Thoughts on Denna (from the Kingkiller Chronicles)?

Denna? My fucking girl? My fucking homeslice? My absolute favorite interrogation of the meaning of power and powerlessness?

I LOVE Denna. She and Kvothe are perfect for each other in a "don't inflict yourselves on anyone else" kind of way, but also, to reiterate a post I've made before, because they're both consummate actors. There is no real face behind the mask. The mask is their face. They both know this about each other, and everything falls apart when they try to show each other their "true selves" because neither of them have any idea what their own true self is.

I would say it's frustrating that she's only defined in relation to Kvothe, but I feel Rothfuss plays with that well enough to excuse. The way her actions and words sometimes lead the reader to a different conclusion than Kvothe is a fun and good execution on that.

Her self-effacing breakdown when she gives Kvothe the lute case is making me cry just REMEMBERING it. Her inability to handle her own imperfection that completely mirrors Kvothe's is such a wonderful way to bolster the depth of both characters.

The fact that she's almost objectively a social manipulation genius is the gorgeous icing on the cake. She's a savant at a skill that fucking sucks to make a living on, but she does her best to just grit her teeth and keep making that living.

I've dog-eared my copies of Kingkiller to hell and back, so I have a pen mark on the page in Wise Man's Fear for The Line. Y'know, the "all these men trying to sweep me off my feet" line. That shit kills me painfully every time I read it.

She's one of my top 10 characters of all time. I think she might be tied for first with Kvothe.
