Auburn Avenue from the streetcar window, February 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The view from a trip on the Atlanta Streetcar this week, on Auburn Avenue, looking out of the north-facing window.
Honest question: was the streetcar built to serve this street, or to allow tourists to bypass it? ----
There are absolutely some great small businesses on Auburn Avenue worth visiting and I believe more are on the way. But when you look out the window of the streetcar, you see way too many empty spaces and parking lots and blighted buildings.
By which I mean: the overall environment is neither as inviting as it should be for a traveller to randomly explore it, by getting off at one of these streetcar stops, nor is it as supportive of success for these small businesses as it should be.
I can't tell you exactly what the city should have done to correct this issue, and I realize there are a LOT of complicated issues here in terms of who owns the parcels and who should benefit from outcomes.
But at the same time, we've seen Atlanta leaders accomplish big things for major sports events and corporate relocations -- can they not accomplish the same with the basic increments of urbanism, even amid the specific challenges here?
It's been 14 years since the federal government awarded us the $47mil grant for the streetcar, and planning began years before that. We've had a lot of time. How much more do we need?
It took less time than this for the construction of the Downtown Connector and its related interstate highways (mid 1950s-60s) to result in the demolition of part of Auburn Avenue and to screw up its walkability. Why is it taking longer to make this a great urban space and cultural center?

F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point
Tumblr media
While the huge explosion at the Origin Facility destroyed the Auburn district and devastated the city, the helicopter evacuating the survivors of the first F.E.A.R. team crashed in the middle of the chaos.
Point Man meets up again with SFOD-D Douglas Holiday and F.E.A.R. doctor Jin Sun-Kwon. They mention that they can't contact F.E.A.R. command or Delta Force, however, an SFOD-D extraction point has been set up on the roof of Auburn Hospital, informing Point Man that he should head there too. Moving on, Point Man meets Paxton Fettel, the game's antagonist and Point Man's younger brother, in a nearby church. Fettel notes that the circumstances don't make sense, since Point Man killed him a few hours ago. He reactivates the Replica soldiers, who had been dormant since his death, and sends them after Point Man. Meanwhile, Jin is captured by Fettel's replicas, but later manages to escape while being transported by subway; from there, she goes alone to Auburn Hospital. Point Man and Douglas Holiday end up meeting and navigating a warehouse, but the ghostly Alma Wade, through her apparitions, kills Holiday.
Point Man is forced to proceed alone through the subway, which leads directly to Auburn Hospital. During Point Man's journey through the winding tunnels, Alma, in her younger form, opens the way for him several times, killing Replica soldiers standing in his way. The replicas eventually become desperate and place demolition charges in the subway tunnels in the hope that the resulting explosions will kill Point Man. Although initially unsuccessful, Point Man ends up being caught in one of these demolition explosions and is ejected from the tunnels into a nearby parking structure. From there, Point Man makes his way to the hospital, which is next to the parking structure. Jin is on a desperate run, seeking refuge in Memorial Hospital. The Delta Force agents are dead, and Point Man is on his way. Tension mounts as Jin worries that Point Man is not following her. She fears dying alone with "them".
As Point Man approaches the hospital, he is confronted by disturbing visions. Spencer Jankowski and the young Alma Wade appear, begging him to hurry. The environment turns into a maze of hallucinatory corridors. Jin runs ahead, pursued by Nightmares, while one of them turns on Point Man. But then something extraordinary happens. When Point Man catches up with Jin, he grabs his arm. Their eyes meet, and in an intense moment, he hugs her tightly, puts his forehead to hers and kisses her. At that moment, a flood of memories overwhelms Jin. She can now hear Point Man's voice telepathically, and he reassures her. Alma won't be able to hurt her, and the two of them must escape together.
And then, in the blink of an eye, the world returns to normal. The bond between Jin and Point Man has strengthened, and they will face the unknown side by side. 🌟 Point Man and Jin head for the service elevator. Suddenly, the power goes out and he has to find a way to restore it. As he walks through the dark basement, he is separated from Jin and Point Man witnesses several hallucinations, which include a series of prison cells containing the dead Armacham Technology Corporation victims of Alma Wade's F.E.A.R. murders. Jin is taken by Alma to witness images of her past and the origin project. jin hears Alma's voice saying why did he choose you suddenly jin feels her memories invaded the first time she met Point Man the intimate relationship between the two and the pact to keep the relationship secret. at that moment Alma accesses a memory of jin that moves her a scene of jin in labor saving a woman in traffic and puts the baby in the arms of the mother Jin says it is a healthy boy. Jin hears Alma's voice saying now I understand he chose you. The hallucination disappears and Jin returns to the hospital and rushes to the roof for extraction. After the hallucination, Point Man returns to Auburn Hospital and is contacted by Rodney Betters, telling him to get to the roof for extraction. The elevator is then reactivated and Point Man finally reaches the roof of the hospital. Paxton Fettel unleashes a squad of Replica Elites on Point Man. When Point Man has finished dispatching the squadron, a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter moves in to evacuate them. However, as it approaches, Fettel, through unknown methods, destroys the Blackhawk, with the resulting explosion throwing Point Man backwards into a wall and knocking him unconscious. Jin wakes him up, and carries him to the roof railing, to witness the whole city in flames. the Story ends with Paxton Fettel saying. "A war is coming, I saw it in my dreams. Fires sweeping the land, bodies in the streets, cities turned to dust. Retaliation…"

Federal funding could help Auburn Ave heal wounds from freeway damage
Tumblr media
This is a 1950s image of demolition for the Downtown Connector interstate, with Auburn Avenue's Big Bethel highlighted. The connector formed a barrier between the central business district and the African American community to the east. Atlanta's north-south freeway severed many neighborhoods and streets, including Auburn Avenue, which was then known as one of the most important places for Black commerce in the city. It also displaced over 7,000 African American residents. According to a post at Axios Atlanta, it's possible for a new federal funding package to help right some of the wrongs created by the interstate on Auburn Avenue, such as: "Managing the flood of cars roaring off the interstate, improving public spaces, and reducing heightened temperatures and increased pollution caused by the interstate." Read about it here: https://www.axios.com/local/atlanta/2022/01/05/atlanta-neighborhood-torn-apart-highway

SAVED!! Georgia State University is planning a $30 million renovation of the Bell buildings on Auburn Avenue in Downtown Atlanta, which were slated for demolition a few years ago. They would have been replaced with a parking lot. Thanks to all who helped with this effort! I was happy to have a reason to update the Save the Bell website today. Plans call for the buildings to be significantly renovated for adaptive reuse.
The buildings at 25-27 Auburn Avenue were built as a telephone exchange by the Southern Bell company in two stages, in 1907 and 1922.  The 1907 portion of the building was engineered to support up to 4 additional stories as needed.
The 1922 portion (left side) was designed by famed Atlanta architect P. Thornton Marye (Terminal Station) and brought revolutionary “machine-switching” technology to Atlanta for the first time, introducing locals to the now-ubiquitous dial tone. The interiors have large, open, high-bay spaces that were designed to house switching equipment and operators.
The most recent use of the properties was El Azteca, a restaurant on the first floor of 25 Auburn that operated from the early 1980s to the late 1990s.The Georgia State University Foundation acquired the buildings in 2006, and they have remained mostly vacant since that time.

@redeeming-sun ❤︎’d for a starter
Grey eyes regarded the ugly, rotting scar that cut through Eversong with a cold mask of indifference.
From atop the wall-walk, Sylvanas gazed down at the blighted swath of land contemplatively. She’d been informed there was no known way of curing the lands in a timely manner. It vexed her that Quel’Thalas would remained scarred, perhaps indefinitely.
Silvermoon was still in the grips of its recovery, entire sections of the capital were cordoned off due to construction, the undead, or disease (and at times, all three). Her people floundered for another source of magic to stave off bitter withdrawal now plaguing them.
Mages of all ranking demanded elixirs, and potions of essence (mana) to sate their screaming veins. It was not just the battlemages, enchanters, or magisters that were helping their troops fend off the Scourge, but others as well. Magic-users who were arguably not as important. Those who had no talent for combat, scholars, and philosophers who wished to preserve their ludicrous lifestylesover the lives of less-fortunate Quel’dorei citizens (and refugees from Lordaeron).
They could not fathom why not all people wished to cram themselves into Silvermoon, forced to live in glorified squalor as shanty-towns grew. They ignorantly shouted that as mages, could do in weeks what the few farmers Quel’Thalas stilled possessed would take months to accomplish.
Sylvanas knew they could, but permitting every arrogant mage to use their spells flagrantly would not only draw the Scourge back to Quel’Thalas. It would also burn through their limited reserves of mana.
There would be no aid from Lordaeron, the kingdom was the first to fall and paid the greatest price. Dalaran was still recovering, and there’d been no word from Gilneas. Sylvanas worked under the impression it too had been decimated by the Scourge (though she hoped in secret the small kingdom still stood).
Anestarian had burnt every bridge with Stormwind, so if there was aid coming from the High King, it would be delayed.
The dwarves of Khaz Modan offered some support, though their efforts were split. All the war-torn lands were pleading for aid.
Quel’Thalas was to receive crews to aid in demolition and reconstruction, but nothing in regards to magic.
Which meant, the elixirs were reserved for those who would do battle with the undead and Amani who now pushed into elven lands in hopes of expanding their territory.
Precious farmland must be protected, the borders had to be reinforced. She needed to ensure that her people possessed the room to grow – to get at least half of the populace crammed into Silvermoon out.
“Regent-Lord,” the title came from a young voice. Sylvanas turned, half-curious as to who now stood by her. He bowed his auburn head, pressing a fist to his chest.
A young man, scarcely old enough to enlist. He was a runner, arguably one of the most perilous positions. But she knew Lor’themar. The New Ranger-General would never dare put someone so less in years in mortal danger. This messenger was bound to the interior of Silvermoon, and only the safest routes.
        “Your nephew has arrived.”
Though relief washed over her, none of it showed. She nodded to the messenger.
        “Have him join me.”
There was a second salute before he disappeared. Sylvanas returned her distant stare to the Scar.
Perhaps she’d have the useless spellchuckers research the blight.
If they wished to complain, she’d be kind enough to give them a reason.
The sound of boots ascending the battlement stairs drew her thoughts away from the complaints of mages. She turned, worries forgotten as she laid eyes on her nephew.
Arator had grown since she laid eyes on him last, with sun-gold hair bound in a loose tail draped over one shoulder. Eyes were a radiant blue despite the absence of the Sunwell. He stood taller than Sylvanas by a few inches. He was broader then many elven men, a trait from his human father.
His armour looked to weigh a proper ton, accentuating just how imposing the young man appeared to be. The hilt of his broadsword peeked over his shoulder, pommel shining in the grey light of the overcast day.
A subtle smirk played onto her lips.
“You’ve grown,” her remark was cool, but she betrayed herself as she moved forward and pulled him into an embrace.
She’d sent him away, as far as she could before the Scourge marched on Silvermoon. Her one true abuse of power, she’d sent Arator to Dalaran, to be with mages whose powers were not intimately tied to the Sunwell. Arthas’ overconfidence had given her a single victory when he came to Quel’Thalas.
He’d told Sylvanas his desire, and so she was able to keep her nephew safe.
Or she’d believed so, until word came that Dalaran fell into ruin. She’d been beset with worry for weeks until word arrived that Arator survived.
Her selfish desire nearly cost the young man his life -- she’d never be able to forgive herself.
“How was your journey?” She stepped back from him, unable to mask the joy in her voice.
No portals were functioning in the Eastern Kingdoms; travellers were forced to go by foot or boat (if there were any ships to spare). She’d secretly dreaded the notion of Arator travelling from Dalaran to Quel’Thalas without an escort, but there was precious little she’d been able to do about it.
Not that it mattered now, he’d made it. She knew it shouldn’t surprise her, but she’d never have forgiven herself had something befallen him.

2019 Top Games of the Week: Week 1
Tumblr media
College football properly kicks off this weekend. Week 1 is a five day running party from Thursday to Monday featuring some pretty cool games and a bunch of terrible mismatches. There seem to be fewer high profile matchups this year, which is a bit disappointing, but the rest of the month makes up for it.
The Top Ten Games of the Week
10. #19 Wisconsin at South Florida (Friday 8/30/19)
Yeah, it isn’t the best week after the few high profile games. Wisconsin is looking to reestablish themselves as the top dogs in the Big Ten West. To build up some good press they’re gonna travel to South Florida and try to wreak havoc on a Bulls team that limped into the end of 2017.
9. Virginia Tech at Boston College (Saturday 8/31/19)
As a celebration of the new ACC Network kicking off, we’re going to see one of the league’s “premier” rivalry games early on. Personally I think this is a pretty cool game to showcase, if for nothing else than both teams really could use the win. Virginia Tech could definitely be a contender in the Coastal division, but the Hokies just can’t seem to get all their ducks in a row since Justin Fuente’s first season. It’s starting to feel like the partnership might not work. Speaking of, Boston College is desperate to win more than 7 games a year and are having a tough time raising the ceiling in the ACC Atlantic. This could be a good year to take that next step, but the Eagles might not have the personnel to do it.
8. Virginia at Pittsburgh (Saturday 8/31/19)
Believe it or not, but Virginia was picked by the ACC media to win the Coastal division. I’d love for this to happen, I’m just going to remain skeptical until I see the Cavaliers demonstrate they can win something like 9 games this year. UVA will get off to the right start with a win over Pittsburgh, the defending division champs.
7. Fresno State at USC (Saturday 8/31/19)
This is the schadenfreude game of the week. If this game had been played last year, Fresno State would have bowled over USC. But in 2019 the Bulldogs have lost some of their key players, and the Trojans can’t be THAT bad two years in a row. Right?
6. Ole Miss at Memphis (Saturday 8/31/19)
As far as I’m concerned Ole Miss is the underdog, SEC be damned. Memphis is poised to have a big season and the Rebels are dysfunctional enough not to have the benefit of the doubt.
5. Northwestern at #25 Stanford (Saturday 8/31/19)
The defending Big Ten West champion is taking on one of the PAC-12′s most consistent winners. Pretty good for Week 1 tbh. This is also a big revenge game for Stanford. Northwestern inexplicably beat the Cardinal in 2015, spoiling a Playoff bid for their last truly great team.
4. Houston at #4 Oklahoma (Sunday 9/1/19)
I probably have this one listed too high. But what if?!?! Dana Holgorsen left the Big 12 but the Big 12 can’t leave Dana Holgorsen behind. Houston is turning a new page and Oklahoma is breaking in a new (but very proven) quarterback. But hey, everybody suffers some growing pains.
3. Boise State vs Florida State in Jacksonville, FL (Saturday 8/31/19)
This one has disaster written all over it. Florida State should be better than last year, it’s hard to imagine the Seminoles any worse, but playing Boise in Week 1 has proven to be a very dangerous prospect for many a Power 5 squad. If the Broncos win this one their path for a NY6 bowl will be wide open.
2. #14 Utah at BYU (Thursday 8/29/19)
The Holy War is never not interesting. These teams just hate each other and always play tense, exciting games. Utah has higher expectations than usual and BYU should be improving. Plus it’s college football on a Thursday night, it’s been a while since you’ve seen that.
1. #16 Auburn vs #11 Oregon in Arlington, TX (Saturday 8/31/19)
Both teams have a lot riding on this game. Oregon is getting national attention as a favorite to win the PAC-12 for the first time since the Ducks collapsed in 2016. Meanwhile, Auburn is probably one more 8-4 season away from firing Gus Malzahn, so this is an absolute must-win for the Tigers. Oh yeah, and it’s the replaying of that oh-so-controversial 2011 BCS National Championship Game that saw the Oregon robbed in favor of Cam Newton’s team of destiny.
-
5 G5 Games of the Week
5. Toledo at Kentucky (Saturday 8/31/19)
Kentucky was the darling of 2018, but the Wildcats lost a lot of their best players. Toledo is used to upsetting P5 opponents. Let’s see what happens.
4. Georgia Southern at #6 LSU (Saturday 8/31/19)
50% chance that LSU wins easily. 40% chance Georgia Southern gets under LSU’s programming but the Tigers outmuscle the Eagles for the win. 10% we get the upset of the season.
3. Purdue at Nevada (Friday 8/30/19)
Purdue has been a good story but hasn’t actually been that good outside of the Boilermakers’ demolition of Ohio State last year. Nevada is slowly morphing back into a competent G5 team.
2. Utah State at Wake Forest (Friday 8/30/19)
Utah State lost Matt Wells but regained Gary Andersen, so the Aggies could pick right back up where they left off last season and menace P5 opponents. Wake Forest is another sad sack made good story, so I have mixed feelings about this one.
1. UCLA at Cincinnati (Thursday 8/29/19)
I think everybody’s picking Cincinnati here. The Bearcats are declaring their intentions to show up at the Cotton Bowl here.
-
FCS Games of the Week
This is the week that a ton of the FCS plays against the FBS, so there are heaps of upset opportunities here which I’ll cover briefly.
14. Delaware State at #22 Delaware (Thursday 8/29/19)
Of course, there’s the in-state rivalry that should be considered as well.
...
13. #21 Elon at #20 North Carolina A&T (Saturday 8/31/19)
The only ranked vs ranked matchup in the FCS in Week 1. It’s a cool regional game between respectable teams.
...
12. #23 Sam Houston State at New Mexico (Saturday 8/31/19)
11. #16 Indiana State at Kansas (Saturday 8/31/19)
10. #15 Illinois State at Northern Illinois (Saturday 8/31/19)
9. #14 Montana State at Texas Tech (Saturday 8/31/19)
8. #13 Colgate at Air Force (Saturday 8/31/19)
7. #12 Nicholls State at Kansas State (Saturday 8/31/19)
I mean, at least one of these teams have to win this one. Godspeed, Kansas.
...
6. #8 Weber State at San Diego State (Saturday 8/31/19)
5. #5 UC Davis at California (Saturday 8/31/19)
4. #3 South Dakota State at Minnesota (Thursday 8/29/19)
3. #2 James Madison at West Virginia (Saturday 8/31/19)
This is where it starts to get real scary. I bet each one of these FBS AD’s is really nervous about their game. They learned not to schedule North Dakota State anymore, but really, how much easier is JMU or South Dakota State?
2. #18 Northern Iowa at #21 Iowa State (Saturday 8/31/19)
#4 Eastern Washington at #13 Washington (Saturday 8/31/19)
Oh yeah, here’s where we get a real threat. We’ve got ranked FCS vs ranked FBS with in-state angles. Delicious. The FCS could actually effect the FBS Playoff race here, especially the EWU-UW game.

I, II, III, IV, V, VI
Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Darkness is on the rise. Darth Assem the Wise has begun gradually over taking the galaxy with his Neibolt Regime. As his power grows, so does the power of his apprentice, the fearsome Darth Fide. With the demolition of the Jedi, the public is quickly losing hope.
Meanwhile, General Marsh and the Rebel Alliance struggle to keep the Regime on a short leash. With the rumor of a hidden Neibolt base on the abandoned Sith planet Korriban, they have made quick plans to follow up on the intel.
All they can do now is hope the force is with them...
VII.
Ben was beyond ecstatic to be back on home turf. He really was. He nearly burst into tears when he saw Bev standing there in the loading bay, waiting for him. She was one of the few things that kept him holding out hope during his days on Korriban, and there she was.
He noticed later that she obviously hadn’t been sleeping, and that worried him more than anything. Was she staying up, riddled with concern for her captured friends? Was she facing repercussions for conducting a failed mission?
He wondered all this as he snuck down to Beverly’s room that same night, keeping a wary eye out for any stragglers in the halls. He knocked gently, a simple tapping against the cold metal of the door.
Bev’s face was a total mess of unregistered emotion when she answered, her auburn hair tangled and matted around her face.
“What do you want Ben?” She didn’t say it with any annoyance, just extreme exhaustion.
“I’m pretty sure we both thought I was going to be dead, so I thought I’d come see you,” then, a little quieter, “I missed you a lot.”
She bit her lip, weighing her options. She finally just sighed and pulled Ben inside by his arm. Her bed was pristinely made, and it looked as though it had been undisturbed for several days. Several holographic monitors were mounted on the walls and placed on the small desk. Clothes were flung across the floor haphazardly. Beverly pinked, trying to secretly shift them from view with her foot.
“Beverly, have you been sleeping? Like at all?” Ben asked, taking in the sight before him.
“Honestly… no, I haven’t. But I needed to find a way to get you guys out. Truthfully, a lot of the higher ups weren’t very happy with the idea of us sending any more people to the base, but they didn’t have to know. Anyway, it didn’t really work out the way I planned-”
She stopped abruptly as Ben stepped forward to grip her in a tight embrace. She quickly sunk into it, wrapping her arms around Ben’s middle.
“We’re here now, Bev. I know that you were worried, but please sleep, okay?” She nodded, allowing Ben to place his chin on her head.
“I want to hear about you first. We only got to hear the technical version of what happened. How are you?”
“I’ve been better. I got my gut busted open during an interrogation session, but it's not too bad. You saw it in the med bay. I was pretty terrified, though.”
Beverly nodded, moving away from Ben to sit on the bed. He followed shortly behind, sitting on the edge.
“I kinda thought that we were going to die there. I’m really glad that Mike came along, otherwise we might have. And then our cruiser was shot down. I dunno, we were on the brink nearly every day.” Ben cleared his throat, hoping his next statement wouldn’t be out of line. “Honestly, the thought of getting back to you is what kept me going.”
“You don’t mean that,” Bev said, but her grin and slight blush gave her away. Ben grinned, ruffling her hair a little.
“Every word. And hey, we got two new crew members, so it’s not all bad.”
Bev sort of nods, moving over to lay a head on Ben’s shoulder. He nestles his nose in her hair, bringing a hand up to curl a stray strand around his finger.
“I’m really glad that you made it out alive. I’m glad that you’re all back and safe. We’ve all been worried sick.”
Ben let her words sink in, trying to wring any hidden meaning out of her words. He’d known her since they were children, but as they got older, she got better at hiding her real feelings. Ben liked to think he was an expert at whittling away her facades, but sometimes he wasn’t so sure.
Sometimes he had to take a risk, shredding his fingers prying her blockades open.
“You know I love you, right?”
Beverly’s shoulders tensed just a little.
“I know.”
It was a quick, cold statement. Detached. Ben’s heart clenched painfully. He gently placed a hand to her face, stroking at a cheekbone with the pad of his thumb. She leaned into the touch just a little, green eyes filled with a peculiar type of fear.
“You don’t have to say it back, Bev. I’m stating a fact, not pushing you into a feeling. Okay?”
“I know.”
But this time, she smiled just a little, seeming at least a little more at ease.
Ben returned her grin, moving his head a little closer. Close enough to feel her warm breath against his cheek, far enough for her to move away.
But Beverly never did. She closed the gap between them, softly bringing their lips together. It was unrushed, unheated. Just a chance to feel close and comforted with each other, knowing that the other was really there and safe.
Kisses like this were not something that happened often between the two these days, and Ben filed away as much as he could in his mind. It was times like that that he really wished the war was a thing of the past, and that Bev’s father hadn’t put so much pressure on his daughter by use of his horrid reputation. He hadn’t treated Beverly or his crew right, and now she was forced to pay the price for it.
But that’s exactly what Ben loved about Beverly; she was a resilient being, born of light and held together by a refusal to do what others expected. She remained disciplined in the face of adversity, yet kind and soft when the dust settled. She took care of those who did not have the ability to do so themselves. Ben had always felt himself turning toward her, basking like a plant to a sun. When he said he loved her, it was the least he could have said.
Ben pulled away from the kiss as slowly as humanly possible, rubbing a gentle thumb across Beverly’s jaw as he did. Her green eyes betrayed her attempt at strength, giving way to a mixture of worry, relief, and something he couldn’t quite place. Regret? Fear? Disbelief? It was possibly a combination of the three.
“Hey, it’s alright. We’ll be alright. We’re home now, we have the intel, we can make our next move. But for now, please get some rest Bev.” She placed her hand on the one Ben still held to her face, lacing her fingers through it.
“Okay, I will.” Beverly ran her thumb gently over the back of Ben’s hand, the small circles leaving warmth in their wake. “Thank you, for coming to see me. It’s good to have you back.”
“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” he said, barely above a whisper. “I should probably get back to my room, though. We both need our rest.”
Beverly nodded, and Ben thought he’d seen a glimmer of disappointment flash across her face. It might have just been wishful thinking on his part.
He slowly untangled himself from Beverly, quietly padding over to the door. But just as he was about to pass through it, he heard a soft voice.
“Hey Ben?”
He turned his head back.
“Yes Bev?”
“I love you, too. I thought you should know.”
Ben smiled a little.
“I know.”

Friendship Really Is Forever
Synopsis: Immortal besties Bryn and Audie get together to catch up on each other's lives and some good old gossip.
.
However the world may change, one thing was certain: they'd meet the day after the full moon.
It hadn't always been an easy promise to keep, but they did it. Even when it required extensive planning, lots of messages back and forth, and was only really doable once every few years.
Now with Audie and Bryn living in the same country, even a five-hour drive felt like a piece of cake. Besides, what could be lovelier than meeting a dear old friend for a cup of tea?
"Oh, look at you!" Audie stood up and hugged her friend.
"You don't think it's too much?" Bryn touched her auburn hair self-consciously.
"It makes your eyes pop."
"You look great with short hair." Bryn told her as they sat down by their table in the farthest corner of the caf, by the window.
"I don't know what it is about the twenties that make me want to chop it all off." Audie flagged down a waiter and they quickly placed their orders "How are you? What have you been up to?" she turned back to Bryn.
"I'm sort of a goldsmith now. I'm mostly restoring vintage pieces."
"You're doing fine and delicate work?" Audie's brows were half-way to her hairline "You're a one-woman demolition crew."
"In all fairness, I never actually worked with demolition." Bryn pointed out.
"Give it time." Audie waved a hand dismissively.
Their tea and scones arrived and were set between them.
"You won't believe who Instagram recommended as someone I might know." Audie nibbled on her scone.
"Gwen."
Audie nodded, "Freaking Gwenllian, of course!"
"All the languages the woman speaks, and she still can't grasp the concept of 'lay low'." Bryn shook her head and sipped her tea.
"She was going on about her passing resemblance to Catherine Zeta Jones." Audie rolled her eyes.
"How much of it really is there after six generations?"
"I, too, resemble my descendants, but you don't see me bragging about it."
"That's because Robert looks like a toad." Bryn sipped her tea.
Audie's jaw dropped, "Brynhildr!" she hissed.
"Well, he does." Bryn shrugged apologetically "He takes after his father. Stanley is a good man, but you have to admit he'd only be considered a looker if he were sitting between a couple of Habsburgs."
"Well, still..." Audie shifted on her seat.
"Elise looks a bit like you and she's lovely." Bryn added for good measure "She has your eyes."
"I think I'd look like her if I ever got to the eighties."
"Audie, please, you don't even know your actual age."
"They've changed the calendar so many times I kinda lost track." Audie defended herself "Do you know how old you are?" she challenged.
"I'm not sure how long I spent sailing around." Bryn admitted behind her tea.
Audie scoffed. Sailing around, yeah right.
"Anyway, you won't believe who wrote me." Bryn went on "Bertie asked if I still had the locket he gave me as a wedding gift."
"I can't believe the cheek." Audie shook her head "What does he want with it now, and why does he think you'd still have it?" she nibbled on her scone, her round eyes the only visible part of her face behind the pastry.
"No idea. You'd think after you slash a guy across the chest, he'd take a hint."
"I don't usually condone violence, but he deserved that." Audie admitted.
"Right? I mean, he didn't want to be married to me anymore, all he had to do was say it. He didn't have to fake his own death."
"To be fair, he didn't think he'd meet you four hundred years later."
"I don't care. Bertie left me with five children. Do you remember how hard it was to feed anyone back in the 1200s?"
Audie's instinctive reaction was a shudder and to pocket one of the packets of jam that came with the scones, "Anyway, what did you tell him?" she straightened herself up.
"Nothing. I mean... I don't owe him anything. Besides, I traded it for a ship in 1603, so what's there to say really?" Bryn shrugged and sipped her tea.
Audie nodded.
"I should've listened to you; you told me not to marry him." Bryn sighed.
"Because I thought a brewer might live long enough to realize he was aging and you weren't, not because I thought he'd be around after 817 years."
Bryn arched her eyebrows in agreement, "But enough about him. What have you been up to?"
"Well..."
