been thinking a lot (for years tbh) about how the default standard global calendar is christian in origin (and specifically catholic, i know for example that russia refused to adopt the gregorian calendar until the revolution) and how…difficult it is to come up with an alternative that is secular and also free of any like, particular other baggage but i still wonder what a practical solution might look like
personally i think we should start with a system similar to the ancient greeks who oriented the calendar around equinoxes and solstices, @hinotorihime recently wrote a post about why the greek zodiac is like that and why there’s no secret new 13th zodiac sign—
anyway i think having a solstice as the first day of the year is a good idea. gut instinct says winter solstice in the northern hemisphere but that is obviously biased toward the northern hemisphere so i think either of the two solstices would work, we can have every country vote on which. i think there’s arguments for either (also for the equinoxes! but i personally prefer the idea of a solstice)
and so whichever solstice we go with, that’s day 1 of month 1. and with two solstices in a year and two equinoxes, we can also then have 4 easy “anchor points” for how to divide the year up, which is a pretty old way of doing things if you use a solar calendar
(lunar calendars also good but i think solar calendars make things a hair easier for climate scientists and historians and so on, + would be easier to transition from the current system for many people)
i also think we should adopt the jewish calendar way to deal with the fact that a year is actually not 365 days, where we just add a whole leap month some years tho don’t ask me to do math on how that would work in a new system lol. leap month should be like a global chill out month imo, all conflicts would need to do a month long ceasefire, limited hours of work, etc etc.
the real tricky thing imo, if we want to design a calendar relatively free of Baggage, is finding a base year to count from. it’s hard to find a year that’s actually universally significant and such. 1945 in the current system is a year that comes to mind as a possibility (radioactive fallout reasons). or you could just start over from the year the new calendar is implemented.
naming months is another difficulty and officially for the sake of trying to be as neutral on a global scale as possible you could do the japanese thing of just saying “month 1” “month 2” etc. locally you could have different names for them which i think could lead to some fun linguistic stuff, like imagine if the us started calling months one thing but the uk called them something else….

Performance Art with New Media Technology [ASSIGNMENT 1]
For this assignment, I was tasked to do a case study on international and local artists who incorporated the use of new media technology with their performances. From these artists and their chosen work/performance, we can observe how the technology used improves the performance and how they can be improved in the future.
International artist chosen: PLAVE
Tumblr media
PLAVE is a five-member virtual idol group operating under a virtual entertainment company, VLAST.
They are known for using game engines and motion capture technology to track each member's gestures and facial expressions, similar to the concept of virtual YouTubers or Vtubers in short.
On March 12, 2023, PLAVE made their official debut. Focusing on music production in the Korean pop or K-pop music industry, they periodically release music albums and singles just like any other idol group.
Performance chosen: Hello, Asterum!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The concert took place over two days, 13th - 14th April 2024 with the first day being a fully physical performance and the second day being an online performance that was simultaneously aired live online for international viewers.
Domestic fans in South Korea were able to purchase tickets to enter the concert venue during the performance day. Meanwhile international fans were given the option to purchase online tickets for the online streaming scheduled for the second day via Weverse, an entertainment platform originated from South Korea.
They performed live on both days as seen by the clear discrepancies when comparing the two performances side by side, with the pre-recorded videos or VCR being filler segments played in between singing performances.
Technology used:
Motion capture
3D Assets
LED Screens
Stage special effects (pyrotechnics, smoke and haze machines, confetti and streamers, bubbles, drones)
Sound system
Local artist chosen: Abdul Shakir
Tumblr media
Known by his stage name "Grasshopper," Abdul Shakir is a multidisciplinary multimedia artist and one of the co-founders of Filamen, a company that specializes in interactive installations, light installations, and projection mapping.
He has experience working in production and post-production agencies and has completed a range of design and art-related projects, including interactive installations, motion graphics, graphic design, and projection mapping.
His projects have transcended Malaysia and are now being shown in China, Hong Kong, Spain, and the United States of America. He has shown his art in a number of prestigious exhibitions, including the George Town Festival, Rainforest in the City, Urbanscapes Art Festival, and LAMPU Festival.
Work chosen: Rimbun
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Rimbun” was showcased during the Singapore Night Festival exhibition back in 2023. This work is basically a form of organic projection where he experiments with the mapping process on living things, including trees and leaves.
For this exhibition, it is focused on projection mapping of cultural Malay designs personally created by Abdul Shakir himself on plant leaves of different plants during the night time.
Featuring seven distinct motifs inspired by plants like Starfruit, Nutmeg, Common Fig, Jujube, Sugarcane, Citron, Cocoa, and Guava, these motifs reflect his personal interpretation of these plants and their significance during Singapore's role as an entrepôt between east and west.
Technology used:
Projector
PC computer
Rendered plant motifs via TouchDesigner
How does New Media Technology Improve the Concept and Stage Performance?
From the implementation of new media technology in performances which are the usage of motion capture technology and projection mapping, they offer the possibility to enhance their storytelling and visual graphics as a whole for a more enjoyable experience.
Visual elements prepared using computer graphics, not limited to pictures and videos but including various multimedia elements such as motion capture and projection mapping allow performers to creatively express themselves and their artworks while being able to captivate the audience.
For example, in “Hello, Asterum!” PLAVE and VLAST were able to utilize the visuals in 3D space effectively, resulting in their performance to look like a projection of a hologram while they were in fact only using a flat screen.
Another instance is the ability to manipulate the space to fit each member’s solo performance, creating environments that fit the genre of the songs being performed.
Being able to manipulate 3D space with their virtual models allows PLAVE to showcase an alluring and captivating stage performance in real time, suitable with their concept of being virtual idols.
As for the idea of organic projection mapping as seen in “Rimbun”, I would say that it promotes the idea of seeing mundane things in our lives in a new light.
As Abdul Shakir mentioned that the patterns and motifs being projected were inspired by plants, it shows a connection shared between the man-made motifs and the plants being associated with, subtly showing the beauty and inspiration from nature.
In my opinion, it is a unique way to show how one element may be related to the other and a great medium for an entrancing storytelling since the audience will need to approach the installation in order to fully immerse themselves with the artwork.
How can it be innovative in the future?
Simply put, stage performance visuals are no longer limited to 2D space as they can be manipulated to be shown as 3D regardless of the projecting medium.
Organic projection can introduce a new method to showcase one’s creativity in storytelling, ensuring that the message conveyed can be understood.
Synchronized light projections via light sticks held by the audience in a large crowd may increase the immersion and elevate the experience during a stage performance.
Conclusion
As technology advances further with time, we can expect to see more implementation of new media technology in future performances.
Taking the opportunity to include and utilize them in stage performances especially may help to increase immersion for the audience and deliver a comprehensive and meaningful performance.
Hopefully, with new media technology, artists and performers are able to experiment with their creative freedom and in the end, bring forward inspiring and innovative works of art for us to understand and appreciate.

LET'S DO IT: Send your letters to Netflix on FRIDAY 13th. Details below.
Shared (with permission) from https://www.reddit.com/r/1899/
What?
Send physical letters to Netflix. I saw the idea in this post and its comments. Time to do it, isn't it?
[If I have missed an initiative that is already trying to put this into action, let me know below.]
Why?
More tangible than a petition (even though I also love the latter). Ideally, it could be picked up by some media outlets. Highly symbolic, a perfect fit for 1899. It shows we are a committed fanbase that is willing to go to great lengths to renew the show and ultimately recruit new viewers/advertise the show.
As individuals, it will take us only a couple of minutes to prepare. As a group, it could have a nice impact.
When?
Let's aim to get them in the mail on Friday, January 13th, wherever you are. This will mean that many will arrive at the same time, while others will flood in later in waves.
Some people mentioned that this is too soon. I understand, but I assume that many people will manage. I think it is important to keep the momentum up and do it fairly soon. So try to do it on Friday, but obviously it's also perfectly fine if you do it at a later time.
How?
I'll categorise this into subpoints as it has many facets.
Send to?
Most people in the comment seemed to consider the US headquarters the best target. Makes sense.
If you can do so, please send it to:
Netflix Corporate Headquarters 100 Winchester Circle, Los Gatos, CA 95032 United States
If this is not feasible for you (too expensive, ...), consider sending it to
Netflix Services Germany GmbH, Friedrichstraße 88 10117, Berlin Germany
How to design the letter?
I think it should be as simple as possible while being immediately recognisable. It would make sense to have one common element, while individually one may add to the content of the letter.
My suggestion for the element common to all letters: Write...
"What is lost, must be found" [so they look similar to how they are in the series; "must" to connect it to the renewal request] and
"#save1899"
... on the outside (backside) of the letter.
Make it positive: Hating Netflix won't bring us far. No hate, just show your affection for the series and creators.
To lower the barriers for those who wouldn't know what to write:
just focus on the envelope. The slogans above could be enough. Regarding the content: Maybe someone can post a template (containing 3 sentences or so that everyone can write)?
someone in the comments suggested this: "Dear Netflix, 1899 has the potential to be one of your staples and an exemplary display of creativity in storytelling and visual arts. Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese have already proven their ability to accomplish a fantastic show with Dark. Please reconsider your decision to cancel 1899, and give it another chance! #renew1899 #save1899 "
Contact media outlets
Media coverage would be beneficial. To achieve that, we should contact some media outlets that have covered 1899's cancellation already. This would be a heads-up in the sense: There's something coming, please watch out and maybe write an article. Some of them were:
Variety
NME
Hollywood Reporter
Deadline
CNET
Daily Mail
Collider
Vulture
Inverse
....
What to do next?
Spread the word (friends, other social media platforms); prepare
Help me:
if you have time, look up addresses (or think about where to send it)
I'll edit the post to add your research from time to time.
make suggestions for the design
remember though that it should be easy enough to implement for everyone - that's why I think a simple common element on the outside is good, while you can put whatever 1899-related you want on the inside
lookup media outlets and contact them (let others know in the comments); tell them that they may watch out for this and cover the story
Check out this post for further updates
Anything to add to this post??
Moderators: Should this post be supported by many people, could you pin it until Friday?
On Friday 13th: SEND!
Send as many as you feel comfortable with.

Fire Opal's List of Unusual Things We Liked about Miraculous Ladybug
Here is a not-so-short list of things Me and Pearl liked about Miraculous Ladybug.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng is a neuro-divergent teenage girl lead with a heavy amount of ego-centrism. There is strong evidence that she has some kind of anxiety disorder and autism.
Marinette's favorite color is pink and she likes sewing, but she's not condemned by the narrative as being too "girly". She is still strong and physically capable.
Adrien has many feminine traits, like being a model and being sensitive, but he's still a fencer and the brawler between the duo. He's unashamed of his more feminine qualities and takes pride in his goofier traits as Chat Noir. We also see the pressure on Adrien to be more stoic and mimic his father's unhealthy habits of coping through violence.
I enjoy that between the male and female lead, she, the female lead, Marinette, has the stronger association with the traditionally masculine libido while her counterpart, Adrien, is associated with the more traditionally feminine romance.
Speaking of which, when solving issues, Marinette tends to lean towards directly solving the problem and tries to control as many variables as possible. This is very traditionally masculine which contrasts nicely with Adrien's feminine methods where he'll empathize and attempt to solve situations with more privacy.
This fits well with their backgrounds since Adrien is from an upper class society where such solutions are commonplace and expected. Your reputation is a VERY BIG DEAL, but your ethics....not so much. Being confrontational is a big no-no in his circle.
Meanwhile, Marinette is autistic with extreme social anxiety. If she doesn’t see it, she doesn't know it happened, and if she doesn't see a blatant reaction, she doesn't think you care. Her directness is partially because of her autism, but she's also taken several lessons to heart about appearing heroic and being a good example so these are IMPORTANT.
Ladybug seems to hold herself to a high standard as a role model, something many a female role model may struggle with.
Adrien's abuse is written very realistically, and I believe his justifications until I take a step back. His position as a fashion model also puts him in the feminine role of being treated like eye-candy with many people forgetting that he is a person.
Marinette is biracial, but seems to have lost most of her connection to her Asian identity. This is later revealed as having to do with her mother not wanting her to face racism she did. Marinette does seem to WANT a connection or address her heritage on some level (considering her uncle and the designs implemented in her clothes) but frequently fails except with references in fashion. I can relate in some ways.
Chat Noir's hair looks fluffy.
Marinette's hair bounces very cutely and vaguely resemble an exposed ladybug butt about to fly. I would use biology terms, but those are boring and sterile. If you have ever seen a Ladybug fly, you know what I mean. If you have not, I am sorry. You missed a true joy of life.
Memorable akuma designs. I see it, and I know about their powerset and recognize them. If not, their link to the goal is clear once it's explained. (Ie. Reflekta wanted people to look at her and remember her. Well, they do THAT)
It has puns.
The Lucky Charms are used very creatively and in a way that promotes spatial intelligence in a manner not often encouraged in children. The only two things I've seen that resemble this is McGuyver, who uses waaaay too much trivia and chemistry to interest me, and the 13th child, who also emphasizes something similiar, in teaching a lesson on ways to view a piece of chalk as other than a piece of chalk, which encourages creativity and flexible thinking without the need to break out the chemistry textbook. Yet, between the two series, Miraculous does it better and more throughly.
I can plot both Gabriel Agreste and Adrien's character developments in a way that mostly makes sense with incoming seasons. It is very rich and entertaining. The speculation between me and Pearl is priceless.
The classmates have their own unique personalities which are put in the lime light frequently. So many of them are adorable, and there are so many ships BOTH me and Pearl agree on. Yay!
The akumas are born of people losing emotions in various ways and we are focused regularly on their plight, so we understand their pain and empathize with them. In a show where the main characters share masculine and feminine traits, it is important that empathy be emphasized.
Its interesting that the main villain intentionally weaponizes emotions and engages in toxic masculinity while also being head of a fashion company, a very feminine industry. His focus on how one is seen and normalization of Adrien being treated as eye-candy are also examples of an external representation of the pressure women feel as well.
In short, the villain is the most toxic qualities of society's view of gender. While the heroes reflect the stresses of the roles placed on their gender and have traits both traditionally masculine and feminine.

hi! i'm coming for your ace attorney/homestuck aus. you cannot hide in the tags. talk about them >:3
(only if you want ofc, no pressure, just a lot of interest)
lmao well if you insist~
(also shout out to my good buddy @jayljester / @jaylillustrates for being the main person I bounced ideas off of for this back in like.. 2020/2021 you should check them out their art is phenomenal)
so as I said before, there's actually three days. in order from least to most developed they are:
-attorneystuck
-turnabout alternia
-ace legislacerators
attorneystuck is your classic "what if x characters played sburb" story. have not thought much of it past that
turnabout alternia is a theoretical case wherein normal phoenix wright (and probably some other characters idk) get translated to alternia and have to defend one of the trolls (probably karkat) in a trial. I have no other details on this but terezi is probably either the prosecutor or the weird girl. think turnabout storm but instead of horses it's Homestuck.
ace legislacerators is the most developed & my favorite of the three. the idea behind it is sort of a rewrite of the ace attorney story line but on alternia? specifically an au alternia where humans and trolls live together. the impacts of this in society include reforms such as murder being actually illegal and frowned upon due to human influences, adults staying on alternia, trolls having actual family units, jobs such as legislacerator not actually being limited to one caste, etc etc. these changes are not pretty recent, probably being first implemented around/shortly before the tgaa era.
I feel I should also mention that by no means is the caste system gone. lower castes are still widely treated like garbage, and higher castes are still treated very well
for fun, here's a list of castes for the characters as I remember them bc again I have barely thought about this au in years :p (under the read more bc this post is already long)
Phoenix: indigo blood/human hybrid, explains why he's hardy enough to be able to withstand all the stuff he does
Edgeworth: Violet blood, he fishie :)
Larry: token human. just a normal guy.
Gumshoe: olive blood. I mean his jacket is already the perfect color
Von Karma: the von karma's are all teal bloods! they also hold the idea that as teals they are "natural hatched legislacerators" (aka Manfred is hemophobic despite not even being in that high of a caste)
Godot: as Diego Armando, he was a rust blood. but when he was poisoned they ended up filling him with teal blood! so diego=burgundy, godot=teal
Apollo: Apollo is a rust! he has normal horns AND hair horns so some people think he's a gold and get scared of his supposed psionics.
Gavin: If I recall correctly, the Gavins are both purple bloods. clown Gavins teehee. (klavier is probably more into the messiahs than kristoph, but I think both of them are very low-key about it)
Trucy: I don't actually remember trucy's caste but I *think* she was a burgundy? would make sense given. events. as well as her outfit as a kid being red.
Athena: She's an actual gold with psionics :) I never drew her, but my design concept for her involved her having four eyes, one for each color of the mood matrix.
Blackquill: I don't actually remember having one for him. Uhhhhh.. Ummm. Cobalt? yeah sure cobalt. taka is his "lusus" (even though lusii aren't actually parental figures anymore in this universe, they're more like pets but still have parental instincts)
Judge: purple blood. clown judge lol.
FEYS/KUHRA'IN ROYAL FAMILY:
so they're a special case. all people capable of spirit channeling or descendants of spirit channelers are a secret 13th caste... lavenders! in terms of hierarchy, lavenders would fall between violet and fuchsia (yes they are sea dwellers), but are generally unknown due to being mutants and also being a very very small caste. only some lavenders can channel spirits, just like how only some cobalts can mind control, only some burgundies have telekinesis, & only some golds have psionics. so yeah. all the feys are fish ladies :) (to explain why dahlia was able to cut ties from the feys, she simply just faked being a violet, shrimple as that)

ALL ABOUT DESIGN PATTERN
A design pattern [1,2] is a specific method to solve a specific object-oriented software problem, realizing a more simple and convenient reuse of successful designs and architectures. Design patterns are widely used in the modern software industry to reuse best practices and improve the quality of software systems [3]. Nowadays, software engineers have a greet tendency to use design patterns (DPs) because they are considered to have an important role in software engineering in the sense that they can make the understanding of nonentities easier [4]. When a software is conducted, it needs to be carefully architected and designed to get benefitted from the inherent features of software quality [5].
Software design patterns have a considerable impact on the software development life cycle [6]. According to Dave Cohen a developer who find design pattern intriguing, the applicability at the third level (feature) is the “sweet spot.” They shine at encapsulating business logic, memory management, server calls, and much more [7]. Creational Design Pattern is an unlimited scope to recreate Geographical Area Objects without restrictions, developers would use different types of creational design patterns to cook an object in an orderly and sophisticated manner [8]. Structural design patterns focus on organizing classes and objects [9] to form larger, more flexible software structures. These patterns facilitates the composition of objects and define relationships between them to achieve system structural integrity. By emphasizing object composition, inheritance, and interface implementation, structural patterns promote code reusability, and maintainability, and scalability [10]. Multiple research papers involving Behavioral design pattern [11] which have been proven of how have it became an important form in addressing major societal challenges.
Recent studies on design patterns 202-2024 underscore their significant role in enhancing software quality, adaptability, and performance. For instance, a systematic review highlights how design patterns can improve code readability, maintainability, and reusability, which are crucial for larger, object-oriented systems [12]. This is especially relevant in modern domains like microservices and machine learning applications, where modularity and scalability are essential. Research indicates that design patterns offer effective architectural solutions, particularly in complex systems with high performance and reliability demands. For example, in microservice-based architectures, design patterns support optimal resource use and scalability by structuring system components to handle increasing workloads efficiently [13].
To discover more about design pattern, here are some sites for you to learn them:

Pulverizer 13th devlog: Off goes the head
After I finished writing part 12 this month, I decided to start work on what I worried to be a complicated mechanic, that being the Execution system. I was mostly worried with how it would look, along with the many technical questions. But first I had some things to do in preparation for that, mainly adding the code and animation’s for melee and charged attack’s, since I gutted the code and they’re required to even start executions. I added back the old function’s for hit detection and damage, cleaned it up for animation’s and added a little charging SFX. With that done I got to work on the actual executions, starting with trying to imagine what I want. I had the idea of making one animation of an entire execution, make the player teleport to the right position and play it. So I got started by creating an animation for the katana and try to add it into the game, but that’s when I came across two problems. First one being the fact that I cannot create one whole animation with two characters, blender just doesn’t allow two armatures in one animation, I had to mix two animation’s and stitch them together. And that’s when I came across my second issue of it just not mixing well with the game, everything else is multidirectional so why shouldn’t the executions be as well? After the failure of the first test I began to have a better Idea for executions The actual 3d animation will be one direction, but it will correspond with the direction both enemy and player are facing. When you get an enemy into an executable state, the enemy plays a looping animation. When the execution start’s the enemy looks at the player as it dashes to the first point, point’s are just the direction from the enemy to the player multiplied by a distance. With that I can play a sequence of animation’s and use a tool to get the position and timing right, thus the execution is done. Implementing it took a bit of time since it all required IEnumator’s, which can be tricky and hard to debug if not done correctly. Bug after bug later I got too see my animation mixed together and It looked quite nice, so I decided to implement it ingame which also became its own can of worms. One issue was trying to figure out how to determine an Execution to play since it required knowing the enemy, weapon and player character. As a temporary solution, I assigned myself to fate and that it will bite me in the ass later. I decided the best course was just add the weapon and enemy and throw out the playable characters entirely for now. After that and rewriting several lines of code I got it to work and was quite happy with the result even if it’s unfinished. I decided to also add a death animation to the player which was quite easy. By then I felt it was time to begin to push the demo out, so I started work on two things in parallel.
First one being a redesign of the one and only playable games in the game, I never liked her original Design and felt off by it. I begin the redesign with coming up with a background for the character with my original idea for her being an assassin/spy/ninja/whatever. Soon after looking at definition’s I decided hired hitman was the best profession, with the backstory that she worked for a lot of illegal companies and one of them snitch for a plea deal. I begin by modifying the colors sense the old design had an issue where the colors of the hand would blend with the body. So I made the body gray while the arms and legs are black to add contrast, and also got rid of the glasses sense they never appeared right when pixelated. Afterward I decided to try out the idea of having little armored plates mainly on the back and chest, I liked the design since it made practical sense while still looking flexible. Afterward I decided to create a backup and experiment with some accessories I came up with that had stiff consequences, mainly getting rid of the mirror modifier. When I added the armored plates, I decided to go into ms paint and add a female reference sheet I had and draw a quick design
Tumblr media
The design I came up with added mainly an eye patch, curved the hair a little and made the right arm cybernetic. I liked the idea sense I felt like it communicated her backstory, showing she’s something of an outlaw and had failed hit’s. Slowly I begin to add the cybernetic arm and features and other than a few nicknacks, I think it’s done for the most part.
Tumblr media
Second Thing I did while redesigning was some modifications to the animation pipeline. One of the first thing’s I did was make a preview camera, add it to a render texture and applied that texture to an image. Next up is render templates sense I had an issue of forgetting the size and camera and texture sizes. Which had occurred when doing event sizes of enemies like mechs and having to increase the texture/camera size to stop cutoff when falling down. After that to speed up the render process, I decided to make a tool where I have lists of animations with names and file locations. So I can press the run button and watch something while waiting for it to be done

13th July 2024 Enhancing Warehouse Efficiency: The Benefits and Challenges of ASRS in Malaysia's Emerging Market Explore how Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) enhance warehouse efficiency in Malaysia's emerging market. Discover the benefits, challenges, and strategies for successful adoption. Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) are advanced technologies used in warehouses to automate the storage and retrieval of materials. These systems perform tasks like putting items into storage or picking them out, designed to enhance or replace manual warehouse operations. In Malaysia, the adoption of ASRS is relatively new but is gaining traction as companies seek to improve productivity and reduce reliance on manual labor. Types of ASRS Unit-load ASRS Unit-load ASRS systems are designed to manage and handle large and heavy pallets and cases, typically weighing between 1,000 and 5,500 lbs. These systems are particularly useful where there is limited storage space available at the pallet level and where fast retrieval of items is of utmost importance. Mini-load ASRS Mini-load ASRS systems handle lighter loads weighing up to 75 lbs. Instead of dealing with large pallets, these systems use automated ASRS totes, trays, and cartons for storage and retrieval purposes. Examples of mini-load ASRS include: Shuttles: Used to handle cartons, trays, and totes in a warehouse. Horizontal and Vertical Carousels: Designed to handle small items using bins, rotating either horizontally or vertically. Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs): Consist of trays arranged in columns with inserters or extractors in between. Cube-based Storage: Items are stored in bins arranged in a grid of cubes, with robot pickers selecting bins and transporting them to specific workstations. Advantages of ASRS Improve Productivity Robots can operate continuously 24/7, driving significant productivity gains for warehouse operations. ASRS systems contribute to increased productivity by enabling workers to pick orders at a faster pace. Reduce Labour Reliance High staff turnover and labor costs, which make up a significant portion of the warehouse budget, can be mitigated by using ASRS. These systems replace the need for manual tasks, reducing labor requirements by up to two-thirds. Improved Safety By minimizing human errors, ASRS can enhance workplace safety and reduce the risk of accidents, addressing concerns about workplace accidents that result in disabilities or death. Avoid Pilferage ASRS can prevent theft and pilferage in warehouses, ensuring the security of valuable items. Minimize Mistakes ASRS machines are highly precise and reliable, achieving a 99.9% success rate in picking the right items, leading to higher customer satisfaction and reduced costs. Storage Space-Friendly ASRS systems optimize the use of vertical space, saving up to 85% of the original floor area, which is crucial for warehouses dealing with larger quantities of items. Disadvantages of ASRS High Upfront Cost Implementing ASRS involves a significant upfront cost, which can be a challenge for smaller businesses. Equipment leasing options can help reduce this initial investment. Budget for Maintenance ASRS requires regular maintenance and occasional repairs. While maintenance costs are typically lower than hiring staff, they should be considered before implementation. Operation Needs ASRS work best for operations with consistent, predictable, and repetitive tasks. Businesses dealing with a wide range of products that change frequently may find it challenging to integrate ASRS. Retrain Staff Implementing ASRS requires proper training for employees, which may result in downtime and potential staff turnover. Investing in training is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of ASRS. ASRS in Malaysia: Early Adoption Strategies As ASRS is relatively new in Malaysia, the following strategies can help in early adoption and successful integration:-
Awareness and Education Educating businesses about the benefits and potential ROI of ASRS is crucial. This can be achieved through industry seminars, workshops, and collaboration with trade associations to spread awareness about the advantages of ASRS. Government Incentives The Malaysian government can play a significant role by providing financial incentives, grants, or subsidies to encourage businesses to invest in ASRS. These incentives can help offset the high upfront costs and make the technology more accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Pilot Projects Implementing pilot projects in strategic industries can showcase the practical benefits of ASRS. These pilot projects can serve as case studies and provide valuable data and insights for other businesses considering the technology. Collaboration with Technology Providers Partnering with ASRS technology providers can facilitate smooth implementation. These providers can offer customized solutions, technical support, and training programs to ensure that businesses can effectively integrate ASRS into their operations. Workforce Training and Development Investing in comprehensive training programs for employees is essential. These programs should focus on operating and maintaining ASRS, ensuring that the workforce is well-prepared to handle the new technology. Local Adaptation ASRS solutions should be tailored to meet the specific needs and constraints of Malaysian warehouses. This includes considering local environmental conditions, types of goods commonly handled, and specific logistical challenges. Demonstrating ROI Highlighting the return on investment through detailed cost-benefit analyses and real-world examples can help businesses understand the long-term financial gains from adopting ASRS. Conclusion The implementation of ASRS in Malaysia represents a significant leap towards modernizing warehouse operations, enhancing productivity, and ensuring long-term cost savings. While the initial investment and need for specialized training present challenges, the benefits far outweigh the costs. By adopting early strategies such as government incentives, pilot projects, and strong partnerships with technology providers, Malaysian businesses can successfully transition to automated systems.
