. Just need you and food.”
“I love how you put me before the food.”
“It was a close one, but you just barely edged it out.”
“Is that so?” he laughs as he pulls out of his spot and heads for the main road.
“Yep. I’ve been missing you longer than food. But, if you take too long and my stomach starts to eat itself you may be bumped out of the running.”
“Then I better hurry then, huh?” The sound of your laughter makes him feel like he’s already home. Between the score with the case and the fact that he’s heading home to you, he felt like today couldn’t get any better. “I miss you.”
“I miss you too.” Dean focuses on the road but stays silent for a minute and just admires the sound of your voice, replaying what you just said over in his head like one of his favorite songs.
“Alright, I’ll let you go. I’m going to grab food and I’ll be home as soon as I can.”
“Okay. Love you.”
“Love you.”

The chatter down the hall had died down telling Bobby that it was getting later. The night crew at the precinct were starting their shifts and the morning crew had either already left or like him were on their way out the door. He was just taking a few more minutes to file a couple reports and clean up his desk a bit, because he knew that if he didn’t take the time now he would have to deal with it in the morning.
Just as his computer was shutting down for the night, he grabbed his keys from inside the top drawer and stood from his chair, pulling his jacket off the back of it.
“Captain?”
“What is it?” Bobby gave a little attitude because this always seemed to happen. Right as he was heading out for the day he always seemed to get stopped for something.
“There’s someone here that’s asked to see you and Detective Styles.” Huffing as he slides his jacket on, Bobby then glares at the officer at his door.
“Sampson, I’m on my way out the door, can’t this wait?”
“Well…I don’t know.” As the officer seemed conflicted, Bobby decides to give the newbie a break. But just this once.
“Who is it?”
“He said his name is Robert Thare.” And that’s when Bobby was grateful he cooled his head. The name instantly clicked and he couldn’t have reacted faster.
“Let him in.” Thankfully Sampson was quick to show Mr.Thare into the office. The tall man peeks his head in before stepping through the threshold and nodding to the officer before he walks away.
“Hi, Mr. Singer. I’m sorry it’s so late. I almost waited until tomorrow, but…”
“That’s alright.” Bobby grins, stepping around his desk. “What can I do for you?”
“Well, I uh…I found that tape I was looking for. You know, the one that shows Norman coming home and then his friend showing up?” As he tells Bobby, he hands the tape over to him and Bobby treats the VHS as if it’s a precious diamond.
“So….this has that footage on it? You’re sure?”
“Yes. I um…I forgot that I had some stuff put away in a storage unit in town and when I found more tapes I went through them.” he says, looking from the tape to the captain, an uneasiness taking over his expressions. “I uh…I can’t believe that I didn’t turn it in sooner, honestly. After watching it again…I don’t know why I didn’t find it suspicious earlier. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. When you’re not used to spotting those types of things, it’s harder to believe when you see it for yourself.” Mr. Thare nods faintly, looking a little sick.
“Well I uh…I found the footage and then rewound it for you, so you should just be able to pop it in and play it.”
“Thank you.” Bobby tells him sincerely. “You don’t know how much we appreciate this. I’m glad you caught me before I left.”
“Me too.” Mr. Thare says after a few nods. “I um, I don’t know if I’ll be of any help, but if you need anything else….let me know.”
“We will. But I think this might be the extent of it. Hopefully we don’t have to bother you anymore.” The two share a nice chuckle and then Bobby shows the man to the door. He is deeply appreciative of what that man has done for them, but once he was heading towards the front of the precinct, Bobby couldn’t have moved faster. He rushed over to the TV in his office and popped the tape in the VCR and he couldn’t have hit the play button any quicker either.
It was only a few seconds between him hitting play and when Norman's car pulled into the driveway, but for Bobby those were the longest seconds ever, and even then, that’s not what he wanted to see. He knew that Norman was responsible for bringing Cassie back to his house. It was the next car that he was anxiously waiting to see cross the screen.
Then finally, the moment came. The second car whipped up to the house and as the man climbed out of the drivers side, Bobby’s jaw dropped.
-
Getting food took longer than expected, but now that Dean was finally home he felt himself becoming more relaxed. He couldn’t wait to go inside, share a good meal and tell you about their slam dunk. It’s been a long time since they’ve been able to close a murder case that fast and it seriously made his day.
Hearing the garage door close behind him, he enters the house and goes for the coffee table in the living room to set the bag of Chinese down.
“Babe!? I’m home!” he yells out when he sees you’re not on the main floor anywhere. Figuring you jumped in the shower before he got home, he glances up the stairs before moving towards the front door where he drops off his keys and wallet and then takes off his suit jacket.
“They had some of your favorite egg rolls so I grabbed a couple of them!” He continues talking as he climbs to the second floor. He hopes you’ll hear him coming so he won’t scare you in the process. “I also stopped and grabbed a bottle of wine! Thought that sounded like a good way to celebrate!”
His smile is literally from ear to ear as he enters the bedroom, but sadly it doesn’t stay that way. Because when he does enter the room he’s met with darkness. The bedroom light is off and as he moves further in, it’s clear that the bathroom is vacant as well.
“Y/N?” he turns, his eyes scanning the room as if you’re going to pop out and scare him. But nothing. It’s silent.
“Y/N!?” he calls out as he moves down the hall to your office and he even peeks into the spare bedroom. But again, nothing. There’s no sign of you upstairs.
“Babe!?” Rushing back down the stairs, his heart is now racing from fear. This wasn’t right and the more his mind tried to figure out what was going on, the more scared he got. “Y/N!” he runs into his office, even with nowhere to hide he searches top to bottom. Nothing.
Running back into the other room, he quickly enters the empty kitchen and that’s when bile begins to rise in his throat.
“Y/N?” he calls out weakly, his eyes darting around the house as he leaves the kitchen and enters the dining room. The living room is quiet, only the food sitting there waiting for him. He tries to take a few breaths before he pulls out his phone, but just as he’s about to call you something on the dining room table catches his eye.
His feet slowly take him towards the objects waiting for him. His heart is beating so fast that it feels as if it’s already broken a rib or two. He doesn’t even realize tears have filled his eyes until he stands over the table and a water droplet falls onto the ripped piece of paper in front of him.
Play Me
The words took up the little torn sheet and now shared the space with the tear that had fallen from his eye.
Dean swallows as he picks up the recorder, his recorder, and his thumb shakes as it hovers over the play button. But when it finally pushes it down, he has to fight to keep the contents in his stomach.
Detective
The voice is distorted, as if the atmosphere didn’t already feel like a horror movie.
We both know that I have something precious to you, so listen carefully.
Dean’s jaw locks, his body trembling as he listens to this horrible robotic voice.
If you contact any law enforcement including anyone at that station of yours, she dies. If you reach out to that lawyer brother of yours, she dies. If you do anything other than what I’m telling you to do….well, you don’t need me to go into specific details of what I’ll do to her. So, I hope you’re listening.
Dean screws his eyes shut, his fingernails digging into his palm as his hands clenched into fists. The thought of you in this guy's presence is unbearable. He can’t think straight let alone breathe.
Now, take the phone with you. I’m going to send you an address to where you are going to retrieve a tape. When you get it, I’ll send you another address. Dean glances down at the table, seeing a prepaid phone sitting next to the note.
If you come with any type of backup, wanted or unwanted, I’ll slit her throat. Understand?
I am watching you detective. So if you get any of those brilliant ideas of yours along the way, ask yourself, is it worth her life?
See you soon.

the eyes of a lamb | 42.9k
The year is ‘98 and Spring is approaching fast. For most, the season is a symbol of new beginnings with Mother Nature’s chaste kiss that breathes life into everything once more. It’s inspiring, peaceful and beautiful. So, the fact that this is exactly when a certain serial killer loves to strike makes Detective Winchester’s blood boil. Two years in a row now, the guy has slipped through his fingers, not leaving a single trace behind. No clues, no leads, just murdered women in the most picturesque places imaginable. And the worst thing of all? Sometimes Dean catches himself admiring the killer’s work.

Dean had woken with a start. A sheen of sweat covered his body, his limbs tangled in the sheets. His breath came in short gasps as he tried to calm himself down from the recurring nightmare that plagued him.
It wasn’t the first time he has had this particular dream. In fact, it was the third time this week. He could never quite remember the exact details, had even resorted to keeping a notebook and pen by the side of the bed in an attempt to make sense of it, but so far, the pages were still blank. All he knew when he woke was that he was scared. No, not scared.
Petrified.
His body would refuse to move, sleep paralysis pinning him down. He could move his eyes, but that was all. As they flickered around the room, every shadow seemed like a threat, every creak an intruder. A scream would build in his chest, his lips desperate to open to allow the sound to escape, but they remained sealed shut. The fear would build as the shades loomed over him, their darkness and weight pressing down on him like a boulder, the oppressive atmosphere suffocating.
Then the paralysis would break. Finally, the scream would fly from his lungs as his body jerked up, hands fisting the sheets, his knuckles white from his vice-like grip.
As he relaxed, he sank back down into the mattress, chest heaving as tears spilled down his cheeks. His clutch gradually loosened on the covers, releasing the material.
He sat back up and leaned over. With trembling hands, he switched on the bedside lamp. The welcoming glow spilled into the room, the monstrous shadows rushing away, back into the corners to cower there until they decided to taunt him some more. Picking up the glass of water that he always kept on the chest of drawers, he brought it to his parched lips, the liquid rippling on the surface as his hands continued to shake. Taking a large gulp, he swallowed hard, the water slightly tepid, but a welcome relief to his dry mouth.
Placing the glass back down, he scanned the room. As usual, he was alone. He had no one there to soothe him. No one there to wake him before the nightmare took hold. No one there to offer comfort, to reassure him everything was okay and he was only dreaming, which seemed to be getting worse each time. In the dream, he was running through a dark, unfamiliar forest, his heart pounding as if it would burst from his chest. He could hear the sound of something chasing him, but whenever he turned around, there was nothing there.
The feeling of being pursued was terrifying, and it seemed like he was running for hours. Eventually, he would stumble and fall, and when he tried to get up, he found that he couldn't move. It was like his limbs were made of lead, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't seem to get them to work. That was when he would wake up, drenched in sweat and panting for breath.
Dean knew that he had to find a way to stop these dreams. They were taking a toll on his mental and physical health. He had tried everything from meditation to sleeping pills, but nothing seemed to work. He couldn't shake the feeling that this dream was trying to tell him something, and until he figured out what that was, he wouldn't be able to rest easy.
Knowing the answer before he even looked, his eyes landed on the digital clock, the glowing red numbers telling him it was 3.40am. When he awoke from a nightmare, it was always at the same time, and tonight was no different.
He knew sleep would evade him for the rest of the night. His alarm was set for 5am, so even if he did manage to doze back off, he would only get an hour or so. Accepting that he would not be getting any more rest, he swung his legs out of bed, and padded across the room, deciding to take a shower.
As Dean entered the bathroom, he stripped off his t-shirt and boxer shorts that were damp with sweat. Throwing them into the laundry basket, he switched on the shower and waited for the water to heat up, moving to the toilet to empty his bladder as it did. Turning to the sink, he cleaned his teeth and swilled mouthwash around his mouth. The liquid spilled from his mouth into the sink, circling down into the void. The troubled man glanced up and stared at his reflection in the mirror in horror. He looked exhausted. The shadows under his fatigued forest green eyes were dark and large, his pallor pale, causing the smattering of freckles that adorned his usually handsome face to stand out like a child’s dot to dot colouring book. His light brown hair was sticking up in messy angles, flecks of grey obvious in the harsh luminous light coming from the bulb that was too bright for the small dimensions of the room. He sighed and rubbed his face, the stubble there emitting a scratchy sound as he brought his palm down his neck.
Stepping into the warm flow of the shower, Dean leaned against the cool, tiled wall, letting the water cascade down his body. His muscles were aching, as they always did after suffering from sleep paralysis. He supposed it was from clenching them in his sleep, holding them in one position against his will. He kneaded his shoulder, digging his fingers into the skin, trying to release the tension. It helped slightly, but the pain was still there. Squeezing some shampoo into his hand, he massaged it into his hair, his eyes following the stream of suds as they ran into the drain. His mind went blank and he placed the palms of his hands against the wall, allowing the pent-up tears to fall, no longer able to keep them inside. They mingled with the remnants of the shampoo as they slipped down his cheeks.
He wasn’t sure how much longer he could do this. Ever since ‘the incident’ - as he put it to himself - he hadn’t got any more than three or four hours of sleep a night, and it was catching up with him. But Dean couldn’t let it show, couldn’t let anyone else see that he was weak - not in his line of work. He had to deal with it alone, deal with it inwardly, even though it ate him up inside, piece by piece, bit by bit, until there would be nothing left. The only place he could get any kind of reprieve from it was when he was in the shower. That way, not even he could distinguish the water from the tears. He had never been one to show his feelings.
His mother had passed away when he was four. His younger brother, Sam, had only been six months old at the time. A house fire had ripped her away from them. Their father, John Winchester, had struggled to deal with his grief and took a job which required traveling around the country, forcing the broken family to stay in bleak motel rooms all around the US. His father would often work overnight, leaving Dean to practically bring up his sibling alone. Dean had become Sam’s protector, his provider and his best and only friend. The older brother's relationship with John was extremely fractured, their arguments legendary.
When Dean told him he wanted to become a detective, his old man had laughed, telling him that there was no way he would ever be able to, that he would amount to nothing. This made him even more determined, so at nineteen he moved to Lawrence, Kansas and joined the police force. He had become a detective by the time he was twenty-five. Dean was now forty, living in Los Angeles, having had to leave Lawrence after ‘the incident’ and was one of the most senior and respected officers in his precinct. Of course, his career had always come first, and even though he had had a few brief relationships, he had never met ‘the one’. It was common knowledge that if detectives did settle down, many of the marriages ended in divorce, due to the pressures of the job, so Dean decided long ago that he was better off alone. A conclusion he rarely regretted, except on the nights where he woke from night terrors, scared and needing some human contact.
When Dean was in his twenties, his father had passed away. He hadn’t cried in public, shedding only a single tear at the funeral, which the younger Winchester had witnessed. When Sam had placed his hand on his shoulder - his eyes dry - Dean swiped the tear away, and vowed never to show any weakness to anyone again.
His little brother had applied for college, aced his exams and was accepted into Stanford University to study law. Now thirty-six, he was running his own law firm in Lawrence, having joined Dean in the small city. When Dean had moved to L.A., Sam had stayed. He was married to a lovely girl called Jess, a high school teacher. Even though he was distraught at his brother moving to the other side of the country, he couldn’t go with him as there was too much for him to leave behind, but he knew that Dean had to go due to his particular circumstances. They spoke regularly over the phone and via Skype, and Dean was extremely proud of the man Sam had grown up to become.
Taking a deep breath, he stepped out from under the water and turned off the tap. Wrapping a towel around his waist, he walked from the room, his damp feet leaving footprints on the wooden floor of his apartment as he made his way into his bedroom and looked at the clock. It was still only 4.10am, and so he dried himself off, pulled on a pair of sweatpants, and padded into the open plan kitchen.
The exhausted man was desperate for caffeine, so he switched on the machine, preparing his cup while the coffee bubbled. After pouring the beverage into his mug, he sat down, rubbing at his tired eyes that felt like sand had been thrown in them, and unplugged his cell from the wall.
Scanning through his email, the phone suddenly started to ring in his hand.
“Hello,” Dean said as he brought it to his ear. “Detective Elliott? It’s Detective Hanscum.” a woman said, urgency evident in her voice. “There’s been another one.”

Small announcement as we all wait patiently for my storytelling bones to revive after summer ended and I’ve gone back to teaching (it’s been dreadful btw, 8th graders are mean).
In between writing my new series coming up, I’ve been going back and rewriting an older series that needed some revamping! This first series is one I loved the concept of, but after reading through it, I was cringing horribly at how cliche and annoying I had written the main character. The story had a good basis, but lord, was I pulling from my limited knowledge of how to make a story intriguing and original.
With all that being said… I’ve gone through and re-wrote it! If you’ve read it in the past and liked it, see what you think on what a more well-seasoned🧂🧅🧄 author can do now ;)
If you haven’t read it yet, it’s ok. I started it again recently and had many epiphanies of my cringey pick-me-girl language I gave my lead… BUT it should be MUCH BETTER now!! And who knows, 3 years from now, I’ll be making it even better. For now, I’m happier with it than before.
I’m hoping to get the first 5 chapters released sometime this weekend after I do a final run-through, but this series should be posted in completion in a week.
Without further ado…. The Protection Program (An adaptation of an original series from 4 years ago.)
I'm tagging those originally on the tag list for this series and any new people on my forever list :)

THREE YEARS SINCE NOV 5TH, 2020 as summed up by Supernatural (sequel to this and this)
image ID & context below:
[image ID: screenshots of Supernatural paired with screenshots of various tweets, news headlines and Tumblr posts.
A screenshot of Ed and Harry in SPN 3x13 Ghostfacers saying "You gotta be gay for that poor dead intern" with a screenshot of Misha Collins at the SPNNJ 2023 convention saying "I got a call from Warner Bros and they were like hey uh...is there any world you just let it go?" This is in reference to an incident in 2022 where Misha accidentally made headlines after a comment that seemed to be referring to his sexuality. His comments at this year's panel imply that the studio in fact did not want him to retract the comment and make the apology that he posted, but to instead just roll with it.
A screenshot of Bobby saying "Time travel?" and Dean saying "Yeah" in SPN 6x18 with a headline that says "Jensen Ackles' Explains The Winchester's Multiverse Twist & Supernatural Connection." This is about the series finale of Jensen's Supernatural spinoff "The Winchesters", in which it is revealed Dean and the Impala somehow traveled the multiverse to the alternate timeline the show takes place in.
A screenshot of Dean in SPN 15x08 saying "He's back, and he's out of control" with a screenshot of Misha Collin's first Tumblr post in seven years, a video with him and his brother being a public nuisance on public transportation. Also included are screenshots of various Tumblr users reacting with tags from various tumblr users. becauseofthebowties: "mishacollinsofficial tumblr account back from the dead???" myboobsarentsentientbeings: "this is the first thing he posts? after nearly 7 years???" casismybestfriend: "RED FUCKING ALERT MISHA IS BACK ON TUMBLR" cannabiscasgate: "who the fuck gave you back your password"
A screenshot of two news anchors in SPN 14x20, with one (named Jack) telling his co-host "I love you" and her replying "Jack?" with screenshots of the Destiel/Supernatural Confession meme trending multiple times this year with other current events topics like Russia, Titanic, etc. There is also a screenshot of a post by saintedcastiel that says "I cannot believe that since we started using the destiel meme as a breaking news alert that there hasn't been ONE destiel news anchor AU fic where they're co-anchors on the morning news. cas confessed on accident while they're on air and dean doesn't know how to respond so he just reads the next thing on the teleprompter."
A screenshot of Dean in SPN 5x14 as Cupid says "I-I was just following orders" with a screenshot of an anonymous Tumblr ask to user luxshine. The ask says "Hey! I was wondering if you have any updates on the LATAM dub situation and if you were/will able to contact the dub director". luxshine says "Hi! Well I could get the translator (you know, our dear rogue translator) and he told me that while he doesn't remember it completely (because he translates a lot of series) if Dean said "And I you" it's because the script he got said "And" I you" and the video he saw said "And I you" because he doesn't add stuff." This is in reference to a change in Spanish LATAM dub of Castiel's confession SPN 15x18, which added a line where Dean reciprocates, which was previously suspected to be a change added by the LATAM dubbing director or translator
A screenshot of a detective from SPN 8x08 saying, "[Chuckles] Whatever you say Scully" with a screenshot of the tumble blr blog ao3topshipsbracket's poll "AO3 Top Relationships Bracket - Round 2 Side 1" with Fox Mulder/Dana Scully (The X-Files) vs. Castiel/Dean Winchester (Supernatural.) In the final results from 51,514 votes, Mulder/Scully won by 53% and Castiel/Dean won by 47%. In early 2023, Tumblr added a polls feature which has led to numerous content, debates, and bracket polls similar to this.
A screenshot from SPN 11x15 where Dean says "No money, no glory" with a headline that says "Supernatural creator Eric Kripke gets 'zero' residuals from Netflix"
A screenshot of Dean rising from his grave in SPN 4x01 with a screenshot of a post from the official CW Supernatural Instagram with a clip from the pilot episode and the caption "And the story continues..." and a comment from a user that says "THE STORY CONTINUES?? WTF ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL US?? I HAVE ANXIETY YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME." For context, no one is sure if the post was supposed to reference new content from Supernatural or not but it has led to speculation.
A screenshot of SPN 8x01, with the onscreen lyric "Another year has passed me by."

I got struck with an idea for a mafia!au and this particular scene was so incredibly delicious I just couldn't help myself but to draw Castiel as a bear/silver fox, who kept teasing the young detective Winchester.

Escape {63}
Detective!Dean x Victim!Reader
Warnings: Language, Fluff, Sadness, Dead Body
Words: 2,352
Series Masterlist - Main Masterlist -Patreon
Sorry I haven't been able to update the Escape Masterlist, it's been a little crazy on my end. Hopefully I'll get to it soon. Love you guys!
Dean smiles contently as he stands at the kitchen counter. The two mugs in front of him are full of steaming fresh brewed coffee and he can’t wait to drink it. But first he adds a little sugar and creamer to one of them and then he carefully makes his way to the table. You lean your head back as he walks up behind you and sets your coffee down on the table, both your smiles growing when he leans down and steals a kiss in front of his family.
“Thank you.” you say to him quietly, earning a wink from him before he slips into the chair next to you.
“Did you know that that place is closing down, though?” You look across the table, putting yourself back into the conversation as you take a sip of your coffee. You have to take a moment to really savor that first sip though because Dean had it spot on. “They made the best muffins. I’m so bummed.”
“What place are you talking about?” You have to ask, clearly missing the beginning of the conversation.
“Annie’s. They’ve been around for…I don’t know. For as long as I can remember. But apparently the original owner passed and her kids can’t, or don’t want to keep it up without her, so…” Sarah shrugs, but it’s clear she still isn’t happy about it.
“That’s sad.” Marry adds, lifting her mug to her lips. “But to keep up a business is a lot of work, so…they probably made the right decision.”
“You’ll just have to find better muffins somewhere else.” Dean teases her, smirking behind his coffee.
“There will never be somewhere better than them.” Sarah tells him with a playful angry tone, getting the rest of you to laugh a bit.
After the laughter dies down, the six of you fall into a content silence. All of you enjoy more drinks from your coffee’s and even take a few bites of the doughnuts that Sam and Sarah brought along. But when Mary sighs, all eyes go to her. With the sun coming in from the window, her golden hair glowing from the spotlight and the soft grin on her face, it seems to spread around the table to the lot of you.
“It’s such a beautiful morning.” she finally says, the rest of you agreeing with either a soft hum or just a nod of your heads.
March had finally shown and spring looked like it was just around the corner. The colder weather hadn’t been around for the past few weeks and none of you were complaining about that.
After a few more minutes of quiet, Mary and Sarah started talking about some things that were happening around town now that the weather was picking back up, like farmers markets. The three of you girls were already planning a get together when someone's phone started going off, and you knew it was Dean’s the second it did.
He shifts in his seat so that he can pull it from his pocket and takes a quick glance at the caller ID before scooting his chair away from the table.
“Excuse me.” he says to the family in a low voice, not wanting to interrupt his mom and sister in law from talking and then he steps into the other room, just out of earshot for all of you.
You knew it had to be work and you were trying not to let it get to you. This was his life and you supported that. He was a good detective and an honest to God great officer for when they needed help with little side jobs. It just got you down a bit knowing that this day was supposed to be special and you had a gut feeling that he was getting called away on a job right now. You were heading out with the girls to look for wedding dresses and the guys were off to get their tuxedos, but you were getting the feeling that the tuxes were going to have to wait.
You tried to get into the conversation at the table but you just couldn’t do it. You looked on with the best smile you could, but you had your head tilted back a tad in attempts to hear Dean with his phone call. Unfortunately you couldn’t pick up anything, just a few ‘okay’s’ and ‘yes’s’ here and there, otherwise you didn’t hear anything until his boots carried him back into the dining room.
“Hey.” The tone told you that you were right. As for the others, it updated them on what their day was going to be.
“Work?” John asks right away as the other three just looked a tad disappointed.
“Yeah. There was a hold up at the convenience store off of Wesley last night and they need me.”
“Is everyone okay?” Mary was the first to ask the dreaded question and you could see just from the way Dean was looking over all of you that the answer was no.
“No.” he finally says in a somber voice. “So, I’m afraid we’ll have to postpone the tuxes. I mean, it shouldn’t take us long to find good ones, so…we’ll do it soon.” Both Sam and John nod, understanding, and though you did too, the slight jealousy you felt that work took your fiance away again must have been showing.
“I promise it’ll be okay.” he tries to assure you, his hand resting on your shoulder before he looks over his family again. “So, you girls go out, have fun. Get some lunch and enjoy yourselves.” he takes a second and drinks a little more of his coffee but then squeezes your shoulder to get you to look up at him.
“Can I talk to you for a sec?” That of course didn’t help how you were feeling in that moment, but you nod and follow him out to the foyer.
“What’s up?” you ask when he gets you alone. But he just reaches into his back pocket and digs out his wallet. You don’t understand what he’s doing even as he pulls out one of his cards and hands it over to you. You’re so confused that you don’t even know what to ask.
“If you find the right one.” he tells you, getting your eyes to snap back to him. “And don’t worry about the price, there should be plenty on there.”
“Dean…” you choke, looking back at the credit card in your hand. “No, I can’t…”
“Look, I know that you and your family aren’t exactly on the best terms because of the Jeff thing and…” he shrugs, not knowing how to explain himself without bringing up the heavy subject. “If you were able to get a hold of them and they showed interest in coming out, then maybe they’d get you a dress. But that isn’t the case, so.” he shrugs again, a little nervous that he probably upset you.
“Still, I don’t think it’s customary for the groom to buy the dress.”
“Well, as far as I know, I’m just not supposed to see the bride before the ceremony. I haven’t seen any rules on seeing the price of the dress.” he jokes, getting you to finally smile a little.
“Dean.” you whine, still slipping the card between your fingers nervously. “I don’t feel right doing this.”
“Well, you should.” You feel his hands slide along your arms, but you can’t pull yourself to look him in the eye. “You deserve to have the dress of your dreams, Y/N.” Your eyes continue to burn holes in the credit card, your head trying to decline the offer with short sways, but you knew Dean wasn’t going to take no for an answer.
“I hate you.” you finally say, unable to hold back a soft, grateful grin.
“I love you too.” His reply makes your lips break even more and then he steals a kiss before backing towards the door. “Have fun.”
-
News vans were already outside the store, cameras rolling in hopes of catching something good with all the commotion going on. Caution tape along with select officers keep the curious crowd of civilians and news crew back at a safe distance and Dean ignores the news anchors as he ducks under the tape and heads for the entrance of the store.
He can see Eddie through the glass doors and even catches a glimpse of Bobby before he walks behind the counter. When he steps through the threshold, the men look up to see who the new body is and aside from his boss and partner, the other officers go back to work.
“Dean.” Styles gives him a nod and then looks sedately back down at the floor. Dean catches a hand sprawled out on the floor, blood dripping from the fingertips. As he takes a few more steps in, the body of an older man lays sprawled out on the floor, a gun laying just a few inches away from him.
“He tried to stop whoever it was.” Dean crouches down next to the body and Styles continues to tell him what they found. “Looks like the suspect shot him twice, once in the chest and the other in the head. I’m pretty sure the headshot was the fatal one.”
“Cash register empty?” Styles nods when the detective looks up.
“Cigarettes are all over the floor back here too, so we think he stole some cigs before taking off.”
“Yeah, well, why not, right? You already killed the guy so grab what you can and get out.” Standing again, Dean glances around the store and notices that nothing else seems to be too out of place. “How are we with the surveillance footage?”
“Got Johnson on it now. Doesn’t look like it’s been tampered with so we should be able to get something off of it.”
“Good.”
-
“I can’t believe you came.” Sarah giggles, draping a veil over her lap.
“Why? My plans fell through so I had nothing better to do.”
“But usually guys like to be as far away from this stuff as possible.” she counters and Mary just sits off to the side holding back laughter.
“Well,” Sam shrugs, looking over at a rack of dresses. “Y/N’s like a sister to me, so…thought it’d be fun.” Sarah can only smile at her husband, honestly loving how close you two are.
“How are you doing in there, sweetie? You need help?”
“No, I almost have it! I’ll be out in a sec!” Sarah smiles to herself and then looks down at the veil again. She thinks you’ll really like it, but it was one of the last ones on the rack, so she snatched it just in case.
“Sucks about Dean, though. Do you think you’ll be able to get tuxes soon?” she asks her husband, Sam taking a seat next to her after that.
“Yeah.” he says with confidence. “Dean was right, it doesn’t take long to find a good tux. We’ll get them.”
“Alright,” When the three of them hear you through the door, they look up just in time to see you step out with a light sigh. “What do you guys think?” Each one of them is speechless and there for a minute you were beginning to think they didn’t like it.
"Oh my God, Y/N. You look…" Sarah is unable to finish her sentence, but Sam is able to help her out.
"Gorgeous."
"Really?" You question, looking down at the dress and pulling at the lace.
"You're glowing." Mary adds, her eyes studying every detail of the gown. "But what do you think? Your opinion is the one that matters." You look from Mary back down to the glistening gown.
The subtle glitter gives it the perfect amount of sparkle and the little bit of lace gives it just enough character to stand out from the rest. Grabbing the dress from the sides, you pull the fabric up a bit so that you can walk over to the mirror.
This mirror was bigger than the one in the dressing room and gave you a better perspective on how it looked on you and you couldn’t understand how a mirror, such a simple invention could change how you saw things. Somehow, unknown to you, you loved the dress even more looking at it now than you did inside the dressing room.
“I love it.” you finally speak, emotion in your voice and even your eyes are glistening in the mirror, matching the shine of the dress. Sarah squeals in her seat, looking as if she’s struggling to contain her excitement while Mary and Sam just look at you, admiring the gown as much as you.
“Do you think this is the one?” Sarah asks as she jumps out of her seat and comes to your side, her fingers unable to keep to themselves any longer as they feel the lace and the fabric itself.
“I think it is.” you confess, tears becoming more prominent in your eyes.
More squeals come from your friend and she takes a few more moments to look over the gown, then she glances towards the dressing room, craning her neck a little as she tries to see inside.
“How many do you have left?”
“Um…” you think for a second. “Two, I think.”
“Okay, go ahead and try them on. We’ll see if anything else catches your eye and then when you’re done, put this one back on. That’s how you know.” she sends you a wink and helps you back towards the dressing room.
“I would say she just likes playing dress up with you, but I can confirm that that is a good way to know you got the right dress.” You laugh a little at what Mary says before Sarah shuts you inside your dressing room and then you go for the next gown. But even while trying those other two on, you couldn’t stop looking at that dress and you couldn’t wait to put it back on.

Hey I have been looking for Dark Dean and Castiel fics where Dean is OBSESSED with Castiel do you have any recommendations?
Hey hey! Sorry for the delay, but I hope these recs are welcomed now just in time for Halloween.
A bit of a warning though -- some of these fics get really dark and involve very intense subjects so pls mind the tags before reading these.
all that’s sacred comes from youth by fullvoid (Mature, 8k words)
Teenage Dean has a dark, possessive streak he hides well. But when he and Cas agree to get married at age 35 if neither of them has by then, he finds he can't quite just leave it at that and spends years stalking Cas from the shadows and sabotaging every relationship he starts. Or Dean, in love with his best friend Cas and obsessed with a pact they made when they were 17 years old, gets rid of his boyfriends one by one through escalating means.
Between Love and Agony by Duckyboos (Explicit, 53k words)
Dean Winchester is in love. Like, bonafide heart eyes and deep sighs, hung-the-moon love. There's just one problem: the lucky guy is his husband's identical twin, Castiel. The two of them have been having a kinky affair for years, burrowing under each other’s skin and setting up camp. Which is why, after Castiel goes missing, Dean’s about ready to tear the world apart looking for him. When Castiel eventually returns to him, he’s been through literal hell, managing to drag himself out, bloody and raw, for Dean. Together, they discover a way to make Castiel whole again — though the price will be gruesome… and there will certainly be hell to pay.
CONventional Psychopathy 'Verse by Mayalaen (Explicit, 441k words)
Castiel Novak is a Cleaner. One of the agency's best. He and his Handler, Dean Winchester, have a high success rate in a world where the worst criminals aren't imprisoned for their crimes, but instead are captured by licensed serial killers who dispose of them, doing what they do best while getting paid for it. Cas doesn't form attachments, doesn't leave himself open for a risk like that, but Dean wormed his way into Cas' life and into his house. Does Dean realize what falling in love with a serial killer really means?
Do Anything For You by ImYourHoneyBee (Explicit, 7k words)
“How’re you feeling?” his earlier worry and fear have faded into the background because of how freaking good Jimmy looks right now, but that’s the thing to ask. Besides, even if he was planning on killing him soon, propriety has to be observed. Dean has a reputation to uphold as a fine, upstanding citizen in this city. Patrick Bateman wishes he was as smooth as Dean is. “Better than the guy who hit me,” Jimmy tells him with uncharacteristic bluntness, nodding toward the curtained-off bed, “I overheard the doctors saying he flatlined around the same time I did.” “Oh shit,” Dean says, glancing over to try and mask the sick roil that sets up shop in his stomach. “He make it?” The ghost of a smile plays over Jimmy’s chapped lips, “He’s in a better place now.” x The one where Cas's soul takes over Jimmy's body.
Free to Be You and Me by jhoom (Explicit, 49k words) --- This says incomplete but it's a satisfying ending so we think the author just didn't close it out.
Dean lost his parents in a fire when he was younger, and he’s never been the same since. Based on the prompt: "I was ten years old when I witnessed the murder of my entire family. The police told me that the person I saw commit the crime was a figment of my imagination - a result of the trauma - but I couldn’t let it rest. In a strange way, they saved me - with everyone else gone I might have gone to pieces, but I HAD to find the killer, so I held it together, I got through school, I rose through the ranks of detective, and now finally, finally, I’m on their trail. I have to find them. I have to meet them. I have to tell them that I love them."
Hello Night by almaasi (Explicit, 11k words)
Demon!Dean/Priest!Cas AU. Castiel summons Dean to the crossroads, and he only wants one thing: him.
Make Me by saltnhalo (Explicit, 4k words)
A beautiful man on a motorbike shows up at Castiel's business with a t-shirt that says Make me and a smirk that could put the devil to shame. How is Castiel possibly meant to resist?
Monsters by Miss_Lv (Explicit, 11k words)
Castiel prayed to God, to help them, to save them. God never answered. But Dean did. It was the monster who saved Castiel, not God.
Seven Heavenly Virtues by Strixes (Explicit, 108k words)
The Mark of Cain turns Dean into a demon once more. Dean is adamant that this time he's found a way to keep the mark under control but it's clear to Castiel that Dean needs help if he's going to fight the mark's influence until they can find a way to get rid of it. More than anything Castiel wants to save him, but if anyone needs to be saved it's Castiel as he tries to navigate where Dean ends and the Mark of Cain begins.
The Prodigal Bond by vipjuly (Explicit, 68k words)
In exchange for conjugal visits, Dean Winchester gives FBI Supervisory Special Agent Castiel Novak all the dirt he needs to bring down national crime rings. It's a tit-for-tat situation; primal, animalistic, and probably ten kinds of illegal. When a case is revealed to be closer to Castiel than what he considers safe, he and Dean must work together to make sure that Crowley goes down for good. Will Castiel be able to keep Dean at arm's length, or will the charming convict finally get what he's been asking for all along? What lengths will Castiel go to... at Dean's behest?
These Violent Delights by SomethingBlue42, xfancyfranart (Explicit, 43k words)
Dean Winchester, war vet and functioning alcoholic with a life that’s going nowhere, takes a job at Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Dean had never heard of Dr. Castiel Novak notorious serial killer and cannibal given he’d been dodging bullets and performing field triage during Novak’s sensational trial. Seasoned orderly Rufus lays out the rules: Do not touch the glass. Do not approach the glass. You pass him nothing but soft paper - no pencils, no pens. Use the sliding food carrier only, no exceptions. If he attempts to pass you anything, do not accept it. And most importantly: don't tell him anything personal. But Dean was never much for following the rules and Castiel has a way of making Dean feel like he isn’t the grade-a loser his hot-shot FBI agent brother thinks he is. Then, a senator’s daughter goes missing, setting forth a chain of events that put Dean on a path that forces him to choose where his loyalties lie and just how far he’s willing to walk into the dark.
This Tainted Love You've Given by LazarusRose, xfancyfranart (Explicit, 17k words)
Everyone has their hobbies—Dean’s just happens to involve a lot more blood and screaming than most people’s. And sure, maybe murder isn’t the nicest way to blow off steam, but Dean’s always thought that being nice is overrated anyway. His latest victim, a pretty guy with startling blue eyes, should be nothing special, just another nameless body on Dean’s list. But then, after Dean kills and buries him, he turns back up at Dean’s house again the next day. What’s a guy to do when they’ve accidentally gotten an immortal witch convinced that they’ve got some kind of profound bond?
Happy Halloween!!👻🎃

3 weeks before Prologue
Dean walked through the winding streets of Pasadena, Los Angeles, making his way towards the precinct where he would now be working.
After spending a week in the hospital after ‘the incident’, he had been ordered by his Captain, Rufus Turner, to take some time off work to recuperate from his ordeal. Dean wasn’t happy with this command, and had been very resistant to agree. The police force was his life, and the idea of just sitting at home doing nothing was alien to him. But he knew that Rufus was not the kind of man you could argue with.
Rufus had been his chief for several years, and Dean knew that he wouldn't back down once he had made up his mind. He had tried to reason with him, explaining the importance of his job as a police officer, but Rufus had already made up his mind.
Flashback
"Look, I know how you feel," the older man had said, his tone firm. "But you need to take some time off. You've been working non-stop for months. You need to recharge your batteries, spend some time with your family, and just relax."
Dean knew that his Captain was right. He had been putting in long hours, working weekends and holidays, and neglecting his personal life. He had missed important family events, and he could feel the strain on his relationships.
"I understand, sir," he said, trying to keep his voice calm. "But what am I supposed to do? I can't just sit at home and do nothing."
Rufus smiled. "I'm not asking you to do that. There are plenty of things you can do. You can take a vacation, travel, catch up on some reading, or do something you've always wanted to do but never had time for. The point is to take a break, clear your head, and come back refreshed."
The officer nodded, silently acknowledging the wisdom in the words he had just heard. He knew he needed a break, and he also knew that his Captain had his best interests at heart. He would take some time off, reconnect with his family, and come back ready to serve and protect.
"Thank you, sir," he said, standing up. "I appreciate your concern, and I'll take your advice."
Rufus nodded, pleased. "Good. Now, go enjoy yourself. That's an order."
When he eventually returned to work, the idea of being given a new identity and to move away from Lawrence, Kansas had been posed to him. He had been furious, but had eventually agreed when he realised if he didn’t, his life could be in danger.
It was going to be strange. A new day, a new station and a new name.
He pulled the badge from his pocket, the one that was mailed to him by his new superior Captain Bobby Singer.
Detective Jon Elliot.
Dean huffed a laugh. He recognised the mixture of names that had been chosen. Jon Bon Jovi and Joe Elliott. He was impressed. Even though he didn’t think he looked anything like a ‘Jon’, the name was something he was going to have to get used to. His life, and many others, were at stake.
Opening the heavy doors of the police station, he walked over to the desk officer.
“Detective Elliot to see Captain Singer,” he announced. The deputy nodded and picked up the phone. Dean turned around, noticing a few chairs to his left and sat down.
He looked around the reception area. It was full of people, coming and going, and was much bigger than the station he had worked in back in Lawrence. It consisted of a large communal area with around twenty desks and three offices. One that belonged to him and his partner Benny, one that had belonged to Captain Turner and one that had been used as a store room. There had been very little crime in the area he had originally worked in.
That was until Michael had come to town.
He shook the memory from his head, determined to not let himself be distracted today.
“Detective Elliott?” A burly, thick set, bearded man in his late 50’s was walking towards him, his hand outstretched.
“Captain Singer.” Dean stood and shook the man's hand.
“Please. Call me Bobby. There’s no formality here,” he said “Come with me if you will,” he continued, gesturing to a corridor on his left.
Dean nodded, and side by side the men walked quietly towards an open door.
Entering the spacious office, Bobby closed the door behind him as Dean took a seat by the large, oak desk. Taking a moment to look around the room, the Detective took a deep breath as he tried to get himself accustomed to the new surroundings. Photo frames filled with smiling faces adorned the wooden space in front of him. He could only assume that it was the family of the older man who he would be reporting into.
"Dean, I was sorry to hear about Benny," the Captain started, taking his place in his plush office chair opposite him before he steepled his fingers. "Terrible situation."
“Thank you,” Dean acquiesced, taking in the grim expression on Bobby’s grizzled features. He appreciated the concern, but was hoping that he wouldn’t be expected to go into too much detail. He wasn’t sure he felt quite ready enough to discuss what happened in depth with a stranger, even if he did mean well.
“Losing one of our own is always a deep blow,” the elder man continued, “And for it to be your partner while you were on a case must make it even harder to bear. I have lost a few colleagues…” Bobby’s words trailed off as he realised Dean was fidgeting in his seat, loosening his tie with his right hand, the fingers of his left hand drumming against the wooden arm of the chair.
“Anyway, I digress,” he went on, mentally kicking himself for making the new Detective feel uncomfortable, “I’m sure you’ll fit right in here. I trust your new accommodation is to your liking?”
Dean was happy that the subject had been changed. As Bobby had been speaking, he could feel his heart rate begin to raise, his palms getting sweaty. He wondered briefly if the Captain had noticed, and that was why he had stopped talking. If that was the case, Dean knew he needed to get himself in check. He could not perform his duties correctly if he couldn’t bring himself to talk about Benny. Even though no one else in the precinct knew his real identity except his superiors, it was enough that Bobby asking him questions had made him react this way for him to realise he may need to take the force up on the offer of a therapist.
“Yes, yes thank you Sir. It’s very nice,” Dean lied. The small apartment he had been supplied was in a rough part of town, above a liquor store, but he was grateful for the relative safety the tiny rooms afforded him.
“Okay so,” his new Captain went on, “I’ll introduce you to the team, using your assumed name of course. They’re a good bunch. A few mavericks that need to be reigned in now and again, but besides that, they behave themselves most of the time.”
Raising from his seat, Bobby buttoned his jacket as he walked past Dean towards the door. He opened it and gestured for the younger man to exit the stuffy office.
He was led through a corridor into a bustling investigation room. Numerous staff were typing away on keyboards, the clack of their fingers creating a cacophony of different rhythms. Desk phones were ringing loudly, most of them being ignored. A large white board containing photographs of suspects in the particular case they were currently investigating stood at the front of the room, words written in different colours of magic marker, some circled, some underlined filling in the gaps between images.
Dean followed his superior as he moved between the desks, the occupants standing up as the Captain passed, nodding at him briefly before taking their seats again and getting on with whatever work they had been doing. Some of them glanced at Dean as he walked closely behind, others ignored his presence.
It was clear that Bobby ran a tight ship and was well respected by his subordinates. The fact that they stood up when he approached their work station was a surprise to Dean, as this was not something anyone did for Rufus back in Lawrence, but he made a mental note to remember this in future.
The duo had reached the desk of an attractive blonde police woman. Her face was open and pleasant, a bright smile on her lips. She rose to her feet, as Bobby introduced her.
“Detective Donna Hanscum, this is Detective Jon Elliott.”
“Pleased to meet ya,” she said, holding her hand out. Dean shook it, warming to her friendly demeanour straight away.
“I’ll leave you in Donna’s capable hands,” the Captain told him, “come by my office before you leave for the evening.”
As Bobby turned away, Donna pulled a chair out and patted it. “Take a seat.”
“Coffee?” she offered, her eyes moving towards a vending machine in the corner of the room. “It’s not gourmet, but it does the job.”
Dean was relieved. He was desperate for some caffeine. “Please. Black, no sugar.”
“You betcha.”
As Donna prepared the beverage, Dean took in more of his surroundings. The staff were a mixture of uniformed and plain clothes officers, male and female, young and old. Some were busy on their desktops, others were leaning back in their seats, cellphones to their ears. Food was being consumed at work stations, papers were being shuffled, names were being yelled.
It was so different to what Dean was used to, but he liked it. It distracted the tumultuous thoughts that haunted him, even in his waking hours.
Donna, returning to her desk, brought him out of his reverie. He took the plastic cup gratefully and gingerly sipped the tepid liquid. She was right. It was far from gourmet, muddy tasting and luke warm, but it provided the caffeine hit he really needed right now.
“Nasty right?” Donna chuckled, obviously noticing Dean’s disdainful expression.
“It’s fine,” he smirked, placing the cup down.
“So, Jon,” Donna said, turning her body towards him, “What brings you here?”

Summary: The only ghosts and demons are the ones inside his head. Fresh from a prematurely-ended stint at an inpatient psychiatric facility, ‘former’ self-harmer and functional alcoholic Dean Winchester returns to Sioux Falls, where he works as a crime journalist. His editor, Bobby Singer, sends him back home to Lawrence to gather the story on the murder of a teen boy and the recent disappearance of another. Painful memories from growing up resurface as the missing boy turns up horrifically dead and another goes missing. The investigation is further complicated by the town’s gossipy tight-knit nature, Dad’s judgment, and botched attempts at making inroads with his estranged half-family, Kate and Adam Milligan. Dean crosses paths with Castiel Novak, a renegade detective from Kansas City with a troubled past of his own. As they work together, they slip past each other’s defenses, unearthing each other’s secrets and digging for the truth. As it turns out, monsters just might be real—and they just might live at home. A Sharp Objects-inspired AU.
Excerpt: A dumpy parking lot, leaning against Baby’s hood, looking to the stars—it reminds Dean of doing the same with the football jocks. The way he’d smuggle stolen beer cans in Dad’s jacket pocket, turning him from ‘homo’ to ‘hero’ in their eyes. Stupidly, it reminds him of Lee. Dean sneaks a glance over at Cas’ profile, tracing the angle of his jaw as he tilts his head up. The same stupid butterflies flap in his stomach. He suffocates them with a few swigs. “So, our arrangement. I’ll answer a question for each one you answer,” Cas offers, his adam’s apple bobbing. “Deal.” “What was it like growing up in Lawrence?” Dean whistles. “Starting with hardballs, huh? You don’t pull any punches.” “Would you rather I ask for your favorite color?” Cas teases. He groans. “No, none of that grade school shit. Gimme the real scoop.” Cas raises a pointed brow. You first. “Alright, Lawrence.” He sighs, bracing himself. “Mom had… my brother when I was four.” His voice wavers slightly when he brings up Sammy. “Adam is much younger, though, isn’t he?” “Different brother, Kate’s my stepmom. Me and Sam, we’re our Mom’s. She died when Sam was six months old. House fire.” Cas’ eyes sadden, but he doesn’t say anything. “But, as far as growing up—normal, I guess. Went to the school district nearby, was in wrestling for a little bit. I wasn’t some prodigy but I did okay, grades-wise.” “I bet you were Mr. Popular.” Dean barks a laugh. “Uh, no. Sorta depends on who you ask.” Depends on what year. “After graduation, I left for college.” Dean skips over the rest of the highlight reel. “And Sam?” “Hey, you gotta answer at least one question first,” Dean pokes him. “Why is a detective from Kansas City down in Lawrence?” “My supervisor likes to send me out on solo cases for assists. I don’t exactly work well with others.” “Well, you and I make a pretty good team—a little chaotic, maybe, but at least we ruled two suspects off your list.” “That we did. It’s a shame you’re not a detective.” “Reporters are detectives of sorts. We both look for narrative, just in different ways.” Cas gives a thoughtful hum. “My turn again. What happened to Sam?” Dean’s throat convulses. “He died. We were in our teens.” “What happened?” “He was sick all the time. One day, he just… kept getting worse. His body couldn’t take it.” Sammy’s ghost observed them, sadly, flickering in an in-between state. “I’m sorry, Dean.” They sit in silence for a few moments. Panic builds in Dean’s chest, and he worries that he’s ruined whatever rapport they’d been building. “I’ll tell you something if you swear to not tell another soul?” Dean nods, relief settling over him. He eats secrets for breakfast. “The real reason I work Homicide is because it’s better than what I used to do.” “What’s so bad that working Homicide is better?” Cas looked down and didn’t answer.

Your Savior
Pairing: Cop!Dean Winchester x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~1.9k
Warnings: angst, being taken hostage at gunpoint, fearful of your life
Request by @jessicalynnann: What about cop/detective dean and him and the reader are in an established relationship and she owns a cute little bakery… well what if something happens like she gets attacked but doesn’t tell him and he finds out and is upset but comforts her…
Summary: You have a little bakery that is your pride and joy and a boyfriend on the police force who you're so proud of. He doesn't have a lot of dangerous cases until one day, three gunmen decide to take a bank hostage. A bank that is a couple of blocks from your bakery.
Square Filled: criminal au (2022) for @spnaubingo
Author’s Note: any and all comments are appreciated <3
x
You have to bake two dozen cupcakes, a two-tier cake, and a half dozen cookies before the end of the day and you’re working as hard as you can to get that done. You have flour on your apron and face, quiet music is playing from your speaker, and you have your hands elbow-deep in a bowl of batter.
The bell on the front door rings signalling someone walked into your bakery store, and you try to peek out of the room to see who it is.
“I’ll be right with you!” you call out. “Give me one minute!” The person doesn’t wait for you to come out to them so they walk into the kitchen. You’re about to yell at them when you see who it is. “Dean!”
“Hey, sweetheart,” he grins.
Dean is a respected cop that everyone knows. He has been on the force since eighteen, and he’s only gone up from there. He walks behind the counter and kisses you even though some of the flour gets on his face.
“What are you doing here?”
“What, I can’t stop by my girlfriend’s bakery?” You raise an eyebrow at him and he laughs. “No, I just wanted to say hi on my break.”
“Hi,” you smile. “Today has been hectic and I haven’t been open for nearly an hour. I just got this big order in for a birthday party this weekend. I’m trying to get as much as I can done so I don’t have to do it later.”
“Where’s Maria?”
“Coming in late. She has a sick kid at home, and her husband won’t be able to pick him up until after ten.”
“I was going to take you out for lunch but I can come here.”
“No, Maria can hold down the fort for an hour. I’d love to go out to lunch with you.”
“Okay.” He grabs one of the fresh muffins you made and takes out a ten dollar bill which he sets on the counter. “I’ll be back at twelve.”
“Hey, I don’t need your money.”
“It’s stealing. I’m a cop. I uphold the law,” he grins. He leans down and kisses you. “I love you.”
“I love you, too!”
Right before Maria shows up, your bakery filled with customers who are hungry for your sweets. With her at the register, you can focus on the big order which you’re almost done making the batter for. This whole bakery idea is all because of Dean. When you two were in high school, he encouraged you to continue bake. The school held a bunch of bake-offs which you participated in, and everyone fell in love with your food.
Starting junior year of high school, you started selling your baked goods for cheap until you got orders from practically everyone. His family owned a section of a building in the mall for their seasonal work, so they let you use it when they weren't. When Dean became a cop, you made cookies and cupcakes for all the officers in the office.
Being a cop is something you wished Dean didn’t pursue because it’s a very dangerous job, and you’re always worried that he’s not going to come home. He’s mostly a beat cop who does a lot of desk work and will occasionally do the big things like drug busts and hostage situations but those are far in between.
You don’t like it but you know he’s the best person for the job. He’s determined, he loves helping people who can’t help themselves, and he has a passion for the job. Just like you.
Noon comes faster than you think it does, and you start to clean your work space so that when you return from lunch, you can start with a clean area. Dean walks in through the front door just as you’re finishing up.
“Y/N, Dean is here,” Maria calls from the front.
“Coming!” You put the dirty rags in the small hamper and take off your dirty apron. There is some flour on your clothes but not enough to cause you to not go out in public. That’s the reality of being a baker. You have flour on everything you wear. “Where are we going?”
“Razzio’s.”
“Italian food. Yum,” you giggle. “I’ll be back in an hour.”
“Have fun!” Maria smiles.
Razzio’s is located in the same block as your bakery so you two walk over there. The owner knows Dean from when he stopped a robbery fromt aking place, so now he gets free meals and discounts when he comes in. Dean still pays full price for the food even though Razzio doesn’t always take it.
“Dean! Welcome in!” Razzio greets.
“Hey, Raz. Got a table for me?”
“Of course. Window okay?”
“Perfect.”
Dean likes to try everything on the menu so he has Razzio cook him up something new every week without ordering, and every week, you end up loving what he brings to the table. It’s not unusual for Razzio not to lay menus down for you.
“So, I was thinking this weekend, we can take some time off,” Dean says.
“Like a getaway?”
“Yeah. My family has a cabin up north that I’d love to take you to.”
“It will be nice to relax instead of worrying about what orders I need to prepare for next week.”
“See? Win-win.”
“You’re a dork,” you giggle and kiss him.
Razzio is perfect like always, and you walked away with a free meal. What Razzio doesn’t take, Dean leaves as a tip for him. You walk back to your bakery hand-in-hand with a full stomach and a happy heart. You reach his police car when the radio he has strapped to his shoulder crackles to life.
“Unit 27, I got a 10-31 in progress. All three subjects appear to be armed. Please respond.”
10-31. You’ve been with Dean long enough to know that it’s a robbery. Subjects being armed means they have guns.
Dean grabs the small radio and presses the button to respond back.
“Unit 27 responding.” He turns to you. “I gotta go.”
“Please be careful.”
“Always,” he winks.
He kisses you goodbye and hops into his police cruiser. You watch him peel out of the parking lot before going back inside. It seems like not a lot of people have come in while you were gone so nothing bad happened. You resume your baking in the kitchen and slide in two batches of cupcakes into the oven when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Something isn’t right.
You walk carefully to the closed kitchen door and peer out of the small window to see three men with big guns inside the store. Maria and the other customers huddle together in fear. Are these the three subjects the same ones that the dispatcher was warning Dean about? How did they escape? Why did they come here? Are they looking to steal some food?
You take your phone out and dial Dean’s personal cell and place it to your ear. Pick up, Dean, pick up. Come on, pick up. You get his voicemail because he’s probably busy with the situation he got called away on.
“Dean, I need you here. There are three men with big guns in the bakery. Please hurry. They might be--”
“Hey!”
You look up and lock eyes with one of the suspects. You quickly hang up and duck down but he has already seen you. The man storms into the kitchen and grabs your arm tightly. You’re thrown off balance that your phone is dropped when he drags you out where everyone else is. You don’t struggle to get away in fear of being shot and let them tie you up.
“Are you the owner?” the leader asks. You nod because you have tape over your mouth. “Where’s the money?” You shake your head and he cocks his weapon. “Where’s the fucking money?!”
You mumble something underneath the tape, and one of the them rips it off you.
“Fuck,” you hiss at the pain. “I don’t have a lot of money. You’re wasting your time here.”
“No, you see, I know you have money. I see you leave this store every day with a bag full of it. Where is it?”
“Not here.”
Like hell you’re going to tell them there is a big safe hidden behind a picture frame in the abc with a bunch of cash stored there. You have most of the cash in the bank but you keep a chunk of it here for emergencies only. You’re not going to give them your hard earned money.
“Okay.” The leader points his gun at you and Maria cries where she sits. “You have until the count of three to tell me where the money is or I blow your fucking head off. Deal?”
The fear has sunk in and you start crying not only for you but for everyone else here. MAria is such a good mother and wife, she doesn’t deserve to be killed. Every customer in here has a life, someone they go home to. You cna’t do that to them. You have no idea if Dean got your message so you can’t rely on him to be here and save you.
“One.”
You look up to answer when you spot someone moving behind him. You look and see Dean’s beautiful green eyes looking into yours. He has four other cops with him that snuck in through the back.
“Two.”
He puts a finger to his mouth to tell you to keep quiet, and you look back at the man who is threatening you with a gun.
“Thr--”
“Wait! I’ll tell you!” you gasp.
“I’m waiting.”
“Okay. If I tell you, you let them go. They have nothing to do with this,” you gesture to the other hostages.
“We’ll see. Where’s the fucking money?”
You look behind the three gunmen and notice Dean and the other cops come out quietly with their guns out.
“Right behind you.”
The leader turns right into the barrel of Dean’s gun. He goes to raise his own to fight but notices the other four cops with guns on them. They are outnumbered and they don’t want to die.
“Man, you three were hard to catch. Why’d you come here?” Dean chuckles. “Lower your weapons. All of you. Turn around with hands behind your backs.”
The three men do as they’re told, and three officers put them in handcuffs. Another ones goes over to the hostages and starts to get the out of their ties while Dean rushes over to you.
“Oh, my God, Dean,” you cry.
“I’m right here, baby. You’re okay. You’re safe now.” Once free, you get up and run into his arms. You break down crying and he smoothes down your hair in comfort. “I’m right here. You’re okay now.”
One of the cops calls for backup so that the gunmen are taken away in three separate cars. Paramedics come to check everyone out, and the money that the gunmen took is being processed to return back to its owners.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” Dean asks.
“Yeah. They didn’t hurt us. Well, one of them grabbed my arm hard but I don’t think it’s enough to form a bruise. I didn’t think you got my message. I didn’t think you were coming.”
“I will always come. I will always be here to protect you,” he promises.
