Thoughts : Zootopia (2016)
Tumblr media
Even though the lion’s share (no pun intended) of cartoon films are based on previous intellectual property, sometimes the remakes are not point by point, which is always refreshing.  While I have no solid proof that Zootopia is a loose adaptation of the structure implemented by George Orwell’s classic book Animal Farm, I can say with confidence that the film is a wonderful expansion of those ideas, making it both instantly recognizable in the grand scheme of storytelling and wholly relevant to the times.
Zootopia is the story of a society filled with anthropomorphic animals assuming the roles associated with standard human life, and the prejudices that have formed within that society.  Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), a young bunny fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a police officer, is the protagonist, and we follow her as she overcomes the struggles beset on her as the first rabbit officer.  After being delegated to ticket duty on her first day, she is hustled by Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a sly fox with a personality as thick as armor.  Their chance encounter leads to opportunity when Hopps’ drive to make a difference leads her to uncovering a scandal that could rock the entire sociopolitical infrastructure withheld in the city of Zootopia.
The film wonderfully fits homage from a plethora of sources to weave the tapestry of its story together.  Hopps is extremely reminiscent of Clarice Starling, the iconic Jodi Foster character from Silence of the Lambs.  The way that the mystery unfolds deeper and deeper while going higher and higher up the status ladder mirrors Chinatown.  It is crystal clear that directors Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush not only understood that their vehicle could succeed where heavy-handed films like Crash could not, but it could also manage to throw in nods to the very system that made its release possible.
On top of all the homage, the animation itself is impressive.  The characters are not only well thought out in terms of their animal assignments, but each animal species manages to maintain individuality from character to character visually and in terms of personality.  The different areas that make up the city of Zootopia have design elements that range from subtle to outright anchoring depending on the particular animals that inhabit it.  There are even great moments that range from lighthearted and entertaining to dark and tense, mood that is all captured within the way that the world and the locations that the characters inhabit are ‘lit’ via animation.
Ginnifer Goodwin, known more for her television than film roles, stands up to the task of lead among a long list of industry regulars.  Jason Bateman plays a wonderful foil for her to gain confidence against.  Other standout characters with significant screen time are voiced by Idris Elba, Nate Torrence, J.K. Simmons and Jenny Slate (with a brilliant slow burn of a performance).  Special guest highlights include voice appearances by Tommy Chong, screenwriter Phil Johnston, Raymond S. Persi, Shakira and Tom ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr.
I’d always heard that this film was considered a must watch among modern day animated films, and I believe that I will be echoing that sentiment in the future.  Not only is the film quite enjoyable, but I would love the opportunity to share this with children I may have in the future.
