Beyond Sugar: Surprising Factors Behind Tooth Decay Revealed
When we think of tooth decay, the first culprit that comes to mind is often sugar. And while it's true that sugar plays a significant role in the development of cavities, there are other surprising factors lurking in the shadows. Understanding these factors can empower us to take better care of our dental health and prevent issues before they arise.
Tumblr media
The Sugar Conundrum: A Familiar Enemy
Let's start with the obvious: sugar. Sugar is the primary fuel for the bacteria in our mouths that produce acids, which, in turn, erode tooth enamel and lead to decay. From sodas to candies, sugary treats are abundant in our diets, making them a major contributor to dental problems. However, it's not just the amount of sugar consumed but also the frequency that matters. Snacking on sugary foods throughout the day exposes our teeth to constant acid attacks, increasing the risk of decay.
Acidic Foods: A Stealthy Threat
While we often focus on sugar, acidic foods, and drinks can be just as damaging to our teeth. Foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and certain beverages such as fruit juices and carbonated drinks contain acids that weaken enamel over time. Even seemingly healthy habits like starting the day with a glass of orange juice or sipping on a sports drink can contribute to enamel erosion if consumed frequently. Therefore it’s essential to visit a reliable dentist regularly to closely monitor your dental health.
Poor Oral Hygiene: Ignoring the Basics
Neglecting proper oral hygiene practices is another factor that can significantly impact dental health. Inadequate brushing and flossing allow plaque to accumulate on teeth, providing a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Over time, this plaque hardens into tartar, which is much more challenging to remove and can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are essential for maintaining optimal oral health.
Dry Mouth: A Common Culprit
Saliva plays a crucial role in neutralizing acids and protecting teeth from decay. However, conditions like dry mouth, often caused by medications, certain medical treatments, or simply aging, can decrease saliva production, leaving teeth vulnerable to decay. Drinking plenty of water, using sugar-free gum or lozenges to stimulate saliva production, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine can help alleviate dry mouth symptoms and reduce the risk of tooth decay.
Genetics and Oral Health: The Unseen Influence
While lifestyle factors play a significant role in dental health, genetics also play a part in determining susceptibility to tooth decay. Some people may have naturally weaker enamel or be more prone to gum disease due to genetic factors. Understanding your genetic predispositions can help you take proactive steps to protect your oral health, such as maintaining a rigorous dental hygiene routine and seeking preventative care from a reputed dentist.
Preventative Dentistry: The Key to Long-Term Oral Health
Incorporating preventative dentistry into your oral health routine is essential for warding off tooth decay and other dental issues. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings allow your dentist to detect and address problems early on, preventing them from escalating into more significant issues. Additionally, your dentist can provide personalized recommendations based on your unique dental needs, whether it's fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel or dental sealants to protect vulnerable areas from decay.
Finding a Reliable Dentist: Your Partner in Oral Health
Choosing a dentist is crucial for maintaining good oral health throughout your life. A trustworthy dentist will not only provide quality care but also offer guidance and support to help you achieve and maintain a healthy smile. When selecting a dentist, look for qualifications, experience, and a compassionate demeanor that puts you at ease. Building a strong relationship with your dentist ensures that you receive the personalized care and attention you deserve.
While sugar undoubtedly plays a significant role in tooth decay, it's essential to recognize the other factors that contribute to dental issues. By understanding the impact of acidic foods, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, genetics, and more, we can take proactive steps to protect our oral health and prevent decay. Incorporating preventative dentistry into our routine and seeking care from a reliable dentist are key components of maintaining a healthy smile for years to come.

Best Dentist in Seattle, WA
Tumblr media
Best Dentist in Seattle, Washington is home to many experienced and qualified dental practitioners, making it a great place to find the best dentist for your needs. When searching for a dentist in Seattle, there are a few factors to consider to ensure that you find the right fit for you and your family.
One important factor to consider is the dentist's qualifications and experience. Look for dentists who are licensed and accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) and who have completed additional training in specific areas of dentistry such as cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry. Additionally, it's a good idea to check the dentist's online reviews, ask for referrals from friends and family and look at their website to see the services they offer.
Another important factor to consider is the dentist's areas of expertise. If you have a specific dental need, such as orthodontic treatment, dental implants, or cosmetic dentistry, it's important to find a dentist who is experienced and proficient in those areas. Additionally, if you have children, it's a good idea to find a dentist who specializes in pediatric dentistry, as they are trained to work with children and make them feel comfortable during dental procedures.
It's also important to consider the location and office hours of the dentist's practice. Look for a dentist whose office is conveniently located near your home or work and who offers office hours that fit your schedule. Additionally, check if they offer emergency services and if they accept your insurance.
Overall, finding the best dentist in Seattle can take some research, but by considering the qualifications, experience, areas of expertise, location, and office hours of different dentists, you can find a dental practitioner who meets your needs and provides high-quality care.

Swansea Sound share new 'Toxic Energy' single
Toxic Energy is a punk song, a pop song.  It’s also a duet between Terry Hall* and Elon Musk.  Terry (Hue Williams) still fears for his safety on the streets of the concrete jungle. Elon (Amelia Fletcher) does his best to make Terry’s anxieties worse.
The strange sound at the end of the songis a recording of a Tesla Cybertruck accelerating, losing control, and exploding.
The B-side, Dinosaur Bones, is a short song about species extinction.
The cassette comes in two versions, both with very special artwork. Mark James has designed the UK/German version for Skep Wax and Formosa Punk. Jimmy Ulvenes has designed the US version for Sm Craft Advisory.
*Terry Hall RIP.  The Specials’ 1979 track ‘Concrete Jungle’ was a perfect, honest expression of fear of neo-Nazis on the streets of the UK.  Terry later became famous in the US as the co-writer of ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ with Jane Wiedlin.  We salute him.
Swansea Sound reunite Hue Williams and Amelia Fletcher, the original singers of cult 1990s UK indie band The Pooh Sticks. Quickly becoming a popular fixture on the UK indie scene, Swansea Sound have released two acclaimed albums (Live At the Rum Puncheon and  Twentieth Century), and have recently recorded live sessions for 6Music (UK) and WFMU (US), as well as completing a tour of the US East Coast.
Described as ‘an indiepop miracle’ by All Music, Swansea Sound combine a witty, sardonic, very contemporary lyrical attack with timeless guitar-pop songwriting. Louder Than War declared them "An essential broadcast from the forefront of the indiepop resistance." The band hail from Swansea (Wales) and Kent (England).
The single precedes a tour of West Coast USA in October and the UK in November/ December.  The live experience is unmissable, with Hue and Amelia playing off each other, sometimes duetting, sometimes harmonising, always entertaining. Meanwhile the band (Rob Pursey – also Heavenly, Bob Collins – The Dentists, Ian Button - Death In Vegas) kick up an infectious melodic racket.
Track 1: TOXIC ENERGY
Track 2: DINOSAUR BONES

Another reason to use mouthwash: drinking flavored coffees.
A few years ago, I suddenly had several cavities, and one so deep that I needed to get a root canal treatment done and a crown. (Even though I'd been eating healthier and thought I was doing good.)
But I'd also gotten a lot of free coffee creamer that year. And the company told me to at least use it by the expiration date if I froze it. So... I was making lattes every other day. (And, after I'd gone to the dentist, I'd found an article online about widespread tooth decay in Seattle, WA, USA, caused by frequent visits to cafés. (Coffee is acidic, but healthy. Sugar eats enamel. And milk is sticky. Mixed together, it creates a sticky acid-goo.)
Lately, I've been using ACT mouthwash on days I drink coffee.
But if you get ACT, check the ingredients to make sure it doesn't have alcohol because the last bottle I got did. (The green bottle I'd been getting is alcohol free, but the blue bottle I got last time had it hidden in the inactive ingredients list.)
Okay listen I have another disability related thing that’s important!!
If you have any disabilities linked to tooth decay/erosion, through direct cause or secondary symptom, it is vital that you get one or both of the following items: Sensodyne toothpaste and enamel repair mouthwash
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This includes health conditions such as acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid conditions, fibromyalgia, chronic pain & mental illnesses such as depression that create poor hygiene routines, sensory issue disorders like autism and ADHD, and any health condition that causes frequent vomiting / increased stomach acid, including eating disorders and migraines.
All of these disabilities will erode the enamel of your teeth, not only opening you up to cavities but making it very easy to chip your teeth from such simple things as biting the wrong way on the tines of a fork. (I’ve chipped my teeth at least 4 times this way).
The toothpaste on the left here (sensodyne pronamel) is gentle on your teeth, won’t cause painful sensations from any extreme mint flavor, and will even protect your gums if they’re sensitive from any of these conditions.
The mouthwash on the right (Crest enamel repair) will, as it says, repair your enamel — which is marvelous, because the technology to repair your enamel at all is relatively very new to society! — but it is most importantly non-alcoholic. Meaning that it works well as a once-a-day rinse without any of the burning sensations of antiseptics that typically discourage people with sensory issues from taking care of their teeth.
I know remembering to do these things every day can feel like a lot when you’re sick and exhausted, but I promise a collective three minutes out of every day is going to save you an incredible amount of pain and money in the future. If your teeth are susceptible enough to rot, you can actually die from infection. And as they say, with how little insurance actually covers dental —
Not brushing your teeth??
In THIS economy???

Dr. Rosalie Reddick Miller (December 29, 1925 - October 17, 2005) was the first African American woman dentist to practice in the State of WA. She attended the all-black public schools in Columbus, Georgia, and received a BA from Fisk University. She enrolled at Meharry Medical College and received her DDS. Returning to Columbus, she took over her father’s dental practice, and her husband, Dr. Earl V. Miller, began a practice of general medicine. During the early 1950s and before the civil rights movement, she and her husband fought discrimination and segregation in Nashville. She was an active participant in the struggle for voting rights and spearheaded a voter registration movement among African Americans in the city. After moving with her husband to the University of Iowa, she received a certificate in periodontology and he received board certification in urology. She served on the faculty teaching dental hygiene. She practiced dentistry in Seattle at the Group Health Dental Cooperative. She received an MPH from the University of Washington. She served as director of dental programs for the Community Health Board of Model Cities. She was an Assistant Professor of Dentistry at the University of Washington in the Department of Oral Medicine. Despite these professional accomplishments, her greatest pride was in being the mother of five children and in being married to the same man for more than 50 years. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CmwEXMcrcSz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Need To Visit An Emergency Dentist In Seattle and Shoreline, WA
It is important to rush to the ER when the toothache or bleeding from the gums and mouth will not go away usually. The persistence of pain and discomfort has the individual awake all night and writhing in agony. Instead of trying to pry and poke through the pain, it is best to visit an emergency dentist in Seattle and Shoreline, WA, without delay. The patient does not have to go to the hospital or medical facility’s ER in such instances. It is best to call the emergency contact number of a reputed dentist nearby and inform that a patient is en route to the clinic. Sure, toothache or injury of the oral cavity may seem to be an emergency to the person experiencing pain and inflammation of the gums, but a dental emergency usually includes the following conditions:
· Excruciating Toothache- This can occur due to injuries or inflammation and infection. The best way to tend to it so it subsides enough is to rinse the mouth with warm water. Flossing the teeth to remove any food particles is advisable, too. Moreover, the swollen cheek may be countered with a cold compress against the swollen area from the outside. Consuming OTC pain-reducing drugs may help to manage the pain until the dentist is ready to be with the patient.
· Cracked Tooth- Again rinsing the oral cavity with warm, saline water will help. Moreover, the broken parts of the tooth should be preserved carefully when the patient is rushed for emergency treatment. Pressing a clean gauze to the injured area may stop the bleeding as well. The application of a cold compress on the cheek is sure to bring the swelling down to a degree.
· The Broken Tooth- This is common, especially among children injured when playing. Fisticuffs among adults or accidents may result in losing a tooth, too. Sure, the bleeding must be arrested immediately. It is essential to retrieve the knocked-out tooth carefully and rise off the mud and dirt on it. Pushing into the socket before arriving at the emergency dentist’s clinic is a good idea. The patient may also put the loose tooth in milk and carry it to the dentist to be inserted back into the socket.
· Dental Abscess—Small swollen areas at the root of teeth and between two teeth are known as an abscess of the gum. This severe condition may damage the tissue and dislodge the teeth from their normal position. It is caused by infection and requires immediate treatment. Failing to treat it properly is likely to result in inflammation of the face and lower jaw, too. Rinsing the oral cavity with warm saline water several times will subside the pain and reduce the inflammation sufficiently for a dental checkup.
Visiting an emergency dentist in Seattle and Shoreline, WA, is also necessary when a severe soft tissue injury occurs to the cheeks, jawline, tongue, gums, and lips.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE AND AFTER INVISALIGN TREATMENT?
That you consider Invisalign treatment confirms you have crooked, gapped, and misaligned teeth, making it challenging for you to maintain proper oral hygiene and requiring frequent treatments from the dentist near you for issues like tooth decay and gum disease. While your decision to seek treatment needs commendation, are you confident whether you have a minor or significant problem with your teeth? If not, wouldn’t you benefit by seeking advice from an expert instead of deciding on Invisalign or any other orthodontic treatment?
Invisalign Treatment: Why and How It Is Done?
Invisalign treatment is an alternative to traditional orthodontics, where treatments are provided using metal brackets and wires. Traditional braces have been around for over a century and are effective solutions for straightening misaligned teeth and shifting them into their correct positions. Invisalign treatment also achieves a similar goal, although the treatment remains virtually invisible in your mouth. Invisalign braces are created from dental-grade BPA-free clear plastic that fits snugly over your teeth to achieve the same goals as traditional braces.
It would help if you didn’t think you qualify for Invisalign treatment before you get your situation evaluated by the dentist in 98101. The dentist, a certified provider of Invisalign, is the sole judge besides an orthodontist to determine the complexity of the situation affecting you.
During your appointment with the dentist seeking Invisalign, the professional evaluates your teeth and mouth to determine whether you qualify for Invisalign treatment. You must understand that Invisalign treatment is not suitable for complicated conditions of underbites, overbites, crossbites, open bites, significant gaps between teeth, rotated teeth, and a misaligned jaw. In such cases, you benefit better by receiving treatment from an orthodontist providing traditional braces.
If you qualify for Invisalign near you, the dentist captures 3D images of your teeth and mouth and helps you visualize your smile right there in the dentist’s office after your treatment. The photos are forwarded to Align Technologies, the manufacturers of Invisalign clear aligners, to custom-create your unique braces.
After about two weeks, you receive your first set of aligners from the dentist that you start wearing over your teeth immediately. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible and remain invisible to everyone around you, even if you are socializing or moving around in public. The clear aligners must stay on your teeth for 20 to 22 hours every day. Thankfully they are removable whenever you eat or drink anything but water and maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing.
You seek Invisalign treatment to gain freedom from the dental problems affecting you because of your crooked or misaligned teeth. Invisalign stipulates a set of rules you must follow after the dentist creates your personalized treatment plan to straighten your teeth. Each set of aligners you receive is designed for two to three weeks, after which you receive a fresh patch of aligners to replace the existing set. You must visit the dentist once every six to eight weeks to assess your gain and resume treatment.
Invisalign treatment delivers results in 12 to 18 months than the three years required by traditional braces. However, the results depend on your compliance with the stipulations from Invisalign. The removable feature of Invisalign braces shouldn’t encourage you to remove the aligners from over your teeth for over two hours because it can compromise the overall results resulting in more aligners being needed and extending the treatment time. Therefore if you intend to have straighter teeth without dental infections discreetly and you qualify for Invisalign treatment, consider yourself fortunate because you don’t have to endure metal brackets and wires in your mouth.
Before and After Care Invisalign Treatment
Before getting Invisalign treatment, it helps if you visit your regular dental office near you for dental cleanings to ensure they remove all plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth. Even after receiving the aligners, you are not saddled with any eating restrictions because the braces are not stuck to your teeth and are merely placed on them to apply subtle pressure and move them to their desired positions.
After completing Invisalign treatment, do not think you don’t need any after-care because your teeth are stubborn and will make every effort to move back into their original positions. However, the dentist in Seattle, WA treating you recommends you wear Invisalign retainers to prevent the movement of your teeth to create a bad bite again. You must follow your dentist’s instructions if you wish to retain the results you achieved from Invisalign treatment allowing you to display a beautiful smile.
Do you think you need to evaluate your teeth to determine whether you qualify for Invisalign treatment? If so, why not schedule an appointment with Seattle Sound Dental and Invisalign provider in your locality?
