We have arrived!

1,5 weeks ago we arrived on this beautiful island of Sri Lanka. It’s still a little hard to grasp that this is where I’ll be spending the next 7 weeks. I’m doing my internship here with Nora at an Ayurveda Retreat called the Plantation Villa (link for those interested). It’s located 60km south of the capital, Colombo at a place called Nehinna in the district of Kalutara. A beautiful place in an incredible lush and tropical scenery with fruit trees all around, vegetables growing in the garden, monkeys, birds and squirrels everywhere. The nature sounds here are so loud, its amazing. This is where I will be learning about the things that got me to apply for the GNH education in the first place. Incredibly excited and thankful for the opportunity.

I have for a few years already been very interested in alternative and holistic approaches to health and wellbeing, and especially Ayurveda as it is one of the oldest holistic medicine systems in the world. As it’s not yet very popular in the West (although starting to gain recognition), I’ll try to briefly explain what it is. It’s quite complex and I’m sure it will take me the full 8 weeks, reading several books and talking with the doctors here to get an adequate understanding of it. The word Ayurveda is Sanskrit and means “science of life” (Ayur = “life” or “daily living”, Veda = “knowledge”). It originated in India more than 5,000 years ago, but is still widely practiced as in the original scripts today. It is holistic in the way that it is based on the belief that health depends on the balance between the body, mind and spirit as well as the interconnectedness with the universe. (I’ll explain this more in depth later). If one is out of balance, disease is prone to happen. Ayurveda teaches about how one can bring the body and mind back into balance so it can heal itself and maintain optimal well-being.

The Plantation Villa was created 4 years ago to serve as a healing retreat. People come for all different types of reasons, some for just relaxation, others for weight loss or disease treatments. The duration also varies, some are staying for only a rejuvenating weekend, others for a full month of Ayurvedic detox. There are 3 types of packages guests can choose from: 1) Yoga and Meditation package, which is the basic, including accommodation, meals and drinks, classes, workshops and lectures; 2) Detox package, which includes the basic as well as Ayurvedic Doctor consultation and daily therapies; 3) Full Ayurvedic package, which is a deeper detox (Panchakarma) including also herbal medicine and oils and requires a minimum stay of 21 nights. There are currently 15 staying here, mostly from Europe and Australia. They have a max capacity for 30 people with 7 standard rooms (no A/C), 6 deluxe and 2 suits. There’s a pool, a huge garden (and forest all around), a Sala, consultation and treatment rooms, as well as main entry, kitchen and dining area. It’s super nice. 

Nora and I will be mostly involved in the kitchen and creating a recipe book for the guests, explaining how they use the Ayurvedic concepts in the cooking. More on what we are doing here in the blogs to follow. See ya!

Ella

We got it up for breakfast at 9 with some of guys staying in the room next to us. It was a proper Sri Lankan breakfast ( dhal, Noddles, hoppers and other things) but today it was just a bit to dry and heavy, could have just done with cornflakes. We settled or bill and couldn't praise our stay at nature lovers enough. Really cheap but amazing quality. Of the bus stop we went to catch our first bus to walawaya. We were met with tuk tuk drivers saying they would take us for 2000 each and a guy saying a mini bus for 1000 each. We declined knowing the bus wound be about 200 but this one guy was saying it's 1000 each on a bus which annoyed us enough to just say no go away. The bus was rammed! Like choka and there was about 8 backpackers with big bags to fit in! I lovley guy got up to let me sit down with my bag on my lap and he stood for like an hour. We got off at walawaya 2hours later(100rps) and straight onto the bus for Ella. This was a bit better but then all the school kids got on and it was rammed again. Funny thing is that if you have an empty lap then you get backpacks handed to you by the kids to hold! They are super friendly and just smile.at you the whole way. The climb to ella.was beautiful, green covered hills shrouded in rain clouds. Felt like we were in proper Sri Lanka now. So the coast was 32 degrees unbearable sun, hill country is 18 degrees rain! This is the first time I've put on my good old woolly hat in weeks :). Elle feels like a show town, Sri Lankan feel but tailored to tourist's. Don't get me.wrong it's still gorgeous but when you walk past big restaurants selling pizza and burgers you just feel like tourism has had a big impact. We were meant to be staying at a place that we found on booking.com for £29/2 nights. This was a deal and it was meant to be £58 but was half price. So when we turned up the guy said how much had we paid and when we told him he said "oh no that is to cheap, that is the price for one night, I have these two rooms I'll let you have for £13 a night instead". The room we had booked was delux, great view, big bed, tolieries etc. These rooms were in side, no view, crap beds, no towels. We weren't happy but said we would take it to drop our bags down and go find something eles. So after an angry email to booking.com with a complaint that the guy had obviously priced it to get people in and then tell them it was wrong but he had cheap rooms, we found this amazing place 1 minuet down the road called McQueen's. It was meant tobe £24 a night but we got it for £13. Big comfy bed, views and best of all hot showers! They guy looked annoyed when we said we were leaving but didn't try to stop us. We wondered into town and up to the train station to see about booking tickets to kandy because we had been told they sell out really quick. We managed to book 1st class for 1250rp as the observation cars were full. Had a bite to eat, dropped of some laundry and headed back to our room to get some sleep for a climb tomorrow up little Adams peak.
